Essence of Mongolia - 7 Days Tour

Essence of Mongolia - 7 Days

We signed up for the 7-day "Essence of Mongolia" tour. Our tour guide, Shuree, and driver, Maga, were absolutely amazing. We appreciated the flexibility of the tour schedule -- the activities were nicely spread out and were not back-to-back -- so we never felt that we had to be constantly rushing from place to place. We also throughly enjoyed our experiences staying with the nomad families. The families were very warm and friendly, and it was nice to see how each family was slightly different from one another (some families were bigger, each family had different animals that they reared, etc). Shuree, our tour guide, was also incredibly attentive to our needs and interests over the course of the tour. For example, I had told her at some point that I liked the history of the Mongol Empire, so she took a lot of time and effort to go through all the exhibits with me when we were at the various museums (and also told me stories about the different Khans during our car rides). There were so many other wonderful examples like this. Overall, my husband and I had an amazing experience. The tour provided us glimpses into different parts of Mongolian history and culture, and really, the "Essence of Mongolia". Our guide and driver were always present and caring, and we always felt welcomed and well taken care of. Thank you, Tour Mongolia!

That was an extraordinary trip with Discover Altai Team. The Altai region is so beautiful, the nomadic families were very welcomed. I can't recommend enough the team and trip organization. My personal tips are: pack enough warm clothes, the night gets cold in tent. We had an amazing experience in this region and definitely recommend for everyone!!!

Eternal Blue Sky tour Tour

Eternal Blue Sky tour

Mongolia is a hidden gem tucked away between Russia & China, this beautiful country of 3 million inhabitants has lots to offer! Our travel agent Nomadic of Blue Skies designed an itinerary for 8 of us family members, ages ranging from 17 – 85! Mr. Uuganbayr Batbold (Boldoo), Director of the agency was personally interacting with me to plan the itinerary. We set off from Ulaan Baatar in two vehicles & explored central Mongolia for the next 7 days. The arrangements were superb, the vehicles were in good condition & we had skilled drivers Kuko & Pujai to transport us safely over the off road sections. We covered Terelj National Park, Khustai National Park to see the wild horses, at Elsen Tasarkhai we climbed the sand dunes, visited the Erdene Zuu Monastry, enjoyed the hot springs at Thenkher & had a stop over at picturesque Ugii Lake. The highlight of our trip was a visit to a typical nomad ger(tented dwelling). The couple welcomed us and served us some local delicacies. Our senior English speaking tour guide Mr. Tuvshoor was very professional and well informed about Mongolia. He was very attentive to our every request! The junior guide Ms Nara was very caring of my elderly parents. I would not hesitate to recommend Nomadic of Blue Sky as the preferred travel agent to organize a truly Mongolian Experience!

Nomadic Mongolia

My first group trip in years - created memories for a lifetime. Even the food was excellent, and going by expectations, that's saying something. Even the celiac and the vegetarian were well taken care of. G Adventures goes way above and beyond. Wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable guides (Bokho + Ulzi), and a great group of fellow travelers, still in touch two years later. For me, this trip, and G Adventures, really set the bar. I realize I've almost left Mongolia out of my review - fascinating place both in its history and its present. Start by reading: Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. And when you're there, be sure to catch some wrestling, and visit the Intellectual Museum in Ulaan Baatar. Grab a meal at the Pyongyang restaurant. And maybe bring home some Chinggis vodka.

What people love about active tours in mongolia.

A great experience, getting a taste of different environments, experiencing a little bit of the traditional nomadic culture and food, all with the help of a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Ulaanbaatar traffic is no joke, but once outside the city you really start to feel the immense openness and beautiful expanse of the countryside. Highly recommended.

statue of Genghis Khan in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Asia's last untamed frontier

A land of nomadic horsemen and arid steppes that stretch to either jagged mountains or the massive Gobi Desert, Mongolia's cold, windy landscape evokes images of Genghis Khan and Mongol hordes. Traditional and exotic, Mongolian culture still revolves around a nomadic heritage with the family ger (yurt) at the centre, and horses the only transport. In the capital of Ulaanbaatar, Russian, Chinese, and Tibetan influences mix, and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries are infused with Mongolian Shamanism. Every year the capital hosts the colourful Naadam festival, where thousands flock to compete in the "three manly games" of wrestling, archery, and cross-country horse racing, said to be tests of a warrior's courage and strength.

Where the Big Picture Gets Even Bigger

In the terrain of Mongolia’s rugged mountains, vast fertile steppe, and otherworldly Gobi Desert—you will find a beauty unique to only the wildest places on Earth.

The preservation of these dynamic landscapes may be owed in part to Mongolia being sealed off from the world for most of the 20th century. Yet the greater factor is that roughly a third of the population lives as nomadic herders, moving several times a year among the lush countryside, and they honor the land by respecting and preserving it—as Mongolian’s have done since the days of Chinggis Khan.

Nomadic Expeditions has been leading world-class tours and journeys throughout Mongolia since 1992, upon the signing of the country’s new democratic constitution—travel spearheaded by our Founder and CEO Jalsa Urubshurow, a pioneer in environmental conservation through sustainable tourism. Our infrastructure and expertise in the country has not only set a path for eco-travel to flourish here, it provides unrivaled authenticity and exclusivity throughout your Mongolia tour adventures.

We present the opportunity to seamlessly explore this land of astonishing marvels in rich detail—camel trekking across seas of hypnotic dunes, riding Mongolian horses in the footsteps of the long-ago Silk Road trade route, paddling the “dark blue pearl” of utterly pristine Lake Hovsgol, beholding the falconry of Kazakh golden eagle hunters who once relied on their birds to capture prey during winter in the Altai Mountains.

Staying in luxuriously appointed traditional gers and meeting local families of Mongolia’s eminently hospitable nomadic people—you will come to know more than a place, but a timeless way of life.

