ABBA have today announced confirmation of their return for the first time in 40 years, with two new songs, an upcoming complete new album and, in 2022, a revolutionary digital concert spectacular.

The quartet of Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid, one of the most successful pop groups of all time, have not only recorded two new songs available today, “I Still Have Faith In You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down,” but have completed an entire new album, Voyage . They worked on it together at Benny’s studio, Riksmixningsverket, in Stockholm, for release by Universal Music Group on November 5.

‘the beatles’ second album’: the us takeover continues.

ABBA - I Still Have Faith In You

“I Still Have Faith In You,” which has a music video directed by Shynola, is an atmospheric, slow tempo piece that builds dramatically with harmonized choruses and rock guitar accompaniment. “Don’t Shut Me Down” also starts slowly, but soon picks up pace with an infectious beat. Both tracks have the powerful vocals and intelligent lyrics that characterized the group’s songbook in their earlier years together.

The album title mirrors the forthcoming live experience, ABBA Voyage , which will open on May 27, 2022 at the purpose-built ABBA Arena. The state-of-the-art 3,000 capacity arena will be located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Don't Shut Me Down

“It’s been a while since we made music together,” say the four members of ABBA. “Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to The Visitors .

“To tell the truth, the main inspiration to record again comes from our involvement in creating the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of. We’re going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring. Weird and wonderful!”

The concert experience will feature digital versions of ABBA which have been created after weeks and months of motion-capture and performance techniques, involving the four band members and an 850-strong team from George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic. It marks the company’s first venture into music. Pre-registration for tickets opens at 6 pm BST tonight (2) on abbavoyage.com . Tickets go on general sale from next Tuesday, September 7.

The ABBA Voyage concert is made with the help of producer Svana Gisla ( David Bowie Blackstar /“Lazarus,” Beyoncé and Jay Z for HBO, Springsteen and I) ; producer Ludvig Andersson ( And Then We Danced , Yung Lean – “In My Head,” Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) ; director Baillie Walsh ( Flashbacks of a Fool, Being James Bond, Springsteen and I ); co-executive producer Johan Renck ( Spaceman , David Bowie Blackstar /“Lazarus,” Chernobyl ); and choreographer Wayne McGregor CBE (The Royal Ballet, Company Wayne McGregor, Paris Opera Ballet).

“The magic of ABBA and the herculean efforts of this whole magnificent team reaches a long-awaited milestone today,” say Gisla and Andersson. “To be able to finally share this endeavor with the world is a proud moment for us and we can’t wait to welcome you to our arena in East London, a place where we are so happy to be.”

Notes director Walsh: “I watched ABBA win the Eurovision song contest in 1974, and never did I imagine that 47 years later I would be with them on this extraordinary voyage. Life is weird and wonderful sometimes.”

McGregor reflects: “Imagine: growing up in the North of England in the 70s and learning to ballroom, Latin and disco dance to the incredible songs of ABBA. I was 8 and I was totally transported. Fast forward to 2020, being in Sweden and dancing with ABBA – in real life! I was about to be 50 and I was totally transported again. That is the magic of ABBA.

“We have shared many creative and joyful adventures with a bold collaborative team to make the impossible possible for ABBA Voyage : technological wizardry, state-of-the-art immersion, and entertainment innovation,” he continues. “And still at its searing heart we simply have new songs, new moves, classic songs, classic moves: ABBA is DANCE and always will be. See you on the dancefloor.”

Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group, says: “From the very beginning of my career, and having had the privilege to work with them directly for many years since, it’s been a tremendous joy to be surrounded by ABBA and their music. Their boundless creativity and timeless melodies make us want to partner with them on everything they do because we know it will be simply great.”

Tickets for ABBA Voyage will be available from 10 am BST on Sunday (5) for fans who have pre-ordered the album from the official ABBA store, and from 10 am on September 6 for those who have pre-registered. General on-sale commences at 10 am BST on September 7 at abbavoyage.com .

‘Thank you for waiting’

In further comments released today about their return, ABBA add: “To all of you who patiently have followed us in some way or another these past decades: Thank you for waiting – it’s time for a new journey to begin. We simply call it Voyage and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters. With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future. It’s not easy to explain but then it hasn’t been done before.”

Says Benny: “It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me with this project. If it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat. When you come to the arena you will have the four of us together with an absolutely glorious 10-piece band. And even if not in the flesh, we will be right there, thanks to the work of the creative team and ILM.”

Anni-Frid adds: “Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun and when Benny called and asked if I’d consider singing some more I jumped at it! And what songs!! My respect and love go out to these exceptionally talented, truly genius songwriters! Such joy it was to work with the group again. I am so happy with what we have made, and I dearly hope our fans feel the same.”

Agnetha comments: “When we got back together in the studio I had no idea what to expect…but Benny’s recording studio is such a friendly and safe environment, and before I knew it I was really enjoying myself! I can hardly believe that finally, the moment has come to share this with the world!”

