Kenya Wildlife Photography Destinations

Kenya is the best all-round photo safari destination in east africa with several world-class game reserves most notably the masai mara. kenya wildlife photography is not just about the annual wildebeest migration and there are plenty of other amazing destinations and times of the year to visit magical kenya ..

Possibly the most famous game reserve in Africa alongside The Kruger and Okavango Delta it plays host to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth – the Great Migration.

The Masai Mara , however, is just as photographically productive at other times of the year.

Wildebeest crossing during The Masai Mara Migration

Samburu is Kenya’s lesser known photo safari gem.

So many different and unusual species to be seen and photographed as well as the proud and supremely photogenic Samburu Tribe. As an addition to The Masai Mara there are few places in east Africa that can compete.

Amboseli is one of East Africa’s most iconic national reserves and famous for its big bull elephants , diverse ecosystem and of course glorious backdrops of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Kenya Photo Tours

Immortalized by award winning nature documentaries and hollywood blockbusters alike, kenya needs little introduction to wildlife photographers – the name safari is indeed synonymous with kenya.

This East African country offers the essence of an African wildlife photographic expedition, and besides the phenomenal wildlife, you can expect some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Africa.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve & it’s conservancies are a photographer’s haven as they are teaming with some of Africa’s most sought-after and quintessential wildlife and landscapes. As a year-round safari destination, each season has its own captivating show waiting for you!

From November to February, the Mara is dazzling green and plays host to the calving season. Various antelope, Wildebeest and Zebra give birth, whose offspring become easy prey for the vast numbers of carnivores found in the reserve. This season is dubbed Big Cat season due to the many predator and prey interactions, and combined makes for fantastic photographic opportunities. With less vehicle numbers during this “off” season, grab a front row seat as the Mara puts on a show between predator and prey – welcome to ORYX’s Life of Predators Photo Safari and Women Only Mara Photo Safari!

Considered one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles, the Great Migration sees over 1.5 million Wildebeests and thousands of Zebra and Gazelles traverse a continuous circular route from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti National Park. River crossings are a product of the Great Migration where fierce battles with monster crocodiles are often had and carnivores sit and wait for the opportune moment. This season is when our Best of the Mara Migration Photo Safari takes place for these awe-inspiring scenes and is considered a bucket list item for many!

In order to create the best possible photographic experience, we use only upmarket accommodations throughout our Kenya photography tours, and specially designed safari vehicles to optimise both game viewing and photography. Our small groups enjoy expert one-on-one on tutoring by a professional wildlife photographer and safari guide. Our Kenya photography tours are a truly one of a kind experience not to be missed!

Wildlife in Kenya. Kenya photo safaris and tours.

Boat trip on Lake Naivasha

Our initial night will be spent in a sophisticated Nairobi hotel. The following morning, we’ll venture to Lake Naivasha, an enchanting freshwater lake nestled within the Great Rift Valley.

Around the lake, picturesque old colonial houses, quaint thatch and clay villages, and blooming flower farms provide captivating subjects for photography.

Embarking on a one-hour boat journey, we’ll capture stunning shots of fish eagles, ospreys, cormorants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, and other fascinating wildlife.

Lake Nakuru National Park

We will then proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park. This is an ideal opportunity to capture images of the numerous flamingoes that grace the shores of the lake.

Within the national park, you’ll also have the chance to photograph White and Black Rhinos, the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, over 400 bird species, buffalos, waterbucks, lions, impalas, and a variety of other wildlife.

Masai Mara National Reserve

After departing from Lake Nakuru, our next destination is the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. Stretching seamlessly into the neighboring Serengeti Reserve in Tanzania, the Masai Mara is famed for hosting the “Big Five” – African elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros.

During our time in the reserve, we’ll go on morning and afternoon game drives, offering unparalleled opportunities to observe these incredible animals up close. Don’t forget to pack your telephoto lenses for an optimal wildlife photography experience.

People and culture

The Maasai, a Nilotic ethnic group, reside in northern, central, and southern Kenya, and are a captivating culture.

During our journey, we’ll have the unique opportunity to spend time with them, gaining insights into their way of life and capturing memorable photographs of this distinctive community.

The origin of safari, of romance under canvas on a vast African landscape, Kenya is where it all began. Today, its rich Maasai culture is woven into a classic safari experience that is centred around the annual wildebeest migration.

Our knowledge and experience of Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations allows us to craft journeys that hit exactly the right spots for photography, or hot-air ballooning, or watching the famous river crossings where predators lie in wait of an easy meal.

Kenya top Destinations

The crowning glory of a Kenya safari is indeed the Masai Mara, but knowing where and when to plan your trip for the migration is key. Our most highly rated Mara destination is the Mara North Conservancy, where some of the country’s premier tented camps and luxury lodges are located, offering far superior, private encounters with wildlife in a very popular part of Kenya.

Beyond the hype of the great migration are Kenya’s equally as remarkable wilderness areas, like Amboseli National Park – land of the planet’s last Big Tuskers. Here, these exceptional elephants, carrying tusks in excess of 50kg roam across open plains with the famous icy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Truly breath-taking.

Kenya is the Africa of your imagination. Planet earth on an epic scale. A place that fills your nostrils, kisses your skin, tingles your spine.

We spent 10 incredible nights with Lance as our private guide in Kenya. We stopped over in Nairobi at the Giraffe Manor, a simply must do for everyone, visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage before making our way to the Mara North Conservancy. The Mara North was one of the most fabulous places I have ever visited. We saw lions on every drive, one of the best destinations if this is what you are looking for, as well as elephants, buffalo, multiple cheetah, day old lion cubs, leopard and even drove to the National Park for one day and saw two wildebeest crossings!I can highly recommend traveling with Lance. He got us into the best position multiple times and seemed to know what the animals were going to do even before they did. Nicola Ann

KENYA – OUT OF AFRICA

FULLY BOOKED!

9 Day Photographic Safari

19th to the 27th of March 2023

THIS PHOTOGRAPHY SAFARI IS PRESENTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH AUSTRALIA'S LEADING AFRICAN SAFARI SPECIALISTS, ENCOMPASS AFRICA

Are you ready to take off on the ultimate photographic safari experience?

Masai Warriors

Kenya is known as the original safari country and the ultimate Out of Africa romantic safari destination. Here you can photograph some of the biggest prides of lions in Africa, witness impressive herds of elephants, experience colourful cultures and so much more. The photographic opportunities are endless

Leopard

On this nine day/eight night luxury Kenya photo tour we'll take in the impressive Amboseli National Park, where great elephant herds roam with the towering Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the background – this is the shot every photographer wants to take. Amboseli is a spectacular 40,000 wilderness with Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peaks as its backdrop. It lays the foundation for unrivalled photographic splendour. Imagine impressive elephant herds crossing the arid lake beds.

Our safari finale is private mobile luxury camping in the world-famous Masai Mara, a land of great plains, big cats and adrenalin-fuelled wildlife action. We like to avoid the main national park (and the crowds), and go somewhere remote that only a few people have discovered. Here you'll be guided by authentic Maasai people who will get you close to all the big cats and plains game action – and great photo opportunities.

The Masai Mara offers incredible photographic opportunity outside of the typical migration period. In fact, many an award winning image have been captured during the shoulder season either sides of the migratory movements. The Mara remains a quintessential safari experience in the Mara Experience Season and is still one of the bucket list items that any wildlife and nature enthusiast and photographer should tick off.

A Signature Experience

Africa wildlife photography tour: This Masai Mara photo safari is different to all others because African wildlife photographer, Greg du Toit, has specifically designed this itinerary for you to experience the most beautiful parts of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. This is an exceptional and classic Kenya photo safari with a ‘ best Amboseli photo safari ‘ extension easily added on. This Amboseli photo safari extension can be added either before or after your Masai Mara safari.

Greg has been photographing in the Masai Mara for many years. Long before Africa wildlife photography tours became popular, he used to camp in various parts of the reserve on his own. For this special safari, Greg has designed a photo itinerary that takes you to the parts of the reserve where he used to camp, enabling you to experience the true wonder and freedom of East Africa’s great plains. To do this you will stay in two camps; one in a forest on the banks of the Mara River and the other, a special luxury mobile camp erected specifically for this Kenya photo safari and in the most beautiful and remote part of the reserve.

Almost all other Kenya photographic safaris take place in a single location, on the periphery of the reserve and inside a conservancy. While you can easily add a 3 night extension to the Naboisho conservancy when filling out the form at the end of this page ,  this signature Masai Mara photo safari takes you to the very heart of the Masai Mara reserve and to the far-flung corners, where you will enjoy a true ‘great plains of East Africa’ photographic experience.

This exclusive Africa wildlife photography safari has space for only 3 photographers and you can easily extend your safari by doing any of the following 7 exciting ‘ best Kenya photo safari ‘ extensions (includes a big tusker photo safari ).

Masai Mara Predator Safari Itinerary

  • Day 2, 3, 4
  • Day 5, 6, 7

After being met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, your Africa wildlife photo safari begins as you are driven into the leafy suburbs of Karen. You will settle in to your luxury boutique hote l, just across the road from where Karen Blixen had her coffee farm. There is of course WiFi to let your loved ones know you have arrived safely.

Masai Mara photo safari

Special note: To get from the airport to your hotel, we take the southern bypass, so we do not go into Nairobi city at all on this safari.

After breakfast we transfer to a small airport out of town, called Wilson, for our flight to the great plains of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. An extra luggage allowance is included in the cost of this Kenya photo safari and for more on what equipment to bring, see the bottom of my Safari  FAQ page .