Experience the daily pattern of Mongolia’s nomadic traditions by arranging a stay in a family’s ger

Mongolia’s biggest drawcard is its incredible scenery: choose from grass-covered steppes, sparkling lakes or forested high mountains and plan a hike or camping trip, or do as the locals do and grab a horse (and a guide!) and venture out into Mongolia’s pristine wilderness

Arrange a camel trek into the otherworldly expanse of the Gobi Desert

Explore the ruins of Karakorum, the 13th century capital of Genghis Khan’s Mongol Empire in the beautiful Orkhon Valley

Catch a performance of traditional Mongolian folk dance, music and throat singing in Ulaanbaatar

While in the capital, learn about Mongolia’s rich history with a visit to the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art

Don’t miss the Naadam Festival, the country’s biggest annual party, where you can experience traditional costumes, dance, music, food and religious ceremonies as well as watch local men and women compete in a huge two-day tournament of the country’s three beloved ancient sports of wrestling, archery and horse racing

Shop for food, fresh produce, clothing, trekking gear, saddles, religious trinkets, traditional handicrafts, souvenirs and just about anything else you can think of at Ulaanbaatar’s giant Naran Tuul Market (nicknamed Khar Zakh or “Black Market”)—but beware of pickpockets and be sure to leave anything of value at home

See an entirely different side to Mongolia by visiting in winter: rug up like the locals do and head to the frozen Lake Khövsgöl for the annual Ice Festival, or watch fluffy Bactrian camels and their herders race and play polo at the Gobi Desert’s Thousand Camel Festival

A lush alpine meadow high in the Harhiraa mountains of Mongolia&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Tim Cope</i>

Mongolia’s location deep within central-eastern Asia, at generally high elevation and latitude and far from the moderating effects of any ocean or significant body of water, gives it a classic continental climate with long cold winters, short mild-to-hot summers, and dramatic annual and diurnal (daily) temperature fluctuations.

A major feature of Mongolia’s climate is its zuds (or dzuds), harsh winter conditions that kill millions of head of livestock each year, devastating Mongolia’s pastoral economy and the livelihood of its people. Mongols classify four different types of zud: white, black, cold and ice/iron. The white zud occurs when heavy snow stops animals from accessing the grasses beneath. The black zud occurs when freezing temperatures and a lack of snow cause drought, depriving animals of grasses. The cold zud occurs when temperatures are so low that animals must conserve energy rather than graze. The ice/iron zud occurs when heavy rains freeze on the ground, stopping animals from accessing the grasses beneath. In each variation, millions of animals can be lost, and herders can face multiple zuds in a bad year.

Precipitation is generally low, with Mongolia being well known for its remarkable number of clear, sunny, blue-sky days, averaging between 220-260 per year. Pre-Buddhist animist Mongols worshipped the “Eternal Blue Sky”, and Mongolia is lyrically referred to as “The Land of Eternal Blue Sky”.

Having said that, the weather is unpredictable and can turn ugly in an instant, with thunderstorms, hailstorms, sandstorms, heavy rains, ice, snowfall and fierce blizzards being a part of life.

Mongolia experiences extreme annual and diurnal (daily) temperature fluctuations. The temperature can vary as much as 44°C (80°F) between January and July, and variations of up to 30°C (55°F) in happen a single day.

In the capital of Ulaanbaatar, average daily temperatures vary from a minimum of -25°C (-13°F) to a maximum of -14.4°C (7°F) in January; to a minimum of 10°C (50°F) to a maximum of 21.8°C (71°F) in July.

Time in Mongolia

Mongolia is +8 hours ahead of UTC/GMT

Mongolian is the primary and official state language, spoken by 95% of the population. The language was written using the unique Mongolian vertical script until the 1940s, when it was replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet. The traditional alphabet is now being slowly reintroduced in schools, with the government planning to officially reinstate the traditional Mongolian alphabet at some point.

Many different dialects of Mongolian are spoken throughout the country, as well as other languages: Khamnigan Mongol, Kazakh, Tuvan and other Turkic languages.

Russian is the most common foreign language in Mongolia, followed by English. Korean is becoming increasingly common due to the many Mongolian ex-pats working in South Korea. Chinese, Japanese, German and various other European and Asian languages are also spoken.

USD cash is the most easily convertible currency although bear in mind that many other currencies such as AUD, GBP, NZD, CAD are also widely convertible in Ulaanabaatar.

In recent years ATMS have become very common in Ulaanbaatar, as well as vendors (big and small) accepting credit card/debit card payments. We recommend that whilst having some cash with you is always a good backup, withdrawing local currency via an ATM as the simplest way of procuring cash. TIP: You can withdraw cash at the airport on arrival with the help of the guide/driver who meets you. Just make sure your card is activated for overseas usage, and you know your card access details. Please note that ATMs in Mongolia do have maximum withdrawal amounts per transaction which is usually somewhere between 400,000-800,000 MNT. This may mean that before heading out into the remote country you make more than one withdrawal.

It is very difficult to change money outside of the capital Ulaanbaatar, so please ensure that whatever you intend to spend during the journey you have in local currency.

Please note that if bringing USD cash denominations less than $50 incur a poorer exchange rate.

ATMs outside Ulaanbaatar are few (they do exist in Olgiiy) and VERY unreliable.

Many shops and restaurants (only in Ulaanbaatar) accept visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB.

Cash advances can be made at the banks for a fee.

International Dialing Code

Type C plug

Electricity in Mongolia is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin type is C. (2 round prong).

In connection with the decision of the Government of Mongolia to declare 2023-2025 “Years to visit Mongolia” there is now a temporary exemption from visa requirements for the nationals of 34 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK for stays up to 30 days. These 34 countries join the current 27 with existing exemptions which include the US and Canada. All other nationalities should check with your nearest embassy or consulate for visa requirements.

We suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.

Money and valuables should always be stored safely when travelling. Keep your passport with you at all times and do not leave it in your main luggage. You will need it to change money and check into hotels. Where safety deposit boxes are available, we recommend that you use them. Keep jewellery and valuables to a minimum.

Mongolia, the largest landlocked country in the world, is located in East Asia and bordered by China to the south, east, and west, and Russia to the north. Its capital, Ulaanbaatar, is a blessed sparsely populated natural beauty while the country’s grand nature is home to the endangered snow leopard and Gobi bear.

From barren desert to rolling sand dunes; rocky valleys to deep canyons; lush, green national parks to snow-capped mountain ranges —Mongolia’s seclusion and geographic variety make it ideal for discovery via grand adventures…something the best Mongolia tours are all able to deliver.