Bjorn completes the group’s comments by saying of Agnetha and Anni-Frid: “They’re such amazing singers those two, I was completely floored by the way they delivered those songs. They’re true musicians; totally unimpressed by pop star glamour but still having a great time being creative in a recording studio. The Voyage project has injected new life into us in more ways than one.”

Collectively, ABBA conclude: “So, again, thanks for waiting! We hope to see you in the ABBA Arena and yes – see – because we have infused a good deal of our souls into those avatars. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we’re back.”

Pre-order ABBA’s Voyage ,  which is released by Universal Music Group on November 5.

ABBA Shares First Look into Virtual ‘Voyage’ Concert

by Tina Benitez-Eves November 4, 2021, 10:14 am

ABBA revealed the first look at their 2022 Voyage concert series. The 20-second trailer shows the digital avatars of the Swedish pop quartet of Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad, dancing to their 1978 song “Summer Night City,” donned in futuristic garb in a digitized setting with neon pyramids and other vivid imagery. The trailer comes days before ABBA releases their new album, and first in 40 years, Voyage (Universal Music Group), on Nov. 5.

Videos by American Songwriter

The group first revealed their reunion in September along with a new website, upcoming concerts beginning spring 2022, and new singles “I Still Have Faith in You,” “Don’t Shut Me Down” and a recent third “ Just a Notion ,” a song the group originally recorded in 1978 for their sixth album  Voulez-Vous  in 1979 that never made the cut.

“We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it,” said ABBA said in a statement in September.

look voyage 2022

Along with the release of Voyage, ABBA’s concert series kicks off in London on May 27, 2022, and features the foursome in their avatar forms, or “ABBAtars” (circa 1979), along with a 10-piece live band, at the custom-built “ABBA Arena” at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Producer Ludvig Andersson (Benny’s son) recently explained how the avatars “came to life.”

“Agnetha, Frida, Benny, and Björn got on a stage in front of 160 cameras and almost as many VFX geniuses and they performed every song in this show to perfection over five weeks, capturing every mannerism, every emotion,” said Andersson. “When you see this show it is not a ‘version of’, or a ‘copy of’, it is actually them.”

Abba Returns to the Stage in London. Sort Of.

The Swedish superstars — or digital versions of them, at least — performed on Thursday to 3,000 enthusiastic fans with the help of 140 animators, four body doubles and $175 million.

LONDON — Ecstatic cheers bounced around a specially built 3,000-capacity hexagonal arena Thursday night as the members of Abba — one of pop music’s behemoths — slowly emerged from beneath the stage, their classic ’70s hairstyles leading the way, to play their first concert in over 40 years.

As a synthesizer blared and lights pulsed, the singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad twirled her arms skyward, unveiling a huge cape decorated with gold and fire red feathers, while she sang the slow-burn disco of “ The Visitors .” Benny Andersson, poised at his synth, grinned like he couldn’t believe he was onstage again. Bjorn Ulvaeus, the band’s guitarist, focused on his instrument. Agnetha Faltskog swirled her arms as if in a hippie trance, adding her voice to the chorus.

Soon, Andersson took the mic. “I’m really Benny,” he said. “I just look very good for my age.”

The audience — some already out of their seats dancing, glasses of rosé prosecco in hand — laughed because the comment went straight to the heart of the event. The members of Abba onstage weren’t real; they were meticulous digital re-creations made to look like the group in its 1979 heyday. The real Abba — whose members are all at least 72 years old — was watching from the stands.

Thursday’s concert was the world premiere of Abba Voyage , a 90-minute spectacular that runs in London seven times a week until at least December, with potential to extend until April 2026, when the permission for the Abba Arena expires, with the land being designated for housing.

During the show, the digital avatars — known as Abbatars — performed a set of hits with the help of a 10-piece live band and an array of lights, lasers and special effects. For the Spanish-tinged “ Chiquitita ,” the group sang in front of a solar eclipse. For the stadium disco of “ Summer Night City, ” it appeared in pyramids made of dazzling light, with the rings of Saturn twirling in the background. The avatars also appeared as 30-foot-tall figures on huge screens at the sides of the stage, as if being filmed at a real concert. At points, they started appearing in dozens of places onstage as if in a manic music video.

Baillie Walsh, the show’s director, said the event was meant to be “a sensory overload.”

The project, which Walsh said pushed digital concerts beyond the hologram performances that have made headlines in the past, is the result of years of secretive work, protected by hundreds of nondisclosure agreements. That included five weeks filming the real Abba in motion capture suits in Sweden; four body doubles; endless debates over the set list; and 140 animators from Industrial Light & Magic (known as I.L.M.), a visual effects firm founded by George Lucas that normally works on Hollywood blockbusters.

Svana Gisla and Andersson’s son Ludvig Andersson, the event’s producers, said in an interview last Friday that they had to deal with a host of problems during the eight years they worked to develop the show, including fund-raising challenges and malfunctioning toilets.

