Yes, you can travel in luxury on a bus: A few bus lines around the country are providing luxury bus service on intercity routes up to about 300 miles, especially in areas where air and rail service is either sparse or expensive. To qualify as “luxury,” my primary requirement is that a line must provide one-by two seating, with extra legroom, in a full size intercity bus, along with an onboard lavatory, Wi-Fi and/or streaming TV, snack/drink service, and no-fee baggage checking. That’s all typically much more comfortable than a plane, and sometimes more comfortable than Amtrak. Fares are around double regular bus fares, because the lines fit only 22 to 35 seats into buses that nominally hold 55 to 60 seats, in addition to extra passenger amenities.

I found 10 lines that qualify, listed here alphabetically, with samples of posted one-way fares. Most lines employ capacity-controlled pricing: As buses fill up, fares for remaining seats increase. Most lines also offer a variety of round-trip, multi-ride, frequent-traveler membership, student, and similar discounts. Most require reservations, and pick up and leave travelers on public-street loading zones, or sometimes at hotels.

Editors’ Note: Included fares are accurate at time of publication.

9 Tips to Finally Stop Overpacking

BestBus is one of the many bus lines that operate between New York City and the Washington, D.C. area. Although most of its trips use conventional intercity buses, one or two daily trips feature “Prime” service that offers the necessary luxury mix. At least one trip operates most days nonstop between New York Penn Station and Washington-area drop off points at DuPont Circle and Union Station and three stops in suburban Virginia. The Prime fare for February starts at around $47 one-way, compared with $38-40 for the regular service; trips take four hours and more.

Amtrak offers frequent competition, with trips taking from a bit under three hours (Acela, from $155) to 3:30 hours (Northeast Regional, hovering around at $115 with fares below $100 available on specific dates).

C&J Bus Lines

C&J operates at least two daily trips, all with luxury buses, on two main routes:

  • Connecting Boston with Dover, Portsmouth, and Seabrook New Hampshire. Trips take 55 minutes to Seabrook, at $13.99, to 1:30 to 2 hours to Dover at $14.99, and on average 1:15 to 1:30 to Portsmouth at $14.99.
  • Connecting New York with Andover, Massachusetts as well as Seabrook and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Trips take 4 hours to Andover, fares are $74. Trips to Seabrook take between 4:30 and 4:45 and trips to Portsmouth take roughly 5:15, fares for both are $84.

Concord Coach Lines

Concord operates several trunk routes, but offers its luxury “Plus Bus” on one daily round trip each on its route connecting New York City with Portland, Maine (6 hours, $79).

Amtrak connects New York with Portland, but a train trip requires changing trains and stations in Boston. The shortest connection for a trip in early March takes six hours and costs $84, including bus transfer between stations in Boston. Competitive air service to Portland for a similar time frame starts at $45 one way.

10 Tips for Long-Distance Amtrak Trips

Dartmouth Coach

Dartmouth Coach operates luxury bus trips at least once daily with extra weekend service between New York City and Hanover/Dartmouth and Lebanon, New Hampshire. Trips take about five hours; fares start at $89. This company is affiliated with Concord Coach Lines and appears to offer a similar luxury product. Dartmouth also operates from the Boston area, but only with conventional buses.

Amtrak does not go near Dartmouth or Lebanon. Flights from New York to Lebanon start at around $134 one way, and require about four hours with a plane change at Boston.

Hampton Jitney

The Hampton Jitney operates between New York and the main eastern Long Island centers, including three to four daily luxury “Ambassador” service trips to/from Montauk, with additional trips to/from Amagansett. Montauk trips take 3:15; fares start at roughly $45.

The competition to the Hamptons is the Long Island Rail Road Montauk line. Montauk trips take 3:15 and cost $22.25 off-peak, $30.50 peak.

Interior of a luxury bus

Red Coach operates a complex network linking Miami with Tallahassee while also serving key intermediate stops. Although it also operates conventional buses, Red Coach operates luxury First Class runs several times daily between Miami and Tallahassee via Orlando. Miami-Tallahassee trips take about nine and a half hours, with fares starting at $99; Orlando-Miami trips take about 4 hours with fares starting at $45.

Red Coach competes with Amtrak, Brightline, and Tri-Met between some South Florida stops, but no rail line operates to/from Tallahassee or between Atlanta and Florida. Miami-Tallahassee nonstop flight fares start at roughly $150 round trip, taking two hours nonstop or over five hours with a layover.

7 Essential Multipurpose Tools for Travel

Tripper Bus Elite

Tripper Bus is one of the many lines that operate between New York City and the Washington DC area. The line runs between two and seven trips each day, and on most days one of those trips uses a luxury “Elite” bus. Trips run between New York City Penn Station area and stops in suburban Bethesda and  Arlington. Travel time is 4:00 hours; Elite class fares start around $60, compared with regular fares which start at $27. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak and airline competition.

