TPG's guide to luxury bus travel
Given the ongoing challenges surrounding air travel — ranging from flight delays and cancellations to lost luggage and long airport queues — staying on the ground may be the easiest (and least stressful) way to get from point A to point B. While taking a road trip or traveling by train may take longer than flying, land travel has its benefits.
To start, the slower journey makes it possible to truly appreciate your surroundings, whether you're traveling between forested mountains or past beautiful city skylines. Not to mention, overland options are generally more environmentally friendly and less expensive than flying.
Sticking to ground transportation doesn't mean you have to make major sacrifices on comfort. Even previously cramped options like buses are evolving to attract all kinds of travelers, including those who enjoy a dose of luxury.
Gone are the days of standard buses being the only option for intercity travel. In recent years, luxury buses have emerged to provide travelers with a stylish take on the classic bus journey.
How exactly are luxury buses different from traditional options, and are they a good fit for you? We took a closer look at this elevated transportation option, including a few noteworthy routes, to find out.

What is a luxury bus?
Luxury buses offer a "first-class travel experience that combines the luxury and personal space of a private jet with the affordability and convenience of a motorcoach," according to The Jet , one of several luxury bus companies that launched in recent years.
Unlike regular buses, luxury options provide several comforts and services more commonly found in the first-class cabin of an airplane.
For example, more space is available between seats, as they're typically arranged in a 1-2 setup across aisles. As a result, you'll enjoy plenty of legroom and space for reclining your seat and using fold-out tables for work or snacking.
Additionally, luxury buses come with a number of conveniences, including free high-speed Wi-Fi as well as complimentary snacks and beverages. You'll also have access to a clean bathroom facility, plus various TV-viewing options and attendant services (on select routes).

Why should you take a luxury bus?
There are several reasons why a luxury bus may be the way to go the next time you travel.
To start, there's the price. A bus ride (even a luxury one) generally costs a fraction of what you would pay for a flight and transportation to and from an airport.
Then there's the convenience of using buses. Intercity buses typically depart from depots in city centers and often offer additional connections at rail and airport terminals, making them easy to reach. Plus, there are no security lines to endure, and you are not required to check in an hour before departure. If you're traveling with luggage, all you have to do is place your bag in the cargo area before you board.
Depending on where you're traveling, you may also find that buses are a more efficient way to reach your destination, as some cities do not offer flight or rail service. They're more environmentally friendly than driving your own car or flying, too, so you can feel good about your journey.
Why should you consider a luxury bus specifically? There is plenty of space as well as amenities on board. If you value having extra elbow room, enjoy creature comforts like snacks and drinks while in transit and want to pay the cheapest price possible, then you'll likely find a luxury bus appealing.
Which luxury bus routes should you consider?
The majority of luxury buses operate between major metropolitan areas and popular tourist destinations. While New York City is a hub for many luxury bus routes, others depart from places such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, Houston and Dallas.
There are numerous routes to consider for luxury bus travel, but three in particular stand out from others currently available.
The Jet: New York City to Washington, DC
The Jet luxury bus service runs its route between New York's Hudson Yards and Washington 's Metro Center six days a week. Offering enough space to accommodate a maximum of 14 people, The Jet provides passengers with lots of legroom at their wide seats. Each seat features a specially designed "motion-canceling" technology called HoverSeat designed to absorb all the bumps you may encounter during the ride.
While traveling to the nation's capital, you'll have access to free high-speed Wi-Fi and a restroom with high-end details reminiscent of what you'd find in a hotel bathroom (such as white subway tiles and black brass fixtures). Plus, you'll receive complimentary beverages (think: sodas, coffee, beer and wine) as well as snacks such as chips and trail mix from an onboard attendant. Bus tickets also include two free checked bags and two carry-on bags .
Traveling from New York to Washington takes about four hours and 15 minutes, and prices start at $99 for a one-way trip. Specific seats are available for reservation in advance.
Vonlane: Houston to Austin
Vonlane offers 22-person luxury buses for travel within Texas. While you'll find routes connecting several major cities in the Lone Star State — including Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio — the Houston-to-Austin itinerary is an especially popular option.
As you ride on a Vonlane bus, you can stay connected with free Wi-Fi from the comfort of an oversized leather seat that also features an extended recline and leg rest. You'll also enjoy complimentary food and drinks served by an onboard attendant; keep in mind that alcohol costs extra. Loaner noise-canceling headphones are free to borrow, as are items such as eye masks, neck pillows, blankets and phone and computer chargers.
The trip from Houston to Austin typically takes two hours and 45 minutes, and it costs at least $114 one-way.
Napaway: Washington, DC, to Nashville
For travel between Washington and Nashville, there's Napaway — a luxury bus operator with overnight sleeper coaches. Passengers book one of 18 "personal suites," which feature two seats that convert into lie-flat beds with memory foam mattress pads. Napaway also provides pillows and blankets for the trip.
Standard amenities include high-speed Wi-Fi, a selection of movies and TV shows to watch from personal devices, fold-out desks and sleep kits with eye masks, toothbrushes and earplugs. Complimentary bottled water is also available, though that's the extent of Napaway's onboard food and beverage options.
The 11-hour overnight Napaway itinerary departs Washington at 10 p.m. on Fridays and arrives in Nashville at 8 a.m. on Saturdays. Tickets cost a minimum of $125 for the one-way trip.
Bottom line
Most people don't consider bus travel to be a luxury experience thanks, in part, to the extra time it adds to the journey. However, several recently launched companies now provide more comfortable and upscale ways to hit the road.
Sure, you'll need to pay a little more for a luxury bus ticket than one in a regular coach, but the service is still an affordable option when compared to flying. Plus, you'll enjoy many of the same amenities you would receive at the front of a plane. So, you don't have to worry about squeezing into a tight space without the necessities to keep you comfortable.

