Chilean Patagonia offers some of South America's most incredible landscapes . The Tierra del Fuego archipelago is a must-visit destination here. Would not agree that all the countries in Latin America are safe to visit. Colombia for example is level 3 reconsider travel – many trouists are being found dead with their bank accounts having been emptied beforehand. Express kidnappings are also becoming more common unfortunately in latin america.

Latin America is a rich, vibrant, diverse region, welcoming millions of international tourists each year. It encompasses 33 countries and nearly 13% of the Earth’s total land area. The best part? There’s SO much to discover here and if you’re planning to visit for the first time, the sheer amount of information can actually be overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve done most of the research for you and narrowed down a list of some of the best places to visit in Latin America, to make your trip planning easier. H ere are the 12 best places to visit in Latin America this year…

12. Belize City, Belize

Belize City is a port city in Central American Belize and one of the most loved Latin America travel destinations. It’s also the historical capital of the nation and part of its charm comes from its colonial houses, sailboats from Haulover Creek, as well as its lively shopping areas.

Love street markets? Take a walk through the centre, where you’ll see street hawkers selling everything from handmade jewellery, wood carvings and other souvenirs. And if you’re a nature lover, visit the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides refuge for thousands of migratory and resident birds. We also recommend stopping by the Community Baboon Sanctuary, around 30 miles away from the city, in a small Kriol village.

11. Yucatan Peninsula

The Yucatan Peninsula is one of the most popular beach destinations in Latin America, bringing in millions of sun-seeking tourists each year. The area encapsulates parts of Belize and Guatemala, as well as three separate Mexican states: Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche.

What is the Yucatan Peninsula known for? 

The Yucatan Peninsula is best known for being the most important Mayan archeological site in Mexico, the Las Coloradas pink lakes, which are used for industrial-scale sea-salt production and of course the vibrant party scene in Cancun. If you love all things wellness and yoga, add a visit to Tulum to your list – you can take your pick of eco hotels and the beaches have a laidback party vibe.

10. Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a famous Spanish colonial city in Central America, surrounded by volcanoes. While the small city was mainly destroyed by earthquakes in the 17th century, a large portion of it was rebuilt and many historical buildings have since been renovated.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1979 because of its living traces of Spanish culture, its Baroque-style architecture, as well as its many Christian churches and monasteries.

Is Antigua Guatemala worth visiting? 

With its stunning architecture, cobbled streets, rich history and unique charm, this city is well worth a visit. You can learn to salsa, find out about colonial history or check out the city from Cerro de la Cruz.

Yucatan Highlights

Ah, Rio de Janeiro, the home of samba, bossa nova music, incredible beaches and the inspiration of songs worldwide. How could we not include it in this list?

There are so many exciting things to see and do in Rio de Janeiro, but probably the best ones to include on your list are: Tijuca National Park, a day-trip to Ipanema Beach, taking a cable car up to Sugar Loaf Mountain and dancing the night away in Lapa, one of the most effervescent neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. A must-see is the Christ the Redeemer statue. This iconic landmark is also considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We couldn’t agree more.

8. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni in southwest Bolivia is currently the largest salt flat in the world, also known for its crowds of pink flamingos. Stretching over more than 4,000 square miles of the Altiplano, it’s definitely one of the most important places to visit in South America.

How to get to Salar de Uyuni

There are multiple options available for reaching the Bolivian salt flats. The most common means of transport are bus, train or plane to Uyuni – the nearest town to the salt flats’ location. If you’re coming from Argentina, the best starting point is Tupiza, which is approximately 200km away from Uyuni. If you’re traveling with a tour operator, your tour manager will most likely drive you to the border, after which a Bolivian operator would take over the tour.  

What’s there to do at Salar de Uyuni?

7. Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Our 7th spot on our best places to visit in Latin America list is taken by Torres del Paine National Park in Chile’s Patagonia region. The beautiful landscapes attract travel photographers from around the world, thanks to the imposing glaciers and stunning sunsets the lagoon.

Photographers aren’t the only ones interested in this natural beauty, though. With so many experiences and activities, this is the perfect place for adventure-seekers. From hiking to boating and horseback riding, this amazing park has a little bit of everything for everyone.

How much does it cost to get into Torres del Paine?

Starting from January 1, 2020, the entrance fee for a foreign adult is CLP $25,000, the entrance fee for a foreign teenager (12-17 years old) is CLP $12,500 and a ticket to stay more than 3 days for foreigners is CLP $35,000. You won’t find ATMs at the entrance of Torres del Paine Park and they don’t accept credit cards / debit cards, which means you’ll need to bring cash with you.

How to get to Torres del Paine… 

The easiest way to reach Torres del Paine is to fly from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, and from there either take a bus or rent a car to Puerto Natales. The entire journey should take around 4.5 hours.

6. the galapagos islands.

This volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean isn’t just one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ecuador, it’s also one of the most important destinations for wildlife sightings.  The Galapagos’ fame comes from Charles Darwin, who visited the islands in 1835. His observations about the species he discovered inspired his theory of evolution. No big deal.

The birth of the Galapagos islands came from volcanic upheavals which erupted from the bottom of the sea. The entire archipelago consists of 19 islands and a number of islets and rocks which cover an area of around 17,000 square miles across the ocean. Since 1959, Galapagos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Ecuador’s first national park, bringing in roughly 250,000 tourists each year, so be sure to book your trip in advance!

5. The Sacred Valley, Peru

Sacred Valley is one of the most-visited regions of Peru and if you haven’t added it to your travel checklist yet, then you need to rectify the situation ASAP.  It’s buzzing with Incan history, ancient ruins and unique natural landscapes, all of which contribute to its mystery and charm.

3. iguazu falls, argentina & brazil.

Iguazú Falls or Iguaçu Falls are a set of waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. This colossal display of nature brings around 1 million visitors each year – it’s formed of 275 waterfalls, spanning an area of approximately 2.7 kilometers. 

Is Iguazu Falls bigger than Niagara Falls? 

Yes, IIguazu Falls is significantly larger than Niagara Falls and is also the largest waterfall system in the world. It has the highest annual average flow and is twice as wide as Niagara Falls. 

When is the best time to visit Iguazu Falls?

You can visit Iguazu Falls all year round, however t he best time to go is during mid-season, meaning July-October and February-April, when the weather is the most mild and there aren’t as many tourists around.

