How to Get a Tourist Visa for Austria

Many of the millions of tourists that make their way to Austria each year, need a visa .

Inevitably, one frequently-asked question is how to get a tourist visa to visit Austria.

Although nationals of the Schengen area do not need one, visitors from many other countries might. In addition to that, starting in 2025, the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be implemented for these nationalities. The ETIAS visa waiver program will simplify the application process and get holders through border control faster while improving security for the Schengen Area.

Read on to discover how to obtain a tourist visa or visa waiver for Austria.

How Can I Get an ETIAS Visa Waiver for Austria?

It will be possible to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver for Austria online once it is launched. It will be the mandatory documentation for citizens of eligible countries visiting the Schengen Area (a group of European countries, including Austria, that have abolished border control between each other, allowing easier movement between these states).

Much like similar electronic travel authorizations (such as the Candian ETA or the American ESTA), the applicant must fill out a form online , providing their personal information and answering security questions. Required application details include:

  • Valid passport details, including the date of expiration
  • Email address
  • Personal details, including full name, date of birth, country of birth, etc.
  • Travel history
  • Any criminal record

Travelers visiting Austria with an ETIAS must have a passport that will be valid for at least 3 months after they plan to leave the country.

In order to apply for an ETIAS, you must be a national of one of the following countries:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • El Salvador
  • Marshall Islands
  • New Zealand
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Korea
  • Timor Leste
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • United States

British nationals who are not EU citizens (e.g. citizens of British Overseas Territories) will also have to apply for an ETIAS. When the United Kingdom leaves the EU, its citizens will no longer benefit from the free travel policy of the EU and it is likely that all British citizens will be required to apply for an ETIAS.

Visiting Other Schengen Countries with ETIAS

The ETIAS will also allow the holder to visit any of the other countries in the Schengen Area. If the applicant is planning to visit more than one Schengen country, they must state the first Schengen country they plan to arrive in when they fill in the form.

How Long Does it Take to Get an ETIAS?

The ETIAS online application for Austria is straightforward and quick to complete and submit. It is then processed quickly. It is expected that applicants will receive a response within 48 hours of submitting the online form.

How Can I Get a Tourist Visa for Austria?

Visitors who are not eligible for the ETIAS travel authorization and are not citizens of the EU or Schengen countries do require a tourist visa. These travelers must file for a Schengen Visa to enter Austria . This document allows access to all other countries in the Schengen zone as well.

To apply for a Schengen Visa, it is necessary to attend an interview at an Austrian embassy (or the embassy of another Schengen country) and provide the required documentation.

Required documentation to obtain a Schengen Visa

Required documents include:

  • The application form
  • The traveler’s passport
  • 2 copies of a recent photo (passport-sized)
  • Proof of marital status
  • Travel insurance
  • Hotel reservations
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the trip
  • Travel itinerary

Is it Easy to get Austria Tourist Visa?

is austria tourist visa easy to get

Sahana Kulur

With a dream of wandering in the Austrian hills to listen to the cowbells and eating buckets of cheese with wine, I applied for Austria Tourist Visa for my mom and me – The immense joy comes with excitement and a lot of confusion with a pinch of fear; because 2020 showed us that anything could change at any time. Thank god, the universe conspired it – Trust me, getting a Visa for an Indian passport isn’t a child’s play.

So this guide with all minute necessary details will help you get your Austria Tourist Visa and destress yourself in Austria’s free-spirited cities and quaint towns.

Is austria open for tourists.

At the end of High Alpine Road : That cheerful kid spoke of my state of mind when Austria opened for Tourists.

Yes! Austria was one of the first countries to let tourists in post-Covid. Check their  official website  for the latest update. I hope COVID is over and there are no more changes to the world.

How can I get a tourist visa for Austria?

Austria is one of the 26 Schengen countries in Central Europe. The  official Schengen website  says – “ Schengen Area signifies a zone where 26 European countries abolished their internal borders, for the unrestricted movement of people, in harmony with common rules for controlling external borders and fighting criminality by strengthening the common judicial system and police cooperation.”  I am not here to discuss their trade /foreign/political policies. But you must know certain things as a foreign tourist with a  weaker passport.

Which countries can I enter with my Schengen visa?

Aerial view of Hohenschwangau town, lake and castle surrounded by green mountains and fog

From Innsbruck, Austria, I went to Hohenschwangau Castle in Germany.

