“Are we there yet?”

If you’ve driven Interstate 90 across South Dakota, chances are good that either you thought this a couple of times or your kids said it a couple thousand times. Maybe you were the kid saying it on a family road trip years ago.

Let’s be honest, I-90 is not the most exciting stretch of highway in the US. If you like a good cross-country road trip, like we do, this drive is probably inevitable. 

Along your drive, you’re sure to see a few things: rolling hills, grass, cows and signs for Wall Drug.

Wait, what? Signs for a drug store in the middle of nowhere? You might be thinking, “Why would I want to stop at a drugstore?”

Just keep watching those Wall Drug signs. They beg you to stop for many things: free ice water, five cent coffee, jackalopes and a giant T. Rex, just to name a few.

Wall may not be a big town with a lot to do, but it is a nice stop in an area that doesn’t have many options. If nothing else, it is a good place for you to stretch your legs and for the kids to burn off some energy.

We have visited Wall three times in nine years, including using it as a base for visiting Badlands National Park and Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. The other two visits we were just passing through.

Believe it or not, Wall Drug alone can keep you occupied for a couple of hours. The nearby national park sites can keep you occupied for a couple of days. Whether you are just looking for a place to sleep for the night or you’re exploring the nearby history and natural wonders, Wall is a great place to visit!

Wall Drug and Water

According to the store’s pamphlet, when the Hustead’s first bought Wall Drug in 1931, business was bad. Real bad. It took nearly five years before Mrs. Hustead came up with the idea that would eventually save their store.

Her idea? Free ice-cold water. Mrs. Hustead knew that as folks drove across the hot, dry plains, a free cup of cold water would be too much to pass up.

The next weekend, Mr. Hustead and his son put signs up along the highway advertising free ice water. By the time they returned to the store, their marketing was already working. The Hustead’s stayed busy the rest of the day passing out glasses of free ice water, filling water jugs and even selling a few ice cream cones.

Their idea to draw travelers in with free water didn’t just work, it thrived! And Wall Drug has been thriving ever since.

You can still get free ice water. And coffee for five cents. And just about anything else you can imagine.

Wall Drug Today

Wall Drug is still owned and operated by the Hustead family, but the store has grown, now taking up most of a city block and drawing roughly two million visitors each year. Inside you’ll find just about every traditional (and tacky) souvenir you can think of. And many more you could never have imagined!

At The Emporium, you can get t-shirts, magnets, snacks and much more.

The Wall Drug Mall includes more than 10 different stores selling jewelry, books, clothing and Western art. You’ll even find The Traveler’s Chapel in the mall.

In the new Backyard Mall, kids will love the giant jackalope, dancing water, a mining & panning area and an arcade. We, of course, had to battle it out at the Shooting Gallery. Sadly, there was no scoreboard, so we’ll just assume that I won.

The Wall Drug Cafe serves burgers, hot roast beef and scrumptious pie. I will admit that after several trips to Wall Drug, the cafe is still overwhelming with all the different places to order and the number of people. We found the quiet Prairie Food Parlor in the backyard more our style.

And, of course, there is a pharmacy.

The Rest of Town

So, what else is there to do in Wall? Not much, honestly.

There is one main drag with a few other touristy shops selling t-shirts, art and jewelry. You’ll also find a few motels and a couple of campgrounds.

Where to Eat

According to TripAdvisor, there are a total of eight “restaurants” in town. This includes the only two fast food options, Subway and Dairy Queen, and two Wall Drug listings.

Our favorite place to eat is the Badlands Saloon and Grille. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the dive bar we remembered from 2012 has been completely renovated and turned into a family-friendly restaurant. The menu is still limited (burgers and pizza being the main staples), but they offer a full bar, so we weren’t complaining.

On our stop in 2020, we ate at the Red Rock Restaurant and the Three Amigos Cantina and were pleasantly surprised by both.

Red Rocks Restaurant had some tasty locally-sourced beef, so Grant got a burger and Bonnie got steak tips. Both we quite good. Three Amigos Cantina seemed to be just getting started as a business and were a bit unprepared for the folks they had in the restaurant when we ate there. Still, the food was good and the service was friendly if a bit slow.

