The day we went January 2020 the weather was not particularly cold, however the vehicle is an open air vehicle and we were all freezing. The driver gave us blankets about half way through. It was so cold it wasn't enjoyable. A lot of the houses pointed out were also places where someone "used" to live.
Wanted to see the homes of celebrities and Starline delivered on Viator’s behalf. Tour guide was knowledgeable and we got our full 2 hours plus!
After ringing twice and waiting 15 mins both times, (as they strongly suggested stating we could loose our tour if not confirmed 24 hrs before hand, even though we had a confirmation no We decided to go to the address 9 on our conformation letter
It was there that we were told that the no we were calling belonged to Viator and they had not yet put our request through to their tour After speaking to the girl about our situation who was extremely helpful managed to get us on the 3:30 pm tour
I think it would be better to email or text Viator to reconfirm as the wait time chews into your holiday and Mobil credit We were not happy about being left on hold for long periods of time just to reconfirm
The tour guide would have to be 1 of the best, he gave us enough time to get our photos while driving bye the Malibu homes Thank you Skyline Tours
This trip was the third we booked via Viator, the other two were good but this was a real waste of money. For a start the tour lasted 1hour and 20 minutes, somewhat short of the 2 hours promised. We did not stop at Malibu Pier , we just slowed down as we went past, the same happened at the Getty Museum and the stop at Malibu Beach was technically correct, except its at the far end of the beach, on a 50 yard strip of beach, you could not walk further as it was signposted as Private. All in all a real let down.

Let’s be honest, everyone who visits Los Angeles secretly hopes to spot a celebrity. After all, most of the Hollywood movie stars have a house in one of the fancy neighborhoods like Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu or Santa Monica. And they DO go out for dinners, drinks or shopping, right? Well, I have visited Los Angeles three times and I haven’t seen shit. The truth is that most of tourists visit Walk of Fame and other “must see” attractions and those are definitely NOT the spots to meet celebrities. There are some bars and restaurants where the stars usually hang out, but those places are not cheap and you need reservations to get there. The easiest option to get close to Hollywood celebrities is to visit their homes. Not literally, of course, but with the help of tours and guides who know exactly where most of them live. Last year I took Hollywood with movie star’s homes tour and if was pretty fun. We didn’t see celebrities washing their cars or taking out trash, however we did get a pretty good feeling about the neighborhoods, heard some “local stories” and saw a few movie locations. So, this year I decided to book another tour with Starline Tours and do the Malibu part. The tour is officially called Malibu Stars Homes tour and I liked it even better than the Hollywood one.
Basic details about Malibu Stars homes tour
Malibu Stars Homes tour itinerary – what to expect
You will start from Santa Monica pier where your guide (who is also your driver) will tell you a few jokes and tips about what to expect and how to get the most out of your tour. While driving the scenic Pacific Coast highway (also known as Highway 1) you will see the iconic Los Angeles coastline featured in Iron Man, Forrest Gump, Planet of the Apes and Baywatch. I do have to warn you that you will not stop at those locations, and you actually won’t be able to take decent photos from the bus. The celebrities homes start in Malibu area , and these are the ones which I remembered either because they are my favorites, or because the houses looked cool: Bruce Willis, Courtney Cox, Adam Sandler, Paris Hilton, Eva Longoria, Cher, Cindy Crawford, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mathew Perry, Jim Carrey, Jennifer Lopez and many, many more (some of them are “local” stars, not so familiar to us non-USA citizens).
Here is another warning : the bus will stop on the road for a minute or two in front of the popular ones, so you can get good photos, but don’t expect to see big dream houses or mansions like the ones you see in the magazines. Those are usually photographed with drones or from the front – what you will see is actually just garages and entrance doors; and they are NOT so impressive. However, you WILL see much more than in the Hollywood tour because here the houses are basically aligned by the road and most of them are not hidden behind the bushes. The biggest surprise for me was the stop we made at the entrance of Malibu Bluffs beach park, which overlooks the luxurious Malibu estates and the Pacific Ocean. The stop was short (the guide said we could have 5 minutes but we took 10 😉 ), but we got to walk on the beach and take some nice shots of the celebrities’ homes from the oceanside. There was a couple walking their dogs and I pretended that they were very important so I took a few shots 😊 You can see my Malibu Stars Homes gallery in my Facebook album .
