Peru: Journey to a Lost World map

Countries Visited

Day 1: lima.

Arrive at Lima International Airport, where you will be met in the arrivals hall and privately transferred to your hotel.

Check in to the Belmond Miraflores Park for a two-night stay in an ocean view Junior Suite. Enjoy the rest of the day and evening at your leisure.

Special IRT Virtuoso amenity at this hotel: 40-minute massage (1 per person, per stay)

Day 2: Lima

After your included breakfast, set out for a Lima city tour. Begin with a visit to the Plaza Mayor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then visit the cathedral, with its splendid carved stalls and silver-covered altars surrounded by fine woodwork. Next, visit the Government Palace, the City Hall and the Archbishop’s Palace.

Continue to one of our favorite stops: the fascinating Larco Herrera Museum, located in a unique 18th-century mansion. Inside you’ll see the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection.

Enjoy lunch at the Larco Museum’s Café del Museo restaurant, offering a variety of dishes, homemade and light. The restaurant provides a privileged view of the beautiful surrounding gardens and of the mansion, which was built on a Pre-Colombian pyramid from the 7th century.

Note: in 2024, the Larco Museum visit will be replaced by a private tour of the Museum of Art in Lima led by the museum curator. Gain exclusive access to the conservation workshop and watch the skilled restorers in action.

After lunch return to your hotel and enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. This evening, enjoy an a la carte dinner at the fabulous Restaurant Tragaluz in your hotel.

Day 3: Lima – Cusco – Sacred Valley

After an early breakfast this morning, transfer to Lima Airport for your scheduled flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the Sacred Valley. Enjoy the stunning landscape as you make your way to the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Visit Awanakancha Center, where weavers of more than 12 communities of southern Peru exhibit the spinning, dyeing and weaving of Andean traditional textiles, helping to preserve the traditional weaving patterns. Here you will find the finest of the traditional and industrial Andean textiles in South America.

Continue to the town of Pisac, renowned for its colorful market where the local Indians meet to sell their merchandise as they have done for centuries. The handicraft market is open every day and is famous for its ceramic beads made into necklaces, earrings and other Peruvian artifacts. A box lunch will be provided.

Arrive at the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado and check in for a two-night stay in a Deluxe Terrace Room. The rest of the day is at your leisure to rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude, to stroll the beautiful grounds or enjoy the jacuzzi or the pool.

This evening, enjoy dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, El Huerto, with its warm glow of candlelight and refined, sophisticated atmosphere.

Day 4: Sacred Valley

After your included breakfast, depart this morning for an excursion to Chinchero, a small Andean Indian village located high up on the windswept plains of Anta at 12,340 feet above sea level, about 18 miles from Cusco. There are beautiful views overlooking the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay dominating the western horizon.

Chinchero is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. The village is mainly composed of mud brick (adobe) houses, and locals still go about their business in traditional dress.

Enjoy a delicious lunch in the charming Hacienda Huayoccari, with its vast collection of colonial and folk art. The Hacienda is located on the summit of a hill sheltered amidst Andean peaks, offering one of the finest views of the Valley and a lovely garden.

In the afternoon visit the town of Ollantaytambo, the site of one of the great Inca fortresses and sacred areas in the Urubamba Valley. The town is one of the oldest continuously occupied settlements in the Americas.

The 16 massive terraces are a testimony to the magnificent Inca masonry. Climb to the steep 16 massive terrace stone steps up to the imposing fortress at the top of the mountain – around 260 steps! (Walking sticks recommended.)

From here the view down the valley is superb, and you can admire the huge monoliths that form the Temple of the Sun.

This evening enjoy dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, El Huerto.

Day 5: Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu

After your included breakfast, transfer to Ollantaytambo train station to meet the fabulous Belmond Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu.*

The Belmond Hiram Bingham is the most luxurious way to travel to Machu Picchu – a magical journey never to be forgotten. As passengers step on board they are encompassed in a world of polished wood, gleaming cutlery and glittering glass — and stellar service.

The train consists of two dining cars, an observation bar car, and a kitchen car, and can take up to 84 passengers. En route to Machu Picchu, a brunch will be served as you watch the stunning landscape unfold.

Upon arrival, take a short bus trip up to Machu Picchu, and check in to the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located right at the ruins, for a one-night stay.

Your stay includes buffet breakfast, a la carte lunch and dinner, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (premium alcoholic brands and special wines excluded) and a full mini-bar.

