Get Inspired

Get the travel guide, become an insider, tee off like the pros at long island's legendary golf courses.

On the heels now of the 2023 Ryder Cup, the largest and most prestigious golf event in the world, all eyes were on the host city of Rome as Team Europe claimed victory over Team USA. But the global golf spotlight and excitement, which drew in more than 600 million television viewers for the 2023 event, are now shifting to the iconic event’s next destination: Long Island, New York, home of the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Long Island has long been a golfer’s paradise. The region’s relationship with the professional sport dates back to the 1896 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur championships played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (private) in Southampton – and the world’s best golfers have competed here ever since. Shinnecock Hills was also home to the 2018 U.S. Open Championship, while Long Island’s famed Bethpage Black course set the stage for the 2019 PGA Championship.

But the best part is many courses on Long Island are public, so even YOU can tee off where legendary pros have done so for decades. Whether you’re an amateur or aspiring pro, grab your clubs and check out our guide to Long Island’s world-class greens, simulators, and more.

Bethpage State Park Golf Course is one of the most popular golf courses in the nation. It is home to five public 18-hole regulation golf courses, including the world-famous Bethpage Black Course, which has been described as “brutally fun” by expert golfers. Originally designed by notable golf architect A.W. Tillinghast, Bethpage Black has hosted multiple national and internationally renowned PGA Tour events and Championships, so even the best golfers should expect to be put to the ultimate test.

Montauk Downs (Montauk)

Montauk Downs Golf Course was originally developed in 1927 and was redesigned in 1968 by Robert Trent Jones before being purchased by New York State Parks in 1980. The ever-changing wind currents off the ocean and bay add an extra challenge to the way the course plays each day. Open year round, the 18-hole course offers a one-of-a-kind beachfront experience.

Eisenhower Park (East Meadow)

Considered Nassau County’s own “Central Park,” this 930-acre park first earned its reputation as a golfer’s refuge during the ‘20s when it was the five-course Salisbury Golf Club. Today, it is a mecca for sports and leisure fun for all! Visitors can test their skills at the driving range or compete for a winning title on one of the park’s three 18-hole courses. The famed Red Course was designed by 20th-century Golden Age golf architect Devereux Emmet and has ties to PGA Championships and Tour events dating back to 1926. The park’s additional Championship-level courses (White and Blue) were designed by golf architect Robert Trent Jones, whose contributions can be traced across golf courses throughout the nation. Not feeling up to one of the full courses but still want to work on your short game? Stop by one of the park’s two mini-golf courses and test out your putting skills.

Governor Alfred E. Smith Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course (Fort Salonga)

Sunken Meadow State Park Golf

Sunken Meadow State Park features three courses designed by renowned golf course architect Alfred Tull in the early 1960s. The courses may be played as either 9 or 18 holes, and all three courses are known for utilizing the natural topography of its surrounding landscape in their gameplay through hilly woodlands—resulting in a relaxing and unique outdoor experience for all levels of golfers.

Harbor Links (Port Washington)

Harbor Links , built in 1998 and designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, is seated adjacent to Hempstead Harbor, atop rolling hills and long fescues that give the feel of a country-club quality round. Its well-manicured fairways and greens serve players well. With its award-winning 18-hole Championship Course, hidden gem of the 9-hole Executive Course, world-class instructional program, miniature golf and banquet facilities for all occasions, Harbor Links provides everything you desire for a memorable experience.

Christopher Morley Park Golf Course (Roslyn)

Since the 1960s, this nine-hole course has been an excellent place for beginners, or even experienced golfers who just want to play a quick round. The course itself is hilly with large trees but no water features. It’s a relatively straightforward course that offers a relaxed pace of play. The highlight of the course is hole #9, with a big tree hanging over the fairway to challenge your aim. This course is one of five municipal courses in Nassau County; the others are located at Cantiague Park, N. Woodmere Park, Bay Park, and Eisenhower Park.

X-Golf (Commack & Westbury)

X-Golf

A combination indoor golf simulator, restaurant and bar venue, X-Golf touts their tech as the most innovative and accurate golf simulator in the world. Players swing real clubs at real golf balls against a screen projecting famous courses from across the globe. A professional-grade software and hardware package comprising cameras, impact sensors and infrared lasers will calculate the ball’s distance and speed. Whether you’re looking for a unique indoor networking activity, solo lessons to up your golf game in the off season, or a spot to kick back and enjoy with friends and family of all ages, X-Golf, at both the Commack and Westbury locations, has it all: a full bar with beer and cocktails, shareable appetizers, and courses designed for all ages and levels from amateurs to pro athletes.

