How to Plan a Mix and Match Travel Capsule

mix in travel

I thought I’d break down the process of creating a mix and match travel capsule into simple steps you can follow. While the steps are simple, the post is a little long so bookmark it if you have to or download it along with bonus content (that includes some killer worksheets by the way) because I didn’t want to make this post any epically longer than it was already.

But stick with me and hopefully I will take the overwhelm out of this process a little more so that you can confidently pack your carry-on capsule and be a packing light guru yourself one day.

One of the keys to packing light is indeed the mix and match travel wardrobe. It does take a wee, little bit of planning but it does not have to be an overwhelming process. You can approach it in two ways: use a list (or worksheet, like the one I’ve provided) or lay your clothes out or both, whatever works for you. Let’s break it down.

mixandmatchbutton

Step 1 – Check the Weather

The first steps in planning your carry-on travel wardrobe is to write down or at least be familiar with the weather conditions you are packing for. Google it, look in a Farmer’s Almanac, ask a friend – whatever you gots to do, just find out what the weather is like at your destination.

Specifically, be aware of the range of temperatures you should be expecting. For instance, the highs may be comfortable but the morning/evening lows may require outerwear or warm layers. Also check for rain conditions. This is key, so don’t skip this step!

Step 2 – Check your Itinerary

Next, take a look at your itinerary and write down your major travel activities. If you aren’t sure of your activities, no worries.

Just try and generalize what you’ll most likely be doing and estimate how much time you’ll spend doing each activity. So typically you’ll be sightseeing, going out to dinner, beachtime – whatever it may be that you will most likely be doing, write this down.

When you write down your activities, estimate how many outfits you might need for each. For instance, if you’ve got a few nice dinners scheduled during a 7 day trip that may require 2 outfits (or one outfit worn multiple times). Let’s say for this same 7 day trip you’ll also be sightseeing most days then you’ll need enough mix and match items to come up with 7 outfits for your 7 days of sightseeing.

This is not the time to speculate or dream about what you’ll be doing like having dinner with Beyonce or the queen of something or attending the opera or whatever fancy scenario you can come up with. For me, it’s thinking that I will actually work out and run on vacation. I bring my workout gear and shoes and NEVER touch them. So once again, just be honest and very realistic about what you’ll be doing during your trip.

If you have a special occasion or specific travel activity that requires particular clothing lay that out or list it first. This is what I call your non-negotiables . If you’re traveling for a wedding, jeans and flats won’t do, you’ll need to pack whatever is appropriate for that event.

Or if you’ve got some serious hikes planned for your trip, the right shoes are key to prevent yourself from being injured. So take note, of whatever specific, non-negotiable clothing needs you may have for your trip and list them or lay them out.

Step 3 – Build your Core Capsule

One way to put together your travel capsule is to start with a foundation of basics and build from there. I call this foundation of travel basics your “Core Capsule” and it should be around 8 items. You can either lay out or list your items during this process. And, don’t worry you will be adding to the Core Capsule in the next step.

Neutral Base Core Capsule Now, I could get very deep on the color wheel and color theory when picking out color palettes for your travel capsule. BUT, the packing process can be difficult enough as it is and honestly adding a color palette component can just make it all too overwhelming.

Unless you’re an art major, you really don’t have to know the difference between complementary and tertiary colors, mmkay. If your closet is anything like mine it’s a complete mish-mosh of patterns and colors. So , I recommend you build your Core Capsule on a base of neutral colored clothing or as close to neutral as possible.

You will be adding more items to your core capsule (don’t worry) and that’s when you can mix in different colors and patterns. If you love color and matching and your closet already has an existing color palette then by all means build your Core Capsule around the palette of your choice. If you are looking for some color palette inspo, check out The Vivienne Files for outfits curated with specific color palettes. For this particular example we will stick to a “core capsule” consisting of neutrals and/or basics you have.

Color Selection The only thing you do have to think about when it comes to color is to be aware of what types of colors are appropriate for your destination. Bright hues might not be the best to pack for your European vacation but they are totally right for more tropical locations. So just do a bit of research about the types of clothing and colors that are suitable for your destination.

Choose Versatile Items When choosing and editing your options you just want to make sure that clothing can be worn with at least 2-3 other items. Don’t stress about this too much and don’t get too tripped up in the travel outfit math. Yes, it would be amazing to make 97 outfits of just 12 items but most of us aren’t traveling for 97 days.

Focus on getting the most use out of your items but don’t let this be a stumbling block. But, yes the more items that match the better your travel capsule will work for you. The longer the trip, the more necessary it is for all of your clothing items to mix and match, unless you are ok with wearing just a few outfit combinations.

Do not pack “one use” items that can only be worn one way unless it’s for a specific travel activity in your travel itinerary. For example, a dressy dress to attend a wedding is completely acceptable. However, don’t pack that same dressy dress if it’s not for a specific event and when another combination of versatile clothing can perform the same function.

Don’t pack any “Just in Case Items” Avoid packing for those “just in case” situations. That will lead to overpacking every single time. Pack only for the weather, your travel activities and your destination. Boom! That’s it. Keep it simple!

A few reminders about the best types of clothes for packing light:

  • Pack Lightweight knits
  • Avoid bulky materials
  • Think in layers and choose items that are “layerable”
  • Flattering clothing you like to wear and feel comfortable in
  • Clothes that fit in with your destination
  • Remember to think “versatile” when choosing items

Let’s start with general clothing categories. You can adjust these categories to suit your wardrobe and travel needs.

Outerwear Even if you are traveling in the summer you may want to pack a light jacket for cool nights. Look at the weather conditions and pick out outerwear that works best for the predicted conditions.

Remember to always wear your bulkiest items in transit. Pack rain gear if it’s appropriate for your destination.

Try and get the most versatile outerwear possible. Sometimes you will have to pack more than one kind of outerwear depending on the type of trip you take and the weather conditions. If you are doing long term travel or traveling through multiple climates you will most likely have to pack more than one type of outerwear.

Prioritize functionality first when selecting outerwear. Sometimes when planning my own travel capsules I account for a functional piece of outerwear along with a more fashionable option. Just determine your outerwear needs according to your trip. By wearing your bulky outerwear in transit you save room in your carry-on suitcase.

My functional piece is generally the Patagonia Nano-Puff and it’s successfully seen me through a number of adverse weather conditions. Best of all, it weighs only 10.5 ounces and it’s so compact and compressible I can literally stuff it in my purse if I’m not using it. I have it in the black color so even in travel situations when it’s my only piece of outerwear it blends in well with the rest of my travel clothes.

Mid-layers Choose a lightweight sweater, either a pullover or cardigan style. Cardigans are versatile items because you can easily slip them on and off to deal with changing temperatures. Sweaters made of lightweight merino wool aren’t bulky and they are highly insulating. However, in colder weather pullovers do a better job at keeping you warm.

When choosing a mid-layer, check that the color complements with whatever outerwear you’ve selected. Read my Guide to Cold Weather Layering here for more on how to pack for colder climates.

Bottoms This can range from jeans to trousers to skirts to shorts. Choose 2 options that fit in with your personal style or preference and of course whatever suits the weather and travel activities. It’s crucial that whatever bottoms you select match all (or most) of your tops and your outerwear.

Try and keep bottom silhouettes similar because it’s easier to match with the same footwear. For instance the shoes that work with a wide leg pant may not work for a skinny jean and vice versa. Shoes that work with shorts may not work with jeans. So keep silhouettes in mind and how they will pair up with your travel shoes.

If you will be packing mostly dresses use this category and the tops category to list out your travel dress options.

Tops Choose whatever tops you find comfortable and that fit in with packing light guidelines above. Pick out up to 4 options that are appropriate for the range of weather conditions of your trip and that can be layered under sweaters easily.

Also look at your travel activities and weather when making your selections. I like to pack 2 lightweight tees (long and/or short sleeve), 1 button down and a blouse. When laying them out or listing them make sure that they complement or match your mid-layer, outerwear and bottoms.

Shoes This is the hardest category, I know! Read my post on How to Pick the best Travel Shoes for more tips on choosing what I like to call the Travelista Trio of shoes. Keep your travel activities in mind and you’ll want to pack at least one comfortable pair for walking.

Remember wear a pair and pack the other two. And don’t hate me too much for suggesting you bring no more than 3 pairs of shoes! It can be done and this will most definitely make you a packing ninja!

Step 4 – Add in your “A la Carte items” Or “Mini-capsules”

Ok, so now that you have your core capsule you can round it out. Add items that will keep your outfits interesting and increase your options. I call these “ A la Carte ” items. Some items you may want to add at this point are some statement pieces or strategic colors and patterns. Remember whatever you add still has to match multiple items and be worn multiple ways. Add clothing like blazers, a second lightweight outerwear option, cardigans and dresses or an extra pair of pants or a skirt.

Or, you can add a “mini-capsule”. Let’s say you are planning on going for hikes or to the beach, pack items for those portions of your trip if you haven’t already. Don’t go crazy here, you want to aim for a “ Travelista 12 ” and keep the capsule at 12 items ideally, 15 items maximum (for trips over 15 days). If you have a specific event or clothing need during your trip that’s not included in your core capsule now is the time to add it.

Now that you have most of your travel outfits established you can add in a few key accessories. A scarf is essential so pick one that complements your carry-on capsule. The same goes for jewelry. Keep it minimal and don’t get carried away with too many accessories. One to three scarves should be plenty, pack a warm one in colder weather. Keep jewelry simple during the day and pack a statement piece for evening. The same goes for handbags. Pack a minimal and functional purse for day and pack a small clutch for evening.

Step 5 – Try Everything on!

Trying clothes on can be time consuming but it’s an important step to make sure your travel capsule will actually work for you. Try on potential outfits for your most common travel activities.

When trying clothes on aim to pick outfits that are comfortable and flattering. You’ll also want to check that items can be layered easily. You don’t have to try on every potential combination because if you’ve planned correctly you’ll end up with dozens and dozens of options (Yay!).

Take pictures on your phone or notes to remind yourself of your favorite travel outfit combos. Also note what you’ll wear during rainy or any other inclement weather if it’s expected during your trip. This would be a good time to choose your airplane outfit as well. Choose something comfortable and always try and wear your bulkiest layers in transit.

Step 6 – Edit

If at any point during or after this process a clothing item or outfit feels a little “meh” and you don’t love it- don’t pack it ! Replace it with clothing you do love or don’t pack it at all. If you’re not loving it at home your feelings won’t change while you’re on your trip. Only pack what you love and feel fabulous in. Especially for longer trips, you really want to love every item in your suitcase.

Some clothes just don’t layer well and that’s ok but only for shorter length trips. If some are in your travel wardrobe just know their limitations and that it will reduce the amount of outfits you can put together. If you’re traveling for an extended period of time then you’ll want to find something more versatile.

Step 7 – Shop if you have to

Sometimes when assembling your travel wardrobe you may find you just don’t have the right pieces to build a whole travel capsule around. This is understandable, because unless you have a wardrobe capsule in everyday life, most of us don’t shop with the idea of capsules in mind. I myself haven’t committed to a capsule wardrobe lifestyle yet but if you are interested, blogs like Un-fancy are the place to start.