A short 40 minute flight on a scheduled charter will see you land on an airstrip in the heart of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. From the airstrip you will enjoy a short safari drive of approximately 15 minutes to our base camp for the next three nights.

Arriving at camp in time for lunch, you will be escorted to your very spacious luxury safari tent which has a private verandah, ensuite bathrooms and twin basins. Your camp is situated deep inside a beautiful riverine forest on the Mara River where the birdlife is prolific. Situated on this famous river in the heart of the reserve, you will literally feel your city stresses dissolve.

maasai mara photo safari - cheetah and cub

Located in the middle of the Masai Mara Game Reserve and in the middle of famous predator territories, like the Marsh Pride, you will spend the next few days exploring the incredible great plains of the Masai Mara. By basing ourselves in the heart of the reserve on this Kenya photo safari, we have no gate times to contend with and we are surrounded by 360 degrees of the best photographic opportunities in Africa. We are able to access the entire reserve, including the remoter parts, ensuring you get the full Masai Mara experience. With only three photographers onboard, you have maximum freedom to photograph out the left and the right, as we seek out unique thrilling photographic opportunities and lots and lots of predators.

Taking packed breakfasts with us allows us to follow predators hunting without needing to rush back to camp. You will indulge in some of the finest predator photography on offer anywhere in Africa and indeed in the world, as you photograph a wide array of predator sightings on your Kenya photo safari. It is not unusual to find a jackal den close to camp and the vast plains behind camp are dotted about with lone umbrella-shaped trees, making for a quintessential picture of Africa!

The Masai Mara is the photography mecca of Africa and on this Africa wildlife photography tour you will feel like you have stepped into a wildlife documentary.

Kenya photo safari - lions

Greg knows the Masai Mara intimately and will take you to the heart of the action and to the seldom seen far-flung and beautiful corners of the reserve, where you will enjoy a fine wilderness experience and be blown away by the beauty of Africa’s great plains .

A morning safari drive will take you to our next camp which is a luxury mobile camp that has been especially erected for you. You are now experiencing an Africa wildlife photography safari like Hemingway did! Your camp faces the great plains of East Africa and these are the most beautiful plains to be found in both the Masai Mara and the Serengeti reserves. You will receive a full safety briefing as, without any fences, predators roam freely. You did sign up for a predator safari right?

Your home for the next 3 nights is this intimate and superbly comfortable mobile camp on the great plains of East Africa.  This juxtaposition of camp locations, moving from the river to the plains, means that you will get the full Masai Mara experience with the associated photographic opportunities.

Kenya photographic safari - zebra

You will enjoy your meals alfresco on the great plains. The food is yummy and all cooked in the traditional safari style.

The photography is especially exciting in this part of the reserve as not only are predators abundant but the plains are exquisitely beautiful, offering you a chance to capture your animals in their environment . With the escarpment behind and the plains in front, dotted with umbrella-shaped trees, you can elevate your portfolio, making this a special Masai Mara photo safari that is different to all others.

There are no gate times to adhere to, nor are there long traveling distances as our camp is inside the beating heart of the reserve. Incredible sunsets, lone trees and Africa’s iconic animals on grassy plains are the order of the day! This is the Africa of your dreams.

africa wildlife photography safari

Sitting close to the campfire at night, you will enjoy the starry African sky and a delicious dinner. Once safely escorted to your tent by your Maasai watchman, you will be lulled asleep by the sounds of the African night, including a possible roar from a lion.

For those of you not staying on in the Mara to do 3 nights in the Naboisho Conservancy , a last safari drive ends at the camp’s airstrip and a short 45 minute schedule charter will take you from the Masai Mara back to Wilson Airport, where transfers are pre-arranged to Jomo Kenyatta International, for your onward travel home. This is officially the end of your Africa wildlife photography safari but if you not ready to go home keep reading  about exciting ways to extend your safari as an Amboseli photo safari is only a short flight away.

Why this Masai Mara photo safari is the safari for you…

maasai mara photo safari - cheetah and mom

– This safari itinerary gives you access to the entire Masai Mara national reserve. Make this the ultimate ‘mara safari’ by adding 3 nights at the Naboisho community conservancy . This gives you a sublime 9 night itinerary covering all corners of the ecosystem.

– This is not a big group Africa wildlife photography tour where your professional photographic tutor moves between safari trucks. On this Kenya photo safari there is only one truck and the same professional photographer will host and guide you for every safari drive.

– Where else in Africa can you potentially photograph lion, cheetah, leopard, serval, hyena, foxes and jackals? Not to mention all the other iconic animals of Africa in a beautiful setting on this Africa wildlife photo safari.

– With expansive scenery this Masai Mara photo safari takes you to the Africa of your dreams, an Africa teaming with wild animals, open plains and predators. This is the tour for you, so sign up now by filling in the booking form at the end of this page.

– With only 3 photographers on this Kenya photo safari you will receive help, guidance and advice on camera settings whilst on safari and back in camp. Greg has a complete photo workshop on his laptop so you can request lessons on any and very aspect of wildlife photography. The same applies on the Amboseli photo safari extension.

– You will be staying in two strategically located safari camps on this Africa wildlife photography safari: The 1st camp is in the heart of the reserve on the Mara River and also in the heart of numerous overlapping predator territories. The 2nd camp is a private mobile camp allowing you to photograph the predators and other iconic wildlife on the great plains of the Masai Mara. This camp has been specifically chosen so that you can photograph and experience the finest grass plains in all of East Africa. A private mobile safari camp is by far the best way to do an Africa wildlife photo safari.

– This Kenya photo safari is timed to coincide with the time of year when the migration has left. Not only are the tourist masses also gone but the predators are super hungry and active, making this one of the best Africa wildlife photography tours to do.

– The amount of general plains game like zebra, giraffe, gazelles, elephant, buffalo, hippo, warthog, jackal, eland, dikdik, kongoni (the list goes on and on) are in such abundance on this Africa wildlife photo safari that you will experience and photograph the absolute wildlife mecca of Africa. If you love elephants, then don’t miss the Amboseli photo safari extension!

– Because the wildlife sightings are so abundant and varied on this Masai Mara photo safari, we could not expect you to leave any lenses behind. For this reason, we have booked an extra luggage seat for the flight in and out of the Masai Mara.

– This is no ordinary Africa wildlife photography tour as the location of our camps allow us to access parts of the reserve where tourists are largely absent and where you can experience the Mara in more privacy and seclusion.

– This Kenya photo safari offers you freedom, exclusivity and personalised photographic tuition that larger scheduled tours cannot. With only 3 people on the safari your photography will be unhindered, more creative and will yield better results.

– This Masai Mara photo safari is tailor-made to suit wildlife photographers and it guarantees you a portfolio of dynamic imagery.

– Photographers of all levels are welcome on this Masai Mara photo safari and you will receive expert tuition based on your level of experience. If you would like a ‘camera refresh’ you can book the Amboseli photo safari extension before your Masai Mara safari.

– Non-photographing partners will LOVE this Kenya photo safari as the camps are luxurious and the experience is truly ‘Out of Africa’. Add any one of 6 extensions to your safari to make this an absolute best Africa wildlife photography tour .

– Amboseli photo safari extension: Enjoy splendid views of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro, as you explore two private concessions in the famous Amboseli National Park on an Amboseli photo safari (offered as an extension to this safari ).

kenya photo safari - giraffe sunset

– Photograph rhino, Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy’s Zebra on the highland plateau of Laikipia (also offered as an extension to this safari ). This is the most popular extension on offer and and turns your safari into the best private African photography safar i. See Run Rhino Run and On Wobbly Legs , photographed on this extension.

– If you want to experience and photograph Pink Africa on a Lake Bagoria flamingo photo safari then this can also be booked as an extension to your Africa wildlife photography tour making it a ‘ best East Africa private photographic safari ‘.

– You will be personally hosted and guided by professional African wildlife photographer Greg du Toit on this Africa wildlife photography tour. He has worked in the Masai Mara for 18 consecutive years now and photographed on assignment in the Masai Mara for the National Geographic Channel. He will also guide on your Amboseli photo safari and other extensions helping to make this a ‘ best Africa wildlife photography safari ‘.

– No fewer than 6 exciting extensions are offered to make this the very best Masai Mara photo safari . Book your place now by filling in the form at the bottom of the page. Space for only 3 photographers on the Masai Mara photo safari and all extensions booked on a ‘per request’ basis. Enquire about any extension when filling in the form below.

Client Testimonials

Peter Farmer UK

Thank you Stu for such a memorable photo safari.

WILD4 provided a totally professional service, from the pre-safari preparation to the sighting and photographing of so many animals and birds.  At all stages, your team provided first-class support and advice.  The package you provide is superb and that is why I am booking another safari with you.

Sue Green UK

Many thanks to Wild4 for a truly memorable trip.  Stu’s guidance and photography skills provided excellent opportunities to get some great shots.  His professionalism and commitment made the safari ‘special’.  Having only 3 photographers per vehicle made an incredible difference and there was plenty of time to shoot  - or just watch.

The accommodations and meals were excellent.  Many thanks to Justyna for her wonderful help on the admin side, making my booking a dream.

I have been on trips before but none quite so enjoyable as this one.

Would I go again?  Would I recommend to friends?  Without a doubt, a big YES to both!!

Sincere thanks again to you all.

George Cathcart USA

Wild4's photo safari to Botswana featured two expert guides, Stu Porter and Nkosi Sibanda and the abundant wildlife of four different Botswanan hot spots. Those features alone are worth the price of admission, particularly since they include vehicle modifications that ensure the best possible photographic experience.