2. Monteverde, Costa Rica

Monteverde is a natural beauty in Puntaneras, Costa Rica and one of the country’s biggest ecotourism destinations.  One of the reasons why Monteverde is so famous is because of its incredible biodiversity – it’s home to some of the most magical rainforests in the world, plus there are so many beautiful nature reserves. Machu Picchu is one of the most important heritage sites in the world (the site of an ancient Inca city), situated in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru. It HAD to make the number one spot on our best places to visit in Latin America list. 

This magnificent site sits at an elevation of 7,710 feet (2,350 metres) between two sharp mountain peaks: Machu Picchu (‘Old Peak’) and Huayna Picchu (‘New Peak’).

The main access point is Cusco. From there, tourists need to reach Aguas Calientes, which is accessible either by trek, train or a combination of bus and walking. If you’re interested in booking a trip there, it’s important to note that tickets must be purchased in advance and are usually included in the cost of your tour or trek.

The first city I visited was Buenos Aires, and it immediately stole my heart — it is arguably one of the best cities on the continent . Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to explore beyond Argentina, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay; Peru will be added to that list in the coming months.

South America has unlimited things to offer, from beautiful beaches and mountainside villages to world-class cuisine and two of the New 7 Wonders of the World . With the help of Elisban Huarancca, an official tourism guide in Peru , Eva Castro, owner of Creo Ecolodge Jardin Project in Antioquia, Colombia, and Alexander Balardjischvili, CEO of C2Rio Tours & Travel , we’ve compiled a list of the 25 best places to visit in South America.

Jardín, Antioquia, Colombia

Jardín is a small town a few hours south of Medellín with colonial architecture, beautiful scenery, and lots to do. Castro of Creo Ecolodge, where I stayed during my trip to Jardín, gave plenty of recommendations for things to do while you’re in town. Take a tour of Cueva del Esplendor, or Cave of Splendor, where you'll find a beautiful waterfall, or head to a nearby coffee farm to learn how Colombian coffee is produced. My favorite is Cafe Historias , which has some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted.  Castro says the best time of year to visit is August and September when there are very few travelers. This is also when the annual Jardin Film Festival takes place. It gets much busier in town from December through April, Castro says.

Cocora Valley, Salento, Colombia

Due west of Bogota is Cocora Valley, one of Colombia's most famous hiking destinations. You can take a day trip from the nearby town of Salento or do a multi-day hike throughout the valley. There are campsites available for use if you choose to spend the night looking at the stars. It’s famous for having the tallest palm trees in the world, which stand at over 195 feet tall and can live up to 200 years. The almost oversaturated green colors of the hills are stunning. Castro highly recommends going at "golden hour" — early in the morning or late in the afternoon — for the best views.

The Lost City, Magdalena, Colombia

The Lost City, or Ciudad Perdida in Spanish, is located near Santa Marta in northern Colombia. It’s estimated to have been founded in the 8th or 9th centuries, making it hundreds of years older than Machu Picchu. It was home to anywhere between 1,400 to 3,000 people and about 170 terraces, with apparent spaces for living, working, and religious practice. You’ll have to do a three- to six-day trek with a tour company to get there. On the way, you will see rare native plants and wildlife, which is an adventure in itself. 

The Rock of Guatapé, Guatapé, Colombia

Guatapé is a town in northern Colombia, directly east of Medellín, and it’s famous for The Rock of Guatapé, which is reached via more 740 steps. At the end of your climb, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the town and different islands in Guatapé Lake. The town is reachable via a bus ride that's less than two hours from Medellín, making it a perfect weekend trip.  “The people here are more welcoming and warm,” says Castro. “When you are walking, you can find many smiling faces... It’s part of our culture.”

San Rafael, Antioqua, Colombia

San Rafael is excellent “if you really want to have the deepest connection with yourself and with nature,” says Castro. She recommends Vanadurga Ashram , a yoga sanctuary, if you want to practice yoga while you're here. “These places are really magical, and you can learn how to change your perspective," Castro adds.

San Rafael is known for its natural beauty, including mountains, waterfalls, and rivers. You can bird watch, hike, or simply soak in nature. “People want to come to have an inner journey,” says Castro. “If that’s your goal — to find out something inside of you — I’d recommend places like San Rafael.”

Cusco, Peru

If you are interested in Inca ruins, Cusco is the perfect place. Churches, museums, and winding streets here will leave you charmed. “Travelers to Peru should know that they will face a diverse and colorful culture, with very warm and very friendly people,” says Huarancca. “Also, understand that they will face different flavors that will help them experience every second of their trip.” Cusco makes a great starting point to reach Machu Picchu. Many travelers spend a few days here exploring and acclimating to the 11,150-foot elevation. (In comparison, Denver has an elevation of 5,280 feet.)

Arguably one of the most famous places in the world, Machu Picchu is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The site was initially an Inca citadel, likely built in the 1450s and often called “The Lost City of the Incas.” Machu Picchu is about 50 miles from Cusco; from there, you’ll take a train to Aguas Calientes and then a bus to the site. You cannot visit without a tour guide, so make reservations well in advance.  “The visit to Machu Picchu can be all year round; different climatic factors help to understand the mysterious nature of Machu Picchu,” says Huarancca. “But if you are looking for dates with little rain, it is well suited from April to the end of October.”

Lake Titicaca, Peru

Lake Titicaca is the largest of South America's freshwater lakes, as well as the world's highest navigable lake. It’s an estimated three million years old, and there are man-made islands constructed of layers of tortora roots and reeds. The number of islands varies at any given time but is usually somewhere between f40 to 60. You will have some of the best views in the Andes from this place, and it is extremely important to Peruvian and Bolivian indigenous communities.

Close to Cusco in the Andes Mountains is Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain because of the colorful stripes on display year-round. The colors result from different mineral layers that were combined with melted ice to create rows of reds, yellows, purples, and greens.

The Amazon Rainforest, Peru

The Amazon Rainforest spans eight countries and is almost 2.6 million square miles in size. You can visit the Peruvian Amazon from three areas: Manu National Park, Tambopata Province, and the city of Iquitos. Each provides something unique to tourists. The best option depends on what you want to see, how much time you can spend, and your budget.  “The only recommendation I can give to international travelers is to make reservations in advance and have good information about the places you will visit,” says Huarancca. “It is necessary to find out the type of food, drinks, and traditions that place has.”

Huacachina, Peru

Huarancca recommends visiting Huacachina, “a small oasis in the middle of the desert.” Located south of Lima and near the city of Ica, Huacachina is a desert village complete with rolling sand dunes on all sides. You can't swim in Huacachina Lagoon, but you can rent paddle boats to glide across the water. It’s the only natural oasis in all of South America, formed by underground aquifers.

