The songbank at this guest-favorite hangout features thousands of jams to choose from. Steal the show on the mainstage with a dedicated emcee or reserve a private room for just the family. You can also head to the AquaTheater and settle in for inTENse, a dazzling performance that showcases world-class divers and aerialists as they tip-toe across tightropes and plunge into the deepest pool at sea. Or allow a talented team of singers and dancers to wow you with top-notch live and virtual performances inside the largest theatrical venue at sea during Voices: An Intimate Performance on a Grand Scale.

Now that you’re acquainted with some of the many wow-worthy experiences onboard Wonder of the Seas , it’s time to start planning the perfect family cruise. Keep in mind, these are only a handful of the many attractions, shows, dining options, and activities that await — check your Cruise Compass or the Royal Caribbean app for daily pop-ups, deckside events, and more surprises at sea.

Paid moment from American Express and Delta

With complimentary summer-camp-like kids’ programs led by youth counselors, alongside a host of attractions, it's no surprise the best family cruises deliver an environment where every family member can have fun on vacation. In addition to family time, kids get to hang out with other kids while parents and grandparents are free to be adults.

Youngsters are a major part of cruise ship design, from play rooms and teen clubs to crew members who know how to keep young people happy. Choose your ship wisely, because newer and recently renovated ships tend to have the most exciting attractions (check out our list of best cruise ships in the world if you want to know more). Accommodations at sea can be tight, so splurge on the largest cabin or suite you can afford; there is such a thing as too much togetherness on any trip. Beyond that, read our picks for the best cruise lines for families—and get going with booking. (Fares shown are per adult, with reduced fares for kids sharing a cabin.)

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad has partnered with National Geographic for a kid-friendly adventure program.

Royal Caribbean

For families, a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s massive ships —some can carry more than 6,000 passengers—is as exciting as going to an amusement park. Collectively, the ships offer ice skating rinks, simulated surfing machines, zip-lines, bumper cars, laser tag, carousels, and thrill slides. The Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) includes fun science experiments, while teens get to party in their own disco. The new largest ship in the world, the 6,998-passenger Wonder of the Seas , boasts a fantastical undersea-themed Wonder Playscape, an outdoor playground with climbing walls, slides, games, and interactive features — such as a mural featuring sea creatures that come to life at the slightest touch. The ship sails from Barcelona and Rome (the port of Civitavecchia) this summer and fall. Seven-night sailings from $952 .

Disney Cruise Line

The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Teens also have dedicated spaces onboard: Vibe for teens ages 14-17 and Edge for those between the ages of 11-14. Three-night Bahamas sailings from Port Canaveral from $1,751 in winter 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral on Mardi Gras this summer from $549.

RitzCarlton Yacht

Ritz-Carlton's all-suite Evrima yacht comes staffed with an on-board youth counselor.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Norwegian Prima will be cruising from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), beginning in December. Seven-night western Caribbean sailings in winter 2023 from $849.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Seven-night Discovery Princess sailings to Alaska this summer from $399.

Lindblad Expeditions

For multigenerational families who prefer a nature-focused, soft-adventure experience, Lindblad partners with National Geographic for a program that has kids collecting plankton, driving inflatable Zodiacs, and otherwise earning points to become a National Geographic Global Explorer. The program is available on cruises in the Galapagos, Alaska, Baja, Mexico, and Antarctica—all places you can spot wild creatures and the kids are encouraged to record sightings in a field book. Nine-night summer sailings in the Galapagos from $7,710.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

On the luxury side, Ritz-Carlton’s first yacht , the all-suite Evrima , launches in late August with year-round signature Ritz Kids programming. Kids ages 4-12 get a dedicated space staffed by a full-time youth counselor. The creative program features an environmental element—kids may participate an upcycle art challenge or a water-sampling science experiment. Unlike the complimentary programs on mainstream lines, this one comes with an additional charge: $45 each for three-hour morning and afternoon sessions, and $65 for early-evening programming. Seven-night Caribbean sailings from San Juan from $4,900.

One love: falling for a first time mum and daughter Caribbean Cruise

Is a Caribbean cruise aboard MSC Seascape the perfect single parent vacation? Katie Bowman takes her daughter on a first time cruise and, happily, everything turns out ship-shape, and then some!

msc-seascape-sailing-out-of-miami

MSC Seascape sailing out of Miami

First things first, before my mother calls in a panic, I am not a single parent. I’ve been with my husband for a couple of decades and together we have one firecracker of a daughter, Elisa, who’s now 10 years old. However, on this trip I was travelling as a single parent. My husband couldn’t get away from work, so Elisa and I decided to go it alone. Together.