With a Visa from any 26 Schengen countries, you can travel to all the other 25 countries. For Example, with my Austria Visa, we travelled to  Germany.  But the Visa we obtained must be from that Schengen country where we first land. If you are entering Austria first and then heading to Germany , you must get Schengen Visa from Austrian Embassy.

What’s the validity of the Schengen Visa?

Classical architetcural style buildings of various colour, same hight and similar facade beautifully standing beside main road in Innsbruck

Previously Schengen visas were issued for 15/30/45/60/90 days, depending on your request and the documents submitted to prove the request. For Example – My previous Schengen tourist Visa (TYPE C) from Greece was valid for 45 days. It allowed me to stay for 30 days during that period though I submitted docs that proved my travelling in the Schengen area for 18 days.

But post-COVID, it looks like things have changed – I submitted documents for exact 20 days. I thought I would get a 30-day stay visa. But I received an exact 20 days validity for 35 days! I met a few Indian travellers in Vienna who faced a similar thing. So don’t expect 30 days permit after submitting 25 days request. Be careful while mentioning the number of days.

Is it easy to get an Austrian Tourist Visa?

is austria tourist visa easy to get

These fellas near Schafberg made stand-up paddle boarding look so easy – But getting a Schengen visa with an Indian Visa is quite the opposite.

Apart from Industries, agriculture and dairy, Austria’s economy depends on international tourism highly. So like everyone else in the world, Austria wanted its tourists back to boost its economy after 2020. When I sat in  VFS Global office  in Bangalore with mom, we observed that the highest applicants were from Germany, Netherlands, France and Switzerland. Only three applicants came to the Austrian counter in that 4 hours of waiting, including us. As many bloggers say, “The amazing landlocked country of Austria goes off the tourist radar by many.” Plus, countries like Germany and France receive a lot of business visa requests too.

So I am sure getting an Austrian tourist Visa is easier than at least in Germany, Netherlands and France. (My aunt had to wait for 45 days to get an appointment for her France Visa, and it would take 20 more days to process that) .

You must know that currently, Austria is going through shortage occupation, including at their embassies. So there may be a delay in your request processing – So be patient.

What is the shortage occupations in Austria?

Tourists walking in Salzburg old town street smiling and laughing

You rarely see these many people at once – If you see it, it is only in famous tourist places.

After spending 15 days across Austria, I realised that there is a scarcity of manpower! The cafes, hotels, and shops were full of customers, with two or three waiters working super hard, catering to all the rush and buzz. So a recent survey said that 90% of Austria Visa application gets approved because they need more people. But your documents must be 100% perfect and legit. I won’t say you get Austria’s work Visa easily. Suppose you can speak English and German with a decent education. In that case, you may have an opportunity to work in Austria!

How can I apply for Austria Tourist Visa without a travel agent in India?

Roman statue of two men fighting and one of them is screaming for help with arms stretched

This is how we feel while arranging and sorting out documents – It was almost 70 pages for each of us!

Applying for Schengen Visa by yourself is convenient if only your city has the visa issuance service company of the country you are visiting. For Example,  my city Bangalore has an Austria Visa application centre.   So submitting the documents after fixing an online appointment was easier.

Suppose your city doesn’t have a particular visa application centre, take the help of a travel agent. You must travel to another city to apply first, attend a personal interview later, and collect your approved/disapproved Visa with your passport. It is better to go through a reliable agent to avoid this hassle. But ensure you research from your end, and go through your documents though you depend on the agent.

What documents are required to get Austria tourist visa?

The  common checklist for all Schengen country visas is available online . But now, each Schengen country adds extra document requirements as COVID protocols. It is an unsaid rule to add certain proofs which aren’t there on their checklist.

I have listed below how to strengthen your docs and what extra you must add.

  • Visa Application Form   – After filling out everything, ensure you have filled confirmed  booking hotel address and phone number of your first stay fully . The embassies do call those accommodations sometimes to cross-verify your bookings.
  • Two recently taken photos as per  visa photo requirements.  Although Greece  and Austria are Schengen, their photo requirement is different. Check it on the respective visa service provider and get the photos in prior.
  • A valid Passport along with your old ones if you have any.  If you had gotten a Schengen visa before, it would make the process perhaps 10% easier. Ensure to get the coloured photocopy of your passport and your previous Schengen visa to submit..

Already tired of arranging docs? Hold on.