Yes, you can travel in luxury on a bus: A few bus lines around the country are providing luxury bus service on intercity routes up to about 300 miles, especially in areas where air and rail service is either sparse or expensive. To qualify as “luxury,” my primary requirement is that a line must provide one-by two seating, with extra legroom, in a full size intercity bus, along with an onboard lavatory, Wi-Fi and/or streaming TV, snack/drink service, and no-fee baggage checking. That’s all typically much more comfortable than a plane, and sometimes more comfortable than Amtrak. Fares are around double regular bus fares, because the lines fit only 22 to 35 seats into buses that nominally hold 55 to 60 seats, in addition to extra passenger amenities.
I found 10 lines that qualify, listed here alphabetically, with samples of posted one-way fares. Most lines employ capacity-controlled pricing: As buses fill up, fares for remaining seats increase. Most lines also offer a variety of round-trip, multi-ride, frequent-traveler membership, student, and similar discounts. Most require reservations, and pick up and leave travelers on public-street loading zones, or sometimes at hotels.
Editors’ Note: Included fares are accurate at time of publication.
9 Tips to Finally Stop Overpacking
BestBus is one of the many bus lines that operate between New York City and the Washington, D.C. area. Although most of its trips use conventional intercity buses, one or two daily trips feature “Prime” service that offers the necessary luxury mix. At least one trip operates most days nonstop between New York Penn Station and Washington-area drop off points at DuPont Circle and Union Station and three stops in suburban Virginia. The Prime fare for February starts at around $47 one-way, compared with $38-40 for the regular service; trips take four hours and more.
Amtrak offers frequent competition, with trips taking from a bit under three hours (Acela, from $155) to 3:30 hours (Northeast Regional, hovering around at $115 with fares below $100 available on specific dates).
C&J Bus Lines
C&J operates at least two daily trips, all with luxury buses, on two main routes:
- Connecting Boston with Dover, Portsmouth, and Seabrook New Hampshire. Trips take 55 minutes to Seabrook, at $13.99, to 1:30 to 2 hours to Dover at $14.99, and on average 1:15 to 1:30 to Portsmouth at $14.99.
- Connecting New York with Andover, Massachusetts as well as Seabrook and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Trips take 4 hours to Andover, fares are $74. Trips to Seabrook take between 4:30 and 4:45 and trips to Portsmouth take roughly 5:15, fares for both are $84.
Concord Coach Lines
Concord operates several trunk routes, but offers its luxury “Plus Bus” on one daily round trip each on its route connecting New York City with Portland, Maine (6 hours, $79).
Amtrak connects New York with Portland, but a train trip requires changing trains and stations in Boston. The shortest connection for a trip in early March takes six hours and costs $84, including bus transfer between stations in Boston. Competitive air service to Portland for a similar time frame starts at $45 one way.
10 Tips for Long-Distance Amtrak Trips
Dartmouth Coach
Dartmouth Coach operates luxury bus trips at least once daily with extra weekend service between New York City and Hanover/Dartmouth and Lebanon, New Hampshire. Trips take about five hours; fares start at $89. This company is affiliated with Concord Coach Lines and appears to offer a similar luxury product. Dartmouth also operates from the Boston area, but only with conventional buses.