MSC Seascape and the calm Caribbean

Caribbean cruises are a good fit for short breaks

This was no small matter for me since my other half is the one forever whizzing down water slides, jumping into unheated swimming pools, racing to the rollercoaster queue, and all of those of other cool-dad pursuits I baulk at.

Don’t get me wrong, I do more than my fair share of vacation parenting. Who else is going to remember to pack the anti-tangle goggles? Plus, I’ve also clocked up a decent number of log-flume miles myself. But it was a daunting prospect, nonetheless, to play both roles for a full week’s vacation: parent and playmate.

And, single parents, before you roll your eyes at me (“You’re doing this for one week?! Try 365 days of the year!” I hear you snort), I am doing more than enough eye-rolling at myself already. What single parents achieve on a daily basis has always blown my mind. Even before I gave birth, I considered these grown-ups to be walking-talking super-heroes: minus cape and mask.

Need a vacation where the destination provides constant entertainment?

But, as they say, it is what it is. I was a single parent for this trip, and when searching for the perfect family vacation I had many of the same concerns that a single parent has. I needed all hands on deck on the type of vacation where the destination provides constant entertainment; stepping in to fill those gaps when we had played enough Battleships or comprehensively covered the subject of Harry Styles versus Miley Cyrus.

So it was, we booked two places on our first ever cruise: a seven-day Caribbean circuit from Miami, via the Bahamas, Cozumel Mexico, Grand Cayman and Jamaica .

Italian-owned, we had heard that MSC was a cruise company that puts families first, so we opted for its newest ship MSC Seascape; on board there was a Pirates Cove Aquapark and four water slides, dedicated LEGO activity days, as well as a Robotron rollercoaster and Hall of Games arcades. That’s before we even touch on the countless swimming pools and kids’ clubs across four different age brackets. And, from the moment we boarded, we could see the family focus was genuine.

It wasn’t wall-to-wall face-painting and climbing frames, but it was diverse, and young. There were grandmas from Chile on mobility scooters, French parents with teens, German blended families bringing together multiple generations, and same-sex parents with newborns , who didn’t leave the ship for seven days in a row. “We’re all sleeping so well,” they beamed, “we don’t want to jinx it!”

First stop: Ocean Cay private island in the Bahamas

Our first stop was the Bahamas – or Ocean Cay, a private island owned by MSC that is part of the Bahamian archipelago but invites only cruise crew and passengers. This means we swam in clear waters and walked fine-white Bahamian sands, but never actually saw a local, nor ate island food.

It was pristine and gave off proper Robinson-Crusoe fantasy vibes but didn’t tick the adventure box for us just yet. This wasn’t the consensus among other folks though, many of whom specifically choose an MSC itinerary because “Ocean Cay gives us a taste of paradise even though we have Grandpop and the twin buggy with us,” one Canadian mum explained to me. Ocean Cay and its paved trails, small size and easy lagoon snorkeling was exactly what they wanted.

The calm Caribbean waters in spring were plain sailing

The next day was to be our first “at sea” and, truth be told, I was apprehensive. Would we get seasick? Would it feel strange not to see land? We’d requested a balcony room as I was sure I’d feel claustrophobic, but we barely used our cabin, let alone the balcony.

The calm waters of the Caribbean in spring were plain sailing; only on one evening, crossing an open channel of water, did we feel a wavy sensation, but this was funny rather than nauseating, and I didn’t see a single case of seasickness in our week away.

Today actually became the day we fell in love with the ship, getting to know every deck and uncovering activities barely mentioned in the MSC pre-departure info – “there’s a 5D virtual-reality gaming cinema on board?!” screamed Elisa, before we played against each other a dozen times, she slaying my score.

Then there was the open-air basketball court, over-water glass Infinity Bridge, poolside Bingo (in four languages!), a gelato shop with ice-cream cone-shaped seats, and a night-time hot tub as the stars enveloped us like glitter. We could have been on this ship for a month and never run out of things to do.