We spent the first ten nights in expedition-style mobile camps, “roughing it” with bucket showers and drop toilets and listening to the leopards, elephants and hyenas wandering in and around the camp at night.  However, the expert staff made "roughing it" a pleasure, preparing perfect meals, including fresh-baked bread and cakes and ensuring that the camp was safe and clean.

We finished the 12-night trip in a luxury lodge on the Chobe River, where we photographed from a boat customised to accommodate serious photographers, in a waterway full of hippos and elephants and lined with Africa's most iconic birds.

If you can only go once to Africa, go to Botswana with Wild4 Photographic Safaris.  They will take care of every detail of your safari.  If you are an old Africa veteran, ditto.  You just can't go wrong with Wild4.

James Smith USA

We recently joined a Wild 4 African Photographic Safari. To put things simply, we were completely blown away.  Compared with others I’ve been on, this exceeded anything we had imagined, in so many ways.

Justyna handled all our travel and trip details with exceptional professionalism and always responded to even our most basic questions quickly and in a very detailed manner.  We were met by our photo guide Stu Porter, who I cannot say enough good things about.   His spotting ability and anticipation, together with his understanding of animal behavior and the ecosystem, produced an amazing wildlife experience.  He went to great lengths to ensure that we had the best chance of capturing a great photo, without compromising the rules of the park or the integrity of the animals. This made the trip so much more than just a “drive around and snap at whatever we see” kind of experience. In all honesty, I can’t imagine a better guide than Stu Porter.  We will be doing our future trips to Africa with Wild 4 and cannot recommend them highly enough.  Thank you so much for what a lot of people call “the trip of a lifetime”, although we feel that this is only the beginning of many trips of a lifetime.  Thank you, Wild 4!!

Andrew Oliver CANADA

For thirty-five years I have dreamed of going on a photographic safari in South Africa.  I have finally realised that dream and my hopes and expectations were surpassed in every way.

I researched extensively before settling on Wild4 Photo Safaris.  What an inspired choice that was!   This family company provides the perfect safari experience for photographers of every skill level.

Stu is a fine wild-life photographer and a first-class teacher.  His knowledge of the habitat and habits of the animals and birds to be found in Kruger National Park is simply encyclopaedic.  My 25-year-old daughter and I eagerly adapted to the early morning wake-up call, to go off into the wilds in one of Stu’s specially fitted jeeps, to catch the sunrise.

Every day brought its special moments and we returned home with thousands of photos to sort through and cherish for the memories they’ll bring back.

A safari with Wild 4 is a photographic experience with a master photographer, an initiation into the wonders of South African wildlife and spectacular landscapes - and an experience of friendship as everyone aboard the jeep bonds in common purpose.

Everything about Wild 4 is first class.  The organization is superb, accommodations excellent, choices of locale perfect.  Our safari with Stu and Wild4 was truly the experience of a lifetime.

Madhumita Bishnu India

I did my first safari outside Indie and I started with Masai Mara in Kenya led by Stu & Mamai. An exceptional safari it was with thorough knowledge of the animal world by Stu, ensuring that proper lighting due to strategic location for best photography was there. Mamai ensured that the jeep stopped at the exact place where I could get the best photographs. The landscape was beautiful and the animals were equally majestic. I got to see BIG 5 which I learnt in this trip and I’m extremely thankful to Stu for the sightings. Very well thought out, professionally conducted was the safari. Stu shared on photography tips and animals characteristics too. I look forward to joining on another safari in not so distant future. Thank you Stu & Mamai

Helen Clarke AUSTRALIA

This was my third photographic trip to Africa, and I have to say the best!  Stu has great knowledge & passion for wildlife and photography that he is willing to share: I certainly learnt a lot.  The setup for photography in the vehicles is extremely well thought out.

There was an amazing variety of great photographic opportunities and I really enjoyed time spent with the animals.  I am very pleased with the results!

After coming away with renewed enthusiasm for photography, I am planning to do another trip with them soon.

Rita Daubeney UK

Thank you so much for the best safari I have ever been on and for your tremendous help with both the photography and Lightroom.

I now understand more about both than I ever have.  Everything was brilliant.

We were extraordinarily lucky with what we saw and my greatly improved technique means I will have memories that will last forever.

Your Wild4 attention to detail means that things run smoothly in a part of the world not always known for that.

I really can’t thank you and Justyna enough.

Shopping for a travel adventure on the Web is somewhat risky, but finally, I picked Wild4 Photographic Safaris for one reason: the vehicle!

It was obvious that this was an outfit that understood photographic details and the needs of serious wildlife photographers.  The vehicle takes just three photographers and features platforms to steady big lenses on both sides of the vehicle and loads of storage space and pockets for lenses, bodies, accessories, binoculars, field guides, water, etc.,   I can not imagine a better platform for photography in the bush.

What is not as obvious in the online description is that the vehicle comes equipped with Stu Porter, the Wild4 owner and guide.  Stu is a deceptively shy young man with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Kruger National Park and the eyes of an eagle!

Stu's knowledge and patience are seemingly infinite and he is aware of both of his passengers' needs and everything around us.  He does everything humanly possible to provide the opportunity for the best shot and what’s more, he can instruct even the most seasoned photographer on technique.

In short, Wild4 Photographic Safaris is all about the vehicle, with spacious seats, shooting platforms and Stu Porter as standard equipment.  You can't do better.

Thank you, Stu!

This was simply an outstanding photographic safari all round – by far the best that I have been on!  As a keen enthusiast photographer, looking to step up a level and enter 2 competitions later in the year, I could not have hoped for more.  Excellent!

The Wild4 team is very well organized and their prompt and helpful responses to queries pre-trip ensured they were easy and a pleasure to deal with.

Stu Porter can pitch his photographic tuition at any level and his attention to detail and enthusiasm was spot on throughout this trip.  Already comfortable with my own photo technique, I was surprised by just how much I learned.  I have easily adopted his full-on manual approach, every bit of which he was able to justify - a revelation!  I am quite picky, but I cannot praise these guys enough and I will be back.

Very many thanks to the whole team.

REMOTE KENYA: Tribes of Lake Turkana, the Chalbi Desert, the Ndoto Mountains and Samburu

Our Kenya photography tours concentrate on wildlife photography in one of Africa’s leading photo safari venues. Kenya is a dream destination for many photographers and in particular participating in a Masai Mara wildlife photography tour, at the time of the annual migration.

Kenya’s Masai Mara is world famous for its spectacular migration of wildebeest and zebras, which for several months each year cross into the Mara from the neighbouring Serengeti plains in Tanzania. At this season, Nile Crocodiles, Lions and other big cats lie in wait at the traditional crossing places along the Mara River, making for awesome wildlife photography!

Our Kenya photography tours are based on a private concession in the Masai Mara, where we share the experience with just a few other people, not the crowds who visit the Masai Mara reserve proper.

Our Kenya photography tours also explore the Laikipia Plateau, the best place in the country for African Wild Dogs and also a rich area for other wildlife, making this unusual tour one of Africa’s very best photo safaris.

Bird watching Tours

Kenya has one of the richest avifaunas in Africa with around 1090 bird species recorded. At least eight of these are national endemics. Around 170 species of Kenya’s birds species are Palearctic migrants (11 species of them with a local breeding population too), mainly from eastern Europe, Russia, the middle East and Siberia. Another 60 species migrate regularly within the Afro-tropics or from Madagascar. Some 335 species are found in forest; 230 species are entirely forest dependent.

Wildebeest Migration Safari

Wildebeest Migration Safari

The Great wildebeest migration takes place within Kenya and Tanzania and is one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth. Between the open plains of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, thousands of wildebeest and zebras migrate to greener pastures as the seasons change. The precise timing of the Wildebeest Migration changes annually and it is a very unpredictable and spontaneous natural event. Taking place between July and October, but the exact times are dependent on the length of the rainy season preceding it.

Loved by non-photographers too, our photo tour holidays offer the ultimate, small-group travel experience to the world's most wonderful and unique places - with special access away from the crowds. I love to travel, but I hate being stuck with loads of other people (especially when we've got nothing in common), being taken to the regular, over-crowded tourist attractions or wasting hours in an amazing country just relaxing by some pool. I want to get the most out of my holidays - I want to see as many different animals as I can, I want to travel through different landscapes and be shown hidden gems off the beaten path, I want to experience the culture, taste the food, meet new friends with similar interests, enjoy some luxury and importantly, I want to have the time to take some beautiful and unique photos of it all. This is what we strive for with our photography tours and workshops. It's not enough for me to spot a distant lion, tick it off and move on - I want to have the option to try and get closer, on the correct side for best lighting and even wait for him to lift his head and stare directly down the barrel of my camera lens for a great photo - or to move on when I'm done - I want flexibility. I want the inside tips for the best photo location to be ready when the sun rises over the horizon and spills across the bay onto those boulders - and if I can't quite get my photo to work, it'd be awesome to have a friendly pro-photographer right there to offer advice (not one who'll stand in front of me to get the best shot themselves!). If there's a seal colony out on an island nearby, then I'd want to charter a boat tour out there just with my friends onboard so we can spend as long or as short as we want to get the photos without being crowded on a regular sight-seeing tour. If the seal colony was a bit of a tourist attraction on a local beach then I'd want to wait for the crowds to leave, and go down onto the beach after hours - just us as a small group, and a private ranger guide to photograph them at our leisure in beautiful evening lighting. You don't even need to be a photographer to love this style of holiday - who wouldn't like a bit of luxury and a bit of extra patience from their tour leaders, or to be given the opportunity to fly over lakes covered in pink flamingos in Africa in a doors-off plane or over a beautiful coastline in a doors-off helicopter for some epic views? Stay on a private island, learn some new skills with your photography, make some new friends and have an unforgettable, unique holiday - all at the same time! Sound good? Well, there's a reason more than half of our guests come back again, and again on our photo tours!