Try and make due with whatever is currently in your closet, if you do have to shop only buy the essentials. One or two classic pieces can bring your travel wardrobe to life. Invest in a well-fitting pair of jeans or trousers or a skirt or leather jacket, whatever the wardrobe workhorse is for you.

Your bottom pieces will get the most wear, so if you’re starting with a high quality piece then you can get away with inexpensive tops. Another good buy is a versatile day to night dress if you are a dress person. You can easily change the look of a dress with outerwear, cardigans and a change of shoes. Other worthy travel investments are stylish and functional outerwear and comfortable yet cute travel shoes.

If budget is an issue, stores like Target, Old Navy, H&M, Nordstrom Rack and Gap usually have a great selection of classic and on-trend pieces that are affordable. Ebay and consignment stores are other budget-friendly resource for finding high quality basics.

Do not be tempted to buy items that are so outside your comfort zone that you wouldn’t wear them in real, everyday life. Stick to your own personal style preferences. Maybe upgrade styles and silhouettes but be true to your own style and what makes you feel beautiful!

Step 8 – Pack Sleepwear, etc.

Once you’ve picked out your carry-on capsule. Don’t forget to pack or list your sleepwear and underwear and socks. Pack a few pairs of underwear and plan to hand wash them depending on the length of your trip. Check out my post on How to do Travel Laundry here .

Step 9 – Make a checklist and Stick to it!

After you’ve done all the planning of your amazing carry-on travel capsule, add the clothing items to your travel checklist. If you’ve got time before your trip you can make adjustments to your list and replace items but don’t be tempted to throw in extras. Stick to your list! Don’t panic and add in extras at the last minute!

If your goal is to pack light in a carry-on then trust in your planned carry-on capsule wardrobe of 12-15 clothing items and 3 pairs of shoes. You can do it!!

If you need extra help, grab my worksheets to help you figure out different outfit options for each item of clothing you pack (you can print as many copies of the worksheet as necessary to help you figure out potential travel outfit options). The worksheet even comes with space to list out your final mix and match travel capsule.

Step 10 – Evaluate What worked

After your trip, take a few minutes to note what worked best and what didn’t in your travel capsule. By noting items that didn’t work or didn’t get used you can be more efficient with your next mix and match travel capsule. These notes will help you pack better the next time you travel and before you know it you will be a total packing ninja, hollah! So hold on to these precious notes in an app like Evernote or something similar where you can easily refer to them for your next trip.

I hope this helps you begin your packing process so you don’t leave it until the last minute. Just a little advanced planning can make you a better, savvier, lighter traveler. And, who doesn’t want that?!

Lady Light Travel

I loved your post. It looks like we have very similar philosophies on travel wardrobe building. I wrote a similar article in 2012 ( https://ladylighttravel.com/2012/05/13/how-to-plan-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe-for-vacation/ )

I need a lot of color in my wardrobe or I’ll get washed out. I would blend into the wall if I wore neutrals only! I’m also an emotional dresser so a wardrobe that gives me multiple outfit options is important.

Your capsules are always cute and powerful. Keep up the great work.

Thank so much! Color is good, some people get overwhelmed by it. I love neutrals and I add color in my accessories or in a few statement tops. I enjoy your site as well!!!

Hello, I will be traveling on a much longer trip to mexico for about four months and im not sure how to adjust your travel capsule idea for a longer trip. I will be there in the summer but I was told to beware that is only gets pretty cold and rains often in the area i will be staying. I also need to pack professional clothes for when i am volunteering as a teacher and comfotable clothes for when i am sightseeing/walking around the city. The plus to this being a long trip is that i will be able to buy most of my toiletries once I get to the destination so I will have a bit more room in the suitcade for the extra clothes. By the way we are told to bring two checked bags and one carry on and we are required to bring enough donated school supplies to fill the carry on bag for the school we are volunteering at! I appreciate all of your help so much! Thank!

Your packing list was pure inspiration, thank you so much. I travel a lot for work and I am already a very light packer in a regular carry-on. But on my next trip I’m going to Costa Rica for 10 days so i needed a couple more pieces for ziplining, waterfalls, dinners etc. In total I made 30 outfits from 14 pieces and added a swimsuit, underwear, shoes and toiletries. Everything fits in a small backpack so no airline baggage fees, #spiritsucks! but it’s cheap so you get what you pay for. Thanks again. Happy travels!

Travel Fashion Girl

Wow 🙂 30 outfits from 14 pieces is fantastic! Good Work! So glad you like the packing list 🙂 It sounds like it’s really working for you!

Love your blog and refer to it often when packing my carry on. Looking at this combination though, all these pieces will not fit as well as shown, cause they are altered in the pictures. White shirt is long then short…tucking it in will create inevitable bulkiness. White tank over black dress…the black top part will poke out in areas, unless perfectly matched. Plus the black dress is bloused in some pictures, and then fitted under the white tank. Using 4 pieces is not as easy as pictures, that have been altered. Inspirational though for those wanting to travel lighter. Please keep up the fantastic work, but please show us the real deal.

Matching sets are perhaps the greatest travel style hack: they’re a one-and-done way to look polished and pulled together without actually putting much effort into your outfit. Our favorite sets are as comfortable as they are stylish, and versatile enough to mix and match with most of what’s in our suitcase.

We researched the best matching sets that boast travel-friendly features, from soft elastic waistbands to hidden stash pockets, breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics, and more. Whether you’re looking for a silk set you can dress up for a night out or a stylish sweatsuit that can take you from the airport to yoga class, we’ve got something to suit every traveler’s personal style and budget.

Best Overall

Wayre button up crop and cruiser pant.

Both pieces are super easy to mix and match with other items in your existing travel wardrobe.

Both pieces are on the pricey end and are sold separately.

We’ve researched and tried out dozens of travel-friendly matching sets, and Wayre’s ultra-versatile pieces win out every time. The simple and flattering silhouettes are designed with minimalist packers in mind, ensuring every piece can be worn together or easily matched to anything else in your suitcase. Our go-to is the Button Up Crop and the Cruiser Pant , which are both crafted from the brand’s Like Silk fabric. The material is made up of post-consumer plastic bottles and recycled spandex, making it one of the most sustainable options out there — plus, it’s available in a wide range of sizes and eight shades, including a trendy gingham print. The buttons on the top are even biodegradable!

The top is essentially three shirts in one: wear it tucked and buttoned up for a more polished look, untucked for relaxed vibes, or show a little skin and tie up the front for a more playful look. Its versatility is only part of its appeal: the top boasts a secret stash pocket to protect your valuables, and both pieces are ideal for wearing repeatedly thanks to their antimicrobial, breathable, spill-resistant and wrinkle-proof fabric. The Like Silk material also boasts four-way stretch for full flexibility of movement, plus UPF 30 protection against the sun’s UV rays.

While you can mix and match this with any of Wayre’s bottoms, we love the Cruiser Pant, which boasts a comfy elastic waistband and adjustable drawstring for all-day comfort. It also features four pockets — two side pockets, as well as a hidden one and a secret zippered stash pocket to safely tuck away your wallet.

The Details: 2XS to 3XL | Post-consumer plastic bottles, recycled spandex

Best Budget

Anrabess two piece outfit sweater set.

The material is substantial yet breathable, and looks far more expensive than it is.

Over time, the stitching may need to be reinforced around the underarms and pockets.

This two-piece sweater set from Anrabess is an absolute steal for the price — we’d suggest even stocking up on multiple shades (there’s a veritable rainbow of 26 colors to choose from) in order to switch things up from the full monochrome look. The fit is slightly oversized and slouchy without feeling boxy, which makes it comfortable enough to wear on long-haul flights. We love wearing the pieces together with mules and a chic belt for a casual daytime look, or with sneakers while running errands. The top looks great partially tucked into the matching wide-legged pants or your favorite jeans and can also be worn untucked for a more relaxed look.

The Details: XS to 2XL | Rayon

Best Size-inclusive

Skims boyfriend crop tank.

This soft, roomy set is cozy enough to wear to sleep, but versatile enough to wear on travel days or while running errands.

It’s designed to run oversized — if you prefer a closer fit, size down.

Versatile loungewear always has a spot in our suitcase, and lately we’ve been obsessed with this oversized boyfriend set from Skims. The cropped tank and coordinating Boyfriend Loose Pant will work overtime for you: wear them as ultra-cozy pajamas or layer them on busy travel days when you need to look pulled together but don’t want to sacrifice comfort. The roomy tank and straight-leg, relaxed fit pants are crafted from a super soft and stretchy cotton-modal blend, infused with a touch of spandex to ensure full freedom of movement. We love that the set is available in a wide range of sizes, from 2XS to 4X, and comes in three matching shades.

The Details: 2XS to 4X | Cotton, modal, spandex

Best Shorts Set

Wayre shift & snap tank.

The silky smooth material is odor- and wrinkle-resistant, making it a breeze to pack.

Some people may prefer shorts with more coverage — in which case, the brand makes the same pair in a longer Bermuda style.

The perfect summer set doesn’t exi–. Much like our top pick, this set from Wayre is designed to be worn together or separately, and each piece can be paired with any of their other sets or the pieces in your suitcase. It’s made from their magical Like Silk fabric, which is a dream for travelers: it’s odor-resistant, making it easy to get more wear out of between washes, and it’s wrinkle-proof, so you can pack it with confidence.

The Flow Shorts are pleated and high-waisted, with a smooth front band and hidden elasticated backing that ensure they move with you throughout the day, whether you’re indulging in bowls of fresh pasta in Rome or pastries in Paris. Of course, they’re equipped with two side pockets — which zip closed to ward off pickpockets — and a sneaky internal passport compartment. Meanwhile, the breezy tank is a great wardrobe staple that’s made from the same soft performance material, and is versatile enough to pair with just about anything. Scoop it up in one of 11 shades, including charming ginghams, olive green, and ochre yellow.

The Details: 2XS to 3XL | Post-consumer recycled plastic, recycled spandex

Best Skirt Set

Reformation hays knit two piece.

Reformation

It’s made from sustainable materials including organic cotton and eco-friendly Tencel lyocell.

There aren’t any pockets on the skirt, and it needs to be hand washed.

Reformation makes it easy to shop sustainably with their eco-friendly knits, like this flattering skirt set. It’s crafted from an ultra-soft blend of Tencel lyocell and organic cotton, with a touch of spandex for added stretch. The two-piece is designed to be fitted throughout, with a cropped and sleeveless top and a matching column midi skirt — wear them together as a full set, or switch it up by pairing the top with slacks and the skirt with a cropped sweater.

We love that the simple silhouette is easy to dress up or down: you can wear it with knee-high boots for a night on the town, or with your favorite sneakers for a laidback daytime look. While we love how sleek the pieces are, we wish there were pockets for storing our essentials.

The Details: XS to XL | Tencel lyocell, organic cotton, spandex

Naadam Cashmere Hoodie

This luxuriously soft cashmere set is naturally breathable and temperature regulating — plus, it comes in a wide range of sizes.

The hoodie doesn’t have any pockets.

Elevate your loungewear look with this sumptuously soft cashmere set from Naadam. Whether you’re working from home, heading to the gym, or bundling up for a walk around town, this hoodie and jogger combo will take you there in maximal comfort. It’s crafted from 100 percent Mongolian cashmere, a naturally breathable and temperature-regulating fiber which we love for its heavenly soft handfeel.

