The most romantic places in the world
1. Montreal, Canada
Swoon. There’s something about magical Montreal that really sets it apart from other cities in North America, something that screams ‘romance’ and promises to never let go. It could be the curious combination of Canadian confidence and European elegance, or it could be the tangible history that sparkles from every corner of the city’s historic heart. In truth, it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as whatever ‘it’ is keeps on shining. Seek out one of the many rooftop bars in the Old Town and soak it all in.

2. Venice, Italy
You knew Venice would pop up in this list somewhere. No city on the planet encapsulates the idyllic concept of romance quite like Venetian capital. Beauty lurks around every corner here, from sunrise to sunset and beyond, with narrow canals and Renaissance architecture transporting visitors to a rose-tinted wonderland. The romantic restaurants don’t hurt, while the many, many bridges seem tailor-made for proclamations of passion. All this without mentioning the inherent romance of a gondola ride? Venice is a city for lovers, old and young.

Ah, Marrakech. The colours, the smells, the sounds, the sights. This is the sort of place that reawakens the senses; a cacophony of excitement that manages to be forthright and wistful all at the same time. Marrakech is a dizzying destination that is perfect for the passionate, but it also happens to be known as the City of Luxury, with all the ornate palaces and life-giving spa and wellness options anyone could need.

4. Kyoto, Japan
Tokyo’s vast urban sprawl might catch most of the crowds, but if you’re looking for a Japanese city for romance, Kyoto is your best bet. Japan’s historic and cultural capital, Kyoto’s choc-full of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, traditional ryokan and stately gardens. But it’s more than just history: the food is some of Japan’s finest, the people are welcoming and the scenery, in a bowl of mountains, is spectacular. This is Japan at its most romantic – it's no wonder Kyoto has become such a proposal hotspot in recent years.

5. Prague, Czech Republic
The City of a Hundred Spires seems to have been built with romance in mind. Can there be a more loved-up moment than looking over the Czech capital from Letna Hill, a beer in one hand and your beloved in the other? Prague is a city of stories, a famous old wonder that has inspired authors and artists for centuries and will continue to do so as the years fly by. The Old Town gets most of the attention, but don’t be afraid to explore further afield; each district has its own unique feel, from the modern stylings of Karlin to the grandeur of Vinohrady and beyond.

6. Zanzibar, Tanzania
Zanzibar’s dazzling beaches have long made it a popular honeymoon destination, but there is more to the island than the natural beauty of where sand meets sea meets sun. Traditions are important here, and that makes for a more sedate pace of life in the very best way. Zanzibar is a place where couples can step back and fall in love with what they have all over again, complete with shimmering coral reefs and all the spices the palate can handle.
7. Niagara Falls, Canada/USA
The Honeymoon capital of the world? That’ll be Niagara Falls. The world’s most famous waterfall is a take-your-breath-away sight if ever there was one, and isn’t that one of the great experiences of love? The thrilling moments of realisation that this person is the one, the sort of experience that always hits different when backed by 3,160 tons of water rushing by every single second. It might not be the most original of honeymoon spots, but who cares about originality? After all, it’s the heart we’re talking about.

8. Herzegovina
With the heart in its name and wine flowing from every corner, Herzegovina remains one of Europe’s final hidden treasures. The use of the word ‘hidden’ isn’t entirely accurate, of course, as any summertime visitor to Mostar, Kravice Waterfalls or Medjugorje will attest, but the passionate southern portion of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a beautiful region filled with romance-friendly adventures for lovers of all shapes and sizes. From exploring wild rivers by kayak to the shimmering allure of the Tekija in Blagaj, Herzegovina is a destination defined by the heart. If the sight of Počitelj doesn’t make you fall head over heels in love, you might want to check your pulse.
9. Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An’s famous lantern-lined streets are an idyllic spot for twilight walks and candid conversations, backed by well-preserved historic Vietnamese architecture that tells plenty of stories. The town’s lantern boat rides are the thing of romantic dreams – a tremendous combination of natural delicacy and impressive confidence – while Hoi An also has one of the best cocktail scenes in the country.

10. Iceland
Iceland can feel like another world: one filled with thrilling geysers, moon-like craters and the achingly gorgeous Aurora Borealis. There’s nowhere quite like it, and it’s that unique atmosphere that brings lovers here in search of something special. The eccentric side of capital Reykjavik is also plenty romantic in its own right.
📍 Discover the best things to do in Iceland
11. Lake Malawi
Tanzania calls it Lake Nyasa and Mozambique refers to it as Lago Niassa, but the body of water known commonly as Lake Malawi is an absolute stunner, no matter what you call it. One of Africa’s Great Lakes, the shores of the water are lined with gorgeous lodges that make the perfect romantic getaway. The paradise-like Nkwichi Lodge stands out; it’s a secluded slice of serenity in a quite incredible part of the world.
12. Paris, France
Is it possible to put together a selection of the world’s most romantic cities without mentioning Paris? Is it even legal? We’re not taking any chances, and the City of Love remains as alluring today as it has been at every stage of its history. That nickname isn’t for marketing purposes, by the way; the French capital buzzes with romantic confidence that might convince you that love was first discovered here.

13. Maldives
Much like a few other places on this list, the key to understanding why the Maldives is so romantic involves nothing more than looking at it. Is there a more gorgeous spot on the planet? That comes down to preference, beauty being in the eye of the beholder and whatnot, but it’s difficult to argue against the crisp white sands and cerulean seas, especially when you find yourself snorkelling in the latter and watching blood-orange sunsets from the former.

14. Las Vegas, USA
Okay, the tongue is firmly in the cheek here, but there must be something about Vegas that convinces couples to get married on a whim, right? It might be the excitement, it might be the devil-may-care attitude of the place, but it could also be that the bright lights bring out the naive romance in even the most hardened of hearts. The City of Lights turns into a dream once the sun goes down, and there is more for couples to do here than while a night away on slot machines and cards. If getting married seems like a good idea while in Vegas, so be it. You can deal with the consequences in the morning.

15. Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia has built an entire tourist industry off being the only country with ‘love’ in its name, so it stands to reason that its picture-perfect capital has a name that loosely translates as ‘beloved’. Ljubljana is an alluring collection of narrow streets and grand architecture made for strolling hand in hand, while the splendour of nearby Lake Bled almost speaks for itself. Ljubljana also does a fine line in romantic restaurants, from the skyscraper views of Nebotičnik to the old fashioned charm of Marley and Me .

16. Hawaii, USA
The place where tropical dreams come true. Hawaii has long been seen as a utopia among travellers, and they aren’t a million miles away from the truth. After all, the Aloha State is often used as a byword for paradise, and visitors will find endless sandy stretches accentuated by some of the most verdant scenery imaginable. The whole thing is brimming with potential romantic adventures, from watching the sun rise in Haleakela to seeing it set on Kauai .

17. Greenland
Like Iceland, but green. Wait, no, like Iceland but icy? Yes, Greenland was so named as to attract people to go and settle there, so you can only imagine the would-be settlers’ shock at the icy tundra they arrived in. If that doesn’t sound too romantic, get ready to have your expectations blown out of the (frozen) water. Greenland is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet and as such carries an inherent air of authenticity, the sort of atmosphere that brings feelings to the surface and puts life into perspective. It is shatteringly beautiful, constantly surprising and occasionally difficult. A lot like love, really.
18. Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Several of our choices have focused on the serenity and tranquillity offered up by beaches. And, well, it doesn’t get any better than this. Bora Bora is as close to paradise as you’re going to find; it’s a stunningly isolated island in French Polynesia that will make couples feel as though the entire world has stopped – maybe even because of their love. It hasn’t, obviously, but the seclusion and beauty offered by Bora Bora make it a romantic favourite all year round.
19. Udaipur, India
Rajasthan’s Udaipur is often s ingled out as the most romantic place in India . Royal grace seems to shine from every corner, and the combination of shimmering lakes and incredible food make it a magnet for couples looking for something special. Lisbon is for lovers, and lovers will find themselves wide-eyed in wonder at the gorgeous mixture of history and culture that informs the city streets. Nestled above and along the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec City is arguably the most romantic city in all of Canada. Couples will appreciate the beauty of the French-speaking destination that dates back to 1608. One of the most beloved areas of Quebec City is the Historic District of Old Quebec, known for its stone townhomes, cobblestone streets, and colonial architecture. The UNESCO World Heritage Site and Quartier Petit Champlain are both perfect pockets of the city for an evening stroll after dinner. For natural sights, Montmorency Falls is also a short 15-minute car ride outside of Quebec City center.

No matter how many trips you have taken while you were single, there is something special — and beautiful — about traveling with someone you're head over heels about. Not only can you finally rest your head on the plane mate beside you, but you now have a partner with whom to explore the most romantic places in the world, and — ahem — finally put that "do not disturb" sign to use.
While happy couples will see any corner of the planet through rose-colored glasses, there are certain destinations that lend themselves to romance. From a beach excursion where no shoes or shirt are required (we're looking at you, Seychelles) to a city that twinkles under the glow of street lamps (bonjour, Paris), there are many charming spots to consider.
Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, jetting off on your honeymoon, or merely seeking a getaway built for two, plan your trip with our list of the most romantic places in the world.
1. Paris, France
2. bora bora, french polynesia, 3. venice, italy, 4. the maldives, 5. santorini, greece, 6. krabi, thailand, 7. sabi sands game reserve, south africa, 8. turks and caicos, 9. the seychelles, 10. maui, hawaii, usa, 11. masai mara, kenya, 12. amalfi coast, italy, 13. big sur, california, 14. bali, indonesia, 15. aspen, colorado, usa, 16. florence, italy, 17. savannah, georgia, 18. kyoto, japan, 19. québec city, canada, 20. santiago, chile, 21. the berkshires, new england, usa, map of the most romantic places in the world.
Is any romantic roundup complete without singing the praises of the City of Lights? As the capital of France, there's a reason so many couples seek the ambience and energy of this Parisian destination. When you wander about this European city, you'll find yourselves mesmerized by idyllic coffee shops, picture-perfect cobblestone streets, and the scent of freshly-baked-everything perfuming the air. Cue collective dreamy sigh.
You can spend your days exploring the many iconic love-drenched landmarks—from the infamous Eiffel Tower to the Pont Des Arts bridge outside of Notre Dame . And at night? Snuggle up in an AirBNB or dig deep into your pocketbooks for a stay at one of the most luxurious and sophisticated resorts on the planet.
If you happen to visit Paris in spring, summer, or fall, consider renting bikes as your mode of transportation — complete with a baguette for your basket. Or in the winter, sneak in a kiss (or three) as you tour through the many museums , all featuring classic and modern themes.

Romance and Bora Bora match as perfectly as the turquoise and azure water of the lagoon surrounding this magical island in the South Pacific. One of the most coveted honeymoon destinations in the world, Bora Bora's beauty is unmatched.
Beyond the calm, clear lagoon with colors defy description, Bora Bora is home to brilliant white sand beaches ringing an interior featuring towering volcanic peaks and lush foliage. Activities include romantic dining, couples massage, and snorkeling around the lagoon reefs. There is also excellent diving opportunities.
The resorts here were designed with romance in mind, and you'll want to book an overwater bungalow to sleep in a stilted villa over the ocean. You'll find resorts on the mainland and on private motus (islets) in the lagoon.
To reach Bora Bora, it's an 8-hour flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Tahiti, where the international airport is located, and then a quick one-hour flight onwards to paradise.
There's a saying that you either love or hate Venice when you visit this romantic northern Italy city. But our guess is if you go when you're feeling butterflies, The City of Water will have them swarming.
Even for the well-versed traveler, Venice presents an entirely new experience, since it is the capital of the Veneto region, comprised of 100 tiny islands. Here, there are very few roads, but many canals, making a gondola ride with your main squeeze a must.
As you stroll hand-in-hand across romantic bridges (don't miss the Rialto Bridge , a marvel of engineering), soaking up the undeniably hospitable Italian culture, you'll witness nods to the Renaissance era, as well as Gothic landmarks.
Nibble your way through St. Mark's Square , where local vendors display their handmade goods. Hold tight to your food, though, as hundreds of pigeons swarm this area in search of tasty treats.
For an Instagram-worthy photo op, scale to the top of the Campanile Bell Tower , offering quite the view. If you're traveling for a milestone, take a boat to the glass-blowing region on Murano Island and take home a keepsake.