Visit this unique Inca citadel and its surrounding complexes on a guided visit. Machu Picchu stands 7,970 feet above sea-level in the middle of a tropical mountain forest—an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height.

Its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally into the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna. Entrance to the citadel is included.

Later, enjoy afternoon tea at the hotel. Dinner also included at the hotel this evening. Overnight at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge.

Special IRT Virtuoso amenity at this hotel : 40-minute massage (1 per person, per stay)

*Note the Belmond Hiram Bingham will be replaced with the first-class Vistadome service on certain departures through July 2022.

Day 6: Machu Picchu – Cusco

This morning, we highly recommend rising early to take a walk through Machu Picchu at sunrise. Many travelers consider this to be the highlight of a visit to Machu Picchu.

This morning you will have the opportunity to take one of two hikes with your guide. The first option is to the Inti Punku, or famous Sun Gate, which is the entry point to Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail. This two-hour visit offers excellent views of the ruins.

The second hike, about 2.5 hours long, is a climb up the Huayna Picchu, the area’s highest mountain and actually part of the ruins. From this vantage point you are afforded excellent views of the surrounding area, as well as a unique view of the famous ‘lost city’. Please note: this hike is extremely challenging and steep!

In the late afternoon, board the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will board the Belmond Hiram Bingham to Cusco.

The train departs early evening. An elegant dinner will be served on board (including soft drinks, Peruvian wine and Pisco sours), followed by evening entertainment. Arrive into Poroy Station approximately 9 p.m. On arrival, transfer to the Belmond Hotel Monasterio, where you will check in for a two-night stay.

Day 7: Cusco

After breakfast, enjoy a half-day tour of Cusco, which includes a visit to the cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Santo Domingo Temple & Koricancha, a Dominican Church and convent built on the foundations of the Koricancha, the Inca’s principal religious building dedicated to the worship of the sun.

Your tour also includes a visit to the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman; Kenko, the amphitheater and religious center; Tambomachay, the Inca Baths and center of worship to the water god; and finally Puca-Pucara, the red fortress built to protect Tambomachay.

Enjoy an a-la carte lunch at Limo Restaurant. Limo is a must for connoisseurs and lovers of Peruvian high cuisine and environments that combine tradition and contemporary design. We highly recommend it!

The afternoon is at your leisure in Cusco.

This evening, dinner is included at El Tupay, the restaurant at Hotel Monasterio. Enjoy classic international cuisine featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients in a warm and intimate setting. It’s a magical evening to close out your time in Cusco.

Day 8: Cusco – Puno

This morning you will be transferred to Wanchaq train station, where you will board the beautiful Belmond Andean Explorer luxury train. Settle in to your private cabin, your home for the next two nights. All meals are included on board.

Marvel at the breathtaking scenery as the train travels from Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, traversing the highest plains of the Andes, to the reflective beauty of Lake Titicaca. En route, visit the temple of Raqch’i, an archaeological site known for its impressive Inca ruins.

Enjoy dusk at La Raya, followed by dinner on board the train.

Day 9: Puno

After breakfast on the train, depart for a full-day tour on Lake Titicaca where you will explore two of the lake’s famous islands.

First, head out across Lake Titicaca toward Uros, a group of man-made floating islands constructed entirely out of reeds. The friendly Uru people are happy to welcome you to their islands, and will share with you their history, culture and traditions.

Then, travel on to Taquile, an island untouched by the mainland’s modernity. The local inhabitants, known as Taquileños, still wear traditional clothing and are known for their high-quality handicrafts. While the women make yarn and weave, knitting is actually done exclusively by men.

After, return to the train for a delicious dinner and a good night’s rest in your private cabin.

Day 10: Puno – Arequipa

Depart Puno aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer . Disembark this morning for a tour to the Sumbay Caves. These caves feature more than 500 paintings and engravings of local wildlife, including herds of guanaco, a relative of the llama that still lives in Peru’s high sierra. Afterwards, the train continues to Arequipa.

Upon arrival in Arequipa train station, you will be met and transferred to the Casa Andina Premium Hotel, where you will check in for a one-night stay.

This evening is at your leisure.

Day 11: Arequipa

After breakfast this morning, tour Peru’s White City, so called because of the white volcanic rock, sillar, used in its buildings. Visit the Plaza de Armas, the former cloisters of the Jesuit orders and the picturesque suburbs of Yanahuara and Chilina, with magnificent views of the Misti Volcano. Continue to the Santa Catalina Convent, constructed to shelter the daughters of the wealthiest families of the city with a religious vocation.