The hoodie features an adjustable drawstring for a cozy fit, plus a versatile silhouette that’s easy to layer over your favorite top or under your go-to jacket on chilly days. The matching Off-Duty Cashmere Jogger is slim-fit with a drawstring waistband and side pockets, and Naadam lets you bundle the two for major savings. The set is available in 12 shades, from classic camel to limited-edition rust.

Lunya Washable Silk High Rise Pant Set

This darling silk pajama set is chic enough to wear out and about — plus, it’s machine washable.

Be sure to air dry this set, as it tends to shrink and fade in the dryer.

Lunya is an editor-loved brand that was at the forefront of the washable silk craze. This pants set is made from 100 percent mulberry silk, which is pre-washed with a sand wash in order to achieve a supple handfeel and to ensure that it’s machine washable. Silks usually need to be dry cleaned, so that’s a major draw with this set — you get all the soft and silky benefits with easy care convenience. Just be sure to lay it flat to dry, as the material is prone to shrinking and fading in the dryer.

While this is technically a pajama set — the high-rise pants boast side slits to offer added ventilation for hot sleepers — trust us when we say it’s chic enough to wear out and about, if you style it accordingly. The button-down top is breezy and breathable, making it a great piece to pair with your favorite shorts or jeans, while the pants, which feature a soft elastic waistband and side pockets, look gorgeous with a cropped sweater. We also love that the set is made with bluesign-approved dyes, which are safer for factory workers and the planet.

The Details: XS to XL | Mulberry silk

AYR The Pool Boy Linen

Both the shirt and pants boast functional pockets to conveniently store your small essentials.

Linen is prone to wrinkling, so you may want to pack a steamer or wrinkle-release spray to keep your pieces looking their best.

Is there anything chicer than a linen pantsuit? Whether you’re wandering through hillside towns in the South of France or touring temples in Bangkok, this easy, breezy set will keep you looking and feeling cool. It’s crafted from 100 percent Irish linen, which is soft (unlike some linen, which can be slightly scratchy) and allows for plenty of air flow.

We love that the pants boast an elastic waistband, so you’ll feel comfortable wearing them all day long — in warmer weather, we’d consider this a dreamy travel-day outfit, given how pulled together yet low-maintenance it is. Both the shirt and the matching Tourist Pant feature spacious pockets, where you can tuck your phone, keys, and other small essentials for easy access.

Our only gripe is that linen tends to wrinkle easily, so you’ll want to come prepared with a travel steamer or wrinkle-release spray.

The Details: XS to XL | Irish linen

Most Versatile

Reformation frances two piece.

Cozy and warm, this is luxuriously soft loungewear that’s designed with maximum comfort in mind.

It’s pricey.

Soft and silky, this minimalist two-piece set from Reformation is an elevated wardrobe staple for any fashionable traveler. It’s crafted from a fluid blend of viscose and rayon, which feels like silk but is more durable and breathable.

Wear this set together for a low-lift, one-and-done outfit that looks incredibly polished while requiring minimal effort. You can keep things casual with sneakers or ballet flats, or dress it up with a pair of strappy sandals and your favorite accessories. We love that the pieces are easy to pack and work great as separates, too — pair the cropped tank with any bottoms for a breezy look, and throw on the pants for long travel days or late nights on the town.

The Details: XS to XL | Viscose, rayon

Best Athleisure

Alo yoga muse hoodie.

The cropped, relaxed fit of this stylish sweatsuit is versatile enough to throw on after a workout or for running errands in maximal comfort.

It runs oversized — size down if you prefer a more fitted look.

Leave your ratty old sweatsuit at home — this best-selling duo from Alo Yoga is as fashionable as it is functional, and is designed to take you straight from coffee with friends to running errands around town or hitting the yoga studio for a flow session. The plush, lightweight material folds up into next to nothing in your suitcase to boot, offering you all the warmth and coziness of your favorite sweats without any of the traditional bulk.

The roomy, relaxed fit is flattering and of-the-moment, but consider sizing down if you prefer a closer fit. The matching Muse Sweatpant features a soft elastic waistband that never digs into skin, plus an adjustable drawstring to help find your perfect fit. While there’s no kangaroo pocket on the hoodie — which we appreciate, as the sleek silhouette makes it easier to mix and match with other items in our wardrobe — there are three pockets on the pants to stash your phone, wallet, and other belongings.

The Details: Top : XS to L, Bottoms: 2XS to L | Polyester, rayon, spandex

Best Pajamas

Eberjey gisele long pj set.

This temperature-regulating set is crafted from super-soft tencel modal that you’ll want to live in all year round.

The pants don’t have any pockets.

Whether you’re lounging around the house or dozing off for the night, there’s no dreamier set to cozy up in than the Eberjay Gisele Tencel Modal Long PJ Set. Crafted from buttery soft tencel modal and a touch of spandex for added stretch, they’re some of the most comfortable pajamas we’ve ever worn. We love the timeless men’s PJ silhouette and classic contrast piping, which gets a feminine touch thanks to the luxurious drape of the knit fabric.

The material, which is Oeko-Tex certified to be free of harmful substances, is also temperature regulating, so hot sleepers can luxuriate in their beauty sleep without worrying about sweating or overheating. Best of all, it’s machine washable, so you can toss it in the laundry for quick and convenient care. Scoop it up in one of nine vibrant hues, like classic black, a gorgeous light rose, or a soft sky blue. You can even monogram it for a personal touch, which also makes a thoughtful gift for yourself or a loved one.

The Details: XS to 2XL | Tencel modal, spandex

Best Thermal

Wheat denver thermal mock neck.

This luxuriously soft and lightweight thermal set will keep you warm without adding bulk to your bag.

The pants look more definitively like loungewear than the top, and may be too casual to wear out and about.

Minimalists will love this sleek and streamlined thermal set from Wheat, which is crafted from ultra-soft cotton and modal thermal with just the right amount of stretch. The mock neck top is a fantastically versatile addition to any traveler’s wardrobe, as it’s cozy enough to wear to lounge or sleep in, yet chic enough to throw on with jeans and heeled boots or sneakers for a comfortable, pulled-together day-to-night look.

While it’s available in four colors, including two trendy shades of blue, we’d opt for a neutral shade like black or white in order to maximize the number of outfits you could mix-and-match.  The top is designed with a relaxed silhouette and wide hem, while the matching Telluride Pant is body-skimming and flares out slightly at the ankle. Both pieces are lightweight and breathable, meaning they’ll take up minimal suitcase space and allow for plenty of air flow while keeping you warm and cozy. Best of all, the set is machine washable for easy care — it can even be tossed in the dryer on low heat.

The Details: XS to XL | Cotton, modal thermal

Tips for Buying Matching Sets for Women

Consider care instructions.

Low-maintenance clothing is key when traveling — no one wants to spend their vacation days at the laundromat, after all. Look for matching sets that are made from quick-drying and breathable fabrics, such as linen, which stays fresh for longer in between washes. It’s also best to prioritize pieces that are machine washable, as you can simply toss them in the laundry instead of tracking down (and shelling out for) a dry cleaner.

Prioritize versatility

Suitcase space is precious: it’s crucial to focus on packing versatile pieces that are easy to mix and match together, and which can be worn on a variety of occasions. Matching sets that can be worn together or paired individually with other pieces in your wardrobe are ideal, as you can maximize your outfit options while cutting down on the number of items you need to bring. Consider the shoes and accessories you’re bringing along as well, as you can create even more outfits simply by adding a belt or jewelry.

Matching sets are excellent and ultra-versatile options for light packers looking to maximize their travel wardrobe. They’re an easy, low-lift way to look polished without putting much fuss into your appearance — perfect for busy travel days when you’d like to look good while still feeling comfortable. In this list, we’ve rounded up sets that prioritize travel-friendly features, like plenty of pockets and breathable, wrinkle-resistant materials that are easy to care for.

Matching sets make it easy to style yourself, as you can wear them together for a cohesive outfit or switch it up by bringing your other pieces into the mix. It’s important to opt for a set that can also be styled separately — being able to mix and match with other pieces in your suitcase will minimize the amount of clothing you need to bring, while maximizing your outfit potential. Opting for a set in a neutral tone and versatile silhouette is also key, as that will ensure you’re best able to pair it down with your favorite jeans and sneakers or dress it up with heels and accessories.

Travelers’ Journey, Personas, and the 4Ps of Tourism Marketing Mix

Travel Addict Hack

Research has shown that the tourism sector will become increasingly hypercompetitive after the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, consistent promotion with a marketing mix is a realistic and fresh approach to achieve tourism goals.

Understanding audience personas and processes through their mindset is necessary, using a precise method that employs the concepts of attention, inspiration, desire, action, and loyalty. These personas and processes are essential for tourism and travel companies.

Only 27% of the companies in the tourism sector have documented their content strategy at every stage of the traveler’s journey. Thus, the “attention–inspire–desire–action–loyalty (A-I-D-A-L)” method may help inform your travel and tourism content planning with purpose and later promote your content on various channels and networks.

The top three advanced personas are enthusiasts, planners, and adventurers. These three personas (or imaginary individuals) correspond to the essential segments that we aim to attract, including luxury travel, leisure, and business travel . They will help us visualize the targeted travelers and develop brand messages and digital marketing tactics that will resonate with them.

How can you connect with enthusiasts? Enthusiasts are always open to destination discovery and exploration. They are thrill-seekers and want to get away from it all. To reach out to this cohort, you need to take the time to document your content by using the attention–inspire–desire–action–loyalty method.

You can enhance the awareness that an enthusiast has of your travel and tourism brand through all the types of content that you are producing. Create content based on their demographic profile to gain their interest in your tourism campaign. Appeal to them with vivid stories through your persuasive messaging, thereby motivating their purchase desire. Showcase your content on every digital platform so that they can take action and envision their vacation to a bespoke destination. Gain their loyalty by offering reward programs, travel passes, and memberships and, most importantly, by communicating with them regularly through email newsletters.

Enthusiasts may not have a particular destination in mind and could consider your expert suggestion.

Digital Marketing Mix to Engage Enthusiasts

  • SEO-based posts that inspire the discovery of new destinations, brands, and activities
  • Social media photos showcasing properties, suites, and adventure options
  • Branded PPC campaigns to increase demand around the destination or property

How can you connect with planners? Planners are always prepared for activities, and their travel experience begins online. They may create entire itineraries, find deals, and choose the package options to shop from based on their interests and comfort levels. Moreover, for planners, a similar A-I-D-A-L method would be used to document their content strategies.

Enhance planners’ awareness of your travel and tourism brand. Drill down content based on their demographic profile to gain their interest in your tourism campaign. Appeal to them with vivid stories through your drive, creating a desire in them to purchase your product. Use your most compelling content on every digital platform so that they can take action and envision their vacation to a bespoke destination. Obtain their loyalty by offering reward programs, travel passes, and memberships.

As a result, planners’ expectations will increase, and they will plan their trips from the outset.