While images of this one-of-a-kind tropical nation might not come up if you Google "romance," it is definitely what comes to mind when you dream of the picture-perfect honeymoon spot. This luxurious destination in the Indian Ocean has a unique landscape, with 26 circular micro islands woven together. No wonder it's been rated one of the most beautiful islands in the world .
Most couples will splurge on the infamous overwater bungalows with an expansive balcony and transparent floors that allow the sea to illuminate your room.
In addition to some of the most impressive — and beautiful — beaches in the world, snorkeling duos will enjoy exploring reefs and sea life of every shape and size.
For couples who enjoy experiencing local culture as part of their adventure, consider spending a day in the capital of Male , where you can watch a local fish market at work and shop for artisan goods on the main street of Majeedhee Magu.
Looking to get hitched during winter? The Maldives are one of the best honeymoon destinations in January .

As one of the most popular honeymoon destinations on the planet, and one of the most beautiful Greek Islands , Santorini might require a long plane ride and a puddle jumper flight, but trust us, it is worth the journey. Blue-domed houses so white, they sparkle are a treat to behold, while the twinkling azure Aegean Sea beckons travelers in the distance.
This picturesque sea is the main reason many newlyweds choose Santorini. In addition to its ability to cool off even the most overheated of travelers, this watery haven offers captivatingly pink, orange, and golden sunsets best viewed from the town of Oia . It's still utterly romantic, but you won't be the only ones enjoying Mother Nature's fantastic nightly display — Oia gets packed at sunset, no matter the season.
Many of Santorini's boutiques, restaurants, and resorts are built into the jagged cliff sides, giving couples the chance to book a unique private escape for their trip. While walking through town, don't be surprised if you end up on someone's roof.
In addition to walking through narrow — and often steep — streets to catch a glimpse of the iconic white skyline, it's also recommended to rent a car for your trip. Though you can hire a taxi service, many duos prefer the independence of scaling the island on their own, giving them the ability to stop for a photo — or a romp — when the mood strikes.
If you're feeling more adventurous, rent a scooter. There's little more romantic than holding on to your partner as you wind your way along the scenic roadways.

Thanks to an unbelievable shade of blue water, the low cost of aromatic and flavorful food, and dreamy beaches , many jet-setters make a point to visit the romantic beach resorts of Thailand.
There are dozens gorgeous places to choose from in Krabi province. Head out to the best islands in Krabi and disconnect on a quiet trip or visit the bustling streets and beaches of Phuket .
Located in the southern area of the west coast of the country, you'll find mangroves, limestone formations, boulders, and many other works of wonder from Mother Nature herself.
You can book a long-tail boat to take you to Railay Beach or go on a snorkeling tour to see colorful creatures of the sea. For a bit of a splurge, you can stay at five-star resorts, most of which come complete with beach access and a private pool for lounging.
Finally finding someone you could imagine sharing your life with feels like sourcing a diamond in the rough, a four-leaf clover—or well, seeing a leopard in a tree.
Going on a safari in South Africa is one of those bucket list items that everyone dreams of, and there's no better person to share the immense wonder of the African bush with than your partner.
Though you can drive yourself through the legendary Kruger National Park , a more romantic option is staying at a game lodge in the exemplary Sabi Sands Game Reserve, where many luxury resorts offer couple experiences you never imagined possible.
You can wake up with a view of giraffes and zebras at a watering hole and end your day with an evening drive spotting the Big 5. Before you head back to your bungalow, you can cuddle in awe of the cascade of stars and constellations that shine above you and marvel at the universe that brought you together.

Boasting some of the most beautiful hued water in the Caribbean and one of the world's most gorgeous beaches , Turks and Caicos is a dreamy, romantic destination for couples seeking a tropical getaway that's easily accessible from North America. It's also a perfect choice if you want to see a part of the Caribbean still void of mega all-inclusive resorts.
The vibe here is all about the natural beauty and tranquility. From calm, clear water to the clarity of the sand and colorful sunsets, this is an island getaway that encourages long romantic walks on the beach followed by leisurely dinners at excellent restaurants. There is also fabulous snorkeling, diving, and bone fishing in the glassy sea.
Providenciales is the main island that tourists visit . It is one of eight inhabited islands in the Turks and Caicos string of 40 islands. Here you'll find stunning Grace Bay Beach, which is consistently ranked one of the world's best. Running for 12-miles, it has great snorkeling just offshore in a thriving reef.
You'll also find many of the most romantic resorts here. Unlike the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos doesn't cater to mass market resorts. Instead, you'll find truly luxe accommodation in smaller properties that have more intimate vibes, which is another perk if you just want to spend time with your partner.
It's impossible to fall out of love while vacationing in the Seychelles. One of the most romantic destinations on the planet, this 115-island archipelago sits serenely in the Indian Ocean, about 1,800 kilometers off Africa's east coast.
The region's magnificent scenery caresses its visitors, intriguing them to snorkel in the crystal-clear water, trek through the jungle, and climb over dramatic volcanic boulders.
Mahé is the largest Seychellois island, offering a slew of hotel, restaurant, and shopping choices at all price points, but it's the small, private isles that really bring on the romance.
In addition to pristine beaches and water so warm and clean, you could swim and snorkel in it all day, many of these lavish islands are home to their own upscale resorts.
The Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa , for instance, occupies a large chunk of the tranquil Silhouette Island, meaning guests have private access to everything from volcanic beaches to rainforest pathways, and jungle treks. The only other inhabitants on this isle live in a tiny, historic fishing village located near the main dock.
If you're American, there's no passport required for this romantic hub, but you might feel as if you went to another country when you catch a glimpse of the truly remarkable beauty of Hawaii.
While there are dozens of islands to navigate — from Oahu to Kauai — if you want to wear those head-over-heels rose-colored glasses, set your sights on Maui. In addition to some dreamy luxury resorts, the varied landscape of this Hawaiian island sets it apart from its neighbors. The beaches are so glorious, you won't want to leave.
Couples can drive along the picturesque Hana Highway and explore the Haleakala National Park , including the volcano it's named after. And since most amorous vacations require a beach day, there are 30 miles of sand to set up shop on.
Make sure you save time to fall asleep under the dazzling stars and constellations that bring light to the midnight sky.

If your idea of a romantic getaway involves watching cheetahs stalk prey across the savannah, snapping photos of baby lions playing (they look like puppies, FYI), or witnessing an elephant family drinking from a watering hole as the sun sinks low on the horizon and turns the sky into an explosion of colors, then you need to book a trip to Kenya's Masai Mara.
The country's premier safari destination is uber romantic. Home to all of Africa's most famous animals, it is also where the Great Migration takes place each year starting in July or August . There are numerous safari lodges for all budgets of travelers. But for a special trip, you'll want to stay at Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp.
The place looks like you stepped back in time to the 1920s. Everything from the birdcage chandeliers and gramophones in the main tent where dinner is served to the al fresco bubble baths set up outside your luxurious canvas sleeping abodes upon request a replica of what safari camps looked like a century ago – minus the fact that you no longer hunt the animals, but instead photograph them. It is about as yesteryear romantic as you can get.
Imagine this, if you will: canoodling with your number one and snapping a sunset selfie as you overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea from your cliffside villa in Italy. If that sounds just about perfect, the Amalfi Coast is an ideal spot for your next holiday-for-two.
While this area of the Campania region is only 50 kilometers long, it lures many tourists thanks to its captivating beauty, fresh seafood, and photo-worthy panoramic views.
You and your partner can navigate narrow roads and alleys; stop by fishing villages; tour clifftop villas; or spend the day on the gorgeous beach , soaking up the vitamin D, and the warmth of the Italians.
Multiple stunning villages, or "pearls of the Amalfi," as they are sometimes called, are scattered along the rugged Amalfi Coast. Positano is arguably the most beautiful, while Amalfi is considered the main heart of this breathtaking region. From here, grab a ferry to Capri to up your romance factor even higher.
Other must-sees include Ravello , Atrani , Maiori , and Vietri sul Mare .

With wild ocean views from craggy cliffs, fine dining, small luxury resorts, and excellent hiking, California's Big Sur is one of the state's most romantic destinations. It's the perfect spot for a destination wedding, an elopement, honeymoon, or just a weekend getaway with the person you love.
Located about three hours south of San Francisco and five hours north of Los Angeles along one of California's most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline, Big Sur is also a perfect romantic destination for couples seeking some digital detox time. Cell phone reception is spotty here and some of the hotels don't have TVs in the rooms.
But that is okay, because this is a destination you visit to commune with nature and your loved one. Take a walk through the woods or along the beach and just soak up the magic of this special place. When it comes to lodging, one of the most romantic options is the Post Ranch Inn .
The luxury property isn't cheap, but for a special occasion, worth the price. The service is impeccable as is the cliffside location. Take a dip in one of the two infinity pools as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. They are heated to Jacuzzi-like temperatures.

Ahh, Québec City, how we love you. Canada's city de l'amour, this French-speaking ville is about as romantic as you can get outside of Europe. It's overlooked by the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac , which stands stoically atop a steep cliff in Upper Town , surrounded by stone walls. You'll be forgiven for thinking you're in France.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming spot is one of Canada's best cities , and one of its most romantic, for good reason. Lower Town (a.k.a. Basse-Ville) is chock-full of dreamy narrow streets, eclectic shops, quaint restaurants, and a lane named Rue du Cul de Sac that's covered by blue and white umbrellas.
Québec City's setting on the banks of the St. Lawrence River only helps increase the quixotic feel. Palace Royale is the central tourist area, which perfectly blends the town's history and contemporary features. This is where you'll find outdoor patios on which to enjoy a meal al fresco while surrounded by enchanting buildings that date to the 17 th and 18 th centuries.

Many couples look forward to their first weekend away, where they can test their skills of navigating life together — even if it is just agreeing on directions or a place to eat. While all seasons offer a variety of perks, most partners choose Autumn or early winter for their escape. During this time of year in the mountains of Western Massachusetts, leaves are hosting their annual color show, dazzling with hues of vibrant red, warm oranges, and unbelievable yellows.

