Krapf’s Family-Oriented Culture Endures With School Bus Company Acquisition

When Krapf School Bus acquired Birnie Bus in June , the company made one of its most significant expansions to date. The acquisition adds about 1,325 employees and about 875 vehicles, according to Blake Krapf, president and CEO of the Krapf Group, the parent company of Krapf School Bus. For Blake, the decision to acquire Birnie Bus was cultural, as much as it was financial. “When we look at opportunities, we are interested in making sure that it’s the right cultural fit,” he says. “While it’s important to make sure that an acquisition is a sound business decision, Krapf School Bus is focused on doing so while maintaining its core values.”

Importance of Shared Values

In determining whether an acquisition opportunity would be a good fit for the company, Blake says Krapf looks for an organization that shares similar goals, values, a commitment to high-quality service, and a dedication to providing safe service. A good management team and consistently high-performing drivers are also key factors. It is precisely those characteristics that made Birnie Bus an ideal fit for Krapf. “They have a strong management team. They have an excellent reputation for safety and service. They have actively supported the industry associations for the improvement of the overall industry,” Blake says. “Those are all things we’ve done here at Krapf as well, so really it merges two very similar profiles and [enables us] to further improve on all of those things that the two companies have been doing independently.” One of the company’s biggest challenges in the expansion is keeping Krapf operating like a family business, Blake says, which is why the company looked toward Birnie Bus, which has been run by President and CEO Tim Birnie, as well as his father, Martin K. Birnie. “[Tim Birnie] was really a one-man show for a huge business,” says Dale Krapf, chairman of the board for the Krapf Group, and Blake’s father. “But he didn’t want to sell that business to someone who was just going to roll that over and sell it to the next big conglomerate that comes down the road two or three years from now. He wanted to sell it to someone who had the same family spirit and family values that we had.” Those Krapf values, according to Dale, are “commitment, open communication, respecting others, and excellent service.” The values were first established by his parents after founding the company. Krapf’s familial values ring true with Vera Brooks, a school bus driver, examiner, and instructor for Krapf School Bus. Brooks, who has worked for the company for 37 years, started out as a driver. Despite nearly 40 years of growth and expansion, employees still see members of the Krapf family onsite. “I work in different locations and at any given time, you can see one of the owners coming by and talking and saying hi,” Brooks says. “They’ll even talk to new hires, too. They might not know them by name, but they’ll say hi to them and talk to them, just like a coworker.” For Blake, seeking the right cultural fit for Krapf is also a way to prepare for the future. Family-owned companies with a tight-knit culture are better suited to take on future changes in the industry. “Even with this acquisition, we’re not a large corporation. We’re still a family-owned, hands-on management,” he says. “Certainly there’s a lot of new technology in our industry, and customers’ expectations have changed rapidly in accordance with technological developments, so we have the ability to recognize that and adapt quickly.” Family-owned companies such as these two are also able to make changes and adapt to fit the needs of their customers and their employees without as much concern for stockholders or quarterly stock reports, Blake says.

George Krapf Jr. and Sons, as the company was first known, was founded in 1942, beginning with only two buses in operation. Pictured here is George Krapf Jr. around 1941.

Beyond sharing similar values, both companies have enjoyed a similar longevity, with Birnie Bus starting 70 years ago in 1947 and Krapf celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. George Krapf Jr. and Sons was founded in 1942, beginning with only two buses in operation, shuttling students to and from the Downingtown, Pennsylvania, school district. George’s business was located in the heart of Chester County, which was gradually transforming from what was once primarily rural farmland to a suburban area. Over the next 50 years, as the area developed and the school systems evolved to keep pace, Krapf School Bus grew along with the area. The company began its school bus services to accommodate the modernization of schools that occurred across the country, as schools transitioned from being single classrooms that sometimes housed all 12 grades, to the high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools that are present today, according to Dale. By 1950, the number of school buses that the company operated grew to about eight to 10. George’s business acumen, his strong commitment to excellence, and the addition of his two sons to the business afforded the company the ability to position itself to handle that steady growth, according to Blake.   In 1996, the company began expanding beyond the local confines of its neighboring school districts, winning bids that allowed its fleet to grow to 500 or 600 buses, Dale says. Now, with the acquisition of Birnie Bus, Krapf School Bus will operate a total of 2,500 school buses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, and Virginia. Krapf School Bus will take over more than 70 contracts with school districts and preschools as well.

Because Birnie Bus shares similar goals, values, and a dedication to providing safe, high-quality service, it was an ideal acquisition for Krapf. Shown here is Rafik Avdic, who has been a school bus driver at Birnie Bus since 2002.

After the acquisition and anniversary celebration, the main goal of Krapf School Bus is simply to keep offering the same level of service for the next 75 years. Whatever future opportunities lie in wait for Krapf, the approach in acquiring Birnie Bus is the framework for the company’s growth, Blake says. “We don’t have a goal as far as X number of buses or X number of locations or annual revenue. In the business world, people might say that that’s crazy, but that’s not how we approach it,” he adds. “Can we continue to provide high quality and treat our employees the way we should and treat our customers the way we should? If we can do all those things, then we look at the financial conditions.”

