Most travelers encounter few difficulties in  Sweden , finding it a place that welcomes visitors from other countries.

An easy country to travel in, Sweden has  well-functioning public transportation , a high level of safety and a population that for the most part speaks English very well. Still, there are certain things to be aware of that will help your trip go as smoothly as possible. Read on for things you should know before you travel, so that your Swedish experience will live up to expectations, and be one you’ll remember for all the right reasons.

Planning your trip to Sweden

Figure out where to lay your head.

If you want to get the best deals on accommodations in Sweden , you’ll need to book ahead, especially if you’re visiting at a busy time of year. Reliable hotel chains with hotels throughout Sweden include Scandic, Nordic Choice Hotels, Radisson and Best Western; there are also many independent hotels, some of them simpler properties with shared bathrooms, that may be worth considering if you want to save a bit of money.

A diverse range of hostels provide some of the most budget-friendly accommodations in Sweden, often in very appealing locations. Be aware that hostel guests are often expected to bring their own bed linens or pay an extra fee to rent them. Sleeping bags are not permitted.

Sorry we’re closed: avoiding disappointment

While many attractions, restaurants and shops in major cities generally keep fairly consistent hours throughout the year, some tourist businesses, including sightseeing cruises and certain attractions, are more seasonal , with opening hours tailored to the traditional Swedish summer holiday period from Midsummer to mid-August.

On the flip side, some restaurants have been known to close for up to six weeks in summer while staff go on vacation. Many museums are open daily during the summer high season but switch to a six-day opening schedule in the off season, typically with Monday as the closed day. If you have your heart set on a particular activity or attraction, do your homework and check opening dates and times before booking your trip.

Cash is not king

Sweden has been moving steadily away from cash for years, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated this already strong trend. While it’s helpful to carry some cash for emergencies, you can basically expect to rely on your credit or debit card for most transactions. Some places, including public transportation, no longer accept cash at all. If you have a contactless card, you can usually just tap it to pay, but if your card doesn’t have that option, you’ll generally need to be prepared to enter a PIN or show ID to complete your transaction.

You can ride the rails without spending a fortune

Train tickets in Sweden are available in both first and second class, with prices varying between different departures, so book well in advance for the best selection. The website of the Swedish national railway company , SJ, lists fares for both its own trains and routes operated by regional partners throughout the country.

If you’re planning to do a lot of rail travel, an Interrail or Eurail train pass is a good way to save money. You can purchase a pass online (Interrail if you live in Europe; Eurail if you live elsewhere), but be sure to order with enough time to receive the pass before your departure. For many trains, you’ll need to book a seat or sleeping compartment separately if you are using a rail pass.

Take to the road and avoid speeding tickets

Sweden’s roads are safe, well-maintained and, more often than not, scenic , but renting a car is expensive, as is fuel. As in any destination, booking well in advance and comparing various rental agencies is essential to get the best rate. If you don’t need to pick up your car at an airport, consider local agencies or even Circle K gas stations, which rent out cars and may have lower rates.

As you’re driving around Sweden, keep a watchful eye out for blue signs with a white symbol of a video camera, which warn of speed cameras ahead. If you are caught speeding, the police will eventually track you down and send you a bill.

Etiquette in Sweden

Small talk, what’s that.

A saying goes that Swedes are great friends, but poor strangers. Swedes are generally helpful and welcoming to tourists, but you’ll rarely find them engaging in small talk with people they don’t know. For visitors from more gregarious cultures, it can feel strange or uncomfortable to be waiting at a bus stop with a group of people who are all ignoring each other, or having someone avoid eye contact as they pass you on the street. Don’t take it personally. If you’re in Sweden long term, seeking out clubs and activities around a common interest can help break the ice. Once you do, you’ll find most Swedes to be warm, loyal friends.