Romance is inherent to travel—that feeling of endless opportunity on account of nobody knowing who you are, the mystery of a new place, the beauty bowling you over everywhere you look. But some places are more romantic than others, and only so many can claim the title of the most romantic of them all. Our selections can be found below, and there’ something for every type of couple.
The adventurous will find isolation on an epic scale on northern Iceland' s windswept landscape, the traditional serenity on a private island off of Anguilla, and the bohemian layabouts a haven in a compound on the Andalusian coast. These are uber-luxurious bastions of beauty, places where not a care in the world need go to anything but your partner. No matter which of you venture to, it’s for certain that you will not be able to resist cooing “Oh, isn’t it romantic?” at least once.
This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.
All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Deplar Farm Arrow
Northern Iceland’s Troll Peninsula (do not let such a name conjure images of monsters and turn you off) counts itself amongst the nation’s finest mountain ranges. It is here that sheep outnumber people, and this true remove is utterly romantic––as though you’ve absconded with your lover to an Eden shrouded in mist, and so long as you remain the troubles of the world beyond do not concern you. The former farm accommodates no more than 32 guests at a time and is therefore perennially quiet and contemplative, and the range of activities in the wintertime is particularly spectacular. Banner excursions include heli-skiing virgin slopes and fly-fishing, but this is only the beginning. There’s also a trek to Langhus Farm for rides aboard Icelandic horses and views of the Arctic Circle over the Greenland Sea.
Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort, Mykonos Arrow
Destinations editor Shannon McMahon journeyed here for her honeymoon, a choice she does not regret in the slightest. In fact, she deems it a hotel “to plan your entire trip around”. It’s the only sandy stretch of private beach on Mykonos —A.K.A. the only spot on the island where you can guarantee some sustained peace and quiet from ceaseless throngs of partygoers—but this is not all that sets the Santa Marina apart from other island hotels. There’s the swimming, from an impossibly soft sand beach and into conditions uncharacteristically calm for Mykonos, and a sprawling spa with hammam-inspired treatments. The two restaurants are both laden with light aphrodisiacs—one with Asian-fusion seafood galore, another serving taverna-style slow-cooked lamb and grilled octopus. Fear not, however, as the party still gets going at the beachfront bar until the wee morning hours for the Dionysian date nights.
Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel Arrow
Life at this masterclass in sophisticated elegance revolves around aperitivo hour, which goes down on a breezy outdoor terrace and is accompanied by a jazz pianist. Villa Igiea takes one back to a time when a couple got all dolled up just to see each other, and to be in the company of others doing the same only enhances the romance that is every-crackling in this Italian air. In the company of your beloved, make an evening of people watching others who have arrived chasing the same feeling—couples that have been together for decades enjoying their umpteenth martini together, young lovers from aristocratic families stealing away for a weekend, and so on. As executive editor Erin Florio said in her review, “This resort is so timeless and elegant that you almost feel nostalgic for a Sicily that never even existed during your lifetime.”
Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora Arrow
Here’s a riddle for you: What’s better than doing nothing at all? Doing nothing at all in Bora Bora. Whether you’re a honeymooner or a parent in need of a break, this French Polynesian paradise feels worlds away from the minutiae of the everyday; and with little but miles of crystalline waters in sight, you and your partner will have almost nothing to distract you from one another. At this luxe Four Seasons outpost, there are several multi-bedroom beachfront villas and overwater bungalow suites (with either lagoon or mountain views) to choose from. But for the full experience, we’d suggest booking one of the specialty overwater bungalow suites ; these one-bedroom set-ups offer nearly 1,600 square feet of space to move around, plus a deck that runs the length of your bungalow or a private plunge pool. To really up the romantic ante, book a couples’ treatment at the overwater spa suite; beds sit above glass panels on the lagoon, while the outdoor tub has views of nearby Mount Otemanu.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo Arrow
In family hands since its opening in 1910, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is about as grand as they come. Situated right on the shores of Lake Como, it’s a spot that has long been setting the standards for European luxury hotels—it’s difficult to find the hotel reviewed or mentioned without a nod to the ever-updating, always-on-their-game staff and facilities (they do, after all, shutter every winter for renovations). It’s very formal, make no mistake, but this is a place that is designed for you to stay there through all hours of the day—dine Lady and the Tramp -style on handmade pastas with shaved truffles at La Terrazza, take in the scene with a digestivo on the terrace of TBar, swim in the pool that floats on the lake, and sleep on silk linens and a feather mattress topper.
andBeyond Benguerra Island Arrow
Getting to this resort off the coast of Mozambique , in the spectacularly sun-dappled Bazaruto Archipelago, takes time: the most efficient route is to fly from Johannesburg to Vilankulos, then hopping an eight-minute helicopter ride to Benguerra Island. But a bucket list experience like this is worth the extra effort. Once there, you'll find a low-key paradise with plenty to explore—and with around 140 species of birds, from kingfishers to flamingos, and just 10 casinhas, two cabanas, and one three-bedroom casa, you’re almost more likely to encounter the local wildlife than other people. You’ll want to spend days lazing on its perfect beaches, with views of the surrounding lagoon—but there’s also horseback riding, sunset cruising on a traditional dhow, and big game fishing to be sampled. Don’t miss a visit to see the flock of flamingos that inhabit a nearby freshwater lake—especially with a “castaway picnic” to accompany you there and beyond to a completely secluded beach.
Lion Sands Game Reserve Arrow
Set on the banks of the Sabi River, this luxurious resort on 10,000 acres comprises four lodges and two villas. Ivory Lodge rooms, done in ebony and ivory, have African artifacts and views of the reserve and its occupants from private terraces with plunge pools, while the cream and beige rooms at River Lodge have freestanding tubs as well as indoor and outdoor showers. Three unique treehouses, Chalkley, Kingston, and Tinyeleti, couldn't be more romantic, lit by lanterns, candles, the stars and the moon. After viewing elephants and lions on open jeep drives , enjoy traditional Boma dining, then settle in for the night, surrounded by the distant sounds of hippos, hyenas, leopards, and lions.
Royal Mansour Marrakech Arrow
You can bet that just about every detail at this palatial Marrakech hotel, which took more than three years and 1,200 master craftsmen to build, aims to please. Each of the 53 individual three-story riads (villas) have a mini courtyard (with a canopy that automatically unfurls if rain is detected); a dazzling living room and bedroom with silk-covered walls; a private rooftop terrace with a fireplace and heated plunge pool, and 24/7 private butler service—because of course. If you do decide to leave your room, (though, you very well may not) head to the spa, venture into a shopping trip like none other, and try one of the three superb restaurants: La Grande Table Marocaine and La Grande Table Française, both overseen by chef Yannick Alléno from Paris’s Le Meurice , and Le Sesamo, from chef Massimiliano Alajmo. Le Jardin, the verdant garden designed by Spanish landscape architect Luis Vallejo, stretches across more than six acres, and comprises the pool and the restaurant of the same name. It’s perfect for a stroll at dusk—though it also debuted an extension this spring, adding an herb garden, an organic vegetable orchard, and an artist’s residence.
COMO Shambhala Estate Arrow
Eyebrow-arching views greet you as you arrive at COMO Shambhala Estate on the island of Bali , a jungle-hugged designer health retreat on staggered hilltops above the Ayung River. For more than two decades, COMO Shambhala has reigned as a five-star refuge for luxury travelers looking to say farewell to stress and hello to spiritual development. East meets West at each of its 30 rooms, suites, and pool villas, whose otherwise spare interiors house hand carvings and fine antiques. (Stand-alone villas have private pools, and one-bedroom Retreat Villas have their own treatment rooms.) If it's wellness you want, there's a reason COMO Shambhala is one of our readers' favorite resorts in Asia : it's grander and more graceful than conventional spas; it's more transformative and soothing than corporate chain resorts; and it has every tropical panorama fit for Instagram.
Les Fermes de Marie Arrow
This pioneering, chalet-style hotel was built from scratch in 1989 out of old timbers salvaged from Savoyard farmhouses. It was the brainchild of local couple Jocelyne and Jean-Louis Sibuet, who went on to create a mini empire of small, interesting properties scattered across the Alps, Lyon, Provence, and St. Bart’s. Along with all that gorgeous pine—sloping beamed ceilings, slated wood terraces, four-posters, and open fireplaces—comes comfort: a cozy mix of textures and muted shades from silvered cow-skin rugs and creamy flannels to soft wool plaids and deep leather sofas, plus the occasional baroque carved antique. After a stint on the powdery slopes, have lunch on the terrace of Le Restaurant Alpin and order the divine three-cheese fondue—worth every calorie. Those who aren’t die-hard ski bums can work it off in the heated indoor pool at the Pure Altitude Spa, where signature treatments are packed with Arctic berries, botanical extracts, and anti-aging mountain edelweiss.
Marbella Club Arrow
A veritable village on the Andalusian coast (Andalusian alone being a rather romantic proper noun, conjuring images of caressed cheeks, horses running free, and all-around beauty), Marbella Club feels like a place where one can properly shack up. Originally a string of buildings used to dry figs (a particularly sensual fruit), this compound is meant to be wandered not with purpose but at ease—one can just hear the, “Oh, honey, we should check this out” floating on the breeze as another couple stumbles upon new restaurant El Mirage. The style here is Moorish, all creamy linens, painted tiles, and lush gardens, and the people are bohemian and beautiful. Beneath abundant citrus trees, soak it all in.
The Chanler at Cliff Walk Arrow
For a true taste of American history, we bet The Age of Innocence began and never ended at this opulent seaside resort. Newport has long catered to the country’s upper-crust, and you likely would have bumped into a Vanderbilt at The Chanler at Cliff Walk in the late 1800s. Today, rooms are decorated in the styles of different historical periods, each more extravagant than the next. Our favorite is the Martha’s Vineyard villa, an ocean-view beauty with a mantled fireplace, prim blue chairs, and a full-canopied four-poster king bed with an intricately carved wooden frame as the focal point. Come summer, book one of its three private yurts, where you can enjoy a light, prix-fixe dinner (think: fresh tomato salad, whitefish crudo) along with the ocean breeze. There’s a reason—or ten—why this place has often been voted the most romantic hotel in America .
Tierra Patagonia Arrow
There’s something about feeling like you’re teetering at the far margins of the world—albeit with the person you love—that’s undeniably romantic. And at the 40-room Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa, set on the edge of Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia, you and your partner will feel as though you’re really out there. Banked with earth and clad in lenga beechwood, the low-slung hotel winds for 650 feet along the base of a bluff, its aerodynamic shape barely interrupting the gales that whip in from Patagonia’s Southern Ice Field; guest rooms are understated, outfitted in a clean palette of wood, wool, and leather, all to emphasize the spectacular views of pampa and peak beyond. The hotel offers guided excursions within and around the park, including hiking trips and adventures on horseback; spend the day exploring, then retreat to your superior room, where you can continue to marvel at the views from the warm waters of a deep-soak bathtub.
Twin Farms Arrow
Spread across 300 acres of rolling hills and rambling trails, Vermont’s bucolic Twin Farms evokes a sort of country romance—it’s a sensation befitting a place purchased by Nobel Prize-winning writer Sinclair Lewis for his wife, journalist Dorothy Thompson, as part of his engagement promise to her. With just 20 accommodations, including cottages and rooms in a farmhouse, the resort is at once intimate and charming, but doesn’t skimp on modern perks. The rate is all-inclusive, folding in the hotel’s locally sourced, rightfully acclaimed food—which changes so regularly that chef Nathan Rich won’t even put out a daily menu—and glasses of vino from the property’s 15,000-bottle collection selected by sommelier Keven Ring. (And if you’d prefer to enjoy your meal in your room rather than in one of the dining areas, that can be arranged, too.) But dinner isn’t the only meal that should be special; the hotel offers picnics to-go, too, which you can tuck into after a long wander in the woods. The baskets, of course, change seasonally; during the summer, you might have a Vermont cheese and charcuterie with garden tomato salad, while the winter might yield a hearty beef chili.
Hotel Esencia Arrow
Right on Xpu-ha Beach, the best stretch of white sands on this part of Mexico’s Caribbean coast , Esencia is one of those hotels that is spoken about in hushed tones by bohemians in the know, none of whom want to let this secret get out. But those who do make it here discover a small, natural beauty of place set on a palm-swaying estate on the edge of the tumbling sea. There are hammocks to laze in, and a dimly lit spa where bespoke blends—made from ingredients harvested from the waters of the Caribbean and the surrounding Mayan jungle—are crushed into poultices to help smooth out knots. For snorkeling among rainbow-colored fish, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is a five-minute hop on the hotel’s catamaran. Hungry? There are ceviches and tacos to try at Mistura, a restaurant with views of the moon-dappled sea, and a wooden beach bar housed under a two-story palapa that does the best margaritas in Mexico. And then, of course, there are the rooms: the interiors of the house, originally built as a hideaway for an Italian duchess, have splashes of 1950s art and huge bedrooms with generous terraces; Jungle Suites with plunge pools (some indoor, some outdoor) and beach suites are a study in white.
Aman Kyoto Arrow
There’s no shortage of things to see and do in historic Kyoto , including Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, and the cherry blossoms that burst to life each spring. But if you’re looking for a heartier dose of nature to complement your daily dose of culture, the Aman, set in the city’s northern suburbs, is where you want to check in. Surrounded by hilly woodland and criss-crossed by coursing streams and moss-covered paths, it feels worlds away from everyday stresses—and that’s the point. Once you withdraw from the city, you can relish the resort’s sublimely quiet, peaceful feel, exploring the forested slopes it shares with the nearby Kinkaku-ji Temple, or Temple of the Golden Pavilion, a protected UNESCO site, and strolling the property’s lush garden, where camellias bloom in winter and azaleas arrive in summer. Add to that meditation sessions with a zen Buddhist monk and the chance to dip into the mineral hot springs in the resort’s onsen bathing pools, and you’ll find a thoughtful, almost unexpectedly romantic trip that allows you both the chance to relax and regroup on your own terms.
Jumby Bay Arrow
This 300-acre private island off the North coast of Antigua delivers a level of comfort possible only in the Caribbean. The terrain is rugged and wild, populated with darting lizards and free from any traffic that isn’t embarked on foot—it’s a “no cars, no keys” policy here. Come and go as you please from your suite or villa to any of the three restaurants, spa, several beaches, and all around the island. Whether you go for the suite or the villa, there’s plenty of room to play house: each suite has a bright entry courtyard of its own outfitted with wicker chair swings and a terrace overlooking the beach.
Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel, Anguilla Arrow
When it first debuted in 1988, Cap Juluca quickly became a favorite of the jet-set, who were drawn in by the pristine sands of Maundays Bay and the airy, Moroccan-style domed villas that dot them. By the time Belmond acquired the property in 2017, an update was long overdue—and just a week after they closed it, Hurricane Irma rolled through, destroying everything but those sugar-cube villas. It reopened again in late 2018 with five new villas, two new restaurants (including a revamped Pimms), and a gleaming spa—when just days later, LVMH announced it had reached a deal to acquire Belmond, as sure a sign as any that the smart set will continue to find their way to this Maundays Bay luxury resort for years to come. Of course, you’ll spend plenty of your time laying out on the beach, but don’t ditch the villas during the daytime altogether—outfitted with four-poster beds, linen curtains that balloon when the door opens, and soft Beni Ourain carpets, they transform a late-afternoon nap into a pleasure without the guilt.
Adare Manor Arrow
Adare is a delicious mix of old and new. Barely 30 minutes from Shannon Airport, it’s one of the closest country manors U.S. travelers can reach for an uber-green, romantic getaway in Ireland . (It's also an easy two-hour drive from Dublin .) While retaining an old-school, aristocratic vibe, Adare's fanciful gargoyles, genuinely warm staff, grand and intimate spaces, and super-comfortable rooms make it somewhere uniquely and unabashedly the Ireland of right now—with a recently redesigned golf course, courtesy of pro architect Tom Fazio, and falconry to boot. Also of note here: There are 365 leaded windows, 52 ornate chimneys, four towers, and seven stone pillars, symbolizing the days, weeks, and seasons in a year, and the number of days in a week. (When it was built in 1860, it was in the Neo-Gothic “calendar house” style.) A good omen for long-lasting relationships, no?
Malibu Beach Inn Arrow
Malibu Beach Inn democratizes the famously beautiful Los Angeles enclave’s “Billionaire’s Beach” with its station along the row. “Stay a night”, the inn beckons, “Enjoy the views our neighbors spent unspeakable amounts of money for.” The rooms are tidy, lots of warm-finished wood and neutral colors, but you’ll want to spend as much time as you can outside. It’s not just what you see, by the way, but the entire sensory experience—crashing waves audible from your personal balcony and from the terrace restaurant, as well as just about everywhere else, and crisp salty air lulling you into a peace that’s impossible to break. Spot wales, dig into some branzino, sip a local red, and just enjoy .
Six Senses Douro Valley Arrow
Wellness and wine may not seem like a natural fit—at least not if you go by the ascetic, alcohol-free programs of other health-focused retreats. But at this hotel, set amid the rolling vineyards of Portugal’s Douro Valley, they go together perfectly. Spend your days in the sunshine, luxuriating by the outdoor pool (or the indoor one, if the weather doesn’t cooperate), followed by an antioxidant grape facial or a deep tissue massage in one of its spa’s 10 treatment rooms; or sign up for one of the dozens of experiences on offer, including a jaunt to the local villages (via Tesla), where you can see the recently restored 12th-century Cistercian monasteries of S. João de Tarouca and Salzedas, followed by a tour of Quinta Viscondes da Várzea, an 18th-century manor house, and take a cooking class in its old school kitchen. There’s plenty to get you all the way outdoors, too, including helicopter tours, kayaking on the namesake river, and even good old-fashioned tree climbing, complete with climbing gear. And of course, there are ample opportunities to sample the local vino, both on property and off: for the former, book a session in the hotel’s wine library, where you can learn the basics of wine making and try a few yourself; for the latter, take a coordinated visit to some of the area’s boutique wineries, and try something new together.
Hotel Wailea Arrow
One of the best resorts in Hawaii, according to our readers , isn't beachfront. But that's actually a positive at Hawaii's only luxury adults-only resort, with 72 suites spread over 15 acres with 180-degree views of neighboring Lanai and Kaho‘olawe. Though there's a shuttle to the beach (and attendants to help you with umbrellas, towels, and the like once you hit the sand), be sure to put your vacation in the hands of the incredible staff. Allow them to organize a beach picnic—a gourmet spread to be enjoyed at sunset. You can also arrange kiteboarding lessons, sunset sailing, and aerial yoga. Fan of vintage cars? Take the drive of your dreams in Hotel Wailea's 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster reproduction—provided you know how to drive manual, that is.
The Mark Arrow
Unassuming in every way—we’re talking dimly lit hallways with pale blue doors and a hot dog stand in the lobby with a menu by Jean-Georges Vongeritchen—The Mark’s pleasures are as discrete as they are bountiful. Clipped white roses sat beautifully arranged on Florio’s dressing table during her stay there, and she notes a particularly deep bathtub on hand for sleepy soaks. This is what it must feel like, one can’t help but think, to keep a pied-a-terre uptown, to come and go at your leisure in Manhattan’s most exclusive neighborhood. It’s important to note that, at this address between Fifth and Madison, you are not far from Central Park. The Mark does not take such proximity for granted, offering to deliver guests an all-out picnic via pedicab complete with basket, blankets, and loungers.
Hôtel Du Palais Biarritz - The Unbound Collection by Hyatt Arrow
Biarritz, the buzzy resort town, was put on the map in 1854 when Napoleon III scooped up a beachfront property there and erected a monument of his love for wife Empress Eugénie in the form of a tremendous vacation home. In 1892, this palace became the Hotel du Palais, and in 2021 this hotel reopened after a tremendously ambitious 4-year renovation. After all of these years and all of these changes, the sense of tender and decadent dedication not only remains but prevails. Think a ballroom frescoed with fairytales perfect for a waltz, and a sumptuous bar lit by a 900-pound crystal chandelier. Loveliest of all is the vast Guerlain Imperial Spa, named for the perfumier who invented a cologne special just for Eugénie. Within these walls, everything is a gift crafted specially for you.
Alila Ventana Big Sur Arrow
This beloved Big Sur resort dramatically overlooking the Pacific and surrounded by acres of forest received a total reboot in 2017. And while it may look new—rooms have all been updated with plenty of wood and neutrals, 15 luxe safari-style tents have been added to the roster (though tent guests don’t currently have access to the resort, and are no longer subject to the resort fee) and the spa got a relaxation deck that looks out at the ocean—it hasn’t lost its laid-back 1970s vibe. If you want to totally disconnect, and plug in those connectivity-deprived gaps with hiking, forest bathing, spa treatments, and yoga, it’s for sure worth it. There really is something for everyone here—except for maybe the type-A person who needs lots of scheduled activities. Big Sur truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and Ventana’s mission is to spotlight and champion its setting.