“It’s been stressful,” Andersson said, looking exhausted and sucking a mango-flavored vape pen. “But, make no mistake,” he added, “nothing has been more enjoyable than this.”

The idea started around 2014, Gisla said, when she was brought in to help make music videos for the band involving digital avatars, a process that was “a total nightmare,” she said. Around 2016, Simon Fuller, the producer behind the “Idol” franchise and the Spice Girls, suggested a show starring a 3-D version of the group “singing” while backed by a live band. (Fuller is no longer involved.)

The group needed to get creative because Faltskog and Lyngstad had made it clear that they didn’t “want to go on the road,” Andersson told The New York Times in 2021. But the quartet did want to include fresh music in the show, so it reunited in secret to work up a few songs, which became something more: “Voyage,” Abba’s first new album in four decades , released last year.

The team quickly realized that holograms were not up to scratch; nor were a host of other technologies. “We kissed a lot of frogs,” Gisla said. It was only when they met representatives of Industrial Light & Magic that she felt they had found a company capable of making “really convincing digital humans,” who could be “running, spinning, performing in floodlights.” The key, Ulvaeus said in a video interview, is “for them to emotionally connect with an audience.”

During test shoots in fall 2019, the group’s male members “leapt in with no qualms,” Ben Morris, I.L.M.’s creative director, said. (The musicians’ biggest concern? Shaving off their beards. “I was scared what I would find underneath,” Ulvaeus said.) Lyngstad had just had hip surgery and was using a cane. “But we started playing some songs and she slowly slid off the stool, stood up and said, ‘Take my stick away,’” Morris recalled.

The following spring, the band was filmed for five weeks by about 200 cameras in Sweden, as it repeatedly played its hits. The British ballet choreographer Wayne McGregor and four body doubles selected from hundreds of hopefuls looked on, with the intention of learning the band’s every movement, stance and expression so they could mimic its members, then extend their movements to develop the show’s final choreography.

Steve Aplin, I.L.M.’s motion director for the event, said they went through “literally hundreds” of iterations of each avatar to get them right, and also modeled clothes designed by the stylist B. Akerlund. The hardest to achieve was Andersson, he added, since “his personality is the twinkle in his eye.”

While the Abbatars were being developed, the 10-piece band was being formed and Gisla was fund-raising (the final budget was 140 million pounds, or about $175 million, she said), developing an arena capable of handling all the technology and trying to keep the massive project under wraps. A moment of potential jeopardy came in December 2019, when the team submitted a planning application to the London authorities that had the word “Logo” on technical drawings of the building instead of “Abba,” in the hope no one would investigate further.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, a project that “already seemed ludicrous before Covid” became “doubly ludicrous” Gisla said, since she was asking backers to trust the idea that 3,000 people would want to dance next to each other in the near future. Materials for the arena’s sound insulation almost got stuck outside Britain when a ship jammed in the Suez Canal ; the wood for the building’s facade was meant to come from Russia, but was sourced from Germany at increased expense after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Asked what he had gone through while making the project, Walsh replied, “A nervous breakdown,” then laughed.

Abba Voyage is not the only Abba-themed event in London; the long-running “Mamma Mia!” musical in the West End also regularly attracts boozy bachelorette and birthday parties. Gisla said that like a West End show, Abba Voyage would have to sell about 80 percent of its seats to make a profit. Tickets start at £31, or $38, although few of those cheap seats appear available for the initial run. Attendees pay more — starting at $67 — for a spot on a dance floor in front of the stage.

Andersson, the producer, said he obviously hoped Abba Voyage would be a commercial success — as do the members of Abba, who are investors — but he insisted he was happy the team had simply “created something beautiful” after so much toil. Ulvaeus said he wouldn’t be surprised if some of the group’s contemporaries consider a similar undertaking: “If they ask me for advice, of course, I would say, ‘It takes a long time and it’s very expensive.’”

At Thursday’s premiere, the audience was split between invited celebrities in the stands (including Sweden’s king and queen) and members of Abba’s fan club on the dance floor, yet in both sections people hugged in joy at the sound of beloved songs, and danced and sang along. The fact that the band onstage wasn’t the flesh-and-blood originals didn’t seem to matter. For “Waterloo,” the Abbatars simply introduced a huge video of their 1974 Eurovision performance and danced their way offstage as the crowd cheered wildly.

Jarvis Cocker of the band Pulp said he had been left in “a state of confusion” by the show. “I felt very emotional at certain times during that performance, which I’m calling a performance but it wasn’t — it was a projection,” he said. He added, “But I don’t know what it means for the future of mankind.” He suggested avatar shows featuring the Beatles and Elvis Presley wouldn’t be far behind.

The fans outside were too overwhelmed to worry about the show’s implications for the live music industry. Teresa Harle, 55, a postal worker who attended with a friend and ran to the front of the arena to get the best view, said she found the avatars so convincing, she even waved at Faltskog when the show ended.

