13 Jun A Budget Traveler’s Guide to Charleston South Carolina

CHARLESTON South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina is a city that completely embodies the term ‘southern charm!’ Chucktown is full of pastel colored buildings, rustic palm trees, dainty carriages, savory fried food, gallons of sweet tea, and lovely people! I’ve visited Charleston twice now: once on a weekend trip with family, and a second time along a 3 month road trip around the U.S. with my sister. It was first stop on our trip, and I was eager to show my sister this aesthetically pleasing, easy going city. In the same way, I’m excited to share all that Charleston has to offer with you, too!

Although a city, Charleston can be visited on a budget ! (I would know, being on such a long road trip I couldn’t spend all my money from the start!) But this does not mean you have to sacrifice on experience. Charleston has so much to offer even for the low budget traveler, so read on!

Even if you’re not religious, this is a building worth the admiration. St. John the Baptist Cathedral is lined with vibrant stain-glassed windows and is a peaceful place to pray or meditate. It’s also really easy to access, as it stands right on Broad St. in the Historic District.

CHEAP-ER PLACES TO EAT IN CHARLESTON

In Charleston there is no shortage of good food! However, it can tend to be pricey. When my sister and I visited, we tried not eating out too much for that very reason (hence our amazing picnic); however, soul food is part of the Charleston experience and it is possible to indulge in, even if you’re on a budget!

JESTINE’S KITCHEN

Jestine’s Kitchen is for sure a touristy spot, but it’s delicious! My sister and I actually didn’t plan this one, just stumbled upon it and I’m happy we did! The food was tasty, the price reasonable, and the restaurant has a backstory.

The great thing about Charleston is its warmer climate so it’s able to be visited year round. However there are better times to go like Spring (March – May) and Fall (September – November). Of course during these popular periods expect hotel prices to be higher. During winter temperatures drop to high 50’s °F which is chilly but not freezing, and during summer it can be quite hot and humid, but doable.

When visiting Charleston, (and any place for that matter), be sure to keep an open mind and use this post as a guide rather than an itinerary! There’s always more to see and new places to explore that are not always in the tourist areas of a city. Let the charm of Charleston and the smell of southern cooking sweep you anywhere you wish!

Budget Breakdown: Comprehensive Guide to Saving Money in Charleston

two beautiful churches in Charleston - charleston on a budget

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning if you buy or book through one of these links, I may earn a small commission .

Is Charleston on your list of beautiful cities to visit, but you aren’t in a place where money is no object to you? I can relate. The good news is that there are ways to manage your spending in Charleston and keep costs to an absolute minimum. It is definitely possible to visit Charleston on a budget.

Whenever I travel, I always have constraints on my spending, so I budget in advance what I reasonably think everything will cost. Over time, I’ve gotten pretty good at this and my budgets are almost always spot on. It’s funny too, because I’ve also pinpointed where our biggest budget weakness is – drinking (we love our wine and craft beer!) .

Without planning or knowing what you’re spending, it’s easy to let any travel budget go off the rails. That’s why today I’m laying out for you what a trip to Charleston actually costs, and breaking down all the ways you can make your southern getaway as cheap as possible. At the end of the day, you want to make sure no matter what your budget, you’re getting the best experience that Charleston has to offer.

Here is what to expect from the cost of a one or two person trip to Charleston (in USD):

spreadsheet showing costs of visiting charleston on a moderate budget

Above are the actual costs from a trip that my husband, Aaron, and I recently took to Charleston. As you can see, we splurged in some areas, while saving in others. As we were not aiming to make our trip as cheap as possible, I would consider this to be a moderate budget.

If you are trying to visit Charleston on an even thinner budget, you will need to trim some of this down to make it cheaper. Don’t worry, though, because it’s definitely possible, and we’re about to discuss all the ways you can do that. We are going to be really nickel-and-diming it here, so stay patient with me as we chisel this thing down.

Cost of Getting to Charleston

If driving to Charleston is feasible, this could be the cheapest mode of transportation for your budget, since you’d save on airfare, car rental, and Ubers. However, you may not want to drive if you are like my husband and I, and face a twelve hour journey down Interstate 77. As people who maximize our PTO days every year, wasting a precious vacation day on a full day of driving is not usually our first choice.

If you do prefer to fly, there are definitely still ways to make this inexpensive. Our recent 3 day trip to Charleston was largely driven by Frontier Airlines’ new cheap direct flight to Charleston. We never pass on direct flights from Cleveland, since they are so few and far between – especially to an amazing city like Charleston.

colorful houses of the rainbow row in charleston, south carolina

Frontier is a budget airline, so this flight was about $120 a person, or $240 total for both of us to fly round trip. With Frontier you do have to pay extra for any baggage besides a personal item, but Aaron and I managed to mitigate this by sharing one extra carry-on bag between us.

I did write a whole post on the easy ways I find cheap flights . For your convenience, though, I’ve included some of my top flight-buying tips below:

  • For dirt cheap prices, fly a budget airline, like Spirit or Frontier .
  • Avoid high season swells by traveling in the off-season (December through March).
  • Consider purchasing your plane tickets at the airport. Many budget airlines charge an extra fee for online purchases.
  • Keep extra bags to a minimum. If you can fit all your things into a book bag, you won’t need to bring anything beyond a personal item.
  • Do not pay to pick your seat on the plane, even if you are traveling with someone. Instead, check in as early as possible to get your seat assigned before the rest of the masses check in. Most of the time, you will still get seats together.
  • Get a travel rewards credit card , like one of my two favorites: Capital One Venture or Chase Sapphire Reserve . Simply use these cards for your every day purchases, and watch the free flight rewards roll in.