We ate at the BBQ joint on a past trip. It appeared to be closed this time around. I’ll just say that I wasn’t surprised.

There is also a small grocery store where you can stock up on the basics.

Where to Stay

After three trips, we still have never stayed in a hotel in Wall. We’ve always camped.

On the first trip, we tent-camped at Arrow Campground. I don’t remember much about that campground, but I do know that the second time around we stayed at Sleepy Hollow Campground (also tent camping).

We chose Sleepy Hollow again for this trip, in our travel trailer.

Both campgrounds are on the west side of town, near the railroad tracks. We did not hear the train on this most recent trip but have heard it in the past. Be aware that it is close by, but it’s not something that you need to be concerned about.

The sites at Sleepy Hollow are all pull-throughs. Our site was perfectly level…woohoo! It appeared that other sites were as well.

Sleepy Hollow does have a wide array of hookups available, all scattered throughout the campground. You can get just about any mix of services you want. Water and electric (30 or 50 amp) are standard. Sewer and cable are also available.

The campground is within easy walking distance of Wall Drug and the main drag of town.

If you prefer a hotel, there are 11 to choose from.

Nearby National Park Sites

Within an hour of Wall, you’ll find two fabulous national park sites: Badlands National Park and Minuteman Missile National Historic Site.

I know the 62 official National Parks get all the attention, but don’t overlook the 350+ other sites operated by the National Park Service. Among these sites, you’ll find bits of US history that you didn’t learn in school (or maybe that you’ve since forgotten).

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Want to visit the inside of a nuclear-missile control center? Minuteman Missile NHS lets you do just that! See… I told you those other 350 national park sites were pretty cool.

We first visited Minuteman Missile NHS in 2012, when the Visitor Center was just a small mobile home trailer.

The new, modern Visitor Center is just about 20 minutes east of Wall, right off I-90, so we couldn’t resist stopping and checking it out. Here you will find all kinds of information about the Cold War and the nuclear arms race. The exhibits are nicely done. Sadly, the timing was not right for us to see the 30-minute film.

While at the Visitor Center, be sure to sign up for a tour of the Delta-01 Launch Control Facility. The ranger-guided tour will take you down into the underground launch center, where two Air Force officers worked, ready to launch missiles on a moments notice.

You can also visit the silo at Delta-09, where you can view a Minutemen II training missile from above.

Even if you think you aren’t interested in the Cold War, I suggest you stop. You’ll probably enjoy it more than you think you will… I know I did!

Badlands National Park

With one of the world’s richest fossil beds and some of the country’s most interesting landscapes, Badlands NP sometimes feels other-worldly. Its remote location brings with it a vast night sky.

While Badlands may not get as much hype as Yellowstone or Yosemite, it is still a beautiful park and a fabulous place to visit. The colorful ruggedness and vast history found here is simply unique.

You can easily spend a day or two driving the scenic loop road, hiking and visiting the paleontology lab. Dawn and dusk are the best times to see the vibrant colors and avoid the scorching summer heat.

There are a few camping and lodging opportunities within the park, but you’ll find more options in Wall. The Pinnacles entrance to Badlands NP is located less than 10 miles south of town, so even driving in for sunrise photos is doable. Yes, we speak from experience here.

Final Thoughts on Wall, S outh Dakota

If you want to stay in a real town (albeit a small one) while visiting the Badlands, Wall is probably your best option. If you’re just passing through, you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Me? I agree with Bill Bryson. It’s a tremendously tacky and touristy place, but it’s still great! And there is nothing like it anywhere else. At least not that I’ve seen or heard about.

Wall Drug may not be a must-see place on the same scale as the Grand Canyon or the Eiffel Tower. But, it is certainly a unique place with a quirkiness all its own.

You’ll likely see signs for Wall Drug for MANY miles. We saw our first one more than 350 miles away. Apparently, there’s even a sign in Antartica (I’d love to see that myself one day)!

My guess is that the signs themselves will eventually convince you to stop… You’ll simply have to see what all the fuss is about.