Don’t be early, don’t be late

If you’re scheduled to meet with someone or invited to a private home, the time listed is when you’re expected to arrive. What might be considered fashionably late in other cultures is considered rude in Sweden. Likewise, arriving early may be awkward for your host and should be avoided. It’s also considered good form to bring a host gift along the lines of flowers, a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates. If you choose to bring wine, you’ll need to pop into the nearest Systembolaget outlet: Sweden’s state-run liquor stores are the only places where you can buy beverages with more than 3.5-percent alcohol content. Note that all Systembolaget stores are closed on Sundays.

Dress up to go out, down for work

In many countries, people dress up for work and more casually to go out. In Sweden, it’s often the opposite. You’ll see business people in meetings wearing jeans and a blazer, with people dressed to the nines to go out for drinks or dinner. In general, smart-casual dress without ostentation will do fine in most situations. You must be 18 or older to order alcoholic drinks at bars and restaurants, but at least 20 to shop at Systembolaget.

To tip or not to tip: it’s okay either way

The custom of tipping is much less established in Sweden than in many other countries, so for the most part you can expect to pay pretty much whatever is on the bill. If you’re eating out, it’s common to round up to the nearest big number to show your server some appreciation; if you choose not to tip, you’re unlikely to offend. For taxi fares it’s courteous to add a few kronor to round up; if you’re traveling with luggage a bit extra is appreciated, though not expected. It’s not necessary to tip for housekeeping and other services at hotels.

Take a number: how to queue in Sweden

Whether you’re waiting at the bank, a ticket office or the supermarket deli counter, the first thing you should do is look around for a ticket machine. The majority of queues in Sweden operate on a number system, so take a ticket and find somewhere to wait where you can see the display that indicates when your number is up and which counter you should go to. Sometimes there’s more than one number sequence in play for different types of services, so if you see multiple options on the ticket machine and can’t figure out which one applies to you, it’s best to ask someone for assistance before you waste time waiting in the wrong queue.

Health and safety in Sweden

Stay safe in the urban jungle and the wild outdoors.

Sweden is a very safe country, but as in any destination you should keep a watchful eye on your belongings, as pickpocketing does occur. Make sure to store valuables in your hotel safe, if there is one, or keep them locked in your luggage while you’re out and about. If you’re staying in hostels, bring a padlock so you can store things safely in a locker. Be aware of your surroundings and try to stick to well-lit areas after dark. The chances of something bad happening are small, but it’s always best not to tempt fate.

If you’re heading into nature, make sure you’re adequately prepared – Sweden’s wild landscapes are gorgeous , but if something goes wrong, you may be a long way from help. Unless you’ve got wilderness experience, a guided tour is your best option for outdoor activities in remote areas.

Help, I need a doctor!

If you get sick or injured while in Sweden, never fear. The country’s healthcare system is top-notch, but figuring out how to access it as a visitor can be confusing. If you have a health insurance card from another European Economic Area (EEA) country, you’re eligible to receive care on the same terms as Swedes. If you’re from anywhere else, you’ll typically need to pay the full cost, so it’s important to have a decent travel insurance policy just in case.

If you need health care while in Sweden and are unsure of what to do, dial the national hotline 1177 for assistance. In case of an emergency requiring immediate attention, call 112.

Watch out! Two-wheeled hazards are everywhere

Sweden is a pedestrian-friendly country, but you’ll need to keep a sharp eye out for two-wheeled transport. Don’t jaywalk, and never step into a dedicated bike lane without first looking in both directions; if you do, you’re risking life and limb, since cars and cyclists won’t be prepared to stop. Watch your feet as well – in recent years, electric scooters have proliferated in cities and are often left haphazardly in places where they pose an obstacle to pedestrians.

Discover Sweden by train – scenic views and climate-friendly travel

Travel by train in Sweden to explore the country in all its vastness – while enjoying breathtaking views from the comfort of your seat. Whether you dream of hiking under the Midnight Sun in Swedish Lapland, or fancy exploring Sweden’s smaller cities as part of a round trip, climb aboard and discover Sweden by rail.