Vamoose Gold

Vamoose is yet another New York-to-Washington bus line that operates a luxury service. “Gold Bus” trips operate three to four times per day between midtown Manhattan and stops in Bethesda, Maryland, and Arlington and Lorton, Virginia. The trips take 4:00 to 4:30 hours to/from Bethesda; 4:40 to/from Arlington; and 5:00 to 5:30 to/from Lorton. Gold Bus fares start at $79, depending on time of day; regular fares start at $49. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak and airline competition.

Vonlane operates an extensive network of all-luxury bus routes connecting Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, and San Antonio. All stops are at city-center hotels except for Dallas, where the terminal is at a Love Field hotel. Sample fares from Houston to Fort Worth are $129; the trip takes four hours.

All Vonlane routes are serviced by multiple airlines, including Southwest. Sample nonstop airfares for Houston-Dallas in late February start at $154 one way, decreasing to under $100 for select dates in March. Amtrak operates one train daily between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth and one train daily Dallas-Austin-San Antonio. Coach fares Dallas-San Antonio start at $37 for a 10-hour trip.

The 16 Best Car Rental Booking Sites

Washington Deluxe

Washington Deluxe is the fourth (on my list) New York-Washington bus line that offers a deluxe option. “LUX” buses operate less than daily between New York/Penn Station and Washington/DuPont Circle. The trip takes 4:00 to 4:30; the fare starts at $35. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak competition.

TPG's guide to luxury bus travel

Bill Fink

Given the ongoing challenges surrounding air travel — ranging from flight delays and cancellations to lost luggage and long airport queues — staying on the ground may be the easiest (and least stressful) way to get from point A to point B. While taking a road trip or traveling by train may take longer than flying, land travel has its benefits.

To start, the slower journey makes it possible to truly appreciate your surroundings, whether you're traveling between forested mountains or past beautiful city skylines. Not to mention, overland options are generally more environmentally friendly and less expensive than flying.

Sticking to ground transportation doesn't mean you have to make major sacrifices on comfort. Even previously cramped options like buses are evolving to attract all kinds of travelers, including those who enjoy a dose of luxury.

Gone are the days of standard buses being the only option for intercity travel. In recent years, luxury buses have emerged to provide travelers with a stylish take on the classic bus journey.

How exactly are luxury buses different from traditional options, and are they a good fit for you? We took a closer look at this elevated transportation option, including a few noteworthy routes, to find out.

What is a luxury bus?

luxury coach travel

Luxury buses offer a "first-class travel experience that combines the luxury and personal space of a private jet with the affordability and convenience of a motorcoach," according to The Jet , one of several luxury bus companies that launched in recent years.

Unlike regular buses, luxury options provide several comforts and services more commonly found in the first-class cabin of an airplane.

For example, more space is available between seats, as they're typically arranged in a 1-2 setup across aisles. As a result, you'll enjoy plenty of legroom and space for reclining your seat and using fold-out tables for work or snacking.

Additionally, luxury buses come with a number of conveniences, including free high-speed Wi-Fi as well as complimentary snacks and beverages. You'll also have access to a clean bathroom facility, plus various TV-viewing options and attendant services (on select routes).

Why should you take a luxury bus?

luxury coach travel

There are several reasons why a luxury bus may be the way to go the next time you travel.

To start, there's the price. A bus ride (even a luxury one) generally costs a fraction of what you would pay for a flight and transportation to and from an airport.

Then there's the convenience of using buses. Intercity buses typically depart from depots in city centers and often offer additional connections at rail and airport terminals, making them easy to reach. Plus, there are no security lines to endure, and you are not required to check in an hour before departure. If you're traveling with luggage, all you have to do is place your bag in the cargo area before you board.

Depending on where you're traveling, you may also find that buses are a more efficient way to reach your destination, as some cities do not offer flight or rail service. They're more environmentally friendly than driving your own car or flying, too, so you can feel good about your journey.

Why should you consider a luxury bus specifically? There is plenty of space as well as amenities on board. If you value having extra elbow room, enjoy creature comforts like snacks and drinks while in transit and want to pay the cheapest price possible, then you'll likely find a luxury bus appealing.

Which luxury bus routes should you consider?

luxury coach travel

The majority of luxury buses operate between major metropolitan areas and popular tourist destinations. While New York City is a hub for many luxury bus routes, others depart from places such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, Houston and Dallas.

There are numerous routes to consider for luxury bus travel, but three in particular stand out from others currently available.