Digital Marketing Mix to Engage Planners

  • Create “checklist posts” to help them prepare for a specific trip
  • Showcase advanced photographic ideas on social media channels to inspire them
  • Customize a campaign to show safety protocols and comfort levels to help them prepare in advance

How can you connect with adventurers? Adventurers have a powerful travel persona and can be great advocates of tourism and prolific sharers of knowledge. They have an overpowering lust for the outdoors and a burning desire for adventure travel. They always have a list of adventures to embark upon for their next trip. Further, for adventurers, a similar A-I-D-A-L method would be used to document their content strategies.

You can make adventurers aware of your travel and tourism brand. Produce content based on their demographic profile to pique their interest in your tourism campaign. Appeal to their purchase desire with vivid stories. Use your content on every digital platform so that they can take action and envision their vacation to a bespoke destination. Obtain their loyalty by offering reward programs, travel passes, and memberships and, most importantly, by communicating with them regularly through email newsletters.

Adventurers are in love with adventure travel. They chase it around the globe and plan on having a good time experiencing the best adventures on the planet.

Digital Marketing Mix to Engage Adventurers

  • SEO-based posts highlighting the best adventure destinations
  • Photo collateral in HD showcasing physical activities and adventure options on social media channels
  • Creative YouTube video ads with experiments and sequencing showcasing adventure moments

Use the 4Ps model in travel and tourism to connect with each individual The 4Ps in tourism are “product,” “price,” “place,” and “promotion.” They are intangible factors for enthusiasts, planners, and adventurers and are categorically streamlined as follows.

Product: Tourism involves components ranging from the niche to mass appeals, such as accommodation, food, beverages, transportation, scenic beauty, the historical significance of places, geographical state, and concerts like Coachella, Woodstock, and Sunburn. These attractions can appeal to travelers in each segment of the tourism market. However, the packaging of your offering is also essential, and every element is intangible and must heighten the tourist’s experience.

Price: Price is a significant factor in the 4Ps of travel and tourism. All tourism products are unique. The tourism business is seasonal in many countries. Thus, price setting based on market competition is a critical component of the experience that travelers require. Their expectations must be met irrespective of whether they are paying modest, standard, or expensive.

Place: Distribution in tourism is a tricky process, whether it takes place online or at shop fronts. Technology has played a pivotal role in the growth of the travel industry, especially with the COVID-19 situation, in terms of sustainability, design, and security.

The real value of innovative marketing is obtaining suitable packages at the right time in the right place. Thus, the location from where you conduct your travel and tourism business requires a proper evaluation. For example, consider your audience—are they offline or online shoppers? Therefore, research is the key to finding the correct place; consider your competitors’ actions in specific locations.

Promotion: In tourism, the promotional activity consists of inspiring, educating, persuading, and reminding the travelers about the brand or product. It refers to the marketing tactics employed to spread brand or product awareness. Various digital channels, including traditional, OTT, and CTV devices, are used in the tourism industry. The attention–inspire–desire–action–loyalty method will help you find your target audience and promotional strategy and campaigns. Different demographic segments may have varying responses to your marketing efforts. Therefore, consistent promotion must be realistic throughout the traveler’s journey.

These 4Ps can be mixed and merged beyond imagination in any marketing mix strategy.

This article presents a comprehensive overview of the types of audiences searching for travel and tourism information that can help you plan your campaign accordingly and promote it on various channels and networks.

Mastering Effortless Chic: Mix and Match Travel Outfits

Traveling not only opens doors to new experiences but also presents an opportunity to showcase your style in diverse settings. The art of packing for a trip involves more than just throwing clothes into a suitcase; it’s about creating a versatile, stylish wardrobe that can adapt to any adventure.

We designed this guide to help you effortlessly mix and match outfits, ensuring you look chic no matter where your journey takes you. We’ll go over how to select foundational pieces, add flair with statement items, and fine-tune your look with the perfect accessories and footwear, all while keeping your luggage light.

mix in travel

Understanding the Importance of Location

When planning your travel wardrobe, the first and perhaps most crucial factor to consider is your destination. The setting of your travels dramatically influences your clothing choices , dictating everything from the type of fabrics you should pack to the style of clothes that will be most appropriate.

For instance, if you’re frequenting beach vacation rentals , your suitcase might be filled with lightweight, breezy pieces perfect for the beach , such as linen shorts, airy blouses, and sundresses.

On the other hand, a trip to a cooler, mountainous location like Aspen would call for layers, knits, and more substantial footwear. This initial consideration sets the stage for the rest of your packing decisions, ensuring you are both comfortable and appropriately dressed, no matter where your travels take you.

In the case of a destination like Sunset Beach in North Carolina, the vibe is laid-back and casual. This beach town invites a relaxed dress code, where comfort is king.

Here, you might opt for loose-fitting clothes that allow for ease of movement and can transition from a day at the beach to a casual evening out. Think about pieces that can be layered or adjusted according to the coastal weather, which might include a light cardigan or a versatile shawl.

The key is to select items that are as functional as they are stylish, blending in with the local atmosphere while still making a personal style statement.

Incorporating Statement Pieces

When it comes to making a fashion statement, it’s all about adding personality to your look, and a satin long-sleeve dress is a perfect example. It’s elegant enough for a dinner at a high-end restaurant yet simple enough for a casual walk along the beach.

The important thing when it comes to a statement piece is to ensure it’s in harmony with the rest of your travel wardrobe, both in color and style. Incorporating such pieces wisely can transform even the most basic outfit into a head-turning ensemble. This way, it enhances your outfits without clashing.

Accessorizing Smartly

Accessories are the secret weapon of the savvy traveler. They can transform an outfit without taking up valuable suitcase space. Consider a silk scarf: it’s not just an accessory but a transformative piece, serving as a headband, a stylish neck accessory, or an elegant enhancement to your purse.

Moreover, a carefully selected hat serves the dual purpose of shielding you from the sun while injecting a dash of style into your ensemble. With thoughtful selection, accessories can offer a multitude of styling possibilities, enhancing the versatility of your travel wardrobe. Jewelry should be kept minimal – a pair of versatile earrings and a statement necklace can go a long way in elevating your travel ensembles.

Footwear for Every Occasion

Footwear plays a pivotal role in your travel enjoyment, where finding the perfect blend of fashion and function is key. Opt for a pair of cushioned sneakers , ideal for days packed with exploration and excitement. For evenings or more formal events, a pair of stylish flats or a modest heel can elevate your outfit while still being kind to your feet.

Choosing the right footwear can significantly impact your overall comfort and ability to enjoy various activities. Remember, the goal is to be prepared for various activities without overpacking.

Layering for Changing Weather

Did you know that the summer of 2023 was Earth’s hottest on record since global records began in 1880, with temperatures in June, July, and August being significantly warmer than historical averages? Dealing with changing weather is a common challenge while traveling. The solution is layering.

A lightweight, breathable jacket or a stylish cardigan can be invaluable. These pieces should be easy to carry around, so when the temperature drops or a cool breeze picks up, you’re ready. Layering also allows you to adapt to different indoor environments, from air-conditioned museums to cozy cafes.

Mix and Match your Color Palette

A cohesive color palette is crucial for a mix-and-match wardrobe. Stick to a base of neutrals – blacks, whites, grays, and tans – and add a few pieces in your favorite colors or prints. This approach ensures that every item you pack works together, giving you more outfit combinations with fewer pieces.

A well-thought-out color scheme not only streamlines your packing but also ensures you look put together no matter the combination. It also simplifies decision-making when you’re trying to enjoy your vacation rather than fret over what to wear.

Final Thoughts

mix in travel

Crafting a wardrobe that is both stylish and functional is an achievable endeavor. Concentrate on essential elements, and you’ll find yourself relishing your journeys in fashion. The objective is to dress in a way that boosts your confidence and comfort, allowing you to concentrate on creating lasting memories . Follow these guidelines, and you’re set for a journey of effortless sophistication.

It’s difficult to pack light and look good at the same time. That’s why it’s important to pack mix and match clothing that can be used over and over again to create new looks!

Table of Contents

Best Travel Clothes for Women

While the cost of excess baggage goes up, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to travel carry-on only.

There are many benefits to packing light  like not having to stand around waiting for your luggage to arrive when your plane lands, or not having to worry about lost luggage while in transit.

But how can you pack everything you need into one small rolling suitcase?

Well, the best way I’ve found to pack lighter is to mix and match my clothing.

So I’ve rounded up my best most versatile pieces of travel clothes for women that I’ve been wearing the past few months.

Best Mix and Match Travel Clothes

If you want to scale down your packing, think about items that have a duel purpose. I could easily go away for a week with just these items in my backpack and be prepared for most travel situations.

Sporty zip skort.

best travel clothes for women

I love the Sporty Zip Skort because I can go for a walk in the woods or a night on the town wearing this piece of clothing.

If I put on a pair of running shoes or water shoes I can go on a hike or I can dress it up with some strappy sandals and be dining out by candlelight in a fine restaurant.

It’s comfortable, quick dry and light meaning it won’t take up a lot of room in your suitcase.

Zip Pocket Jeggings

travel clothes for women leggings

They’re like tights, but thicker and more durable. You can wear Zip Pocket Jeggings as jeans on their own, or put a long shirt or dress overtop for a more elegant look.

This versatile piece of clothing is great for sightseeing at the Eiffel Tower or shopping at the market. I like wearing my jeggings on the plane.

Their so comfortable and soft, I can sleep like a baby, but still look great walking through the airport.

Classic Bermuda Shorts

travel clothes for women blouse

Perfect for a safari or a walk in the park. I love these Bermuda shorts   They are stretchy, comfortable and slimming.

I can dress these up or down. Little heals with a blouse and they look so cute. Hiking boots and a t-Shirt and I’m ready to hike.

These lightweight shorts are durable and easy to wash too.

Indispensable Skirt

travel clothes for women sunset

Since you have the skort already you don’t necessarily need this Indispensable Skirt in your travel bag, but I love it so much.

I wear it everywhere. When I go out for a night of high end dining or a romantic walk on the beach, this is the skirt for me.

I lounge in it, I live it. Hence the name Indispensable.

Watercolour Floral Tie

mix in travel

I use this top to dress up my skirts or leggings. I even wear it with shorts when I know I’ll be out for a day of sightseeing in museums or art galleries.

My watercolour floral tie front top dresses up any outfit, but is ultra light and so easy to clean.

Cap Sleeve Easy Tee

travel clothes for women horse

Every wardrobe needs a T-Shirt and I like the Cap Sleeve Easy Tee because if it’s worn with a pair of shorts, it looks sporty.

If I wear it with a skirt or my leggings, it dresses up. If I want to play some sports, go kayaking or just hang out, this easy tee is comfortable and looks great.

Everything I have in my suitcase can be worn for many different situations. I never have one item that can only be worn in one situation.

Voyager Shirt

mix in travel

I like trekking in long sleeves and when traveling to many parts of the world, it’s important to keep your shoulders covered, that’s why something like the Voyager Shirt is an excellent choice for travel.

Because it is lightweight, breathable and quick drying, it’s perfect for a mountain trek or jungle hike but it also looks great with a pair of jeans, or my jeggings for a night out

Ballet Flats

travel clothes for women lighthouse

The  Ballet flats  is a new addition to my travel bag and I love them. I like wearing them on the plane because they slip on and off easily making going through security a snap, but I can also wear them sightseeing.

Because of their non-slip soles, I wore them while exploring the rocks of Peggy’s Cove and felt very sure footed.