As in Europe, train travel is enjoying a revival in Sweden, and Swedish train operators are meeting the growing interest in sustainable travel by offering a variety of rail holidays and routes. From business commuters riding the high-speed trains between Sweden’s major cities to families boarding the seven-hour Snälltåget sleeper to Åre , more and more Swedes are choosing to travel by train in Sweden. On a route like the Stockholm-Gothenburg express, rail travel may even be more time-efficient than driving or flying and is kinder to the environment, as well as stress-free. No need to keep your eye on the road or queue at airport check-ins – just sit back and take in the views while your train weaves its way through Sweden’s beautiful scenery.

Snälltåget runs from Germany to Sweden. In Sweden, the train company operates several routes, including Malmö, Stockholm and Åre.

How to do Sweden by rail

First of all, you need to get here. The best part? It’s never been easier to take the train to Sweden: Hop on the morning Eurostar in London, change in Brussels and take one of the sleepers that SJ and Snälltåget run from Hamburg – and Berlin during the summer months.  You’ll wake up in Stockholm 18 hours later, refreshed and ready to explore the city or embark on a new rail adventure in Sweden.

Sweden’s rail network

Sweden’s rail network covers swathes of the country, all served by different rail companies: Sweden’s national rail company SJ , Snälltåget , Vy and Inlandsbanan operate nationally and internationally. MTRX  and  FlixTrain operate between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Buy your tickets on each train operator's website or in the station before travelling – keep in mind that tickets cannot be purchased on board. Even if your route is operated by another train company, it’s worth checking the SJ site for an overview of rail routes and destinations.

Trains in Sweden range from SJ’s tilting Express trains (X2000 and X3000) and overnight sleeper trains – courtesy of SJ, Snälltåget and Vy – to rural railway lines like Inlandsbanan. Although wheelchair places can be booked on almost all SJ trains, accessible travel can vary according to train company, it’s best to check ahead.

Ticket discounts and rail passes in Sweden

Tickets are discounted for those under 26 and over 65, with children under 15 often travelling free, depending on the rail company and trip. To get the best prices, be sure to book in advance.

If you want the freedom to hop on and off trains and explore more of the country, opt for a Eurail or Interrail pass – exclusively for international travellers. SJ also sells a rail pass during the summer season – travel to Oslo and Copenhagen is included too – to both Swedish and international travellers.

FAQ travel by train

It’s super easy to buy train tickets between Kastrup/Copenhagen Airport and Malmö/Sweden at the station or in the Skånetrafiken app. Please note you cannot buy a ticket on the train. To travel onwards to Stockholm, book your ticket at SJ:s website .

The rules for bringing your pet on the train may vary between train operators; please check with the train company you are travelling with. Sweden’s national rail company, SJ, welcomes pets on board. Read more about what applies to pets on SJ's different trains and how to reserve a "pets allowed" couchette on SJ:s website .

The rules for bringing a bike on the train may vary between train operators. On SJ trains, bicycles must be disassembled or folded and stored in a bicycle bag before embarking. Read more about bicycles and other special luggage rules on SJ:s website .

Travelling by train is one of the most sustainable ways to travel.

Discover Sweden at your own pace

Two of Sweden’s most popular train routes are the Malmö-Stockholm and Stockholm-Gothenburg lines. Although most Swedes travelling for a city break in Gothenburg will take an express train, it’s well worth exploring the stops en route on a slower train. First though, be sure you have a valid train pass or purchase separate tickets if you want to hop on and off.

Gems on the Stockholm-Gothenburg route

An hour outside Stockholm, alight at Västerås in Västmanland county , a cultural and nature hotspot on the banks of Lake Mälaren. Go wild swimming or drop by Västerås’s fine art museum before getting back on the train. Other route highlights are Örebro – dating back to medieval times, with a wonderful castle – and Kumla, an idyllic little town. Swedish fika lovers will want to stop off at White-Guide listed Alingsås – fondly referred to as the “fika capital of Sweden” – just one stop before Gothenburg. If you’re an experienced hiker and feeling up to it, consider walking some of the 71-kilometre-long Alingsås-Gothenburg hike on Sweden’s famous Gotaleden Trail .