Amtrak does not go near Dartmouth or Lebanon. Flights from New York to Lebanon start at around $134 one way, and require about four hours with a plane change at Boston.
Hampton Jitney
The Hampton Jitney operates between New York and the main eastern Long Island centers, including three to four daily luxury “Ambassador” service trips to/from Montauk, with additional trips to/from Amagansett. Montauk trips take 3:15; fares start at roughly $45.
The competition to the Hamptons is the Long Island Rail Road Montauk line. Montauk trips take 3:15 and cost $22.25 off-peak, $30.50 peak.
Red Coach operates a complex network linking Miami with Tallahassee while also serving key intermediate stops. Although it also operates conventional buses, Red Coach operates luxury First Class runs several times daily between Miami and Tallahassee via Orlando. Miami-Tallahassee trips take about nine and a half hours, with fares starting at $99; Orlando-Miami trips take about 4 hours with fares starting at $45.
Red Coach competes with Amtrak, Brightline, and Tri-Met between some South Florida stops, but no rail line operates to/from Tallahassee or between Atlanta and Florida. Miami-Tallahassee nonstop flight fares start at roughly $150 round trip, taking two hours nonstop or over five hours with a layover.
7 Essential Multipurpose Tools for Travel
Tripper Bus Elite
Tripper Bus is one of the many lines that operate between New York City and the Washington DC area. The line runs between two and seven trips each day, and on most days one of those trips uses a luxury “Elite” bus. Trips run between New York City Penn Station area and stops in suburban Bethesda and Arlington. Travel time is 4:00 hours; Elite class fares start around $60, compared with regular fares which start at $27. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak and airline competition.
Vamoose Gold
Vamoose is yet another New York-to-Washington bus line that operates a luxury service. “Gold Bus” trips operate three to four times per day between midtown Manhattan and stops in Bethesda, Maryland, and Arlington and Lorton, Virginia. The trips take 4:00 to 4:30 hours to/from Bethesda; 4:40 to/from Arlington; and 5:00 to 5:30 to/from Lorton. Gold Bus fares start at $79, depending on time of day; regular fares start at $49. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak and airline competition.
Vonlane operates an extensive network of all-luxury bus routes connecting Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, and San Antonio. All stops are at city-center hotels except for Dallas, where the terminal is at a Love Field hotel. Sample fares from Houston to Fort Worth are $129; the trip takes four hours.
All Vonlane routes are serviced by multiple airlines, including Southwest. Sample nonstop airfares for Houston-Dallas in late February start at $154 one way, decreasing to under $100 for select dates in March. Amtrak operates one train daily between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth and one train daily Dallas-Austin-San Antonio. Coach fares Dallas-San Antonio start at $37 for a 10-hour trip.
The 16 Best Car Rental Booking Sites
Washington Deluxe
Washington Deluxe is the fourth (on my list) New York-Washington bus line that offers a deluxe option. “LUX” buses operate less than daily between New York/Penn Station and Washington/DuPont Circle. The trip takes 4:00 to 4:30; the fare starts at $35. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak competition.

