With the fully staged production of LES MISÉRABLES reopen in London alongside HAMILTON, MARY POPPINS and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA now lockdown restrictions have been lifted, and with LES MISÉRABLES and OLIVER! due to open in Tokyo over the next few months followed by MISS SAIGON in Austria and MARY POPPINS in Tokyo and Sydney next year, Cameron remains the world’s most prolific producer of musicals, with over 50 shows either on or in pre-production internationally.

Cameron’s Original productions include LES MISÉRABLES, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and CATS – the three longest running musicals of all time, now in their 4 th decades – MISS SAIGON, MARY POPPINS (co-produced with Disney), LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, SONG AND DANCE, TOMFOOLERY, MARTIN GUERRE, THE WITHCES OF EASTWICK, FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE and SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM. He also reinvented modern versions of OLIVER!, FOLLIES, HALF A SIXPENCE, BARNUM and MY FAIR LADY. His new versions of LES MISÉRABLES, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MISS SAIGON and OLIVER! are now proving as successful as the original productions.

In 2013, alongside Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced the hugely successful Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film adaptation of LES MISÉRABLES which is the most successful movie ever of an original stage musical.

The sold-out staged concert of LES MISÉRABLES at the Gielgud Theatre in 2019 was also broadcast live to over 600 cinemas and is now the highest grossing one-night live event performance of all time – a unique achievement in the history of Musical Theatre and has enjoyed another successful five month season at the Sondheim, despite having a five month hiatus due to Covid.

Cameron owns and operates eight historic London theatres which have all been spectacularly rebuilt and refurbished for the 21 st century. They house many of London’s successful hits. The Sondheim, formerly known as the Queen’s, has been rebuilt and renamed in honour of Cameron’s great friend, theatrical legend Stephen Sondheim.

Music Theatre International, the world’s largest owner of secondary rights of many of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies.

Cameron was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British theatre and he is the first British producer to be elected to Broadway’s Theater Hall of Fame. In 1990, Cameron inaugurated the Chair of Contemporary Theatre at St. Catherine’s College in Oxford University, with Stephen Sondheim as his visiting professor. He is also the president of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

As a pianist and accordionist, his performing and recording credits include work with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (the UK premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul at Symphony Hall), the BBC Concert Orchestra (John Williams Prom, Fiddler on the Roof Prom and Danny Elfman tribute) and Rambert. Mark performed in the live BBC broadcasts Liverpool

Nativity and Manchester Passion , and has played on numerous film soundtracks, including Beauty and the Beast, Whisky Galore! and The Children Act , for which he was piano coach to Emma Thompson.