Highlights on the Stockholm-Malmö route

The Stockholm-Malmö train route also boasts a few gems on the way, such as Norrköping in Östergötland, known for its beautifully preserved 19th century industrial heritage buildings. Next, alight in Linköping – visit Linköping’s open-air museum and step back in time to experience Swedish country life a hundred years ago.

Want to do something more active? Get off in Alvesta, Småland and rent a bicycle – do part of the Åsnen Loop (Åsnen Runt), a 140-kilometre cycling trail that goes through Åsnen National Park and around Lake Åsnen.

Beyond the Arctic Circle – Sweden’s epic train journeys

To experience Sweden’s nature at its most impressive and remote, journey north and take the train beyond the Arctic Circle. Two classic train routes serving these far-flung parts include the year-round Stockholm-Luleå-Narvik sleeper train – fondly dubbed the Arctic Circle train – and the Inlandsbanan line, a rural railway that traverses through Sweden’s inland. Covering the distance from Mora in middle Sweden to Gällivare in Swedish Lapland , Inlandsbanan joins the historic Iron Ore line (Malmbanan) that continues to Kiruna and Abisko.

The Arctic Circle sleeper – Stockholm-Luleå-Narvik

Vy currently runs the Arctic Circle sleeper train that goes via Umeå and Luleå where it changes to the Iron Ore line (Malmbanan), continuing the rest of the journey to Narvik in Norway. Look forward to a 19-hour rail trip that takes you through some of Sweden’s most spectacular and unforgettable nature. Fall asleep in Stockholm and wake up to breathtaking vistas outside Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. Glide past Sweden’s majestic Lake Torneträsk and gaze in wonder at Abisko National Park, one of Sweden’s most stunning national parks. By now, you’re probably glued to the window in awe, so don’t forget to get off at Abisko Turiststation, especially if you’re visiting during the Northern Lights season (early September to late March). Famous for being one of the best places in the world to catch the Northern Lights, Abisko is an equally stunning destination for hiking or cycling holidays under the Midnight Sun (end of May to mid July).

Inlandsbanan – Sweden’s backcountry rail route in summer

Inlandsbanan offers a unique way to discover Sweden’s backcountry – a 1,200-kilometre long route past stunning nature and picturesque towns, all great starting points for hiking and kayaking holidays. Buy Inlandbanan’s 14-day pass if you don’t already have a Eurail or Interrail pass, and you’ll be free to make your own itinerary. Inlandsbanan also offers package rail holidays that include overnight hotel stays and sightseeing stopovers.

Keep an eye out for Inlandbanan’s once-a-year heritage railway tour on the Wilderness Train (Vildmarkståget), a seven-day round trip from Stockholm to Örnsköldsvik via Kiruna, Gällivare and Narvik, Norway. Travel in vintage carriages from the 1940s-1960s, with meals served in a white-tablecloth dining carriage.

Short and scenic – day trips by train

Looking for shorter day trips that are easy to reach from the Gothenburg region? Two rail routes that rank highly on Swedes’ must-do train trips are the Huskvarna-Jönköping-Bankeryd route in Småland and the Kinnekullebanan train line between Mariestad and Lidköping.

Lakeside views on the Huskvarna-Jönköping-Bankeryd route

One of Sweden’s most scenic – and much loved – rail routes is the Huskvarna-Jönköping-Bankeryd route in Småland. Running on the local Jönköpingsbanan railway line, it’s only 17 minutes long, but packs in some great scenery. Hugging the shores of Lake Vättern, this delightful train ride offers uninterrupted, peaceful views of the water, so don’t miss it if you’re in Jönköping – one of Sweden’s hidden gems and well worth a visit in itself. Coming from Gothenburg ? Take a two-hour train to Huskvarna to join this charming route.

The Kinnekullebanan line – scenic hikes and train station nostalgia

Another popular train excursion is the one-hour Mariestad-Lidköping route via Kinnekulle on the local Kinnekulletåget train line, past Lake Vänern and several picturesque 19th century Swedish train stations. You’ll definitely want to get off and explore the many cultural sights or hiking trails on the way – Kinnekulle Trail (Kinnekulleleden) and the Pilgrim’s Trail (Pilgrimsleden) go through here – so it really makes sense to buy a three-day pass .