The most romantic places in the world
By Laura Chubb , Francesca Syz and Lauren Burvill
Romance can be many things to many people, but few can resist the allure of a romantic escape for two. While there's no wrong answer when it comes to romance, some of the world's most beautiful spots lend themselves to catering to couples, especially when it comes to hotels. So whether you're planning a honeymoon , an anniversary or a weekend getaway just because, these are our top picks for the most romantic places in the world, plus where to stay in each.
1. Amalfi Coast, Italy
From the naturally blessed shores of Lake Como right down to Sicily's heart-melting capital Palermo , you could throw a dart anywhere on a map of Italy and land on one of the most romantic places in the world. It's spurred on much debate within the team but if we had to choose just one fuzzy-eyed spot in Italy, it's the Amalfi Coast. We're not alone in our admiration either. The Greeks, so taken by the area’s natural beauty, attributed it to a nymph who captivated the heart of Hercules. The towns of Amalfi Coast only add to the charm, with brightly hued houses dotted along the rocking hillside, each offering a unique outlook along with shops, restaurants and swimming spots that are up for discovery.
Where to stay: Pretty much all of the best Amalfi Coast hotels fit the bill for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. In terms of location, Borgo Santandrea in Amalfi is a winner, perched high in the cliffs and built into the rock face overlooking the sea. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and sea views. Palazzo Avino in Ravello has equally knock-out views, especially from the top-floor Infinito Suite with its large living room and a bathroom with a hot-tub-style bath. For a stay that pulls out all of the stops, it doesn't get much better than Le Sirenuse , a Pompeii-style red and white building in the centre of Positano. The restaurant here, La Sponda, with its 400 candles and bougainvillaea-clad dining room, is quite possibly the most romantic in the region.
2. The Maldives
For going off-grid
Confetti bursts of colourful tropical fish in gin-clear lagoons, freshly prepared breakfast spreads delivered to your private pool via floating trays, sipping a morning coffee while a manta ray soars underneath your feet – it's the stuff of honeymoon dreams and the much lauded reality of a trip to the Maldives. While there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in the Maldives , few places can compare to the archipelago country's innate sense for romance and adults-only stays. Boutique stays and lo-fi boltholes area rarity here, instead the best hotels in the Maldives are world class, spread out on their own private islands, nestling state-of-the-art spas and multiple restaurants amongst lush jungles, pristine beaches and house reefs.
Where to stay: Romance comes naturally to pretty much all of the hotels in this region. Some standout spots include Vakkaru , a lush coconut tree-covered island resort with a jungle cinema that guests can reserve for a private dinner and movie under the stars. For the latest shiny stay, Six Senses recently set up its second hotel in the Maldives, offering up a tip-top spa with an impressive couples' suite. In terms of aesthetics, it's hard to beat Gili Lankanfushi Maldives , where all villas are stilted over one of the most eye-wateringly beautiful lagoons in the country, keeping the island wild and the beaches on full dazzling display.
3. Santorini, Greece
Santorini is the knockout Greek island – the island with the best views, the best sunsets, and the best hotels. Combine all of these elements and it's a recipe for one of the most romantic spots in the world. Days are best spent out on the water, sailing to nearby islands and hopping between the best beaches in Santorini . But then again you could easily stay at one of the best hotels in Santorini – where private infinity pools boast the best seats in the house – and never want to leave.
Where to stay: For one of the best views on the island, check in to cliffside Nobu Hotel , where the 25 luxe rooms and suites come with uninterrupted views of the Aegean. Similarly Andronis Boutique Hotel offers up a series of traditional cave-style suites and villas with private infinity pools, cave pools and hot tubs, set right in the heart of Oía. For a private stay, this traditional cave house in Oia is one of top trending homes on Airbnb . The view is postcard worthy, made all the more romantic when admired from the semi-cave whirlpool and multi-level private terrace.
4. Paris, France
For a weekend break
When it comes to a romantic city break it's hard not to have all eyes on Paris . The clichés can't help but ring true when exploring the city, from serene strolls along the Seine to a glass of wine with a view at one of the best rooftop bars in Paris . And then there are the hotels in Paris , amongst some of the best in the world, sublime in their views , old-world charm and effortlessly chic interiors.
Where to stay: Newcomer Le Grand Mazarin , in the enduringly romantic Le Marais, is one of the prettiest places to stay – all velvet pouffes, clashing prints and tapestry canopies over the beds. Nearby, Maison Proust has only 23 Belle Époque-style suites and a swoon-worthy Moroccan-style heated pool. To make a grand romantic gesture, reserve a room at St James Hotel in 16th arrondissement, Paris’s only officially designated château-hotel. This 11th arrondissement Airbnb also makes for a romantic stay, complete with fluffy bathrobes, sleek decor and a leafy private terrace.
5. Marrakech, Morocco
For a winter sun escape
With Morocco ’s year-round, bone-warming weather just a three-hour flight from London , Marrakech makes for a sunny romantic escape when all is gloomy at home. And while the buzz of the Old City's winding souks and the sight of cobras dancing out of baskets make for a fun adventure, there are other sides to Marrakech away from the noise of Jemaa el-Fna square and the tourists at the Jardin Majorelle. For a slower and more private pace, swap the medina for the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, followed by a drink at Grand Café de la Poste, one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city.
Where to stay: When it comes to places to stay, the list of best hotels in Marrakech has grown rampantly in recent years, but our favourite – and by far the most romantic – is still La Mamounia . Set in 20 acres of gardens just inside the walls of the Old City, the hotel has retained the feel of a palace but added a contemporary theatricality to its accommodation (which now includes three three-bedroom riads with their own pools), plus four restaurants, five bars and a Salon de Thé. For a pretty riad stay , reserve a traditional room at Riad Sadaka and don't forget your swimming costume – the courtyard pool is simply stunning.
6. Bali, Indonesia
The spiritual getaway
Bali is beloved as the land of a million islands, misty, mythical mountainous stacks, and chilled-out beach clubs . It's also the land of some of the most beautiful places to stay in the world. No matter how many five-star hotels open up though, Bali is no homogenized island resort. It's a magical, spiritual place, which manages to retain its authenticity and culture, as well as its unspoilt beaches and green tropical landscapes. All essential ingredients for a romantic stay.
Where to stay: The list of fabulous Bali hotels is always expanding, but for something more down to earth, look to Sandat Glamping tents , set among bright-green rice fields close to Ubud. Cuddling under canvas is less lumpy groundsheets and roof leaks, more canopy beds and private decks. Newcomer Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape , is a “no walls, no doors” resort with just 16 villas as well as a two-story central pavilion from which a dreamy, lounger-lined infinity pool protrudes into the valley.
7. Tulum, Mexico
For bohemian chic
The golden beaches of Mexico have long been a draw for couples, but one such spot is increasingly becoming the go-to for well-heeled couples seeking bohemian barefoot luxury. Just south of Cancun on the Yucatán Peninsula lies Tulum , the promised land of designer yoga, spiritual jungle journeys and ancient-temple-fringed sands. Plus some of the best hotels in Mexico .
Where to stay: Casa Malca is a former hacienda of Pablo Escobar’s, and now a boutique hotel highly curated by socialite art dealer Lio Malca. Down a dirt path and away from the scrums of man-buns and juiced-up goddesses, here beach suites face a quiet stretch of powder-white sand; all windows point to the Caribbean . The hotel itself is like one giant immersive art exhibition; the entrance has a huge door carved out of tree trunks, framed by curtains stitched from vintage wedding gowns, between which dangle two swings made of antique furniture. As Lio says, it’s about ‘connecting with yourself and the wild’ as well as ‘luxury and art’.
8. Big Sur, California
For the outdoorsy
Nature-lovers can’t help but fall for Big Sur , a wild and storied stretch of California’s central coast. Its bewitching blend of towering redwood forest, muscular green mountains and crashing ocean views has drawn everyone from bohemian writers (Henry Miller) to Hollywood heavyweights (Steve McQueen), seeking isolation in its eucalyptus-scented heart. Is there anything more seductive than hiking hand-in-hand to remote, wooded waterfalls or discovering your own dramatic, deserted beach ?
Where to stay: Look to Alila Ventana , which sprawls across a Big Sur mountain meadow and where suites have a rustic-luxe, cabin-esque vibe. When you’ve finished gazing over the Pacific from your balcony hammock (roomy enough for two), try a couple’s treatment in a forest-facing spa cabana, plunge into the open-air Japanese baths, or take a dip in the clothing-optional communal pool.

