Matchbox Twenty Announces Three-Night Cruise Aboard the "S.S. Matchbox"

Some say "happiness is a mat that sits on her doorway." But in reality, happiness is a three-night cruise with Matchbox Twenty 's Rob Thomas at the helm.

For the first time ever, the 2004 People's Choice Awards selection for Favorite Musical Group is hitting the high seas aboard the Carnival Imagination "S.S. Matchbox," complete with a Matchbox 20 Q&A session, photo ops and, best of all, a "one-hour open bar cocktail party" to supplement the 71 other hours of cash-bar drinking.

- Matchbox Twenty Announces 2013 Theme Park and Casino Tour, Coming to SoFla

"Hey guys, what's up?" a "Smooth" Rob Thomas rhetorically asks in a video announcement posted to his band's official YouTube Channel. "We're Matchbox 20 and we wanted to let you know that we're going on a cruise this winter, and you're all invited."

Well, there's a catch. While y'all are certainly "invited," you're not going anywhere unless you pony up the dough.

But get this: it'll only cost you and a guest about $1,400 to sleep in thimble-sized stateroom with toilets that actually flush (read: Carnival Triumph) and catch an intimate MB20 show.

So, whether it's for Yourself or Someone Like You , nothing beats a "Long Day" in the "Real World" better than complimentary room service at "3 a.m." aboard a 70,000-ton floating city en route to the Bahamas -- especially if you're from up North , where Mother Nature took a snow-white dump earlier this month. In that case, you're "Overjoyed" just thinking about white sandy beaches, Piña Coladas and all-you-can-eat buffets.

Bon voyage!

Matchbox 20 Cruise. Friday, December 6, to Monday, December 9. Carnival Imagination, boarding at Port of Miami, 1015 N. America Way, Miami. The cruise will stop in Nassau, Bahamas. Cabins start at $699 per person. Visit matchboxtwentycruise.com .

Rockers Matchbox Twenty are setting sail on the high seas for their first ever concert cruise.

The Bent hitmakers, fronted by Rob Thomas, are inviting fans to join them onboard the Carnival Imagination ship this December (13), when they will travel from Miami, Florida to Nassau in the Bahamas.

The Matchbox Twenty Cruise, chartered by Rose Tours, will include a number of intimate performances by the band, in addition to special question and answer sessions, photo opportunities and parties where fans can mingle with the stars.

Rose Tours is the same company behind similar high seas adventures hosted by the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block.

Rob Thomas Reveals Sailing Phobias Ahead of Matchbox Twenty Cruise

This year hasn't been good for the cruise ship business—two words: sh-t cruise . But Matchbox Twenty is pushing ahead with their three-day Sail the Seas With Matchbox Twenty voyage in December, and frontman Rob Thomas is planning ahead.

"I was pretty scared of luxury liners on vacation," the Grammy winner admits of a recent trip. "As soon as it left port, I would start having a panic attack."

The singer adds, "You start seeing [news] about ships turning upside down, the bathroom's not working. We're just trying to figure out an escape clause. If something happens, I'm not going to be rude, but screw everyone else on that boat. I'm getting a helicopter, getting out of there and we're going to move on with our lives. We'll send them well wishes... as we're driving away."

Watch the full interview above for more on the cruise. Plus, don't miss Thomas reminiscing about his hit  Santana collabo "Smooth" right here .

Back in 2013 I was on the Carnival Imagination for the Matchbox Twenty cruise.  I doubt another cruise will ever beat that experience, but it didn’t have any of the typical Carnival activities.  My daughter (20) and I are now booked on the Celebration for a cruise in June and I have lots of questions.  All my other cruises have been on Royal Caribbean so I want to make sure I am as prepared as possible.

  • We have Your Time Dining.  Can we make an exact time booking online?  Or do we wait until we board or is it just go anytime and hope it’s not too busy?
  • Is it cheaper to buy massages pre cruise or once we get onboard?
  • We have never been to Amber Cove or Grand Turk.  Any recommendations for people that don’t really drink?
  • When can we buy tickets for the roller coaster on board?
  • How difficult is it to buy a cabana for a day on the Celebration?  I know they are offered to certain suite guests first.  Will they go on sale on line, or do we wait until we board?
  • Royal has “The Key”, does Carnival have anything similar that makes boarding, departure, etc easier for those not in suites?