Absolutely not! We have many non-photographers (and partners of photographers) enjoy our tours! As one guest said "It didn’t matter that I’m not a photographer - I used my iPhone. Just experiencing all these amazing locations at a relaxed pace, in comfort and without the crowds was wonderful!" . The expert photography tuition is a bonus - the incredible access to experience the best places in a tiny group is the main thing! If you're traveling to take photos, or just as a holiday - in the end, it's all about seeing as many of the amazing animals as possible, experiencing the local food and culture, admiring the landscapes, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the whole unforgettable experience with a small group of friends. Whether or not you put a camera in front of your face doesn't really change this. We've had many non-photographers come on our tour, enjoying just spotting animals, identifying them, or watching their behaviour and by the end of the trip many of them do start picking up a camera (or borrowing one of ours) and start getting excited about photography too! Some have later gone on to become full-on photographers, to the delight of their partners! Either way, they have a ball and often come away with us again and again. Most photography guests are beginner to keen-enthusiast level - so no need to stress that your photography may not be good enough - the whole point is to improve your photography, no matter what your level! Our tours are enjoyed by everyone from non-photographers, iPhone and happy-snap photographers right up to serious professionals. We start each tour with a quick photography crash-course, and our expert photography guides are there to help you throughout the whole tour. There is no better way to improve your photography than spending a solid week or two practicing, surrounded by amazingly inspiring subjects, with a small, friendly group of like-minded people. You will be amazed how much your photography will improve. We're there to offer as much or as little assistance as you'd like, at whatever level of complexity you're ready for.

The level of physical activity varies for each of our tours (check the dropdown for each specific tour), however none involve strenuous hiking or anything like that. In Kenya, for example, the hardest thing you'll have to do is walk to and from your tour vehicle mostly, other destinations involve things like optional snorkelling, or may include short walks or humid conditions. We've had 83 year old guests, guests with bad knees and even heart-conditions do even what we consider our most strenuous tours, so rest assured the tour you're looking at is very likely achievable. If you're concerned, just ask us. The tour information booklet we provide for each tour gives a clearer indication of what's involved for each destination. We're very mindful of the abilities of our guests and can always provide less demanding alternatives for those wishing a break.

For each of our tours, we've carefully prepared a detailed information booklet covering everything including our recommendations for what kind of clothes to bring, what type of power plug, what currency, what the climate is like, language tips and plenty of other information to help answer all your questions! We'll send you a copy of this information booklet when you book, or you can email us for one in advance. As for what kind of camera gear is best, whatever you have is fine, but if you've got too much and need help deciding what to bring and what to leave behind, or if you have a bit of money you could spend on getting something really perfect for the trip, please just contact us and we can certainly help you out with what's ideal for each particular tour!

Fear not - more than half of our tour guests travel solo. To help you make friends before you even leave and to be reassured and aided by the advice of your fellow-travellers (and those who have gone before you), we've created an interactive Facebook group for our CBP Voyager Club members (that's anyone who's been on, or is going on any of our tours, which also gives them 5-10% OFF any future tours!). You can find out who's coming from your area, perhaps even meet up beforehand or fly together. This is a great resource and we encourage you to make the most of it if you're on Facebook! Anyone can read the CBP Voyager Club Facebook page , but you can only interact once you've paid your deposit. And do not worry that most accommodation is twin-share - we're good at pairing you up with a roomie who you'll get along with - it has been the start of long-term friendships for many! We can't guarantee that we'll always be able to have you sharing with someone of the same sex - it depends on the gender split, but we do our best. You can request to purchase a single supplement (a room to yourself) if you really need to (subject to availability) though keep in mind that you're usually only in your rooms to sleep as we fill your waking hours with plenty to do, and the couple of occasions we have had guests request rooms to themselves, they end up regretting it when they see the amazing friendships that form between the other roomies.

Of course we can - even in places like Kenya we've successfully catered for vegan, gluten-free, lactose-intolerant and vegetarian guests, and all have had a wonderful tour.

Rest assured that we do not travel through any of the major danger hot-spots like those highly warned against in travel advisory boards etc. For example, in Kenya, we do not even pass through downtown Nairobi and we operate completely away from the coast / Mombasa region and the Somali border. The fact that we like to take you to the more tranquil, less-touristy places on our tours conveniently means we only ever spend minimal time in busy, built up areas or large tourist attractions where thieves or terrorists might target - most of the places we stay at are quite rural and private, and you'll quickly feel right at home & safe.

Our cancelation policies are in line with other leading tourism operators, and you can read all about them here in our Booking Terms and Conditions . We are proud to employ industry best-practices.

The Voyager Club is our photo tour loyalty program! As our photo tours apparently can be very addictive (we've had guests come to more than half a dozen of our tours!), we created the Chris Bray Photography Voyager Club, giving repeat guests 5% OFF future tours with automatic Silver Membership , and then 10% OFF as Gold Members after their fifth tour with us.

Either click the 'Book Now' button above and fill in your details, or simply contact us and let us know which tour you're keen to join us on, and we'll send you a deposit invoice to secure your spot, along with the tour information booklet and our Booking Terms and Conditions .

The tour doesn't start until tomorrow morning, but we've included tonight's accomodation for you at 'The Weston' hotel in the quiet outskirts of Nairobi.

Our Kenya photo tour officially starts when we meet after breakfast at the Weston Hotel's conference room for a meet & greet, and a quick photography refresher course. Then we'll transfer you to Wilson Airport (near the international airport), and board our 45-minute flight to the legendary Maasai Mara! We land and head to the nearby 'Mara Ngenche Safari Camp' - our luxurious home for the next five unforgettable nights (see their website!). In a spectacular location in the heart of the Maasai Mara lies this small, intimate, luxurious and elegant camp. Well hidden in the beautiful greenery of riverine forest, each spacious tent is equipped with its own private plunge pool and offers panoramic views over the confluence of the Mara and Talek Rivers, a section that is always busy with hippos and crocodiles. After lunch, we won't be able to contain our excitement anymore and before you know it we'll be in our two extended, pop-top land cruisers with our cameras at the ready as our world-class driver guides take us out on our first of many unforgettable game drives throughout this wildlife mecca. By evening, you'll be on such an incredible, buzzing high that, despite your comfy 4-poster bed, sleep won't be an option! So instead, as soon as you've set your cameras to download and charge, we'll gather and unwind at the picturesque bar tent to enjoy a sundowner cocktail or Tusker beer in front of a blazing campfire under the African stars before our gourmet dinner. All the meals here are freshly prepared by the camp's head chef from their fantastic a'la carte menu. As you wander sleepily back to your tent, let the steward know what time you would like your wake up call and be sure to keep an eye out, as being an unfenced camp right inside the reserve, wildlife can and will wander right though! Fear not, however, as there are Maasai warriors on hand to perpetually ensure your safety, day and night!

The Masai Mara is world famous for its exceptional population of lions (BBC's 'Big Cat Diary' was filmed here, in fact our driver John was involved), leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, hunting dogs and other predators which follow the epic annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle to and from the Serengeti at this time of year which we have come specifically to witness and photograph. The Great Migration is one of the most impressive natural events worldwide, involving some 1,300,000 wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson's gazelles, 200,000 zebras, 97,000 topi and 18,000 elands. All members of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) are also found in The Mara, along with other cats like the Serval and Caracal, large and beautiful Topi antelope, and 470 species of birds. I hope you all brought enough spare memory cards, because the density of wildlife has to be seen to be believed! During these five days in The Mara, we'll explore around a fair bit, and chase many different photographs, but if we're lucky and the animals cooperate, we'll get the chance to hunker down beside the mighty Mara River and watch the thousands of wildebeest and zebra firstly congregating on the banks and then bravely plunging wide-eyed into the rushing water and striking out for the far side, while enormous Nile crocodiles (the biggest on Earth) lie in wait. While perhaps not for the faint-hearted, if we're lucky enough to see this mighty struggle of nature, it will present you with some astounding photo opportunities, and an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life. This year we're also including an amazing hot-air balloon flight at sunrise one morning up over the Mara - a truly magical experience you'll never forget, followed by a champagne breakfast!

We're shaking things up a little today, and after breaky we have a real treat in store for you! We have charted a 12 seater plane to fly us from the Maasai Mara airstrip direct to a little known treasure: Lake Baringo. The flight will take about 1 hr and on the way make sure to keep an eye out for the breath-taking Rift Valley as it drops away beneath us, dotted with Maasai villages, amazing craters and herds of wildlife. But wait - there's more! Have you seen the movie 'Out of Africa' where Robert Redford and Meryl Streep fly over a lake carpeted with millions of pink flamingos? Well that's going to be us! Once we disembark the transfer flight and enjoy a refreshment, a smaller plane will fly in to meet us at Lake Baringo, and we'll take the doors off so you can feel the wind in your hair and enjoy amazing open-side view for photography as the plane flies over the flocks of both Greater and Lesser flamingos on the nearby Lake Bogoria. Who knows, you might even take a photo or two (thousand)! Unforgettable! Guests have literally stepped off this flight and said "That is the best thing I have ever done in my whole life!". When the adrenaline wears off we'll board a boat and head off to our private island and unwind in in our luxurious accommodation, the 'Samatian Island Lodge' located on a remote island in the middle of Lake Baringo. Spot amazing birdlife (sea eagles, kingfishers, sunbirds, hornbills and more), a Nile crocodile or even a hippopotamus. We'll all enjoy a well-deserved relaxing afternoon off, going through your photos with a tusker or coffee while sitting out on the panoramic dining terrace! Come dinner, you'll probably find that for an 'afternoon-off' you've still managed to take a huge number of photos, and there'll be plenty to chat about, before filling your belly with an amazing dinner prepared by our own private chef.