Will I actually see celebrities in the Malibu Stars Homes tour?
The celebrities don’t just hang out in front of their garages , so don’t expect to see anyone. However, it is quite possible that you will see someone’s car parked in front, or if you are lucky, he or she will have his or her garage open (like Courtney Cox had in our case), so it does feel kind of exciting if you imagine they are “home”. Even though they are probably not, because let’s not forget that they have staff working for them, and most of these celebrities own a couple of houses in LA or around the world. What makes the tour special are the Starline guides who spice up the tour by saying stuff like “Paris Hilton is really friendly, she even talked to us last time when we saw her getting out of her car” or “Adam Sandler is the friendliest guy, he is always smiling and waving at us”… I am not sure how much of this is true, however if you imagine that they make several tours daily, there is probably a chance they actually meet someone from time to time .

At last, but not the least: Remember the spots and go back by yourself
Did you see the Hannah Montana beach house ?
Hi Hanna, to be honest, I don’t have a clue, I was more interested in Leo and Bruce Willis 😉

Tons of celebrities used to call the sunny sea townhome over the years, too.
John Travolta lived in Malibu during his Saturday Night Fever days. Eddie Murphy lived in Malibu, and then Charlize Theron bought his house. She has since sold it.
Jennifer Aniston lived in Malibu while her then-husband, Brad Pitt, filmed Fight Club. Later, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie shared a Malibu home while they were married. Ellen DeGeneres has since bought the home.
Bruce Willis used to share a home in Malibu with his then-wife, Demi Moore. And Jim Carrey recently sold his home in Malibu.
Malibu Colony is a gated community and one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Malibu, with many home addresses belonging to celebrities.
The Malibu Country Mart touts itself as California’s premier shopping, dining, and relaxing location. It’s a large outdoor “boutique mall” located right in the heart of Malibu. You will find upscale shops, a public playground, art galleries, a picnic area, restaurants, free Wi-Fi, and possibly some celebrities.
Fans have spotted Jillian Michaels, LeAnn Rimes, and Gwen Stefani browsing the shops at Malibu Country Mart. Others have spotted Simon Cowell and a Kardashian or two. Just keep your eyes peeled. If you spend some time here and down see a celebrity, you were definitely not paying enough attention!
Vintage Grocers is a high-end grocery store that only stocks “the freshest produce and seafood, the finest wines and gourmet items, and the very best meat, poultry and pork selections.” Basically, they sell the best of the best for the best of the best. That means you’re bound to spot some celebrities while you do your grocery shopping.
Fans have spotted Lady Gaga, Caitlyn Jenner, Denise Richards, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, and Shannen Doherty.
In fact, Lady Gaga was seen on a white horse leaving the Starbucks next door. She lives close by.
Malibu is a beach town located in Southern California. It is about 30 miles west of Los Angeles, about 18.5 miles north of Santa Monica, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from San Diego, and a seven-hour drive from San Francisco.
Since Malibu is right along the famous Pacific Coast Highway (aka PCH), many of the 12,645 residents opt to live close by for easy access. The city itself is 21 miles long. In fact, many of the signs around the city declare that Malibu is “21 miles of scenic beauty.” Locals and mostly surfers refer to the city as simply “the Bu.”
Residents and visitors alike can visit a number of beaches, including Surfrider Beach, Zuma Beach, Malibu Beach, Topanga Beach, Point Dume Beach, County Line, and Dan Blocker Beach.
Malibu has also become a residence of the rich and famous. Famous residents include Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, and Edward Norton, just to name a few.
There is a lot of things residents and visitors can do in Malibu, besides celebrity house hunting of course!
Malibu sits right on the cost, so you can visit any one of the gorgeous beaches, like Malibu Beach, Point Dume Beach, and Topanga Beach. Malibu also has a number of state parks, like Malibu Creek State Park and Point Mugu State Park.
We highly recommend Zuma Beach. It’s on the way to Vintage Grocers and is where the original Baywatch was filmed!
Malibu has museums – the Getty Villa is an educational center and museum that houses art from Greece, Rome, and Eturia. The Adamson House is a historic house and is known as the “Taj Mahal of Tile.”