“It was a once in a lifetime experience,” Harle said, “even though we’re coming again tomorrow, and Saturday.”

Abba reunite for Voyage, first new album in 40 years

Swedish hitmakers to release album of brand new material in November, and digital avatars will appear in London concert residency in 2022

One of the most anticipated comebacks in pop culture has finally come to pass: the return of Abba .

Forty years after the bitter songs written in the wake of two band divorces for their last album, 1981’s The Visitors, the Swedish pop quartet has reunited for Voyage, an album of brand new songs that will be released on 5 November – including, they say, a Christmas song. Two tracks from it, the stately and epic ballad I Still Have Faith in You and the shimmying Don’t Shut Me Down, are out now.

The group – Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus – have also announced a new concert experience in London, also called Voyage, beginning in May 2022. Digital versions of themselves (not holograms, their team asserted) will appear nightly alongside a 10-piece live band at a new 3,000-capacity venue in the city’s Olympic park, called the Abba Arena. Tickets go on general sale on Tuesday 7 September.

Lyngstad said of their reunion: “Such joy it was to work with the group again – I am so happy with what we have made,” and called Andersson and Ulvaeus “exceptionally talented, truly genius songwriters”.

Ulvaeus said of Fältskog and Lyngstad: “I was completely floored by the way they delivered those songs,” with Andersson saying: “I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat.”

Andersson added: “We’re truly sailing in uncharted waters. With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future.”

Abba’s digital avatars were created using motion capture technology, similar to that used by Andy Serkis and others to portray CGI beasts in Hollywood movies: the group was filmed in skintight suits for the lifelike recreations. Wayne McGregor , resident artist at London’s Royal Ballet, choreographed the band’s performance, and an 850-strong team from George Lucas-founded effects company Industrial Light & Magic designed and animated the de-aged avatars from the footage.

McGregor said: “Imagine: growing up in the north of England in the 70s and learning to ballroom, Latin and disco dance to the incredible songs of Abba. I was eight and I was totally transported. Fast forward to 2020, being in Sweden and dancing with Abba – in real life! I was about to be 50 and I was totally transported again. That is the magic of Abba.” He promised “technological wizardry, state of the art immersion and entertainment innovation. And still at its searing heart we simply have new songs, new moves, classic songs, classic moves.”

The footage is directed by film-maker Baillie Walsh, and produced by Johan Renck – best known as the Emmy-winning director of TV miniseries Chernobyl – and Svana Gisla, who worked with Renck on videos for David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar. Also on the creative team is Benny Andersson’s film producer son, Ludwig.

Both the concert and album have been mooted for some time. The avatar concept – or “Abbatars” as Ulvaeus has called them – was announced in 2016 by music manager Simon Fuller (who is not involved with the 2022 iteration). In 2017, Andersson elaborated on the project, saying: “It will take a bit of time, it takes time to digitalise a face. It’s fun that it’s so technologically advanced.” In 2018, a TV show featuring the avatars was announced, co-produced by the BBC and NBC, which has not yet been aired.

The group also announced that meeting up for the project had “an unexpected consequence. We all felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did. And it was like time had stood still and we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!”

Two songs were initially written and recorded, including I Still Have Faith in You, but their release was pushed back to early 2019, then late 2019, but never emerged. Since then the group have continued writing and recording, eventually ending up with a full album of material.

Digitally de-aged avatars of Abba, that will feature in Voyage.

In the interim, their pop cultural heft has continued to grow. The stage musical Mamma Mia! , debuted in 1999, and recently reopened in London’s West End, reintroduced the group’s hits to new generations. A 2008 film version made more than £440m in global box office takings and is an enduring family favourite: it is the UK’s biggest-selling DVD ever. A 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, made £285m globally.

Their ongoing popularity has meant that their 1992 greatest hits collection, Abba Gold, is the longest-running album in the UK album chart. In July, it became the first to surpass 1,000 weeks there, and is currently sitting at No 14.

Long before the musical and movies, however, their song catalogue was already one of the most successful – and brilliant – in all pop music. Having formed in 1972, at the height of their fame in the mid-1970s six out of seven singles in a row reached No 1 in the UK: Fernando, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, Name of the Game and Take a Chance on Me. They had three further No 1s and a total of 19 Top 10 hits.

The reunion also brings two pairs of once-married couples back together. Lyngstad and Andersson were engaged in 1971, the same year that Fältskog and Ulvaeus married, but by 1981, both couples had divorced within a year of each other. Their romantic strife was explored with great candour in songs such as The Winner Takes It All, and in the psychodramas of their final album in 1981.

The group fizzled out in 1983 without an official breakup announcement. In the years since, Fältskog released 12 solo albums, most recently A in 2013; Lyngstad released three albums and made occasional one-off recordings.