It is famous for its nomadic way of life, rich cultural heritage, and distinct blend of traditional and modern influences with vast and bumpy landscapes.

Known for its signature distinguishing feature, the nomadic lifestyle, which can still be seen today as 40 percent of Mongolians are living as Nomadic herders in remote villages sleeping in traditional ger tents.

As a curious traveler wishing to get the most authentic and first-hand experience of a typical Mongolian Nomadic lifestyle, visiting a nomadic family and partaking in their everyday activities of milking cows, making cheese, and even sleeping in a ger tent will be a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in this unique way of life.

Covering an area of 1,564,116 square kilometers (603,909 square miles) with a population of just 3.35 million people, Mongolia becomes one of the most untapped and undisturbed natural wonders in the world.

Nomadic Mongolia

Wild mongolia, mongolia explorer, wild mongolia and golden eagle festival, mongolian panorama, cycling in mongolia and the naadam festival, g adventures.

What is it like to travel with the world’s best small group adventure travel operator with over a thumping 30 years of experience? Oh, you do not need to explain, we understand that feeling. We understand how it feels while traveling with G Adventures, a European tour operator with a proven track record in organizing the best experiences for its clients.

G Adventures takes pride in showing you the best places on the face of the earth and why you should always be on the get-go in search of hidden gems of the world. They have taken travelers to every nook and corner of the globe, this time, they want to take you to Mongolia for an unforgettable discovery. Are you set?

On this tour, you will be taken on a thrilling adventure to discover first-hand the typical nomadic lifestyle. Let’s say that you will experience living like a local in the remote villages of Mongolia. We are forced to ask how the nomadism way of life still stays today as a prominent part of the lives of 40% of Mongolians. A little bit of story here. Since the dawn of time, the Mongols have been nomadic people.

Genghis Khan established the Mongol Empire in the 13th and 14th centuries by uniting many nomadic tribes of the Mongol steppe, which is now known as modern-day Mongolia. Long after the reign of Genghis Khan, nomadism remains a way of life in modern Mongolia. Interesting! But you can find out more when you get to Mongolia.

You will visit the Gobi Desert located in southern Mongolia where you can find endangered species like snow leopards and Bactrian camels. The area is well known for its dunes of sand and rolling mountain peaks. You will meet a nomadic camel-herding family and opt to hike along the sand dunes as well as explore the area by riding a camel. We bet this is your first time on a camel’s back. No?

This fully-guided trip takes a group of 14 between the ages of 12 to 90 years old. It is family-friendly and highly adventurous and costs $2323 per person including your accommodation, meals and transportation for 14 days.

Intrepid Travel

What is the one thing you will never, ever trade? Time? You got it! Time is unquestionably your most valuable commodity at all times, even when you are on a thrilling vacation to Mongolia. We understand that you may be concerned that you will spend all of your valuable time with a group and will be constantly on the move If you opt for a group tour.

Well, you don’t have to worry about finding time for yourself with Intrepid Travel. Because there is always a mix of group and ‘you’ time on the tour. They know that you need time for yourself to rest well or be out and about with your partner exploring the nearby city on your own.

Intrepid Travel is known for its small tour groups of 10 people on average, as well as for embarking on massive adventures – all while traveling responsibly and building long-lasting friendships between people who shared everlasting memorable moments during a trip.

On this tour, you will mostly stay in tourist ger camps once you are outside of Ulaanbaatar, where you will encounter simple conditions such as outdoor toilets and nights without hot water. Don’t freak out, calm down. This is just going to be for a few days. By the way, have you ever used an outdoor toilet? If you have never, yuh! Happy First Time.

At the family ger camps, you will experience life as a nomad, living close to the land and the animals. There may be mattresses on the floor in a shared ger, with little or no electricity and no washroom facilities. You will appreciate your life and the comfort in which you live after this experience.

Because this is nothing like what you are used to, it is a challenge to get out of your comfort zone and experience the ways of living of the nomads. This is a true taste of a Mongolian Nomadic Lifestyle living in the open by the countryside.

But there’s more to this trip than that. Typically, the driving distance between destinations is hours long, but there will never be a dull moment because those long driving hours will be turned into relaxing road trips. From unwinding your tired body to singing beautiful songs with your tour group and discovering the unique scenery along the way, you are sure to love Mongolia more.

What is even more exciting is the occasional stops to interact with the locals and build strong connections with them. Nothing beats the feeling of connecting with a fellow human being from a completely different background; It is a pure feeling.

We have not even covered a pinch of what you can do on this tour. It’s an unending list. You can join the trip if you are between the ages of 15 to 99 years old. It costs $3491 per person and takes a group of 12 for 15 days. It includes your accommodation, meals and transportation.

Explore! As the name suggests, is a European tour operator with over 40 years of experience designing and guiding tours both within and outside of Europe. They enjoy taking their guests to hidden gems of a destination that few or no other travelers are aware of; it’s as if that is their unique weave of secrets. But what do you expect from a company in its forties? We mean, they have been in the game for a long time.

They believe that visitors should experience a country rather than just observe it. After all, why are you going on this trip in the first place? Explore will bring you closer to the Nomads and their way of life in their quest to give you an unforgettable experience.

Have you ever heard of the biggest traditional celebration in Mongolia? The Naadam Festival is an annual celebration of the three games of men. The games as prescribed by the Mongolians are Mongolian wrestling , horse racing , and archery , which can be dated as far back as the 13th century.

We were surprised to find out that traditional cuisine, or Khuushuur, is served throughout the Sports Stadium, along with a special fermented horse milk drink or sometimes called airag. Is horse milk drinkable? Well, you can find that out when you attend the festival.

On this tour, you will cross paths with the Gobi desert, visit the revived Erdene Zuu Monastery and explore Genghis Khan’s ruined capital of the 13th-Century which is located in what is now known as Central Mongolia. After centuries of ruin, the leftovers of Karakorum are still seen on the earth’s surface. This makes it an interesting place to visit and learn about the once-biggest empire on planet earth.

After your historical exploration, you will be ready to visit and discover the Yol Valley, where you will take a leisurely walk. The valley’s scenery is breathtaking, with permanent glaciers, small waterfalls, and a narrow, steep-sided canyon; you might be lucky to set eyes on the rare animals such as Siberian Ibex, snow leopards, and bearded vultures living there.