Thanks in advance for your help and I’m sure I’ll have more questions along the way!

  • We have Your   Time Dining.  Can we make an exact time booking online?  Or do we wait until we board or is it just go anytime and hope it’s not too busy?
  • ~ Carnival has an onboard APP ( Hub App) , you check in when you’re ready and it tells you when your table is ready. You can’t pick a specific time with YTD.
  • ~ Watch your booking page and emails, sometimes there are discounts. Not sure otherwise.
  • We have never been to Amber Cove or Grand Turk.  Any recommendations for people that don’t really drink?
  • ~ These are free pool and beach days right at the port. Shopping, food is extra but the pool at Amber Cove and the beach are free.
  • ~ Again, the APP lets you check in for the coaster.
  • ~ Sorry,  not sure on this one.
  • ~ Carnival sometimes  sells Faster to the Fun, you check under excursions for boarding day. It allows a faster boarding.

Have fun !! We loved Celebration ! Did a B2B recently !

Like

your time dinning reservations can only be made onboard the ship using the hub app or going to the restaurant

roller coaster tickets can only be made onboard the ship using the hub app

carnival does their own version of the key called faster to the fun that has priority boarding/debarkation . there is no included wifi/specially lunch like royal

kwokpot

Faster to Fun is Carnival's version of the Key.

With Your Time Dining you cannot make advanced, whole cruise reservations. You can only make same evening reservations when the dining room is open by using the app. It will give you an estimated wait time, for example, about 20-30 mins wait or 40-50 minutes wait. You can then decide if you want to put in your reservation at that point or wait until later. On Dressup night it's ALWAYS a longer wait. The good thing is you can use the app anywhere you are, and then wait anywhere until the app notifies you that your table is ready.

I love how anytime dining works on carnival (vs how it is terrible on royal).

I just pressed the button I wanted a table. Even when it said 20  minutes wait, it was 5 minutes or less. I couldnr press it in my cabin and get there before it went off every time. Carnival does a lot more anytime dining vs royal who needs to take lessons from carnival.. I say this as a D+ on royal.

For brunch on sea days I usually click shared table. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click you want to share a table. Then press go. For dinner shared rarely works, just prepare to sit with your husband wife or whomever . . For during the day its a fast way to be seated with people to meet.

I love it on carnival. Hate it on royal. Prepare to like it.

FFTF faster to the fun can be purchased  if you want to board sooner,  no biggie to me.

I love Your Time Dining on Carnival compared to Royal. You just have to go on the Hub app and put in that you're ready to eat. It'll let you know how long you have to wait, but you can wait anywhere. Elegant night is busy, but again, you can wait anywhere. When I found out what Royal did for Anytime dining I made sure we had early dining since I didn't want to have to try to make reservations ahead of time.

Sometimes they have specials in the spa on the first day, but you will probably get some sort of deal in your email before that.

We rented a golf cart in Grand Turk and just buzzed around the island and saw some Donkeys and such. Amber Cove there's a pool right by the port, but we did get an excursion so we could go to the Amber museum. We don't drink much either, but I did get a bunch of hot chocolate to bring home.

Bolt can be reserved once on board on the Hub app

The cabanas should be able to book ahead of time-they were when we went on Mardi Gras, but i don't remember much about them since we weren't interested.

Faster to the Fun is like the key with getting on and off of the ship, but no special lunch or wifi or anything like that,

Enjoy! I haven't been on Celebration, but LOVED Mardi Gras!

Be aware that there is a large meandering pool at Amber Cove, but no beach at the port area. Grand Turk has beach and the Margaritaville pool.

Forgive me, but I have questions on your Matchbox Twenty cruise.  How many times did they perform?  Did they perform anywhere besides the main theater?  Were there any other bands or artists besides them?  Do you remember the group that chartered the cruise (I'm assuming it's not one of those Carnival LIVE! concert experience they used to have several years ago)?  TIA!

In exchange, I'll answer some of your questions.