9. Seychelles
For island indulgence
The world ‘oohs’ and 'aahs' about the Maldives but smart travellers know the Seychelles warrants just as much fanfare. Thanks to the islands' remoteness – 1,600km off the east coast of Africa – they have never been cheap to visit, or, for that matter, on any cruise-ship itineraries. And there in lies the appeal.
Where to stay: Only the best of the best can set up a hotel in the Seychelles . One such address is the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles , a remote hillside retreat overlooking the bay of Petite Anse on the south-west coast of Mahé. The 67 stilted villas and suites feel like tree houses, peeping out from the jungle canopy of coconut, mango, jackfruit and cinnamon trees. All the obligatory features of the luxury 'Robinson Crusoe' experience are in place – infinity-edged plunge pools, open-air showers, glass-walled bathrooms and expansive outdoor living areas – but taken to another level. At Six Senses Zil Pasyon , the villas are also more akin to super-smart, minimalist tree-houses, secluded amid rocks and pristine forest.
10. New York
It may be a busy city, full of comings and goings and beeping traffic jams, but New York is no stranger to magical moments of romance. It usually hits the city when the first autumn leaves start to fall, blanketing the city in shades of auburn and ruby, crescendoing up until Christmas when leaves are swapped for twinkling lights. During this time one of the most romantic things to do in New York is to just take a walk, around Central Park, through Greenwich Village, along The High Line.
Where to stay: To lean into the romance of it all, play up to the old New York charms with a stay on the Upper East Side. There's The Lowell (pictured) on ritzy East 63rd Street, where bedrooms are the last word in elegance, with polished mahogany floors, Persian rugs and good, hand-made furniture. For pure relaxation amongst the chaos, check into the Aman in midtown, where the sprawling, three-floor spa and wellness centre has a 65-foot pool, plus not one but two spa houses – one centred around an Eastern European banya, the other a Moroccan hammam.
11. Ibiza, Spain
For island chic
As insiders will tell you, there's a lot more to Ibiza than meets the eye. Go off the beaten track even a fraction and you will discover a world of sleepy hill villages, wild forests, rambling orchards and crumbling farm houses. Time your visit to spring and a further surprise awaits: almond trees in full bloom, covering great swathes of the interior, with entire valleys exploding into glorious white and pink blossom. All this is complemented by an appealing combination of warm days and chilly nights.
Where to stay: Front-row seats for this extraordinary natural show are available at Cas Gasi , a 12-room property that spills down a hillside smothered in almond, fig and carob trees. Since opening in 1998, Cas Gasi has become known as one of the best hotels in Ibiza , particularly with high-profile guests who love its secluded location and low-key luxury. OKU Ibiza also has a privileged location that gives you access to the most beautiful beach spots on the island, along with wabi sabi–inspired design, two serene swimming pools, regular yoga sessions and fusion cuisine.
For romance by rail
There is something irresistibly romantic about luxury train travel . Add India to the mix and you've got an experience guaranteed to dazzle. In the heyday of the maharajas it was not unusual for royalty to travel with their furniture – four-poster beds, thrones, you name it. This is certainly the look the new Maharajas' Express is going for. One of the only luxury trains offering itineraries that cross India's state borders, 'Royal India' is a seven-day epic journey from Delhi to Mumbai , taking in Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur ( pictured above ) and Vadodara along the way.
Among the highlights is a decadent Champagne lunch on a hillock overlooking the Taj Mahal, a tiger-spotting jeep safari in Ranthambore National Park and elephant polo matches in Jaipur culminating in a Champagne dinner. Life on board is all about comfort. All the cabins and suites are wonderfully regal with huge windows, comfortable beds, LCD TV's and DVD players; but if your feeling particularly flush, book the two-bedroom Presidential Suite, which occupies an entire carriage and has a living room big enough for several comfortable sofas and a dining table. (The junior suite is also surprisingly roomy and much more reasonably priced.) Other treats include an observation carriage with its own bar, games table and club armchairs, and two fine-dining restaurants.
13. Antigua, Caribbean
The spa retreat
Accessed only by boat, the secluded, car-free private-island hideaway of Jumby Bay ( pictured above ), two miles off the coast of Antigua , offers the quintessential Caribbean experience. The standout for romance is the spa , set close to the beach and open to the elements, with five treatment rooms that open onto private terraces. The signature treatments use ingredients taken straight from the garden; one of the highlights is a treatment that involves lying in a soft, handmade hammock while a therapist focuses on pressure points in your head, back, hands and feet to release tension. You can then amble over to your thatched bohio (hut) on the beach, or to one of the many hammocks strung up between the palm trees. The resort is good for creative little extras: to help you enjoy the astonishing night sky, staff will pack a Champagne picnic dinner and send you off to star-gaze on Pasture Beach; there are also cookery classes for men, led by head chef Paolo Lovari, so while their partners indulge in spa treatments (not to generalise), they can learn how to make everything from ceviche to Caribbean lobster bisque.
14. Venice, Italy
For a hit to all the senses
In any line-up of the world’s most romantic cities, Venice has long been blazing a trail. This jewel-box city has an extraordinary ability to seduce every one of its visitors – whether it’s via the haunting cry of a gondolier bouncing off the city’s ancient stone walls; the awe and wonder of sighting a Caravaggio in a backstreet church, or the first sip of a perfectly sweet Bellini in a tiny cicchetti bar stumbled upon by chance. Skip the summer, when oppressive crowds steal much of Venice ’s romance and come in winter instead – the city becomes intoxicatingly quiet, and you’ll get most of the big-ticket sites all to yourself. To dial up the romance, whoosh in on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express : it’s hands-down the most lavish train journey in the world, and guaranteed to whisk you straight back to the golden age of travel.
Where to stay: If you’ve got deep pockets, you can’t beat a stay at Aman Venice – the gilded ballrooms, Murano chandeliers and priceless frescoes were good enough for the Clooney’s wedding night. But if you want to flee the paparazzi, float across the lagoon to Belmond Hotel Cipriani , a little pocket of peace with romantic rose and hydrangea-filled gardens and an enormous pool with views across to St Mark’s Square. Slightly further afield but no less magical, Casa Burano offers a more laidback, affordable stay, squirrelled away in a string of candy-coloured fishermen’s houses on film-set pretty Burano. The island can get busy at times, but once the day-trippers vanish, there’s no better place to catch one of Venice’s famous fuchsia-pink sunsets.
15. Buenos Aires, Argentina
For flinging on your dancing shoes
Buenos Aires is often touted as South America’s answer to Paris. Yet there’s far more to the sultry Argentinean capital than it’s intoxicating collision of European and Latin American cultures. This enduringly sexy city is an endless love affair of tango, sizzling asado and big, full-bodied wines – and most definitely a place to get dressed up and stay out late. A crop of exciting young chefs is revolutionising the city’s thrillingly unpretentious food scene, and buzzy rooftop cocktail bars are slowly taking over the city. And of course, there’s no better way to get under Buenos Aires’ skin than by learning the art of the world’s most passionate dance – even better if it’s done at a traditional, dimly-lit milonga .
Where to stay: Palacio Duhau dominates Buenos Aires’ hotel scene – inside, it’s a feast of glittering chandeliers and marble floors, while the candlelit terrace at restaurant Los Salones del Piano Nobile is an unbeatable date night spot. For a more authentic experience in the heart of trendy foodie neighbourhood Palermo, Home is a hipsters’ hangout with a tiny pool flanked by blousy jacaranda trees and the smell of jasmine lingering in the air. The delightful staff are the hotel’s biggest asset – miraculously appearing exactly when you need them, but utterly tuned in to knowing when you just want to be left alone with your significant other.
16. Iceland
For adventurous spirit
It's hard not to fall for Iceland’s awe-inspiring primal landscapes. The country delivers a hit of romance and adventure in equal measure, and in winter – when short days shout out for cosy nights snuggled by the fire, and there’s a decent chance of spotting the elusive Northern Lights dance across the eerily dark skies – there’s no better time to visit this Nordic superstar. To take it all in, hire a car and hit the 828-mile Ring Road route – wending its way along the country’s entire coastal region, it’s one of the world’s most romantic road trips, swishing past the glaciers, geysers and black sand beaches Iceland is so famous for.
Where to stay: There are plenty of cute cabins to book into along the way: we particularly like the look of this one , touching distance from Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. To really hole up and hide away, book into Deplar Farm : deep in the ravishingly remote, bleak but beautiful Tröllaskagi Peninsula, this is one of Europe’s most isolated lodges – and a stay here truly is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. In Reykjavik, the Edition has warm and inviting rooms, with Italian furnishings made from ash wood and floor-to-ceiling windows that either frame the fjord and Mt. Esja or views of downtown.
17. Hamilton Island, Australia
For adventurous couples
Forget for a moment that the Whitsundays’ largest inhabited island is positioned right beside Heart Reef (exactly as it sounds: a perfectly heart-shaped coral reef). Because Hamilton Island isn’t for your typical doe-eyed duo – more for those possessing an affinity with the Australian fixation for flinging yourself into adrenalin-pumping stuff. The immaculate waters of the Great Barrier Reef offer world-class dive sites to discover together, while the island’s off-road trails provide a white-knuckle rush deep into the bush.
Where to stay: After a thrilling helicopter ride over this insanely Eden-esque landscape, daredevils can decompress at Qualia , a smart property on its own peninsula. It has 60 secluded one-bedroom, glass-walled pavilions, with private sundecks for gazing over the water – some with their own infinity-edged pool.
18. French Polynesia
The off-grid escape
Want to run away together? No one will find you at The Brando , an all-villa, super-exclusive hideaway on a private South Pacific island (30 miles north of Tahiti, but accessible only by six-seater plane). Marlon Brando bought Tetiaroa atoll in 1967 and, decades later, set about creating this sustainable, utopian spot, where nature alone provides both decoration and diversion. Smart, thatched dwellings tucked among coconut palms each have their own strip of sand, infinity pool and outdoor tub. The pristine lagoon and blindingly white beach are yours – all yours! – to explore. A hefty all-inclusive rate encompasses daily spa treatments, Champagne, food, excursions and more. (Be sure to make eyes at each other over French chef Guy Martin’s Michelin-grade feasts.) With only 35 villas on the entire island, intimacy comes guaranteed.
19. Provence, France
For old-school romance
We’ve got the likes of Cezanne, Renoir and Van Gogh to thank for parcelling up the pure timeless romance of Provence. A post-impressionist haze of higgledy-piggledy medieval hamlets, rolling olive groves and sunflowers lined up in serried ranks, Provence is the perfect setting for giddy sun-baked afternoons sipping rosé under the shade of a cypress tree, pedalling through lavender fields or hopping between vineyards.
Where to stay: There’s no shortage of romantic hotels to live out your Provençal fantasy in. Crillon Le Brave’s ramble of wisteria-tangled honey-stone buildings dominates an entire hilltop village; the best suites resemble private pieds-à-terre, with side-by-side rolltop baths and all-consuming views over the muted pastoral landscape. A little further south, Chateau Saint Martin is an ideal base for art lovers keen to explore gallery-laced St-Paul-de-Vence, brimming with pétanque-playing locals and home to the legendary family-run restaurant La Colombe d’Or. Back at the hotel, there’s a knockout spa (treatments can be taken in the rose garden on sunny days), and a Michelin-starred restaurant with neatly framed views of the glittering Cote d’Azur. Up here in the hills, you’re in proper fairy-tale Provence – and it’s the absolute antithesis to its see-and-be-seen coastal neighbour.
20. Kyoto, Japan
For city romance
From the weeping willows and paper lanterns of the historic Gion district to serene, manicured gardens and tinkling temple bells, Kyoto is a completely charming urban retreat. The antithesis of frenetic, futuristic Tokyo, it’s an immersion into the romance of a bygone Japan. And that romance really ramps up when you take a boat ride along the Oi River, where city streets are slowly transposed with misty, wooded hills.
Where to stay: At Hoshinoya , a singularly elegant ryokan group. Though the newer Tokyo version recently won a place in our Hot List, it’s at the Kyoto outpost that you’ll find the distinctive grace and tranquillity of Japan distilled. Moss-covered paths curve around sculpted maples and cedars; guest pavilions are exactingly designed, with sliding paper screens opening onto peaceful forest views. Better yet, bathrooms have deep, cypress tubs, with seasonal herbs provided to infuse your soak.
21. Botswana, Africa
For getting up-close with nature
To see Africa at its beguiling best, head to Botswana. The government here has put sustainability at its heart, shunning a revolving door tourism model in favour of low-volume, high-value stays. It’s a brilliant ploy to prevent the country’s precious national parks from becoming overrun, and in turn, Botswana has become one of the most exclusive spots for a safari – perhaps best known for epic wildlife-spotting opportunities and plum stays in some of Africa’s finest and most intimate lodges. Sure, you might not tick off all of the Big Five while you’re here, but instead of sitting in a bottleneck of 4x4s, you can cruise silently through the Okavango Delta’s network of waterways in a dugout canoe, or quadbike across the arid wilderness of the Makgadikgadi salt pans. There’s something utterly hallucinatory about the silence and seclusion; serene hot air balloon rides stand in for gas-guzzling helicopter flights, while nights in billowing white tents are paired with G&Ts around firepits and sleepouts with your lover under the starry skies.
Where to stay: A little oasis in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, Jack’s Camp is one of Botswana’s smartest places to stay, and the camp’s mahogany furniture and four-poster beds smack of old-world glamour. If you prefer something a little more modern, Xigera Lodge is an ultra-sustainable, off-grid choice – and it's filled to the brim with specially-commissioned works from exciting young African artists. Most importantly, it’s so vast you’d never know you weren’t the only guests. If you’re seeking a bucket-list honeymoon, this is it.
The 11 most romantic destinations in the world
Just as people are drawn to wildly unique destinations all around the world, romance is not one-size-fits-all.
Sparks fly for different reasons, and there are elements of a vacation that feel almost universally special for partners to enjoy together.
Perhaps the beauty of the best honeymoons , engagement trips, and anniversary extravaganzas is experiencing somewhere new hand in hand.
Whether it's a confection of technicolor facades lining cobblestone streets, pagodas and temples rising above lush forests, or a desert studded with rare wildlife, many destinations are ideal for romantic exploits. It doesn't hurt when there's bubbly and mind-blowing food involved, too.
Here are 11 destinations that speak to a variety of couples and offer that exciting sense of discovery imbued with romance.
Bali, Indonesia
So much of Southeast Asia is seductive, if only for having so many distinct environments that feel so otherworldly and far removed from home.
Indonesia's jewel of an island, Bali, exemplifies that. However, there's a multitude of additional reasons this mystical paradise (and many other destinations in the region) dependably delivers magic to those who visit.
There are golden and black sand beaches, Jurassic jungles, monkey-laden Hindu temples, volcanoes, delicious cuisine, a remarkable restaurant scene and thousands of spas. There's also a myriad of active pursuits for every type of traveler — surfing, cycling, hiking, cooking and snorkeling.
Bali's resorts are famously luxurious. Many offer standalone villas with private pools that provide plenty of privacy to couples who savor the region's signature indoor-outdoor style of accommodation.
One of the best things about the island is the possibility of choosing your own adventure, so to speak. There are hot neighborhoods that feel more Western and touristed — Canggu and Seminyak, for example. Others, such as Ubud, are also very popular yet sprinkle doses of Balinese culture, too. Sanur is quiet and peaceful, Uluwatu is heaven for wellness junkies, Nusa Dua is a resort haven, and areas like Manggis are a lovely blend of nature and authenticity.
Where to stay
On the southern coast near Uluwatu, Bulgari Resort Bali is accessed via a funicular to a private beach club on one of the most pristine ribbons of coastline on the island. There's plenty that seduces, including fine jewelry (and jewel-like chocolates, made in-house), deluxe pool villas with ocean views, and the Italian-meets-Bali prix fixe dinner at Il Ristorante — Luca Fantin. Rates start from $1,350 per night.