The tour is fully-guided and family-friendly. It takes a group of 16 between the ages of 16 to 85 years old and costs $3910 per person for 13 days including your accommodation, meals and transportation.

Our Testimonials and reviews

thanks to Nomadic Trails. Tulga and everyone on his team were so accommodating to any of our requests and even helped us navigate our way through the local market and barter for souvenirs. Truly delicious food as well at every stop. Phenomenal all around. Thank y’all for everything! Unbelievable experience in Mongolia!

Tulga, our tour guide is very knowledgeable and helpful, his driving skills also worth a praise and believe me, on these roads, it is a big advantage for someone like me with a motion sickness. They provided a cook for us, who exceeded all of our expectations. If you want a truly amazing experience just go with them!

and he was able to provide a varied, personal, unique experience. I wanted to create my own personal itinerary and Tulga had the knowledge, contacts, experience and sense of adventure to make that happen. I’ll be returning in 2020 to travel with Nomadic Trails again. Can’t wait!

hopping on our horses to go to the Tsaatan reindeer tribe, then finally staying at one of the best camps in Murun. Everything was so well-organized. Noteworthy is Tulga’s relationship with the tribe, which is an important consideration when we were planning this trip as we want to be as respectful as possible to the tribe for them not to feel uneasy during our stay. Our group was delighted to have raw and authentic Mongolian experience without having to sacrifice comfort – we had delicious food, great accommodation and comfortable transportation all throughout our trip – thanks to the incredible team of Nomadic Trails!

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1 : fly to ulgii and drive into the altai winderness.

You will take a flight today to Ulgii , the capital of Mongolia’s westernmost region, which is more than 1000 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar and situated in the breathtaking Altai Mountains. Meet our driver and take a transfer to the airport from your accommodation or another Ulaanbaatar spot of your choosing. You will be met at customs by our local guide, and you’ll have the opportunity to tour the town and eat meals. Kazakh culture predominates in Ulgii, where ethnic Kazakhs make up the bulk of the community. Take the Russian off-road vehicle for a 4-hour (100km) trip into the wilderness toward the Tavan Bogd National Park in the afternoon. Tonight you will set up camp towards the middle of the park, amidst the picturesque Altai Mountains .

Stay overnight camp in local ger. Lunch and dinner are included.

Impressive Mongolia Adventure Tour

Day 2: Travel To Tavan Bogd National Park And Meet Local Guides

Travel to the Altai Tavanbogd National Park after a filling camp-prepared breakfast. Today’s journey will take five hours and cover 150 kilometers, but the view is amazing, there will be picture opportunities, and there will also be a detour to check out an intriguing region with prehistoric rock drawings. The tent will be put up close to the gers of ethnic Tuvan people when we arrive at the National Park; they will supply the camels for tomorrow’s trip. There is a chance to go see them in their gers and discover more about their customs and lifestyle as nomads.

Tent camping at night. Our cook will make dinner, lunch, and breakfast.

Altai Tavanbogd National Park - Mongolia Adventure Tours

Day 3: Trek To Potanii Glacier

Start your climb into the Altai Mountains with the tour experts as once camels are packed with supplies and gear among the breathtaking scenery of the Tavan Bogd National Park. For the native Kazakhs, Tuvans, and Mongolians, the place is sacred. The walk today is 16 kilometers long, which, based on your own pace, may be completed in four hours. Arrive at the Potanii, Mongolia’s biggest glacier, have lunch, and then take a stroll on the ice. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Mt. Malchin, which we’ll climb the next day, from there. Return to the campground, which will be established just beyond the glacier’s edge, and stay overnight in your tents.

Overnight camping in tents. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be prepared by our cook.

Mongolia Adventure Tour

Day 4: Mount Malchin Summit

After a healthy breakfast, go out for a magnificent walk on Mount Malchin . A reasonably fit person can easily complete the 6-mile climb, yet it will take them around 4-5 hours to reach the summit since it is 4037m above sea level. Have a delicious meal, take in the panoramic view of the Altai Mountains from the peak, and return to your campsite in time to enjoy dinner.

altai-mountains-Mongolia Adventure Tours

Day 5 : Trek To Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain

The 20-kilometer hike today will be easier and shouldn’t take more than 5 hours, but that does not mean it won’t be as beautiful! These mountains are home to several wild creatures, including ibex and eagles, which you could spot. Travel in the sacred to the local nomads slopes of Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain in the early afternoon. The tent will be set up tonight close to one of the Tuvan nomadic families of herders that are typically camping in their gers in the valley below. You will get the chance to visit the family ger in the evenings and discover more about their traditions and way of life. Camp at a 2,500 m height next to the family campsite.

Tent camping at night. Our cook will make dinner, lunch, and breakfast – but the local nomads may also offer food for dinner.

Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain - Mongolia Adventure Tours

Day 6: Trekking To Khar Saraa Valley

After a hearty breakfast and coffee, we will begin the hike after traveling for 10 kilometers, traveling first by the UNESCO-listed. Khar Saraa Valley , which is home to several structures, deer stones, and old rock carvings that date back to the Paleolithic. Following visiting the area and having a meal, hike for a further two hours to arrive at the campground, which is 2450 meters above sea level and is located next to smaller lakes.

Mongolia Adventure Travel

Day 7 : Trekking To Baavgait Valley

Spending more time with your loved ones today and observing them taking care of their animals, milking their cows, or creating felt before starting the journey slightly later. So get your tents ready and head to Takhilt Pass , which is located at 3600 meters. The majority of this 7-kilometer trek is on ice, making it more challenging than the treks from the previous days. After completing the 10-kilometer descent to the charming. Baavgait Valley , where you’ll spend the night, enjoy lunch near the high pass.

Baavgait Valley - Mongolia Adventure Tours

Day 8-9: Trekking To Khoton Lake

On these two days, the route would be simpler and mostly through the beautiful landscapes and little glacial lakes of the area. You will go a little more than 30 kilometers in 2 days through a larch forest on the way to Khoton Lake. Arriving to Lake Khoton here on the second day in the early afternoon.