  • Round trip reservation or itinerary . – Book refundable flight tickets to be on the safer side.
  • Travel insurance policy . A document that proves you have travel health insurance for the whole Schengen territory, with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros in case of any medical emergency. We bought ICICI Lombard insurance valid for 28 days after arriving in a Schengen Area.
  • Proof of accommodation .  A document that shows where you will be accommodated on all the days. This can be hotel/hostel/BnB booking. But make sure all travellers’ names are fully mentioned in the reservation. You need not stick to these bookings later. So I always book “Pay Later at the property” or “Fully refundable” rooms and change later to what I prefer.

Create a Day-to-Day Travel Itinerary.

  • This sounds like an organised tour or a regime plan. But you must do it. I hardly follow that itinerary on my actual trip, but it is needed to get your Visa.  Avoid mentioning train or flight journeys between two cities.  If you mention, you must book a train/flight ticket to prove your itinerary. Mention the commute as Private cabs between places.
  • Proof of financial means . Evidence that you have enough money to support yourself financially throughout your stay in the Schengen

What financial documents do I need for visa?

  • The previous six months’ Bank statement with the branch manager’s signature on every page  though the document says, “It is digitally signed”.
  • The address on this document and your passport should be the same.
  • Ensure you have constant transactions in the account. Many Visa applications get rejected because the transaction would be almost nil throughout. But suddenly, there will be a huge amount, like 5 Lakh INR, in the account ten days before the Visa interview . These last-minute transactions in non-active accounts are a big No.
  • Proof of Employment -Schengen Visa paperwork is easier for those earning a regular monthly income . Because income tax returns, regular salary slips, and NOC from working places are easy to get.

Can I get a Schengen visa if I am unemployed?

See these pretty houses in Tirol:  Isn’t your struggle to arrange documents worth the effort to see this beauty?

Yes. You must show a sponsor. A sponsor cover letter with their previous six-month salary slip, ITR, his bank statements. Plus, a document to prove your relationship with the sponsor.

How much bank balance is required for Austria visa?

As mom and I travelled in the Schengen area for 20 days, we showed a balance of 5lakhs Rupees along with other documents. So it depends on how long your stay is in the Schengen area.

Can I travel to Austria if I’m vaccinated?

Yes ! Austria has lifted all COVID restriction rules. But check their website before booking tickets.

  • Vaccination proof – Update it with your passport number.
  • Declaration of entry and Transit  – This is related to your COVID vaccination and health status
  • Consent form  – You must sign it saying you know the embassy can take more than 15 days to process, and you won’t complain.
  • Visa Declaration form –  Stating it is your responsibility to be available whenever the embassy contacts you via email/phone or asks for a personal interview. And your visa will be rejected otherwise.
  • Guarantee letter by sponsor/invitee  – They are responsible for our return to India, as stated in the application form. This one is different from a sponsorship letter.

How much does an Austrian visa cost?

Collection of enamel earrings of various colours

The moment we paid Visa fees, we became sure that Austria isn’t going to be a budget trip.

Though the official website said 80Euro for adults, we had to pay around 135 euros (11000 INR)/per person. This includes visa fees, Vfs global service charges, and courier charges.

How long does it take to get a tourist Visa for Austria?

Post-Covid, most embassies and consulates are running short of employees. But  fortunately, I got my Austrian Tourist Visa within ten working days of applying.  There was that mad summer tourism rush for Europe. But as Austria falls off the tourist radar compared to France, Italy and Switzerland, I was lucky to get it that early.

Is it easy to clear the Immigration process at Vienna Airport?

Tourists and airhostesses wearing masks standing on escalator in Vienna

The Europe summer hype by fellow bloggers had prepared me for hours of waiting at Vienna airport to clear the immigration process. But we faced the opposite of it! Mom and I had the awful experience of getting a COVID test done that hurt our nose and throat, and they didn’t even ask us. Grrrrrrrr.

I am sure airport officers know what they are doing and whom they question. But I was flabbergasted by how the officer stamped our passports without even looking at our faces to verify the photo. There was not even one question: “why are you here? How long, show me your insurance? When will you go back etc. etc.” – This was the least questioned immigration process I ever went through.

I was informed that I must keep my vaccination certificate and COVID Negative test result handy at Dubai airport transit. Not even once did they ask me for it.

Does Vienna airport close overnight?

Austrian parliament building

Nope. It is 24hrs open airport. There are some basic things for overnight sleepers, along with luggage lockers.

