A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server .

To be clear, the error indicates that while the server itself is reachable , the specific page showing the error is not.

404 Not Found individual websites frequently customize error messages. So, keep in mind that the error might show up in just about any way imaginable, depending on what website it's shown from.

How You Might See the 404 Error

Here are some common ways in which you might see the HTTP 404 error displayed:

  • 404 Not Found
  • The requested URL [URL] was not found on this server
  • Error 404 Not Found
  • 404 File or Directory Not Found
  • HTTP 404 Not Found
  • 404 Page Not Found
  • Error 404. The page you're looking for can't be found.

These error messages can appear in any browser or any operating system . Most display inside the browser window just as web pages do.

404 errors received when opening links via Microsoft Office applications generate a The Internet site reports that the item you requested could not be found (HTTP/1.0 404) message inside the MS Office program.

When Windows Update produces one, it appears as a code 0x80244019 or as WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_NOT_FOUND .

Cause of HTTP 404 Errors

Technically, an Error 404 is a client-side error, implying that it's your mistake, either because you mistyped the URL or the page has been moved or removed from the website, and you should have known.

Another possibility is if a website has moved a page or resource without redirecting the old URL to the new one. When that happens, you'll receive a 404 error instead of being automatically routed to the new page.

Microsoft IIS web servers sometimes give more specific information about the cause of 404 Not Found errors by suffixing a number after the 404 , as in HTTP Error 404.3 - Not Found , which means MIME type restriction .

How to Fix the 404 Not Found Error

Retry the web page by pressing F5 , clicking/tapping the refresh/reload button, or repeatedly trying the URL from the address bar.

The 404 Not Found error might appear for several reasons even though no real issue exists, so sometimes a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for.

Check for errors in the URL . Often times this error appears because the URL was typed wrong or the link selected points to the wrong URL.

Move up one directory level at a time in the URL until you find something.

For example, if www.web.com/a/b/c.htm gave you the 404 Not Found error, move up to www.web.com/a/b/ . If you get nothing here (or an error), move up to www.web.com/a/ . This should lead you toward what you're looking for or confirm that it's no longer available.

If you have moved up to the website's home page, try to run a search for the information you're looking for. If the site doesn't have a search function, try navigating to the page you want using category links to dig deeper into the site.

Search for the page from a popular search engine . It's possible that you simply have the entirely wrong URL in which case a quick Google or Bing search should get you where you want to go.

If you do find the page you were after, update your bookmark or favorite to avoid the HTTP 404 error in the future.

Clear your browser's cache if you have any indication that the 404 message might just be yours. For example, if you can reach the URL from your phone but not from your tablet, clearing the cache on your tablet's browser might help.

You might also consider clearing your browser's cookies or at least the one(s) involved with the website in question if clearing the cache didn't work.

Change the DNS servers used by your computer, but usually only if an entire website gives you a 404 error, especially if the website is available to those on other networks (e.g., your mobile phone network or a friend in another city).

Sitewide 404s errors on a website aren't common unless your ISP or government filters/censors websites. No matter the reason, if it does happen, giving another set of DNS servers a try is a good step to take. See our Free and Public DNS Servers List for some alternatives and instructions on doing this.

Contact the website directly. If they've removed the page you're after, then the 404 error is completely legitimate, and they should be able to tell you that. If they've moved the page and are generating errors instead of redirecting visitors to the new page, they'll be happy to hear from you so they can fix it.

If you suspect everyone is getting a 404 error for this site, but you're not sure, a quick check on X (formerly Twitter) might help clear it up. All you have to do is search X for #websitedown , as in #facebookdown or #youtubedown . Users on X are usually the first to start talking about a website outage. Learn how to tell if a website is down for everyone or just you for some more help.

Finally, if all else fails, wait. No, it's not fun, but it might be your only course of action, especially if you're confident the 404 error shouldn't be happening (i.e., the page really should be at the URL you have and others are having the same problem and find it equally strange).

You can find 404 errors on your own website through tools like DeadLinkChecker.com and ATOMSEO .

Errors Similar to Error 404

Some other client-side error messages related to the 404 Not Found error include 400 Bad Request , 401 Unauthorized , 403 Forbidden , and  408 Request Timeout .

Several server-side HTTP status codes also exist, like the popular 500 Internal Server Error . You can see all of them in our HTTP Status Code Errors  list.

If you’re aware of pages on your website with broken links, redirect or correct them. If a 404 error appears due to a deleted page, consider restoring or redirecting it to new and related content.

If you use WordPress, 404 errors often appear because of redirect conflicts or permalink issues. Fix broken links for individual pages or posts. Visit the WordPress dashboard and update permalink settings if it's a site-wide problem.