Shore excursions are all part of the MSC Seascape experience

Next, Cozumel, a Mexican island off the Yucatan coast, not far from Cancun. We tried our first “shore excursion” today – these are the ship-arranged day trips that included a visit to Mayan ruins, ancient cenote swimming caves, margarita-making classes, and taco street-food tours.

This being out first cruise, we took baby steps and chose a beach club with use of snorkel kit, SUP boards and kayaks, saving us the space in our suitcases. Elisa tried her first chilaquiles in Cozumel – tortilla chips in hot sauce and cheese – and did some impressive haggling over a ceramic toucan in the arts-and-crafts market. Mexico: tick.

Our day swimming with stingrays on Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman involved another shore excursion: we were off to swim with stingrays. We also snorkeled and saw starfish on the same boat trip – Elisa’s favourite stop – and had time on our return to eat lunch at a waterfront fish shack. Conch fritters and callaloo rice arrived at the table, while Elisa tried a virgin Pina Colada.

Barracuda swam right up to shore from our over-water spot before it was time to embark once again. We had had a brilliant day, but still Elisa was glad when it was “time to go home” to the ship. Four days in, and MSC Seascape was already her favorite destination.

Katie & Elisa, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Ocho Rios in Jamaica is the perfect end to our MSC Seascape cruise

Last stop of the itinerary: Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We ventured out independently today, spontaneously hiring the services of Mr Harmoni – island driver, tour guide and impromptu soul singer – after we started chatting with him at the taxi rank.

We struck gold, as he took us on a two-hour tour, through the majesty of Fern Gully – a winding road through prehistoric ferns and palms – then via his home village, where he showed us native fruits and shared home-cooked recipes, before stopping at lesser-known Ocean on the Ridge viewpoint for a family photo (you don’t get many of those when traveling as a single parent).

dunns-river-falls-ocho-rios-jamaica

Dunn’s River Falls are spectacular but the onboard waterpark wins

The last car stop was Dunn’s River Falls, where we watched people climbing the gorgeous sun-dappled tiers of water but decided against it ourselves. Elisa had made a friend the previous day and was keen to get back on Seascape for a date they’d made at the transparent, over-water slides. We made our way “home”, Mr Harmoni singing our goodbyes.

It was great to watch Elisa and her new pal Ashlyn shooting each other with water guns back on board, shrieking at the top of their lungs, but when I asked Elisa if she’d like to see her friend for dinner, she said she’d “rather it be just the two of us on our last night”.

For all the bells and whistles on board – welcome as they were – the best memory we have, now we’re back, is giggling in the hot tub under the stars, thrilled to find it empty, just for us. With MSC Seascape acting as the grown-up on this trip, feeding us, watering us, cleaning our cabin (thus avoiding messy-bed wars), even entertaining each day, we’d both been able to switch off and be kids. As a parent – whether there’s one, two, or three of you – that’s priceless.

Breaking news, royal caribbean cruise passenger with dementia, 66, disappears while on vacation in mexico.

An American cruise passenger, who was recently diagnosed with dementia, vanished while he was on vacation with his family in Mexico

Edmond Bradley Solomon III, a 66-year-old South Carolina resident, had taken the trip down to the Caribbean on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas and had planned to spend the day at port in Cozumel, Mexico, according to WCBD-TV .

The former VA critical care nurse had disappeared minutes after getting off the ship at the Caribbean port last week.

Solomon, who goes by Brad, was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III disappeared while on vacation in Mexico with his wife last week.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Solomon’s daughter Savanah Miller told the outlet. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

Solomon and his wife Mimi disembarked from the ship around 1:30 p.m. on April 3 and stopped for a restroom break before leaving the terminal when the nightmare unfolded.

“When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there,” Miller said. “She thought he might still be in the bathroom so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out.”

A family member with the couple had gone into the bathroom to check on Solomon but discovered he wasn’t there.

Solomon was reported missing just after 8 p.m. Wednesday and a search and rescue operation was launched at 9 p.m., according to local agency Cozumel Civil Protection.

A missing person's flyer made for Solomon by local authorities.

During the search, local police received a call from a taxi driver who claimed to have picked up a tourist matching Solomon’s description at around 2:30 p.m. and was asked to drop the American off at a road with beach access, according to Mexico News Daily, citing authorities.

The taxi driver allegedly said Solomon had paid for the ride using his watch because he claimed he didn’t have any money.

Photos captured search and rescue efforts unfolding in wooded areas during the day and night.

