Jill Scott set for return to Philly in 2023 as part of anniversary tour for debut album
The neo-soul singer's 2020 tour celebrating 'who is jill scott words and sounds vol. 1' was cut short due to covid-19; she will also host a fundraiser at the arden during her stay.
After a national tour commemorating the 20th anniversary of Jill Scott's debut studio album was cut short due to COVID-19, the North Philadelphia native is set to hit the road again in 2023, with two back-to-back performances in her hometown.
Scott, whose debut album "Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1," put the neo-soul singer on the map, will perform at The Met on March 16 and March 18 . The tour kicks off on Feb. 28 in Augusta, Georgia and wraps up in Los Angeles on June 22.

Scott will perform the album front to back, including hits like "Gettin' In The Way" and "A Long Walk." It's unclear if the R&B singer will perform hits from her later albums, though longtime fans can reminisce with Scott as she performs some of her earliest work.
"My band and I were so excited three years ago, but that damn COVID shut us down," Scott said in a release. "Now, we outside! Come see me. Come feel again. Relive your favorite moments. Ya'll ready to settle down and get with this?! It's a lot of love here."
Along with the pair of concerts, Scott will head over to The Arden Theater in Old City during her stay for a fundraiser supporting the Blues Babe Foundation , her nonprofit that offers scholarships, academic enrichment and mentoring programs to underserved kids in Philly and Camden. The organization holds a day camp in North Philly each summer.

Scott was discovered by Questlove in the late 1990s, and was asked to join The Roots in studio as they were recording 1999's "Things Fall Apart." The R&B singer co-wrote one of the band's most popular songs, "You Got Me," though her vocals were replaced with Erykah Badu's before release, as Scott was relatively unknown outside of Philly at the time.
Still, Scott performed the song with The Roots while the hip-hop collective toured the album, and later collaborated with other artists including Common and Will Smith before signing to Hidden Beach Recordings in 2000. She released "Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1" on July 18, 2000.
The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip Hop albums chart following its release, and Scott was subsequently nominated for three Grammy Awards the following year — Best New Artist, Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Though she didn't win those awards, her decades-long career includes three Grammy wins and 14 nominations.
After two decades, Scott's debut still resonates with listeners across the world. In 2019, Pitchfork reviewed the album and gave it a 7.7 out of 10 , lauding the album as a project that "brought love and sex to the everywoman" in an era before social media. On the album's 20th anniversary, Essence editor Brooklyn White wrote about "Who Is Jill Scott?" for a Gen Z audience, calling the singer a "beacon of tenderness."
Tickets to the anniversary shows go on sale Friday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. Fans can access the sale through Ticketmaster or Scott's official website.

Jill Scott Announces Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol. 1 23rd Anniversary Tour
LINK TO APPROVED IMAGES & ASSETS
What started as the 20th-anniversary tour of Jill Scott’s chart-topping, genre-defining album, Who Is Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol I in 2020 ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But good news prevails: in 2023, the tour will resume, electrifying auditoriums, theaters, and music halls throughout the nation in celebration of a moment and movement that continues to enthrall music lovers of all ages and backgrounds. Scott will play the iconic album front to back, with hits from her iconic debut album, such as “Gettin’ in the Way,” “A Long Walk” and other musical stories. The tour, produced by Live Nation Urban, will play in over 20 markets across the country, with special multi-show residencies in Washington, D.C. at the MGM National Harbor on Mother’s Day weekend and Scott’s hometown of Philadelphia at The MET Philadelphia, marking the first time the North Philadelphia native will play at the storied North Philadelphia venue. The Philadelphia stop also includes a fundraiser at the Arden Theatre in support of her non-profit, the Blues Babe Foundation .
“My band and I were so excited three years ago, but that damn COVID shut us down,” said Scott. “Now, we outside! Come see me. Come feel again. Relive your favorite moments. Ya’ll ready to settle down and get with this?!? It’s a lot of love here.”
Though Scott had to pause performances during the pandemic, she celebrated the milestone virtually and continued building her brand as a multimedia entrepreneur, launching “ Jill Scott Presents: J.ill the Podcast” in November 2020 alongside co-hosts Laiya St.Clair and Aja Graydon-Dantzler . The universally-loved podcast currently has 80 episodes and continues to grow in popularity and influence. Scott also participated in the first woman vs. woman Verzuz battle in May 2020, starred in Lifetime’s Highway to Heaven and BET+’s The First Wives Club , and in September 2021, she became the face of Nationwide, bringing a fresh take on a familiar campaign and putting her soulful spin on the iconic jingle.
Scott released her much-anticipated debut record, Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1 in July 2000, which became a double platinum album that earned Scott several Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist (2001), Best R&B Album (2001), and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for three years in a row (2001-2003). The album also cracked Billboard top 10 for R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (2001).