13 Best Ways to Fix Safari Can’t Find Server on Mac

Although there are good Safari alternatives, Mac users keep going back to the default browser for several reasons. It is lightweight, consumes less RAM, has thoughtful themes, and gets better with every major macOS update. But it’s all irrelevant when you keep running into the ‘Safari can’t find server on Mac’ error. Let’s troubleshoot the issue once and for all.

mac safari 404 not found

Several reasons can affect Safari’s operations on Mac. You can’t pinpoint the issue to a specific factor only. Before we start with the fixes, let’s understand why it happens in the first place.

Why Can’t Safari Connect to Server on Mac

If your Mac has network connection issues, Safari can’t connect to the server normally. You will keep running into the ‘Safari can’t find server’ error. Apart from Wi-Fi problems, here are several reasons behind the irritating problem.

  • Wi-Fi connectivity issues
  • Router malfunction
  • Outdated Safari browser on Mac
  • iCloud Privacy Rely outage
  • Issues from a specific website
  • An active VPN network
  • Incorrect URL

How to Fix Safari Not Connecting to Server on Mac

Before you switch to a Safari alternative like Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome , use the tricks below to fix issues with the default macOS browser. We will start with the basics and move to advanced tricks to fix the ‘Safari can’t find server’ issue on Mac.

1. Reload Webpage

Because of the sketchy internet connection on your Mac, the Wi-Fi network may fail to establish a connection to the server. You can simply hit the reload button or use the command + R keys and try to connect again.

image 318

2. Double Check URL

Did you type the correct URL of the website? Even a single typo in a web address leads to the ‘Safari can’t find server’ issue on Mac.

You should recheck the web URL, fix any typos, and try reloading the webpage.

3. Check If the Website Is Down

Maybe the Safari can’t find server error is indeed true. Every website stores the content and other data on a third-party or company’s own server.

The tech giants like Netflix, Amazon, etc., use AWS, while some prefer Microsoft Azure. Smaller websites opt for several web-hosting solutions. And these servers do face occasional outrage. You can confirm the issue from Downdetector .

If the issue is indeed from the server side, you have no option but to wait for the admin to fix the issue.

4. Check the Network Connection on Your Mac

You should ensure a stable network connection on your Mac. Most Macs support dual-band Wi-Fi frequency. We recommend connecting to a 5GHz Wi-Fi frequency on your Mac.

Step 1: Open Control Center from the top-right corner.

Step 2: Connect to a high-speed Wi-Fi network.

mac safari 404 not found

Step 3: You can visit fast.com on Safari to confirm an active internet connection.

Visit fast.com

Continue reading if the issue persists.

5. Restart Router

Do you face the ‘Safari can’t find server error’ on iPhone and other devices too? If your home or office router is acting up, internet connectivity won’t work. You should turn off the router, remove it from the power plug, and switch it on again.

6. Check with Your Local Internet Service Provider

Most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) offer unlimited data with their plans. If you work with limited data and consume all the internet bandwidth, Safari can not connect to the server. You should open your local ISP’s app and check available data for your account.

You should also check if your local ISP is facing server-side issues. You can visit Downdetector and search for your ISP.

7. Disable VPN

Are you using a VPN on your Mac? An active VPN connection may interfere with some websites from specific regions. When you connect to a VPN network, your Mac connects to a different server in another region. When such a server faces an outage, you may run into issues like ‘Safari can’t find server on Mac’.

You have two options here. If you want to continue with VPN, connect to another server. You can also completely turn off the VPN and try again. You should open the VPN app from the Mac Menubar and make the necessary changes. If an app update is available, make sure to install it on your Mac.

9. Disable iCloud Private Relay

With the macOS Monterey update, Apple has enabled iCloud Private Relay for iCloud+ subscribers. It reroutes the internet traffic through an Apple-branded server and protects your exact location.

Some location-based websites may require your exact location and have problems working with iCloud Private Relay enabled.

Thankfully, Apple allows users to disable iCloud Private Relay for a specific Wi-Fi connection on a Mac. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open the System Preferences menu on Mac.

Step 2: Go to Network > Wi-Fi.

10. Disable Firewall and Anti-Virus Software

Your Mac doesn’t need third-party anti-virus software. If you have installed such an app, disable or remove it. An active firewall may affect Safari on Mac. You should disable it.

Step 1: Open System Settings on Mac.

Step 2: Select Network and open Firewall.

Step 2: Go to Network > Advanced menu.

image 321

Step 3: Select DNS from the top menu bar.

Step 3: Click OK and close the app.

You can now check if Safari is working fine.

12. Disable Content Blocker for the Website

While content blockers may offer a better reading experience on the Safari browser, they heavily affect the website revenue. That’s why some websites won’t let you read an article unless you disable the content blocker for them.