Whichever rail trips you decide to embark on, travelling by train in Sweden is not only efficient and relaxing – it’s a great way to see more of the country and experience it at your own pace.

How to apply for a work permit

The main rule is that you should apply for and have been granted a work permit before entering Sweden. When applying online you are given clear instructions about how to fill in your application and what you should send with the application. This makes it easier for you to apply correctly and increases your chances of a quick decision.

Information for holders of work permits who wish to apply for an extension or a permanent residence permit

When you apply for an extension of your work permit, the Migration Agency checks that the conditions for a work permit have been met during the periods of validity of each of your previous work permit periods. For applications to be complete, you need to submit documents that show that salary and insurance requirements have been met for each month you have held a work permit in Sweden.

Read more about extending your work permit

Sometimes other rules apply

Special rules regarding work permit applications exist for certain occupations and countries. Other rules also apply to those who have been asylum seekers and are now applying for a work permit, or to persons visiting an employer in Sweden.

Application for work permit for certain occupations and countries

Application for work permit for persons who have been asylum seekers

Application to extend your work permit

Employment contract

To obtain a work permit, you must have an employment in Sweden. You must have an employment contract that you must enclose with your application. Your employer must have advertised the job in Sweden and the EU/EEA and Switzerland for at least ten days before the employment contract was entered into.

Read more about how your employer must have advertised your new job

The employer initiates the application

Your employer in Sweden initiates the work permit application by providing information about the employment. Your employer needs information about your name, date of birth, citizenship, education and your email address.

It is important that you have access to the email address you give your employer until you have received a decision regarding your application. The Swedish Migration Agency will use this email address to communicate with you throughout the application period.

Information to the employer

You receive an email

When your employer has provided information about the employment you will receive an email with information about how to apply for a work permit.

In the application you provide information about yourself. You should also check that the information about your employment terms in the provided information about the employment corresponds with what you and your employer have agreed on.

If your family is coming with you to Sweden you apply for permits for them at the same time. You are subject to a maintenance requirement if your family is coming with you to Sweden.

Read more about the maintenance requirement for employees

Attach documents

The following documents are to be scanned or photographed and sent with your application

  • your employment contract
  • copies of the pages in your passport which show your personal information, photograph, signature, passport number, passport issuing country, the passport's period of validity, bar code on the identification page and whether you have permission to live in countries other than your country of origin. It is important that the passport is signed.
  • a power of attorney in the event you are representing the applicant.

If your passport is about to expire, you should extend it because you are not able to get a permit for longer than your passport is valid.

If you are applying for an extension of work permit, you will need to attach additional documents to your application.

Employment as a personal assistant

If you are applying for a work permit as a personal assistant you must attach a copy of the decision issued by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) regarding assistance benefits. This decision shows that you have somebody that you will be working with and that this person is entitled to an assistance benefit.

What is a power of attorney?

A power of attorney can be a signed letter in which the person applying for a permit allows another person to represent them. A power of attorney can, for example, give someone the right to apply, be informed of the reasons for a decision, or lodge an appeal for someone else. The power of attorney must be signed by the person who gives their power of attorney to another person, and must be presented in the original if required by the Swedish Migration Agency.

In order to give another person power of attorney, you will need to send a letter to the Swedish Migration Agency stating

  • that it is a power of attorney
  • the name, date of birth and address of the person giving someone else the power of attorney
  • what the person who has the power of attorney has to do
  • the name, personal identity number and address of the person who is given the power of attorney
  • the signature of the person giving someone else the power of attorney
  • the date and place where the power of attorney is signed.

If your family will accompany you and you are applying for them at the same time, you will also be required to submit the following:

  • copies of the pages in their passports which show their personal information, photograph, signature, passport number, passport issuing country, the period of the passport's validity, bar code on the identification page and whether they have permission to live in countries other than their country of origin.
  • copies of marriage certificates or the equivalent (applies to married couples or registered partners)
  • documents showing that you have lived together in your country of origin (applies to cohabiting partners)
  • birth certificates for children
  • consent from the other custodial parent, if they are not also coming to Sweden, stating that the child is allowed to move to Sweden
  • documents showing that children above the age of 21 are financially dependent on their parents
  • adoption documents if the child was adopted
  • power of attorney if you are representing all members of the family who are over 18 years and who are co-applicants.