If you choose to fly a budget airline, buy your flights at the airport, and only bring what will fit into a personal item for your flight, here is what your new budget will look like:

Cost of Renting a Car in Charleston

If you are driving to Charleston, then renting a car is an expense you will not need to worry about. However, if you are flying, the best way to stay on a budget when visiting Charleston is to forgo renting a car at all because you largely won’t need one. The city is super walkable, and you can Uber or taxi from the airport to your lodging.

To keep expenses as low as possible, I would focus on spending your time in downtown Charleston, where you will largely be able to walk everywhere. My husband and I did not take one Uber during our time there. In fact, we even walked to our nice dinner at Husk . I just wore sneakers for the twenty minute walk and changed into heels upon arrival. The walk was much needed anyhow, with the heavy meal we were about to have!

Here is what you can expect your budget to look like if, in addition to the flight tips above, you forgo renting a car in Charleston. Note: I bumped up Uber a little, since you’d still need to get to and from the airport, and may use it for an additional short trip or two.

Cost of Eating & Drinking in Charleston

Restaurants are the hardest area to avoid overspending your limited funds when traveling to Charleston on a budget. The Holy City has a huge restaurant scene, from casual to sophisticated to a tad snobby, with almost all of it being pure southern deliciousness. It would be a shame to come to Charleston and not even be able to dabble in any of this goodness.

If you’d like to make the most of Charleston’s food scene, for less, consider visiting during Charleston Restaurant Week . With preset multi-course menus at fixed prices as low as $15, this annual event offers incredible value and the chance to try a wide variety of Charleston’s restaurants.

Here is what your adjusted budget will look like if, in addition to the cost savings discussed above, you minimize any drinks while in Charleston and cut back on dining expenses. This budget allows you to still partake in Charleston’s amazing dining scene, while forgoing extras like drinks, appetizers or dessert in favor of a great entree, or perhaps eating appetizers as your entree.

Avoid Shopping in Charleston to Stay on Budget

Being that you are traveling to Charleston on a budget, I do not recommend spending any money shopping during your trip. It will be better spent checking out historical homes or the exciting food scene.

In general, Charleston shopping tends to be high end, with designer retailers and fancy art galleries, which is not conducive to saving money. If you’d still like to partake in some way, there’s no harm in window shopping!

The $24.52 from the original budget is from a coaster I bought at a gift shop during our recent trip. For the ultimate cheap trip to Charleston, I recommend you skip souvenirs, even if they seem inexpensive. To avoid those little costs that tend to add up, take lots of pictures to remember your trip instead!

Lodging in Charleston

When traveling to Charleston on a budget, lodging is another area to keep as inexpensive as possible. The best way to do this is avoiding, unfortunately, the more convenient, modern, and stylish hotels. That’s no cause for concern, though, as you can still find amazing places to stay without blowing your budget.

Option #1: Stay at a Historic Bed & Breakfast

romantic rope lighting on patio of 1837 bed and breakfast in the evening

2023 Note: The 1837 Bed and Breakfast (mentioned below) had a change in ownership at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, the level of service has taken a nose dive. Therefore, I do not recommend booking this bed and breakfast for the time being.

While not dirt cheap or the most modern, you can definitely find affordable bed and breakfasts in walking distance of downtown Charleston. Bed and breakfasts are actually my preferred type of lodging, as I love their historical vibes, overall coziness, and quiet intimacy.

One place I recently stayed at that I would 100% recommend is the 1837 Bed and Breakfast. While not right in the main historic center of Charleston, the 1837 Bed and Breakfast is in a pretty neighborhood, and only about a twenty minute walk from places like the Insta-famous Rainbow Row.

Here are two ways that staying in a historic bed and breakfast can actually save you money:

  • Since breakfast is included in the cost of the room, this is one less meal you need to buy. If it’s big enough, you may even be able to skip lunch.
  • Some places, such as the 1837 Bed and Breakfast, have a small parking lot, where you can park free of charge. This can save you so much money if your alternative is paying to park overnight for several days at a hotel.

Option #2: Try One of These Other Cost-Saving Tips

colorful row of buildings making up The Vendue in Charleston

If you don’t want to stay at a historic bed and breakfast, here are more ideas for saving money:

  • Stay somewhere outside of downtown Charleston to see hotel prices drastically decrease. Just know you’ll now need to Uber or taxi into downtown Charleston (if you didn’t drive), which will increase transportation costs. You may still save money doing this, but just try to minimize how often you Uber.
  • Visit Charleston in the off-season to avoid spikes during its most popular times. In general, mid to late spring and early fall are its most expensive seasons.

I’m not gonna beat around the bush with you; staying in downtown Charleston is pricey, and it’s hard to find much under $200 a night. In general, the further you stay outside of downtown, the cheaper it gets, and the more you get for your money. Here is an update, based on finding possible lower prices downtown, but the savings are minor.

14 Free Things to do in Charleston

There are plenty of free things to do in Charleston that will more than let you fully enjoy a weekend in this beautiful city. Below are some of the top things you can do to immerse yourself in Charleston without spending any money.

The Tavern at Rainbow Row's free Friday whiskey tasting

  • Try the free whiskey tasting at the Tavern at Rainbow Row on Friday or Saturday afternoon
  • See the George Washington painting at City Hall
  • Walk to the Pineapple Fountain at the Waterfront Park
  • Stroll past gorgeous old colonial homes on Church Street
  • Visit some of the pretty churches in town, such as the iconic Saint Michael’s Church, with its tall white tower
  • Drive a half hour out of Charleston to see the twisted limbs of the 400 year old Angel Oak
  • Pop into some of the galleries in town. It’s not free if you end up buying something, but you definitely don’t need to pay to browse!