In this case, you are connecting to a server in the Safari browser. But you won’t be able to browse anything on the website. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Hover the mouse to the search bar at the top and right-click on it. If you are using a trackpad, then use a two-finger click on the trackpad.

image 324

Step 2: It will open a pop-up menu to modify website settings. Disable the content blocker on it. Reload the website, and you are all set to read the post.

13. Update macOS

The ‘Safari cannot open the page because the server cannot be found’ issue can be due to an outdated browser build on your Mac. Apple bundles Safari with macOS updates. You can update macOS to the latest version to enjoy all the new Safari add-ons and bug fixes.

Step 1: Open System Settings and scroll to General. Select Software Update.

mac safari 404 not found

Step 2: Download and install the latest macOS update.

mac safari 404 not found

If you have an old macOS build, you need to update macOS from the System Preferences > Software Update menu.

Switch to Safari on Mac

Some websites may not be properly optimized for Safari on Mac. You can temporarily switch to Google Chrome and check if it’s working. Did you manage to fix Safari issues on Mac? Which trick worked for you? Share your findings in the comments below.

404 error after iOS update on iPhone and iPad

Hello clarefromfaversham,

It would appear from your post that you are having some issue with Safari accessing web page via links.

The first thing we would recommend is to power cycle the devices. While simple, this can refresh the operating systems, apps and connections.

If the issue continues, isolating where the problem is happening would be the next steps.

On the iPhone, tap on Settings > Wi-Fi and toggle Wi-Fi off. This will force the device to use cellular data. Test and see if the same thing happens. If everything works as expected, then test on another Wi-Fi network. You may also want to restart the modem/router to see if that helps.

You can also clear the history and cookies from Safari. This can help by forcing Safari to reload the website: Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Safari is unable to reach localhost (127.0.0.1)

I've encountered a really strange Mac problem: Safari is unable to connect to localhost whereas all other applications can connect as normal (Firefox, Chrome, ping, etc.).

My /etc/hosts is the standard setup:

Question: Have anyone else encountered this? What could be the problem?

Update #1: I have a server running on localhost:8080. When accessing from Safari I get the error message "Safari could not connect to the server". " http://localhost:8080/ " works flawlessly in Firefox and Chrome.

Update #2: Same problem with " http://127.0.0.1:8080/ " - so it does not seem to be related to resolving localhost to 127.0.0.1.

  • 1 For the archives (see comments at grawity's answer), though it does not solve the question above: on my Mac OS X 10.6, with the /etc/hosts as above and IPv6 left at its default automatic , requesting 127.0.0.1:8080 makes Safari use IPv4 (which could still connect to a server providing IPv6). Requesting localhost:8080 makes Safari use IPv6 . –  Arjan Sep 7, 2009 at 15:14

I think we need a little more information based on your question.

I'm going to guess you have a web server running to accept requests? I currently don't, and Safari won't connect to 127.0.0.1, because it "Couldn't find 127.0.0.1" - even though I can ping it just fine.

So first, you need to have something running. Secondly, have you tried connecting to testing.localhost with Safari, just incase the two entries are confusing Safari (this is entirely possible).

When you say "applications can connect as normal" with Chrome and Firefox, what are you seeing? The web page you're expecting to see? A different error?

I downloaded and installed MAMP, and I could not reproduce this error.

Some forum threads suggest IPv6 resolution is causing this issue. I would be inclined to turn off IPv6 and remove the entry from the hosts file (temporarily just for testing)

  • Apple Menu > System Preferences
  • Select your Network Connection > Advanced
  • Configure IPv6 > Off

Apply, restart, and see how it goes.

  • 1 I had the same problem. I removed the IPv6 lines from /etc/hosts and it is working. Thanks for the hint. –  tamasd Aug 21, 2011 at 10:26

I've had this happen before -- using http://computername.local/ worked for me, but I'm unsure why it would be different than just using a name in a host file.

ericvg's user avatar

  • the problem might be that the connection to 127.0.0.1 goes through the interface lo0, whereas computername.local doesn't need to... –  Atmocreations Sep 7, 2009 at 17:01

Comment out the line:

from your /etc/hosts file. Apparently this would be caused by IPv6 support in Safari.

Snark's user avatar

  • You may be right, but 127.0.0.1:8080 does not work either and I don't think that would rely on anything from the hosts file. (However, like EvilChookie answered: disabling IPV6 in the network settings may have a different result.) –  Arjan Sep 7, 2009 at 6:59

Some applications decide to bind to only a single interface - 192.168.13.37, for example, if that is the address assigned to eth0 or such - instead of using 0.0.0.0 for all interfaces.