PGA Tour Superstore (Commack)

A brand-new PGA Tour Superstore is officially open in Commack, NY. This store, now becoming Long Island’s second location for the golfing chain, stands at 39,109 square feet within the Mayfair Shopping Center along Jericho Turnpike. The PGA Tour Superstore chain currently has 55 stores across 21 states in the U.S. This new golfers’ paradise within Commack offers more than just shopping – the store features two club-fitting bays, a putting bay, six practice bays, four simulator bays, and a nearly 1,300-square-foot putting green. Looking to learn the game or improve your skills before getting out on the course? The Superstore also offers lessons and clinics.

A Guide to Long Island Golf Courses Where the Pros Have Competed

KAN16070-XL

There are many quality Long Island golf courses and picking the right one can come down to an assortment of variables based on your location and preferences. One might be in the mood to tee off on a course that’s previously been graced with the presence of golfing’s biggest names.

If that’s what you’re looking for, then you’re in luck because there’s no shortage of courses that have hosted PGA Tournaments and events. Even with such a niche parameter, there are still so many options to choose from, so here’s a list of the eight best courses.

2

1: Bethpage Black

The Bethpage Black course located at Bethpage State Park is one of three Long Island courses to host a major PGA event in the last decade. Bethpage Black hosted the 2019 PGA Championship and its $11 million purse which was won by Brooks Koepka, who owns the course record. Bethpage Black has also hosted the U.S. Open and The Barclays (now called The Northern Trust) and will host the Ryder Cup in 2025. The course, which was designed by Joseph H. Burbeck & A.W. Tillinghast before opening in 1936, is open to the public. Usage of the course costs $65 during the week and $85 on the weekends for all 18 holes. The course rating is 77.5 with 7,468 total yards.

2: Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

One year before the PGA Championships were held at Bethpage Black, Shinnecock Hills hosted the U.S. Open in June 2018. Its $12 million purse is the largest in Long Island History and was also won by Koepka. 2018 was the fifth time that Shinnecock hosted the U.S. Open in its 131-year history. Only five course have hosted the open more and Shinnecock will host its sixth in 2026. The private club is consistently viewed as the best course on Long Island and one of the best in the world as well as one of the oldest and toughest courses in America. The course rating is 74.4 with 6,940 total yards.

3: Glen Oaks Club

The Glen Oaks Club, which was designed by Joe Finger, opened its current Old Westbury course in 1971 and features three 9-hole courses. In 2017, the private club hosted the 51st Northern Trust, which was won by Dustin Johnson. Since its original opening, the club has received multiple overhauls and changes to make the courses what they are today.

4: Garden City Golf Club

Like Shinnecock Hills, the Garden City Golf Club is viewed as one of the best and oldest courses in both Long Island and the country. The club hosted the U.S. Open in 1902, which was one by Laurie Auchterlonie. This was one of the earliest U.S. Open events and just the second to be held on Long Island. The private club, which was designed by Walter Travis and Devereux Emmet, is a men’s-only club located just northeast of Adelphi University. The course rating is 74 with 6,926 total yards.

5: Inwood Country Club

The Inwood Country Club is much more than just a golf club. The private club, which was designed by Dr. William Exton and Arthur Thatcher, was originally established as a 9-hole golf course before expanding to 18 holes and adding tennis and a beach club. In the early parts of the 1920s, the club hosted two major PGA events, the PGA Championship in 1921 and the U.S. Open in 1923. These events were won by Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones respectively. The club hosts multiple golfing events each month while its course rating stands at 72.8 with 6,647 total yards.

6: Eisenhower Red Course

The Eisenhower Red golf course is one of three 18-hole golf courses in East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park. The Red Course, which was designed by Devereux Emmet in 1914, hosted the 1926 PGA Championship, which was also won by Hagen. The Red Course, and the other two located at Eisenhower Park are closed on Mondays and during the winter. In total, the Red Course boasts up to 7,107 total yards.

7: Engineers Country Club

The Engineers Country Club is a private club located along 140 acres in Roslyn Harbor which opened in 1917 and was designed by Herbert Strong and Devereux Emmet. Just two years after opening, the course hosted the 1919 PGA Championship, which was won by Jim Barnes. The Club has also hosted the Long Island PGA Championship in 2016, which is a tournament specifically for PGA members from the Long Island district. The club has undergone several renovations over the last 25 years in order to upgrade their facilities. The course rating is 72.7 with 6,767 total yards.