Andersson and Ulvaeus co-wrote numerous musicals, including Chess with Tim Rice, and in 2013 they worked with EDM producer Avicii to compose the theme for the Eurovision Song Contest , which they had won with Waterloo in 1974.

The group have long denied they would ever perform live again. In 2014, Lyngstad said: “We only have one answer and that is no … No amount of money would change our minds. Maybe we sometimes say it would be good to do a song together again, just a recording and nothing else.”

In 2016, they did perform one song together at a party to celebrate 50 years of the Andersson-Ulvaeus songwriting partnership: The Way Old Friends Do.

Speaking at a London launch event for Voyage, Ulvaeus said the band was as close as they ever were. “It is incredible to be where we are, no imagination could dream up that. To release a new album after 40 years and to still be the best of friends … to still have a total loyalty. Who has experienced that? Nobody … It is such fun and we have been longing for this for such a long time.”

Why do the project now? “We wanted to do it before we were dead,” he said.

Andersson, also appearing, said the worst of the filming was when they had to shave their beards. “I’ve had mine 50 years.”

Ulvaeus said they chose London to host their live show because “London is the best city to be in when it comes to entertainment, theatre, musicals … We have always felt that the Brits see us as their own.”

Asked what the best thing about being in Abba is, Andersson replied, with refreshing candour: “Not having to worry about the money. You are free to do anything, to keep on writing the music.”

The Star Trek: Voyager documentary To the Journey is one of our most-anticipated things for 2022 . And today we have an exclusive first look at a teaser video.

To the Journey teaser

The team behind a number of excellent Star Trek documentaries including 2018’s What We Left Behind , all about Deep Space Nine are at it again. This time they are focusing on Star Trek: Voyager and after a record-breaking $1.2 million crowd-funding campaign last year, the team has been hard at work filming more interviews, with production set to wrap up soon.

Recently they showed off a teaser during an online backer event, and we have a first look before it is released later to the general public. The video shows the wide array of cast and creatives they have been interviewing, and it demonstrates how they are not avoiding touchy subjects. Check it out…

Pre-orders closing soon

It’s still possible to become a backer for To The Journey and to pre-order the Blu-Ray/DVD Combo or a Digital Download so you can be sure to be one of the first to see the doc. You can also still get your name in the credits. There is also special To The Journey merchandise including a Janeway coffee mug replica. Most pre-orders close on April 15th. Interview: Jeri Ryan On Taking Seven From Borg To Bi Captain Of The Enterprise To ‘Star Trek: Legacy’

I could live without that “bum-bum-bum-bum” stuff at the beginning.

Agreed. If anything, a short song from Picardo would be much better

Man, so much Star Trek coming our way these days! A new documentary and a film on top of all the new shows! Exciting times kids!

While it has never been my favorite show, I always loved Voyager and I always will. I like it more today than when it was on in fact. Just shows the appeal Star Trek shows can still have literally decades later. So I am excited for the documentary. I hope they are able to get it into theaters like they did with “What We Left Behind”. I would happily pay and see that one in the theater too.

I did a complete re-watch of Voyager last year and like you I enjoyed it much more this time around then when I originally saw it in the 90’s. Janeway was a mighty impressive Captain in my opinion and I loved the rest of crew as well.

Yeah I always loved Janeway from the first episode on. It’s not a shock why we have her again in Prodigy. But Voyager as a show, while flawed (but they are all, who are we kidding), delivered a lot of fun and twisty stories. Yes more could’ve been done with its premise for sure but it was still a solid show that really focused on exploration in a way no show ever did. And the cast was great.

I am the only one that is underwhelmed from seeing this given the huge budget they had (especially as compared to the really awesome and great production values DS9 doc)?

This looks like this was done with fake house bluescreens as background and that that actors didn’t even care enough to get themselves looking good for the interviews. I realize that sounds harsh, but man, that’s how it looks.

It’s pretty weird to go out of your way to criticise the way people look after 25+ years.

Is a big budget required? We’re listening to people talk about the past, so how fancy does it need to be? I’ve been watching The Center Seat on IMDBTv over the last couple of weeks, have largely enjoyed it, and not once have I sat there thinking ‘They needed to spend more money on this.’

That’s for One Lion of course.

Please see my follow-up response above. I just don’t get why they couldn’t look a little more presentable, which certainly wasn’t an issue with the DS9 doc.

My opinion only. YMMV

Except that I’m not doing that. What I am criticizing is the unprofessional look of a lot of them — hair, makeup and clothing choices — that were done properly on the DS9 doc. One guy is even wearing shorts, and a couple others look like they just rolled out of bed and threw on some old clothes.

I did a job interview on Zoom during COVID, and I wore my Sunday best and got a haircut. What’s the big deal for them taking the time to look professional like the DS9 group did (and why didn’t the Producers set some professional appearance prep standards for them)? Like I said, it just looks weird how unkempt some of them are.