How long does it take to get through Vienna airport?

The Vienna airport is not huge. I think there or 4 or 6 terminals. Maybe during skiing season, there will be a bit crowd. But when I went there in July 2022, I felt 45 minutes of layover to connect to your next flight should be fine.

Most Important note to Indians and foreigners entering India post-COVID-19.

Who needs to fill air suvidha form.

Updated on May 5th 2023

Air Suvidha form is a self declaration form that tourists and Indians arriving at India had to fill post covid-19. As of now, fortunately, Indian government eased the norms of all countries and hence you don’t have to fill air-suvidha! But keep an eye open – You can never trust what viruses can cause which pandemic that would turn the world upside down!

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Some terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – against soft targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Crime:  Austria has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe and violent crime is rare. Crimes of opportunity involving theft of personal property do occur. These crimes frequently occur in tourist areas, including the plaza around St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the nearby pedestrian shopping areas in Vienna’s First District.

  • Beware of  pickpockets  on public transportation and in bus or train stations. Trains between Vienna and Budapest, Prague, or Rome are high-risk.
  • Do not leave bags unattended.
  • Do not carry your passport when sightseeing within Vienna; lock it in your hotel safe or other secure area unless needed for travel. Instead, carry a photocopy of your passport at all times along with a second form of ID such as a U.S. driver’s license.

Demonstrations  are common. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Past demonstrations have turned violent.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Victims of Crime:  Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime. You can call the police at 133. U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance at+43-(0)1-313-390. Report crimes to the local police at  133  and contact the U.S. Embassy

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

We may be able to help victims of crime with the following:

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, imprisoned, or deported. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are  arrested or detained , ask police to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

  • You can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines   for possessing, using, or trafficking in  illegal drugs  in Austria. If you break Austrian laws,  your   U.S. passport won’t help you avoid arrest or prosecution .

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods:  Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection may confiscate the items or fine you, if you bring them back to the United States. See the  U.S. Department of Justice website  for more information.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Austria. The LGBTQI+ community is well-developed in larger cities, including Vienna, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg. LGBTQI+ organizations operate freely. While there is some societal prejudice against LGBTQI+ persons, Austria has become more liberal with laws and social opinion concerning sexual orientation and gender identity. Anti-discrimination laws also apply to LGBTQI+ persons. Same sex couples are permitted to marry or enter a legally recognized civil union.

See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  Laws in Austria prohibit discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental disabilities, and are enforced. Accessibility is limited in older buildings, including restaurants, cafes, hotels, castles, and other tourist attractions especially outside of major cities. Rentals, repair and replacement parts for wheelchairs, orthopedics, and other equipment are available in major cities. Medical facilities and staff are generally excellent and emergency services are available countrywide.

To call an ambulance, dial 144 .

Ambulance services are widely available.

Local hospitals will not settle accounts directly with American insurance companies.  You must pay the hospital’s bill and later claim reimbursement from the insurance carrier in the United States.  The Austrian Medicine Import Act prohibits the import of most prescription drugs into Austria. However, non- European Union residents are allowed medicines as part of their personal luggage, but only the quantity required for the period of time you’ll be in the country. Travelers may not receive medicine by mail from abroad while in Austria. If a particular medication is not available in Austria, an Austrian pharmacy may be able to order the medication prescribed by a local physician from a pharmacy in the United States.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most health care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our  webpage  for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals on its  website . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Austrian Ministry for Health  to ensure the medication is legal in Austria.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health Facilities

  • Austria has world class healthcare facilities throughout the country.
  • Hospitals and doctors often require payment “up front” or adequate health insurance prior to service or admission. Patients who need emergency or life-saving medical treatment will not be turned away for lack of payment or insurance.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website for information on Medical Tourism, the risks of medical tourism, and what you can do to prepare before traveling to Austria.
  • We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Many medications that are common in the United States are illegal in Austria, even with a prescription. Austria does not allow the importation of any pharmaceuticals that contain narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances. Obtaining such medications in Austria is either impossible or requires a diagnosis and prescription from an Austrian doctor. Please review the medication rules on the websites of the  Austrian Embassy  in Washington, D.C., and the  Austrian Health Ministry .
  • COVID-19 tests in Austria are widely available at local Apoteken (pharmacies), including rapid and PCR tests. U.S. citizens are responsible for paying for all costs upfront. Results are normally delivered by e-mail, test or you may request a physical copy from the lab.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine is available free of charge for U.S. citizen residents of Austria and hold valid Austrian healthcare E-cards. U.S. citizen visitors may be required to pay vaccination costs upfront.