Zip off Trekking Pants

Pukaskwa National Park Ontario - hiking the coastal trail

Call me old fashioned, but because we do a lot of trekking and advneture travel, I still pack zip off trekking pants .

I use them as shorts a lot, but they can also be used for mountain treks, early morning hikes and cooler weather conditions.

Being lightweight and breathable, they pack easily and don’t take up a lot of weight. They are the most versitile piece of clothing I use.

how to tie a sarong

I use a Sarong a lot. When traveling, I can pretty much make my sarong anyting. In the Middle east I can use it as a head scarf, in South East Asia, I can use it as a skirt when entering a temple.

I have used it as a beach cover, a towel and I have even used a sarong to dress up an outfit too. This is an excellent piece of travel clothing to add to anyone’s luggage.

travel clothes for women

Dave and I travel full time, so I want to give full disclosure that we do not travel carry on only.

Our carryon bags are filled with camera gear and computers, but when you look in our backpack, you’ll see that the least amount of items we bring during our travels are clothing.

We don’t have a lot of clothes because we like to pack other things to be prepared for any situation. Just a few shirts, pants, shorts and skirts and we’re good to go.

We’ve received a lot of emails lately about our travel bags so we thought a good first post to address some of your questions would be to start with sharing must have mix-and-match items that can be used for several situations during your travels and you’ll look great too!

I m doing 2 months in SEA next spring and have a gazillion clothes I barely wear that are basically brand new. What s that Pareto rule we use 20% of the things we have 80% of the time. So I m researching my buns off to learn how to mix and match clothing to get different outfits (I m also terrible at matching so this is certainly a challenge!). Great article, thanks for the tips! :o)

Your travel wardrobe recommendations are wonderful and are helping me figure out how to reduce my packing! I tend to bring sensible items, but for whatever reason, I always have way too much of it. (Working on it though!) I agree with traveling with a jeggings type ponte pant, you can get so much use night, day, dressy or casual while on the go. Always looking for just the right flat though so I submitted an order which included the ballet flats. They are priced $26.99 right now so definitely could not pass those up! My next order will include the Bermudas and the drape knit top. Thanks again for sharing!

The ballet flat is something new to me . Thank You 🙂

Great trips. Ready to put them into practice

Great blog! Thanks for your useful tips. I will follow all these tips when i will travel to Medellin.

Have a great time !

I also love using ballet flats when I am on the road because it’s comfortable and looks nice on a photo than rubber shoes. LOL.

So true. I’ve also found they look better than flipflops. I used to wear flipflops everywhere, but now the flats look so much better in a photo and they feel just as comfortable.

Good to know we’ve got good people looking out for the well being of us lady’s appearances when we travel.

You have some great tips! I love wearing lightweight clothes when we travel and end up wearing gym clothes. It’s a real bummer when we want to take a nice photo somewhere and I look like a bum! I had one great convertible dress in black that was my go-to for when it was time to look nice. I think on our next trip I am going to try and travel with more style while still packing practical clothes.

I know exactly how you feel. We’ve upgraded our travel clothes over the past few years and I am loving our photos so much more. I used to be such a slob. Now I’ve found that I can fit in in the city and while out on a trek or hike. I don’t feel uncomfortable when I have join civilization anymore 🙂

Great blog. Thanks for your excellent list.

I am so glad to hear you say you do not travel with just carry on! I agree with your clothing advice- I try to stick to a color scheme and if the piece won’t match everything else and I can’t wear it for at least three purposes, it isn’t going. I have discovered wool clothing and I love it- good in hot or cold weather, easy to layer, machine washable, doesn’t ever smell (great for when you need to stretch it another day until you find a washing machine), comfortable and it looks great. I struggle with shoes. It is hard to find comfortable, lightweight and good looking all in one shoe! I am going to check out your ballet flat recommendation. Thanks for sharing your advice.

Thanks Elizabeth. I don’t know how people manage carry on only. I like having different changes of clothes and I like my full size conditioner and hairspray 🙂 A colour scheme is perfect. Right now I’m into warm colours and they all go well together. and yes, easy layer and odour resistant are key. We’re going on 3 weeks of travel without a proper washing machine because we’ve been moving destinations a lot, and we are thankful for that. Easy washing in a sink has been extremely helpful.

Very nice blog and best acknowledgement about travel i like this blog we regular visit here for latest updates.

Thanks for all the tips you are right the best thing we can do is to have clothes that is versatil to use with everything

Thanks Izy, I have found that with my mix and match clothes, I can have a different look each day. Accessories help a lot too 🙂

Travel Marketing Best Practices: How To Apply The 7P’s To Make Your Travel Business More Successful

Understanding the crux of the 7Ps of marketing is pertinent for you as a tour operator. It can help you analyze your competitive strategies, capitalize on key elements of marketing to attract new customers and ultimately reach your sales targets.

The marketing mix involves various processes, each one focusing on different areas of your marketing strategy. These different processes all need to work together in order for you to successfully attract and generate new customers.

In this guide, we’ll break down the 7s of marketing and cover some of the most important travel marketing best practices to keep in mind with each of these different areas.

WeTravel Academy Course: Content Marketing for Tourism Businesses

The 7Ps of Marketing for Travel Businesses

The beauty of the marketing mix is that it helps you to set objectives and create a clear roadmap for your business to promote itself in the market. This includes the different marketing channels and tactics that are applied.

In 1960, professor Jerome McCarthy first proposed the idea of the 4Ps of marketing - which refers to the four elements that make up a traditional marketing mix. This applies to any kind of business. The 4Ps are

However, strategies in marketing have changed tremendously since then, and the way different types of businesses reach customers varies. This resulted in the 4Ps evolving. It only made sense to add additional Ps to accommodate all industries. These Ps include

  • Physical Evidence

The 7Ps can help you attract your target audience more easily and provide the right kind of marketing messages and value to turn those prospects into paying customers.

Let’s break down the 7Ps of travel marketing.

1. Product

First, there’s your product. This refers to what you’re selling your customers, and it’s what your entire travel marketing strategy will be centered around.

For many traditional businesses, a product is a physical item that you can place in your basket, or buy online and unwrap at home. However, in the travel industry, your product is not tangible. For travel businesses, product refers to some kind of tour, service, or travel experience.

travel advertising

When it comes to travel marketing best practices, you must understand how your product fits into the market, and what type of demand there is for your product. You’ll also need to know the unique selling proposition (USP) behind your product, and what will motivate a customer to make a purchase (or, book a tour).

There are typically a lot more factors involved in the purchase decision process for travel products. For example, a travel business customer will need to

  • Plan their trip around what free time they have available
  • Plan their trip around the weather
  • Purchase without understanding the direct effect, or benefits, the travel purchase will offer them
  • Travel purchase decisions often involve a fairly large investment, without getting a tangible product in return

This means there’s a lot to keep in mind when marketing your travel product to your audience. Understanding the market conditions, the competition, and what makes your product special is essential for attracting and retaining customers.

Of course, you also need to offer a high-quality travel product if you want to make a lot of sales.

Some travel marketing best practices include sharing as many details about your products as possible on your website, sharing videos and images of your travel experiences on social media, and showcasing reviews and testimonials from past customers.

2. Place

Place is an element of the marketing mix that refers to where and how you make your product available. Because your travel product is intangible, you will likely be selling it online (as opposed to a shelf in a shop). You could also be selling through a booking platform, an OTA , or a travel desk.

Travel marketing best practices

Whatever the case, travel marketing best practices here involve making sure that the place you sell your product offers a smooth customer journey. This means providing a booking process that is easy and secure, and that includes all of the information your customers could possibly want to know.

For example, your website should include detailed booking pages for each of its travel experiences, with an easy and secure payment gateway. This is easy to apply with travel booking tools like WeTravel . The right booking platform will reduce friction in the customer journey, helping you sell more tours.

3. Price

The price of your product, or tour, is arguably the most important factor in your travel marketing mix. You need to price your tours strategically in order to make enough profit, be competitive in the market, and attract enough bookings.

First, you’ll need to understand the market and the competition to understand the costs of other tours in your area.

Second, you’ll need to align your pricing strategy to the USP and value your tour offers. It’s important to relate price to value. This is because customers will be willing to pay more for a travel experience if it is justifiable, and the extra money relates to extra value.

If you offer the same experience as the competition but charge more, then your tours will seem unappealing. If you offer added value to your travel experience, then you can get away with charging more. You’ll also be able to use this added value as your USP.

travel advertising

Of course, you also need to cover your overhead costs and make sure that your pricing strategy makes sense for your travel business.

How much you charge for your travel products determines how your business will fit into the market, so it's important to have a full understanding of your financial situation in order to price appropriately.

4. Promotion

This element of the marketing mix is all about how you promote your travel business to your target audience. Travel advertising includes a lot of key tactics, so, you should choose ones that best align with your target audience and overall marketing goals.

When it comes to travel marketing best practices, it’s recommended that you utilize a wide range of marketing channels and processes. This could include:

  • Email marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • SEO and content marketing
  • Paid advertising
  • Physical marketing (flyers, posters, etc)

It is also essential that you have an optimized website , as this is where you will direct all of your marketing efforts to generate bookings.

Whatever tactics you use to promote your travel business, you need to make sure that they align with your customer journey and with the behavior patterns of your target audience/buyer persona.

This means using marketing channels that your target audience routinely uses, and promoting the right messages and content on these channels to appeal to your viewership.

Of course, you’ll need to keep your USP and market positioning in mind when running your travel advertising campaigns. Use your promotional efforts to stand apart from the competition and strategically communicate why customers should book your tours and what kind of value they would get in return.

You can check out our guide to creating a travel business inbound marketing strategy for more tips and tactics.

Travel marketing best practices

5. People

Who represents your business? This is incredibly important for travel marketing, as your products are closely linked and associated with the people who deliver them.

If you sell a product like a toothbrush, customers wouldn’t care much about who is behind the toothbrush. However, if you’re offering a guided tour through the Andes, then the person providing the tour is an essential factor in understanding whether the tour is worth purchasing.

This means that people are a factor in your travel marketing mix that you need to carefully consider and promote.

In terms of travel marketing best practices, anyone who comes into contact with a customer and represents your business must maintain a certain standard of friendliness and professionalism. The people behind your business play a major role in shaping the customer journey and influencing their purchase decision.

It’s also a good idea to display your credentials and experience on your website or booking pages. Use the people in your travel business to offer more value to your customers.

For example, you could highlight the fact that all of your tour guides are trained in first aid safety, or that they are experts on the local flora and fauna. This gives your tours a competitive edge and gives customers more reason to book your tours and helps them develop more trust in your travel business.

6. Processes

Process is one of the unique “P’s” of marketing for travel businesses. This refers to the journey, or processes, that a customer goes through from when they book your tour to when they complete it. Your goal is to make these processes as enjoyable as possible for the customer.

travel advertising

Make sure that you offer customers all of the information they need at any given stage of their journey. You also want to ensure that your customers can easily communicate with your business when needed.

Some useful tactics involve sending automated consummation messages after a customer makes a booking, and sending the customer a pack of relevant information before the tour. All of their booking information, itinerary, waivers, and anything else, should be easily accessible.

When optimizing the processes in your marketing mix, it's also important to consider efficiency for your business. Your aim should be to plan out a strategy that is reliable, scalable, and efficient.