Yet another amazing experience! After downing a pre-dawn tea/coffee (they taste the best!) we'll climb aboard our waiting boats for a fantastic three hour boat tour out onto Lake Baringo! By the time the brilliant orange orb of the rising sun splashes its warmth across the lake, we'll already be nosing in and out of the reed-beds, framing up stunning photos of all-manner of birdlife skillfully identified by our local guides. Majestic Goliath Herons, diving kingfishers, stalking egrets, colourful darting Bee-eaters, Egyptian Geese, Hammerkops, Weaverbirds and more. In fact, Lake Baringo holds the world record for the most species of birds seen in one day - over 300! The best is yet to come, though, and after bartering some fish from locals out fishing on their astoundingly simple (and picturesque) balsa-wood rafts, our guides will then whistle loudly and chuck the fish into the water beside our boats. Switch your camera to rapid-fire, focus on the bobbing fish, and I'll count you in: Three... two... one... NOW! An enormous African Fish eagle will swoop down right beside us, talons extended, and snatch the fish from the water! You can imagine the photos. It's hard to get that exact moment though, so in between dodging yawning hippos and fields of lily pads with dragon flies as we explore the lake, we'll be sure to coax down several more Fish eagles for you to nail that perfect shot. Back on shore, you'll be more than ready to enjoy a hearty breakfast including omelettes, fresh fruit, cereal etc. The day is yours to relax and enjoy - or download and start culling your photos with a cold beer before another wonderful lakeside evening meal. We'll also fit in some 1-on-1 sessions to help you with your photography, and anyone who's keen for a swim in the lake can join me.

Because I know you'll all be secretly jealous of each others' fish eagle shots, we'll wake up pre-dawn and head back on the boats again for a couple more hours of birding (so you can attempt to better their shot)! After another wonderful breaky, we'll hit the road and actually head in to the remote Lake Bogoria (the flamingo lake we flew over) but this time by road, so we can photograph the flamingos on foot! It's quite amazing to experience the sheer numbers of these flamboyant birds up close! After lunch nearby, we'll drive onwards to our Kenyan home away from home - 'Rhino Watch Safari Lodge' - where we'll enjoy the next two nights in this family-owned and run luxury hideaway. We'll arrive at Rhino Watch in time to check in, and enjoy a delicious dinner. As we're up higher now, at the foot of the snow-capped Mount Kenya which is clearly visible from your 'chalet', it can get a little chilly - but of course they'll look after us here, even slipping a hot water bottle between your sheets ready for you as you finish dinner. It's good to be 'home'.

The problem with 'optional rest-days', or saying that you can 'skip a game drive if you like if you're feeling tired' is that everyone always dreads the photos they might miss out on, and so they come along anyway. There's no denying it though, what with all the early starts and the evenings that are just too pleasant under the stars to go in to bed (even if we're not trying to lure you out for some late night star-trail photos or painting with light), you'll all really enjoy today immensely, because today is a holiday (within a holiday). We'll have our delicious breakfast wonderfully late and spend a beautifully lazy morning enjoying the sun, flicking through your photos, or photographing the gardens (keep an eye out for those elusive chameleons!). After breakfast we'll set up a projector and have a look at the photo organising software Adobe Lightroom and how you can use this program to get the most out of your photos. We'll make a visit to a local school or orphanage which is always a delightful opportunity to be touched by the student's smiles and optimism, and a chance to give back to the community and the kids who will in turn be the custodians of this wonderful land. We'll have pre-bought boxes and boxes of crucial school supplies to hand out, including exercise books, pens, math sets, feminine hygiene items and more. It's wonderful, and we look forward to this every tour. After enjoying lunch served out on the wooden deck gazing at Mount Kenya, this afternoon we'll find an opportunity to sit down with each of you individually for a 1-on-1 session.

Time to say goodbye to our friends at Rhino Watch (for the time being) and head onwards to our next location for this tour - the wonderful Samburu National Reserve! On the way, we'll stop at an amazing little roadside garden for what seems just like a toilet stop, but if you look closely at the plants, you may start to spot some chameleons!!! This is actually quite a highlight, and we'll find a bunch of them, and they are so relaxed you can even let them walk on your hands, and offer them up to any flies you see and their independently wandering eyes will then both lock forwards onto the fly and then... thwack! The impossibly long tongue will fire out and grab the fly! So amazing! The novelty will never ware off, but eventually I'll need to drag you away to continue the drive to our favourite accommodation in the whole of Kenya, the very luxurious ' Elephant Bedrooms '. After the stewards pass you a damp cloth to wipe your brow, and a glass of chilled, fresh fruit juice to quench your thirst, we'll then listen to the usual warnings of how elephants and other animals frequently wander right through and around camp (and the new discovery that the resident monkeys can now unzip tents and so you must use the provided padlocks!), you'll be escorted to your 'tent' (and I use that term in the loosest way possible, as you'll see when you look at Elephant's Bedroom's website!) to quickly unpack and hasten back to the shaded outdoor tables on the riverbank for an amazing three course lunch. When the heat of midday subsides a little after lunch and the animals start to emerge, (and after you've emerged from the personal, refreshing plunge pool out the front of your 'tent'), we'll head out for an afternoon's game drive, crisscrossing Samburu's diverse and animal-filled landscapes in the search for yet more photographs. We'll have pre-organised special off-road filming permits for our vehicles, so nothing can stop us positioning ourselves in the very best spot possible for amazing close-up photos! In addition to the uniquely forked Doum Palms decorating the area, there's some quite unique animals here too, and we should be able to find plenty of tiny little Dik-dik's (the smallest antelope), hornbills, the very elegant oryx, the finer-stripped Gravy's zebra, lion, cheetah, and perhaps even a leopard. The graceful Impala are more laid-back here too, and should allow us some more close-up and creative shots. Again, by staying at accommodation located inside the park, we are in the privileged position of being able to stay out shooting even while the sun's red orb sinks below the horizon, perhaps even capturing the 'money-shot' of a silhouetted elephant or giraffe against the sunset. After sticking your camera on charge and downloading your day's spoils, come and join us for a relaxing drink on the verandah, before our four-course, candle-lit gourmet dinner under the African sky.

We'll be up before sunrise to grab a quick tea or coffee and a biscuit before heading off into the ever fading blackness, trying to find ourselves that picturesque, classic African 'flat topped acacia tree' with plenty of weaver bird nests hanging underneath, to silhouette against the sun as it pops over the horizon. Once we've got that in the bag, we'll cruise around the park seeking out yet more photo opportunities, hopefully involving some big cats if we're lucky, and then we'll be back for a late, gourmet breaky at Elephant Bedrooms. We know you're all keen to take a look at your images from the last few days so after your late breakfast feel free to take it easy, relax by your plunge pool or at the communal lunge area, grab a cool drink and flick through your photos. Keep your camera handy an eye on the river outside your tent though, as elephants often wander right on down for a drink. We'll meet together again for a scrumptious lunch before heading back out for an afternoon game drive Be sure to have your animal photo check-lists handy to tick off those elusive shots this afternoon. A Greater Kudu perhaps (a huge and magnificent antelope), or maybe the electric-blue vulturine guinneafoul or ververt monkey? Or maybe you're still seeking that to-die-for shot - a leopard in a tree? There'll still be plenty of elephants and probably some lions and cheetahs about too, because let's face it, you'll never have enough photos of them either! Go nuts! In the evening we'll head back to our luxurious Elephant Bedrooms and chill out with a 'hard-earned' drink and an amazing dinner.

Coaxed awake by your delivery of tea or coffee with biscuits to assist your gentle transition into another glorious morning in one of Kenya's most famous parks, we'll squeeze in one last early morning game drive around Samburu. You may think you've seen it all by now, but trust me, there's always more to discover, and you never know what you might find around every corner. A pride of lions on a kill? A flock of electric-blue vulturine guinea fowls? A huge bull elephant standing in the middle of the road, his huge great tusks almost dragging on the ground as he shakes his head defiantly at us? Even if you've seen it before, there's always a better photo you could take! We'll be back to enjoy one last gourmet breakfast here before collecting our bags and farewelling Elephant Bedrooms camp to journey back to our Kenyan 'home away from home', the wonderful Rhino Watch Safari Lodge. Plus, today we're in for some African culture! En route we'll be exclusively welcomed into a traditional maasai/samburu village where the chief will explain their culture, walk us through their huts, show us how to start a fire by rubbing sticks, put on a cultural performance for us and more. Feel free to take as many photos as you want, if you have any memory space left to photograph it that is! Arriving back at Rhino Watch this afternoon for a cold tusker or cocktail at the bar, after freshening up in your homely chelet, will be the perfect way to end the day. Have a go capturing another star trail after our gourmet dinner tonight, or just cozy into bed with your hot water bottle in preparation for our last day of game drives tomorrow!