History of Wall Drug

One of the world’s most well-known tourist attractions, it’s hard to believe Wall Drug Store got its start with something many wouldn’t even turn their heads at today … the promise of free ice water. But in fact, the Husteads turned free ice water into a million-dollar idea with a little determination, quick thinking and a lot of signs.

Signs with catchy jingles like “Get a soda . . . Get a root beer . . . turn next corner . . . Just as near . . . To Highway 16 & 14. . . Free Ice Water. . . Wall Drug” drew weary travelers into the small-town drug store to enjoy a refreshing break. Today, more than 2 million visitors a year stop at the popular roadside attraction for a meal or activity, 5 cent coffee, and ice water – which is still free.

Located in Wall, South Dakota, Wall Drug has always been a popular stop on the road to the more populated areas like Mount Rushmore or Rapid City. As a matter of fact, when the United States Air Force operated the Minuteman missile silos east of Wall, the Hustead family offered free coffee and donuts to the service personnel as they traveled to and from Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. Wall Drug honors the men and women in the armed services by providing them free coffee and donuts to this day.

The Story of Wall Drug as told by Ted Hustead

The beginning.

It was December 1931. Dorothy and I had just bought the only drugstore in a town called Wall on the edge of the South Dakota Badlands. We'd been open a few days, and business had been bad.

I stood shivering on the wooden sidewalk. In this little prairie town there were only 326 people, 326 poor people.

Most of them were farmers who'd been wiped out either by the Depression or drought.

Christmas was coming, but there was no snow, no sparkling lights — just viciously cold air. Out on the prairie the cold wind whipped up dust devils. I could see a Tin Lizzie chugging along the two-laner. Suitcases were strapped to the running boards. Someone's going home for the holidays, I thought to myself. I wished they would stop, just for a cup of coffee, but they didn't. Here on Main Street, no one was out.

When I went back inside, I turned the light off over the soda fountain and joined Dorothy and our four-year-old son Billy in our "apartment", a room we'd made by stretching a blanket across the back of the store.

I had graduated pharmacy school in 1929, and after two years of working for other druggists, I knew that Dorothy and I had to find our own store. My father had just died, and he'd left me a $3,000 legacy. I'd work with that.

We were living in Canova, South Dakota, when we began our search, covering Nebraska and South Dakota in our Model T. As we searched, we were sure of two things: we wanted to be in a small town, and we wanted the town to have a Catholic church. In Canova, the nearest parish was 20 miles away. We wanted to be able to go to mass every day.

In Wall, where the drugstore was for sale, we found both a small town and a Catholic church. And when we talked to the priest, the doctor and the banker, they all told us that Wall was a good place with good people and that they wanted us to come live there.

Dorothy and I were excited about Wall, but when we got back home and told our families about the plan, we found them skeptical.

"That town is in the middle of nowhere," a cousin said, "and furthermore, everybody there is flat broke busted."

My father-in-law was understanding, but even he said, "You know, Wall is just about as Godforsaken as you can get."

The first few months went by and business didn't improve. "I don't mind being poor, " Dorothy said to me. "But I wonder if we can use our talents to their fullest here in Wall."

When Dorothy spoke of talents, my heart sank. My wife had a teaching degree and had taught literature in a Sioux Falls high school. Was I being fair, making her work in this prairie drugstore?

But the next minute Dorothy said, "We shouldn't get down, Ted. I'm sure we can use our abilities fully here. We can make this place work!"

Dorothy's optimism lifted me. I said to her, "Five years, Dorothy, that's what I think we should give to this store. Five good years, and if it doesn't work by then, we will. .."

"Don't worry about then," said Dorothy. "We'll make it go. And just think, Ted, pretty soon that monument at Mount Rushmore will be done, and then there will be an endless stream of people going by. I'm sure they'll visit us!"

I Saw the Sign

We weren't starving, it's true, and we'd begun to make good friends in Wall. Our pastor, Father John Connolly, had become a tower of strength, helping us keep our faith strong. And we had worked hard to serve our neighbors well. Filling prescriptions for a sick child or an ailing farmer made me feel that I was doing something good. I also studied some veterinary medicine on my own so that I could help out farmers when their stock were ill.