The Jet: New York City to Washington, DC

The Jet luxury bus service runs its route between New York's Hudson Yards and Washington 's Metro Center six days a week. Offering enough space to accommodate a maximum of 14 people, The Jet provides passengers with lots of legroom at their wide seats. Each seat features a specially designed "motion-canceling" technology called HoverSeat designed to absorb all the bumps you may encounter during the ride.

While traveling to the nation's capital, you'll have access to free high-speed Wi-Fi and a restroom with high-end details reminiscent of what you'd find in a hotel bathroom (such as white subway tiles and black brass fixtures). Plus, you'll receive complimentary beverages (think: sodas, coffee, beer and wine) as well as snacks such as chips and trail mix from an onboard attendant. Bus tickets also include two free checked bags and two carry-on bags .

Traveling from New York to Washington takes about four hours and 15 minutes, and prices start at $99 for a one-way trip. Specific seats are available for reservation in advance.

Vonlane: Houston to Austin

Vonlane offers 22-person luxury buses for travel within Texas. While you'll find routes connecting several major cities in the Lone Star State — including Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio — the Houston-to-Austin itinerary is an especially popular option.

As you ride on a Vonlane bus, you can stay connected with free Wi-Fi from the comfort of an oversized leather seat that also features an extended recline and leg rest. You'll also enjoy complimentary food and drinks served by an onboard attendant; keep in mind that alcohol costs extra. Loaner noise-canceling headphones are free to borrow, as are items such as eye masks, neck pillows, blankets and phone and computer chargers.

The trip from Houston to Austin typically takes two hours and 45 minutes, and it costs at least $114 one-way.

Napaway: Washington, DC, to Nashville

For travel between Washington and Nashville, there's Napaway — a luxury bus operator with overnight sleeper coaches. Passengers book one of 18 "personal suites," which feature two seats that convert into lie-flat beds with memory foam mattress pads. Napaway also provides pillows and blankets for the trip.

Standard amenities include high-speed Wi-Fi, a selection of movies and TV shows to watch from personal devices, fold-out desks and sleep kits with eye masks, toothbrushes and earplugs. Complimentary bottled water is also available, though that's the extent of Napaway's onboard food and beverage options.

The 11-hour overnight Napaway itinerary departs Washington at 10 p.m. on Fridays and arrives in Nashville at 8 a.m. on Saturdays. Tickets cost a minimum of $125 for the one-way trip.

Bottom line

Most people don't consider bus travel to be a luxury experience thanks, in part, to the extra time it adds to the journey. However, several recently launched companies now provide more comfortable and upscale ways to hit the road.

Sure, you'll need to pay a little more for a luxury bus ticket than one in a regular coach, but the service is still an affordable option when compared to flying. Plus, you'll enjoy many of the same amenities you would receive at the front of a plane. So, you don't have to worry about squeezing into a tight space without the necessities to keep you comfortable.

What people love about luxury coach / bus tours in usa.

Great tour guide, Michael M. Great hotels. Wish we had more time on the beach, for swim and that we would stop for photo op. Too bad for Maui fires, we would have loved to go to the other side of island- the stay in Kauea was hurried and rush/rush.
It was great. Tough schedule but I liked it.

I compared a $180 luxury bus to a $46 coach bus, and the expensive option was almost better than flying first-class

  • I rode on a $180 luxury bus and a $46 standard coach bus from New York City to Washington, DC.
  • The regular bus got me from point A to point B, but there weren't many amenities.
  • I was super impressed by the comfortable seats and the attendants on board The Jet.

As somebody who frequently travels between New York City and Washington, DC , I'm thankful for the many transportation options available.

Traditionally, planes are time savers, trains are the most comfortable , and buses are the most cost-effective. But there's another luxury option: The Jet.

As a true travel nerd, I had to see just how different this $180 bus service was from a traditional $46 FlixBus coach offering. Eleven hours of travel later and a notebook full of pros and cons, here's how the buses stacked up.

<p>Both buses had a similar seat configuration, with two seats on either side of the aisle.</p><p>But on the FlixBus, there were a lot more seats, leaving less room in between each row. </p>

The coach bus was almost exactly as I expected it to be.

On the FlixBus, there were two seats on either side of the aisle. But there were a lot more seats, leaving less room in between each row.

<p>Even though there were still four seats per row with an aisle in the middle, The Jet had significantly fewer seats.</p><p>Everything was spread out, giving every rider a lot of space. </p>

There was really no comparison when it came to comfort and space.

The Jet had three seats in each row with an aisle in the middle, but overall, it had significantly fewer seats than the standard coach.

Everything was spread out, giving every rider a lot more space.

<p>The seats on the standard coach bus were moderately sized.</p><p>They provided footrests and enough room to fit a backpack <a href="https://www.insider.com/jetblue-mint-business-class-first-class-dress-code-clothes-2023-7">under the seat in front of you</a>. </p>

I had just enough room for my things on the regular coach bus.