  • Drive or walk over the Cooper River via the iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge
  • Have a beach day at Sullivan’s Island
  • Admire the historic, albeit condemned, Morris Island lighthouse
  • Visit one of Charleston’s free museums

If you don’t mind paying for a few activities while in Charleston, I highly recommend doing a historic walking tour with Two Sisters and visiting the Aiken-Rhett House Museum . Here is an updated budget that factors in these two paid things to do in Charleston:

Pet Boarding

Are you like me, and have a fur baby that needs care while you are gone? Much as I’d love to take our little puppy boy with us, he does not share our same interest in travel, and rather prefers routine.

Unfortunately, having a pet can add an extra complication and often expense to your travel plans. We often cannot find someone to watch our dog, and therefore pay about $40 a night to board him. Here are the best ways around this type of expense:

  • Option 1: Bring your pet with you. If they travel well, this may be a good option for you. Just keep in mind that some lodging will charge extra for this, if they even allow pets at all. If you need to bring a lot of additional supplies for your pet, this may also cause you to pay extra for baggage on your flight.
  • Option 2: Find a family member or friend who will watch your pet (hopefully for free). This is my preferred option, although sometimes it’s hard to find a person who is willing. If your pet gets along well with others, it may help you to make a deal with another friend with a pet to watch each others’ animals while the other is traveling.

If you don’t have a pet, or have a kind family member or friend who is willing to watch them for free, here is what your budget will look like:

cost to visit the Holy City if you don't have pet expenses

Finally: Can You Share Any of These Costs?

Traveling with another couple or party who can share the financial burden makes a huge difference. While costs for things like meals or admission into places won’t change, things like lodging and taxis/Ubers can be cut in half. This opens up a lot more options for your trip!

For example, say you were ruling out staying in downtown Charleston due to the cost of lodging. You looked at places downtown, such as the King Charles Inn , and decided $300 and up a night was too much for you to pay.

However, you later invite another couple to join you on your trip, and agree to share one hotel room for your stay. Suddenly, the $1,067 you would have had to pay for three nights is halved to only $533, which comes to $178 a night. Now, you have the option to stay at the King Charles Inn in downtown Charleston, which means you’ll have more convenience and spend way less money on Ubering back and forth.

It’s true that now you’d have to plan your trip around the wants and needs of another party. However, if you’re traveling to Charleston on a budget, this sacrifice might be worth it for what you gain in financial savings and spending options.

charleston on a budget when splitting costs

I believe we’ve whittled this Charleston budget down about as far as it will go. While you should definitely be a frugal traveler, do also try to save up some funds to spend where it counts. That way, you can make the most of your time eating and exploring in the historical and charming city of Charleston. If you are smart in your planning, those will end up being some dollars that you definitely won’t regret spending!

The Weather in Charleston

  • Peak Season
  • Hurricane Season
  • Frequently Asked Questions

Charleston 's colorful historic homes and cobblestone streets, world-class museums, and nearby beaches make it a popular destination. And while the weather is moderate year-round, the best times to visit Charleston are from March to May and from September to November. In the spring, the flowers are in full bloom, the heat and humidity haven't set in, and hurricane season hasn't begun. Come fall, there are fewer crowds, cheaper hotel rooms, and ideal temperatures.

Whenever you decide to make your journey, use this guide to plan your next trip.

Located on the South Carolina coast, Charleston has a subtropical climate , which makes temperatures and conditions favorable almost all year. In winter, highs are in the mid-50s and rarely dip below freezing, even at night. Summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s and low 90s—especially in the city proper. This is a good time to take advantage of nearby beaches, but you'll want to pack an umbrella: August is the city's wettest month. Spring and fall offer the most favorable weather, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s, sparse humidity, and little rain.

Peak Season in Charleston

There are two peak seasons in Charleston. The first is in spring, from March to May. This is when the magnolia trees and azaleas are in full bloom, the temperatures are mild, and annual events like the Charleston Food & Wine Festival and Spoleto Festival USA are in full swing. The city is a particularly popular destination during the Easter holidays and spring break, so expect hotel rates to soar and attractions to be crowded.

The second peak comes in the fall (between September and November), when the temperatures cool off, the humidity is less stifling, and the city is ideal for walking and exploring.

Hurricane Season in Charleston

Because of its location on the Eastern Seaboard, the city is at risk for hurricanes. Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30 annually, with peak time between August and October. However, South Carolina has a lower risk of hurricanes than Florida or other states on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. On average, only 11 percent of all hurricanes making landfall since 1851 have hit South Carolina; only six of them were Category 3 or higher.

While odds are unlikely you'll encounter a hurricane during your trip, most hotels and airlines will refund or rebook your trip if you do. You can also purchase hurricane insurance as an extra precaution.

Winter in Charleston

Winter is off-season in Charleston, with crowds dissipating after the holidays and remaining sparse through early spring. Expect cheaper hotel rates, fewer tourists, and relatively mild temperatures, with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s and lows in the mid-40s. If you plan to do a lot of walking, layer and pack a warm jacket: It can get quite breezy and chilly, especially by the waterfront.

Events to check out:

  • Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island : This can't-miss event features a 3-mile driving tour through a display of lights, s'more roasting stations, carousel and train rides, and other activities for the whole family. It takes place during the holiday season from mid-November through the end of December.
  • Southeastern Wildlife Exposition : A three-day event in February that includes conservation education, sporting events, art exhibitions, and other events dedicated to wildlife and nature.