Lunch is included in a local restaurant. Later this afternoon, you will be transferred to the Arequipa Airport for your flight to Lima.

On arrival in Lima you will be met and escorted to the Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel where you can rest until it is time to return to the airport for your international flight.

Travelling around Peru by train feels totally indulgent. It’s hard to believe that these luxury trains are operating across some of the most remote areas in Peru, taking guests from one incredible highlight to another. For me, after a hard day of sightseeing at Machu Picchu, enjoying an evening meal and glass of wine on the Hiram Bingham, heading back to Cusco is the perfect ending to an epic adventure at the incredible ancient ruins.

When to visit

Luxury Train journeys in Peru run all year round. However, many of Peru’s highlights are best visited during the dry winter season, which runs from May to October. February is Peru’s rainy month so it’s best to avoid this if you hope to do a lot of outdoor activities in between your rail journeys.

Perfect for Adventure Seekers: The Ferrocarril Central Andino to Huancayo, Central Highlands

Lima – Huancayo (this route is currently suspended, yet given its magnificence, we’ve included it ready for when the service resumes!)

If you’re looking for a pass less trodden for your private vacation to Peru, then look no further than the Ferrocarril Central Andino – the second highest railway line in the world. Its track takes travelers from Lima to the city of Huancayo on a 12-hour route that runs through the heart of the Andes.

A trip aboard the Ferrocarril Central Andino requires some planning since its schedule runs around just five times per year between April and October. The railway is an impressive engineering feat, constructed between 1870 and 1908 and featuring 58 bridges, 69 tunnels, and 6 switchbacks.

Beginning in Lima, the train climbs 4,631m (15,193ft) in just 158km (98mi) at the highest pass in Galera at 4,781m (15,685ft) from which it descends until Huancayo at 3,261m (10,698ft). Along the way, the train stops at some incredibly rural towns, offering guests an authentic insight into Andean culture away from the tourist trail. The region itself is known for its fertile land and traditional handicrafts – and accompanied by a specialist Aracari guide, you’ll gain insider knowledge into what sets this area apart from others in Peru.

Perfect for those seeking adventure during a private vacation to Peru, the train will terminate in Huancayo – a city nestled high in the central Andes. Visiting here as part of a luxury vacation to Peru with Aracari means that you’ll then be collected via private vehicle, and accompanied by your guide – you’ll then navigate a fascinating route in style and comfort, taking in unique and rarely visited sights such as the Santa Rosa De Ocopa convent.

Perfect for Traveling as a Group: The Hiram Bingham Royal Charter to Machu Picchu

The Hiram Bingham Royal Charter is a train ride through Peru quite unlike any other. Ideal for those traveling to Peru as a group of friends, this premium service offers a private party of up to twelve guests a chance to glide through the Peruvian Andes in sumptuous 1920s glamour.

The carriage can be anchored to the regular Hiram Bingham train schedule or can be arranged as a separate service whereby the private suite is attached to its own locomotive and adjoining kitchen carriage. For either option, you’ll first be welcomed with a Pachamama ceremony and traditional Andean dance performance on the platform, before heading on board for your journey towards the cloud forest and a private guided tour of Machu Picchu.

Featuring its own bar, the Hiram Bingham Royal Charter is attended to by a dedicated butler who will serve unlimited drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) throughout the journey. For lunch, a gourmet menu showcasing native Andean ingredients will be served in a fine-dining setting, as the carriage passes through some of the most spectacular landscapes in all of Peru. And once your party reaches the final stop, a luxury private transfer waiting will be waiting to take you from the station and up to the ancient ruins.

Perfect for Traveling as a Family with Children: Peru Rail Vistadome Observatory to Machu Picchu

Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu

For those traveling to Peru with children, a ride on the Vistadome Observatory is an unmissable experience. Its route is mapped between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu, yet this is so much more than an A to B train service. Aboard, travelers can expect an electric atmosphere, one that aims to immerse guests in both the Andean countryside and its culture.

The panoramic windows found throughout the train’s carriages, and within its unique 360-degree Observatory Car – provide unobstructed views of the passing Sacred Valley and the flowing river below which carves its way through the landscape.