The privately owned 'Solio Ranch' just down the road is becoming increasingly off-limits, as it's primarily dedicated to the protection and breeding of the very rare black rhinos, so we're very lucky to still be able to enter the conservancy for a full day's game drive today. After stumbling down to the restaurant before dawn to indulge in another delicious breaky consisting of fresh fruit, juices, freshly baked pastries, eggs - even omelettes to your liking - we'll load into our vehicles and head over to Solio to be ready and waiting at the gates when they open them for us. Considering it's our last day of game drives, we're keen to maximise our stay inside this wonderfully diverse reserve, especially in that golden morning lighting! There is of course every chance of bumping into almost any animal around every corner here, so stay alert! Aside from the endangered black rhino, there's a good chance of bumping into any of the big cats including lions, leopards and even cheetahs (my favourite), and various antelope, giraffes, vultures, zebras etc will of course spatter the landscape too! There's also plenty of birdlife including birds of prey, large herds of impala, troops of baboons, monkeys, giraffe - you name it. Solio's a great park to finish on because it's largely off the 'tourist trail' - we can go all day without passing another vehicle! Our expert guides, who can spot things like you wouldn't believe, will point out some incredible photo opportunities! After a full day of game driving, we'll return to Rhino Watch and there'll be time for a shower and a quick chill-out before we gather for a celebratory last dinner together, remembering all the amazing things we've seen, and trying to decide which is your favourite photo.

That's it folks! Thank you so much for coming and sharing this experience with your new group of friends! After one last amazing breaky at the beautiful Rhino Watch, we'll provide airport transfers for each of you. It's about a 4 hour drive back to Nairobi, so make sure you book an afternoon flight home (departing after 2pm) in order to enjoy a leisurely breakfast together. Before you know it, you'll be jetting back home, back to the real world that has been so far away for the last fourteen unforgettable days. Make sure you stick a giant photo on the wall back home, so that every time you walk past it you'll immediately be transported back here to Africa, to re-live the magic of the great African migration.

IMPORTANT - Ensure you have read our Tour Booking Conditions prior to booking. The document covers everything from your rights, inclusions and payment schedule, to our cancellation policy and extent of liability. All our photo tours are subject to minimum numbers. Please ensure you have read our tour booking conditions for our cancellation policy (above). All meals are provided, however beverages must be purchased at your own expense. Bottled drinking water will be provided for free during game drives. There won't be any strenuous hiking, but a reasonable level of mobility will be required, to climb into the light plane, to get in and out of our safari vehicles etc - if you're concerned, you do not need to come on the few short walks we do. Remember, you do not have to be able to out-run a lion - you merely have to be able to out run someone else in our group. j/k. This is one of our least strenuous safaris. This is Africa we're going to - there may be occasional power outages, some of the roads are bumpy and pot-holed, and toilets that we pass along the way are not always going to be classy! It's all part of the experience though, and I'm sure you'll survive. (The bathrooms - as with everything else - at all our accommodation venues, are wonderful!) After you book, we will email you an extensive information document telling you everything you need to know from what camera gear to bring, to mozzie protection, currency information, mobile reception etc. Price does not include flights from your hometown to Nairobi, (Kenya's capital), nor your return flight back home. However, if you book early, flights from Sydney to Nairobi can cost around $2,200 return. We have our own travel agent who is more than happy to help answer all your questions and help you find and book the best flights, travel insurance etc. We do not loan out our own camera equipment. Park entry fees and game drives are included in the price. You'll require a Tourist Visa to enter Kenya for this tour. These are easy to obtain and are valid for 3 months. You will also need a valid passport, with at least 6 months left on it before it expires, and at least two empty pages within. A non-refundable, non-transferable $1,000 booking deposit is required.

Our Most Booked Kenya Safari Packages

Best photo safari destinations in kenya – the best african photo safaris packages.

Next, we share our best-rated Kenya safari packages and destinations  that give you a chance to capture awe-inspiring photos and videos.

 1. African Photo safari packages Destination #1. Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara has a soul of its own. A soul kept alive by its vibrant, completely dumbfounding flora and fauna. The park is one of the reasons the Great Rift Valley is so great. Its open grassland a magnificence your camera ought to capture.

A selfless giver, the park shares her immense beauty with you, with over 95 mammal species and 400 bird species to see. The sunny weather makes those Kenya wildlife photos even better, the sunrise and sunset an opportunity you would hate to miss.

For the wildlife and scenery, we have the park’s western escarpments with animals such as the Big Five, cheetahs, hyenas, elands, zebras, and impalas frequenting the place.

The Mara Triangle is as fascinating, a point the spectacular Mara River helps put across. To capture is the great wildebeest migration, an occasion graced by over a million wildebeests and an almost equal number of zebras and impalas.

The adrenaline-packed experience is levitating, those hippo-pounce-on-zebra shots a treasure you will thank us for. For aerial shots, we have the balloon ride, which is, in all honesty, the best way to experience the park.

Also, fun to capture are the Maasais in their cultural villages.

 2. African Photo Safari Tours Destination #2. Amboseli National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro has to be the highlight of every Amboseli visit. The view from there is effortless, with the park offering Africa’s highest-peaking mountain in angles any photographer would kill for.

Not one for boring, the park makes sure to keep your photo safari in Kenya as interesting as possible by entertaining you to its five incredibly different habitats. To make sure your Kenya wildlife photos are wholesome is the park’s observational hill. The hill overlooking the swamp gives you a bird’s eye view of the park, giving you a go at those prize-worthy shots.

To capture is the large wildlife population, which heightens the park’s appeal to insane lengths. Elephants, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, lions, buffaloes, over 600 bird species, and wild dogs being among the must-sees. The elephant population is the highest in the region, their number nearing the 900 mark.

An interaction with the local Maasai people is also on the cards.

 3. Kenya Photography Safari Destination #3. Lake Nakuru National Park

Mix that flamingo pink with a light baby blue, and you get Lake Nakuru… And there, right by its shores, is Lake Nakuru National Park . The KWS managed park spreads its magnificence over 69.5 square miles of land, right at the floors of the Great Rift Valley. To prove worthy of the title ‘best photo safari destination in Kenya , is its seamless scenery encompassing picturesque marshy and woody grasslands.

There are over 56 different mammal species to photograph, some of which include the waterbucks, impalas, warthogs, Rothschild giraffes, white rhinos, the highly endangered black rhino, and the buffaloes. The nearby Lake Nakuru is a definite attraction largely for its popular flamingo-filled waters. Also to see are the great Makalia falls, known to draw in thousands of the 450 bird species in the park. To help with that perfect shot are the lion hill, baboon cliff, and out-of-Africa viewpoints.

 4. Kenya Photography Safari Destination #4. Hell’s Gate National Park

To have inspired a movie as great as the Lion King is enough explanation as to why the Hell’s Gate National Park made it to our list of the best Kenya tourist attractions. The scenery here is bananas, and the ambiance is the park’s way of reminding us why she is more than just rock.

Your fingers will go numb at the camera flicking, for there’s not an inch of the 68.25km Squares you will not want to capture. With the scenery comes soaring cliffs, water emptied gorges, rock towers, scrubbed volcanoes, and geothermal streams. To top it off is a wide array of wildlife, which includes the hartebeest, buffalo, baboon, zebras, Thompson gazelles, reedbucks, antelopes, and over 100 bird species.

Also captured are the hot springs, Olkaria Geothermal Station, Mervyn Carnelly Hide, raptor nesting, and the tourist circuits. The photos you can take during game riding, rock climbing, biking, or hiking here.

 5. Kenya Photography Safari Trips Destination #5. Diani Beach Kenya

There’s nothing quite like it. Nothing even close to the Diani magnificence. With as small as a 17 km shoreline, the beach, with its impeccable white-sandy beach, has managed to top the World Heritage list of ‘best beaches in Africa’ for 5 years in a row now.

Its waters are a bewitching blue, its overall scenery a thing that will have your camera running wild. Blending perfectly with the insane amounts of Diani blue is the lush green forest that is the very life of this beach.

A must-see is the coral mosque overlooking the beach, and the monkey sanctuary just next by. A boat ride will see you to the Shimba Hills, turtle information center, and Wasini Islands, which are equally taking.

Boat rides, and activities such as kitesurfing, deep-sea diving, and skydiving, will help you capture this beauty.

 6. Best Photo Safari in Africa Destination #6. Lewa Downs

Lewa sits at the northern slopes of Mount Kenya with so much grace you’d be jealous. And there, from above it, brilliant views of the Samburu reserve, Mt. Ololokwe, and the great Ewaso Nyiro River.

A ridiculously gorgeous landscape coupled with a great wildlife variety is what makes this conservancy such a great Kenya photo safari destination . The Grevy’s Zebra population, for example, is the highest there is in the world, while the highly endangered black rhino population in the conservancy is the highest in East Africa. Other animals in the park include the sitatungas, big five, elephants, cheetahs, and the Oryx, among many others.

The conservancy’s open grasslands are remarkable, and to supplement them comes the gorgeous Lewa swamp, a stunning natural forest, and a view of the Mt. Kenya.

Also to see is the Ngare Ndare Forest, which is an amazing combination of lush greenery, a waterfall, river, and huge amounts of elephants.

 7. Photographic Safaris in Africa Destination #7. Aberdare National Park

If sensational was a place, then it would definitely look like the Aberdares. The park’s scenery is dreamlike, its open moorland and forested ravines the very definition of perfect. A must-see are its outstanding waterfalls, river valleys, and ridges.

Calling the park home is an array of black rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, olive baboons, hyenas, leopards, warthogs, and the colobus monkeys. Rarities in the parks include the African wild cat, Giant forest hog, bongo, and the serval cat.

A visit up the Karuru Waterfalls will have you interact with the over 250 bird species in the park. Common sightings include the sunbird, eagles, plovers, and the Francolins

 8. Photographic Safaris in Africa Destination #8. Ol Pejeta Conservancy

364 sq km in size, the Ol Pejeta is a wildlife conservancy cushioned between the slopes of the Mt. Kenya and those of the Aberdares. The conservancy’s beauty is boundless, its wildlife-to-area ratio beating that of any park or reserve in the country.