Impressive Mongolia Adventure Tour

Day 10: Visit Kazakh Eagle Hunter Family

Kazakh nomads spend their summer months camped out by Lake Khoton. Each morning, they trek a small distance to view one of the Kazakh households. You’ll note that the interior of Kazakh gers is larger and distinct from that of Mongolian or Tuvan gers. As you interact with your nomads hosts in the ger and discover more about their eagle hunting customs, approach. You will get the chance to take a traditional culinary class with your cooks in the lovely campground environment in the evening. You will be able to make Buuz (steamed dumplings) , Huushuur (fried meat-filled pastry) , and other Mongolian specialties.

Asilbek-and-his-son-eagle-hunting-next-generation-mongolia adventure tours

Day 11: Drive To Ulgii

You will meet your driver today and travel back to Ulgii via car. There will be a lunch stop along the road, maybe by some historical sites and deer stones. You will pass a few nomadic Kazakh and Tuva gers on the lengthy, rough trip, which is really picturesque. You could pause to look at the clothing and accessories for sale there. Later in the day, arrive at Ulgii Ger Camp , take a bath and have supper in the camp’s restaurant.

Ulgii ger camp for the night. Dinner, lunch, and breakfast are all included.

Impressive Mongolia Adventure Tour

Day 12: Fly To Ulaanbaatar

Travel to the nearby airport in the morning, then take a flight back to Ulaanbaatar. The aircraft takes off at 11 am and makes a stop along the way before landing at 3 pm. When you land, our driver will be there to meet you and take you to your accommodation or another location of your choosing.

Breakfast is included. Thank you for joining this Mongolia tour packages with Go Mongolia Tours!

When is the best time to visit Mongolia?

The best time to visit Mongolia largely depends on your interests and preferred activities. Mongolia experiences extreme continental weather, with hot summers and bitterly cold winters. Here's a breakdown of the seasons to help you plan your trip:

Summer (June to August):

  • Summer is the peak tourist season in Mongolia, with warm temperatures and longer daylight hours.
  • This is an ideal time for outdoor activities such as trekking, horseback riding, and exploring the vast steppe.
  • Naadam Festival, held in July, is a highlight of the summer season, featuring traditional Mongolian sports and cultural performances.

Autumn (September to October):

  • Autumn brings pleasant temperatures, cooler evenings, and stunning landscapes as the foliage turns golden.
  • It's a great time for photography enthusiasts to capture the vibrant colours and the changing scenery.
  • Nomadic families move their livestock to winter pastures during this time, providing a glimpse into the traditional herding lifestyle.

Winter (November to February):

  • Winter in Mongolia is extremely cold, with temperatures dropping well below freezing.
  • If you're prepared for the frigid temperatures, winter offers a unique experience, especially for those interested in winter activities like ice fishing, dog sledding, and witnessing the magnificent landscapes blanketed in snow.
  • The Ice Festival on Lake Khovsgol in February is a popular event, showcasing ice sculptures, ice-skating, and traditional games.

Spring (March to May):

  • Spring brings a gradual transition from winter to warmer weather, with melting snow and budding vegetation.
  • It's a good time to observe the awakening of nature and witness the birth of baby animals.
  • However, the weather can be unpredictable during spring, with occasional snowstorms and fluctuating temperatures.

Considering the diverse seasons and activities, the best time to visit Mongolia for most travelelrs is during the summer months of June to August when the weather is relatively warm and conducive to outdoor exploration. However, if you're seeking unique experiences like the Naadam Festival or winter activities, you may want to plan your visit accordingly.

Remember to pack appropriate clothing and gear for the specific season you choose to visit, as the weather conditions can be challenging, especially during winter.

Will I require a visa for my visit to Mongolia?

Yes, most visitors to Mongolia will require a visa to enter the country. However, the visa requirements may vary depending on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your stay. Here are some general guidelines:

Visa-free countries: Citizens of certain countries are exempt from obtaining a visa for a specified period. For example, citizens of Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, and many European Union countries can stay in Mongolia visa-free for up to 30 days. The duration and conditions of visa-free entry may vary, so it's essential to check with the Mongolian embassy or consulate in your home country for the most up-to-date information.

Tourist visa: If you are not eligible for visa-free entry, you will need to apply for a tourist visa. This typically allows you to stay in Mongolia for up to 30 days. The application process usually involves submitting a completed visa application form, a passport-sized photo, a valid passport with at least six months of validity, and a visa fee. You may also need to provide additional documents such as a travel itinerary, hotel reservations, and proof of travel insurance.

Visa extensions: If you wish to stay in Mongolia for a longer period, you can apply for a visa extension at the Mongolian Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar. Extensions are typically granted for up to 30 days, but they are subject to approval, and you may be required to provide a valid reason for the extension.

It's important to note that visa requirements can change, so it's advisable to check with the Mongolian embassy or consulate in your country well in advance of your planned visit. They will provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding visa requirements, application procedures, and any supporting documents that may be required.

Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Mongolia, and make sure to allow ample time for visa processing to avoid any last-minute complications.

What is the local currency in Mongolia, and can I use credit cards?

The local currency in Mongolia is the Mongolian Tugrik (MNT). When traveling to Mongolia, it is recommended to carry some cash in local currency for smaller expenses and places where credit cards may not be widely accepted, especially in rural areas. Here are some key points regarding currency and credit card usage in Mongolia:

Currency Exchange: It's advisable to exchange your currency into Mongolian Tugrik upon arrival in Mongolia. You can do so at the airport, local banks, or authorised exchange offices in major cities. It's recommended to exchange your money at reputable establishments to ensure fair rates.

Cash Usage: While cash is widely accepted in Mongolia, especially in local markets, smaller shops, and rural areas, it may be more challenging to use credit cards for day-to-day expenses. It's a good idea to have sufficient cash on hand for meals, transportation, and shopping in areas where card payment options may be limited.

Credit Card Usage: Credit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard, are generally accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and some retail stores in major cities like Ulaanbaatar. However, it's important to note that credit card acceptance may be less common in smaller towns, remote areas, and establishments catering to nomadic communities. It's advisable to carry cash as a backup in case of card payment issues or limited card acceptance.