  • As others have mentioned, just check in on the app when you're ready and eventually you'll get a table.  In the past, it was even easier (IMHO) - just go to the dining room when you're ready and eventually you'll get seated.  No app necessary then.
  • Amber Cove is on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, which is an interesting place to be (IMHO).  Check the excursion list for a list of interesting places to go.  I thought the dock area was interesting to explore for an hour or two.  My first and only visit here was about two years ago.  It wasn't on a Carnival cruise.

IMG_20211201_090742.thumb.jpg.16ebcde624b66beb2791bc88c742883b.jpg

  • Grand Turk isn't much more than a beach and water sports stop, but at least it has a dock.  It's pretty if you like that.
  • Royal totally stole FTTF from Carnival and called it "The Key"

Enjoy your cruise!

The MB20 cruise was organized by Rose Tours.  The Goo Goo Dolls was also on board with them.  The passengers were divided into two groups when we checked in, an A group and a B group.  Since the main theatre was not large enough for everyone, both bands played 4 times in the theatre, twice to each group.  Matchbox also did a Q&A on the Lido Deck along with another show for all the passengers.  It was the best 3 days ever and we made lifelong friends.  My daughter ended up on stage with Paul Doucette multiple times and went home with his guitar.  Still seems like a dream and wish they would do it again.

Thanks

If you’re looking to save money and have good massages your best bet is to look online for reviews of smaller local spas in ports you are visiting. Nothing like a beach massage or jungle spa treatment for less than $100 while on vacation.

Wow!  That does sound like a fun time!  Thanks for sharing.  I've done several charter cruises with lots of music, but none with a clear headliner like this one.

The cabanas will be available to book for the week for everyone about 4 weeks prior to the cruise.  For just a day, you have to do that onboard and hope they aren’t sold out.  I’m told during busy times like summer and spring break, they typically sell out.

And when the app matches you with a table number you dont even have to be watching. The carnival ship horn goes off and when you open it up confetti is dropping. It's a loud ships horn sound.. you KNOW when you match. Much better than standing in line on royal.

And dont forget to look for that button to share a table lower down .. I use it for brunch for fast seating.

Tell me more.  We will be in Grand Turk, Amber Cove & Nassau.  Ideas or recommendations?  I have seen them on some beaches, but nobody wants to see me getting a massage on the beach.  People may think they need to come help roll the whale back into the water.  However, a private couples massage that does not break the bank sound intriguing.

Haha

Good luck with roller coaster its been down for 3 weeks...irritated me we couldn't ride..

Amber cove is just a massive pool area. It's awesome..no massages there.

The ship is so close to the port id.schedule a port day massage..

You can do both and save money on the port day message

I dont know specifics for your ports.  Every port is different.  I usually look on Yelp or TripAdvisor for spa recommendations

What hasn't been mentioned that's very important to know is the potential places to eat dinner when you have Your Time Dining on Excel-Class ships. So here you go.

On the Celebration when you choose Your Time Dining you will have several places that you can have dinner. The MDR, Cucina Del Capitano Specialty Restaurant, and ChiBang Specialty Restaurant, and Guy's Pig and Anchor Smokehouse Specialty Restaurant. I call the three listed restaurants Specialty Lite Restaurants to differentiate them from the Steakhouse, Rudi's, Bonsai, and Emeril's. To make matter more confusing you are allowed one free dinner visit per cruise at Chibang and Cucina. Any additional dinners at either place will cost you an $8/pp cover charge. Pig and Anchor is unlimited visits with no Cover and no reservations are taken, it's first come first serve, so you don't use the app and just go to the restaurant desk.

Cucina is Italian but on the Excel Class ships it's a different menu from the rest of the Carnival fleet, so if you're doing your online research only look at reviews from the Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee.

Chibang is a combo Asian and Mexican. Funny thing is there are NO fusion dishes;there's Asian dishes and then there are Mexican dishes.

The three specialty Lite restaurants are open for lunch and are complementary, and opening hours vary.

matchbox 20 cruise

Last night in Pennsylvania, iconic alt-rockers Matchbox Twenty finally took the stage at the Wind Creek Event Center. The band’s current tour has been three years in the making. The run, originally slated for the summer of 2020, has finally come to fruition. While “Matchbox Twenty’s 2020 Tour” had a sweet ring to it, sadly it wasn’t meant to be. Now, the band is finally on the road giving it everything they’ve got for the fans who have literally been holding on to their tickets for years.