The seats on the standard coach bus were moderately sized.

They provided footrests and enough room to fit a backpack under the seat in front of you .

<p>The Jet provided a 45-degree seat recliner and pop-up leg rest. I had enough room to extend my legs without even being close to the chair in front of me, putting some <a href="https://www.insider.com/first-time-flying-first-class-emirates-review-photos-2022-2">first-class airline seats</a> to shame. </p><p>On top of the comfortable cushioning and lumbar support, the seat itself was designed with technology to help mask any uneasiness on the road. Subtle up-and-down motions gave the illusion of an incredibly smooth ride.</p><p>I wish airplane seats would adopt this feature to reduce the movement of unwanted turbulence.</p>

I couldn't believe how great the seats were on The Jet.

The Jet provided a 45-degree seat recliner and pop-up leg rest. I had enough room to extend my legs without even being close to the chair in front of me, putting some first-class airline seats to shame.

On top of the comfortable cushioning and lumbar support, the seat was designed with technology to help mask any uneasiness on the road. Subtle up-and-down motions gave the illusion of an incredibly smooth ride.

I wish airplane seats would adopt this feature to reduce the movement of unwanted turbulence.

<p>The coach bus provided straightforward service, getting you from point A to B.</p><p>Although there weren't many onboard amenities, there were at least convenient trash bags hanging on every aisle seat.</p>

The coach bus didn't have many amenities.

The coach bus provided straightforward service, getting you from point A to point B.

Although there weren't many amenities on board, there were at least convenient trash bags hanging on the aisle seats.

<p><a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-show-differences-between-flying-economy-business-class-2023-5">My favorite perk</a> was probably the onboard attendants.</p><p>They passed out hot towels at the beginning of the ride, served drinks, and cleaned up after us. One attendant even brought around Jet blankets to make my journey more comfortable. </p>

When paying more than $100 for a bus ticket, you hope for a few added perks, and The Jet delivered.

My favorite perk was probably the attendants on board.

They passed out hot towels at the beginning of the ride, served drinks, and cleaned up after us. One attendant even offered Jet blankets to make my journey more comfortable.

<p>I appreciated that there was a small restroom on the FlixBus. </p>

The bathroom on the regular bus wasn't fancy, but it was functional.

I appreciated the small restroom on the FlixBus.

<p>The restroom had a sink, counter space, backlit mirror lights, a full-length mirror, and enough space to change into something cozy for the ride.</p>

The Jet's amenities were exceptional for a bus.

The restroom had a sink, counter space, backlit mirror lights, a full-length mirror, and enough space to change into something cozy for the ride.

<p>Although there wasn't food on the FlixBus, we got a 15-minute rest-stop break where I picked up a bottle of water and a <a href="https://www.insider.com/which-coffee-chain-has-the-best-black-coffee-on-ice">Dunkin' iced coffee</a> to fuel me for the last three hours on the road. </p>

We made a rest stop on the regular bus to stretch our legs and refuel.

Although there wasn't food on the FlixBus, we got a 15-minute rest-stop break, where I picked up a bottle of water and a Dunkin' iced coffee to fuel me for the last three hours on the road.

<p>Each Jet ticket came with two complimentary alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, or seltzer) and a list of food items on sale for as little as $1.</p>

I was offered free drinks and cheap snacks on The Jet.

<p><a href="https://www.insider.com/worked-desk-job-from-disney-world-what-i-learned-2023-7">As a remote worker</a> who enjoys traveling, a mode of transportation with full internet access is essential. </p><p>Both buses were supposed to provide Wi-Fi, but FlixBus' service was down during my ride. Thankfully, the power plugs on board worked, and I was able to get my phone's hot spot to cooperate. </p>

Although both services promised WiFi, only one worked for me.

As a remote worker who enjoys traveling, it's essential that my mode of transportation has internet access.

The buses were supposed to provide WiFi, but FlixBus' service was down during my ride. Thankfully, the power plugs on board worked, and I used my phone's hot spot instead.

<p>The Jet's Wi-Fi worked, and the service speed was fast enough for my fiancé to stream movies while I uploaded and downloaded significant file-size assets to my computer. </p>

I was able to comfortably get some work done on The Jet.

The Jet's WiFi worked, and the service speed was fast enough for my fiancé to stream movies while I uploaded and downloaded significant file-size assets to my computer.