Using the right travel booking system is essential as it will help to provide a smooth journey for both your customers as well as for your business.

7. Physical Evidence

This is the final element of the travel marketing mix. Physical evidence can seem tricky because travel experiences are largely intangible. This means it can be difficult for your customers to look into the physical evidence of your travel experiences before making a booking.

However, carefully presenting any physical details about your business or topics will play an important role. Keep your vehicles clean and well maintained, make sure your staff are well-presented, and carefully maintain your storefront if you have one. These elements all help to build trust.

You can also use your website to help you provide physical evidence around your tours. Make sure your website is modern, trustworthy, and functional.

Travel marketing best practices

You should also try to incorporate a lot of images and videos of your travel experiences into your booking pages, to help customers gain an idea of what these experiences look like.

Stay Ahead of Travel Marketing Best Practices

Staying ahead of travel marketing best practices can be tricky because the industry is constantly changing. As technology develops and customer journeys change, so do the marketing tactics and strategies you use to attract new customers.

That is why it's important to stay ahead of industry trends with a reliable and trusted platform.

A key resource in this regard is WeTravel Academy . The sole focus of this resource is to create a valuable “database” (so to speak) to help all the professionals in the travel industry with a wide range of focus areas. This may include group and multi-day travel, international tour operators, other trip leaders, wellness, and retreats.

You can freely access a wide range of e-books, webinars, courses, and articles to help you stay ahead of industry best practices and grow as a professional and tour business.

Conclusion

Understanding the key elements of a travel industry marketing mix is important for being able to develop a well-rounded marketing strategy.

You need to understand and address all of the different factors involved in the customer journey and decision-making process in order for you to be successful at marketing your travel company.

The travel marketing best practices above should help you lay the foundation. Of course, you’ll also need to be set up with the right travel software and tools to help you seamlessly implement these different areas of the travel marketing mix.

Your Marketing Mix: the 7 Ps of Travel and Tourism Marketing

overlay

As a busy tour operator, developing a marketing strategy for your tour or activity business can feel like a daunting task. You already have your hands full ensuring your business is running smoothly, you can’t afford to waste time or money on the wrong things. Fortunately, you don’t have to go in without a plan. A good way to build out your knowledge of the fundamentals of marketing is to understand the marketing mix and how to use the 7 Ps of marketing in the travel and tourism industry.

mix in travel

A marketing mix is the set of actions that a business uses to promote its brand in the market and influence customers to purchase their product. An effective marketing mix focuses its efforts in multiple areas to build a robust marketing plan. These areas were initially known as the 4 Ps of marketing (product, price, place, and promotion) and were first proposed by marketing professor Jerome McCarthy in 1960. Since then, marketing tactics have evolved and in an attempt to better address businesses in the service industry, the 4 Ps were expanded to 7 and now include people, process, and physical evidence.

Why Do They Matter?

Today, we’ll be exploring all 7 Ps of the marketing mix and how they can help you build an effective marketing strategy for your tour or activity business. While each element of the marketing mix is important on its own, collectively they provide a framework for creating a plan that is unique to your business and your target audience. Following the 7 Ps will help you better understand your brand so that you can develop a marketing strategy that works for you on all fronts.

The 7 Ps of Travel and Tourism Marketing

Bike Rentals

The first P of the marketing mix is product. That is, what is it that you’re selling to your customers? In most industries, the product is something that is tangible. The customer can walk into a store, purchase a product off the shelf, and take it home with them. However, in the tourism industry, the product provided is often an intangible service in the form of a tour, an experience, or even the destination itself.

Tangible or intangible, to give your product the best chance of success, it’s important to ensure that there is a demand for what you’re selling. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of the service you’re offering, the needs you’re fulfilling for your customers, and why they aren’t able to get it anywhere else. What makes your tour or activity unique and better than that of your competitors?

Answering these questions will help you discover your unique selling proposition (USP) and determine your positioning in the market. Above all, ensure that the tour or activity you’re providing is the best that it can be.

Pricing

Next up is the price of your tour. What are your customers willing to pay for what you’re offering? Determining how to price your tour or activity package requires the careful consideration of factors such as competitor pricing, the budget of your target audience, and your own overhead and operational costs. Ultimately, you want to price your tour or activity competitively so that it is both attractive to your customers and profitable for your business.

Online Booking

The third P of the travel and tourism marketing mix is place, or the distribution method of your product. This is where and how you make your tour or activity available to your customers for purchase. As mentioned earlier, because the service you’re providing is intangible, the places where your customers can book your tour will primarily be online, whether it be through your booking website, social media platforms, or online travel agencies (OTAs) like Expedia and Booking.com.

Your online booking website is one of the most important places your tours and activities can be found, so make sure it’s doing everything you need by booking a demo with Rezgo .

Physical locations like your tour or activity office as well as neighboring businesses that you’ve partnered with are also places where your customers might access your product.

The last of the original 4 Ps of marketing is promotion, or how your customers learn about your tour or activity. Tour promotion encompasses all the tactics that businesses typically use when they think about marketing. This includes both physical and digital advertisements, social media posts , press releases, events, special deals or limited-time offers, customer reviews, and partnerships with hotels or other local businesses at your destination. The possibilities are endless when it comes to tour promotion and are really only limited by your own creativity.

People

The people who represent your business and the customer service they provide are especially important when it comes to the success of a tour or activity company. Unlike businesses where physical products can sometimes speak for themselves, the overall experience a customer receives on a tour is greatly influenced by the people they interact and engage with. This includes tour guides, customer service representatives, and even booking agents. To ensure a positive experience for your customers, it’s important that anyone who interacts with your customers on your business’ behalf (even indirectly) is highly professional and knowledgeable about your products and services.

the sixth of the 7 Ps of tourism marketing is the process. The process that a customer goes through from the moment they book your activity to when they finally complete the tour should be as pleasant, convenient, and seamless as possible. Customers should be able to access any information they need with ease including their itinerary, booking info, waivers, etc.

Just as important is how your business decides to deliver this information to your customers. Plan and design your process so that it is easily replicated for efficiency, reliability, and consistency. A good booking system can automate a lot of your process to make sure the customer experience is smooth and efficient from start to finish.

Physical Evidence

Lastly, we have physical evidence. Once again, because the experiences and services provided by a tour or activity company are usually intangible, it can be difficult for interested customers to try them out before committing to a purchase or booking.

There are, however, still ways for tour operators to use physical cues to help convert potential customers. Some of these include website design, physical tour office layout, employee uniforms, brochures, marketing material, and souvenirs or free swag. It’s also worth highlighting any tangible elements of your tour that customers can look forward to in your promotional material or tour descriptions .

Measuring the Success of Your Travel and Tourism Marketing Mix

mix in travel

Using the 7 Ps of marketing to build out a strategy for your tour company is great, but how do you know if it’s working? Measuring the success of your tourism marketing mix can be accomplished in a few ways. The first is to calculate your return on investment (ROI) to determine whether the money you’ve spent on your marketing initiatives are actually bringing in enough sales for a profit.

Another way to check on the performance of your marketing strategy is by using analytics on engagement data. How many people actually saw or clicked on that ad, post, or email? How many of those clicks converted into a sale?

mix in travel

Rezgo offers a powerful reporting system that allows tour operators to track the performance of their marketing campaigns and analyze the impact of each referrer or promo code. By studying this data you can adjust your marketing strategy so that you’re focusing your effort and allocating your money in the most effective places.

There’s a lot to consider when developing a marketing strategy for your tour or activity business, but now that we’ve broken down the 7 Ps of a tourism marketing mix, you know exactly which areas you should be focusing on.

Work on planning and building out each marketing element separately, but remember that they need to complement each other and work together harmoniously for the biggest impact. Adjusting your strategy in one area should affect the way you approach another.

Rezgo helps tour and activity providers thrive by giving them the tools and guidance they need to work efficiently and expand their business. You’re passionate about providing amazing experiences. Essential Tips for Traveling with Trimix Injections!

If you are traveling with Trimix, you must take steps to keep it cool and ensure it remains effective. Indeed, like most penile injections, Trimix can only stay unrefrigerated for a few hours. So, let's go through our series of essential tips for ensuring your drug's effectiveness while enjoying your travels!

4AllFamily portable cooling cases for medications

Trimix Storage Instructions: Reminder!

Trimix is a medication commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction . It contains a combination of three active drugs (alprostadil, papaverine, and phentolamine) administered via penile injections.   While Trimix is an effective treatment, these drugs are quite unstable and require proper storage to maintain their potency and efficiency.   As a rule of thumb, Trimix must be stored and transported as follows :

  • Open in-use Trimix vials should be stored in the refrigerator at 3 6°F - 46°F (2°C - 8°C) for about one month.
  • They can be left at room temperature for short periods of time only (up to 24 hours at the most)
  • Stocks of unopened Trimix vials should be stored in the freezer at 0°F - 31°F (-18°C - 0°) and can last for 6 months and up to one year.

Different compounding pharmacies manufacture Trimix with varying   dosage. Your Trimix vials may have a different shelf life and temperature recommendations depending on its specific composition. Always refer to the storage instructions delivered with your medication.

How to Keep Trimix Cold While Traveling?

These strict storage conditions make traveling with Trimix challenging, as it can only stay at room temperature for a few hours. Travelers then need to find a way to transport their injections refrigerated (or frozen if traveling for over a month).   A medical-grade travel cooler is an essential item for anyone traveling with Trimix.

Use a Trimix travel case

4AllFamily designs travel coolers for people who rely on refrigerated drugs like Trimix.   We offer high-performing portable refrigerators that keep your penile injections refrigerated for up to several days (when running on battery power) or unlimited time (when plugged into a power source).   Depending on your lifestyle and the kind of travel you're planning, you can choose from a wide range of products to accommodate your needs.

Plus, with additional batteries, you can extend the refrigeration time for your travels by up to 12 hours per battery.   Alternatively, by plugging it into any USB or household power source, you can use it as a regular fridge with no time limit . So, whether camping, road-tripping, or relaxing in a hotel spa room, this travel fridge has got you covered!

4AllFamily Nomad Portable Cooler for Insulin & Medications - Blue

  • USB power + Freeze packs: it keeps fridge temperature for up to 50 hours when it’s 104°F (40°C).
  • Freeze packs only (no electricity): your Trimix vials will be safe and refrigerated for 28 hours!
  • USB power only (no freeze packs): the travel fridge maintains constant fridge temperature when the outside temperature is no higher than 95°F / 35°C!

All our travel coolers are TSA -approved for airplane travel, so you can legally board the plane with your Trimix vials refrigerated in your carry-on bags.   We're here to help. Should you have any doubts or inquiries, please leave a comment below or contact us .   Related article : Does Testosterone Need to Be Refrigerated?

Freeze Trimix before traveling

To extend the shelf life of your Trimix vials while traveling, you can freeze them 24 hours before departure . That would ensure your drug remains colder for longer. If it's already frozen, take it out of the freezer at the last minute and put it in your travel cooler immediately.   Warning : Do not refreeze Trimix! Thawing and refreezing Trimix repeatedly is not recommended.