One of the only adults-only resorts on the island is also one of its newest and most exhilarating. Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape , blends villas with large pools and no walls — just breezy curtains for privacy from the rainforest. It also boasts an exquisite zero-waste, plant-focused restaurant and bar, a waterfall for thrilling dips, and an open-air spa for dreamy treatments. Rates start from $1,550 per night.
It's a classic for a reason. Paris, aka the City of Light, is also commonly referred to as the City of Love.
The very energy of the French capital is like a vintage romance — you can almost imagine yourself appearing in black and white, taking in iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe.
Lovers for decades have put their own lock on the Wall of Love and strolled arm in arm through the decadent grounds of the Palace of Versailles and Louvre Museum.

Beyond the landmarks that give Paris its charm, the city's dining scene is simply stupendous, with enough dimly lit, tucked-away gems for sharing French cuisine across a tiny table as there are famed eateries at which to pair plates with wine from some of the most beloved regions in France. A starlit walk hits differently when it's along the glittering Seine.
In the Left Bank's artsy Latin Quarter, near Notre Dame Cathedral and Luxembourg Garden, Hotel Dame des Arts is a cinematic boutique-style hotel with a to-die-for rooftop, Mexican fusion restaurant and spa treatment room. Rates start from $367 per night.
With generously sized rooms, an impressive five Michelin stars and gorgeous art deco architecture, the 1928 Four Seasons Hotel George V, steps from the Champs-Elysees, feels like a beautiful trip back in time — and a splurge. Rates start from $1,834 per night.

Big Sur, California
When it comes to epic coastal drives, it's hard to imagine anything beating Big Sur and the 90-mile stretch north from Hearst Castle to Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Rent a vintage convertible to experience it all the most idyllic way — those foggy sea views, redwood-topped vistas and dramatic cove after dramatic cove. Beyond simply cruising, there are picnic spots, hikes, scenic overlooks and remote beaches to savor a deux.

Along with being one of Mother Nature's true triumphs in the United States, this region is particularly well known as a honeymoon destination due in part to some legendary hotels with unmatchable views, hospitality and amenities.
Post Ranch Inn is beyond famous as Highway 1's most luxurious and acclaimed hotel, an escape designed for romance that doesn't allow anyone under 18 years of age. Extending nearly 100 acres, it's a reserve covered with redwoods and meadows, ocean-view pools and hot tubs and some of the most unique guest dwellings (including treehouses) of any hotel. The restaurant, Sierra Mar, is a destination in and of itself. Rates here start from $2,250 per night.
Updated several years ago, Alila Ventana Big Sur has won praise for its take on ultra-luxury hospitality — 1,200 feet above the Pacific Ocean. It's also adults-only, which makes for a secluded, sexy stay in any of the 65 accommodations, which include glamping. Accommodations stretch across a vast property, making it perfect for stargazing. Rates start around $1,300 per night for double occupancy, including all meals and various activities. World of Hyatt members can book this Category 8 property from 35,000 to 45,000 points per night.

French Polynesia
With its spectacular water in shades of bold turquoise, cobalt and pale aquamarine, and seemingly endless island stretches of silken sand fringed with palm trees, the islands of French Polynesia feel lifted from a dream.
Add to that deliciously fresh seafood, a relaxed vibe and spectacular resorts that put all that natural beauty within easy reach. The honeymoon sweet spot is about having exactly what you want — tropical cocktails, all the poisson cru you can handle, couples massages and snorkeling adventures — when you want it. A lot of that starts with the resort since, in French Polynesia, there are typically not a ton of off-property explorations that can be done independently.
Relais & Chateaux retreat Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts has hosted plenty of famous couples for their own romantic holidays over the years on the private islet of Motu Tautau. Polynesian style is on full display across the property, which comprises 58 suites and villas, some overwater and in view of more touristed Bora Bora. The snorkeling is truly epic, while the food is fine, and the spa treatments are stress-melting. Rates start from $895 per night.

Thatched-roof skylit overwater villas are a specialty of Conrad Bora Bora Nui , where the Polynesian dream is alive in the form of tiki torch–lit dinners on the sand, swimming with sharks, intimate beach picnics and a spa using Biologique Recherche products. Rates start from $1,190 or 120,000 Hilton Honors points per night.
South Africa
Lovey-dovey vacations don't only take place on a white sand beach — they happen amid wine vineyards and wildlife, too.
South Africa is a mecca for both in a major way with the vibrant cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, both worthwhile and natural wonders that have the power to blow anyone away. The Cape Winelands is one of the world's premier places to sip vino, not to mention the most picturesque, with jagged mountains that make for stunning sunsets framing world-class wineries and elegant restaurants.
Throughout the country, with a beach-studded coastline, teeming forests, wide-open savannas and starkly beautiful deserts, nature puts on its show. That's true for the local fauna, too, which includes the famous Big Five but also so many other rare and fascinating species. South Africa is home to incredible options for safaris, as luxurious as you can imagine and also as rustic.

The picture of bucolic heaven is Babylonstoren, an old Cape Dutch farm plus a hotel, garden, vineyard, bakery, spa, and everything else one could imagine. Time slows down on this sprawling property, and days are filled with mouthwatering eats and free-flowing wine. Rates start from $539 per night.
Otherworldly and awesome, The Motse at Tswalu, the largest private game reserve in the country, is an unbelievable destination for animal enthusiasts to soak up privileged private sightings of cheetahs, meerkats and more while also experiencing once-in-a-lifetime dining at Klein Jan in the midst of the red sand. All-inclusive rates start from $1,870 per person per night.
Todos Santos, Mexico
On the west coast of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, an easy hour's drive north of Cabo San Lucas, the surf and fishing town of Todos Santos is a sleeper-hit destination for couples.
Unlike Cabo, there are far fewer tourists, resorts and hotels in this "pueblo magico," as it's known. Instead, at the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, it feels gloriously off the beaten path and authentic — you may very well see donkeys on the beach.
There are galleries alongside the cute, casual restaurants that line colorful streets and many places to try excellent margaritas. The beaches are picture-perfect, with waves for surfers of all levels, whales to watch for in the winter, and baby sea turtles to help release with a local nonprofit. Boutique hotel options, especially, make this destination so appealing, offering well-rounded experiences with sexy accommodations.
With 32 rooms and suites, a happening central pool and a restaurant/bar, Hotel San Cristobal Baja, right on the beach, is an aesthetically pleasing place for couples to find privacy or make new friends with other in-the-know adult travelers — kids under age 12 aren't allowed. Rates start from $605 per night.
The most epic place to enjoy the cyan splendors of the Indian Ocean is undoubtedly the Maldives , an archipelagic nation made up of 26 atolls; chains of coral islands that are among the most photogenic in the world.
From above, the effect is like pearls in a chain of undulating jade water. In fact, a holiday here arguably starts the minute you board your flight since the scenery en route to each resort is so stupendous.