But all of this didn't seem to be enough. I still spent too many hours looking out the store window for customers who never showed up. I felt I was wasting too much of my life watching people pass by. Maybe, as Dorothy's father had said, Wall was Godforsaken.

By the time the summer of 1936 came around, our business hadn't grown much at all. Our five-year trial would be up in December. What would we do then? Along with nine-year-old Billy, Dorothy and I now had a one-month-old daughter, Mary Elizabeth. What hardships was I putting them in store for?

One hot Sunday in July, though, a great change swept us up. It started quietly, in the deadening heat of an early afternoon, when Dorothy said to me, "You don't need me here, Ted. I'm going to put Billy and the baby down for a nap and maybe take one myself."

I minded the empty store. I swatted flies with a rolled-up newspaper. I stood in the door, and no matter where I looked, there was no shade, because the sun was so high and fierce.

An hour later Dorothy came back.

"Too hot to sleep?" I asked.

"No, it wasn't the heat that kept me awake," Dorothy said. "It was all the cars going by on Route 16A. The jalopies just about shook the house to pieces."

"That's too bad," I said.

"No, because you know what, Ted? I think I finally saw how we can get all those travelers to come to our store."

"And how's that?" I asked.

"Well, now what is it that those travelers really want after driving across that hot prairie? They're thirsty. They want water. Ice cold water! Now we've got plenty of ice and water. Why don't we put up signs on the highway telling people to come here for free ice water? Listen, I even made up a few lines for the sign:

"Get a soda . . . Get a root beer . . . turn next corner . . . Just as near . . . To Highway 16 & 14. . . Free Ice Water. . . Wall Drug."

It wasn't Wordsworth, but I was willing to give it a try. During the next few days a high school boy and I put together some signs. We modeled them after the old Burma Shave highway signs. Each phrase of Dorothy's little poem went on a 12 by 36 inch board. We'd space the boards out so the people could read them as they drove.

The next weekend the boy and I went out to the highway and put up our signs for free ice water. I must admit that I felt somewhat silly doing it, but by the time I got back to the store, people had already begun showing up for their ice water. Dorothy was running all around to keep up. I pitched in alongside her.

"Five glasses of ice water, please," a father called out.

"May I have a glass for Grandma?" a boy asked. "She's in the car."

We ran through our supply of cracked ice. I began chiseling more off the block.

"Say, good sir," one traveler said in a Scottish brogue, "we're going all the way to Yellowstone Park.

Would you mind filling this jug with your water?"

"Hey this free ice water is a great idea," said a salesman, sidling up onto a stool. "How about selling me an ice cream cone?"

For hours we poured gallons of ice water, made ice cream cones and gave highway directions. When the travelers started on their way again, refreshed and ready for new adventures, they gave us hearty thanks.

When the day was done, Dorothy and I were pooped. We sat in front of the store, watching the sun set, feeling a cool breeze come in off the prairie. In the summer twilight, Wall looked radiant. It looked like a good place to call home.

"Well, Ted," Dorothy said to me, "I guess the ice water signs worked."

They surely did work, and we've never really been lonely for customers since then. The next summer we had to hire eight girls to help us, and now that the store is in the good hands of Rick Hustead, Wall Drug draws up to twenty thousand people on a good summer day.

Free Ice Water. It brought us Husteads a long way and it taught me my greatest lesson, and that's that there's absolutely no place on God's earth that's Godforsaken. No matter where you live, you can succeed, because wherever you are, you can reach out to other people with something that they need!

Wall is a progressive community of 800 year-round residents. Located just 50 miles east of Rapid City, S.D., on Interstate 90, Wall's major industries are agriculture and tourism and the community is bolstered by the large sales tax base and the major nearby South Dakota attractions, such as Wall Drug and the Badlands National Park.

City services include a 3,500-foot hard surface runway at the airport; a community library; a park with a playground, swimming pool, a walking/bicycling path, tennis and volleyball courts, and picnic shelters; and various other amenities. Both the fire department and ambulance services have first-class equipment and many dedicated volunteers.

Wall, South Dakota boasts state-of-the-art facilities, outstanding customer service providers, an excellent health services clinic, and a variety of community organizations. The City and Chamber of Commerce offices are located in the Wall Community Center. The Community Center provides a grand hall and meeting rooms for conferences, seminars, and dances and is where American Legion Post #246 holds its meetings.