More than 1000 mammals call the conservancy home, as well as the big five and a large variety of the Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s Hartebeest, cheetahs, and hyenas among many others.

A photo safari here gives you the chance to take home pictures of the only two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. Also to see are the highly endangered southern white rhinos and close to 80 white rhinos.

The Chimpanzee Sweetwater Sanctuary is also a delight. The sanctuary is a rescue for chimpanzees rescued from Central and West Africa.

  • Kenya Photographic Safari

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Matthys van Aswegen

Safari Travel Planner

Kenya is a highly photogenic country. The main point of interest for most people that want to go on a Kenya photography safari is the prodigious wildlife that inhabits the national parks and other reserves.

Landscapes are greenest in the wet season, and the sky is least hazy then too, but this can be a difficult time to travel as game drives and other activities are washed out by frequent storms.

tourists in a safari vehicle watch white-bearded wildebeest in the Masai Mara, Kenya, during the annual Great Migration.

For dedicated Kenya photography safari-goers, there are several advantages to staying in private concessions or reserves, such as those on the Laikipia Plateau and bordering the Masai Mara. These private reserves are relatively costly to visit.

Still, they tend to have better and more sympathetic guides, and the ability to drive off-road, combined with the lack of other tourist traffic, means you can stick longer with a good photographic subject, and usually get far closer to it, and line up better for amazing shots.

A photography holiday in Kenya

Wildlife photography requires faster and higher-magnification lenses than most other subjects. The ideal lens combination would be a zoom that goes up to 300 together with a fixed 400, with the fastest f-stop of 4, or better, 2.8.

Bring a beanbag upon which to rest your lens to minimize the risk of camera shake; to save weight, you can carry it empty to Kenya and fill it up with rice, beans, or similar after you arrive.

The Kenyan people are regarded as welcoming and friendly to tourists, credit: AFAR Media

Colourful traditional ethnic groups such as the Maasai, Samburu, and Turkana make for great subjects, but it’s essential to ask permission before photographing them on your photography safari holiday in Kenya.

Many people will refuse, while others will expect to be paid. A good option for photographing traditionally-attired people is to arrange a paid visit to a traditional village bordering the Maasai Mara or Samburu-Buffalo Springs. The Swahili people of the coast are also sensitive about being photographed, particularly the women, whose Islamic culture perceives it to be immodest.

Kenya Safari Photography Tour • November 2025

When you think of kenya, what comes to your mind.

Kenya – safari, seeing Masai Mara with the great migration, many wild animals, photography tours, and much more. Did you know that Kenya has 24 national parks, 15 national reserves, 6 marine parks, plus many private conservancies?

Each area of Kenya, be it north, east, west or south, have their own unique landscapes, fascinating wildlife, wonderful people, and excellent accommodations.

Our luxury safari photo tour in Kenya will take you to the southern part, to the beautiful and excellent National Parks of Tsavo East, Tsavo West, and Amboseli.

Kenya Safari Photography Tour Dates:

Safari Photo Tour Kenya

Why is tsavo east national park special.

  • Tsavo East National Park is nine times larger than the Masai Mara and still has an authentic wilderness feel.
  • Tsavo’s vast open plains are home to large herds of buffalos and elephants, along with lions, and many other animals, such as cheetah, giraffe, hippo, hyena, jackal, dwarf mongoose, zebra or leopard – just to name a few.
  • This park also includes species that only occur here, such as the strange yet beautiful gerenuk, also known as the giraffe antelope.
  • Tsavo East has an advantage over other parks as it is more “off the beaten path,” and you will not find the crowds of tourists that can happen in the Masai Mara. Here in Tsavo East, you can go on a game drive for hours and not see another safari vehicle.
  • This park’s other bonus points are the wide-open plains and the distinct red earth, making it easier to spot and photograph wildlife. The colors of the golden grasses and green bushes combined with the rich red soil can really make your photos pop and even more beautiful!

Tsavo East National Park

Where will we stay in tsavo east on this safari in kenya.

Our camp in Tsavo East National Park is special. It is located inside the park and open to the wilderness. The large and beautiful tented rooms look out to a fantastic waterhole that is a magnet for elephants and other wildlife. The camp also has a watchtower that offers excellent views of the waterhole and the surrounding plain.

From Tsavo East we will go to Tsavo West National Park.

Tsavo West National Park

Why is tsavo west special.

  • Even though this park shares the name with Tsavo East, its landscapes are completely different. Tsavo West National Park has more hilly geography with dramatic volcanic boulders and grassy valleys dotted with acacia trees.
  • The park is home to all the usual African wildlife . What is the typical wildlife? Well, such as lions , leopards, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, etc. There are also fascinating species such as the tiny Dik-Dik antelope, the chubby-looking rock hyrax, the critically endangered wild dog , and many bird species.

Early morning this leopard was strolling through the bush to find some prey. The animal went on an old termite hill to have a better overview of its territory.

Where will we stay in Tsavo West?

Our lodge in Tsavo West has large comfortable rooms and is located inside the park. This lodge has a main deck that boasts the best sunset views along with an amazing view of a very busy waterhole, frequented day and night by many different animals.

After Tsavo West we will go to Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli National Park

Why is amboseli special.

  • Amboseli National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic parks , with the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro presiding in the background and home to some of Africa’s last remaining “Big Tuskers .” It is a true privilege to be able to see and photograph these majestic elephants with the longest tusks.
  • Amboseli National Park is one of the few places in Africa where you can still see large herds of elephants of more than 20 elephants.
  • It is also home to lions, buffalos, cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, amongst all the other very varied wild animals that roam this truly incredible park.
  • If we are lucky, we might even get a glimpse of the rare black serval!

These two giraffes create an archway for a little zebra foal. The mother and herd of the zebra were to the right side grazing.

Where will we stay in Amboseli National Park?

Our lodge in Amboseli is located inside the park in one of the most wildlife-rich areas of Amboseli. That location gives us the advantage of having wildlife on our doorstep!

We will visit the Nairobi National Park on our last day in Kenya. This is a unique park as it’s the only protected area globally with such a large variety of wildlife so close to a capital city.

Here you can expect to see and get amazing photos of wildlife in the wide-open plains with the Nairobi skyline in the background.

Quick Enquiry

Quick enquiry.

Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve is one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations – home to iconic African wildlife including African Elephant, Masai Giraffe, Lion, Leopard and Cheetah, along with more than 450 species of bird. This 10-day holiday includes a 7-night stay at Mlima Cottage, a private residence located near the northern border of the reserve, where we will have a safari vehicles for our group of 4 (maximum). We will enjoy game drives in the early morning and late afternoon, when soft light is optimal for photography, and rest back at the camp during the heat of the day. Each evening, we will return to the camp after sunset to enjoy dinner, share stories, and download our photos for reviewing and editing. Throughout our stay we will be hosted and guided by expert naturalist and wildlife photographer, John Haskew, who has spent more than 10 years living and working in East Africa.

  • Stay at Mlima Cottage, a private residence
  • Hosted and guided by expert naturalist and wildlife photographer, John Haskew
  • Mlima Cottage is situated adjacent to prime Leopard and Lion territories
  • Birds include Ostrich, Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbills and elegant Secretary Birds
  • Masai Giraffe, African Elephant, Burchell’s Zebra, Eland Topi and Blue Wildebeest all commonly seen

Grade A. This is a traditional African safari, and therefore suitable for anyone of any age, without any great necessity for extreme fitness.

The Masai Mara in Kenya is one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations – home to iconic African wildlife including the big cats (Lion, Leopard and Cheetah) as well as browsing and grazing animals including Masai Giraffe, African Elephant, Hippopotamus, Burchell's Zebra, Eland, Topi, Wildebeest, and many, many more. Smaller mammals include Black-backed Jackal, Bat-eared Fox, Warthog and Serval. The Mara is also home to more than 450 bird species including the largest of all birds - the Ostrich - and the largest flying bird – the Kori Bustard. Huge Ground Hornbills and elegant Secretary Birds stride across the grasslands along with Grey Crowned Crane and smaller species such as Temminck's Coursers, Wattled Lapwing, Rosy-breasted Longclaw, Yellow-shouldered Widowbird and Capped Wheatear. Lone bushes or dead trees provide lookout perches for a variety of bee-eaters and rollers, including the beautiful Northern Carmine Bee-eater, whilst above them soar Martial Eagles, Lappet-faced, African White-backed, Hooded and Ruppell's Vultures, the latter four always on the lookout for a recent kill. Our photographic safari is scheduled in the ‘shoulder’ season in the Mara, when the number of vehicles is less than peak season but with still excellent opportunities to photograph the wildlife and resident big cats.

After a flight to Nairobi and an overnight stop, we take the short flight down to the Mara where we will spend seven nights at Mlima Cottage, a private residence located on the northern border of the main reserve and immediately adjacent to prime leopard and lion territories. Our typical day will target the early morning and late afternoon, when encounters with wildlife are most likely and soft light is optimal for photography. There will be an emphasis on the big cats, but also plenty of opportunities to photograph a wide range of species. We will be flexible during the day to adapt to the activity of the wildlife and photographic opportunities; depending on our preferences, we can stay out all day or return to the cottage during the heat of the midday sun for lunch and to rest. We will resume our safari in the mid-afternoon, staying out until sunset, again the optimal time for observing and photographing wildlife behaviour. We return to base after sunset to relax for the evening dinner and to share stories. The cottage has facilities to charge batteries and download photographs to your computer for reviewing and editing.

