The rich coastal waters of South Carolina provide a home to more than 700 species of seashells. Join us aboard our comfortable eco tour boat as we cruise down river to a remote barrier island known for its shell laden beach. Accessible only by boat, we will land on the beach and disembark on our hunt for the more common local shells. These include whelks, oysters, angel wings, arks, augers, quahogs, cockles, jingles, pen shells, slipper shells, and South Carolina’s state shell, the lettered olive. Before getting back on the boat, we’ll pick a few of our favorites to take back home as souvenirs.

During Easter Weeks (April 3 – April 14) our Shelling Tours are being offered as group tours. Group tours are $65 per person with a 6 person minimum to launch. Please call for available times. We are also happy to accommodate private Shelling Tours during these weeks upon request.

CAN’T FIND A DATE and time on our schedule that works for you? Please call us directly at  843-330-9777  and we’ll try our best to accommodate your request.

Morris Island Tours

The Morris Island Lighthouse at sunset

Undeveloped Morris Island is a popular excursion destination out of Charleston, Folly Beach and the neighboring sea islands, offering a secluded beach, shelling and fossil hunting, and views of the Charleston harbor and the historic Morris Island Lighthouse.

Although little physical trace remains of the island’s role in the Civil War (including one of the first military engagements of that war to employ African-American troops), Morris Island is considered one of the Charleston area’s most important battle sites of that conflict.

A boat is the easiest way to get to the island, and local tour companies offer a variety of excursions that can get you there. Some are open to the public and others are intended only for your group; some tours focus on the nature and ecology of the island and its vicinity, while others provide an opportunity to search for shells, sharks’ teeth and fossils on the beach.

A kayak or paddleboard tour is a more adventurous way to explore the sights of Morris Island, usually departing from the adjacent seafront town of Folly Beach. As these tours require either a reasonable amount of paddling or knowledge of how to handle a boat or board in the surf, at least some prior experience of the sports is advisable, and in some cases, required.

For nearby kayak or paddleboard tours that are suitable for beginners, see details of kayak or paddleboard tours of Folly Island.

  • Take a Shelling Expedition on Kiawah Island this Spring

You are here

  • Things to Do

12 Mar 2020

The coastal waters of South Carolina have more than 700 species of shellfish living in its waters, making shelling a favorite pastime for locals and travelers alike.  You'll find angel wings, pen shells, cockles, coquina, olive shells and more. Starfish, sea urchins and sand dollars can also be found. The jingle shell, horse conch, lima clams, White Art shells and scallop shells are others that are plentiful on our shores.

So, with all these seashells on our beaches, it makes sense to go on a shelling expedition. Some charter companies offer the opportunity to boat out to a barrier island for a couple of hours of shelling. Coastal Expeditions, for example, offers the Bull Island Beach Drop once a month when the tide is right.

Kiawah Island Resort also offers shelling expeditions starting in early April.

shelling.jpg

shelling charleston coast

Accessible only by boat, resort naturalists will escort you to a remote barrier island known for its abundance of shells. Important to our delicate coastline, we encourage photographs and apply shell collecting limits to help conserve the beach and its inhabitants for future generations.

Expeditions start on April 2 with a 10 a.m. to noon tour set. Times varying depending on the day so check before going. Some expeditions are 10 to noon; 10:30 to 12:30 and 1 to 3 p.m. There are even tours from 5 to 6 p.m. on certain days. The cost is $65/adult, $55/child (ages 3-11).

The tour meets at Andell Bluff, 4474 Betsy Kerrison Pkwy. on Johns Island, about a seven-minute drive from Kiawah’s main gate. Pull into the driveway when you see the yellow kayak. Bear to the right and go a few hundred yards where a guide will meet you in the designated area.

You can always just head out the door of your rental to go beachcombing. Our 411 Carolina Blvd. on Isle of Palms is just two blocks from the beach. 10C Seagrove Villa is an oceanfront property in Wild Dunes Resort that is a short walk to the beach. Hit the beach at low tide or when the tide is going out for the best shelling. Just after a storm is also a great time to find some treasures.