Spring in Charleston

With ideal temperatures and the entire city in bloom, spring is peak season in Charleston. Hotel rates are at their highest here, and you'll fight crowds for popular attractions; buy your tickets and make your dinner reservations in advance.

  • Charleston Food + Wine Festival : Held the first week in March, the festival features culinary demonstrations, food and beverage tastings, and educational sessions with some of the country's top food personalities like Katie Button and Edward Lee.
  • Festival of Houses and Gardens : For a few weeks in March and April, tour some of the city's finest private homes and gardens at this annual festival. It also includes culinary demonstrations, walking tours, and musical performances.
  • Charleston Jazz Festival : A weekend-long celebration in April that hosts internationally-renowned musicians like Regina Carter as well as local blues, Brazilian, and other artists.
  • Spoleto Festival USA : This performing arts festival takes place in venues throughout the city over three weeks in May and June. From opera and chamber music to dance, jazz, theater, and more, the festival is a one-of-a-kind celebration of the arts.

Summer in Charleston

Summers can be oppressively hot and humid in Charleston, but air conditioning is plentiful, and the nearby beaches offer some respite from the weather. You'll still find larger crowds through the 4th of July holiday, but in general, the city is less crowded and rates are lower during this time of year. Pack rain gear for August as it's the city's wettest month.

  • Celebrate Independence Day at Patriots Point : This has the area's largest fireworks display. Purchase a ticket to watch them aboard the historic USS Yorktown, or pack a cooler and plop a chair down on the land nearby (there is a small parking fee).
  • Freshfields Village Starlight Cinema Series : Enjoy movies under the stars at this free film series. The event takes place at Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island. Check the schedule to see what's playing and at what time.

Fall in Charleston

Fall marks another peak time to visit Charleston, when temperatures cool off and summer beach visitors retreat for the school year. You can expect comfortable temperatures in the 60s and 70s well into November, but do be aware of hurricanes and tropical storms.

  • Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch : From a corn maze to a petting zoo, rock climbing wall, and hayride, Boone Hall offers autumnal fun for the whole family throughout the month of October.
  • Preservation Society of Charleston's Self-Guided Monthly Fall Tours : Explore the city's finest homes and gardens ranging from 18th-century homes to modern dwellings via these tours in October.

The best times to visit Charleston are from March through May and from September through November. In the spring, temperatures are mild and you avoid hurricane season. In the fall, crowds dwindle and hotel and airfare rates are cheaper.

Charleston is best enjoyed over a three-day, long weekend. The city's manageable size allows you to experience the most pertinent sites—like top-notch restaurants and vibrant art galleries—with a short trip.

Charleston is known for its deep-rooted history, complete with a historic downtown area and market, the Old Slave Mart Museum, and Patriot's Point.

Best Times To Visit Charleston, SC

The best time to visit Charleston is from March to May or from September to November when temperatures are mild – but not stifling. Hotel rates, however, will be high, especially around Easter. Also, the city will be thick with crowds "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" at the blooming magnolia trees, the Southern fried food and their tour guide's ghost stories. Steer clear of high prices and tourist swarms by visiting in the late fall or early winter.

What is Charleston best known for?

Charleston is best known for delicious food, great beer and southern charm, no contest! Some of the best restaurants in the world call Charleston home. Charleston is a uniquely beautiful place, with a special charm that is impossible to replicate anywhere else in the country.

Delicious Food: The food in Charleston is phenomenal! There are so many spots for some of the best food that the south has to offer. From seafood to Southern comfort food, there is something for everyone!

Great Beer: There are so many breweries in Charleston that we can’t visit them all! My favorites are Commonhouse Aleworks, Edmunds Oast Brewing Co., Munkle Brewing Co. and Low Tide Brewing! But honestly, there’s so many all around the Charleston area that you really can’t go wrong.

Southern Charm: That southern charm that southern people are so well known for is truly a thing in Charleston! The people of this city are ridiculously friendly and welcoming. It doesn’t matter if you are from out of state or if you have been living there your entire life, they will make you feel at home.

Is Charleston SC expensive to visit?

It’s all relative but, if you’re staying in downtown Charleston or visiting during a busy time of the year – Charleston can get expensive. But it doesn’t have to be!

The white bridge at Magnolia Plantation

Here are some ways to make Charleston SC less expensive:

Don’t stay in downtown charleston, use points and miles for your hotel or accommodations, eat where the locals eat, find the free activities.

There are times of the year where you can get an inexpensive place to stay downtown, but the hotels on King Street are very expensive. Try looking at hotels in the surrounding areas like Mount Pleasant, West Ashley or closer to the airport.

Charleston is a small city, so these areas will be a short drive from the city center. Also, these areas will be closer to some iconic Plantations and other areas of interest.

I will always mention this tip! If you have your heart set on staying in downtown Charleston, you can off set the cost by redeeming points and miles that you get from using credit cards, loyalty programs, shopping portals etc. I have some posts on this!

  • How to Plan a weekend trip on a budget: The easy way!
  • Easy tips to save on holiday travel.
  • Simple ways to save money for your next vacation.

Any restaurants in touristy areas are going to be expensive and they are not always the best just because everyone goes there. It’s the restaurants off the beaten path, the “hole in the walls” that you really want!

There’s honestly so many free things to do in Charleston! Read on for a list!

How many days do I need in Charleston?

4 days in Charleston SC is the perfect amount of time to soak in all the history and experience what the city has to offer. Charleston is a charming city. Whether you are looking to explore the history, culture, or art of the city, or you just want to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather, Charleston is a perfect fit for you!