Many cities in western Austria are at high altitude. Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and take precautions before you travel. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Travel to High Altitudes .

Adventure Travel: Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Road conditions in Austria are excellent. During the winter, roads in alpine areas may become dangerous due to snow, ice, or avalanches. Some mountain roads may be closed for extended periods. Snow tires or chains may be required in certain provinces or mountain towns. If you are renting a car in winter months and driving to a ski resort, check with your car rental company to ensure your vehicle is properly equipped.

Be alert when you drive through autobahn construction zones, particularly on the A-1 East/West Autobahn. Traffic information  and road conditions are broadcast on the  English-language channel, FM4 (frequency depends on location). Traffic information is posted on digital signs, and trackable in popular mobile apps. Emergency roadside help and information may be reached by dialing  123  or  120  for vehicle assistance and towing services (Austrian automobile clubs),  122  for the fire department,  133  for police, and  144  for ambulance. The European emergency line is  112 .

Traffic Laws : Please see Austria’s  travel webpage  for detailed information related to driving. Below are key laws to consider:

  • Penalties for  driving under the influence  are stricter than in many U.S. states.
  • Display an “ autobahn vignette ” highway-tax sticker  on the inside of the vehicle’s windshield. The fine for failing to display a valid sticker is EUR 120 ($150 USD), paid in cash “on the spot.”
  • The  maximum speed  limit is 130 km/hr (81mph) on the Austrian autobahns.
  • It is  against the law  to use a  hand-held cell  phone while driving.
  • It is  against the law  to turn  right on red .
  • It is  mandatory  for cars on Austrian motorways to pull over when an emergency vehicle is approaching. On two-lane roads or larger, vehicles pull over to either far left or far right to create an emergency corridor down the center.
  • You could be issued a substantial fine  for not usin  winter tires  on your vehicle between November 1 and April 15, depending where you are driving. Your car  insurance is void  if you are in an accident, and your vehicle does not havewinter tires.
  • Read your rental contract closely. You may be  arrested, fined , and/or charged with attempted auto theft if you try to drive a rental car in countries listed as “prohibited” on the car rental contract.
  • A U.S. driver's license  alone is  not sufficient to drive in Austria.  A U.S. driver's license must be accompanied by an international driving permit or by an official translation of the U.S. driver's license, which can be obtained in the United States at AAA, or at one of the Austrian automobile clubs (ÖAMTC or ARBÖ). U.S. citizens who intend to take up residence in Austria must obtain an Austrian driver’s license after six months of arriving.

Public Transportation:  Austrian Federal Railways ( Österreichische Bundesbahnen ) offers train service to all major towns in Austria and major cities in Europe. There is also an extensive network of Österreichische Post  bus lines . All major cities have excellent public transportation systems. Click  here  for Vienna’s public transportation website.

See our  road safety page  for more information. Visit the website of Austria’s  national tourist office  and national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Austria’s Civil Aviation Authority as compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Austria’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

How To Apply for an Austria Tourist Visa?

  • Step 1 - Apply in Advance: It is advisable to initiate your visa application process at least three weeks before your planned travel date. This ensures that you have sufficient time to complete all requirements. Be aware that appointment scheduling can be time-consuming, so plan accordingly.
  • Step 2 - Complete the Application Form Accurately: Fill out the visa application form with precision and honesty. Depending on the specific application process in your region, you may have the choice to complete the form online or manually. In either case, make sure you have two signed copies of the application form.
  • Step 3 - Pay the Visa Fee: The embassy, consulate, or visa application center will provide clear instructions on how to make the visa fee payment. Usually, you can make this payment online or through a bank transfer. Keep the payment confirmation and ensure it's included with your other documents.
  • Step 4 - Prepare for the Visa Interview: Familiarize yourself with common questions asked during Austrian tourist visa interviews. This preparation will help you respond confidently during the interview.
  • Step 5 - Verify Your Documents: Before submitting your application, thoroughly review all your documents to ensure you have everything required. This step is crucial to prevent any delays or issues during the application process.
  • Step 6 - Attend the Visa Appointment: On the day of your scheduled visa appointment, present yourself at the embassy, consulate, or visa application center. Arrive on time, neither too early nor too late, to submit your application.