I can’t help what my eyes see here, dude. I mean, they are career actors — if anyone should know how to prepare to be seen in front of a camera, they should, right? I just find it weird that some of them look so disheveled…my opinion though…everyone can have their own opinion. No worries.

PS: Look how professional George Takei and Robert Picardo look on this…they get it!

It was particularly jarring to see Ethan Phillips speak while chewing gum.

I just want to see them tell their stories. As long as the soundtrack is in sync, I’m good. (I hope that didn’t cost them millions.)

I agree with your point on the actors clothing. For a tribute, even if these actors are not getting paid, it would be nice to see them dress up decently. Some were professional, some were not.

Thanks! I was beginning to worry that I was the only one who had this reaction.

I am with you Lion, I have great hopes for the Doc as I loved the DS9 doc, (this is coming from a documentary filmmaker). However this trailer way be a slight red flag, not that their stories aren’t good, but they skipped a bit on production value and let things slide. Hopefully since they are in production, insight like this gives them time to re-do some stuff or use other takes that may not be as messy. Shaky Camera, chewing gum, its one thing if the project was released for free but they have a budget and are selling, so who knows luckily again they are still in production.

Couldn’t disagree more. It was genuine and honest. Makes me really want to see the completed project. The actors look like the real people they are.

For all the praises about a show having a woman as a captain, three women are missing in this clip so far. Where are Jennifer, Jeri, and Roxane?

Jeri Ryan and Roxane Dawson are definitely in the documentary, but yeah odd they weren’t shown here.

I don’t think Jennifer Lien is involved at all given her issues. But it’s nice they at least mentioned her and over her being fired. Sometimes it feels like she was never on the show at all.

It’s possible they haven’t filmed their segments yet since this is an ongoing production.

I know they were all filmed a year ago for some Voyager cruise. All the actors participated there. But it looks like they don’t want to show much right now and maybe they haven’t sat down for that yet.

Jennifer has been in trouble with the law.

Jennifer is, last I heard, deeply in a mental illness that would make her appearing a nonstarter. It has been discussed/disclosed before that the beginnings of that issue are why she was let go, so maybe that will be in this doc. I hope someday she’s doing better and can give her side of things, but IDK. It’s a hard disease.

Last I heard, Jennifer was suffering from a mental illness that would, no doubt, make her appearing a nonstarter. It’s also been said that the beginnings of that issue was why she was let go in the first place; maybe that will be discussed in the doc… And I hope someday she’s doing well enough to give her side of the story, but it’s a hard disease…

I looked at the link with the sound off and it struck me that Neelix and the Doc seem like they are ready to Jack Lemmon/Ed Asner scenes from JFK, or perhaps a new version of THE ODD COUPLE. I wonder if they ‘rehearsed’ … then again, Picardo can do improv so maybe not necessary. He was apparently so funny as a couple of the aliens on EXPLORERS that the set was busting up all day long, as he’s deliver faux versions of the alien’s lines, like ‘YOU’RE MAKING ME MISS DYNASTY!” (kind of a THE DEADLY YEARS vibe with the visuals.)

i like the casual, conversational approach they seem to be taking with the interviews. It gives the impression we’re hearing from people and not actors. I like that it appears to be an honest, warts and all, conversation about the show. We know we’re going to hear about Bujold, Beltran’s unhappiness with the development of his character, the Lien firing and Jeri Ryan taking over the show. I hope we hear more than negativity though. Doing seven years on a beloved TV franchise can’t be all bad for an actor.

Why haven’t they done one of these for TNG? The cast isn’t getting any younger. Now that Picard has finished production someone should make a doc on the show that started the rejuvenated Trek TV universe.

This has been mentioned in the past and others have pointed the TNG cast has been given tons of things like DVD/Blu Ray interviews etc.

And I think this is the same company that also did Chaos on the Bridge for TNG. It’s not a ‘traditional’ documentary, but it did get one.

I felt the TNG Blu-ray special features were reunion enough… they even had a 50-min panel with the cast on the Season 2 set.

Fair enough. That was my thought on a potential Enterprise documentary. They kind of covered the ups and down on the home video release and the audience for a documentary on the series would be very, very small.

I give it 7 stars out of nine

I hope to learn something new from this documentary. I didn’t learn anything new from the DS9 doc. It was a documentary full of fluff. I don’t want fluff. I want to learn new things about the production, cast, and some juicy stories.

C’mon Garrett, you were not the only male asian series regular on a show in the ’90s. There were way too few, but you weren’t the only one. (Daniel Dae Kim, Sammo Hung, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Russell Wong to name a few.)

I look for ward to the documentary, I loved the previous ones by 455.

Not that I know much about this, but I figured I would check out those actors’ credits from the 90s and see what regular roles they had. See for myself how far off Garrett might be (ala the whole “TOS had the first interracial kiss on TV” claim).

Here’s what I see.