<p>When comparing <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-luxury-bus-ride-napaway-dc-to-nashville-2023-4">two bus services</a>, traffic is the great equalizer. Even though both departed right on time (A+ for punctuality), the 4 1/2-hour trip took over 5 1/2 hours in each direction.</p><p>If time is your biggest concern, I'd stick with a train or plane. But if you're a remote worker traveling during the day like me, The Jet may actually be the best option.</p><p>I think it was <a href="https://www.insider.com/luxury-private-suite-on-overnight-bus-napaway-review-photos-2023-3">definitely worth the price tag</a>. The fantastic service, luxurious seats, and strong internet connection made it the clear travel winner.</p>

Trains and planes are still probably the better option for most, but I'll splurge on The Jet if I'm riding the bus.

When comparing the bus services , traffic is the great equalizer. Even though the buses departed on time, the 4 ½-hour trip took more than 5 ½ hours in each direction.

If time is your biggest concern, I'd stick with a train or plane. But if you're a remote worker traveling during the day like me, The Jet may be the best option.

I think it was definitely worth the price tag . The fantastic service, luxurious seats, and strong internet connection made it the clear travel winner.

Correction: August 7, 2023 — An earlier version of this story misstated the number of seats in each row on the Jet bus. There are three, not four.

Goodbye Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Hello, Luxury Bus?

Start-up travel companies are hoping more Americans will embrace the concept of sleeper and luxury coaches. Just don’t call them buses.

The black and light brown interior of a bus with seats that have been reconfigured for sleeping passengers. A man wearing a black baseball cap and sunglasses is lying down; a woman in a blue T-shirt is sitting, head down, looking at a lit-up device.

By Maria Cramer

John Rosenberg found a last-minute flight for $200 last month from Washington, D.C., to Nashville to see Pearl Jam. But flights home were $600 and there was no easy way to take the train.

Mr. Rosenberg started searching for buses online. He stumbled on Napaway , a company that promised premium overnight accommodations on an 18-passenger bus with seats that fold into a flat bed and come with a pillow and plush blanket.

The week before, Mr. Rosenberg and his friends had spent 18 hours at Midway Airport in Chicago after they were bounced off their connecting flight to Washington. He spent the night cold and slept a total of 45 minutes in the airport chapel before security kicked him out.

The Napaway, Mr. Rosenberg reasoned, could not be worse. And at least he would be traveling, not waiting.

He booked the flight to Nashville and a ticket home on the Napaway for $125.

“My friends were all making fun of me,” Mr. Rosenberg, 47, said. “You’re going to spend 11 hours on a luxury bus?”

On a Sunday night, after spending the weekend in Nashville, Mr. Rosenberg joined five other passengers, including me, on the Napaway, which in June began taking travelers back and forth from Washington to Nashville.

The company, and other premium bus companies like it, are betting that Americans will abandon the image of the rumbling, cramped bus as the transport of last resort for the cash-strapped and embrace long-haul coach travel.

Giant sleeper buses have been a staple of travel in parts of Latin America and Asia for decades. But in the United States, the concept has never taken hold, despite our vast highway system. Around 2017, Cabin, a two-story bus with beds tucked into private pods , began taking passengers from Los Angeles to San Francisco for overnight trips, but stopped in 2020. Gaetano Crupi, the founder of Cabin, declined to comment on why the service ended.

More successful have been high-end coach services that offer shorter journeys, like Red Coach , Vonlane and the Jet , a 14-seat bus that ferries people from Metro Center in Washington to Hudson Yards in Manhattan.

They advertise seats that recline far back, high-speed Wi-Fi and a feeling that even though you’re technically on an intercity bus, you are on a refined, affordably priced journey, said Andisheh Ranjbari, an assistant professor of travel behavior at Penn State.

“You don’t see the word bus anywhere in the advertisements,” she said. “They say it’s a first-class luxury experience.”

Napaway is the only “fully flat” sleeper bus in the country, said Dan Aronov, the company’s founder and chief executive. He is aware that many travelers may be skeptical of taking a 10- to 11-hour bus ride when a flight from Washington to Nashville takes less than two hours.

He responds by pointing out how miserable the airport experience can be. Flying is faster, but a passenger will still spend several hours getting to the airport, going through security and then waiting at the gate. And that is assuming a flight is not delayed, Mr. Aronov said.

Contrast that experience with traveling while lying on a memory foam mattress pad and snuggling under a blanket, he said.

“You were going to spend seven to eight hours asleep,” Mr. Aronov said. “Now you’re just doing it in motion.”

‘A private jet experience’

Ironically, it was companies like Megabus and BoltBus, which offered $1 rides and curbside pickup in the early part of the 2000s, that paved the way for premium coach travel, said Joseph Schwieterman, professor of public service at DePaul University in Chicago and director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, which studies intercity bus travel.

Those companies renewed interest in intercity bus travel and spurred more innovation and investment, he said.