8: Seawane Club

The Seawane Club is a private club located in Hewlett Harbor that was designed by Devereux Emmet in 1927. The Seawane Club last hosted the Long Island PGA Championship in 2017, which was won by Anthony Aruta. The course has 6,802 total yards.

Leading Golf Retailer Commits to 40,000 SF at Commack, N.Y., Property.

long island pga tour

PGA TOUR Superstore  – the country’s leading specialty retailer for golf and tennis – is continuing its regional expansion with a new location at  Mayfair Shopping Center  in Commack. Commercial real estate services firm  Levin Management Corporation (LMC)  secured the 40,000-square-foot anchor commitment as the property’s exclusive leasing and managing agent.

E.J. Moawad, LMC senior leasing representative, negotiated the transaction on behalf of Mayfair Shopping Center’s ownership; Hugh Scullin of Katz & Associates represented the tenant. The new Commack store marks PGA TOUR Superstore’s third New York location and will open later this year, joining existing stores in Westbury and White Plains.

PGA TOUR Superstore is a one-stop shop for golfers of all skill levels. Staffed with teaching professionals, in-store offerings include state-of-the-art swing simulators, practice and play hitting bays, and a 1,300-square-foot putting green. There is also custom club fitting and repair. Along with equipment and accessories, PGA TOUR Superstore carries the largest selection of men's, women's and juniors' apparel and footwear. Stores also sell tennis and pickleball equipment and accessories, and offer racquet restringing services.

“PGA TOUR Superstore’s customer-experience focus is unmatched in the golf retail business,” said Moawad. “This growing chain brings something completely new and different to Mayfair Shopping Center and undoubtedly will be a tremendous draw for golf and tennis enthusiasts in the community.”

Mayfair Shopping Center sits on heavily traveled Jericho Turnpike, just east of the Sunken Meadow Parkway, drawing 1.7 million visits per year, according to real time traffic data from Placer.ai. The PGA TOUR Superstore commitment continues a period of strong leasing activity at the 222,000-square-foot property.

Mayfair Shopping Center’s newest tenants include top-ranked grocer Lidl, Planet Fitness, The Crushed Olive, Bagel Toasterie and Meet Bar & Izakaya. Another new restaurant, JBBQ & Shabu Shabu, is opening soon. These fresh faces have joined an existing strong lineup of national, regional and local retailers and service providers.

LMC is marketing availabilities ranging from 1,200 up to 21,000 square feet at Mayfair Shopping Center. The property serves a growing residential population of more than 200,000 people within a five-mile radius, and the marketplace offers an average household income of $170,000. More than 38,000 vehicles pass Mayfair Shopping Center each day along Jericho Turnpike.

For seven decades, LMC has served as a trusted single-source commercial real estate services provider for institutional and private owners. Its diversified, retail-focused leasing and management portfolio includes 125 properties totaling almost 16 million square feet in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

AVONDALE, La. — Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair shot a 12-under 60 in better-ball play Saturday to take the third-round lead in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA Tour’s only team event.

At 23-under 193, Fishburn and Blair had a one-stroke lead over Luke List and Henrik Norlander, with the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry — tied for the lead after each of the first two rounds — two strokes back.

Fishburn and Blair, both winless on the PGA Tour, have been playing golf together since their junior high school days in Ogden, Utah.

“It’s kind of why you’re out here playing is to have opportunities like this,” Blair said. “I’ve been out here a handful of years now, so I know that they don’t come that often, and so we’ll do our best to go take advantage of it.”

Fishburn had three birdies and an eagle on the first five holes at wind-swept TPC Louisiana, where the wind gusted to 25 mph. Windy conditions are also expected for Sunday for the alternate-shot finale.

List and Norlander had a 62. List eagled the second and 11th holes.

“We just got in a really good rhythm early,” Norlander said. “I felt like we were both hitting fairways. Not necessarily hitting it really close, but it felt like early we had two chances on every hole.”

McIlroy and Lowry shook off a slow start to birdie seven of their last 12 holes. They shot 64 to join Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, who also had a 64, at 21 under. Canadians Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin topped the group at 20 under.

“Look, it was a tough day,” McIlroy said. “Birdies were a little harder to come by today than they were on Thursday in the better-ball format. I think today was about staying patient knowing that the course was going to present some opportunities, especially on that back nine.”

Fishburn and Blair were a stroke off the tournament record.