The above-mentioned documents should be translated into Swedish or English by an authorized translator. You should always submit both a copy of the original document a copy of the translation.

A statement of consent is a signed letter from the parent who has custody but will not be accompanying the child to Sweden, in which he or she agrees that your child should be granted a residence permit to settle in Sweden. The statement of consent should contain

  • the name, date of birth and address of the parent who consents
  • the name and date of birth of the child to which the statement of consent relates
  • a statement that the parent agrees that the child should be granted a residence permit to settle in Sweden
  • the signature of the parent consenting, along with his or her name in printed letters.

Pay and submit your application

In most cases you must pay a fee. The Swedish Migration Agency receives your application when it has been paid for and submitted by you who are applying for a permit. You can pay using Visa or Mastercard. When the fee is paid you submit your application. You and your employer will receive an email confirming that your application has been submitted. The Migration Agency will contact you if it needs more information.

Application fees for work permits

The Migration Agency processes the application

For the Swedish Migration Agency to make a decision about your application, all the details need to be filled in and all necessary documents attached. This means that the processing time will be shorter if all the necessary information is included from the start than if information is added afterwards. Note that the Migration Agency may in some cases need to further examine your application even if you have included all the required information and documents.

Waiting times for work permits

If you change your mind and no longer want to apply

If you want to withdraw your application, you must say so in a written letter to the Swedish Migration Agency. In the letter, you must state your name, date of birth, personal identity number (if you have one) and your case number. Also state your telephone number and address so that the Swedish Migration Agency can reach you if we have any questions. You must sign the letter. If you have given a power of attorney to someone, that person can withdraw the application on your behalf.

Show your passport

The Swedish Migration Agency must check your passport before a decision can be made. You may therefore need to show your passport at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general if you are outside Sweden, or one of the Migration Agency's service centres if you are in Sweden.

Find out which embassy or consulate-general you should contact on the page Embassies responsible for migration matters

In some cases, you will not be required to show your passport, for example, if we have already checked your passport during a previous visit.

If you need to show your passport, we will contact you with information on how and when to do so.

If you need an entry visa or residence permit card to travel to Sweden, you will in most cases have your fingerprints taken and be photographed when you show your passport at an embassy or consulate-general.

If your family also applies for a residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency must check their passports as well. The requirement to show your passport in person does not apply to children under the age of five, it is sufficient that the parent brings the child's passport to the visit. However, if the child needs a residence permit card, they must come along to be photographed for it.

Information needed for residence permit card

If you are granted a permit for more than three months you will receive a residence permit card. The card proves that you have permission to reside in Sweden and contains information such as your fingerprints and photograph.

If you need an entry visa for travel to Sweden you should therefore visit the Swedish embassy or consulate-general as soon as possible to be photographed and have your fingerprints taken, if you did not do this in connection with showing your passport. You need to do this even if you have previously had a residence permit card, as the information is not saved. If your family is also applying for permits, the family members also need to be photographed and have their fingerprints taken at the embassy or consulate-general. Always contact the embassy or consulate-general prior to your visit.

If you do not need an entry visa for travel to Sweden you can submit information for the residence permit card at the Migration Agency after arriving in Sweden. However, you must request and have your work permit issued before you travel to Sweden.

Receiving the decision

You will receive an email confirming that a decision has been made. You are given the actual decision by the embassy or consulate-general that you have specified in your application. Your employer will also receive a notification about the decision by mail.

You need to bring your passport when collecting your decision. If you have been granted a work permit you will receive the residence permit card within four weeks of being photographed and fingerprinted at the embassy or consulate-general.

The residence permit card will be produced at the time the decision is made, but no earlier than three months before the residence permit becomes valid.

We cannot speed up the production or delivery of the card.