But what makes this luxury Peru train especially unique – and the ideal option for a luxury family vacation to Peru – is the live performances that take place both on the platform and whilst the train is in motion. Dancers in traditional dress, with masks representing animal figures, will perform the Saqra; a traditional dance native to the highlands of Cusco. The impressive show will be set to typical music from the Andes as the train crosses the ancient land on the once-in-a-lifetime journey to Machu Picchu.

5 Of The Most Luxurious Trains Around The World

I n the past, trains were the fastest way to travel on land , especially long distances. But when automobiles and airplanes came about, boarding a train to travel to the other end of the country became impractical. After all, you'll be on the rails for multiple days, and living in a cramped space for such a duration doesn't sound very appealing. However, amidst the rise in the popularity of air travel, people eventually found their way back to the railways — this time, for leisure purposes.

Modern luxury trains are designed not for transportation but for tourism. They offer travelers an unhurried way of touring the region while enjoying the scenic route. These luxury trains are often comparable to upscale hotels as they come complete with dining areas, lounges, and accommodations. Today, luxury trains can be found in many parts of the world. Here are five luxurious trains you can check out for your next trip.

Royal Canadian Pacific, Canada

The Royal Canadian Pacific is a vintage luxury train with a long and storied history. Its carriages date back to 1916, during which they served as convenient transportation linking Canada's east and west coasts. The train, consisting of 10 1920s business cars and two old locomotives , carried numerous public figures since its inception, including King George VI, Princess Elizabeth, U.S. Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. However, in 2000, several decades later, the carriages were converted into the luxury tour train it is today.

Speaking of tours, there are three excursions available for booking. The Royal Canadian Rockies Experience lasts five days and four nights, taking passengers from Alberta to British Columbia before returning to Alberta. A slightly shorter option is the Royal Pacific Express, a four-day, three-night journey beginning in Alberta and ending in Vancouver. The Royal Prairie Express excursion takes just as long but follows the reverse route (Vancouver to Alberta).

Design-wise, the Royal Canadian Pacific features Russian-imported furniture and fittings that give the interiors an elegant vintage look. However, the amenities are tailored to provide passengers with a modern and comfortable onboard experience. There's a fine dining car, a rear-end observation car with a small open-air deck, and lounge areas in every sleeper car. While boasting a classic style, the accommodations are fitted with conveniences, such as an in-room safe, private bathroom with shower, wardrobe, and internal telephone that you can use for calling room service.

Andean Explorer, Peru

Operated by hospitality and leisure company Belmond, the Andean Explorer holds the title of South America's first luxury sleeper train. It traverses one of the world's highest railways, connecting the cities of Arequipa, Puno, and Cusco in rural Peru. This train is designed with a focus on contemporary luxury and comes complete with 16 carriages. There's a lounge car providing cocktails and piano music, an observation bar car featuring an open-air deck connected to an indoor bar, a spa car offering different massages and therapies, and two restaurant cars serving dishes made with local ingredients.

The rest of the carriages are dedicated to the accommodations. You can find 35 cabins on the Andean Explorer, all equipped with amenities like an in-room bathroom with washbasin and shower, air conditioning, wardrobe, 220V power outlets, and 24/7 call buttons. Since the train route runs up the mountain, there are also dedicated oxygen tanks and masks inside each room, plus an onboard medical assistant should you have respiratory troubles during the trip. You can pick from three cabin types on the train: bunk bed, twin bed, or suite. They range from as small as 5.5 square meters to as spacious as 13.1 square meters.

The Andean Explorer departs every Tuesday and Thursday from Cusco, every Wednesday and Sunday from Puno, and every Saturday from Arequipa. It pauses operations for a month every February.

Seven Stars In Kyushu Luxury Sleeper Train, Japan

In operation since 2013, Seven Stars in Kyushu Luxury Sleeper Train takes passengers across the seven prefectures in Japan's southern island of Kyushu. The train's name is a nod not only to these seven prefectures but also to the seven main draws of the island (nature, hot springs, food, trains, humanity, history and culture, and the so-called "power spots").

Seven Stars in Kyushu is also referred to as such because it features only seven carriages that provide passengers with a more intimate and exclusive feel. In the first car, you can find the dining hall with wide windows for enjoying the passing countryside. This space is adorned with a bar and piano. Then, there's the salon room in the second carriage, where you can lounge while pouring yourself a drink. Tucked away in this second carriage is also a small enclosed tea room furnished to look like a Japanese teahouse. Following the salon car is a carriage for the second bar and the gallery shop featuring curated souvenir items from Kyushu, such as handicrafts, jewelry, and various home goods.