Every resort is essentially on its own private island — or several. The hospitality across the Maldives is truly next level, as locals treat each guest as an honored visitor to their home. It's a place for decadent meals (like local Maldivian lobster), palatial overwater villas, plus outrageously clear blue water for swimming with tropical fish, manta rays and even whale sharks, depending on the season and location. Bottom line: This is a bucket-list destination for romance if there ever was one.
When you've saved up to splurge, JOALI Maldives is a brilliant 73-villa island resort that's well worth it. In the Raa Atoll, awe-inspiring architecture and design, truly five-star food and beverage options across six restaurants (Japanese, Mediterranean and Levant cuisine), mind-blowing ocean immersions, and a dream-inducing spa all combine to create a flawless stay. Rates start from $2,040 per night.
In the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, home to one of the planet's largest gathering sites of manta rays, the freshly renovated overwater villas at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas — with its magnificent undersea restaurant — make for an alluring home away from home in paradise. Rates start from $1,600 per night, based on half board.
Cyclades, Greece
Greece's most famous group of islands, the Cyclades, is the stuff of honeymoon, proposal and anniversary dreams.
Comprising stunners such as Mykonos, Santorini, Antiparos and lesser-known los, these Aegean Sea islands are resplendent with iconic whitewashed architecture, cobblestone streets, impossibly blue seascapes, sandy beaches, fresh fish and legendary sunsets. Across the 220 small, large and uninhabited rock islands are seemingly infinite options for crafting a memorable itinerary.

Some islands can be reached from Athens by ferry, while others require a flight. Regardless, it's possible to find virtually anything you're seeking on these islands, from hiking and nude beaches to fine dining and wineries. There are also archaeological sites and remote mountain towns to explore and secret beaches for crystalline swims. Indulgence is very much on the table, and couples can embrace it at every turn.
The five-star spa resort Calilo set along six miles of golden beach on Ios, is a gorgeous retreat of 30 unique suites bursting with original art, heart-shaped swimming pools, olive groves and wellbeing modalities and treatments. The overriding theme of love makes it the place to go for romance. Rates start from $715 per night.
For an authentic Greek escape, many of the 59 suites and villas at Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort located within a century-old mansion and 400-year-old wine cellar in Santorini's Megalohori village, have private pools or Jacuzzis, along with scenic terraces. Rates start from $587 or 103,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Kyoto, Japan
Without actually going to Japan , it's hard to fathom just how romantic the country can be. Not in a tropical island beach way, of course, but in a quietly beautiful aura of romance.
There are serene strolls through bamboo forests, ancient pagodas nestled amidst zen gardens, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji, plus the most exquisite sushi and omakase imaginable. The culinary heritage and care that goes into each plate is unmatched — and don't forget the sake.
The beautiful and ancient city of Kyoto, in particular, is a destination for those who love history, culture and architecture, not to mention gourmet cuisine. It's famous for its Shinto shrines, imperial palaces, Buddhist temples, gardens and, each spring, cherry blossoms — though maybe most of all for being home to intriguing geisha in Gion.
All of that and more is accessible and easy to experience for couples who should also block out some time to savor their hotel, especially if staying in a ryokan or landmark luxury property.
In the historical neighborhood of Arashiyama, hugging a maple tree-lined river, Hoshinoya Kyoto provides a luxe take on traditional architecture with its gracious accommodations, on-site experiences (like incense ceremonies), a Japanese whisky bar and kaiseki restaurant. Rates start from $1,323 per night.
Blending authenticity with contemporary luxury, Aman Kyoto puts a modern spin on traditional ryokans with tranquil suites, a divine onsen and impeccable kaiseki cuisine, and easy access to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rates start from $2,160 per night.
Lake Como, Italy
Italy is undoubtedly packed with timeless vacation spots that ooze romance around every corner — there's Positano, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Puglia, Rome, Tuscany and Florence.
However, there's something about Lake Como that feels so special. Maybe it's the fact George Clooney spends his summers there. Or maybe it's the gorgeous weddings held there each season. Perhaps it's the lure of Aperol spritzes and cruising in a vintage wooden speedboat past grand estates, sunbathing on a floating pool deck or even paddle boarding on the shimmery lake up in the foothills of the Alps.
Related: The best destinations to visit from Milan, Italy
Maybe Europe's most mystical summer swimming spot, Lake Como is the deepest freshwater lake in Italy and arguably its most famous body of water. There are cute hotels in town, along with shopping and dining, but the best place to stay is actually on the lake.
With plush lake view suites — designed by the illustrious Patricia Urquiola — and a picture-perfect infinity pool, the intimate and ultra-luxe Il Sereno Lago di Como is a primo place to take it all in. Rates start from $2,190 per night.

Iconic and historical, Villa d'Este is a Renaissance palace dating to the 16th century with 25 acres of elaborate gardens. It's a classic choice for couples visiting Lake Como, especially since it has an immense floating pool. Rates start from $899 per night.
Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena is the best of many worlds — Caribbean paradise, one of the world's best preserved colonial towns, nightlife hub and foodie fantasy. There is an abundant vibrant energy in the city, which is split between a walkable, technicolor town and a modern city with tall buildings. In the former, at all hours, music emanates from homes, shops and storefronts, seemingly taunting visitors to shake their hips.
There's plenty to do and see in the most colorful city in Colombia. A street food tour should absolutely be on all itineraries, with knowledgeable guides serving up fascinating stories and historical tidbits along with all the tasty South American eats.
Another worthy exploit: a boat trip to the Rosario Islands, where pristine, sun-soaked beaches allow for excellent snorkeling. A romantic trip is incomplete without at least one sultry salsa lesson and a night out dancing with your lover.
With 20 guest rooms and 11 suites with private plunge pools, Hotel Casa San Agustin, housed in three beautifully restored 17th-century homes in the walled city, offers a romantic home base with an intricate design and a fine Colombian restaurant with live music. Rates start from $394 per night.
Storied and sumptuous, the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena — set in a glorious 1621 convent — is an iconic option that feels like a tropical palace. It boasts a courtyard restaurant and a large swimming pool, plus a long list of famous past guests. Rates start from $320 per night.

If that doesn't sell you enough on the idea, head to Castel San Peitro for sunset, where you can have the most romantic view.
2. Ios, Greece
Move over Santorini and Mykonos! While these stunning islands typically steal the spotlight, the island of Milos is the up and coming island destination for romance.

But there is a particular area of Cyprus that we really loved, which is Ayia Napa. It's home to the best beaches, and has pleny of opportunities for couples to enjoy some fun in the sun.
Just 45 minutes outside of Ayia Napa, we stayed at an incredibly romantic hotel called Athenio . It's family run, has delicous food, and is beautifully lit at night for a truly romantic evening.
Athenio is a beautiful hotel nearby Ayia Napa in Cyprus.
4. Etretat, France
Move over Paris, we found one of the most romantic places in the world, and it's just a few hours west of France's capital.
Etretat is a small coastal town with beautiful gardens, giant cliffs, and a handful of beaches to explore. But what makes it super romantic are the views at sunset from the top of the cliffs.
There is even a secret cave that has a window with views of the beach down below. Head there for sunset and grab a bottle of wine and some cheese for a truly romantic evening with your significant other.
5. Dordogne, France

6. La Gomera, the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are some of the most beautiful and diverse islands in the world! While we love all of them, we particularly choose La Gomera as one of the most romantic places to travel in the world because of its special unique experiences.
We traveled the island by van, and every morning the sunrises were simply magical, with incredible views of El Teide Volcano in Tenerife. We cozied up in the van at night, but were ready to hit the beaches during the day.
THe best part though? There is an exclusive cave inside a resort that you can rent out for lunch or dinner. Your food and drinks are delivered via a cable, so you can enjoy a romantic dinner together. There is even a bed included! Talk about adding a bit of spice to your trip.
7. Lake Bled, Slovenia
Lake Bled truly feels like your stepping into a fairytale, and is one of the most romantic places to travel in the world for the nature lovers out there.

The Dolomites is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy, and is deifinitely one of the most romantic places to travel in the world.

Lapland may just be the most magical winter wonderland in the world. Imagine blankets of snowier massive forests, reindeer or husky sledding, and the northern lights.
In Lapland you can stay cozy in incredible glass igloos to watch the sky dance with colors, warm up in the saunas, soak in hot tubs, and even visit Santa Clause's village! It truly is one of the most romantic places to travel in the world, and extra magical in the winter time.

10. Lofoten Islands
The Lofoten Islands are some of the most grorgeous islands on Earth, and for us was one of the most romantic destinations in the world.
Visit in the summer and you'll be able to experience 24 hours of sunlight, charming fishing villages, and some of the most gorgeous hikes we have ever experienced, which are particularly romantic to spend sunset to sunrise (it never gets dark).

The Lofoten Islands is one of the most beautiful island chains in the world.
11. Tbilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi just may be one of the most underrated capitals in Europe, and it's perfect for a romantic getaway.
Georgia has amazing comfort food and wine, affordable glamping experiences, and quirky architecture. But what we particularly love about Tbilisi is the area of thermal baths right in the city center.
We spent our anniversary in Tbilisi, and Fede took me to the most famous Spa in town (Orbeliani). There is a special private room that they set up with music, massage beds, and a pool to enjoy, making it a great place for a special romantic occasion.
The Most Romantic Places to Travel in the World: North America
While we personally think Europe is full of many more romantic places to travel in the world, the Americas also have some notable places we believe are perfect for a quick romantic getaway.
12. St Augustine, Florida
So many people flock to Florida for romantic getaways, but this town is so much more than just a quick beach weekend (although it does have a beach too!).
St Augustine is the oldest registered city in the entire country, and is also one of the most charming. Not only that, but from mid November until January the historic town has "night of lights", when the entire city is draped with lights, making it even more magical for couples to enjoy.
For a super romantic local stay, we recommend Lions and Lanterns, which is run by a local Josie who creates incredibly stunning rooms to rent her guests.
13. Guanajuato, Mexico
Guanajuato may just be one of the most underrated destination in Mexico. While most flock to the beaches of Mexico, this city boasts vibrant colors, and is made of over 1,000 alleys!
Join a callejoneada (a musical walking tour), roam the quaint streets, or even stay in a castle for the night! Like Verona, Guanajuato also features a balcony with a tragic love story, just like Romeo and Juliet.
Guanajuato is the enchanting European city of Mexico, and definitely was one of the most romantic places in the world we've traveled to.
14. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Just an hour and a half away from Guanajuato is another charming city in Mexico that is super romantic.
San Miguel de Allende is known for its large pink Disney-looking cathedral, its stunning architecture, and a really romantic spa in town.
For a bonus, you can also stay in a hotel filled with suns! It's honestly one of the cutest hotels we came across in Mexico.
15. Parc Omega, Canada
Just 90 minutes outside Montreal is one of the most unique accommodation experiences, where you can sleep amongst the wolves!
In a beautiful glass cabin you can cozy up while experiencing these furry friends just outside your door. Th epark itself has a lot to offer, and staying here (especially in the winter) makes it one of the most romantic places to travel in the world.

28. Wadi Rum, Jordan
Located in the south of Jordan, this desert is full of otherworldly landscapes, and also some of the most romantic glamping sites in the world.
Watch the sunrise on the dunes, sip tea with the locals, ride camels at sunset, and watch the sky fill with stars at night. Wadi Rum is a truly magical place, and one we'll always cherish.
We particularly recommend staying in one of the domes at Memories Aicha Luxury Camp , as this is one of the most beautiful glamping sites we have ever seen!

While most people flock to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, we found the most romantic place in the UAE to be Al Ain.

Prague, Czech Republic
Known as the “city of a hundred spires,” the Czech Republic’s capital is pure magic from its dazzling architecture and winding streets to one-of-a-kind gems like its fifteenth-century astronomical clock (be sure to visit the old town square to watch its spellbinding mechanical figures come to life on the hour). Prague is so in love with love that its official tourism site offers a special guide to experiences for couples — and each year on the first of May, locals celebrate romance by gathering to kiss in Petrin Park .
Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley has a well-deserved reputation for winemaking, of course, but it’s become a destination for couples with eclectic tastes: a morning that begins with a soak in local hot springs could ease into a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant , an afternoon of gallery-hopping and wine-tasting, and a sunset flight over the golden hills in a hot-air balloon.
Locals in Bali are well aware of the Indonesian island’s status as one of the world’s top honeymoon destinations, and its spectacular resorts offer intimate accommodations of all kinds: visitors can enjoy otherworldly sunsets from the privacy of luxurious villas, stretch out for massages overlooking the sea and even request rooms in local restaurants that cater to just two guests at a time. The pristine beaches, in turn, are ideal for strolling all year long; unlike other tropical destinations, the weather on Bali’s shores is consistently, perfectly temperate.