Book an appointment at the Migration Agency to be fingerprinted and photographed if you can travel without a residence permit card

8 Fun Things To Do in JB on a Day Trip

From a Singaporean who goes to JB every other weekend.

I love going to Johor Bahru (JB). I mean, who doesn’t? It’s affordable, it’s good, and you can do almost everything and anything you want for less compared to Singapore.

As someone who frequently crosses the border for food, entertainment, shopping and massages, I feel the need to share my top 8 most fun things to do in JB on a day trip with other Singaporeans (hence this post).

Getting into JB

If you drive: Check Motorist.sg for live traffic camera feed at Woodlands Checkpoint before entering.

If you’re taking public transport: The jam can be a turn-off, especially on weekends. Here are some hacks I’ve discovered over my many years of crossing the border.

  • Option 1: Consider walking across the border (yes, walking) when the jam gets really bad. I’ve done it before and it took me only about 30 minutes.
  • Option 2: Pay someone off (unofficially) to take you across the border.

Usually, public buses will take the bus lane, so it’s not that bad of a jam compared to driving. But I know, sometimes upon exiting Singapore immigration, you’ll get a shock at how loooong the queue is for the SBS bus into JB.

Now, don’t queue. Instead, walk over to the private bus bay. You may notice several blue buses called “Bas Pekerja”, which essentially means “employee” or “worker” bus. They ferry Malaysian workers back and forth daily. Simply get on it, and ask the driver if they’re okay with you hitching a ride to Malaysia Customs (usually they’re agreeable). Upon getting down, pay around 2 to 3RM directly to the driver.

8 Fun Things To Do in JB on a Day Trip (2024)

#1 brunch at kopilicious .

jb travel sweden

After makan-ing (eating) at many restaurants and coffee shops in Malaysia, my favourite go-to for breakfast or brunch is Kopilicious, which has two branches in JB.

The Taman Sentosa branch is an eight minute drive from the customs, while the Taman Molek branch is 16 minutes away.

What you should eat and drink: Their signature cold coffee (3.50RM) and mee siam rendang (12.50RM).

Now, I’m not exactly a food writer so I’ll keep it short — Freaking. Delicious. And I’m not even a spice eater. The mee siam rendang had a spicy yet savoury kick that left me wanting more after each bite. Heck, I was even thinking about it for weeks after my trip.

If you have yet to try Kopilicious, try it on your next trip. I promise it’s worth it.

#2 D.A Little Farms/Shi-ba Cafe

Head over to Mount Austin’s Shiba Cafe — It’s time to play with some furbabies!

Price-wise, you’ll pay around 20RM~ for an hour with the doggos and it comes with one drink. It is open from 10am to 8pm daily, with 3pm to 4pm being the dogs’ break.

jb travel sweden

We had fun playing with all types of dogs, including huskies, shiba inus, toy poodles and more. Reservations in advance are required, and you can WhatsApp them at +60 11-1193-9795.

Climb one level upstairs, and you’ll come face to face with an exotic animal cafe called D.A Little Farms .

jb travel sweden

There are ducks, cats, alpacas, birds, fennec foxes and more, perfect for animal lovers of all ages.

Here are the pricing details for both cafes:

Shiba Cafe Weekdays: Adults: RM 32 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

Weekends: Adults: RM 38 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

D.A Little Farm Weekdays: Adults: RM 48 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

Weekends: Adults: RM 58 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

#3 Treat yourself to a mani-pedi

jb travel sweden

For people who aren’t that interested in dog cafes, you can also do your nails at Sasa Nails House , which is within walking distance of the dog cafe.

I remember paying roughly around S$60~ for a french gel manicure and pedicure — and as a ‘chor lor’ (rough) person, I was surprised that my nails lasted for months without chipping off.

#4 Sing your heart out at a KTV

jb travel sweden

If you have three hours to spare, consider going for a karaoke sesh at SING V KTV at super affordable prices. This karaoke branch can go as low as 0.50RM for three hours per person on a weekday afternoon. However, I think we paid around S$10~ for three hours per person with unlimited drinks. Still very affordable.