If you’re looking for some great food, there is plenty of restaurants to choose from – especially places that have outdoor seating. Nobu is ones of those restaurants that have both. The sushi eatery is also great for celebrity sightings! The locals and star residents love eating at Taverna Tony, a Greek restaurant in the Malibu Country Mart. Mr. Chow, a Beijing-inspired eatery, is also a celebrity favorite.
For more great restaurants, check out Zagat’s list of 15 restaurants worth the drive to Malibu .
And, if you’re looking for a peaceful place to watch the sunset, Malibu Pier in California State Park is the perfect spot! You can also watch surfers, fish, and maybe even spot a dolphin. There are also places to grab a bite to eat and shop.
Lastly, Point Dume is gorgeous! Aside from tons of celebrity homes, park at Point Dume park and hike the easy trail to the top of the point. The view is incredible!
Johnny Carson was once Malibu’s most famous residents. The Tonight Show host, who passed away in 2005, moved into the lavish four-acre estate in the mid-1980s. The home was built in 1978 and designed by Ed Niles. The 7,083-square-foot estate features glassy, modern fixtures with sky-high ceilings.
Sidney, a film producer, and Caroline Kimmel purchased the home in 2007 from Carson’s widow for $46 million. However, many of the original home’s designs and Carson’s special touches remain. The Kimmels have placed the estate on the market for a whopping $81.5 million.
Back when Carson owned the home, he only had one bedroom. If he had any out-of-town guests, they would stay in the guest house across the street. But the home now has two bedrooms and four bathrooms. The guest house also has one bedroom, and the tennis pavilion has two bedrooms.

I love doing research for this blog. Writing This Ugly Beautiful City has given me an excuse to explore Los Angeles and do some things I didn’t do as a tourist. Activities like buying a star map or taking a hop-on, hop-off tour of the city. Today I talk about the time I took the Starline Malibu Celebrity Homes Tour in the name of research.
Table of Contents
As a long-time resident of Los Angeles, I felt like I might have missed my window to be a tourist. If I hadn’t done touristy things by a decade in, did that mean I couldn’t? I wondered if I would find those most popular L.A. activities as exciting now that I lived here. Now that I was a local, was I supposed to be annoyed by them like my fellow Angelenos? Would I find celebrity tours exciting if I could care less about celebrity culture? I needed to enlist a research assistant who loved the tourism and celebrity part of being in Los Angeles to help me find out.
I come from a long line of women who love gossip shows and celebrity news. From my great-grandmother, who watched Old Hollywood movies to learn English, to my mom, who has People Magazine on a lifetime renewal. I needed to wait until one of those women came to town. My willing research assistant was my mother.
We had done all of the Hollywood 101 activities before, and I wanted to level up. I needed to find a way to both explore a new area of L.A. and incorporate the rich and famous. Me being an architecture lover, we settled on Starline’s Malibu Celebrity Homes Tour as it checked a lot of boxes. Plus, it included some time on the beach as part of its itinerary.
If you aren’t familiar, Starline is a tour company offering driving tours of popular locations, celebrity homes, and hop-on-hop-off tours of Los Angeles. On any given day, you can see its double-decker buses roaming the city, taking tourists to Hollywood and Beverly Hills, stopping for photos at Urban Light .
To give you some added history, It is the oldest celebrity tour company in Los Angeles. It started in 1935 after Sid Grauman , of Grauman’s Chinese Theater gave the idea of driving star-obsessed tourists around Hollywood to his chauffeur. That chauffeur ended up quitting his day job and started Starline. It has grown from those early days of a single limo to a fleet of vehicles zig-zagging the city, studios, and celebrity homes in between.
The Malibu Celebrity Homes Tour departs from Santa Monica Pier due to its proximity to Malibu. You can find the office across from Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.
Our fellow passengers included a family from Wales and three sassy retirees from Texas, all wearing matching leopard print tops and visors. As we loaded into the ten-passenger van, the guide warned us that only one side of the headsets would be working. Not the best way to start off a tour where one listens to fun facts about the area for two-plus hours.
If you would like to play along, I have added links in the song titles for the California-themed music we heard during the tour.
Queued up for our departure was “ Fun, Fun, Fun ” by The Beach Boys. I had to hold my hand to my right ear to hear the song better over the wind and traffic noise.