Review: LES MISERABLES National Tour at Key Bank State

LES MIZ! still Les Okay, in its tour kick-off at the Key Bank State Theatre

pixeltracker

When LES MISERABLE last came to CLE in November of 2018, in part I wrote: From the very first time I saw " Les Miserables ," shortly after its opening in London, to the New York production, and through the various touring shows, I have been a fan of the show. Not just a fan, a fanatic fan! Interestingly, when " Les Miz " first opened in London in 1985 the production was generally met with tepid reviews. This was a musical about greed, child abuse, revolution and cruelty. It contained thwarted idealism, frustration and the seeming defeat of good by evil. This is a musical with the word "miserable" in the title, has physical beatings and numerous onstage deaths, and lacks a typical happy ending. Is this the stuff musicals are made of? Not usually. But, there is no reason that serious subjects cannot be treated in the musical form. Les Miz proves that contention, as does " Next to Normal " and " Dear Evan Hanson, " and proves it well. There is also no reason that strong emotions about death cannot be visualized as "empty chairs at empty tables," or hope cannot be expressed as, "there is life about to start, when tomorrow comes," or, that infatuation cannot be explained as "a heart full of love," or the future can't be prophesized as, "I dreamed that love would never die," and a powerful story can't be summarized with the musical's ending lyric, "To love another person is to see the face of God." Yes, these are all lyrics conceived by Herbert Kretzmer and set to the emotionally charged music of Claude-Michel Schönberg. These are the thoughts of a great musical. Those not aware of the tale of musical theatre, may be surprised that all of the dialogue is sung, This format is the way of British musicals, based on the strong history of operas in that country. "LES MISÉRABLES" is an epic 1862 French tale by Victor Hugo , considered as one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century. Though long and complex, the basic story line centers on a period in the early nineteenth century, which culminated in the unsuccessful June Rebellion. This is not the larger French Revolution of 1788 that overthrew the absolute monarchy of the Bourbons and the system of aristocratic privileges, as many assume when the word revolution is used in a French story. The plot revolves around Jean Valjean, who was arrested when he stole a loaf of bread to feed his starving nephew. Imprisonment, frustration and moral awareness are pivotal ideas of the story. It is played out in front of the history of France's politics and what is meant by that era's concept of justice. It is fiction broadly entwined within factual and historical events. In 1987 the musical debuted on Broadway, after having played in London. After 6,680 performances spanning sixteen years, it closed in the Big White Way on May 18, 2003, making it one of the longest running Broadway shows. Revivals, tours, and a movie followed that run. This CLE production is where the current tour starts. It is probably why it is so fresh and the cast is energized. The present three-week stay at the State Theatre mirrors the 2018 production, which eliminated the original production's two turntables, reframed the music, reinterpreted some of the songs, added electronic visuals, such as our experiencing Jean Valjean crawling through the sewers as he saves Marius and Javert falling off a bridge into the raging river below. There is less vividness. The battle scene, minus much of the extreme pile of household goods isn't as dramatic, the marching to the barricades isn't as vivid. The lighting is darker, much as the paintings of the period which tended to be painted with less vivid oil colors. This darkness invades the entire production. Some things are the same. I still find the reference to "this one's a Jew and that one's gay," to be unnecessary and offensive. I never have been a lover of "Master of the House" and "Beggars at Feast," which I know fulfills the musical theater formula of being "noisy numbers," inserted mid-first and second acts to excite the audience and keep their attention. The changes, in the scheme of things, don't change the overall power and effect of the show. No one is going to argue with the conceivers and stagers of a show which has been seen by over 70 million people. Both the solos and choral work is outstanding. Thankfully the cast interpreted the meaning of the lyrics rather than just singing words. This was obvious, for example, in "One Day More," the sure-thing show stopper, which was mesmerizing. Nick Cartell , who played the role of Jean Valjean in the last tour, is back again. He still portrays the role with a full musical voice and compassion. His youthful presence has matured, giving more texture to the role. His "Who Am I " and " Bring Him Home " were compelling. Halley Dortch (Fantine), making her touring debut, grabbed the emotions with the plaintive "I Dreamed a Dream." Christine Heesun Hwang was captivating as Eponine and received an extended ovation for her well-nuanced "On My Own." Gregory Lee Rodriguez gives an appealing earnest quality to Marius. His "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" was one of the show's emotional highlights. Harrison Fox was adorable and captivating as the spunky Gavrache. His middle finger salute to Javert after the over-zealous policeman is exposed as a traitor to the student rebels, brought cheers and laughter from the audience. On the other-hand, Preston Truman Boyd , who displays a strong singing voice, was not evil and overpowering enough as Javert. We need to really hate him for his obsession in making life a living hell for Jean Valjean. We need to cheer when his guilt gets the best of him and motivates his jumping to his death. CAPSULE JUDGEMENT: LES MIZ! It is still captivating and is a major piece of the musical theater tapestry which gets an excellent staging at the start of its newest national tour. If you haven't seen it before or need a refresher, get to Playhouse before "One Day More," and get "A Heart Full of Love." For tickets call 216-241-6000 or go to www.playhousesquare.org . LES MIZ runs through October 30, 2022.

Esperance production of Les Miserables musical brings new life to town's theatre scene

A young boy dressed as a French street urchin for the Les Mis production.

Caitlyn Edwards flicks through a glossy booklet, landing on a page showing the many faces who helped bring her dream to life.

It has been just over six months since a country theatre on the south coast of Western Australia played host to one of the most famous musicals on earth.