The remaining cars contain the train's lodging areas, with Car 7 housing the only two deluxe suites. There are 10 guest cabins onboard, accommodating a maximum of 20 passengers. The rooms are thoughtfully designed with a modern Japanese aesthetic in mind and come complete with standard amenities, including air conditioning, shower, and toilet.

Le Grand Tour, France

Organized by the popular show park Puy du Fou, the French train Le Grand Tour is a massive luxury train tour around some of France's major attractions. It covers roughly 4,000 kilometers and spans six days and five nights. The tour starts in Paris, stops at notable locations like Reims, Annecy, and Avignon, and concludes at Puy du Fou. But apart from the immersive experiences in French arts, cuisine, and craftsmanship, another highlight of the tour is the train itself. The carriages follow a Belle Époque design with shades of blue and red adorning the interior. Amenities onboard include a restaurant serving French dishes prepared by a Michelin-starred chef and a bar offering passengers a hangout spot for taking in the picturesque view.

As for the accommodations, there are three configurations to pick from. You have the 10-square meter cabins for at most two passengers, the 15-square meter cabin suites for one to three passengers, and the 25-square meter adjoining suite (made up of a cabin connected to a suite) to provide more space for two to five travelers. Passengers also have the option to book a single private carriage or the whole train. Whatever your configuration, all the rooms feature an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, modular lounge, wardrobe, Wi-Fi, and a personal steward to tend to your needs. There are only 18 cabins available onboard, housing a total of 36 passengers.

Rovos Rail, Africa

Rovos Rail is one of Africa's most distinguished luxury train services, boasting over three decades of operation. It offers excursions through several countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The excursions vary from as short as 800 kilometers to as long as 5,530 kilometers and take anything between two and 15 nights. Although made up of rebuilt trains, Rovos Rail showcases a vintage and classic aesthetic in its carriages. The interiors feature polished wood paneling and plush furnishings with intricate patterns.

In terms of onboard amenities, the train is complete with sleeper coaches and living spaces. The sleeper coaches are available in three configurations: Pullman, Deluxe, and Royal, with the Royal suite being the largest at sixteen square meters. Each suite has a bathroom, air conditioning, safes, tea facilities, and cupboards. The Royal and Deluxe suites also include a separate lounge area with a bar fridge for added comfort.

The living spaces, on the other hand, come in several carriage types. A 32-seat observation car features an open-air balcony, bar, and panoramic windows. Connected to the observation car is the Club Car area, where passengers can smoke and watch the passing scenery. You can also find a lounge car, which is slightly smaller with only about 26 seats but features a gift shop with unique merchandise and souvenirs. The dining cars are the most spacious on the train, accommodating roughly 42 passengers.

Riding in Style on Japanese Trains

Luxurious rail cars offer countryside views with a range of cultural itineraries and budgets.

A train moves along a track. Its metallic sides are reflecting the landscape, including cherry trees with pink blossoms.

By Vivian Morelli

Reporting from Tokyo

Japan’s public transportation is known for its punctuality, efficiency and high-quality service, which means train travel is a great way to see the countryside and to experience Japanese culture — even if you’re squeezed into Tokyo’s crowded Yamanote line at rush hour or experiencing the popular high-speed Shinkansen bullet train .

But many savvy visitors crisscross the country in another way, using luxury trains that resemble five-star hotels on rails.

Luxury rail travel appeals to “someone who wants slow travel, the experience of excellent service in a contained environment, the finest dining, the most exquisite accommodation with private bathrooms,” Simon Pielow, co-founder of the Luxury Train Club , said by phone from Wiltshire County, England. “Things that many people have no idea is possible on anything other than a royal train.”

One trip chartered by his agency starts and ends at Hakata station in the city of Fukuoka, crossing the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on the Seven Stars , a seven-car luxury sleeper train. Journeys for either two days and one night (per person, double occupancy) range from 650,000 to 900,000 yen (about $4,292 to $5,942), or four days and three nights from ¥1.2 million to ¥1.6 million. (A single supplement would apply.)

“The train is very much sought-after because of the quality of the service on the train and its exclusivity,” Mr. Pielow said. “The people who come to us are desperate to travel on the train.”