Russel Wong – Vanishing Son (1995), 13 episodes (1 season), not renewed Sammo Hung – Martial Law (1998-1999) , 44 episodes (2 seasons), ended after 2 season Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa – Nash Bridges (1996-1997), 13 episodes, a “main” character according to Wikipedia, who left the show in season 2 Daniel Dae Kim – Crusade (1999), 13 episodes (1 season), not renewed

Russel and Daniel were cast as leads/ensemble mains in shows that didn’t even get a full season order. Cary-Hiroyuki was a “main” character who was in parts of 2 (out of 6) seasons, then was written out. Out of all these, Sammo was the only one to get a lead role in a series to go more than 1 season and that ended after only 2. The rest of their roles were one-offs, guest starring, or similar.

So, I would say that Martial Law is the only other success story for an Asian actor as a main character out of those listed. Obviously this is only a small subset of the potential careers to check for the 90s, but for “successful” TV shows with an Asian main character, so far, Garrett is the only one (on this list). So, even only this far it seems a little bit of an exaggeration on Garrett’s part, but not the best track record for the industry.

I wonder if Garrett will bring up his whole criticizing Berman in public and wondering why he never got to direct an episode thing.

Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa was also a regular in a science-fiction series called “Space Rangers” in the 90’s that I believe lasted for something like 6 episodes before being cancelled.

Wow that pot really was dry back then. It’s pretty sad.

Joel de la Fuente Space Above and Beyond.

It feels like Beltran is throwing shade at Mulgrew because he wanted to work with Bujold, am I reading that wrong? I know he was unhappy on the show, but I was unaware of any issues with Mulgrew.

I wouldn’t put too much credence to what Beltran says, he likes to take any opportunity to stir the pot.

No Beltran has said this many times in the past. And he always includes once Mulgrew came aboard, they got along with each right away and became good working partners. He also said in the past that Bujold wasn’t a good fit to do a TV show and it was a good decision she left the show.

Is Tim Russ ok? He’s always been thin and I know he’s 65 now but he looks as though his clothes are too big for him

Looks great! I didn’t see the DS9 one, and now I want to!

It does look like they deal squarely with all the good and the bad with Voyager. The bad including Bujold’s and Lien’s departures and Beltran’s frustration with the lack of development of the Janeway-Chakotay relationship. The latter is what I had an issue with with Voyager, the way that interesting storylines and developments were introduced and then casually discarded. Also, I just felt they never fully exploited their premise, i.e. being in dangerous space with no Starfleet support. I always thought it should have been more like Battlestar Galactica, with the ship scarred and damaged over time, maybe with components visibly replaced and with some characters replaced or killed off (instead of Kes). It was, after all, supposed to be a 75 year voyage back home.

Apparently, Ron Moore felt the same way and, after DS9 wrapped, argued with Brannon Braga about it. Braga was apparently tasked by Rick Berman to keep the show more like TNG and didn’t want it to be too dark so he rebuffed Moore’s suggestions and Moore ended up quitting the franchise and then doing BSG later.

Despite these qualms, I did really like Voyager. I don’t think it was as great as TOS, TNG, and DS9, but it was wonderful to have the first featured woman captain in ST and I really liked the Janeway, Tuvok, EMH, and Seven characters, and Paris and Torres were enjoyable too. Mulgrew was the definitely the right actress for the job. She is really great. I’m excited to show my daughter Voyager once we wrap up TNG. She likes TNG more while I think my boy likes TOS more so far.

I hope they discuss the missed oportunity to make the “year of hell” an entire Season. One of the biggest mistakes Berman and Braga made to refusing it, like they did on DS9. Sadly VOY had no Ira Steven Behr who justi did it in ds9 against Berman and Bragas orders. The two wanted the entire Dominion-Action carrying within one season. Thanks to Ira it went different.

Hopefully Jennifer Lein, Jeri Ryan, and Roxanne Dawson appear.

I suspect though that Lein will be staying away for legal reasons. Ryan and Dawson both are involved in current Star Trek productions on opposite sides of the camera so there may be a contractural reason why they can’t appear.

I hope they at least are able to say a few words If only so Ethan and the Roberts dont continually mug the camera. Looks like they interviewed Picardo multiple times, LOL.

Picardo is the most interesting, so that’s fine with me. Lien is too busy fighting with cops and exposing herself to children.

  • Goofs The outer airlock hatch is left open for two minutes and twenty seconds, minimum, after the antagonist explosively opens the inner airlock hatch. The air rushes past the individuals in the lock at a high rate of speed, rapidly depressurizing the ship (as evidence by ship warnings declaring emergency oxygen is being released into the ship). This goes on and on, while the heroes spend a lot of time struggling with Zac. In reality, the wind would die down quickly, and a good portion of the ship would be in a severely depressurized atmosphere in a very short time, causing almost immediate loss of consciousness for anyone not holding their breath (which Zac clearly was not doing, as he can be heard grunting and gasping for breath while struggling).