Keep your injections out of direct sunlight

Direct sunlight can cause your medication to overheat and lose its effectiveness. Therefore, always keep Trimix in a shaded area . Also, avoid leaving your medicines in the car, especially in hot climates, and only take them outside your cooler when needed.

Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature

4AllFamily’s Pioneer and Voyager travel fridges are equipped with an integrated thermostat and a temperature display .   But if you decide to use a DIY travel cooler, make sure to monitor the temperature inside regularly and adjust ice packs as necessary. Cooler bags made with insulated lunch bags and ice aren’t reliable enough to travel with Trimix injections as the temperature inside is fluctuating a lot.   Related article : How to Travel with Refrigerated Medications?

More Tips for Traveling with Trimix Injections

If you're flying with Trimix , there are a few things you need to keep in mind to ensure a hassle-free trip.   First, pack your injections in your carry-on bag , not your checked luggage. Keep the medication in its original packaging, and bring a copy of the prescription with you.   The Transportation and Security Administration (TSA) allows medical liquids such as injectable medications in amounts larger than 3.4 ounces, but they must be declared at security checkpoints. Of course, you're also allowed to fly with the syringes you need for your injections!   Related article : How to Travel with Syringes & Injectable Drugs?

Giada De Laurentiis' Favorite Trail Mix For Travel Days

Giada De Laurentiis at Vegas Uncorked by Bon Appetit

Giada De Laurentiis is a busy person with a lot on her plate. When she's not writing cookbooks, producing cooking shows, or creating content for her fans, she's probably traveling. Whether jet-setting for business or pleasure, she is always on the move. One day she's in New York to film the "Today Show," and the next she's in Italy visiting family and researching local cuisine. From Rome, she might hop a flight to Las Vegas to oversee the two Giada De Laurentiis signature restaurants she opened there, before flying back to the Hamptons or Pacific Palisades to spend time with her daughter.

Her Giadzy website has a whole section dedicated to the incredible world destinations she visits — full of travel tips. One of her most practical pieces of advice is to always have snacks with you when you travel, and her favorite is trail mix.

Created in the early 1900s, trail mix was devised as a portable, nutritious, and high-energy food that campers and hikers could pack in and eat on the go. For these reasons and more, it makes sense that Giada would rely on it for her trips and active lifestyle. Made from nuts and dried fruit along with other add-ins, it's a reliable source of fats and carbohydrates to stave off hunger between meals. In an interview with Forbes about visiting Venice, De Laurentiis shared that her favorite trail mix combo is made with Marcona almonds, walnuts, dried cranberries, and chocolate chips.

The difference between Marcona and California almonds

One special ingredient in Giada De Laurentiis' trail mix is Marcona almonds. While 80% of the world's almonds are grown in California, the Marcona almond is a gourmet variety grown only in Spain. Hailed as the "Queen of Almonds," Marconas differ from California almonds in a number of ways. The first difference is their appearance; whereas regular almonds have a tapered and oval shape, Marcona almonds are plump and round, resembling macadamia nuts. They are softer than California almonds and have a natural moisture that lends itself to baking.

The creamy Marcona almond is sweeter in flavor, with a butteriness that comes from its high-fat content (a good source of vitamin E and cholesterol-balancing monounsaturated fats). All almonds share similar nutrition and have an impressive six grams of protein per ounce. Marconas are delicious to snack on raw and — in the Mediterranean region — are commonly prepared by blanching then roasting or pan frying in oil, served with a sprinkle of rosemary and salt.

The other nut featured in Giada De Laurentiis' snack mix is also a nutritional powerhouse. Walnuts are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are one of the best plant food sources (and the only tree nut source) for the omega-3 essential fatty acid, containing 2.5 grams in a one-ounce serving. The earthy, nutty flavor of walnuts with their slightly bitter note goes well with the sweet almonds and the even sweeter chocolate and cranberries in the mix.

Bon voyage and bon appétit

Dried fruit gives you an energy boost , and raisins are the traditional choice. In fact, before it was called trail mix, it used to be known as GORP, which legend has it is an acronym for "good ol' raisins and peanuts." Other options include dried apricots, papaya, pineapple, banana chips, and desiccated coconut. De Laurentiis uses dried cranberries in her travel trail mix, a power snack that helps get her through long flights. Tart and sweet, cranberries are the perfect chewy bridge between the crunchy nuts and smooth chocolate.

As for the chocolate chips she prefers in her trail mix, it's anyone's guess — though she does admit to having a soft spot for chocolate in any form. "I like anything with chocolate. Dark chocolate. Cheap chocolate, or expensive chocolate, I don't care. It's the thing that perks me up," she told Forbes. Different varieties of chocolate have various levels of sweetness, from bittersweet, to semisweet, to milk chocolate — the sweetest and most popular.

For another travel snack that pairs sweet with salty, De Laurentiis makes a trail mix using her own Simply7 by Giada olive oil popcorn, pistachios, dried cherries, and bittersweet chocolate chips. In her Gifts Galore episode of Food Network's "Giada at Home," she showed how simple it is to make a trail mix by simply combining almonds, goji berries, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, and dried apricots ... no recipe required.

Mix and Match Cruise Vacations: That Include Both Land or River Cruise Add-Ons

By Pauline Frommer

Frommers.com

Is variety the spice of vacations? Those in the cruise industry seem to think so, and they’re offering up more and more “hybrid” vacations options each year, supplementing time on the open seas with other forms of travel. Whether or not the cruiser can craft better—and more affordable—combo vacations on their own is an open question. But for those who like the convenience of having someone else create the itinerary, here are a few of the new and not-so-new “crossbreed” options now available.

1) River and Ocean : Some 34 new river cruise ship launched in 2014, evidence that there’s no hotter trend in travel than river cruising. So it should come as no surprise that the mammoth ocean liner companies want to get in on the game. In late October, Celebrity Cruises announced that it would be offering 16 new packages that combined river cruises with ocean voyages. No, they’re not going to try and wedge one of those jumbo 10,000 passenger ships onto the Danube or the Seine. Instead, the passengers who book these cruise lollapaloozas will spend about a week taking a classic river journey on a smaller boat (Amadeus is being used for most of the European itineraries, Aria for the Amazon) and then another week (or longer) on one of Celebrity’s big boats

Some of the itineraries are a bit wacky, like the one that appends a cruise down the Rhine to a Transatlantic sailing and hops around the Caribbean. Other itineraries make more thematic sense, like a Rhine River cruise followed by a voyage around the Mediterranean. All of the options are listed at www.celebritycruises.com/htmlpage/vacation-packages . And Princess Cruises is now offering add-on Yangtze River cruises with some of its Asian itineraries.

2)  Theme park and Cruise : Bumper cars, ziplines, wave pools, water slides, water coasters—you’ll find these amusement park rides at sea on many ships nowadays. To further please the adrenalin-chasing demographic, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and yes (of course) Disney, offer itineraries that combine visits to real theme parks with “watery ones”.  Disney offers its full panoply of DisneyWorld resorts, and emphasizes that the combination of the two types of vacations is a smart way for new cruisers to “test the waters”, taking just a three or four night cruise, but making a weeks’ vacation of it with the addition of time at DisneyWorld in Florida.  Royal Caribbean has partnered with Universal, for three-night stays before of after Bahamian, Caribbean or Mexican cruises. RCL’s packages have less choice in terms of hotels—Universal has only 4 currently open as compared to Disney’s 29—but they may have more appeal to the tweens and older set who are catered to with high tech coasters and “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Universal.  Carnival offers Universal, too, but only as a shore excursion and not for overnight stays. All three offer transportation between the parks and the ships.

3) Cruise and Tour : No groundbreaking news here, cruise-tours have been around for decades and are offered by pretty much every cruise line. What’s new is the variety of tours being offered, from wine-tasting tours in Canada to visits to the highlights of Peru (including Cusco and Machu Picchu) to customized two-night stays in London or NYC, with such enviable or silly offerings (depending on your point of view) as a “fashion breakfast” at Macy’s. Frankly, I have yet to find a cruise tour that couldn’t be recreated by an individual for less money. But these offerings should appeal to those who feel more comfortable traveling in the company of a professional tour guide.

How I handled my nerves about travelling in a body that's different to other people's

By Eliza Hull

Eliza Hull, a young woman with long, brown hair, sits at an outdoor dining table, smiling.

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Holidays are often met with a mix of fear and excitement for me.

While there's nothing like enjoying the sun, holidays involving pool time often mean I must push through some big mental barriers. The ones that tell me that my body is broken and that I look too different to show my feet and legs.

I have a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth, which I've had since I was five years old. It means I walk differently, have muscle loss, and can't get upstairs without a railing.

It also means my feet look different. I have toes that claw instead of sitting straight, scars all over my feet, and my feet fall differently as I walk.

When my family was invited to Thailand for a wedding at the start of the year, I was torn. While it would be a chance to take an overseas holiday, I worried about the possibility of swimming.

Why swimming makes me nervous

Over the years I have proudly shared my story of being disabled and advocated for disabled people, but I still fear showing my feet.

Going for a swim in public makes my stomach queasy, partly because I can't get out of the pool due to their inaccessibility and mainly because of the way people stare at my feet.

Often, I avoid swimming altogether. I am a mother of two who watches their kids during swimming lessons.

I generally don't get in the water when my partner takes my kids for a swim, even when I'm boiling on the sidelines. I've found it especially hard if we’re with other people or visiting friends with a pool.

As the trip to Thailand got closer, I found out the hen's party was going to involve a group swim. I automatically decided it would be too hard.

Eliza Hull sits on the edge of a pool at a holiday resort in Thailand.

What if I slipped? What if the people I hadn't met before looked at my legs and feet? Would they give me that look like they felt sorry for me?

Then I started to doubt my decision. How beautiful would it be to experience something like this overseas and with new people? I am a live-life-to-the-full kind of person! And we were going away with good, kind people — people who I know well and trust. I knew deep in my heart they wouldn't judge me or want me to feel worried.

Two questions that helped

Feelings of dread were starting to ruin my excitement for the trip. So, I decided to try and calm my nerves by catching up with my good friend Jacob Darkin, who is a disability advocate and wheelchair user.

I told him my fears about going to Thailand and suggested that perhaps I just pretend I'd forgotten my bathing suit. He laughed.

"Ask yourself this, Eliza, 'Will this matter in six weeks' time? Or six years' time?' Everybody thinks about their own bodies; they won't even notice! And the most beautiful outfit someone can wear is their confidence," he said.

Maybe he was right. What if it was in my head how much people notice? And who cares what they think? It was ableist to believe that everybody needed to look a certain way to be seen as 'beautiful.'

I packed my bathing suit and set off for Thailand. It was an extremely inaccessible country, with multiple stairs without railings. It meant I had to rely on my partner to get me around, who helped me tackle stairs by lifting and carrying me.

Taking the plunge

At the resort, the way in and out of the pool involved steps, but I still went swimming. In fact, I decided to celebrate who I was and walked around without shoes on. Yes, I got stares, but they didn't hurt me.

During our stay, I decided to treat myself to a foot scrub, which is something I normally stay clear of for fear of stigma. It made me feel like I was finally celebrating and loving myself, scars, and all.

Am I completely wholeheartedly self-accepting now? No, not quite. Maybe I never will be. It's going to take a lot more undoing of internalised ableism that I have been taught over the years through negative perceptions of disability than one trip away.