Hawaiian Explorer (8 Days)
The tour was much better than I expected as I hadn’t done a group tour for years. Robert was on the ball and gave us excellent tips and advice and kept us moving so we were all timely. The accommodation was great (I should have paid extra and had an ocean view - didn’t realise it was an option) and the organized meals were fine.

The Northern California Itinerary is wonderful. It ranges from the big city, to the forest to the smaller bay communities. The accommodations were top notch. The meal choice venues were excellent. Our guide, Robert Lehua and driver Angel, were both so knowledgeable about the area. They were both so engaging. We would definitely recommend Trafalgar and hope to join them for more vacations.

Wonders of the American West (Classic, 10 Days)
Appreciated the tour director and driver . Schedule was good as well as accommodations. I especially liked that we were able to attend dinner and program by native Navajos and that we got to talk with them. It would have been great to have even more time that night. Would also like to have had more time at one stop where the Navajos were set up to sell items they had made. Overall it was a great tour.

A very good, well-thought-out tour.

What people love about luxury coach / bus tours in usa.
Great tour guide, Michael M. Great hotels. Wish we had more time on the beach, for swim and that we would stop for photo op. Too bad for Maui fires, we would have loved to go to the other side of island- the stay in Kauea was hurried and rush/rush.
It was great. Tough schedule but I liked it.

Air Travel Got You Down? Luxury Buses Ramp Up Style and Comfort
Bus travel is being reinvented to feel more like first class.
Veronica Stoddart,
The expense and hassles of air travel have many people turning instead to the open road. But hours behind the wheel can be exhausting. There is another way: You can take a bus.
In fact, several lines have set out to prove that bus travel doesn’t have to be cramped and uncomfortable. They feature amenities you might find in first-class plane cabins, such as plush reclining seats; abundant space between rows; free internet, TV and movies; foldout tables; free snacks and drinks; onboard attendants and even private mini-suites with lie-flat beds.

The Jet , a bus service that launched in 2021, connecting Washington, D.C., and New York City ($99–$199 one way), is a good example. Just 19 passengers sit in rows 6 feet apart, a spaciousness that is rare for bus travel. The reclining seats are made with gel and memory foam and something called motion-canceling technology that makes the highway ride feel more smooth. “It really is a game changer, especially for seniors,” says founder and CEO Chad Scarborough. “It eliminates all the bumps and motion sickness. We had a passenger with sciatica, and she only travels with us now.”
One more breakthrough is enhanced Wi-Fi, billed as the fastest in mass transit, which lets you stream away while an attendant serves free snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine. Scarborough says frustration with plane travel helped create the opportunity for luxury bus service: “We tried to eliminate every pain point — no crowded stations, no long security lines, no waiting in line at all.”
With a plan to launch a D.C.-New York-Boston route early next year, Napaway boasts flat-sleeper buses with convertible private “pods.”
“Driving yourself is fatiguing, and you can’t get anything else done,” says founder and CEO Daniel Aronov. “Flying takes at least five to six hours door-to-door for even a short journey, with security, delays, crowds. The regular bus is crowded, and trains can be expensive.” What’s more, says Aronov, bus travel is relatively green.
Other lines providing a premium experience with fewer, more comfortable seats include RedCoach , serving 14 cities in Florida and eight in Texas; and Vonlane, serving five cities in Texas, plus Atlanta, Nashville and Memphis.
Award-winning travel writer Veronica Stoddart is the former travel editor of USA Today . She has written for dozens of travel publications and websites.