Trip Advisor Reviews

BEST TIME OF MY LIFE EVER I had so much fun finding shark teeth and other fossils. I totally recommend this trip. You can have fun on the beach while searching for some teeth. On the way to the island, you can see different types of animals in the water and air. You see birds like pelicans or dolphins and sometimes it can be a really fun learning experience. Enjoy 2.5 hours on this deserted island in the heart of the ACE Basin (boat ride is 15 minutes each way for a total of 3 hours).  You are likely to see bottle nosed dolphins on the boat trip over and back.  Teeming with birds, this is   a great place to find sand dollars or whelks. Some folks have even found WWII artifacts!

Shell Island in Edisto Beach, SC

' src=

Shell seeking is one of the most beloved activities vacationers take part in every summer on Edisto Beach, but there’s one place on the island that is a must-see for any seashell lover.

Shell Island is the nickname given to a sandbar island just across from Jeremy’s Inlet. This area can be seen by walking down the section of the beach in front of the beach campground of the South Carolina State Park. During low tide, it seems possible to walk across the inlet and onto the island, but the currents are very strong and the tide changes quickly making it possible to get stranded on the island.

A better way to get to the island is to call Edisto native Captain Ron Elliott at (843) 869-1937. Capt. Ron will take shell seekers out on a boat and leave them on the island for about two hours. Once on the island, visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of shells scattered on the island.

Many of the shells are bleached from years of direct sunlight that shines down and whitens the sand of the island. Several shells are in excellent condition making it possible to bring home some natural souvenirs from an Edisto vacation.

Shells on the island include the butterfly-shaped Angelwings, slender Wentletraps, spiny Apple murexes, scalloped calicos and cockles, Atlantic Jacknives, Slippersnails, Surfcalms, and Wing Oysters, Banded Tulips, Whelks, Channeled Duckclams, Wentletraps, and more.

It’s also possible to find hermit crabs scuttling about over shells and in the sand, but they generally prefer to be left alone.

Other treasures on Shell Island include sharks teeth, horseshoe crab shells, sun-bleached driftwood, sand dollars, starfish, sea glass, and fossils. Loggerhead turtle nests also dot the land, but are not to be disturbed.

Although it is possible to swim in the water off Shell Island, the undertow is slightly stronger than the undertow off of front beach, so swimmers are urged to take safety measures before entering the water. It’s also likely that small sand sharks are in the water (along with dolphin, turtles, jellyfish, and a host of other sea creatures) so always be on the lookout.

No trip to Edisto is complete without a visit to Shell Island at least once to see all the hidden treasures of the area.

GETTING TO CAPTAIN RON’S: Once an appointment has been made to go to Shell Island, visitors can get to Capt. Ron’s by taking Botany Bay Road past the AME church and follow the road until it dead ends. A sign for his eco-tours will be visible from the road.

What to Expect on Your Morris Island Tour

About Morris Island Lighthouse

The Morris Island Lighthouse has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1876. It served as an essential navigational aid for ships entering Charleston Harbor, guiding them safely through the treacherous waters of the area.

The Lighthouse faces an ongoing battle with coastal erosion. Over the years, the relentless forces of the Atlantic Ocean have caused significant erosion, resulting in the lighthouse being abandoned in 1962. Despite the encroaching waters, preservation efforts to protect and preserve the lighthouse as a historic landmark are ongoing.

You know how, sometimes, you book something expecting to be disappointed. This definitely is not one of those times. Josh was a great guide, interacting with all of us, providing great facts about the marsh eco system, and making sure to stop and let us watch the dolphin and birds. Then, we even had a good amount of time (between 45 minutes to an hour) on Morris island finding awesome shells and sand dollars. It isn’t very often that I spend money on something and think it was actually worth more, but that is what I thought after this cruise experience. My wife and I have even already talked about trying to do this again when we can bring our daughter. Mark, September 2019 (Trip Advisor)