There are two locally-owned utility cooperatives serving Wall and the surrounding area; main offices of both companies are located in Wall. West River Electric Association provides the community with electrical service, and Golden West Telecommunications provides state-of-the-art telephone service, cable television, and high-speed internet service.

Wall services include four churches, a post office, nine-hole golf course, meat processing plant, grocery store, hardware store, laundromat, flower shop, funeral home, weekly newspaper, rodeo grounds, trap shooting range, financial services, and short-term housing options.

The Community of Wall is a major trade center for farmers and ranchers in the area. Wall benefits from the production of abundant agricultural products such as wheat, hay, and beef. Various businesses, Interstate 90, and DM&E Railroad all help to support the agricultural industry.

Wall also contains museums, motels, campgrounds, B&Bs, restaurants, auto/gas services, gift shops, attractions, and activities to support our thriving tourism industry.

The National Grasslands Visitor Center is a splendid place that makes for a fun and educational visit in Wall for the entire family. Free for all ages, the visitor center features a well-kept exhibit room that offers insights into the ecology and natural history of National Grasslands and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. The immersive exhibits and displays explore local flora and fauna, grazing management, various ecosystems, tourism, local life, and much more. It also hosts interesting programs and events from time to time.

Located off Interstate 90, this little museum explores an important piece of local history. Through a collection of exhibits and artifacts, Wounded Knee: The Museum serves as a fitting memorial to the ones who lost their lives at Wounded Knee Creek in 1890. Here, visitors can gain knowledge about the incident as well as learn about the Native American history of the region, while knowing the timeline of the events that took place here.

What started in 1931 as a drugstore offering free ice water to travelers, is now one of the most popular tourist stops in the Badlands. Although Wall Drug is a working drug store, it also offers an assortment of oddball attractions that draw car after car to the shop. From a life-sized animated T-Rex to Old West recreations, there is always something worth stopping for. Get a bite to eat at Western Art Gallery Restaurant or pull up a chair at the old-fashioned soda fountain. Of course, the Mall is also the place to buy handcrafted Badlands souvenirs.

In the 1960s, the USA installed multiple Minuteman 1B missile launch sites to prevent Russia from a nuclear strike. Today, there are only about 400 such activated sites across the country. The Delta-09 Missile Silo was deactivated and now serves as a unique attraction in the town of Wall. Located right off the highway, passers by can stop to witness this unique piece of American history and learn more about its functioning and maintenance. The site offers self-guided tours around the silos.

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota and features one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Inhabited for 11,000 years by Native Americans and used as their hunting grounds, the area consists of acres of pinnacles, eroded buttes, and spires along with mixed patches of grass prairie. Ancient animals such as the saber-toothed cat once roamed here, while bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets (the most endangered land mammal in North America) dwell in the park today. From lodging to camping and hiking, there are plenty of opportunities for the adventurer to explore the breathtaking scenery.

Established in 1999, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site highlights the importance of the Cold War between United States and Soviet Union that stretched between 1947 and 1991. The site preserves certain war-related artifacts like a launch control center, a missile and such. The site signifies the importance of harmony and peace between nations and therefore, is a rich experience.

Driving through the Badlands Natural Park is an amazing experience if you love nature and wildlife. From strange rock formations, rolling prairies and an abundance of wildlife, it is a truly unique natural wonder. One of the best, and easiest ways to experience the park is via the Loop Road, or Highway 240. Travelling through takes around 60 minutes, without stops. Taking the time to stop and get out is worth it, the overlook points afford stunning views across this incredible landscape especially during sunrise and sunset, when the entire landscape is awash in an orange-golden glow. Buffalo Gap National Grassland is one of the largest stretches of nationally protected grasslands which stretches out in the form of badlands and prairie vegetation. Under the purview of the Nebraska National Forest Department, these grasslands are known for being the habitat of many species of flora and fauna of which the black-footed ferret is the most significant. The national park has a visitor's center with a theater where presentations on America's grasslands are shown upon request.