“The search focused on the vicinity of Isla de la Pasión and all the beaches and businesses in the northern hotel zone were visited, without success,” a statement from the Civil Protection read.

Solomon's daughter Savannah Miller says she flew to Mexico to help in the search of her father.

Local police said Solomon had a necklace with a GPS, which only works when within 33 feet of his wife’s phone, and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, grey shorts, dark sunglasses and a blue hat.

Solomon was reportedly spotted later Wednesday evening along the road of Isla de la Pasión in Cozumel.

“The Public Security Directorate reported that Mr. Solomon was possibly wandering around the urban area.”

The distressed daughter didn’t learn about her father’s disappearance until the next morning.

“I got the call about 5:30 in the morning and I just froze,” Miller said. “I didn’t even know how to process this information.”

Miller and other family members had planned to travel down to Mexico to be with Mimi and help with the search for her father.

“I’m really looking forward to having Mimi by my side and being able to give my dad a hug again,” Miller told WCBD.

Miller and her cousins spent Saturday searching the city with her family and were told of several possible sightings of her father throughout the day.

Photos captured search and rescue efforts unfolding in wooded areas during the day and night.

She was told her father could be staying hydrated and using the bathroom at local churches.

“He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would,” Miller said in a post on Facebook.

A GoFundMe was set up with an original goal of $5,000 to help support the family. It has surpassed the mark and was at over $16,000 Sunday morning.

Several searches have been activiated and stopped throughout the several days Solomon has been missing.

Solomon and his wife were nurses in the Charleston area, where he worked as a critical care nurse at  Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center where Mimi has continued working.

“He liked to be with the people that he loved…he was always making sure that we were safe and we were cared for no matter who it was,” Miller told the outlet. “He’s always been a fixer and someone who’s just drawn to helping other people.”

The couple had boarded the Icon of the Seas, the World’s largest cruise ship on March 30 in Miami, Florida and made stops in Costa Maya, Mexico and Roatan, Honduras before docking in Cozumel around 8 a.m.

'Drunk' 20-year-old man missing after jumping off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship

  • A 20-year-old man on holiday with his family jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise.
  • The man has been missing since jumping overboard in front of his father and brother.
  • The US Coast Guard has launched a search operation.

Insider Today

A 20-year-old man jumped off the Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas cruise on Thursday morning while vacationing with his family.

The passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, jumped overboard at about 4 a.m. and has been missing since.

The US Coast Guard said on X on Thursday that its crews were "searching for a 20-year-old man who went overboard from the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship near The Bahamas.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement: "Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time."

Passengers on the Liberty of the Seas ship described the tragedy as a "spur-of-the-moment decision."

Passenger Bryan Sims told the New York Post that the missing passenger was "pretty drunk" and that they had hung out in the hot tub until 3:30 a.m.

Sims said that when they left the hot tub, they encountered the drunk passenger's father while approaching the elevators.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk," said Sims.

The unidentified passenger reportedly told his father, "I'll fix this right now," and jumped out of the window.

Fellow passengers said his father and brother witnessed the "impulsive" leap.

Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately."

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

The US Coast Guard said USCG Cutter Seneca and Air Station Miami HC-144 crews were conducting the search.

The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger jumped overboard.

The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate 3,634 passengers, served by a crew of about 1,300.

The chances of you falling overboard off a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, About 31 million passengers traveled on a cruise, and about 10 people went overboard, of which two miraculously survived, Business Insider reported .

"Even one incident is one too many," CLIA told Business Insider, explaining that "the vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

Last month, a 23-year-old man who felt seasick fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship while crossing the North Sea in Europe and was presumed dead.

In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America.

According to a Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard from 2009 to 2019 were successfully rescued.

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4am on Thursday.

The 18-storey ship was sailing off the coast of Cuba when the as-yet-unidentified man jumped off one of the decks.

According to onlookers, his father and brother watched helplessly as he leapt over the side, the New York Post reports.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” passenger Deborah Morrison told The Post.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

In a statement to The Post, Royal Caribbean said its crew immediately sprang into action following the incident.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” the statement reads.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

News of the incident quickly spread among the guests — and many of them tried to help in any way they could.

“The early morning was definitely sombre as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship said.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” Ms Fouse continued.

“They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare.

According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

The incidents, whether accidental or intentional, are often deadly.