We hired 2 Krapf school buses for our wedding night. From the beginning, we specified that we wanted the buses to make continuous rounds between our venue and the hotel. Arielle assured us that would not be a problem. She requested that we provide her with exact times for when we wanted each bus at each place, so there was no confusion among the drivers. A schedule was made, approved by Arielle, and it was included in our contract. My grandparents, who are elderly, wanted to leave early. During our wedding night, we were told that my grandparents had been waiting for a bus to come for an hour. My husband and I left our wedding to help look for the buses (which should have rounded at least once, if not twice in that time frame). I finally saw them parked in the vary back of the parking lot, hidden past all the cars, completely turned off, with no lights on. My husband had to run across the entire parking lot and knock on the window of a bus to alert the drivers (who were both in the same bus, texting on their phones) that we had guests waiting to go back. This was incredibly upsetting not only for us but for my grandparents as well. After our honeymoon, we decided to reach out to Krapf to explain our situation and request a partial refund of our payment. After Krapf claimed the buses were rounding the rest of the night (just not during that particular time frame), we requested GPS info to prove it. They were unable to provide this. We provided receipts of our conversations with Arielle, plus our signed contract (which had the time of each stop listed exactly as agreed upon), along with confirmation from our venue that nobody instructed the buses to park in the back. Despite the fact that Krapf violated our contract, caused stress on our wedding night, and provided 2 hours out of the 8 hours of service we paid for, the company is offering an insulting refund that amounts to less than 15% of the total we paid. At this point, it is not about the money (it never was). Krapf clearly does not take their customers seriously and does not value customer service. Contracts do not mean anything to them. I urge you to look elsewhere when considering transportation for your wedding.

Krapf Route A is a joke. Yet again I've been waiting for over 30 minutes for it. So glad o don't rely on it on a daily basis or to get to work. What a joke!

We selected Krapfs Coaches to provide shuttle bus services for our wedding guests between the hotel and the reception venue in May 2014. We selected them based off of their online reviews; however the service we received was terrible. The driver was scheduled to arrive at the hotel at 4:50pm and at 4:45pm we received a call from the driver saying that he was stuck in traffic on I-76. The reception started at 5:30pm, however the driver did not arrive until 5:45pm. To make matters worse, the bus' AC was not working, so the driver had opened numerous windows to keep the bus cool. This created another problem as there had been scattered storms that day so many of the seats were wet. The guests who had relied on the bus did not arrive to the reception until 6:10pm, missing most of the cocktail hour. As if the situation could not get worse, at the end of the evening the driver did not want to make multiple trips, as indicated in our contract, to transport the guests he had shuttled earlier in the evening plus the wedding party (including my bride and myself). We let the driver leave with the guests, and had a couple of family members transport the wedding party back to the hotel. Krapf's Coaches' website promises a meticulously maintained, modern fleet with professional drivers. Unfortunately we received neither a meticulously maintained vehicle nor a professional driver. Being late due to traffic on I-76 is no excuse as there is regularly traffic on that road. Another route should have been taken or the driver should have allowed for more travel time. Regarding the vehicle, if the AC was not working they should have used another vehicle that was working properly. After the wedding I had a conversation with one of their managers. To Krapf's credit, everyone I spoke with in their sales/management office was courteous and professional. After informing them of the service we received, they issued a 50% refund, which was appreciated however it could not make up for the terrible service nor the frustration and stress we experienced on what is supposed to be one of the happiest days of our lives.

Photo of Eli M.

I give them two stars only because our wedding guests arrived and returned home safely (hey, that's important!). Beyond that, our experience with Krapf's was not good. The communication between the sales/account manager, dispatch, and the drivers was a total mess, which lead to them changing the story of how long they needed for a round trip over and over and over again, literally up to the day before our wedding. The second busses were then very late for our drop-off and pick-up. If you need to go with them, be extremely diligent about making sure they are communicating amongst themselves about all the important details or it could create a lot of unnecessary headaches. We still had an amazing wedding, but our experience dealing with Krapf's did not help the cause.

Photo of Carol E.

They were FABULOUS! We used Krapf's to provide transportation for my son's wedding this past weekend in Philadelphia. We had a 31 passenger "shuttle" for family and bridal party and a 54 passenger coach for our wedding guests to/from the hotel and church, and then to/from hotel and reception venue (3 return trips). I messed up the time for the 2nd return trip, but when I called the driver in a panic shortly after he left, he very calmly said, no problem, I'll be right back. Both vehicles were spotless and not having to individually deal with Philadelphia traffic on I-76 was a tremendous treat for our guests! I had no problem with communications - in fact they were the MOST responsive when I first reached out to them 8 months ahead of time! I changed my mind a few times during those 8 months and they were very accommodating throughout it all! Thanks for making our day GREAT!

Photo of Kathleen M.

Contracted them to supply a school bus to transport guests from the hotel to the venue for my son's wedding. First run on time, second run was 15 minutes late with no explanation-delayed the start of the ceremony waiting for guests to arrive. End of night - second/last run - mother of groom screaming after the bus to stop, car in the lot beeping horn and flashing lights to get drivers attention, passenger on bus asking driver to stop...... totally ignored all requests.

We recommend at least two to three days to explore Moscow at a relaxed pace and cover most of its prominent attractions while enjoying shopping and local cuisine.

Q: What is the validity of the ticket?

There are several ticket options available to you, depending on your length of stay. Each bus tour will have validity from 24, 36, 48 to 72 hours. And the great thing is you can plan ahead as the vouchers are valid anywhere between 6 months to 1 year and can be used at any point during that period. Check the product page or bus tour operator for complete details.

Q: Where can I find a list of all the stops and a map of the various Moscow hop-on hop-off tour routes?

You can visit the relevant product page and check the Useful Downloads section to find the latest information as routes, stops, and timings change frequently.