As easy as it may seem, if you think carefully, you will realise that the Austrian embassy’s requirement that you book flight tickets, hotel accommodation and travel insurance in order to be eligible for the visa seems fair. This is one way to ensure that you are a genuine traveller visiting Austria only for tourism purposes.

The main purpose of hotel and flight reservations is to confirm your travel dates and overall itinerary and match it with what you have claimed in your application form. Having said that, it is quite a gamble at your end to pre-purchase flight tickets and pre-book hotel accommodation because you don’t even know for sure if your visa will get approved and on time for you to travel with the tickets you have bought. There have been several cases where Austria tourist visa applicants went ahead and bought flight tickets and paid for accommodation, but didn’t even get their visa on time. This is an absolutely disappointing situation to be in!

To help you through this process, at  Visa Reservation , we provide  flight reservation for visa  and  hotel reservation for visa application  that helps you minimize the risk associated with visa applications. What this means is that our team will create authentic flight and hotel reservations for you and your family, which you need not pay for upfront. These reservations come with a unique booking ID which can be used by the embassy to  verify your reservation . This is extremely useful for travellers because once your visa gets approved, you can just let us know and we will confirm the flights and accommodation for your chosen dates.

In at all your visa doesn’t get approved, these reservations can be easily cancelled or postponed, as opposed to pre-purchased flight tickets and hotel rooms. Therefore, you only pay for your flights and hotel once your visa is approved and your travel plans are confirmed.

If you have been thinking of applying for the Austria tourist visa for your upcoming holidays, we have you covered! No need to stress about the formalities and paperwork involved. Get in touch with our team and find a personalized travel package that suits your needs.

You have the option to opt for a package with only one of the 3 components – flight reservation, hotel reservation or travel insurance. Alternatively, you can also go for a package with a  combination of these 3 items . With our easy-to-use systems in place, your Austria tourist visa application will not seem intimidating any more!

Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended, that your passport is valid for at least six more months when entering Austria. Indians can now stay in Switzerland, Amsterdam for up to 2 years like visa-free nationals. Check details

W ith European Union (EU) adopting favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians, the strength of Indian passport is arguably set to grow with travel to 29 European countries getting seamless and hassle-free.

Incidentally, Indian passport is currently ranked at 85 , as per Henley Passport Index for 2024 that ranks 199 nations based on the strength of their passports. Our neigbouring country Pakistan is ranked at 106, while Bangladesh at 102.

Under the new Schengen visa regime , Indians will now be able to enter any of these European countries multiple times for two years, which is further extendable by 5 years, and stay there like a visa-free national.

This is a stark departure from the current practice. Until now, when Indians intend to travel to one or more European countries, they are meant to apply for the much sought-after Schengen visa, which is given for a maximum of three months.

ALSO READ: Indians can now apply for multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity. Check details

But now, under the cascade regime -- guess what? You can stay in Switzerland, Amsterdam, and/ or any other European countries such as Austria, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Germany, France, among others, for as long as five years without any hiccups.

According to a report in Aug 2023, Scandinavian region in Europe saw a substantial growth of 140 percent as of August 2023 in comparison to pre-COVID levels in 2020, according to insights from MakeMyTrip.

Let us understand how this will work:

How will this work?

This is primarily beneficial for those Indians who frequently travel to one or more of European countries. And if you have travelled to Europe on a Schengen visa for two times in the past three years, then you are eligible for this new visa category ‘cascade regime’ under which you will be given two-year multi entry visa and you can travel and stay in any of these countries just like an individual who does not require a visa to be there.

But the only catch is that you won’t be allowed to work and earn there like a local citizen.

This two-year visa will then be followed by a five-year visa so long as the passport has sufficient validity. For example, if the passport is set to expire three years later, then the visa seeker won’t be able to get the Schengen visa extended by five years.

"The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals," reads the statement shared by Herve Delphin, Ambassador, Delegation of European Union to India on ‘X’ Platform.

5-year post-study visa in France

This Schengen move is testimony to growing partnership between Europe and India. Last year, France also eased its visa rules for inbound Indian students.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited France in July 2023, the European nation had extended five-year post-study visa to Indian students who had completed their master's degree there.

Earlier, Indians were given two-year work visa after completing their master's degree.

You can not work and earn like a local citizen in Europe under the Schengen visa.