What is the best month to visit Charleston SC?

The fall months, October through November are probably the best months to spend 4 days in Charleston SC. It will be less crowded in the fall, but the Spring is also a great time to visit. However, I have visited in January and in July and those were amazing as well.

January was a little chilly, but the city was not crowded so we loved it! We stayed on Kiawah Island on the beach and it was magical! I don’t love laying out on the beach when it’s hot, but taking walks on the beach when it’s a little chilly is my favorite!

Although it can get chilly during the fall and winter months (even early spring), when the sun is out it doesn’t matter.

We visited during July 4th one year and had the best time. Charleston had so many great activities and a restaurant on the water at Shem Creek even had their own fireworks. We had a table at Saltwater Cowboys and had a blast!

Basically, you can’t go wrong when visiting Charleston any month out of the year!

Getting to Charleston

The most efficient way to get to Charleston is by plane. We live in South Florida and have both driven and flown to Charleston. Flying is hands down the way to go! Getting to and around Charleston is quite easy. The city is located on the South Carolina coast, near the border with North Carolina.

However, if you do need to drive it’s pretty easy to get to Charleston by car. Charleston SC is centrally located between Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head. It has access to several highways and is a relatively short drive from cities in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky.

Fly Breeze Airways non-stop to Charleston

We got lucky because Breeze Airways started offering non-stop flights from PBI to CHS. They were the only airline offering a non-stop flight and it was super affordable! This was our first time flying Breeze Airways and it was great. Breeze Airways was founded by David Neeleman who also cofounded Jetblue, so we knew that it would be a breeze (see what I did there)!

Breeze Airways has several non stop flights going in and out of CHS to many cities throughout the country. So, if you haven’t checked out Breeze Airways yet this is your cue!

The easiest way to find flights is to use Google’s free flight tool – Google Flights . You can set flight alerts and book a deal when you see one! Most airlines let you cancel within 24 hours no questions asked and if it’s after 24 hours then you can usually cancel or change your flight without penalty (just pay the difference for the new flight).

Firefly Distillery

Drinking a cocktail at the firefly distillery in Charleston SC

Firefly Distillery has some of best spirits that we have ever enjoyed. I’d recommend signing up for a tasting, you get a shot glass and taste 12 spirits! Well, it’s actually 6, but if you have 2 people you can share. They have 2 spirits each round that you can choose from.

I love how some options can be mixed together like the lemonade (made with fresh lemons!) and the sweet tea to make an Arnold Palmer. Some of the spirits taste exactly like dessert, my favorite is the Pecan Pie. It comes in a whiskey or vodka. It’s honestly so delicious!

The distillery is a great place to spend the day as well. They serve cocktails that you can enjoy outside under the pavilion. There’s also monthly events including live music and food trucks. It’s really a fun and family friendly place to be.

Other Favorite Breweries and Distilleries

  • Holy City Brewing
  • Low Tide Brewing
  • Estuary Beans and Barley shares a parking lot with Charleston Distilling Co.
  • Commonhouse Aleworks
  • Ship’s Wheel – Hard Cider

Commonhouse Aleworks and Ship’s Wheel are located on Park Circle which is a great place for shopping, restaurants and bars!

Deep Water Vineyard

We're taking a picture in front of the Deep Water Vineyard Tasting Room

Deep Water Vineyard is a little further out on Wadmalaw Island, but it’s also a great way to spend an afternoon. They grow muscadine grapes which if you’ve never had muscadine wine can be very different, but they have partnerships with other vineyards and serve other varietals as well. They also serve Mead from their brand Bears Bluff Meadery.

We loved the vibe at Deep Water, they host events and 4 main festivals every year. You should definitely check them out and visit their website!

Where is a good place to stay in Charleston SC?

You can stay in downtown which can be expensive, but there are a few hotels that I would recommend staying at or at least visiting! I like Hilton hotels, but Marriott has a lot of great hotels in the area as well.

If you don’t stay downtown, you can stay in the surrounding areas like West Ashley or Mount Pleasant or closer to Charleston International airport. The surrounding areas are 15-20 mins from downtown Charleston.

Day Trips from Charleston

One of the best things about a 4-day weekend in Charleston, SC and a long weekend itinerary is that you can spend a day or two and discover the surrounding areas . There are plenty of nearby places to visit, and with the Lowcountry being so close, it’s easy to get out of the city and into natural beauty.

The Ocean Course Clubhouse at the Kiawah Island Resort - one of the options for a day trip during a 4 days in Charleston SC itinerary

Kiawah Island SC

Kiawah Island is only about 45-60 mins from downtown Charleston, but it’s a day trip affair. The Kiawah Island Golf Resort is definitely worth a visit. There are great restaurants, golf courses, a spa and just an all around beautiful place. The Spa at The Sanctuary is the only 5 Star, 5 Diamond Spa in the state of South Carolina.

The resort has 5 golf courses, one of which is the world renowned Ocean Course. The Ocean course was the home of the 2021 PGA Championship and the back drop for the movie The Legend of Bagger Vance.

The Ocean Course Club house is a great spot to sit for lunch, have a drink and just watch the golfers at the 18th hole with the ocean behind them. They partner with Low Tide brewing to serve their house special “The Ocean Course Ale”. It’s super tasty!

The Ocean Course Ale at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Isle of Palms SC

On our most recent trip to Charleston, we could not get a tee time at Kiawah Island resort, so we drove out about 45-60 mins to Isle of Palms SC to golf at Wild Dunes Charleston’s Island Resort . The course had beautiful scenery and honestly may even be our first choice on our next trip!