Think bus journeys mean being cramped and uncomfortable? Think again. Although buses have historically been widely used for transportation in many regions, they have often been viewed as a less favored option in the United States. However, a host of new luxury bus companies are changing the scripts with their comfortable and convenient services. They may even be posing a threat to airlines.
We’ll run through how luxury buses differ from standard bus services and what to expect from them, along with some of the best options available for travelers and how to book your tickets.
What are luxury buses?
Like a standard bus service, luxury buses take you from A to B on a road vehicle with other passengers. But they do so while giving you a deluxe experience.
Unlike basic bus services like Greyhound’s, luxury buses are designed for those who want to travel in comfort.
They always offer a comfortable bathroom on board, sport fewer seats than budget buses, and offer wider, more comfortable seats with more legroom. They’re likely also to boast some of the following features:
- Free complimentary items (e.g., blankets, pillows, refreshments, toiletries)
- Generous baggage policy
- Wide reclining seats or seats that turn into beds
- Motion-canceling technology in the seats
- High-speed WiFi
- Privacy screens or curtains
- Entertainment libraries or streaming services
Why are travelers choosing luxury buses?
The convenience of avoiding lines.
When opting for a luxury service, many travelers find buses become a more enjoyable and comfortable experience than using a plane . There’s no long queue, strenuous security process, or turning up hours in advance. Just turn up at the station fifteen minutes before departure and wait to board your bus. It couldn’t be simpler.
Next-level comfort
Luxury buses are a game-changer for the industry, which has been investing in offering more comfortable rides to customers who want to travel comfortably and avoid the nuisance of flying. With luxury buses often being more comfortable than airplanes , with wider seats and extra legroom, passengers are finding a more practical and efficient way to travel.
Although journeys on buses take longer than plane trips on paper, the difference is often marginal after accounting for time spent waiting at airports.
Plus, you get to see more of the local scenery as you travel. Or, if you’d prefer, you can sleep undisrupted from the get-go (instead of having to force yourself to stay awake while you wait for the airport to announce your boarding gate has opened).
Cost-efficient option
Taking a trip with a luxury bus is ofter more affordable than flying. Even the pricier bus fares rarely go significantly over $100, while plane tickets can easily cost $300 or $400 in the US.
Another factor is the environmental benefits compared to other transport options, such as planes. For example, flying from Austin to Houston emits 61 kg of CO2 when using a plane, yet the same journey emits just 9kg when traveling by bus.
Finally, since luxury buses are a lot more readily available now, they’re a genuine option for consumers.