Colca Canyon, Peru

Colca Canyon is another tourist attraction in Peru that you should not miss, according to Huarancca. It’s one of the world’s deepest canyons (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon) and you can take a day trip from Arequipa to see it or a multi-day trek for the most spectacular views. Either way you're likely to see plenty of native wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia

Bolivia is home to the largest salt flat in the world, originally a prehistoric lake that went dry. Now Uyuni Salt Flat is around 4,200 square miles of striking white salt and rock formations. If you visit between December and April, which is the rainy season, you may see bright pink flamingos. Many people who have visited when water is on the ground describe the experience as walking on a cloud, since the sky is reflected in the water. Book a room at Kachi Lodge , which is set right on the flat, for a very special stay.

Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Christ the Redeemer is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a must-see for anyone heading to Brazil. The statue of Jesus stands almost 125 feet tall and looks over Rio de Janeiro . When visiting the marvel, you can expect phenomenal views of the city. Balardjischvili recommends taking the train to see the statue and to book that ticket in advance.

Pantanal Wetland, Brazil

Measuring more than 40 million acres, Pantanal Wetland is the biggest wetland on Earth. Jaguars and crocodiles are just two of its residents — with more than 4,700 plant and animal species, it’s one of the most biodiverse destinations on the planet. Balardjischvili recommends “bringing insect repellent, a light raincoat, and a sweatshirt — and always hydrate.”

The Imperial City of Petropolis, Brazil

Petropolis is a mountain resort outside of Rio de Janeiro known for its palaces, architecture, and food. “Visit Petropolis on a guided tour to enjoy the historical aspect," Balardjischvili says. "Always book your tour on legalized companies with good reviews."

Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sugarloaf Mountain is a major landmark in Brazil, well known for the panoramic city views guests get at the top. The cable car system here opened in 1912; it was the first in Brazil and the third in the world. “For Sugarloaf, visit it in the morning, as it is fresher; sunset is beautiful but extremely crowded," says Balardjischvili. "If you are traveling during the high season, buy a skip-the-line ticket." The mountain peak sits almost 1,300 feet in the air, so you’ll be grateful you don’t have to climb all the way up. 

When asked about the best time of year to visit Rio de Janeiro, Balardjischvili says May or June, when "you’ll enjoy beautiful sunny days with no rain and 77 degrees.”

Buenos Aires, Argentina

One of my favorite cities in the world is Buenos Aires , where you can find anything from tango shows and street art to the best steak you’ll ever eat. Each neighborhood has something special. Head to La Boca for beautiful murals along the streets, then tour the famous cemetery in Recoleta before stopping at a speakeasy in Palermo. There’s no shortage of fantastic things to do here, and the city makes a wonderful home base for seeing more of Argentina.

Zuccardi Valle de Uco is an award-winning winery that I had the opportunity to visit this past January. It certainly lives up to its reputation, with fantastic wines and the Andes as a stunning backdrop to the property's extensive vineyards. Reservations for tastings and tours can be made online.

Iguazú Falls, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazú Falls is comprised of about 275 individual waterfalls, making it the largest waterfall system in the world. Most of the waterfalls are on the Argentina side, but the tallest is on the Brazil side. It’s a stunning sight to behold and an absolute must for anyone traveling through South America.

Punta del Este Beaches, Uruguay

Uruguay is still relatively underrated, but it is a fantastic place for international travelers. It takes just a couple of hours by ferry to get from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. From there, it’s about a two-hour drive to Punta del Este, which has some of the best beaches in the country, plus high-end shopping and fantastic steakhouses.

Valparaíso, Chile

Valparaíso is located on the coast of Chile and is less than a two-hour drive from Santiago. It’s famous for its colorful homes and for being the home of renowned poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda. It’s also connected to Viña del Mar, where you'll find some of Chile's top beaches. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site with excellent architecture and many things to discover.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galápagos Islands are perfect for nature lovers. Visitors can learn about the archipelago's unique biodiversity, go scuba diving, lounge on beaches, or embark on a multi-island cruise. You might also swim with sea lions or hang out with giant turtles.

Easter Island is a Chilean territory in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. It’s known for the nearly 900 stone statues of human figures, called moai , that you'll find here. The statues are believed to have been created over time, from the 11th century to some time in the 17th century. From Santiago, it’s about a 5.5-hour flight to reach the island.

Mexico leads as the US’ top touristic destination.

The Latin America and the Caribbean regions are the top touristic destinations for US travelers in 2022. According to a recent study published by Allianz Travel, the top ten international destinations for US travelers are in countries such as Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas. How has this impacted the connectivity via air travel? Let’s find out.

Leading destinations

Sun and beach destinations such as Cancún, San José del Cabo, and Oranjestad have become the favorites for the average US traveler.

Allianz Travel recently released a study reviewing over 1.1 million flight bookings by US tourists looking to travel between May 27 and September 6. Around 25% are looking to spend their holidays abroad.

Mexico leads as the US’ top touristic destination. This country has three destinations in the top ten favorite places for US travelers. These destinations are Cancún, San José del Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta .

According to data by Cirium, Cancún International Airport (CUN) currently receives 831 weekly flights from the United States, served by ten airlines (nine from the United States and only one Mexican, Viva Aerobus). United Airlines operates the most weekly flights to Cancún, with 165, closely followed by American Airlines (164).

Other top Latin American and Caribbean destinations

Allianz’s report outlined the top ten international destinations for US travelers. These are:

• Cancun, Mexico
• San José del Cabo, Mexico
• Oranjestad, Aruba
• Montego Bay, Jamaica
• Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic
• Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
• Nassau, the Bahamas
• Providenciales, Turks, and Caicos
• Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands
• Liberia, Costa Rica.

According to data by Cirium, these ten destinations have 2,614 weekly flights, with 409,439 available seats. These numbers are 4.2% and 19.6% above 2019 levels.

American Airlines operates the most flights to these destinations with 651 weekly flights, followed by United Airlines, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines , and Southwest Airlines . The non-US carriers that operate in these markets are Bahamas Air, Viva Aerobus, and Caribbean Airlines.

The impact on the travel industry

In the last two years, the fastest international recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic has taken place in the Americas.

According to the latest data released by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Latin America is currently above 2019 levels in terms of total seat capacity overall (both domestic and international). The US-Latin America & Caribbean market has recovered quite strongly. According to data provided by Cirium, as of June 2022, there are 7,815 weekly flights from the United States to Latin America & the Caribbean, still 10.9% below pre-pandemic levels. Nonetheless, this market has 1.2 million available seats each week, surpassing by 1.6% of the levels from June 2019.