Now, as train service remains elusive in much of the South and air travel continues to frustrate travelers, it is possible the “stars have aligned” for premium coach travel, Professor Schwieterman said.

Premium coach lines have significantly fewer overhead costs than rail and especially airlines, which have much higher fuel costs and need a “small army” of employees to operate, he said.

By contrast, a premium bus requires a crew of one to two drivers and perhaps one attendant, which means that even if a company sells fewer than half of its seats on a trip, it can still cover its costs, so long as it does not lower fares to compete with conventional bus lines, Professor Schwieterman said.

Mia Reed, a singer from Brooklyn who found trains too costly and airplanes inconvenient, said she was eager to find a luxury bus that would take her to visit her parents in Fredericksburg, Va., after having “nightmare” experiences on other bus rides.

Ms. Reed, 29, said she learned about the Jet on Instagram and TikTok, where videos showed wide seats, powered by “motion-canceling technology.”

Booking online was easy, and the Jet was “beautiful” and “a little bit better organized” than an ordinary bus, Ms. Reed said. An attendant came by frequently during the four-hour trip to check on passengers and pass out snacks, coffee, wine and soda.

“It’s meant to feel like a private jet experience,” said Chad Scarborough, the company’s founder and chief executive. “Hence the name the Jet.”

Still, buses have a tricky place in the American imagination. Weird Al Yankovic warned us of them in “Another One Rides the Bus,” his parody of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” In movies, more often than not, they are used as settings to show the protagonists at their most annoyed , imperiled or dead . When I told relatives that I would be riding an overnight bus to Nashville, one of them suggested I carry a pocketknife.

I arrived in Washington on Friday to catch the Napaway with my friend Theresa.

We found the bus at 9:30 p.m. at the designated meeting spot — a well-lit parking lot on L Street NE near the Wunder Garten, an outdoor beer garden where Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the U.S.A.” blared from the speakers and the sound of laughter wafted over the fence.

We were joined by three other passengers: Ammie Conner, an 80-year-old retiree who was visiting her grandson in Nashville; Guillerma Saltano, a shy, 50-year-old woman from the Dominican Republic; and Catherine Lee, a 50-year-old graduate student studying social work.

We gawked at the bus, an enormous black coach with a galaxy of stars painted on the side. Inside, there were 36 seats, two for each passenger, that convert into flat, sort of S-shaped beds.

Ms. Conner, who sky-dived for the first time at 70 and went zip lining at 80, said she booked the bus “for the novelty of it.”

She said when she told a friend about the bus, the friend replied, “‘What a great idea for a bachelorette party.’” But rowdy partygoers run counter to the ethos of the Napaway, which asks passengers to refrain from loud talking or playing their devices out loud.

No one under 8 can ride the Napaway, said Mr. Aronov. The Jet, which charges fares starting at $99 for a one-way ticket, has an age minimum of 6.

“I’m very sympathetic to parents,” Mr. Aronov said. “But right now, for the comfort of the other passengers, we have an age minimum.”

Mr. Aronov, 29, said he chose Nashville because it’s a busy urban hub popular with tourists in an area of the country with few public transit options.

Mr. Aronov, an Oxford University graduate who worked at Barclays Investment Bank and Loews Corp., said he started Napaway with the help of “individual” investors, not large institutions. He declined to say how much it cost to start Napaway but said the company is not breaking even yet.

“It’s a new concept and it takes time for the word to get out,” Mr. Aronov said.

He is hoping to add more routes — passengers have requested trips from Washington to Atlanta, New York and Boston. The bus has added stops in Knoxville on the Washington-Nashville route and in November will add Wednesday and Thursday to the weekly schedule.

Travelers have ranged in ages from 9 to 93, Mr. Aronov said.

Mr. Aronov joined us on my trip — he said he tries to ride the Napaway as much as possible. As the bus pulled away, he described how to lower the seats and pull down the black privacy screen. Each passenger received a sleep mask, toothpaste and a small toothbrush, ear plugs, and a disposable towelette.

Ms. Saltano struggled with her privacy screen and Mr. Aronov rushed to help her. She burrowed under her blanket, looked at her phone for a few minutes, then quickly fell asleep.

I lowered my seats, laid the mattress down, curled into the fetal position and drifted off to sleep, wondering if someone over 6 feet tall would be as comfortable. (Mr. Aronov said the beds are long enough that anyone up to 6 foot 4 inches tall should be able to lie flat without having to curl up their knees.)

I woke up briefly at 2 a.m. If anyone was snoring, I could not hear it over the soft whirring of the engine and the rumbling wheels. The bus jostled, but the rocking motion was lulling. As I drifted back to sleep, I imagined this was how a baby nestled in a carriage feels.

I awoke at 7, surprised by how refreshed I felt.