With limited space, most would-be travelers need to apply several months in advance.

The Seven Stars, or Nanatsuboshi in Japanese, was named in part after the number of its carriages, in part after the seven prefectures of Kyushu: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima, and for seven of the main attractions of the region, including its nature, food and hot springs. (Other stars have been known to ride these rails: The actress and producer Margot Robbie told Vogue last year that she and her husband had traveled to Japan in part to ride the Seven Stars.)

The train consists of a lounge car, a bar, a tatami-mat tearoom and a souvenir shop, as well as eight 108-square-foot private rooms and two larger suites, the biggest measuring 226 square feet.

Guests don’t necessarily have to spend all their time on board. They can also get off to participate in activities such as a guided walk along the Wakimoto coast, a seaside area of Kagoshima Prefecture, that lasts about an hour.

Meals can be consumed aboard the train or at restaurants along the way, and one night can be spent in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn.

So how does that work on a train? Some stops last an hour or more, enough time for guest excursions. But often, the train will keep rolling and pick up the guests at a later station.

But there also are other luxury trains in Japan. (Seven Stars and the Shiki-Shima, detailed below, can be booked from overseas. The others listed here must be booked from within Japan.)

The Twilight Express Mizukaze is an Art Deco-inspired sleeper train decorated from traditional crafts such as pottery and cut glass. Onboard entertainment includes a tea ceremony, live music and a signature cocktail from the bar. Five routes are offered, including a two-day, one night one-way trip and a three-day, two-night round trip. A suite includes a private balcony and bathroom with a tub at ¥875,000 for a shorter journey and ¥1.4 million for a longer one. A “royal” twin room with windows on both sides of the car was recently listed at ¥385,000 per person, double occupancy.

The Aru Ressha is known as a “dessert train” that runs between Hakata and Yufuin in Kyushu. The one-way, three-hour itinerary is just enough time to indulge in appetizer, fish, meat and dessert courses for ¥35,000 per person. The train is decorated with black and gold arabesques on the outside and baroque styling inside.

The Spacia X offers a more budget-minded luxury experience. This six-carriage train equipped with plush sofas and private lounges links Tokyo to Nikko, a picturesque city in Tochigi Prefecture. Simran Nagra, a 33-year-old Canadian actuary who lives in Tokyo, used the train for a two-hour, ¥3,840 trip in July to the hot springs resort of Kinugawa Onsen. “I was really excited to ride it because it’s a luxury train, but has very affordable pricing,” she said. “The windows are huge and hexagonal, to highlight the views,” she said, and the cafe car featured Nikko specialties including craft beer on tap, two types of sake and locally sourced coffee.

GranClass was the choice out of necessity for the Australian journalist Jake Sturmer, 35, and his wife, Rachel, in 2018. “We had just moved to Japan, some friends invited us on a trip, and the only seat available for us to travel was on GranClass,” he said, referring to the first-class cabin on the Shinkansen. “What a luxury it was,” he said, mentioning the large, cushy seats, the hot towels to cleanse hands and faces, and bento boxes they were served during a two-hour ride from Tokyo to Iiyama in Nagano Prefecture.

The Train Suite Shiki-Shima was created to contribute to the recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan.

Riders can choose from four seasonal routes lasting from one to three nights and departing from Tokyo. One goes northward along the Sea of Japan to Hakodate and the Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park in Hokkaido Prefecture. Another is a wintertime itinerary through the snowy Tohoku region, where guests will get off the train to view traditional dancing and participate in woodwork or sewing workshops with local artisans. Prices range from ¥420,000 to ¥1.3 million per person, based on double occupancy in a sleeper car.

Shinobu Ohashi, 34, a paper-cutting artist who lives and works in Saitama, Japan, used the Shiki-Shima in December 2020 and April 2022. “I wanted to experience the design of the Shiki-Shima train, which I had seen on TV and in magazines, and the hospitality provided,” she wrote in an email.

The attention to detail impressed her: “When my companion complimented the garnishes that were offered only to the women on the dishes,” she said, “he was then also brought the same ones. We were both surprised.”

During one trip the cherry blossoms in Hakodate were in full bloom, she said: “We were taken to a cherry blossom viewing spot that was not on the trip schedule.”

The train has special meaning for her. “I am from the Tohoku region, from Fukushima Prefecture,” she said. “Even though a lot of time has passed since the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan, I believe that Shiki-Shima is a reassuring presence.”