Certain airlines have performed exceedingly well in this market. For instance, Frontier Airlines has increased by 220.5% its flights to Latin America & the Caribbean and by 193.4% its number of seats. Viva Aerobus is another carrier that has increased its presence in the United States (doing it despite Mexico’s Category 2 status), surpassing 218.9% and 233.3% of its flight and capacity offers.

Guatemala ’s tourism sector is growing quickly in the post-pandemic travel era, with airlines adding new routes to the country and millions of visitors expected to arrive this year. Even so, it’s still a relatively underexplored destination – which means you’ll find plenty of authentic experiences, uncrowded archaeological sites and opportunities for customised excursions.

Start in the charming city of Antigua with a bespoke tour of its historical sites, museums, restaurants and small businesses. Guatemala is renowned for its textiles, chocolate and coffee, and you can see first-hand how each of these artisanal products is made. We suggest staying at El Convento , an elegant hotel that reflects the colonial history of Antigua.

To witness a one-of-a-kind cultural event, plan your trip to coincide with All Saints’ Day on 1st November. Many of our favourite destinations in Brazil strike a balance between protecting the incredible natural environment while also offering amazing experiences. In the country’s interior you’ll find one of the world’s largest wetland areas –  the Pantanal – and the remote refuge of Casa Caiman . From this environmentally conscious hotel, set at the heart of a 53,000-hectare oasis, you can spot jaguars in the wild with the Onçafari conservation project.

Farther north, Cristalino Jungle Lodge is the perfect place to experience the wonders of the Amazon first-hand. It’s located within a huge forest reserve and relies on renewable building materials, natural ventilation systems, permaculture and solar panels to work in harmony with the natural environment.

In recent years, the Casco Viejo (historic centre) of Panama City has been completely revitalised with urban regeneration projects and new hotel openings. In 2024 we suggest checking out the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, a sophisticated hotel set in the building that once housed the iconic Union Club. You can also experience the Panama Canal from a VIP area at the Miraflores Locks, allowing you to skip the crowds and see the canal up close.

Panama has plenty to offer outside of its capital city as well. We love the new Nayara Bocas del Toro, a true tropical paradise featuring private overwater villas in the Caribbean Sea. You can go glamping in the San Blas Islands, meet the Emberá people in the Darién province or spend a week sailing between Panama and Costa Rica on a brand new luxury yacht – including a few nights on your own private island.

In fact, it’ll be easier than ever to combine a trip to Panama with Costa Rica in 2024 – thanks not only to the aforementioned yacht, but also to increasingly frequent flights between these neighbouring countries. Visiting both in the same trip allows you to experience different cultures and explore contrasting landscapes, from lush green jungles to idyllic secluded beaches.

Chile ’s sheer variety of landscapes astound. The desolate Atacama Desert , lush green undulating wine valleys , snow-capped volcanoes of the Lake District and windswept plains of Torres del Paine keep us coming back year after year. In 2024 we want to journey a little further, to places like Chiloé , Aisén or Navarino Island – where the rewards of longer trips mean exploring coastlines, islands, and national parks away from the crowds, and the chance to delve into the Indigenous culture of the Mapuche.

Our travel designer Charles has been on the ground exploring and we’ve been hearing wonderful things about Explora Patagonia National Park , an intimate and peaceful lodge. From here you can navigate some of the worlds most crystalline waters on the Cochrane River, mountain bike across the Patagonian steppe or attempt a high mountain ascent of Tamango or Oportus,.

Galápagos Islands

This is the year to make that once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galápagos Islands . We recommend booking a suite on a luxury vessel like the Endemic or the Elite . Both of these ships have been working hard on minimising their environmental impact by reducing fuel consumption, using biodegradable products and implementing purified water dispensers to reduce single-use plastics.

If you prefer to stay on land, Galápagos Safari Camp and Pikaia Lodge are also terrific options. Galápagos Safari Camp is renowned for its reforestation efforts, while Pikaia Lodge was the first carbon-neutral hotel to open in the Galápagos. Staying on land affords a little more flexibility and a more bespoke approach to your daily activities, which we find works brilliantly for families.

The islands are a year-round destination, so they can easily slot into your 2024 schedule no matter when you’re planning on travelling. That said, our wildlife expert Lily points out that if you want to see certain animals, the best time to visit the Galápagos varies accordingly.

We know Antarctica isn’t technically part of Latin America, but combining it with Chile or Argentina creates an incredible three- or four-week trip. It goes without saying that this is a destination unlike any other. If you want to embark on a truly remote and thrilling adventure, challenging yourself in extreme conditions, we can’t recommend the White Continent enough in 2024.

You can reach Antarctica by sailing the Drake Passage from Ushuaia , or do a fly-in cruise from Chile to save time. When it comes to ships, we recommend Sylvia Earle , which has the world’s lowest-polluting marine engines, or the Magellan Explorer , which re-uses heat from the engine to warm up the ship – among many other environmentally conscious initiatives. Over the past few years, Bolivia has been working hard to establish itself as a tourism destination on par with its popular neighbours. In 2024 you can reap the rewards of those efforts by experiencing lesser-known destinations and rugged adventures that highlight not only the country’s natural beauty, but also its distinctive cultural identity.

Bolivia is best known for the spectacular Salar de Uyuni , which can form either end of an adventurous journey between Bolivia and Chile (with stops at luxurious lodges along the way). Visit the salt flats during the rainy season from November to March to see the famous ‘mirror effect’ – and avoid the crowds that descend during the dry season. 

Although Uyuni is not to be missed, there’s much more to discover in Bolivia. The lofty city of La Paz is nothing short of magical – but smaller cities like Sucre , Cochabamba and Potosi are also packed with ancient history and cultural landmarks. Then there are the stunning caves and canyons of Torotoro National Park; the mystical Islands of the Moon and Sun in Lake Titicaca ; and the ancient temples and pyramids of sites like Tiwanaku.

Bolivia borders both Peru and Chile, making it easy to combine with these classic destinations. That said, 2024 could be the perfect year to dedicate more time to exploring this country in depth, rather than just hitting the highlights. This will give you plenty of time to get to know Bolivia’s culture – not to mention its cuisine, from hearty soups to salteñas (crispy baked empanadas).