Others might be using only IPv6 addresses ::1 (localhost) or :: (all interfaces). Try http://[::1]:8080/ in this case.

u1686_grawity's user avatar

  • Interesting! The python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8080 does not support http://[::1]:8080/ but the built-in Apache (Web Sharing) does. (Though, if the application would only allow some address or some protocol, then wouldn't other browsers show the same problems while connecting?) –  Arjan Sep 7, 2009 at 8:04
  • Arjan: Maybe Safari first tries IPv4, gets "Connection Refused", and stops trying? I don't actually know. –  u1686_grawity Sep 7, 2009 at 11:11
  • When using Listen 8080 or Listen [::1]:8080 in Apache's /etc/apache2/httpd.conf then sudo lsof -i :8080 shows that httpd is using IPv6 only. Next, requesting 127.0.0.1:8080 in Safari makes lsof show Safari uses IPv4, but still connects fine. Using localhost:8080 makes Safari use IPv6. Likewise Listen 127.0.0.1:8080 only enables IPv4. But: Listen localhost:8080 makes httpd use BOTH IPv4 and IPv6. Still: Safari handles all, on my Mac. (I wonder if @knorv has issues when using Apache or Python rather than the server (s)he is using. And if changing something like Listen helps.) –  Arjan Sep 7, 2009 at 12:10

i'm not going to answer your question directly, but offer an alternative solution: use virtualhostx to manage the local DNS. See also if MAMP is not a good solution for your local development needs (if that's what you're after).

  • Sorry, but this is totally unrelated to my question. I'm not even using Apache. –  knorv Sep 4, 2009 at 8:18

To ensure it's not an issue with your web server (like @nagul asked: what server are you using?), on my 10.6 Snow Leopard with IPv6 left at automatic , and even with 127.0.0.1 testing.localhost added to my /etc/hosts , the following works fine:

  • Change the Listen port of the built-in Apache from 80 to 8080: sudo vi /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
  • Run the built-in Apache by enabling System Preferences, Sharing, Web Sharing. Or restart using: sudo apachectl restart

Likewise, for me no problems using:

  • python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8080

I know you stated you're not using any proxy. Just in case there's any doubt: recent versions of Firefox allow you to choose between Firefox-specific network settings (which was the only option in older versions), and the system settings. Safari always uses the system settings. Of course, good proxy settings would ignore local addresses (defaults on my Mac for Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: *.local, *.lan, 169.254/16 ). Still, one could check if Firefox still works when making it use the system settings just like Safari. (Firefox Preferences, Advanced, tab Network, button Settings.)

(Anything in the server logs or Console logs? Which version of Mac OS?)

What's your DNS? some DNS providers like OpenDNS depends on your settings might prevent you from going somewhere, so to test it completely remove DNS and make sure you have no proxy configured as well

it sounds like your server may not be running on the ip and port you're expecting. what is output when you run the following in a terminal?

you should see a line corresponding to your server. if no line appears, then your server may be running on a different port.

Safari users seeing random '404 not found' on valid support.apple.com pages

For the past few weeks, I have run into a problem with links to Apple.com coming up 404 "not found." Specifically, these have all been links to pages on http://support.apple.com/ . For example, this morning I did a Google search for 10.7.3 combo . One of the first results was a link to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484 which came up 404.

Here's where it gets interesting: the link is only 404 in Safari. It works in Google Chrome and Firefox. If you reload the page in Safari (⌘ + R), it will load as usual. As if that wasn't strange enough, once it has loaded correctly, subsequent visits to pages at http://support.apple.com/ work fine... for a while. Then I will see the "We're sorry" page again.

Several TUAW staff members have been seeing this bug for a few weeks with Safari in 10.7.2; unfortunately, it is not fixed with 10.7.3. Fortunately the "workaround" is fairly simple: if you get a 404 page on support.apple.com, try reloading the page, or just use a different browser . You'll need to do so if you're downloading the combo update to fix install issues with 10.7.3 .

Software versions used: Mac OS 10.12.6. Firefox 55.0.3. Safari 10.1.2.

Problem: I get 404 page not found references when I follow links in email correspondence and in searches. When I do the SAME links in Safari I get the page. I'm also having issues with my Web mail settings where parts of the settings disappear when forwarding, replying, or composing email when I use HTML/plain text email. I have uploaded example images of each of these conditions. I have none of these issues when I use Safari.

What I have done: 1. Spent hours reading Firefox "how-to" files. 2. Cleared history, cache, and cookies with no change. 3. Downloaded and substituted the Beta version (56) of Firefox without change. 4. Trashed and re-downloaded Firefox current edition approx. 3 times both before and after the Beta version.

At this point I have no idea how to fix this. I am being forced to change my default browser to Safari which does not display the tabs, etc. in a way I prefer.

How do I fix this or is it something I can fix?

mac safari 404 not found

Chosen solution

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

If you use a bookmark then navigate to the web page starting with the main page or the sign in page in case there is a problem with this bookmark.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks and history and cookies and passwords and cache and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