Wild Dunes Charleston’s Island Resort is owned by Hyatt Hotels and has 4 different options for accommodations – Sweet Grass Inn, Boardwalk Inn, Residences at Sweet Grass and Wild Dunes Vacation rentals.

Montage Palmetto Bluff SC

The Montage Palmetto Bluff Resort is a gorgeous resort offering golf, dining and experiences like bike riding or a shooting club. It’s definitely worth the drive for the scenery alone. The Montage Palmetto Bluff Resort is about 2 hours from Charleston SC.

Ready for your trip to Charleston SC?

10 Things No One Tells You About... Charleston, SC

Rocky Vitali

For a long time, Charleston's had a reputation as a specimen of the antebellum South trapped in amber, but in recent years it has transformed into one of the top travel destinations in the world, drawing in visitors with its horse-drawn carriages, cobblestone streets, award-winning restaurants, beautiful sandy beaches and charming historic district. But despite the millions of visitors each year, only a select few experience the city like a true local. Here are 10 insider tips to help you make the best of your next trip to Chucktown.

1. Know the Best Ways to Get Around Town

Uber is without a doubt the best way to get around Charleston. The local taxis take longer and cost more, and there are loads of Uber drivers around so you'll be able to find a ride anywhere within minutes. If you're only navigating downtown, though, take advantage of the Charleston Regional Transportation Authority, or CARTA, a free trolley that services the historic peninsula area. Look for the official green CARTA signs along the street. There are three routes, all of which converge at the Visitor Center, Marion Park and Charleston Museum — here's a printable trolley map . If you're looking to get around on the water, check out HOBA, a new app created by a local that's essentially Uber on the water.

2. Discover the Bridge to Nowhere

If you want to watch the sunset over the water in one of the most secluded areas of Charleston, look no further than the Bridge to Nowhere, an unfinished platform that stretches across the marsh from the Wagener Terrace neighborhood in the upper peninsula, starting downtown at Herlot Street and trickling into the open marshland of the Ashley River. What was once supposed to be a developed residential and commercial area is now an abandoned plot of waterfront property. If you're downtown and want to escape the crowds for a quiet sunset on the water, then follow the Bridge to Nowhere until you reach, well, somewhere. Plus, the odds of seeing dolphins are in your favor.

3. Hang With Locals at Happy Hour

Quite possibly one of the best things about Charleston is its lively happy hour scene. It doesn't matter what day of the week it is — there always seem to be food and drink specials that draw in crowds to pack the house. Tourists often make the mistake of going out after 8:00pm, when really they should be joining the locals between 4:00pm and 7:00pm for food and drink specials, live music and the chance to see real Charlestonians blowing off steam after a long day. A few of my favorites include half-off sushi at Locals Bar in Mt. Pleasant on Mondays after 3:00pm, or $5 Moscow Mules at The Rarebit in downtown Charleston any weekday between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Water's Edge on Shem Creek offers cheap beers with a waterfront view, but my favorite happy hour in town is at Barsa Lounge and Bar on upper King Street, where every day (besides Sunday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm) you'll find incredible paella specials along with some the cheapest drink deals in town — go on Thursday after 7:00pm for live jazz.

4. Avoid the Usual Tourist Traps

Every city has tourist traps, and Charleston is no exception. Don't be fooled by cheap marketing tricks when you're strolling past rows of restaurants with lines bustling around the corner — stay away from places like Hyman's Seafood and Jestine's Kitchen, which always have a line of suckers waiting outside the door. Put down the free tourist map and ask around. Everyone in Charleston is friendly and full of advice. For the juiciest burger in town, head to the Tattooed Moose and order a side of duck-fat fries. Pop into Revelry Brewing Co. and swig a fresh beer on its new rooftop. For a fancy night out, order a steak at Halls Chophouse followed by a locally brewed peanut-butter-and-jelly beer downtown at Edmund's Oast. Find top-notch seafood at Coast Bar and Grill, then head to King Street and follow the sounds of live music playing. If you want to eat or drink on the water, Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, pictured below, is the place to be.

5. Don't Miss First Friday on Broad

On the first Friday of every month from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, you'll find locals gathering for a highly anticipated event that combines art with free wine. Located on Broad Street in the Charleston Historic District, everyone is welcome to browse from one art gallery, boutique or bodega to the next while enjoying complimentary refreshments like wine and cocktails. The event is known to locals as the Art Walk Downtown. Best of all, admission is free so it's easy to spot the crowds of people strolling along Broad Street and join in on the fun.

6. Cast Away at Botany Bay Plantation

Known to Charleston locals as Botany Bay, the majestic beach officially known as the Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area is a must-see for those seeking a magnificently preserved stretch of shoreline. Countless seashells are sprinkled between hundreds of gorgeous deadwood trees emerging out of the sand and water — you'll feel like Tom Hanks in Cast Away on this untouched and carefully protected seashore. Folly Beach and Sullivan's Island are great if you're in the market for a typical sandy experience, but if you want to see a beach that hasn't been trampled and abused yet, put Botany Bay at the top of your list.

7. Check Out All the Free Attractions

Charleston can be an expensive city if you don't know where to look. To help stick to your budget, try checking out some of the city's best freebies, like taking a complimentary tour at the Charleston Tea Plantation or admiring the stunning floral display at Hampton Park. The Angel Oak is one of Charleston's top attractions and it's totally free. I recommend spending a full day walking around downtown to visit the historical sites; you'd be surprised how many of them offer free entry. You can also book a free walking tour with Free Tours by Foot and choose between four different focuses: the Civil War, haunted Charleston, history or architecture. If it's sweltering hot outside, cool off in the splash fountain at Waterfront Park.