There are so many reasons to go to Colombia , from the lively cities of Bogotá and Medellín to the coastal paradises of Cartagena and Tayrona . In 2024, we’ll be recommending destinations that have seen the most positive change in the past few years, now with some of Latin America’s most exclusive accommodations and enriching experiences for travellers. For instance, the highland town of Barichara (now easily reachable via a new airport), the tropical grasslands of Los Llanos and the seaside village of Bahía Solano.

21. Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is a major city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. It was founded by the Spanish in 1533, who named it after Cartagena, Spain. During Spain’s domination in South America, the city was the center of politics and the economy.

20. Salvador, Brazil

Salvador da Bahia, also known as just Salvador, has several things going for it. The Portuguese founded it in 1548, so it’s one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. You’ll see its rich past in Pelourinho, the historic center named for the whipping post where slaves were beaten.

Brazil’s third largest city was also the first slave port in the Americas; traces of this African heritage can be found in the local culture today, especially the cuisine. Salvador also is a party town, hosting the world’s largest party: its annual Carnival celebration.

19. Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina

They don’t do things in a small way in Los Glaciares National Park. Not only is the park the largest national park in Argentina, it is home to the largest ice cap outside of Greenland and Antarctica – an ice cap that feeds 47 large glaciers. The most famous of these is the Perito Moreno glacier; unique among glaciers because it is advancing while others are receding.

The park also is home to Lake Argentino, the largest in the country. The park also is known for its ecology and biodiversity with the well-conserved Magellan Subpolar forest and Patagonian Steppe.

18. Pantanal, Brazil

The Pantanal can be difficult to get to – access is mostly by plane or boat – but once you get there…Oh! The Pantanal, located mostly in Brazil (some is in Bolivia and Paraguay), is the world’s largest tropical wetland, encompassing an area the size of Washington State.

While not as famous as its sister wetlands in the Amazon, the Pantanal is the best place in South America to see wildlife, ranging from jaguars to capybaras.

17. Ushuaia, Argentina

If you like to visit remote places, then put Ushuaia on your bucket list. The capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia is considered the southernmost city in the world. Indeed, the train to the End of the World ends here.

Nestled among the mountains along a bay, Ushuaia is very picturesque when it’s not cloudy or windy, which is much of the time. The former penal colony has a museum and it’s a good place to see penguins, orca whales and seals.

When protecting the environment and its inhabitants while enjoying stunning views is on your top list, you’re sure to enjoy Tayrona National Park on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

The country’s second most visited national park, Tayrona is a protected marine reserve that takes in both land and sea. You’ll find great biodiversity in the flora and fauna here. Wildlife includes 300 species of birds, more than 100 different mammals and 70 kinds of bats.

Tayrona is probably best known for its spectacular beaches, which are set in deep bays, backed by mountains and shaded by coconut palms. Because of strong current however most beaches are not suitable for swimming.

Ecuador’s capital, Quito, is unique among world capitals. It is the highest capital in the world (La Paz is higher but isn’t Bolivia’s legal capital) and also closest to the equator. Founded by the Spanish in 1534, Quito’s colorful old town is one of the best-preserved, least changed and largest in all the Americas.

Located in Ecuador’s northern highlands, the city is surrounded by volcanoes that can be seen on a clear day. Quito is the only world capital that is threatened by active volcanoes.

There’s a reason Colca Canyon is the third most visited tourist destination in Peru: stunning views. The canyon is one of the deepest in the world, but not the deepest in Peru, though it is more than twice as deep as the U.S. Grand Canyon.

If you get tired of scenic views, you can feast your eyes on the sky where you may see Andean condors and the biggest hummingbirds you’ve ever seen. Villages are a good place to buy local handcrafts.

The Atacama Desert is unique: It’s the driest non-polar desert in the world, maybe only raining once every four years. It stretches about 1,600 km (1,000 miles) along the coast of Chile, situated between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean.

The soil is comparable to that found on Mars; portions stood in for Mars in the movie, Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets. Vast salt flats, active geysers and intense blue lagoons are just a few of the extraordinary features of this region.

12. Angel Falls, Venezuela

Angel Falls is most definitely a scene stealer in Venezuela’s Guayana Highlands. It is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world – 15 times higher than Niagara Falls, which is shared by Canada and the United States. Water cascades more than 950 meters (3,200 feet) down Auyantepu Mountain into the Rio Kerepacupai Meru.

The waterfall is named for American Jimmy Angel who, in 1937, became the first pilot to fly over the falls. Getting there is an adventure involving plane and river boat rides.

Cusco has a colorful historic past Located at 3,400 meters (11,000 feet) in elevation in the Andes Mountains, Cusco was once the capital of the mighty Inca Empire. Then, in the 16th century, it was conquered by the Spanish, who pretty much decimated the Incas.

Though not the national capital, Peru’s constitution names it the historical capital of the country. Remains of many Inca sites can be found in the surrounding area while the Spanish colonial heritage can be found in the Old Town.

10. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Situated in the Andes nearly 3,700 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level, Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat. Located in southwest Peru, the salt flat is covered by a thick crust, which provides salt and covers a brine.

The salt flat is as flat as you can get and with the harsh terrain looks otherwordly, especially after rain when the Salar turns into a giant mirror. One of the most unusual places to visit in South America, it’s also a major breeding ground for flamingos.

9. Lake Titicaca, Peru & Bolivia

Lake Titicaca, South America’s largest lake, straddles the border of Bolivia and Peru. At an elevation of just over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), it is considered the highest navigable lake in the world, though there are smaller lakes higher than this one.

Many of its 41 islands are inhabited, including the floating islands the natives make with heavy reeds. About 500 species of aquatic life live in the lake, which has a large population of water birds. Local belief says the sun was born at Lake Titicaca.

8. Easter Island, Chile

Getting to Easter Island can be time-consuming, since it is the most remote inhabited island in the world. The nearest inhabitants are almost 1,300 miles away. But it’s not its remoteness this Chilean territory is noted for. It’s what you’ll see when you get there: almost 900 primitive statues carved by early Polynesian inhabitants.

These awesome statues, called moai, may have been carved about 1,000 years ago. Most statues were carved from solidified volcanic ash, with obsidian being used for the black eyes.

7. Amazon Rainforest

If you lived long enough to count that high, you could count 390 billion trees in the Amazon rainforest. This statistic is mind-boggling, to be sure, but then the Amazon rainforest is one awesome piece of real estate, covering about ¾ of the Amazon River basin.

It is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Sixty percent of the rainforest is located in Brazil with sizeable chunks in Peru and Columbia; bordering countries have small shares. For sure, the rainforest is loaded with unique flora and fauna.

6. Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

It may be located in remote Chilean Patagonia, but Torres del Paine National Park is one of Chile’s largest and most visited parks. Why? Well, the scenery is pretty spectacular.

The Torres del Paine (Paine means blue in the local indigenous language) is just one awesome sight you’ll see. The three peaks dominate the landscape in the Paine Mountains. Besides mountains, the park is dotted with glaciers, rivers, forests and steppe, making it a hit with outdoors enthusiasts. The park also is home to an endangered species of deer.

5. Buenos Aires, Argentina

With 17 million people, Buenos Aires has the fourth largest population in the Americas. Located on the Rio de la Plata on the Argentinian coast, the city is noted for its cosmopolitan flair.

Because of its architecture and rich cultural life, Buenos Aires is the most visited city in South America. A must-see here is the Recoleta, a residential neighborhood known for its history. The Recoleta Cemetery is the district’s most famous attraction; it’s where Eva Peron is buried.

4. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

If you want to get a glimpse of what prehistoric animals may have looked like, head to the Galapagos Islands. The animals are like no other place on earth, and include giant tortoises and scary-looking iguanas.

They were the impetus for Charles Darwin’s controversial 19th century book, On the Origin of Species. This archipelago of 18 major islands, about 900 km (550 miles) off the coast of Ecuador, was formed – and are still being formed – by volcanic action.

3. Iguazu Falls, Brazil & Argentina

One of the best places to visit in South America, Iguazu Falls have to be seen to be appreciated as mere words cannot do them justice. They truly live up to their name, which translates as “big water:” They’re the world’s largest waterfalls system, with 275 waterfalls of various sizes – Devil’s Throat is the biggest.

For much of its journey to the ocean, the Iguazu River flows through Brazil, but, seemingly in a spirit of international cooperation, most of the falls are in Argentina.

2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

When you visit Rio de Janeiro you simply must take a samba lesson; even The Girl from Ipanema does the samba, Rio’s most popular dance. Besides the samba, this cosmopolitan city is known for its Carnival, the bossa nova, and Copacabana Beach.

Its most famous landmark may be the Christ the Redeemer statue that sits atop Corcovado Mountain. Rio hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, though its residents overwhelmingly prefer soccer: Maracana Stadium is one of the largest soccer stadiums in the world.

1. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is a magnificent representation of the Inca civilization before the Spanish came. Nestled in the Peruvian Andes, Machu Picchu served as a palace for the emperor, a fortress and as a site for religious ceremonies where human sacrifices were made to appease the gods.

Untouched by the Spanish, the site was abandoned after the conquest, only to be “discovered” by an American professor in the early 1900s. Built from polished stones, Machu Picchu is a fascinating example of classical Inca architecture. With its spectacular views, Machu Picchu is Peru’s most visited tourist attraction.

The Pantanal (Brazil)

The world’s largest contiguous freshwater wetland, the Pantanal environment is in stark contrast to the tree filled rainforest of the Amazon. Despite this, wildlife abounds with many species hard to spot in the dense rainforest seen here with relative ease. Animals have adapted to the wide open spaces in fantastic ways. This includes capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which in the rainforest occurs in small groups but are found on the Pantanal in vast herds.

The wildlife you can see here includes capybara, the world’s largest concentration of caiman crocodiles, jaguar, which grow to a larger size than their Amazon cousins, and many parrots, including the fantastic blue hyacinth macaws.

Cusco & Machu Picchu (Peru)

The most visited tourist destination in Peru, Cusco itself is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site due to its cultural and historical significance. This was not only the origin of the tribe later to become the Inca Empire, but later became the empire’s political center. The vast empire itself covered Peru and extended into Ecuador, Colombia, and down to Argentina.

The Inca Trail Classic

Machu Picchu is still the main reason why most tourists visit Peru and it does deserve the attention. To stand gazing onto this incredible monument is to travel back in time. The fantastic UNESCO listed World Heritage Site was a 15th century Inca structure built by emperor Pachacuti who lived between 1438 and 1472. This was about one hundred years before the Inca empire collapsed at the hands of the Spanish. The nearby Choquequirao, also known as the Cradle of Gold, was then built to rival Machu Picchu and provides a great alternative trek.

Cusco then provides a base to visit the nearby Manu National Park region , the largest and most pristine park in the country.

Andean Cloud Forest

One of the world’s most diverse and threatened ecosystems, the forests of the Andes show off an incredible amount of animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth. The altitude here creates the environment for fantastic animals, including many different hummingbirds, capuchin monkeys, butterflies, weird and wonderful plants, including different orchids, and Peru’s national bird, the brightly colored cock of the rock.

One of the best places to visit cloud forest to see fascinating wildlife is the Andean slope of Peru’s Manu National Park and its surrounding region. Here you can enjoy being close to the cock of the rock display ground, where the birds perform courtship dances to attract their mates.

The area around the lake is home to many different birds, including many species found nowhere else. Easter Island (Chile)

One of the planet’s most culturally and historically fascinating areas, Easter island is dotted with giant stone statues called ‘Moai’ as if to symbolise the power and ability of their now silent tribes.

This UNESCO listed World Heritage Site is one of the world’s most remote islands. In addition to the fascinating Moai, enjoy small but beautiful beaches, volcanoes, lagoons, and learn about the fascinating cultural history. Aside from land-based activities, the coastal area is home to marine life you can enjoy on snorkeling or diving tours.

You can reach Easter Island from Chile, although even from here it’s a 3,700km flight to the east. You can imagine why the colonisation and civilization of Easter island was an incredible achievement and as the civilization once flourished, it makes the demise all the more mysterious.

Iguazu Falls (Argentina & Brazil)

Brushing against the tropics, Iguazu Falls is an awe-inspiring attraction and one of the world’s few spectacular waterfalls. Located mainly in Argentina with about 20% across Brazil, this giant semicircular cascading waterfall reaches across 2,700 meters and is 80 meters high.

The waterfall is surrounded by pristine subtropical rainforest filled with different monkeys, jaguar, and caiman crocodiles. The main areas to access the falls are Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina.

Protected by both the Iguazú National Park in Argentina and the Brazilian Iguaçu National Park, both of these parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the falls themselves are regarded as one of the world’s 7 natural wonders.

You can visit different sections of the incredible falls by walking the upper and lower circuits to get some great views. In addition to these circuits, you can also take a picturesque train ride around the falls for some fantastic photographs.

One of the most famous ‘rainforest-meets-beach’ destinations, Costa Rica draws thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the idyllic beaches and fantastically diverse tropical forests.