“Just kind of rode Fish all day,” Blair said. “He played good. I mean, it was pretty textbook out there for him.”

They made the turn in 7-under 29 and birdied five of the first six holes on the back nine before finishing with three pars.

“It’s pretty easy to hit shots when Zac is always in the fairway, always on the green,” Fishburn said. “We ham-and-egged it really good today.”

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

Scottie Scheffler finishes off another win at RBC Heritage to extend dominant run

Daily Wrap Up

Change Text Size

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A Masters green jacket wasn’t enough for Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler was running on emotional fumes fresh off his four-shot victory at Augusta National Golf Club, but full of purpose that more than made up for his lack of preparation for the RBC Heritage. The result not only was similar, it has come to be expected.

He rarely missed a shot. He gave little hope to those chasing him. And he walked away from Harbour Town Golf Links on Monday morning with another victory that extended a dominance not seen since the peak years of Tiger Woods.

“I didn’t show up here just to have some sort of ceremony and have people tell me congratulations," Scheffler said after polishing off a 3-under 68 for a three-shot victory. "I came here with a purpose."

Victory was inevitable — Scheffler had a five-shot lead with three holes to play when the final round, delayed 2 1/2 hours because of storms Sunday afternoon, was suspended by darkness. It’s starting to feel that way whenever he plays.

Scheffler now has won four of his last five starts, the exception a runner-up finish in the Texas Children's Houston Open when he misread a 5-foot birdie putt that would have forced a playoff.

Scottie Scheffler closes out 72nd hole to cement 10th win at RBC Heritage

He considered this one of the tougher wins because it followed the Masters.

“Coming off the high last week to going into here, not really with a ton of energy, not really with a ton of prep work,” Scheffler said. “I think it’s underrated how difficult it is to do the stuff that Tiger was doing, and win like every single week. It takes a lot out of you emotionally and physically, especially major championships.”

Turns out he had plenty left in the tank.

Scheffler now has 40 consecutive rounds at par or better, a streak that began at East Lake in the TOUR Championship last August. His position at No. 1 in the world is so great that he became the first player since Woods to crack the 15-point average mark.

“It’s very impressive,” Patrick Cantlay said. “He’s played great for a while now — a number of years — and it seems like he is playing the best golf of his life right now.”

The only competition Monday morning was for second place.

The storms brought cold weather and a strong wind. Scheffler missed the 18th green to the right, chipped safely to 18 feet and two-putted for bogey. That ended his streak of 68 consecutive holes with no worse than a par.

“I hit driver, 3-wood into there,” Scheffler said. “So I’m going to count that as a par for myself.”

Sahith Theegala birdied the 16th hole, saved par from a bunker on the par-3 17th and closed with a par for a 68 to finish alone in second.

“Even though I finished second, I felt like I was never really in it to win there. Scottie was just so far ahead,” Theegala said.

Cantlay (68) and U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, who finished his 65 on Sunday before the storms, tied for third.

Scheffler finished at 19-under 265.

The good news for the rest of the PGA TOUR: Scheffler won’t show up again until the PGA Championship the third week in May. He headed back home to Dallas, where his wife his expecting their first child sometime next week.

Scheffler was staked to a one-shot lead starting the final round and chipped in for eagle on the second hole. Before long, he had a four-shot lead and never showed any signs of coming back.

“I got off to a good start yesterday and kind of just kept it going from there,” he said.

The week wasn’t the smoothest start for Scheffler, who was six shots behind after an opening round that included a shank from the bunker on the third hole for a double bogey. He didn’t drop another shot the rest of the week until it no longer mattered.

About the only thing that went wrong for Scheffler was the celebration. His caddie, Ted Scott, went for an elevated chest pump and Scheffler just laughed at him without moving.

About 400 spectators waiting along the 18th fairway were allowed to fill a corner of the grandstands as Scheffler approached. He turned and waved his cap toward them after tapping in his final stroke of another masterpiece.

Such is Scheffler’s dominance that his last seven victories have come against fields that had at least eight of the top 10 players in the world.

The last player to run off a stretch like this — four wins and a runner-up — was Woods at the end of 2007. Woods then won his first three PGA TOUR starts (and one on the DP World Tour) to start 2008.

Scheffler now has 10 titles on the PGA TOUR in a span of 51 tournaments dating to his first victory in the 2022 WM Phoenix Open.

“It does not get boring,” Scheffler said. “I think hitting a really well-struck golf shot close to the pin is like an addicting feeling.”