8. Take A Silent Stroll Toward Morris Island Lighthouse

Although you can't actually get to the lighthouse itself without a boat, it's still a perfect spot to go for a long, peaceful walk along the water. Go to the north end of the island until you reach the cul-de-sac, then park your car and walk 10 minutes until you reach the private beach facing the lighthouse — you'll be completely saturated in nature, surrounded by only sand and water. Bring a hammock and let yourself slip into an afternoon of complete relaxation. Stick around for sunset and admire the vibrant colors reflecting off the water that surrounds you.

9. Stop by the Saturday Farmers Market

Every Saturday from April 8 to November 25, the Charleston Farmers Market is held downtown at Marion Square from 8:00am to 2:00pm. It's the perfect opportunity to sample the best of Charleston all in one place and you'll find local farmers, artisans, performers and food trucks lined up along the park to showcase their finest. Satisfy your caffeine itch with a freshly brewed coffee, indulge in a savory crepe or hand-pick your own produce. Keep an eye out for the popular group of breakdancers next to the fountain on the corner of King and Calhoun streets — they're easy to spot because there's always a massive crowd around watching them and you may even be picked to participate in one of their performances.

Spend a lazy Saturday afternoon at the market. Image courtesy of julief514 via Getty Images.

10. Visit the Dolphin Hot Spot

Only the locals know precisely where to go to find dolphins at every sunrise and sunset. My favorite viewing spot is the Station 12 beach access on Sullivan's Island — there are clearly marked signs for each station, and number 12 is located right next to Fort Moultrie. Walk a few minutes down the narrow path until you hit the beach, and you'll have a mile's stretch in the direction of the Cooper River. Once you reach the end of the walkable part of the beach, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of Charleston's famous Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and a front-row seat to the dozens of dolphins breaking over the waves as close as 100 feet from the shoreline.

Best Time to Visit Charleston, SC

A taste of southern charm: all you need to know before you visit charleston.

Best Time to Visit Charleston, SC

Dine on gourmet low country cuisine, stroll along pristine beaches, ride in a horse-drawn carriage and explore antebellum mansions all in one majestic city – Charleston , South Carolina. Although it's rare, during certain times of the year, Charleston can provide less than idyllic conditions, including harsh weather, exorbitant hotel rates and hordes of tourists. Keep your dream vacation intact by knowing exactly how and when to visit Charleston.

When should I visit Charleston?

If you’re planning your trip to Charleston around the weather, you’ll probably find the most comfortable conditions during the spring, when there’s little humidity, and daytime temperatures range from the mid-60s to high 70s. Although the city can be very crowded during the spring, it’s also the best time to see the flowering trees and azaleas in full bloom. If you’re looking to avoid crowds and save some money during your vacation, however, Charleston has very few tourists and an abundance of affordable hotel rooms in the late fall.

What’s the weather like in Charleston?

Charleston’s subtropical climate produces mild winters with temperatures usually hovering around the high 50s and low 60s. The city starts to warm up a bit in the early spring, and, by May, midday temperatures usually climb to the low 80s, and tourists start heading for the beaches. Charleston really heats up in the summer as scorching temps hit the high 80s or low 90s, with humidity that can reach 100 percent. The summer season also brings mosquitoes and close to 6 to 7 inches of rain, so make sure you pack your umbrella and bring plenty of bug spray. Things start to cool off as temperatures drop to the low 80s by early autumn and to the high 60s by late fall. While hurricane season usually occurs between June 1 and November 30, hurricanes rarely make landfall in Charleston.

When are the peak and off-peak tourist seasons in Charleston?

Spring is a peak season for Charleston, with particularly high hotel rates around Easter. In addition to warm but comfortable temperatures, springtime tourists are drawn to the city by the popular Festival of Houses and Gardens, during which they can tour some of the city’s historic homes. September through early November is also peak season as tourists pour into the city for such popular foodie events as Charleston Restaurant Week and Taste of Charleston.

Although the heat actually scares off some visitors in the summer, the beaches are more crowded than they are all year. Winter is the city’s off-season, and you can sometimes find affordable hotel packages that include carriage rides and plantation tours. There is a slight surge, however, during the Holiday Festival of Lights, which takes place in James Island County Park from November through January, and around Valentine’s Day.

How can I avoid the crowds in Charleston?

While you won’t avoid the crowds at Charleston’s most beloved eateries, you can avoid the long lines by making reservations. But plan ahead, as some of the city’s most popular restaurants, such as Husk and Hominy Grill, require reservations made months in advance.

For a peaceful beach experience, make the 45-minute drive from Charleston to Kiawah Island. While most of the island is home to private beaches and golf courses, Kiawah Beachwalker Park is a public beach with very few crowds.

What’s the best way to get around the city?

With its grid design and flat landscape, Charleston is a very walkable city. Pedicabs, which usually seat two, are also plentiful, and many hotels rent bikes. The city-operated DASH offers free rides throughout downtown aboard an old-fashioned trolley. Driving in Charleston is not recommended as parking is very limited and expensive. You’ll probably need to rent a car, however, if you’re going to explore areas outside the Historic District, such as the nearby plantations or beaches. For a view of the city from Charleston Harbor, Charleston Waterway Taxi provides harbor cruises. A 30-minute ferry ride also takes you from Charleston to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.