The scenery and landscape of Costa Rica is remarkable. With crater lakes, waterfalls, lush rainforests, volcano backdrops, misty cloud forests, and beautiful beaches, Costa Rica makes a fantastic tropical getaway for an adventurous vacation or simply a relaxed escape from a busy life.

There are a few recommended lodges to enjoy Costa Rica’s rainforest . You can explore the marine environment to enjoy turtles, whales, and dolphins on cruises and tours in coastal waters and walk the diverse rainforests and protected areas. Mexico is a fantastic destination to visit due to its diversity of attractions, both natural and cultural. Enjoy beautiful beaches, diverse tropical rainforest, fantastic festivals, colonial towns and architecture, and the ancient Maya and Aztec ruins.

Because of this incredible diversity the country contains many UNESCO World Heritage Listed Sites, such as the famous Mayan city of Chichen Itza. Making for a movie-style archeological adventure, there are many ruins dotted around the country with some hidden by tropical rainforest.

Festivities in the country are also fantastic with one of the most famous being the Dia de Muertos or the day of the dead, which lasts for a few days from October 31. Mexico City then celebrates Festival de México in mid March and there are many more throughout the year. The festivities are always great events with music, dancing, and costumes.

Mexico city and especially its historical center are worth a visit to see the colonial architecture and to enjoy fantastic restaurants, bars, cafes, galleries, and museums. Another attractive and popular destination for a colonial style city is Guanajuato in the country’s center.

You can stay at very comfortable rainforest lodges to explore the surrounding animals and plants. Enjoy the 1.9 million hectare Lacandon Jungle, which stretches from Chiapas into northern Guatemala. Animals you can find here include famous macaws, toucans, several different monkeys, tapir, and jaguar.

The Cerrado (Brazil)

The Cerrado is a mostly unheard of region despite covering around 20% of Brazil. The Cerrado is a tropical savanna area home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including tool-using capuchin monkeys, elegant maned wolves, and blue hyacinth macaws.

Enjoy touring the environment to see incredible scenery of an area that once extended over a territory half the size of the European continent. The savannah offers ravines and cliffs to create a dramatic and adventurous scenery, which is filled with the above mentioned wildlife and much more. This incredible environment contains many large mammals, such as the maned wolves mentioned above, but also jaguar, deer, and giant anteater.

In addition to the mammals, among the gnarled trees and savanna’s 10,000 or so plant species (50% are endemic), you can find an incredible diversity of bird life. This includes a number of critically endangered species, such as Spix’s macaw.

The Caribbean

The famous tropical getaway to relax on stereotypical island beaches among waving palm trees and glistening tropical waters, the Caribbean continues to draw thousands of visitors each year. Choose from many destinations, from the caribbean coast of Central America, the magnificent Colombian cities of Santa Marta and Cartagena, Jamaica, the Florida Keys, and the new tourism hot spot of Cuba.

For some real tropical island experience on the Caribbean, you can choose the Virgin Islands, Dominica, Aruba, Bahamas, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, St. Martin, Turks & Caicos, Curacao, and Barbados.

Angel Falls (Venezuela)

We couldn’t really complete this list without mentioning the fantasised destination of Disney’s animated movie ‘Up.’ Angel Falls is the world’s largest uninterrupted waterfall at 3,212 feet. With combining this with Iguazu mentioned before, there are few others that can compete with these in terms of grandeur.

The most famous and frequently visited tourist site in Venezuela, you can see the UNESCO World Heritage listed waterfall by taking scheduled boat tours to the falls on the Carrao River from the city of Canaima. The falls can be visited when the waters are at the best, which is from June to December. You can also enjoy the incredible view from helicopter, which provides the same jaw dropping experience as the pilot after whom the falls were named.

With over 41 million international arrivals in 2015 and an average growth of 5%, Latin America’s travel and tourism industry has incredible potential to help generate growth, create jobs and enable regional development.

But which countries are best positioned to benefit most from the industry? You might not be surprised to find out that beautiful natural sceneries like the Iguazu Falls and iconic cultural landmarks like Machu Picchu aren’t the only factors that determine whether a destination is competitive.

Every year, we release the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report , which ranks countries based on a range of polices in place to enable the sustainable development of the sector. The report looks at factors such as how easy it is to do business in a country, specific travel and tourism policies, infrastructure, and natural and cultural resources.

So which are the 10 most competitive countries in Latin America? And more importantly, what do they all have in common?

The majority of Latin American nations rely on rich natural resources and good hospitality (what we refer to as “tourist service infrastructure”) to appeal to tourists. They also tend to be internationally open, through their visa policies. Governments in the region realize the strategic role tourism plays in creating jobs (10% of global GDP) and support the sector proactively. At the same time, the region shares some areas for development, such as ground infrastructure and the opportunity to better value cultural resources.

While the best-performing countries have many features in common, they each have their own specificities that set them apart.

Looking at the results, you’ll see that Mexico leads the way, ranking 22nd globally and toping Latin America. It is one of the most improved countries in the index, rising eight positions this year. The government’s prioritization of the sector and the great use of both natural and cultural resources have paid off.

To continue enhancing its competitiveness, Mexico should focus on making the country safer, and further commit to improving environmental sustainability and preserving its natural resources.

Brazil took the second spot in Latin America, ranking 27th globally. The country is blessed with the largest and more diverse natural resources on the planet, and strong cultural resources. Brazil also benefits from good tourist service infrastructure and air connectivity, while remaining a price competitive destination.

Unfortunately, the security and business context have worsened. The homicide rate remains high and the business environment continues to worsen due to inefficiencies in the legal system, red tape and high taxes. At the same time, the sector has not received much governmental support, with little investment and marketing activity.

Argentina is another country in Latin America that made significant progress, rising seven places in the global rankings to reach 50th position. The country, which is already endowed with exceptional natural and cultural resources, has significantly benefited from improvements to its “enabling environment” – factors such as its labour market and ICT infrastructure.

Still, Argentina could better seize the momentum by investing more in the travel and tourism sector. Today, less than 2.5% of its government budget is invested in the sector, while the taxes and charges levied on tickets are among the highest in the world. Changing these policies could have a swift and direct effect on boosting the industry.

South America is a continent of contrasting landscapes, featuring the highest, the driest, the largest, the deepest, the rarest, and more… If planning a vacation to South America , below please find our compilation of 10 of the most incredible attractions worth considering:

1. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is one of the most intriguing destinations on the planet and arguably the greatest of South America’s tourist attractions. Shrouded by mist and surrounded by lush vegetation and steep escarpments, this abandoned ancient Incan city is perfectly perched 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes, soaring above the Urubamba Valley below. Constructed in the 1450s, Machu Picchu is thought to have been either a country estate for the emperor or an important place of worship.

