A Few Words About Kenny
With his illustrious career that includes hallmark stints with Miles Davis, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, as well as a heralded career as a solo artist that began more than 30 years ago, Kenny Garrett is easily recognized as one of modern jazz’s brightest and most influential living masters. And with the marvelous Sounds From The Ancestors, the GRAMMY® Award-winning Garrett shows no signs of resting on his laurels.
Kenny Garrett ’s latest release, Sounds From The Ancestors , is a multi-faceted album. The music, however, doesn’t lodge inside the tight confines of the jazz idiom, which is not surprising considering the alto saxophonist and composer acknowledges the likes of Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye as significant touchstones. Similar to how Miles Davis’ seminal LP, On the Corner, subverted its main guiding lights – James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone – then crafted its own unique, polyrhythmic, groove-laden, improv-heavy universe, Sounds From The Ancestors occupies its own space with intellectual clarity, sonic ingenuity and emotional heft.
“The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up – sounds that lift your spirit from people like John Coltrane, ‘A Love Supreme’; Aretha Franklin, ‘Amazing Grace’; Marvin Gaye, ‘What’s Going On’; and the spiritual side of the church,” Garrett explains. “When I started to think about them, I realized it was the spirit from my ancestors.” Indeed, Sounds From The Ancestors reflects the rich jazz, R&B, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit. More important though, it also reverberates with a modern cosmopolitan vibrancy – notably the inclusion of music coming out of France, Cuba, Nigeria and Guadeloupe.

Kenny Garrett and Sounds From The Ancestors: Tiny Desk Concert

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett has been a significant player in jazz for more than 30 years. He's played with the best: Miles Davis, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and more. And with such a fabled past, he is still pushing the boundaries of modern jazz. His most recent album, Sounds from the Ancestors , was one of NPR Music's best albums of 2021 .
"I believe that music does heal people," Garrett said in a recent interview . "That's the reason that I play this music, because I know it heals me." You can hear that spiritual belief along with gospel elements of the Black American church on the first song of this Tiny Desk performance, "When the Days Were Different." On "Hargrove" Garrett pays homage to both John Coltrane 's A Love Supreme and trumpeter Roy Hargrove , as the song's hard-bop infused R&B groove builds momentum right up until the end.
The set finishes strong with Ronald Bruner Jr. on drums driving an expressive display of polyrhythmic virtuosity on Garrett's "For Art's Sake," a stunning tribute to drummers Art Blakey and Tony Allen that embraces both modern jazz and Afrobeat influences.
Garrett was in town to receive the National Endowment for the Arts' highest honor in jazz: the 2023 NEA Jazz Masters award. This Tiny Desk plus other events marked the festive occasion that culminated with an exciting tribute concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Coming up as a teen through the Duke Ellington Orchestra and serving a memorable five-year stint with the iconic Miles Davis, saxophone virtuoso and 2023 NEA Jazz Master Kenny Garrett is “one of the most admired alto saxophonists in jazz after Charlie Parker” ( The New York Times) . He returns to SFJAZZ with his latest ensemble.
A Detroit native, Garrett came of age in the 1980s and was grouped in with the so-called neo-traditionalist “Young Lions” of the era, but it was clear from the start that his adventurous spirit defied easy categorization. Beyond his work with Davis and the Ellington band, Garrett performed with trumpeters Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard before releasing his 1984 debut, Introducing Kenny Garrett, and joining one of the last iterations of Art Blakey’s vaunted Jazz Messengers.
Garrett’s extensive output as a leader established the saxophonist as a masterful composer and conceptualist, with standout sessions including 1990’s African Exchange Student , 1997’s Songbook, 2003’s Standard of Language , and the expansive, GRAMMY-nominated 2006 release Beyond the Wall .
Garrett received a GRAMMY nod for the 2009 all-star Five Peace Band Live with McBride, Chick Corea, and John McLaughlin, and his latest is the 2021 Mack Avenue quintet release Sounds from the Ancestors , featuring tributes to Roy Hargrove, Art Blakey, and Tony Allen.
Saxophone virtuoso and 2023 NEA Jazz Master Kenny Garrett is “one of the most admired alto saxophonists in jazz after Charlie Parker” ( The New York Times ). He returns to SFJAZZ with his latest acclaimed ensemble.
At the heart of his music is a struggle between emphasis and reason, volcanic force and tight control.

Kenny Garrett
Sounds from the ancestors.
Presented by Kiwanis Club of Glen Ridge & Friends of the Glen Ridge Library
Saturday, March 2 at 7:30PM
For more than 40 years, GRAMMY Award-winning saxophonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader Kenny Garrett has garnered critical recognition for his versatility in Jazz, Blues, and R&B contexts. He began his career with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Mel Lewis Orchestra. In 1987, Garrett began working with Miles Davis as a member of Davis’s working group—a collaboration that lasted for five years.
With more than 20 recordings as a leader and 230 as a sideman, Garrett has performed and recorded with a multitude of musical icons, including Art Blakey, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, Q-Tip, Pharoah Sanders, and McCoy Tyner. Garrett maintains a prolific touring and recording schedule with his own band, as well as the world’s most acclaimed jazz legends.
Garrett grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and his father played tenor saxophone. His early exposure to the instrument encouraged Garrett to pick up the horn and pursue a career in music. Throughout his solo career, Garrett’s music has varied stylistically from Jazz and Post-Bop to Soul, R&B, and Smooth Jazz to world music influences. Inspired by the spiritual Jazz of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, Garrett’s compositions often pay homage to his ancestors and mentors in Jazz but are rooted in contemporary sounds. For his latest album, Sounds From The Ancestors , Garrett explored his musical roots in Detroit, reflecting the city’s Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Funk, and Hip Hop musical forms, as well as West African and Afro Cuban traditions.
Garrett received the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters 2023 Fellowship – our nation’s highest distinction in Jazz. Other awards include 11 DownBeat magazine Readers Polls wins for alto saxophone; the 2022 NAACP Image Award and 2022 Jazz Music Award for Best Album. Additionally, Garrett holds an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston.

- “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems”
- “Somewhere With You”
- “I Go Back”
- “Get Along”
- “Never Wanted Nothing More”
- “Take Her Home”
- “When the Sun Goes Down”

- “Come Monday” (a Jimmy Buffett cover)
- “All the Pretty Girls”
- “The Good Stuff”
- “American Kids”
- “Setting the World on Fire”
- “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright”
- “How Forever Feels”
Chesney also came back for an encore performance of “Don’t Happen Twice”.
The next stop on the Kenny Chesney 2024 Tour will be on April 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina at Bank of America Stadium. The tour is expected to close on August 25 in Boston, Massachusetts at Gillette Stadium.
If you want to score last-minute tickets to this hefty North American tour, you’ve got a few different options. To start, you can get your hands on tickets directly from the singer’s website . There are also a ton of tickets available for different tour dates over at Ticketmaster . All of the presale events for this trek have since ended, so everything that is available is for general sale.
If those two avenues don’t work, you can always try Stubhub . We push Stubhub for tours like this because the platform usually has tickets available to high-profile concerts and tours just like this one. Plus, if your tour date is sold out, you might be able to find last-minute tickets on Stubhub after the fact. It’s worth at least taking a look to see what’s available!