The band took the stage and kicked things off with “Friends,” the opening track from their latest album, Where the Light Goes . The album came out back in May, but it probably would have never been made had their tour not been delayed for three years. Starting off with the track seemed more poetic when you heard frontman Rob Thomas sing, “Hey, all my friends, all my friends are here, singing it out.”

And sing they did, for the next twenty songs.

“How Far We’ve Come” followed, continuing the metaphors. “I believe the world is burning to the ground / Oh well I guess we’re gonna find out / Let’s see how far we’ve come,” Thomas sang. Indeed, the world did seem to be burning a bit back in 2020, but we’ve come a long way since then, baby, and Matchbox Twenty are back on the road behind a record that was never intended to be made.

The threw is all the way back to the beginning on the third song with “Real World.” One of several smash hit singles from the band’s watershed diamond-selling debut album, it was met with an explosion of cheers from the crowd when the opening notes hit their ears. Kyle Cook’s melancholy riff could very well have a place on the Mount Rushmore of 90s alternative rock, and hearing it come through the speakers last night brought us all right back to 1996.

Throughout the set, the band left no stone unturned. They pulled multiple songs off each one of their studio releases, putting together a hefty 21-song setlist that fully encapsulated their storied career. They didn’t ignore their new record. In fact, they pushed it, playing four songs from the LP. “Wild Dogs (Running In a Slow Dream)” is a sweet slice of nostalgia that serves as a still frame of where the band is right now. Previous gems like “Disease,” “If You’re Gone,” “Mad Season,” “Bent,” and “Back 2 Good,” among others, resonated tremendously. At times, the crowd nearly drowned out Rob Thomas’s distinct vocals. He didn’t seem to mind too much.

They wrapped things up with the all-new “Rebels,” from their latest effort.

With the crowd needing just a little bit more, the band returned to the stage to give them a whole lot more. They kicked off their four-song encore with “3AM.” The crowd erupted with the first few strums of the song’s opening chords. “Unwell” and “Push” followed. They finally finished up with the tear-jerking anthem, “Bright Lights,” from their GRAMMY®-nominated 2002 album More Than You Think You Are . One line from the track stands out: “There’s some things you don’t need until they leave you / They’re the things that you miss.” It’s so good to have Matchbox Twenty back in our lives. Their songs are part of the soundtrack of an era that’s fleeting a bit. Hopefully, though, they aren’t going to leave us again any time soon.

Concert cruises where you can mingle with rock stars

From Kiss to Kid Rock, Matchbox Twenty to Weezer (and many more in between), chances are that one of the coming year’s concert-themed cruises will really float your boat. With several concert cruise promoters in tune with the wants of rock ‘n’ roll fans, cruise-goers can now listen to chart-topping bands while charting the seas.

Best of all, with rates as low as $500, some of these cruise getaways are priced for a song. Bookings as far out as April 2014 are available.

The Kiss Kruise III Dates: Oct. 28-Nov. 1, 2013 Rates: From $1,000/person

Sailing a four-night route ( Miami to Key West to the Bahamas ) aboard the Norwegian Pearl , The Kiss Kruise III comes headlined by Kiss for a fitting Halloween cruise with one of rock ‘n’ roll’s best-costumed bands. From their full-blown concerts to “un-masked” acoustic deck shows to band-hosted onboard activities and group Q&A sessions, you’ll get plenty of face time with Kiss themselves. Plus, expect quirky extras like a Kiss-themed vow renewal ceremony and theme nights (like a BYOW—bring-your-own-wig—party), all capped off by a Kiss look-a-like costume contest on Halloween night. The event is put on by concert cruise promoted Sixthman.