The bus dropped us off in downtown Nashville, where my friend and I spent about 36 hours — plenty of time to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and RCA Studio B , catch live music at Rudy’s Jazz Room , and overeat at Biscuit Love , Peg Leg Porker and Monell’s .

I met Mr. Rosenberg, the Pearl Jam fan, on the ride back to Washington, where we were joined by Ms. Conner, Ms. Lee and Mr. Aronov.

The trip home was as peaceful as the trip down. An accident on Interstate 81 created a five-mile backup around 5 a.m., delaying our arrival by about an hour.

No one seemed annoyed.

“I would go anywhere on this bus,” Ms. Conner said, as she stretched and rose from her seat.

Mr. Rosenberg said he slept well — about four hours, a typical night’s sleep for him.

“This was fantastic,” he told Mr. Aronov as he stepped off the bus and shook his hand. “Most comfortable I’ve ever been on a bus.”

I asked Mr. Rosenberg if he would ride the Napaway again.

Yes, he said, but only if a one-way plane ticket cost more than $300.

Tickets on the Napaway start at $125 each way. The Napaway travels from Washington to Nashville, with stops in Knoxville. It currently leaves only on Friday (with plans to add Wednesday and Thursday) at 10 p.m. from 180 L St NE in Washington and arrives in Nashville at 8 a.m. Central time the following day. The bus will drop you off at 421 Rep. John Lewis Way N, about half a mile from Broadway.

The Napaway leaves Nashville on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and, barring unforeseen traffic, returns to Washington the following day at 7:30 a.m. If you have time before meeting the bus and feel like spending $15 to $18 on a cocktail, stop for a drink at Skull’s Rainbow Room , a bar and restaurant with friendly, skilled bartenders that is a 7-minute walk from Napaway’s meeting spot.

There are no snacks on the Napaway, though every passenger gets a bottle of water. The bus has free Wi-Fi fast enough to stream Netflix or Hulu on your own device. Napaway offers a free online library of movies like “The Joker” and “Ratatouille.”

There is a bathroom on board, but it is tiny, so wear clothes you are comfortable sleeping in or use your privacy screen to get changed at your own seat. The bus stops twice briefly, once for pickup and drop-off in Knoxville and for roadside rest stops. The hope, said Mr. Aronov, is you won’t notice because “you’ll be fast asleep.”

Can I change my travel plans?

There is no fee to modify a reservation but you may be subject to a fare difference if modified to a date less than seven days from your date of modification. Please note, trips modified inside 2 hours of a departure can only be modified once and are no longer eligible for future travel credits or modifications. You can login to your account at vonlane.com to modify trips departing greater than two hours in the future or call, chat online, or email your modification request to [email protected] . If you simply cancel your existing trip and purchase a new trip, your credit card will be charged for a second booking. Your cancellation will be governed by our normal cancellation policy which may result in a loss of fare or an issuance of Vonlane credit only.

Can I receive a refund?

Yes, all Vonlane tickets are fully refundable as long as you cancel 24 hours prior to the first leg of your trip. Tickets cancelled inside of 24 hours and prior to 2 hours before the departure time are re-usable for future travel at a value equal to the original fare paid. Vonlane credit for cancelled trips expires and is removed from a passenger's account six months after the cancellation date. There is no refundable or re-usable value for a "no show" ticket. Tickets cancelled less than 2 hours prior to the trip departure time are non-cancellable and nonrefundable. Trips booked within 24 hours of departure are not refundable to the purchaser's credit card.

Are there other fees?

When traveling with Vonlane, the only additional fee you may incur is if you choose to park your personal vehicle. Our terminal locations offer parking fees that are competitive with typical airport parking fees; therefore, you can still plan to pay less overall for your entire trip.

Are there baggage restrictions?

In order to ensure all passengers are accommodated, please limit your luggage to 2 bags of 50 pounds or less and 1 carry-on bag.

Is there a restroom?

Yes, every Vonlane Passenger First motor coach has a full restroom for your convenience. Unlike the airlines, you won't be sharing it with more than 100 people. Our coaches only hold 22 passengers.

Can pets travel?

Small dogs, weighing less than 10 pounds , in a carry-case that can fit by a passenger's legs, are allowed on a Vonlane coach. The carry-case must be fully enclosed and the dog fully secured in the case. The case is not permitted on any table, seat, or in the coach aisle. The case, with dog inside, must remain quietly on the floor by the passenger’s feet throughout the trip. The carry-case must not impede the personal space of any other passenger, their seat, or leg rest. Dogs that cannot remain quietly in the carry-case should not be brought aboard and passengers with loud animals may be asked to disembark the coach at a rest area. This is strictly enforced by our attendants. Cats and other animals are not allowed aboard the motor coaches.