Jill Scott will celebrate the 23rd anniversary of her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 , with a headlining tour.
The 20-date tour, powered by Live Nation Urban, kicks off Feb. 28, 2023, at Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Georgia.
From there, Scott will play in various U.S. cities, including Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Memphis, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.
Scott will spend two nights in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
The tour concludes June 22, 2023, at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. Scott announced her show at Hollywood Bowl last month.
Tickets go on sale this Friday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. local time on missjillscott.com .
Scott was initially scheduled to launch her tour in 2020 to celebrate her album’s 20th anniversary. However, it was postponed due to the pandemic.
Fans can expect the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter to perform her beloved debut in full.
“I’m going to be true to the album set list. I’ll do every song in the order of the album. My audience should bring their cd covers. Some may know the list by heart,” Scott told Billboard in 2019.
“I will create musical arrangements for the songs purposes with new energy but keep the integrity of the original songs they love. Expect theatre. Expect incredible musicianship. Expect love.”
Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 was released July 18, 2000, on Hidden Beach Records.
The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 17 on the Billboard 200 charts.
Who Is Jill Scott? included the popular “Gettin’ In the Way,” “A Long Walk” and “The Way.”
“A Long Walk” peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart and spent seven weeks in the top spot.
On the same chart, “The Way” peaked at No. 2, “Gettin’ In the Way” at No. 3 and “He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat)” at No. 10
Of the album’s singles, two appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “A Long Walk” (peaked at No. 43) and “The Way” (peaked at No. 60).
At the 43rd Grammy Awards, Scott earned three nominations: Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (“Gettin’ In the Way”) and Best R&B Album ( Who Is Jill Scott? Words And Sounds Vol. 1 ).
She additionally picked up a nod at the 44th Grammy Awards for “A Long Walk” and the 45th Grammy Awards for “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) (Movements I, II, III).” Both nominations were for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
The live rendition of “He Loves Me” appeared on Scott’s 2001 live album, Experience: Jill Scott 826+ .
It’s been seven years since Scott released her last album, Woman , on her imprint Blues Babe Records in partnership with Atlantic Records.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 62,000 equivalent units sold in the first week.
At the time, Scott was the first female R&B singer to top the Billboard 200 in a year and a half, following Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled album .
Woman included the Adult R&B Airplay top 10 hits “Can’t Wait” (No. 3), “Fool’s Gold” (No. 3) and “ Back Together ” (No. 10). The first two songs were co-written by SiR .
While this is the longest we’ve had to wait for a Jill Scott album, she has kept busy with collaborations.
Since then, Scott has collaborated with artists such as Daley (“ Until The Pain Is Gone “), SiR (“ Still Blue “), Alicia Keys (“ Jill Scott “), PJ Morton (“ Still Believe “) and Theo Croker (“ To Be We “), among others.
And if she wasn’t in a recording booth – including a podcast – she was on a TV or movie set. Some of her recent roles include Lady Eve in Black Lightning , Angela Stewart in Highway to Heaven and Hazel Rachelle in First Wives Club.