Rombello Dates: Nov. 1-5, 2013 Rates: From $500/person

Another Sixthman-run, Norwegian Pearl 4-nighter from Miami, the Rombello music festival at sea is slated to feature a host of live bands, including Michael Franti & Spearhead, G. Love & Special Sauce, State Radio, and more. Rockin’ onboard activities will include games like a live-music-led game of “boozical chairs” (booze-fueled musical chairs), and activities like a “silent disco,” where club-goers groove to the beat with headphones.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man Cruise Dates: Oct. 20-24, 2013 Rates: From $700/person

Set sail from Miami this fall for a four-night sailing helmed by rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Pearl . In between sets—including performances by Skynyrd and accompanying acts such as Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, Los Lonely Boys, and more —enjoy port calls in Key West, Fla., and Great Stirrup Cay (the cruise line’s private isle), in the Bahamas.

Matchbox Twenty Cruise Dates: Dec. 6-9, 2013 Rates: From $849/person

A three-night cruise to Nassau , Bahamas, from Miami, aboard the 2,056-passenger Carnival Imagination , cruise-goers on this December sailing (operated by Rose Tours) can count the rockers behind Matchbox Twenty and the Goo Goo Dolls among their cabin-mates. The Weezer Cruise Dates: Feb. 13-17, 2014 Rates: From $899/person

Cruise aboard the 2,056-passenger Carnival Fascination for a four-night festival-style sailing (chartered by Rose Tours over Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day weekend) from Jacksonville to the Bahamas (at Freeport and Nassau), and be joined by rockers like Weezer, Cat Power, Toro Y Moi, The Cribs, and more. Expect plenty of onboard concerts (plus a private beach concert), and other opportunities to mingle with the musicians with Q&A sessions, interactive game shows, artist-led events (yoga, karaoke, and more), photo ops, and more.

Concerts at Sea Rock n Roll Cruise Dates: Jan. 18-25, 2014 Rates: From $1,199/person

This classic rock cruise (run by Excellence in Travel) sails aboard the 3,080-passenger Caribbean Princess , with 2014 headliners set to include Paul Revere and The Raiders, The Cowsills, BJ Thomas, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, and Charlie Thomas’ Drifters. Concerts will be paired with meet-and-greets, Q&A and autograph sessions, hosted cocktail parties, a sock hop dance, and more. The seven-night Caribbean sailing embarks from Houston , with stops in Cozumel, Mexico ; Belize City, Belize ; and Roatán, Honduras .

The Rock Boat XIV Dates: Feb. 22-26, 2014 Rates: From $650/person

Running Sixthman’s Norwegian Pearl regular four-night route from Miami, this year’s rendition of “The Rock Boat”—dubbed a “summer camp for adults”—will feature performers like Sister Hazel, Collective Soul, Alternate Routes, Bronze Radio Return, and more. Gearing up to deliver non-stop music at sea, plus a private beach party with even more live tunes ashore, cruise-goers are guaranteed maximized music for their money.

The Monsters of Rock Cruise Dates: March 29-April 2, 2014 Rates: From $1,099/person

Sail aboard the 3,502-passenger MSC Divina from Miami to the Bahamas for four nights of hard rock on the high seas, brought to you by On the Blue. Headliners include a bevy of hard rock and heavy metal bands from the ‘80s and beyond, including Tesla, Ratt, Cinderella, Slaughter, and many more. Stop off for port calls in Nassau, as well as “Monster Island,” a private Bahamian island getting a “monsters of rock” makeover just for the occasion, plus expect plenty of action onboard, anchored on what’s being billed as the world’s largest cruise ship pool stage.

Kid Rock’s 5th Annual Chillin’ the Most Cruise Dates: March 3-7, 2014 Rates: Sold out; waiting list only

Also on Sixthman’s Norwegian Pearl circuit from Miami to Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, this March marks the fifth annual Kid Rock concert at sea. In addition to rockin’ onboard concerts, the private island will be transformed into a “Redneck Paradise” just for the occasion, complete with a beer-and-bikinis-fueled beach party. Kid Rock’s personally vetted lineup is soon to be announced.

Cruise to the Edge Dates: April 7-12, 2014 Rates: TBA

Also aboard the MSC Divina , this five-night sailing takes off from Miami, stopping at Roatán, Honduras, and Cozumel, Mexico. Details and pricing from promoter On the Blue are still pending, but the lineup of veteran rockers has been announced, with acts like Yes, Steve Hackett, Queensryche, and more on the roster.