Luxury bus services in the US
See the value in luxury bus services?
Let’s look at four of the most popular US services in more detail:
Vamoose Gold
The Jet is a luxury coach company that’s taking the US by storm. Don’t be fooled by the name — The Jet is very much a bus service, although it gets its name because it aims to provide a luxury experience that mirrors not standard airplanes but private jets. Far from the typical crowded experience on buses, each vehicle has just 14 passengers.
It’s also known for its “motion-canceling technology,” designed by none other than BOSE to provide a transport version of its noise-canceling tech. As a result, the seats have a combination of gel foam and memory foam and an incline designed to soothe you to sleep.
Other luxury features include access to refreshments onboard, including wine and coffee, access to a lavatory, and fast WiFi . Additionally, there is a minimum age requirement of six years old in place to ensure that adults can enjoy a peaceful journey.
The Jet operates just one journey currently (Washington to NYC – Manhattan), which takes around four hours and runs most days. Although the company currently only runs between New York and Washington, it has plans to add more routes in the future. Philadelphia and Baltimore are the top priorities.
- Washington to New York
- New York City to Washington
While The Jet is a new company, RedCoach already has 14 years of history under its belt — over that time, it has carried more than two million passengers.
RedCoach is a bus company that operates routes within Texas and Florida (but not between the two), with new routes being added frequently. It has departures every day, making it a convenient choice for people looking to travel around the two states.
There are three different bus classes depending on whether your priority is comfort or cost. If you want a true luxury experience, the best option is its first-class service. First-class buses have only 27 seats, which are 21 inches wide (compared to the 56 seats that are 16 inches wide you’ll find on the economy service). All chairs are reclinable and the coaches also have perks like toilets, WiFi, electrical outlets, and computer tables.
- Miami to Orlando
- Dallas to Austin
- Dallas to Houston
- Many more routes within Miami and Texas
Vamoose is a coach company that covers New York, Maryland, and Virginia, with a history dating back to 2004. While most Vamoose trips are more akin to standard bus journeys than luxury, it also offers the Vamoose Gold Bus service to the luxury segment.
A Vamoose Gold bus consists of 34 wide, reclining leather seats with additional legroom. A major perk for solo travelers is that there are 12 single-seat rows, with the seat taking a 2-1 configuration.
Buses also have reading lights, power outlets, WiFi, and complimentary bottled water — in addition to standard Vamoose perks, such as luggage assistance and flexible ticket changes.
- New York to Washington
- New York to Bethesda, Maryland
- New York to Arlington
- New York to Lorton
Last but not least, we have Tufesa , a Mexican bus company that also covers the US. Like many other Latin American countries, bus travel is a popular option in Mexico, and the company is now bringing its premier service to the States.
The company has different categories of buses, so if you’re looking for the most comfortable option, choose the Platinum Service, which offers 2:1 configuration, extra reclining seats, vast legroom, and spacious bathrooms.
All Tufesa buses have toilets on board and comfortable seats, along with air conditioning for those hot California days. However, there is no WiFi, power outlets or snacks, so it’s not quite on the same level as some of the buses on this list.
Tufesa has some fantastic bus routes, focusing on California but also visiting adjacent regions, such as Arizona and Nevada. Plus, there are trips from the US to Tijuana, Mexico — though if you want to take cross-border trips, there are additional boarding requirements to keep in mind for a smooth journey.
Unfortunately, Tufesa timetables are less easy to access online than those of other services, and most of the information is in Spanish. It can therefore be tough to understand how to book a ticket when using the official site.
This is where services like Busbud come in useful. To remove these obstacles, we have aggregated all the information from Tufesa (along with other services) into one easy-to-use interface. You can also buy your tickets directly from us for maximum convenience.

How to book a luxury bus service
If you think a luxury bus service could be the right fit for your next trip, the only thing left is to book your tickets. When there are multiple companies operating different routes, it can be challenging to figure out which option is right for you.
Using a centralized site like Busbud fixes this problem. Busbud pulls information and routes from each of these services and allows you to compare them and plan your route with one simple tool. Just choose where you want to go and the desired date and time, and Busbud will give you a wide selection of options.
You can then purchase your tickets straight away, it just a few clicks. And if you ever travel outside of the US, you can use Busbud to book your bus and train tickets in over 80 countries, all in your own language and currency.

Can I change my travel plans?
There is no fee to modify a reservation but you may be subject to a fare difference if modified to a date less than seven days from your date of modification. Please note, trips modified inside 2 hours of a departure can only be modified once and are no longer eligible for future travel credits or modifications. You can login to your account at vonlane.com to modify trips departing greater than two hours in the future or call, chat online, or email your modification request to [email protected] . If you simply cancel your existing trip and purchase a new trip, your credit card will be charged for a second booking. Yes, all Vonlane tickets are fully refundable as long as you cancel 24 hours prior to the first leg of your trip. Tickets cancelled inside of 24 hours and prior to 2 hours before the departure time are re-usable for future travel at a value equal to the original fare paid. Trips booked within 24 hours of departure are not refundable to the purchaser's credit card.