But I'm a work in progress, and I know going away was one step closer to me seeing my body as resilient, beautiful, and strong.

Planning to Combine Business and Leisure Travel? You’re Not Alone.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are trying to figure out where their duty of care obligations begin and end.

On a Sunday in late January, Melinda Buchmann, who lives in Florida and supervises client relations for RevShoppe, a 30-person remote company advising organizations on sales techniques and strategies, arrived in Banff, Alberta, to help set up a four-day company meeting.

The last day of the event, her husband, Josh, a director of strategic partnerships for the delivery company DoorDash , who also works remotely, joined her. They spent two leisurely days hiking in Banff National Park and visiting Lake Louise.

“I take advantage, because I don’t know when I’m going to return,” Ms. Buchmann said of the decision to combine downtime with a business trip.

As postpandemic work life has changed, and arrangements now include full-time office attendance as well as hybrid and remote work, so, too, has business travel. The phenomenon known as bleisure, or blended business and leisure travel, was initially embraced largely by digital nomads . But such combined travel is now also popular with people outside that group . Allied Market Research, a subsidiary of Allied Analytics, based in Portland, Ore., estimated that the bleisure travel market was $315.3 billion in 2022 and would reach $731.4 billion by 2032.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are struggling to determine where their legal obligation to protect employees from harm — their so-called duty of care — begins and ends. And workers may think that because their trip started with business, they will get all the help they need if something goes wrong on the leisure end. Instead, they should generally consider the leisure part of a trip as a regular vacation where they cover all expenses and contingencies.

Companies are responsible for knowing where their employees are during a business trip, covering expenses if an accident or emergency occurs, securing new lodging if a hotel is damaged, even swapping out a broken down rental car. Still, it’s not entirely clear if that coverage ends completely after the conference or the last client meeting.

Companies recognize that threats are increasing, said Robert Cole, senior research analyst focusing on lodging and leisure travel at Phocuswright, a market research company. They are trying to figure out how to take care of a valuable company resource, the employee, without leaving themselves open to financial risk or potential litigation.

“Crafting a comprehensive policy that balances business objectives, employee well-being and legal considerations can be challenging,” Nikolaos Gkolfinopoulos, head of tourism at ICF, a consulting and technology services company in Reston, Va., wrote in an email.

Employees may be on their own without realizing it and may be surprised by out-of-pocket expenses if they require hospital care abroad or evacuation, said Suzanne Morrow, chief executive of InsureMyTrip , an online insurance travel comparison site in Warwick, R.I.

Ms. Morrow said medical coverage provided by a company “is generally only for the dates of the actual business trip abroad.” If travelers are extending the trip for personal travel, she added, “they would want to secure emergency medical coverage for that additional time abroad.”

Employers and employees are left to figure out when the business portion of the trip ends and the leisure segment begins, a significant detail if an employee has a medical emergency. “Where does the corporation liability end?” said Kathy Bedell, senior vice president at BCD Travel, a travel management company.

Companies have varying policies to deal with the new travel amalgam. The chief executive of RevShoppe, Patricia McLaren, based in Austin, Texas, said the company provided flexible travel options and allowed employees to work anywhere they choose.

Even so, there are constraints. The company requires all employees, including executives, to sign liability and insurance waivers when they are on a voluntary company-sponsored trip, such as an off-site meeting. Such waivers typically place responsibility on employees for their own well-being. And if they bring someone, they are responsible for that person’s expenses.

Employees are responsible for requesting the paid time off and notifying their managers of their whereabouts, although that part is not a requirement. Managers have to ensure adequate staffing, Ms. McLaren said.

Elsewhere, employees may not bother to mention the leisure portion of their trip. Eliot Lees, a vice president and managing director at ICF, said he had been on trips as a child with his parents when they combined business and leisure. His parents were academics, who would piggyback vacations onto conferences.

Now he does the same. “I don’t think I ever asked for approval,” he said. (ICF has no formal business-leisure travel policy. It’s allowed as part of personal time off.) After a conference in the Netherlands last year, he spent four days hiking in the northern part of the country.

“I go anywhere, and take more risks than I should,” he said. He said he didn’t carry personal travel or accident insurance.

Any nonchalance may quickly evaporate if a threat emerges. Security experts say even low-risk locations can become high-risk for a few days or weeks of the year.

“Companies are concerned about losing visibility into a traveler’s whereabouts if they booked flights and hotels outside their corporate travel management company,” Benjamin Thorne, senior intelligence manager in London for Crisis24, a subsidiary of GardaWorld, wrote in an email. “The company may think the traveler is in one city when, in reality, they could have booked a holiday package to another nearby city. This lack of visibility by the company makes it difficult to support travelers when a disaster occurs.”

He also raised the possibility that “a traveler with bleisure travel reservations and expectations may find their work trip canceled due to changes in the risk environment or company policy, disrupting their leisure plans.”

Will a company step in off hours if there’s a problem? “That depends on how you are booked,” Mr. Cole, the senior research analyst at Phocuswright, said. A rule of thumb is the further you get from corporate control, the greater the gray area gets.

Half of GoldSpring Consulting’s clients take the responsibility for the entire trip, said Will Tate, a partner at the consultancy based in Cross Roads, Texas, and a certified public accountant. They don’t want the reputational risk. The other half say: “The business trip ended Friday. That’s when we end our duty of care.”

Some companies are trying to define and narrow the gray area. “If you are clearly on personal time, there is no legal requirement for your employer to provide for you,” said Nicole Page, a lawyer whose practice includes employment law at Reavis Page Jump in New York.

Uber provides employees with advisories before a trip, travel assessments, safety tips while traveling and emergency travel assistance, including medical aid, airport travel support, urgent and emergency assistance, and lost or stolen personal property insurance whether they are on business or pleasure travel or a combination.

And at DoorDash, Chris Cherry, head of global safety and security, wrote in an email that “while personal travel is not something we track, we have received requests to extend our travel support capabilities to personal travel.” Mr. Cherry said in those cases, the company has manually added employee leisure itineraries to its travel risk management system and “provided the same level of overwatch that we do for regular business travel.”

The Buchmanns plan to travel this month to Barcelona, Spain, for the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention. DoorDash will have a booth, and Mr. Buchmann will work on the exhibit floor and also entertain clients.

Ms. Buchmann will accompany him. She plans to go sightseeing in the morning, and work in the afternoons and evenings Barcelona time. She will also take three days of paid time off and has shared her plans with Ms. McLaren, the RevShoppe chief executive.

They will stay a day after the conference and plan to visit the Dalí Theater and Museum in Figueres. “I’m sure there will be no shortage of tapas and window shopping along way,” Mr. Buchmann said. He expects to be back at work the next Monday.

UK weather: Hottest day of the year expected - and warning of 70mph winds as Storm Kathleen moves in

A mixed picture is forecast for Saturday as parts of East Anglia and southeast England could top Portugal and bask in temperatures in the low 20s.

The UK is expected to see the hottest day of the year so far today - with towns and cities set to bask in balmy temperatures while others are battered by 70mph winds.

The Met Office said temperatures are likely to reach up to 22C (72F) on Saturday as unseasonably warm air from the continent brings sunny spells to parts of the country.

Ellie Glaisyer, a meteorologist for the forecaster, said that Storm Kathleen "is the reason we are seeing the warmer temperatures, because the location of the storm - situated out towards the west of the UK - is bringing a southerly wind across the UK".

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon added that "it's not unusual for these storm systems to bring warmer air with them".

The highest temperature of the year so far was 19.9C (68F), recorded at the end of January at Achfary in northwest Scotland.

File pic: PA

Meanwhile a mixed picture is set for today - with the forecaster earlier updating its warnings to say stronger gusts are more likely over the weekend as Kathleen batters the western parts of Britain.

Gusts of 50mph are widely expected and exposed places could see 60mph to 70mph.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued for wind in areas - covering Cornwall, much of Wales, parts of Lancashire and Cumbria, and up into central Scotland and Northern Ireland from 8am to 10pm.

Ms Glaisyer also said that the storm is likely to bring heavy rain overnight, "which will spread its way northwards across the country". By the morning, most places should see "a relatively dry start to Saturday".

Temperatures in the low twenties are also expected in southeast England, but the forecaster added that "the further west you are, where those strongest winds are in that yellow warning area, despite the temperatures being above average it will feel a little colder".

Pic: Met Office

The Met Office's update on yellow wind warnings said: "Stronger gusts are now expected across some parts of the warning area, with likelihood also increased."

It said there was a risk of "injuries and danger to life" from large waves and beach material being thrown on to sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

It added road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.

There could also be power cuts and mobile phone coverage may also be affected.

Mr Dixon added: "The outlook for Sunday for much of the UK is for showery conditions to continue particularly in northern and western areas again.

"It will generally feel a touch drier the further south-east you go through the day on Sunday as Kathleen gradually moves away northwards."

He added that the start of next week would see unsettled weather conditions with "rain continuing for many".

Storm Kathleen has been named by Ireland's national forecaster Met Eireann, which has issued its own warnings covering the whole country and urged the public to be "vigilant".

Cork, Kerry, Galway and Mayo are set to be the worst affected.

They are under an amber alert, meaning "very difficult travel conditions" and potential fallen trees, power outages and coastal flooding.

Shih-Tzu Poodle Mix Stares in Confusion As Sister Takes the Driver's Seat Instead of Mom

S ome dogs aren't huge fans of car rides, but a lot of them really love it — when it doesn't mean that they're going to vet, of course. Riding in the car can be a lot of fun, and sometimes, you even end up at the park, or to see grandma, or at Starbucks to get a pup cup. Basically, it's always going to be a good time... and part of that routine is knowing that Mom and Dad will be behind the wheel, making sure everyone gets to where they want to go safely.

Until it's someone else's turn to drive, of course... and apparently, that can make some dogs feel a bit suspicious! This one was definitely raising an eyebrow during a recent car ride when he did not  trust his driver that day — LOL!

This cute footage comes to us from @cheddar_shihpoo on TikTok and was shared on Tuesday, April 9. When a Shih-Tzu Poodle mix named Cheddar got into the backseat for a car ride, he was a bit shocked to see that his teenage sister is the one who got in the driver's seat and not  his mom, who is usually the one driving.

You can see the look of confusion all over his face. Cheddar is not amused!

In fact, he looks like most adults do when they're riding with their teen driver for the first time — a little concerned, mostly for their own lives. Ha!

"If he could reach for the seat belt he would," one commenter joked.

How to Keep Small Dogs Safe in Cars

Whether the person behind the wheel is an experienced and seasoned driver or they're brand new and still practicing, it's important to keep dogs of all sizes safe — but especially smaller dogs, who could easily get thrown around the car on a sharp turn!

This doesn't necessarily mean shelling out a lot of money on a pet restraint, either, since according to The Wildest, those products are unregulated and often don't hold up in crash tests anyway.

Instead, you may want to use a harness and seat belt, or travel with your dog in a crate. If your dog loves to ride with an open window like mine does, this makes it even safer for them to be able to do so without the risk of them jumping out or getting hurt if they stick their head out.

And just like where Cheddar is sitting, the backseat is always the safest.

I hope Cheddar was able to see that his big sis driving was not  a safety hazard. It'll probably take him some time to get used to this change, though!