#5 Shopping, shopping, shopping

jb travel sweden

There’s also a really great, big mall in the Austin area that’s around a 10 minute drive away called AEON Tebrau that is linked to Toppen Mall and IKEA — you might want to spend another full day here if you choose to stay the night.

There’s a movie theatre, tons of food options, clothing stores, a JUSCO supermarket and more. Anything you want, AEON Tebrau has it.

#6 Play to your heart’s content at Danga Bay

jb travel sweden

If you like theme parks, this one’s for you.

Okay, truth be told, the thrill is not from the rides — it’s the safety of those rides. You might fall off and die, who knows. But that’s what makes it exciting. Just kidding. I’ve been there countless times, rode on all their cute, rickety rides and have had to any incidents… Yet.

But for real though, you should check it out. Located around a 20 minute drive from Mount Austin, this is where you’ll want to go after all the shops and malls have closed for the night.

Once the sun sets, you’ll see a bunch of local families hanging out at Danga Bay with their kids, taking rides, buying LED balloons, riding on rented PMDs/bicycles/carriages, and more. Think of it as a mini Pasar Malam (night market) and a theme park in one — that closes no earlier than 12am.

I would not recommend eating dinner there though, as the restaurants there are not cheap — it’s mostly a bunch of Chinese restaurants selling seafood by weight. But as for snacks inside the park itself (as you can see those tents behind us in the pic above), I would say go for it. There are donuts, drinks, and other food sold by individual vendors at very reasonable prices.

The park is free to enter, but you’ll have to pay for rides. Each ride costs about 2RM to 10RM, which we’re okay to pay for hours of fun.

We played bumper cars, a roller coaster in the dark, the Viking ship, as well as a cycling ride suspended in the air called Galactic Ring which looks something like this:

jb travel sweden

I found this ride to be the most “dangerous” as you are on a high track above the ground and honestly, it’s an old theme park so you can see everything from that height, including what looks like a huge metal junkyard with rusty pipes and wires sticking out from the ground directly below one part of the tracks. I would hate to imagine if someone accidentally fell out of the ride during that segment.

Also, hold onto your phone. Tightly. Very tightly.

#7 Get a massage

How can we ever forget about getting a massage in JB?

After playing up a storm, head over to Bangkok Family Spa at Permas Jaya for a well-deserved message.

Tons of Singaporeans enjoy going to Bangkok Spa (nearer to customs), but in my opinion, after having tried both spas multiple times, I would say that Bangkok Family Spa is better.

It’s the same price and also less crowded than Bangkok Spa, and there’s free transport to and fro customs/KSL area. It’s clean, quiet (no clock ticking sounds, thank goodness) and sometimes you may even get an individual room (where it’s a door instead of curtains) if you opt for a solo aromatherapy massage.

The spa is located around a 15 minute drive from Danga Bay.

jb travel sweden

At only around S$20 for an hour of Traditional Thai Massage, I would say that massages are a MUST DO in JB.

I personally always go for two hours of their Aromatherapy Massage, because I think oil hits better.

jb travel sweden

Click here for their full service menu and price list .

You can message them on WhatsApp at +60 11-1081-5555 to make reservations.

#8 Grab supper

After you’ve gotten all the knots out of your body, step outside of the spa and you’ll immediately see a lok lok truck next door blasting Chinese EDM music. I don’t know the name of it, or what time it opens and closes. Sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not, depending on the owner’s mood, I guess. But 80% of the time I go to the spa, that lok lok truck is open.

Grab some food, drinks, chill and when you’re done, get the spa’s transport to send you to customs for free.

Hotel recommendations

If it’s too late and you choose to stay, here’s a hotel I’d totally recommend:  Midori Concept at Austin Heights .

jb travel sweden

Having stayed there multiple times, I can assure you that this hotel is clean, beds are comfortable and their high-powered shower is all you need for a good night’s rest.

jb travel sweden

The cost? Only around S$40 per night.

Book your room at Midori Concept Hotel at Booking.com or Trip.com .