When traveling with Vonlane, the only additional fee you may incur is if you choose to park your personal vehicle. Our terminal locations offer parking fees that are competitive with typical airport parking fees; therefore, you can still plan to pay less overall for your entire trip.
Are there baggage restrictions?
In order to ensure all passengers are accommodated, please limit your luggage to 2 bags of 50 pounds or less and 1 carry-on bag.
Is there a restroom?
Yes, every Vonlane Passenger First motor coach has a full restroom for your convenience. Unlike the airlines, you won't be sharing it with more than 100 people. Our coaches only hold 22 passengers.
Can pets travel?
Small dogs, weighing less than 10 pounds , in a carry-case that can fit by a passenger's legs, are allowed on a Vonlane coach. The carry-case must be fully enclosed and the dog fully secured in the case. The case is not permitted on any table, seat, or in the coach aisle. The case, with dog inside, must remain quietly on the floor by the passenger’s feet throughout the trip. The carry-case must not impede the personal space of any other passenger, their seat, or leg rest. Dogs that cannot remain quietly in the carry-case should not be brought aboard and passengers with loud animals may be asked to disembark the coach at a rest area. This is strictly enforced by our attendants. Cats and other animals are not allowed aboard the motor coaches.
Service animals that are "trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability" are allowed aboard without being in an animal carrier. All service animals must be harnessed and controlled by the passenger at all times. Vonlane adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA does not cover emotional support dogs. Therefore, emotional support dogs that cannot adhere to the pet policy above cannot travel aboard Vonlane. For reference, you can view FAQs published by www.ada.gov at www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html

Companies Are Betting Big On Luxury Bus Travel
They've been popular in asia and latin america for years, but will they finally catch on in the u.s..
Buses don’t exactly have the best reputation in the U.S. In a lot of cities, service is too infrequent to be convenient, and a lack of dedicated bus lanes means they’re often no faster than simply driving. And while services such as Greyhound and Megabus offer relatively affordable trips between cities, they’re not exactly glamorous. But what if you could take a luxury coach instead? Would that actually change how Americans are willing to travel?
Related Content
That’s the subject of this recent New York Times article that we highly recommend checking out . The gist is that several new companies, including Red Coach, Vonlane and the Jet, believe they can convince Americans to take a fancy bus instead of flying or driving. And they truly are fancy.
We’re talking spacious, reclining seats. Hi-speed Wi-Fi that actually works (unlike on my last trip on a Megabus). And in Napaway’s case, lay-flat beds that should make overnight trips much more relaxing. They don’t pack passengers in, either. One Napaway bus in the article has only 18 seats, and it still ran its route even though only six passengers bought tickets. Oh, and the ticket only cost $125.
Does the ride from, in this case, Nashville to Washington D.C. take longer than flying? Of course. But Napaway’s bet is that if you can get a full night’s sleep on a memory foam mattress over the course of the 10+-hour overnight trip, the convenience will be worth the tradeoff.
And let’s not pretend like flying only includes the time spent on the plane. Last time I flew home, that required almost two hours of driving to the airport, getting there at least an hour before takeoff to account for going through security and getting to the gate before boarding, one flight to Chicago, an hour-long layover, one flight to Detroit, and about a 30-minute drive to my apartment.
Oh, and let’s not forget the cramped seats, turbulence that limited bathroom access, and the passenger next to me who wanted to talk about fentanyl overdoses and kids these days. An overnight bus ride with a lay-flat bed would have added a couple of hours to my trip, but I won’t pretend the concept isn’t appealing.
There’s also another benefit for luxury coach passengers: age minimums. While you may have to put up with crying infants for hours at a time, Napaway and Jet require children to be at least eight and six, respectively. “I’m very sympathetic to parents. But right now, for the comfort of the other passengers, we have an age minimum,” Napaway founder and CEO Dan Aronov told The New York Times .
So what do you think? If luxury coach travel ever expands enough to offer the routes you need, would you be willing to take the bus? Or would you rather stick to flying or driving?

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro
2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video
The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.
The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.
Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.
The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean
To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