ATM Availability: ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) are available in major cities and towns in Mongolia. They accept international debit and credit cards, allowing you to withdraw cash in local currency. However, it's important to inform your bank about your travel plans to ensure your cards are authorised for use in Mongolia. Do note that in remote or less populated areas, ATM availability may be limited, so it's best to withdraw cash in advance if you plan to travel to such regions.

Currency Exchange Tips: When exchanging currency or using ATMs, it's recommended to carry newer, clean, and undamaged banknotes, as older or damaged bills may not be accepted or may receive a lower exchange rate. It's also advisable to keep your currency exchange receipts, as they may be required when converting any remaining Mongolian Tugrik back to your home currency.

To ensure a hassle-free experience, it's always a good idea to carry a mix of cash and cards, informing your bank about your travel plans, and being prepared for situations where cash is the preferred payment method.

Will I require any vaccinations for my visit to Mongolia?

Before traveling to Mongolia, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine specialist to assess your specific health needs and vaccination requirements. They will consider factors such as your medical history, current health status, planned activities, and the duration of your stay in Mongolia. Here are some vaccinations commonly recommended for travellers to Mongolia:

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that you are up to date on routine vaccinations, including measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP), varicella (chickenpox), polio, and influenza. These vaccinations are generally recommended for all travellers regardless of their destination.

Hepatitis A and B: Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are recommended for travellers to Mongolia, as these diseases can be contracted through contaminated food or water, or through sexual contact or exposure to contaminated blood.

Typhoid: Typhoid vaccination is recommended, especially if you plan to travel outside major cities and may have limited access to clean and safe food and water.

Rabies: Mongolia has a moderate risk of rabies, particularly in rural areas. If you plan to spend time in rural or remote locations or engage in activities that may bring you into contact with animals, such as wildlife encounters or volunteering with animals, a rabies vaccination may be recommended.

Japanese Encephalitis: If you plan to visit Mongolia for an extended period, particularly during the summer months, or if your travel involves spending significant time in rural agricultural areas, a Japanese encephalitis vaccination may be advised.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis: If you plan to visit forested and rural areas in Mongolia, particularly during the warmer months, a tick-borne encephalitis vaccination may be recommended.

Remember that vaccination recommendations may change over time, so it is important to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine specialist well in advance of your trip to ensure you receive the appropriate vaccinations. Additionally, it's essential to take precautions to prevent illnesses during your trip, such as practicing good hand hygiene, drinking safe and clean water, and taking measures to avoid insect bites.

Is Mongolia a safe destination to visit?

Mongolia is generally considered a safe destination for travellers. The country has a relatively low crime rate, and violent crimes against tourists are rare. However, as with any travel destination, it's important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and well-being. Here are some tips to help you have a safe trip to Mongolia:

Personal Safety: Exercise common sense and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid displaying signs of wealth, and use secure transportation options.

Transportation Safety: When using public transportation or taxis, choose reputable companies and licensed drivers. Ensure that vehicles are in good condition and follow basic safety practices such as wearing seatbelts.

Nature and Outdoor Safety: Mongolia's vast landscapes offer incredible outdoor adventures, but it's crucial to be well-prepared and informed when venturing into remote areas. Take necessary precautions, have proper equipment, and inform others about your travel plans. Be aware of weather conditions, potential hazards, and wildlife encounters.

Cultural Sensitivity: Respect local customs, traditions, and cultural norms. Mongolians are generally friendly and hospitable, so it's important to be polite, observe local customs, and seek permission before photographing individuals or religious sites.

Health and Hygiene: Prioritise your health and well-being by practicing good hygiene, including frequent hand washing and consuming safe and clean food and water. It's also recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses and emergency evacuation.

Outdoor Adventures: If you plan on engaging in outdoor activities such as trekking, horseback riding, or camping, consider going with reputable tour operators who have experienced guides and adhere to safety standards.

Wildlife Safety: Mongolia is home to unique wildlife, including endangered species. Maintain a safe distance and avoid approaching or feeding wild animals. If participating in activities like horseback riding or camel riding, ensure that the animals are treated well and not overworked.

It's important to stay updated on travel advisories and consult official government sources for the latest information on safety and security in Mongolia before your trip. Taking precautions, using common sense, and being respectful of local customs will greatly contribute to a safe and enjoyable travel experience in Mongolia.

What is the food like in Mongolia?

Mongolian cuisine reflects the nomadic lifestyle and cultural heritage of the country. Traditional Mongolian food is hearty, flavourful, and often centred around meat and dairy products, as livestock farming plays a significant role in the country's economy and culture. Here are some highlights of Mongolian cuisine:

Meat Dishes: Mongolia is renowned for its meat dishes, particularly featuring beef, lamb, and mutton. One of the most iconic Mongolian dishes is "Buur" or "Buurul," which is a type of dumpling filled with meat and steamed. Other popular meat dishes include "Khuushuur" (fried meat pastry), "Khorkhog" (meat and vegetable stew cooked in a metal pot with hot stones), and "Bantan" (meat and vegetable soup).

Dairy Products: As a country with a strong nomadic tradition, dairy products hold a special place in Mongolian cuisine. "Aaruul" is a traditional dried curd made from cow's, goat's, or sheep's milk, which is often enjoyed as a snack or dessert. "Byaslag" is a cheese made from yak's or cow's milk, and "Airag" is a fermented mare's milk that is slightly alcoholic and a staple during summer festivals.

Dumplings and Noodles: Dumplings, known as "Bansh" or "Buz," are a popular food in Mongolia. They are typically filled with minced meat and served with a dipping sauce. Noodles, both hand-pulled and wheat-based, are also commonly consumed and can be found in soups and stir-fried dishes.

Tsuivan: Tsuivan is a traditional Mongolian stir-fried noodle dish that combines sliced meat (often beef or mutton), vegetables, and handmade noodles. It is typically seasoned with spices and soy sauce, resulting in a savory and satisfying meal.

Soups and Stews: Mongolian soups and stews are hearty and nourishing. "Guriltai Shul" is a popular meat and vegetable soup, while "Boodog" is a unique cooking method where the meat, usually marmot or goat, is prepared by placing hot stones inside the carcass, resulting in a roasted and flavorful dish.