Service animals that are "trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability" are allowed aboard without being in an animal carrier. All service animals must be harnessed and controlled by the passenger at all times. Vonlane adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA does not cover emotional support dogs. Therefore, emotional support dogs that cannot adhere to the pet policy above cannot travel aboard Vonlane. Hamptons Streamliner

“The Hamptons is a market that can use a middle ground,” Blade’s chief marketing officer Roisin Branch said in a statement. “Until electric vertical aircraft are available, we can’t make helicopters less expensive, but we can elevate the ground experience that hasn’t changed in over two decades.”

Each seat is fitted with a call button that will get the attention of an attendant should you want a hot towel, cashmere blanket, or free snack. Passengers will be offered tasty treats to enjoy on the journey, such as Château La Coste rosé, Patron’s new El Alto tequila , PopUp Bagels, and Sweetgreen salads. You’ll also receive Hamptons Survival Dopp kits by Dria and dog accessories by Bonefly if you decide to bring Fido.

That level of service comes at a cost, of course. The Streamliner starts at $195 per seat, whereas the Jitney and Ambassador begin at $41 and $64, respectively. You can also fork out $275 for one of the Streamliner’s seven premium single seats, which is still cheaper than paying $1,000 to get the Blade Bell 407 helicopter to the East End.

Hamptons Streamliner

The new service will run from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. That’s your summer commuting sorted, then.

Blade launches luxury shuttle bus to the Hamptons for summer – but a single seat could set you back $275

The  US  helicopter charter company Blade is wheeling out a luxury bus service from New York City to the Hamptons this May – and tickets aren’t cheap.

Initially founded 10 years ago as a way to swerve heavy vehicle traffic when commuting out of NYC, Blade’s helicopter seats currently shuttle Hampton-goers to eastern Long Island from $1,050 (£837) for a 40-minute flight.

Now, to find the middle ground between high-end flying and the budget Hampton Jitney bus, the helicopter operator is “elevating” the ground travel experience.

The new first-class transport option is a partnership between Blade and Jet – a high-end coach service that runs from New York to Washington DC.

Revamped 19-seat Jet coaches will feature a ‘Passenger Experience Team Member’ call button, wifi, hot towels and cashmere blankets for a “premium” bus ride.

Espresso martinis from a stocked bar, Sweetgreen salads and PopUp bagels are on the menu alongside seats that recline 45 degrees with plenty of legroom for the 95-mile journey to the beach.

Tickets start from $195 each way for double-row seats, and the seven single left side seats will set you back $275. Pets can also ride with their owners and receive the celebrity treatment for an additional charge.

New Yorkers will board the bus from business and shopping district Hudson Yards in Manhattan for the two-hour hop to stops in the Hamptons, including Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton.

The return route will drop passengers at an East Side location before the Streamliner’s final stop back at Hudson Yards.

Affordable bus tickets with Jitney – a Hamptons shuttle of 50 years – for multi-stop journeys start from $41, and although Blade’s buses won’t be immune to the Long Island Expressway traffic, they say the travel will be more similar to the private jet experience.

The helicopter operator hopes Hamptons-bound NYC weekenders, specifically young people, will opt out of travelling in chauffeured cars or helicopter rides in favour of the new service.

Roisin Branch, Blade’s CMO, told  The Post :  “We’re excited about the ‘white space’ that exists between a $40 Jitney ride and a $1,000 helicopter flight.

“Until electric vertical aircraft are available, we can’t make helicopter travel less expensive. But what we can do is elevate the ground travel experience, which has not changed in over a century.”

The two Hamptons Streamliners debut on Friday with services running from Memorial Day weekend (25 May) until the end of the summer season, Labor Day .

The train takes you here from Moscow (from Kazanskaya train station) in approximately 16 hours or from Volgograd in about 20 hours. Ulyanovsk Main Station is located 6 km from the city center.

Get around [ edit ]

Ulyanovsk has an extensive public transportation network that includes buses, trolleys, and trams. It is very affordable, but congested and may be quite confusing. You won't find any route maps or schedules, neither at bus stops nor in buses. Fee collectors usually don't speak English. Express buses and semi-private van routes are more comfortable and more expensive. Taxis are not expensive, and that's your best bet if you want to get somewhere (relatively) quickly, in (relative) comfort (almost all cars are old Russian ladas or over 10 year old non-Russian cars), and without much hassle. They are also most likely to have English speaking drivers (one in 1000) and superloud Russian pop music.

Getting between the banks of the Volga is a problem. There is a two lane bridge connecting the banks and it's nearly always congested, so if you're unlucky, it can take a couple of hours. Most locals avoid going over the bridge if they can. A four-lane bridge was planned to relieve these problems.