The city’s well-preserved buildings include houses, temples, fountains, and baths in addition to agricultural terraces and evidence of an irrigation system. Other incredible structures include the Temple of the Sun, the Astronomical Observatory, and the Intihuatana, which all point to an advanced understanding of the Sun and its planetary influences. Until the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham stumbled upon Machu Picchu in 1911, the abandoned citadel’s existence was a secret known only to peasants living in the region.

2. Iguazu Falls, Argentina, and Brazil

Another incredible South American attraction is located at the point where Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina meet. Here, ten miles before joining the Parana River, the Iguazu River flows over the rough ground within the forest, before dramatically hurling itself into a semicircular chain of 247 irregular waterfalls that thunder down into the gorge below.

Just above the falls, the river is bottlenecked to a quarter of its usual breadth, making the force of the water even stronger. Some of the cascades are more than 330 feet high and they extend nearly 1.85 miles, so you’ll never see all of them at once. The power, noise, and presence of the Iguazu falls can be felt from both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides. The two sides offer different perspectives and views, so it’s a good idea to plan to see both.

Galapagos Islands

3. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Located in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the wonderful, isolated Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago of 13 major islands, six smaller islands, and more than 100 islets. A cruise to the various islands of the Galapagos is a naturalist’s dream, filled with a diverse array of plant and animal life unique in the world. The creatures that call the islands home act as if humans are nothing more than slightly annoying paparazzi.

The exotic flora and fauna include giant cacti, finches, flightless cormorants, and the famed giant tortoise, whose average lifespan of 100 years makes it the longest living vertebrate on earth. Inquisitive sea lions and spiky marine iguanas breach and bask between island and shore, while friendly hammerhead sharks patrol the depths and blue-footed boobies cut through the sky. The Galapagos marine animals include more than 2,900 species, 25% percent of which are endemic; among the most notable of these are the Galapagos penguins (the only penguin species native to the Northern Hemisphere), Galapagos sea lions, marine iguanas, whales, and whale sharks.

Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro

4. Sugarloaf Mountain, Brazil

Sugarloaf Mountain is Brazil’s famous quartz and granite peak, which overlooks Guanabara Bay. It juts out of a tree-covered promontory, rising nearly 1300 feet above the beaches and city of Rio de Janeiro . Its summit offers jaw-dropping birds-eye views of Rio and the harbor, together with the thrill of riding in a cable car. The first leg of the trip is from Avenida Pasteur in Praia Vermelha, the Red Beach District, which takes you to the top of Urca Mountain. The ride gives you the first aerial view of Copacabana, the Christ statue, Niteroi Bridge, and Guanabara Bay. The second cable car takes you from Urca to the top of Sugarloaf with an amazing 360-degree view of the region.

5. Christ the Redeemer statue, Brazil

A vacation to Brazil must include its most iconic monument and Rio’s most visited attraction, the statue of Christ the Redeemer was completed in 1931. Although it is a Christian monument, it is accepted in the world as a universal symbol of peace. The statue stands 98 feet tall, with horizontally outstretched arms spanning 92 feet; it has become emblematic of both the city of Rio de Janeiro and the whole nation of Brazil and is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world as well as being named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

It provides magnificent views over Rio de Janeiro and the bay from the summit of Corcovado, 2310 feet above the city. The area on which it stands is part of the Tijuca National Park, and a rack railway climbs two miles to a broad plaza at the top. A mid-point stop on the railway leads to trails through the Tijuca National Park, replete with springs, waterfalls, and a wide variety of tropical birds, butterflies, and plants.

6. Amazon Rainforest

Unparalleled in scale, complexity, and diversity, the Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical forest on Earth, with the highest density of plant and animal species anywhere. Sixty percent of the rainforest is located in Brazil with sizable chunks in Peru and Columbia, and smaller shares in Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Made up of a mosaic of ecosystems and vegetation types including rainforests, seasonal forests, deciduous forests, flooded forests, and savannas, the Amazon has an incredibly rich ecosystem – there are around 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird species, 3,000 types of fish, 430 mammals, a whopping 2.5 million different insects, as well as other forms of life, many still unrecorded by science. There are but a few of the reasons a tour of the Amazon Rainforest should be part of a South American itinerary.

7. Patagonia

Located in the southernmost tip of South America, Patagonia is a territory shared by the countries of Chile and Argentina. It covers an area of around 300,000 square miles including some islands of Argentine Antarctica and South Atlantic, as well as the popular territory of Tierra del Fuego . The striking scenery of Patagonia is the result of major glaciological and geological transformations that took place in the region millions of years ago, creating mountains and countless valleys, carved by fjords, rivers, and lakes, and capped by glistening glaciers. Patagonia is one of the most uninhabited areas of our planet and home to an incredible variety of wildlife and plant life, many of which are endemic to the region. Some of the highlights include Torres del Paine National Park, Los Glaciares National Park, Valdes Peninsula, and Bariloche.

There are countless reasons to visit Peru’s colorful city of Cusco , located in the Southern Sierras, and once the heart of the Incan empire. Today, it holds the title of the archaeological capital of the Americas. Its ruins are prime examples of exceptional Incan engineering. Star attractions include the Temple of the Sun, the Cusco Cathedral, and the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which is an ancient engineering marvel because of its accurate alignment with annual solstices and its ability to withstand earthquakes. The heart of the city is the main square, the Plaza de Armas, which is surrounded by restaurants, cafes, and churches. San Pedro Market is nearby with vendors selling Quechua handicrafts. The city is the center of Quechua culture in the Andes, and its mountains are etched with trekking routes and hot springs.

Easter Island, Chile

9. Easter Island, Chile

Located more than 2,000 miles from central Chile, Rapa Nui or Easter Island continues to be one of the world’s greatest mysteries. It is the most isolated inhabited island on the planet, and this remoteness has helped preserve its 1,500-year-old enigmatic assembly of volcanic rock sculptures, which are known as “moai” and characterized by giant, gaunt, hollow-eyed, faces. A total of 887 of these statues, created by the island’s early Rapa Nui population, have been identified, with most of them now protected by Rapa Nui National Park.

The most impressive collection is at Ahu Tongariki, where 15 of them have been re-erected on the island’s largest Moai platform, or “ahu.”