Snacks and Sweets: Mongolians enjoy various snacks and sweets. "Borts" is a type of dried meat, often made from beef or lamb, that serves as a portable and high-energy snack. "Boortsog" is a fried dough snack similar to biscuits or cookies, often enjoyed with tea. "Suutei Tsai" is a traditional salty milk tea that is consumed throughout the day.

Vegetarian and vegan options can be more limited in Mongolia, as the cuisine heavily emphasizes meat and dairy products. However, in larger cities like Ulaanbaatar, you can find restaurants and cafes that offer a wider range of international cuisines, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Exploring Mongolian cuisine offers a glimpse into the country's nomadic heritage and provides a unique culinary experience for visitors. Whether you try traditional meat dishes, dairy products, or indulge in local snacks, Mongolian food offers a hearty and distinct taste that reflects the country's cultural identity.

Can I drink the tap water in Mongolia?

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in Mongolia. While the water in some urban areas, especially in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, may be treated and safe to drink, it's still advisable for visitors to err on the side of caution and consume bottled water or use other safe water alternatives.

When traveling in Mongolia, it's best to rely on commercially bottled water, which is widely available in stores and supermarkets. Look for sealed bottles and check the expiration date to ensure freshness. It's also a good idea to carry a reusable water bottle and fill it with purified or boiled water when available.

If you find yourself in a situation where bottled water is not readily accessible, you can use water purification methods such as boiling, using water purification tablets, or using a water filter to make tap water safe for consumption. These precautions will help reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and ensure your health and well-being during your trip.

Additionally, when dining out, it's advisable to exercise caution with ice cubes and raw fruits and vegetables that may have been washed with tap water. Opt for peeled fruits, well-cooked meals, and hot beverages from trusted establishments to minimise the risk of foodborne illnesses.

By taking these precautions and being mindful of the water you consume, you can enjoy a safe and healthy trip to Mongolia.

Are there any cultural norms in Mongolia? I should follow?

Yes, Mongolia has its own set of cultural norms and customs that visitors should be aware of and respect. Here are some key cultural norms in Mongolia:

Greetings and Respect: Mongolians value respect and hospitality. When meeting someone for the first time, it is customary to greet them with a firm handshake. When greeting elders or people of higher social status, it is polite to extend your right arm while supporting your right elbow with your left hand. Avoid addressing people by their first names unless given permission or in a casual setting.

Etiquette in Ger (Yurt): If you have the opportunity to visit a traditional Mongolian ger, or yurt, it is important to follow proper etiquette. When entering a ger, it is customary to step over the threshold with your right foot and avoid stepping on the threshold itself. Inside the ger, it is polite to sit on the left side, as the right side is reserved for the head of the household. Show respect for the ger by refraining from pointing your feet towards the fireplace, as it is considered disrespectful.

Gift-Giving: Mongolians appreciate the gesture of gift-giving, especially when visiting someone's home. It is customary to bring a small gift such as sweets, tea, or a souvenir from your home country. When presenting a gift, use both hands as a sign of respect.

Dining Etiquette: Mongolian dining customs are rooted in their nomadic heritage. When invited to a Mongolian meal, it is customary to remove your shoes before entering the home or ger. Wait to be seated and follow the lead of the host or eldest person present. Mongolian meals often involve sharing dishes, so it is polite to wait for the host to start eating before you begin. Accepting food and drink offerings with both hands is a sign of respect. It is considered polite to try a bit of everything offered to you.

Dress Code: Mongolians tend to dress modestly and conservatively. When visiting religious sites or attending formal events, it is appropriate to dress more formally. It is advisable to dress in layers as the weather in Mongolia can vary greatly, especially in rural areas.

Photography: When taking photographs of people, especially locals, it is respectful to ask for permission first. Some individuals, particularly those engaged in traditional or religious activities, may prefer not to be photographed. Respect their wishes and refrain from taking photos without permission.

By respecting these cultural norms and showing an appreciation for Mongolian customs, you can enhance your interactions with the locals, foster positive connections, and have a more meaningful and enjoyable experience in Mongolia.

What should I pack for my trip to Mongolia?

When packing for your trip to Mongolia, it's important to consider the diverse landscapes, varying weather conditions, and cultural aspects of the country. Here's a list of essential items to pack:

  • Layered clothing: Mongolia experiences significant temperature fluctuations, so pack lightweight, breathable layers that can be easily added or removed.
  • Warm outerwear: Include a waterproof and windproof jacket, fleece or insulated jacket, and a hat or beanie for colder weather.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots: Choose sturdy footwear suitable for various terrains and activities.
  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirts: These will protect you from the sun, insects, and harsh vegetation.
  • Swimsuit: If you plan to visit hot springs or enjoy water activities in summer.
  • Scarf or shawl: Useful for protection from dust, wind, or as a modest covering when visiting religious sites.

Travel Essentials:

  • Travel adapter: Mongolia uses Type C and E sockets, so bring the appropriate adapter if necessary.
  • Portable charger: Keep your electronic devices powered during outdoor activities or when electricity is limited.
  • Travel-sized toiletries: Carry items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitiser, and wet wipes.
  • Prescription medications: If you have any specific medical needs, bring an ample supply of necessary medications.
  • First aid kit: Include basic medical supplies such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
  • Travel documents: Carry your passport, visa, travel insurance details, and copies of important documents in a secure and easily accessible place.

Outdoor Gear:

  • Daypack: A small backpack for day trips or hikes to carry water, snacks, camera, and other essentials.
  • Water bottle: Carry a reusable water bottle for staying hydrated during your travels.
  • Sunglasses and hat: Protect yourself from the strong sun, especially in the Gobi Desert.
  • Binoculars: Useful for wildlife spotting and enjoying the vast landscapes of Mongolia.

Miscellaneous:

  • Cash: Carry enough local currency (Mongolian Tugrik) for smaller establishments and remote areas where card payments may not be accepted.
  • Language guidebook or app: English is not widely spoken outside major cities, so having a basic Mongolian language guide can be helpful.
  • Travel locks: Keep your belongings secure, especially when staying in shared accommodations.
  • Snacks: Pack some non-perishable snacks for long journeys or when food options are limited.

Remember to pack according to the season and activities you plan to engage in. Check the weather forecast for your travel dates and consult with your tour operator or local resources for specific packing recommendations based on your itinerary.