Why is Charleston so Expensive in 2023? 4 Major Reasons & Ways to Save

Why is Charleston so expensive these days? Ultimately, it is because it offers the most out of any city in South Carolina along with high-paying job opportunities and an excellent location, which has led to a hot housing market.

We took a deeper look into each of these reasons and tried to look into the details of how or why they make Charleston so expensive today.

We also determine ways to make it a bit more affordable so that you can enjoy this wonderful city. Some of these factors have alternatives that can make it a little less expensive, although some others may be out of your hands.

Either way, let’s take a look at why Charleston is so expensive and what are the exact reasons that drive its higher costs so that you are aware of them before you relocate there.

Table of Contents

Why is Charleston so Expensive? Background

Why-is-Charleston-so-Expensive-Downtown-Charleston

First, let’s investigate exactly how expensive Charleston actually is in 2023. Currently, the cost of living in Charleston is about 11% higher than the US average . However, South Carolina as a whole is pretty cheap and is actually about 12% cheaper than the US average.

That makes Charleston over 20% more expensive than the average city in South Carolina.

Now, let’s see the reasons why.

1. Best All-Around City in South Carolina

The first reason why Charleston is so expensive in 2023 is because it offers so many things to do for virtually every age range. It is truly a world-class city that features a strong community with unlimited amenities that attracts young professionals, families, and retirees.

There is a lively nightlife and entertainment scene that complements Charleston’s superb restaurant options.

It also offers an excellent quality of life that is unrivaled within South Carolina or even the South. Charleston has great warm weather with a variety of seasons that gives its residents some climate diversity.

It also has a strong reputation for education, as there are several universities located within the city.

Meanwhile, it offers a strong job market with good wages, which we will get into later.

2. Location, Location, Location

A major reason for Charleston’s initial popularity when it was founded in the 1600s was its prime spot directly on the Atlantic Ocean that was ideal for trading and fishing.

Today, its residents continue to enjoy the waterfront by indulging in leisure activities on the water like sailing and going to the beach.

Speaking of the beach, Charleston is located close to many of the best beaches in South Carolina (and even the nation).

Downtown Charleston is only 20 minutes from the shoreline and famous beaches like Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach.

Why-is-Charleston-so-Expensive-Folly-Beach

Properties on or near such beautiful beaches will always command a premium and Charleston is no exception.

Meanwhile, its strategic location in the southern part of the US makes it one of the most important regional hubs of the South as well. It is close to many major Southern cities like Savannah, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Jacksonville. A flight to New York is just two hours as well.

Therefore, living in Charleston allows you to be in a major city that is close to the beach and nearby to many metropolitan areas. That combination has made it an ideal location and thus, has elevated its demand.

3. Good Job Market and Salaries

Charleston has also been able to attract and retain many top companies in the region. Major employers in Charleston include Boeing, Bosch, and Mercedes-Benz. There is also the U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint Base Charleston that employs over 22,000 military personnel and the Medical University Of South Carolina (MUSC) that provides over 16,000 jobs as well.

All of these good job opportunities means that many of the top employers need to compete with one another to secure the best talents. Therefore, they need to offer higher wages.

The average salary in Charleston in 2023 is $62,000 according to Payscale , which makes it one of the top paying cities in South Carolina. In fact, Charleston has the 2nd highest income per capita in the state , only trailing Beaufort. It is more than 25% higher than the South Carolina average, too.

Thus, many people in the area want to move to Charleston to land one of these high paying jobs. Then, they actually use the money locally, which indirectly elevates the cost of goods in the area as well.

4. Competitive Housing Market

As a result of Charleston’s status as a great place to live along with its location and good job market, its housing market has rapidly appreciated in recent years. The fact that it also offers many beautiful and historic homes makes it even more desirable.

In fact, Charleston’s home prices are the primary reason why its cost of living is so high. Housing costs alone are an astounding 86% higher in Charleston compared to the rest of South Carolina. According to Zillow, the median home in Charleston costs about $430,000 these days and continues to rise.

How Can You Make Charleston More Affordable to Live?

Why-is-Charleston-so-Expensive-Charleston-Waterfront

Now that we have gone over why Charleston is so expensive, it is a good time to see if you can reduce these costs or if they are all fixed.

It’s clear that a top city that offers so many things to do like Charleston will inevitably be more expensive, so there probably not much you can do about normal costs like groceries or going out to restaurants.

But, housing in Charleston is where you may be able to save some money. Although it is true that the average house in the core of the city is now over $400,000, there are several homes and condos in the surrounding areas that are a bit cheaper.

For example, there are several condo complexes on James Island, which is only 5 miles away from downtown, that are selling units for less than $300,000.

There are also many homes in West Ashley, which is about 6 miles away, that can be found for $200,000 to $250,000.

Conversely, you can consider renting in Charleston instead of buying. Wallethub named Charleston as one of the top 50 cities to rent in instead of buy based on its rental market and its affordability.

Charleston’s home price to rent ratio is quite high, which makes it a better value to rent than to buy.

With the average cost to rent being around $1,700 , it can be much more economical to pay for rent than to take out a mortgage with payments that could be double that per month.

Another way to combat Charleston’s high costs is to earn more money. If you are able to find a high paying remote job that allows you to work-from-home, then your cost of living in Charleston may not be that bad.

It’s all possible in today’s day and age, as many more companies have become more flexible and allow workers to live virtually anywhere.

Summary – Why is Charleston so Expensive?

So, why is Charleston so expensive? In short, it is due to its ideal location on the beach combined with its popular downtown that attracts tourists and locals alike. In turn, that has led to more companies relocating to Charleston and, eventually, higher housing prices.