The Esperance production of Les Miserables – a mainstay of London's West End for almost four decades – is being remembered as the most ambitious and complex theatre project in the town's history.

But, under the direction of Ms Edwards, the community banded together to ensure its success.

"It gave us a huge injection of fresh faces to the theatre," she said.

Thanks to the Les Miserables production — or "Les Mis", as it is affectionately known — the Esperance theatre scene has never been healthier.

A woman holds a copy of a poster for Les Miserables.

'Stood the test of time'

Ms Edwards was introduced to Les Mis through the 2012 film adaption starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

She fell in love with the story, its iconic songs and diverse, "relatable" characters.

It was not long before she saw the musical and read the mammoth, 530,000-word novel by Victor Hugo, published in 1862.

She even embarked on an artistic project that involved painting a scene from the novel for every day of the month.

Set in early 19th century Paris, Les Mis follows the story of Jean Valjean — a French peasant released from prison in a time of revolution — and is a tale of injustice, love, suffering and hope.

A thick yellow book with the words Les Miserables and Victor Hugo in black, and picture of a girl with a broom.

"No matter what kind of mood you're in, there's something to relate to," Ms Edwards said.

One day while backstage at Esperance's historic Bijou Theatre — the oldest purpose-built theatre in WA — fellow thespian Derek Clarke informed her that the rights to Les Mis were available to be purchased.

Her interest was piqued, but the challenge would be the music, with the Bijou too small to accommodate an orchestra pit.

Thankfully, the Esperance Theatre Guild was able to obtain professional recordings of the Les Mis score, which were a "total game changer" for the project.

The exterior of a local theatre painted in white a pale blue, with a sign saying Bijou Theatre.

An information night held early last year suggested community interest in the production would be strong.

"I thought maybe four people would come [the the meeting], and it was really surprising to see the auditorium half full," Ms Edwards said.

"Because Les Mis has been around for so long, so many people have memories associated with it."

A community effort

A typical play held at the Bijou Theatre might involve a total cast and crew of 20-30 people.

The 2023 Les Mis production had a cast of more than 70, and a crew of about 30.

About half of the cast were under the age of 18.

Ms Edwards said one of her goals was to make room for young people to get involved.

"I wanted to have street urchins, I wanted to make sure that kids that wanted to be on stage had the chance to be on stage," she said.

A group of young people dressed in waist coats and white shirts, on stage surrounded by wood boxes.

Thanks to a grant from the Mt Burdett Foundation, an organisation investing in ideas that create a vibrant and resilient rural and regional Western Australia, the theatre was able to employ a professional fight choreographer/intimacy coach and an experienced vocal specialist from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

"It was very obvious by the time we went live that it had made such a difference to where we were at the start," Ms Edwards said.

The foundation's Esperance Community Advisory Committee chair, Megan McDowall, said the Les Mis project was an ideal funding recipient.

"We just like to support people who are passionate about the community and also have the capacity to deliver," she said.

After months of late nights and rehearsal after rehearsal, it was suddenly August and time to perform before an audience.

It soon became clear they had created something special.

"The week before we open, anyone with a pensioners card can come and watch for a gold coin donation," Ms Edwards said.

"We got a standing ovation, and that had never happened to me on stage, or in any show I've been a part of before."

Bright future for historic theatre

Barry Wroth beams with delight as he casts his eyes over the dimly-lit auditorium.

He has attended local productions for decades, and is currently president of the Esperance Theatre Guild.

The keen actor and director said Les Mis was like nothing the town had seen before.

"It was definitely the most ambitious project that any small theatre group could put on," he said.

"You'd walk down the street and the whole town was abuzz."

Photo of a man in a theatre seat

He said participation had not only soared since the production, but the locally owned theatre's finances had been given a much-needed boost.

"For the first time in history, all the tickets were sold out a week before opening," Mr Wroth said.

"It was sensational."

Next year will mark 40 years since the Les Miserables musical debuted in London.

It remains one of the city's most in-demand shows, with Australian performer Josh Piterman currently starring as Jean Valjean in a production at the Sondheim Theatre.