By packing smartly and being prepared for different weather conditions and cultural experiences, you can make the most of your trip to Mongolia and enjoy a comfortable and enjoyable adventure.

What is the golden eagle festival of Mongolia?

The Golden Eagle Festival is an annual cultural event held in Mongolia, showcasing the rich tradition of eagle hunting practiced by the Kazakh ethnic minority. It is a fascinating celebration of the bond between humans and eagles, as well as a showcase of the unique nomadic culture of Mongolia. Here's an overview of the Golden Eagle Festival:

History and Significance: The festival originated as a way for the Kazakh eagle hunters, known as "berkutchi," to demonstrate their hunting skills and honour the cultural heritage of their ancestors. It has grown in popularity and now attracts both locals and international visitors who are captivated by this unique spectacle.

Dates and Location: The festival takes place annually in October in the remote and picturesque Bayan-Ölgii Province in western Mongolia. The region is known for its rugged landscapes, vast steppe, and snow-capped mountains, providing a stunning backdrop for the festival.

Eagle Hunting Competitions: The highlight of the festival is the eagle hunting competitions, where skilled hunters showcase their expertise and the agility of their trained golden eagles. The competitions typically include events such as speed and accuracy tests, as well as displays of the birds' hunting skills by capturing prey.

Cultural Performances and Exhibitions: The festival offers a glimpse into the Kazakh nomadic culture through various cultural performances and exhibitions. Visitors can witness traditional music and dance performances, participate in traditional games and sports, and explore the vibrant local crafts and artworks.

Traditional Costumes and Parades: The festival provides an opportunity to admire the colourful and ornate traditional costumes worn by the eagle hunters and their families. There are parades and ceremonies where participants showcase their attire, creating a visually stunning display of cultural pride.

Photography Opportunities: The Golden Eagle Festival offers incredible opportunities for photography enthusiasts. The sight of majestic golden eagles perched on the hunters' arms against the backdrop of Mongolia's breathtaking landscapes makes for stunning and memorable images.

Attending the Golden Eagle Festival allows visitors to witness a centuries-old tradition, immerse themselves in Mongolian nomadic culture, and gain insights into the unique bond between humans and eagles. It's an extraordinary experience that showcases the country's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

What language is spoken in Mongolia?

The official language of Mongolia is Mongolian. Mongolian belongs to the Mongolic language family and is the native language of the majority of the population. Mongolian is written using the Cyrillic script, which was adopted in the 1940s.

In addition to Mongolian, there are also other languages spoken in Mongolia due to its diverse ethnic composition. One notable language is Kazakh, spoken by the Kazakh ethnic minority, particularly in the western province of Bayan-Ölgii. Kazakh is a Turkic language and has its own distinct script.

English is gaining popularity in Mongolia, particularly in urban areas and among younger generations. In major cities and tourist areas, you can find some English speakers, especially in hotels, tourist establishments, and among those involved in the tourism industry. However, outside of these areas, English proficiency may be limited.

It can be beneficial to learn a few basic Mongolian phrases and greetings to facilitate communication and show respect for the local culture. The effort to learn a few words of the local language is often appreciated by Mongolians and can help enhance your interactions during your visit to Mongolia.

Customer review.

My family and I spent a week travelling with Meg through the Gobi desert – we bumped in our little van across the vast terrain between the Gers where we stopped to stay the night and experience our nomadic hosts’ great hospitality. We saw the Red Cliffs, the Singing Sand Dunes, the Vultures Canyon, and much more. We were fed well and catered for in every way. Beyond all that, however, we also made great friends with Meg and with our driver, so that we left the trip with more than just memories. A great experience.

mongolia adventure tour

My 3-day tour in September was amazing, and I can’t say enough good things about Mongolia or Meg’s Adventure Tours. Our guide was great, full of interesting history and anecdotes about the places we visited. We had a lot of special experiences and encounters that I believe were due to the relationships that Meg and her team have formed with communities over the years. And Mongolia is phenomenally beautiful, and the people friendly and kind. I would love to go back and spend 3 weeks, because 3 days was not enough.

mongolia adventure tour

I spent a couple of nights at Meg’s Guesthouse and three days on a custom tour. It would be hard to say enough good things about the tour. I only regret that we didn’t make it a four-day tour, because we had a day to spare. Mongolia is a beautiful place, and our English-speaking guide did a great job of showing us a small part of it. Meg did the planning herself, and conceived an excellent program given the constraints we gave her. Our tour included everything promised, plus many small comforts and kindnesses along the way. My traveling companion and I had such a great time that we’re already planning a return trip, most likely with another friend or two who heard our stories and want to experience Meg’s Adventure Tours (and Mongolia) themselves.

I took a 9 day trip through central/northwest Mongolia organize by Meg and surfed with her for 2 days. Everything worked out perfectly on the trip and it cost way less than anyone else. I’ve heard so many horror stories from other travelers in Mongolia and I’m happy to report that none of the things that happened to them (on account of shitty tour operators) happened to me. I would definitely recommend Meg if you’re looking for someone to arrange a trip in Mongolia for you.

“Personal touch” You can trust that Meg will give the best service. This is where I would recommend anyone visiting Ulaanbaatar to stay. Its a hard city to find decent accommodation, especially at a decent price. In addition to her amazing accommodation, she runs incredible trips. I had the most amazing trip with Meg. We went all around the Gobi, saw incredible sights. Meg has this incredible way of disarming people. She walked into Gers and made everyone feel comfortable and at home. The food was outstanding and Meg was accommodating of any requests we had. I can’t wait to do another trip with her. Gabrielle Clover, traveled with friends.

Thank you for an amazing six-day tour of the Gobi Meg. We all had a great time – the driver and van were great, the beautiful places superb, guide was fantastic and the people we met were awesome. I can’t thank you enough. I will be in touch for more tours and adventures.

I first contacted Meg to help with the logistics of photographing for a book about Mongolian nomads that would take me all over the country. I wanted to find a guide who had experience and connections within herding communities and could put together custom itineraries. Meg did a fantastic job putting together a number of excursions into the countryside that summer, and I’ve continued to work with her on a number of subsequent trips since.