In Santa Monica, we learned about all of the real estate that former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger owns in the area. Our guide told us that Arnold is usually out and about, but oddly not today. If only we had taken the tour the day before, we would have seen Arnold walking down Ocean Avenue with his son.
We headed south to the Hotel California, queued up on the tape deck was, of course, “ Hotel California ” by the Eagles. We then learned that this hotel was actually not the hotel in the song. (Music fact: There is no Hotel California–the song isn’t about staying in a hotel.)
We changed direction and headed north up the Pacific Coast Highway. As soon as you leave the pier area, there are beautiful views of the ocean dotted with multi-million dollar homes. Our guide pointed out our first set of celebrity homes. Late entertainer Bob Hope has houses dotted throughout Southern California, including a beach house he purchased early in his career. This home is close to where Leo Dicaprio and Charlize Theron have homes now. We lingered outside Charlize’s house as our guide talked about the area. He went on and on about how friendly Theron is, especially with the tour companies. He let us know that she would usually come out and say hello but for some reason, not today. If only we were there the day before, she would have been out talking to us.
Since we missed our chance to see Charlize, we headed onwards getting more fun facts about the houses on the route. We passed around a binder filled with the houses we were talking about. These included drawings and photos showing their full footprint on the beach.
The above photo is an example. What you see from the Pacific Coast Highway is often garages. The rest of the home stretches hundreds of feet toward the ocean, which you can’t see from the street.
Once we were in a more residential stretch of the PCH, we pulled over to the side of the road. We caught sight of a young man in a wetsuit trying to cross the highway with a surfboard.
The guide whispers into the microphone for our one ear to hear….
“That looks like a Bridges… ummm…maybe Jeff ‘s son, or grandson …I haven’t seen him before, but it does look like a Bridges brow line, hmmm… I am not sure.”
It was at that point that I felt more like I was on a safari, especially since I was surrounded by so much leopard print.
As we were unable to discern whether or not he was a Bridges, we started our tour again. My bet was a random guy, but the tour needed some drama.
This part of the drive is actually quite beautiful; to your left is the glistening pacific ocean and twenty-seven miles of beaches. If it were a hop-on, hop-off tour, I would have gotten off and walked The Strand for a while.
We spotted Duke’s Malibu , a restaurant popular with tourists for its Hawaiian fare and front-row seat to the ocean. It is named after Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, who is said to have brought surfing to Los Angeles from Hawaii.
As soon as our tour guide finished giving us that fun fact, I knew what was coming. I elbowed my mother and said, “I bet you $50, the next song is “ Wipeout ,” and it came blasting loudly in the one ear of our headsets.
Malibu is the land surf beaches and celebrity beachfront property. Just past Malibu Surf Beach is where Matthew “I don’t like shirts” McConaughey, Pamela Anderson, and Sting have homes. These houses are next to Malibu Lagoon, so we couldn’t pull up and get close. You know, in case they happened to be out that day.
Queue the “ Baywatch ” theme song on the tape deck.
Further north, past the gorgeously tiled Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum , is another stretch of celebrity homes. Many of the properties come as close to the ocean as legally allowed.
We were able to get a closer view of these homes when we got our ten minutes of beach time. It felt short, but we still had the rest of the tour to do before heading back to the Santa Monica Pier.
We hit the last of the homes just south of Paradise Cove. Taking a beach frontage road, we hovered outside Adam Sandler’s house, who is very nice and will come out to sign autographs, but of course, you guessed it, not today .
At a certain point, every time a celebrity was mentioned, my mom and I burst into giggles because we knew what was coming. “If only you were here yesterday….” I think we had fun with it, but I think the family from Wales was bummed.
We headed back, remembering where California Surf was born, Matthew McConaughy lived, and with the hope that Charlize had returned for the day so she could come out and shake our hands.
My verdict is that it is never too late to be a tourist in your own city.
I hope that these 70+ posts, including the Malibu Celebrity Homes Tour, give you some ideas for what to do in Los Angeles. That might mean a future trip once we can move about the world again or ideas for Angelenos to get to know Los Angeles better. I love being a tourist in my own city and I hope that what I have written has inspired you to do the same.