Select a year

  • Lows Only offered to fleet buyers, driver-assistance features cost extra, no hybrid option.
  • Verdict The Voyager is a minivan bargain but sadly isn't available for sale to regular Joes.

What's New for 2022?

The Voyager goes fleet-only for 2022, meaning it's no longer offered for sale to the general public. The base L trim has been dropped, leaving the LX as the only option. The van gains the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, Stow 'n Go second row seats, power sliding rear doors, a power-operated rear liftgate, a new in-cabin air filtration system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel all as standard. A Safety and Premium Group package adds blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, in-dash navigation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Silver Mist is now an available exterior color.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Chrysler Voyager starts at $33,610.

While you'll need to be a fleet customer to order it, the Voyager's value-oriented packaging offers plenty of equipment as standard. Those features include automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels, three-zone manual climate control, and a lot more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

2022 chrysler voyager rear exterior

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score matches that of the Carnival and Odyssey, both chief competitors. For more information about the Voyager's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, automatic climate control, or rear-seat entertainment here, but the Voyager provides the same Stow 'n Go capability that makes the Pacifica so versatile. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So, while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

2022 chrysler voyager interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control are also included but in-dash navigation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display, and SiriusXM radio are optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. For more information about the Voyager's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Available automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Toyota Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

look voyage 2022

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

PARIS, FRANCE - APRIL 03: James Cameron attends the "L'Art De James Cameron - The Art Of James Cameron" Exhibition At La Cinematheque on April 03, 2024 in Paris, France. (Photo by Marc Piasecki/Getty Images)

Gallic cinephiles gave James Cameron a hero’s welcome at a Paris masterclass on Thursday, ushering the action auteur onstage with a reception so thunderous that it shook the filmmaker’s oft-unflappable public demeanor.

“That’s the record,” he said in between laughs and in a show of uncommon giddiness. “That’s the record for the longest applause I’ve ever had in my life. Thank you. This is a high point of my career!”

Popular on Variety

Dreams and Nightmares

While Sigourney Weaver flanked her longtime collaborator at the exhibition’s opening vernissage, “Proxima” director Alice Winocour stepped in to lead the talk. Still, the star actress remained a prime subject of conversation – leading to an endearing connection between the two filmmakers.

After Winocour said that she wrote many of her scripts sitting below a framed photo of Weaver as Ellen Ripley, Cameron revealed he had done the very same, writing “Aliens” for an actress he had yet to meet while taking inspiration from her photo.

And though the sequel’s visual universe built on the designs of H.R. Giger, the incoming director made sure to leave his own mark on the material by introducing the Alien Queen. “I think Giger was a little disappointed that we didn’t hire him,” said Cameron, listing off the various biomechanoid features that made the new villain such chilling addition. “But I had so many ideas about what I could do in that same area.”

“[I remembered a dream] where I went into a dark room with every square inch of the walls and ceiling covered in wasps, and I knew that if I moved or tried to escape, they would attack me dead,” he recalled. “Every horror film must go to the deepest and worst place in the subconscious [because] that’s the point. That’s what you to pay your money for.”

‘Avatar’ and Beyond

Given the event’s reflective and retrospective context, Cameron offered little new information about his three upcoming “Avatar” sequels. However, he reassured the audience that work on Part 3 is coming along for an intended late 2025 release and that the scripts for the subsequent volleys are finished, the designs nearly locked and 3D modeling just about to begin.

As for other pursuits, the filmmaker once again brought up his plans to produce a remake of the 1966 tour-through-the-human-body “ Fantastic Voyage ,” a project Cameron and his partner Jon Landau have toyed with for over a decade.

“We’ve been developing it for a number of years, and we plan to go ahead with it very soon,” Cameron said. “Raquel Welch is not available, but we think we can make a pretty good movie.”

Hope and Dread

Without giving any more specifics, Cameron perhaps offered a thematic clue when describing his appreciation for science fiction as a conduit for both hope and dread.

“Science fiction allows us to imagine futures that can emerge from our present day,” he said. “When ‘Star Wars’ came along, science fiction seemed to suddenly become very upbeat, [all about] entertainment and adventure. But the history has always been about warning, about the misuse of technology and the misuse of science.”

“Who gets to decide what’s good for humanity?” he asked. “Machine intelligence will only be a reflection of us. It’ll be us with all our flaws and all of our potentially evil intentions. Yes, that can be good, but the atomic scientists of the 1930s believed [they would unlock] an infinite power source that would abolish starvation… Instead we got Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Cold War. This is what concerns me.”

Taste for Risk

Reflecting on a career path that began with schlock before building toward some of the highest grossing – and most expensive – films of all time, Cameron saw a clear throughline in his taste for risk.

“The more established you become, the more you risk losing what you’ve already gained,” he said. “But I also think that the greatest risk you can make is not trying something new and different. There’s a tendency, when the budget gets bigger, to start to go for the lowest common denominator – and you cannot do that.”