Actors on stage dressed singing

Ms Edwards said the story would continue to resonate with audiences worldwide for many years to come.

"It's full of universal themes," she said.

"And so it's something that has really stood the test of time."

She has already turned her attention to other creative projects based on Victor Hugo's masterpiece.

"It's a love story, but not necessarily in the romantic sense, and it's a story about hope," she said.

"And I think people really connect with that need for hope."

Cannes Competition Title ‘Grand Tour’ Debuts Trailer, Director Miguel Gomes’ Next Film to Be ‘Savagery’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Grand Tour

Variety has been granted exclusive access to the trailer (below) for Portuguese director Miguel Gomes ‘ “Grand Tour,” which will have its world premiere in Cannes Film Festival’s Competition section. Variety can also exclusively reveal that that distribution on “Grand Tour” will be handled in France by Tandem, and in Italy by Lucky Red, and that Gomes’ next film will be “Savagery.”

Popular on Variety

“Grand Tour” is produced by Uma Pedra No Sapato (Portugal) in co-production with Vivo Film (Italy), Shellac Sud (France) and Cinema Defacto (France), in association with The Match Factory (Germany), Rediance (China) and Creatps Inc. (Japan), and with the participation of ZDF/ARTE and RTP.

Gomes was previously in Cannes in 2015 with “Arabian Nights” and in 2021 with “The Tsugua Diaries.” His 2012 film “Tabu” played at the Berlinale.

Speaking to Variety , the film’s producer Filipa Reis explains how the project came together.

It was over dinner with Reis that Gomes first presented his idea for the film, in which narrative sequences shot in a studio would be intercut with footage of contemporary Asia. “The idea was… I don’t know… very appealing and charming,” says Reis, who was a co-producer on “The Tsugua Diaries.” Gomes then asked her to produce it.

The plan was for Gomes to take a small documentary-style crew to seven Asian countries – Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Japan and China – shooting in 16mm so “that we could build this archive and then to write the script according to what was found,” Reis says.

Once those funds were in place, Gomes shot the narrative sequences in studios in Portugal and Italy in early 2023.

Reis says it was a “challenge” to do the Asia trip without a script, adding “it’s not as it’s meant to be in the industry, but it was also very appealing.” She adds that it required “a risk” to be taken to shoot the archive footage before applying to the production funds.

Asked how working with Gomes compares with working other directors, she says: “He’s very unique. And I think to work with him, you really have to be very confident about what he’s doing, because it can be a proposal that’s a bit outside the box compared with the way you are used to doing things, and the way the funds and the industry thinks things are supposed to be done.”

During the studio shoot they had “links to some rough edit archive footage, so that when you read the script, you could understand at least how [the narrative footage] crossed over with the archive,” she says. The narrative sequences are in Portuguese, except for one character who speaks in French. The archive footage is in the language of the country that the crew were shooting in.

Although the story takes place in Asia during a time of imperial rule in many countries colonialism isn’t the theme, Reis says, in contrast to “Tabu.” “I would say that it’s something new. Of course, ‘Tabu’ is a great film, but I think this one will be surprising,” she says, enigmatically.

As to the tone of “Grand Tour,” Reis says that it contains both comedy and tragedy, “but it is also melancholic, and it is courageous.” She adds: “I think it has a lot of emotional elements for us to make a connection with it.”

The film was finished in October, and shown to Cannes in November. A world premiere at Cannes was always “Plan A,” Reis says, adding: “I feel as a producer that it’s where the film is supposed to be, and where Miguel is supposed to be.”

At present no preview screenings are planned, although that may change, and Gomes isn’t doing press interviews before the world premiere. “We would like it if the film was discovered by everyone at the same time,” Reis says. “I’m a bit anxious to see how it will be received, and we are very curious about that. So it would be nice if we could make a surprise and share our enthusiasm and our surprise with the audience.”

Reis says that her next project as a producer will be Gomes’ Brazilian-set film “Savagery,” which will be co-produced by Tatiana Leite in Brazil. Further details about the project will be released at a later date.