Throughout our stay at Mlima Cottage we will be hosted and guided by expert naturalist and wildlife photographer, John Haskew, who has spent more than ten years living and working in East Africa.

Outline Itinerary

What's included.

We spend the first night at a comfortable hotel in Nairobi, followed by 7 nights at Mlima Cottage. This private residence is situated on the northern border of the Masai Mara Reserve, in a prime location for wildlife viewing, close to renowned leopard and lion territories.

All food is included in the price of the tour.

This was a superb trip. John was a great trip leader. He has the unique mix of great local knowledge of the area and wildlife along with huge photographic expertise which he was wager to educate us on. He was good humoured and dealt with the mix of people well. The two guides were equally excellent, often managing to find great photo opportunities when other safari vehicles seemed to be failing. The ability to get so close to so many different animals and seeing them interact with one another was truly magical. I.S., Cambridgeshire, Nov '21
John is not only a great source of guidance with the technical side of photography, but his knowledge, experience and fieldcraft really allowed us to focus on taking photographs in great light and/or capturing photographs of the animals’ behaviour. Not only that, he was also able to support everyone’s learning, despite us all having different abilities and interests, and he made sure we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in the process. The staff at Mara Olapa Camp and the food and accommodation were nothing short of a constant joy. The drivers/guides were some of the best I have met. It was a really enjoyable, fun week of constant highlights; the wildlife and photography opportunities were second to none. Everything about the trip was brilliant - I have travelled with Naturetrek many times now and have always enjoyed my trips - but this one was really special. L.H., Renfrewshire, Nov '21

African Photo Safaris for the Adventurous Traveler

An African photo safari is a large investment. Piper Mackay thoroughly understands this because she has been roaming Africa’s wilds, photographing remote tribes and wildlife for nearly two decades. From all her years of logistical experience with boots on the ground and a large network of partners, each itinerary is handcrafted with unparalleled photographic opportunities and immeasurable experiences.

TESTIMONIALS

Piper Mackay truly deserves recognition as an outstanding photo safari leader. She is dedicated to doing an outstanding job and I have never seen anyone work as hard as she does to ensure you have a memorable photo safari experience. Would I travel with her again? Absolutely. Would I recommend you go on one of her trips. Yes – without reservation. It is quite obvious she loves what she does and she cares very deeply that you have a memorable experience on her trips. – GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI

If you travel with Piper on one of her photo tours, there will never be a dull moment.  Piper is truly passionate about Africa, about her work, and about ensuring that her clients have a memorable experience.  I am not long back from a trip with Piper to the spectacular Gerewol festival in Chad. As always, Piper had arranged a truly unforgettable trip.  From witnessing the arrival of the nomadic Wodaabe tribe members, to watching the men dance and listening to their hypnotic chant, I will treasure my photographic memories for many years to come – GEREWOL FESTIVAL

The Signature African Safari was my first wildlife photo tour. Piper did not disappoint. As the tour proceeded, she kept exceeding my expectations. Her drivers are excellent. Most importantly, they are also accomplished photographers and they know where to position the vehicles for the best light and the best photographs. Also, early in the tour, I requested a review of my images with Piper and she happily obliged. Her inputs were very helpful and my photos showed a marked improvement as the tour progressed. – SIGNATURE SAFARI AFRICA

Day 1: Arrive Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – Nairobi.

Meet and greet on arrival at the airport. You will be met and transferred to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay at Hilton Nairobi Hotel.

Day 2: Nairobi – Umani Springs Chyulu Hills

Umani Springs is a small luxury bush home at the eastern foot of the Chyulu Hills, within Kibwezi Forest. The property belongs to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and is primarily reserved for DSWT elephant orphan “foster parents.” The camp was designed to facilitate personal and educational visits for foster parents to see their orphans (or ex-orphans) after they leave the Nairobi nursery an come to the Tsavo conservation area for their  reintroduction process into the wild. None of the orphan elephants are ever tamed nor trained and all are reintroduced within 3 years. During your stay, visitors can tour the orphan’s stockades, watch their midday mud bath, feedings and more. Surrounding the lodge are lush grounds with two waterholes and a salt lick which frequently draws elephants and birds. The property can accommodate ten people total. Overnight Umani Springs

Day 3: Umani Springs – Amboseli National Park

Drive to Amboseli National Park, which is at the foot of the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro. On arrival to Amboseli National Park, we will do a game drive and then head to our lodge, surrounded by herds of elephants and buffaloes. From our lodge we will be able to see Mount Kilimanjaro peeking through the clouds in the early mornings and late evenings. Overnight Ol Tukai Lodge

Day 4 & Day 5: Amboseli National Park

An early morning game drive in this beautiful national park will get your close to large herds of elephants. After lunch, we will take an afternoon game drive to witness the crossings of the elephants from the swamps to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro for overnight foraging. Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Natuer lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands, sulphur springs, savannah and woodlands. Overnight Ot Tukai Lodge.

kenya photo safari tours

Day 6: Amboseli – Lake Naivasha including afternoon boat ride & Elsamere visit

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Kenya section of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, and is located northwest of Nairobi. At 1,890 meters (6,200 ft) aloe sea level, the lae is at the highest point in the Kenya rift and is set in a complex geological combination if volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a much larger Pleistocene era lake. Lake Naivasha is home to a wide variety of wildlife including a sizable population of hippos which usually visit the property during their nightly forays for food. Amazingly agile for their bulk, hippos are good climbers and leave the water each night to graze on grass, then return to the water before dawn. Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake, also has a healthy fish population such as black bass, tilapia and crayfish which attract a wide variety of fish-eating birds such as the long-tailed and great cormorants, fish eagles, pelicans, and various types of kingfishers. On 60 hectares (148 acres) of grassland surrounded by trees and set among giraffes and waterbucks, Naivasha Sopa Lodge is a collection of brick and wood makuti cottages on the shore.

Elsamere is the original home to Joy and George Adamson. Their story of raising an orphan lion cub in the 1950s and her subsequent release into the African bush is one of the great conservation stories of all time. Joy’s captivating book about Elsa the lioness, entitled Born Free, was published by Harvill Press in 1960 and soon received international acclaim. In the years which followed, Joy published sequels to Born Free and more books about her hand-reared cheetah Pippa and leopard Penny. In 1966 Born Free became a movie starring husband-and-wife actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. Filmed in the Kenya bush over the course of many months, it soon became a worldwide hit. As Joy’s fame as a conservationist grew, so did her fortune. But neither she nor George had any personal interest in money. Royalties from books and films were paid into a new charity which Joy called the Elsa Wild Animal Appeal, and has since become The Elsa Conservation Trust. George and  Joy each left their entire estates including Elsamere, Joy’s house on Lake Naivasha, to the Elsa Conservation Trust. During the last forty years the trust has donated millions of dollars to wildlife education and conservation projects, large and small, helping to create the famous Kenyan parks and reserves at Meru, Samburu, Shaba, Kora, Hell’s Gate and also the Centre for Education in Sustainability at Elsamere. Today, the principal activities and aims are to further worldwide conservation education, particularly in East Africa. Today, the Elsa Conservation Trust continues its lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation. Together the Adamsons revolutionized our attitudes to wild animals and warned the world that unless it protects their habitats, many of the most magnificent species would be extinct there within a few decades.

Day 7:  Lake Naivasha – Maasai Mara National Reserve

After and early morning breakfast, we will drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, arriving at lunchtime and then go for an afternoon game drive. Maasai Mara is world-renowned for its exceptional population of cats, including Maasai lions, African leopards and Tanzanian cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebras, Thomson’s gazelles, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration. Overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 8: Maasai Mara National Reserve

When it was originally established in 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary, the Maasai Mara covered only 520 square kilometers (200 sq miles) of the current area, including the Mara Triangle. The area was extended to the east in 1961 to cover 1,821 km (703 sq miles) and converted to a game reserve. Hippopotami and crocodiles are found in large groups in the Mara and Talk Rivers. Leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes can also be found in the reserve. All members of the “Big Five,” (lion, leopard, elephant, cape buffalo and rhinoceros) are found here. Antelopes can be found, including Grant’s gazelles, impalas, duikers and Coke’s hartebeests. The plains are also home to the Maasai giraffe, with its’ distinctive, irregular and jagged patterns that extend to the hooves. More than 470 species of birds have been identified in the park, many of which are migrants, with almost 60 species being raptors. Birds that call this area home for at least part of the year include vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested eagles, African pygmy falcons and the lilac-breasted roller, which is the national bird of Kenya. Overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 9: Maasai Mara National Reserve

Morning, afternoon and evening game drives will be taken in specially adapted open safari vehicles. We will visit the Maasai people, a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known of African ethnic groups due to their living near many of the game parks of East Africa. Their language is called Mad and it is estimated that one million Maasai people live in both Kenya and Tanzania. Shuka is the Maasai word for sheets traditionally worn wrapped around the body, one over each shoulder, the a third over the top of the. These are typically red in color and often worn with some other colors or patterns, such as plaid. Red is the preferred color due to its meaning in Maasai culture of warrior, blood and bravery. During our time on the Maasai Mara, we will also take a sunrise hot air balloon ride to view wildlife, followed by a morning breakfast on the plains. Overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 10: Maasai Mara National Reserve

We will continue with morning, afternoon and evening game drives to view wildlife and get the best photographic opportunities while the light is best. Overnight Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 11: Maasai Mara – Nairobi

This morning we will take a short flight to Nairobi. Arrival for lunch and an afternoon visit to the National Museum of Kenya. Afterwards, we will have day use of the hotel to freshen up and pack. Since this is your final day, we will have an early dinner and later transfer you to the airport to catch your flight home from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. End of Tour.