It’s the perfect place to celebrate your love story.

Plenty of Sonoma's hotels offer spa treatments, but what could be more memorable than a massage in a 22-foot wine barrel? Book side-by-side treatments at Magical Massage for a one-of-a-kind experience.

For an atmospheric picnic, head to Sand Dollar Beach, where couples can admire the scenery sans the crowds. For a more upscale outing, take a day trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea for its art galleries and fairy tale cottages.
Let Big Sky's vast terrain, fresh air and rustic romance carry you and your loved one away from the ins and outs of everyday life. Every winter, couples flock to this Montana destination for its top-notch ski resort (complete with a heated chairlift), though the offseason has its charms, too (think: fly fishing on scenic rivers, hiking under an endless blue sky or taking a road trip to Yellowstone National Park.) For a curated Montana experience, spring for an all-inclusive ranch, where you'll find private cabins, homegrown cuisine and personalized service.
What could be more romantic than a sunrise beachfront horseback ride for two? Or a private sunset cruise aboard a 40-foot catamaran? You and your love can experience this and more on Amelia Island, one of Florida's Atlantic coast barrier islands. Hop on bikes and explore the scenic Amelia Island Trail, or pedal to downtown Fernandina Beach for its Victorian-style architecture, antique shops and galleries. After a day spent sightseeing, pamper weary muscles with a couples massage at one of the luxury resorts that call the island home.
This tiny Massachusetts island exudes New England charm. Stroll arm in arm with your sweetheart down cobblestone streets, unwind on white sand beaches and snap selfies in front of iconic lighthouses, such as Brant Point Lighthouse and Great Point Lighthouse. Then, grab a lobster roll to share from one of the island's premier seafood restaurants, and revel in the extraordinary Atlantic Ocean views from the Sconset Bluff Walk. When you're ready to retire for the night, you'll have your pick of quaint Nantucket inns.
Whether you time your trip for summer boating, fall leaf peeping or snow season, upstate New York makes for an intimate setting. Depending on when you visit, you can bond with your beloved on a sleigh ride, a paddling trip or a scenic hike, where you'll be treated to awe-inspiring views of the Adirondacks' forests, lakes and mountains. When you're adventured out, bop between some of New York's most iconic small towns, including Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, for local dining and shopping. What's more, you can choose from accommodations ranging from luxe lodges packed with amenities to secluded wooden cabins for two.
Savannah, Georgia, is tailor-made for a weekend getaway. Spanish moss hangs over sidewalks that lead past hundreds of historic homes. The lively River Street area features a bevy of shopping, dining and nightlife options, while nearby islands provide a relaxing respite. Meanwhile, Forsyth Park provides the ultimate romantic backdrop for memorable couples photos, and if you're feeling brave, you can hold each other tight during a ghost tour at the hauntingly beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery. For charming digs in the heart of the city, hang your hat at one of Savannah's charming bed-and-breakfast accommodations, or rent a snug carriage house.
If your ideal romantic escape entails a lazy agenda, shingle-covered beach houses and quaint towns, Martha's Vineyard is just the place. On this Massachusetts island, you can relax on quiet beaches, sample decadent fare at upscale restaurants and explore the historic Edgartown Lighthouse, which offers incredible views of the harbor and neighboring Chappaquiddick Island. On a warm, sunny day, venture to Oak Bluffs, where you'll find charming gingerbread cottages at The Campground. For the ultimate romantic retreat, book a stay at one of the island's top hotels, some of which offer complimentary bike rentals, beach chairs and continental breakfast to guests.
Reconnect with your sweetie during a getaway to Jackson Hole. This piece of Wyoming paradise is ideal for all kinds of outdoor pursuits, including hiking and skiing. Should you need to soothe your aching muscles after an active day, go for a dip in the Granite Hot Springs, Astoria Hot Springs or your high-end resort's outdoor hot tub. Whether your dream romantic vacation includes horseback riding through the majestic Grand Teton National Park, sipping wine by a crackling fireplace or unwinding at a world-class spa, Jackson Hole is the perfect place for you and your other half.
For lovebirds who enjoy skiing and cuddling up by a fireplace, Aspen is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. Spend your days sharing ski lifts in the snow-capped mountains before partaking in the highly touted après ski scene. If you arrive during the warmer months, take advantage of superb hiking and scenic gondola rides. Then, retreat to one of the many hotels and resorts that offer glitzy accommodations for two – not to mention some must-visit spas . If you're not ready to turn in just yet, Aspen's nightlife options include plenty of live music venues, clubs and cocktail lounges.
With 40 miles of protected seashore, this region of Massachusetts offers plenty of space for that long walk on the beach. And the slow pace of Cape Cod means you don't have to focus on the hustle and bustle of daily life – you can spend quality time together swimming, biking and eating fresh seafood instead. Cape Cod is also home to a handful of breweries and wineries, so you can toast to your special someone during a tasting. Splurge on one of the Cape's five-star accommodations for spectacular ocean views and sumptuous amenities like soaking tubs for two, in-room fireplaces and private balconies.

There’s something about a winter getaway to a mountain town filled with all the textbook cozy, cold-weather stuff that just screams romance. Imagine spending the day skiing, cuddling up on a sofa with a hot toddy or cup of mulled wine, heading to a dimly lit bistro for dinner, and retiring to a fireplace-warmed room at a charming slopeside hotel. Then again, jetting off to a warm-weather island in the Caribbean that has blue skies, beaches, and toes-in-the-sandy luxury resorts — and will leave you with that post-vacation glow — is guaranteed to get the sparks flying, too. The frosty season also stands out as the ideal time to visit a major city like Paris or New York City to get swept up in the cosmopolitan charisma and culture without droves of other tourists. And it’s worth considering a once-in-a-lifetime trip during a period that’s typically slower, which means more wallet-friendly rates and fewer travelers.
Searching for some inspiration for a couples-oriented escape that’s sure to delight during the months of December, January, and February? Read on for 20 incredibly romantic winter getaways experts love — and you will, too.

Charleston, South Carolina

From carriage rides through Central Park and ice skating to dining in an outdoor igloo and drinks on a rooftop underneath the starry sky, New York offers a winter dreamland for couples . Yes, the City That Never Sleeps is inherently fast-paced, but a sense of peace permeates the colder months. Angela Malek, a North America travel consultant at Scott Dunn , encourages duos to slow down and take it all in. "Stop in a cute coffee shop and savor a frothy latte, unwind at a luxe hotel spa, see a Broadway show, and treasure those special moments spent together."
Sonoma, California

Most people visit Sonoma in the summer or peak harvest and completely overlook the sleepier winter season. Couples familiar with the myriad charms of this quieter period love the sense of seclusion and serenity that washes over northern California. It’s a great time to go wine tasting at the many organic vineyards, savor farm-to-table fare, unwind with spa treatments, strike out on the hiking trails in nearby state parks, and wander around the historic downtown. Without the crowds, everything just feels more intimate and romantic.

St. Barts has a reputation as an ultra-luxurious, adult-oriented island that’s at once revelrous and relaxing. In its peak season, this Caribbean paradise turns up the heat with buzzy beach club parties and see-and-be-seen restaurants. Of course, that’s not to say couples won’t find plenty of quiet moments to enjoy each other's company while doing serene hikes, indulging in spa treatments, blissing out on near-empty stretches of white sand, and posting up at a secluded villa or a five-star hotel that’s used to catering to anonymity-seeking A-listers.
Marrakesh, Morocco

A seductive feast for the senses, Marrakesh dazzles with colorful souks, Djemaa el Fna square, the oasis-like Majorelle Garden, and romantic riads with rooftops for watching the breathtaking sunsets. What makes the Red City especially appealing during the winter months is the mild climate and clear skies. If you really want to impress your partner, Rachael Mendizabal, lead tailor-made travel consultant at Scott Dunn, suggests coordinating dinner in a private tent in the Sahara desert to savor delicious Moroccan cuisine under a blanket of stars.
Stowe, Vermont

A legendary fall foliage locale and one of the prettiest small towns in Vermont , Stowe brings the romance in the snow-covered winter months. This adorable getaway in the northern corner of the Green Mountain State turns on the charm with New England architecture, covered bridges, and storybook ambience. Outdoorsy couples will love shredding the slopes , traversing groomed cross-country skiing trails, tubing, and ice skating. When it’s time to warm up, cozy cafes for sipping cocoa and quaint inns with fireside rooms await.
Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town overflows with natural beauty, history, and culture. Due to its Mediterranean climate, the months of December, January, and February are mostly warm and dry, which is prime for exploring its many scenic and human-made highlights. Whether you plan to spend a week exploring the beaches, climbing to the top of Table Mountain, and visiting Robben Island or just do a few days in the capital before heading to wine country or a safari in Kruger National Park, it’s the superlative far-flung escape for couples who like a little bit of everything.
London, United Kingdom

A winter trip to London is all about walking around to see the larger-than-life landmarks before ducking into pint-sized cafes, quaint bookstores, and fireside pubs to warm up. "The spirit of the seasons really comes alive in December with decorations and the annual Hyde Park Winter Wonderland ," says Meg Shepro, a travel consultant at Scott Dunn. Of course, the Big Smoke charms couples in the quieter months of January and February, too. It’s a great time to see a theater show in the West End and stay at Beaverbrook Town House , a grown-up hideaway in Chelsea.
Cartagena, Colombia

A sizzling port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Cartagena is the perfect romantic winter escape for couples who like warm weather, a sultry atmosphere, photogenic architecture, and beautiful beaches. The colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and lively performances at squares in the walled Old Town are matched by the wealth of experiences for pairs to enjoy — from candy making to the bustling nightlife scene. Just an hour boat ride away, the Rosario Islands have coral reefs with diverse marine life and excellent snorkeling.
Patagonia, Chile
Couples seeking a far-flung adventure should set their sights on Patagonia in the sunny winter (a.k.a. summer in the Southern Hemisphere). The ultimate romantic getaway for outdoorsy types, this vast final frontier region supplies a stunning mix of terrain — glacial fjords, sparkling lakes, temperate rain forests, and mountain peaks — for hiking and kayaking as well as unparalleled stargazing far away from light pollution. It’s not all rough and rugged, though — luxury lovers can shack up in elevated style at The Singular Patagonia .
Banff, Canada

Banff takes travelers' breath away in the winter — and it’s not just because of the frigid temperatures. This wonderland shows off spectacular scenery with snow-dusted forests and peaks. Must-do outdoor activities include skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, fat biking, ice skating on frozen lakes, and helicopter tours. Surrounded by protected parkland, the Fairmont Banff Springs is a regal castle hotel with a spa for couples treatments, cozy rooms, and seasonal dining.
Bangkok, Thailand
Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure
If your definition of a romantic winter getaway involves the hustle, bustle, and exuberant energy of a dynamic city, Bangkok beats the rest. Thailand’s capital brims with ornate shrines, sacred temples, and mega malls. It’s also a culinary superstar, with everything from Michelin-rated fine-dining restaurants to famous street-food stalls with black sesame dumplings and aromatic bowls of noodles. "I like to send couples on a boat trip along the Chao Phraya River and for a nightcap at the rooftop bar atop The Peninsula Bangkok ," says Quinn.
Valparaíso, Chile
Patrick Donovan/Getty Images
The "Jewel of the Pacific," Valparaíso is a vibrant and fascinating coastal city with centuries of rich history, countless frame-worthy photo ops, and a pleasant winter climate. Winter means plenty of wandering the colorful streets, admiring the unique architecture, and visiting La Sebastiana, the former residence of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda turned museum. Even if it’s not swimsuit weather, couples will still have a lovely time strolling along the gorgeous beaches. It’s also worth doing a day trip to nearby vineyards to sip local wine.
Kawaguchiko, Japan
Ratnakorn Piyasirisorost/Getty Images
Many locals flock to Kawaguchiko for its world-class skiing and breathtaking alpine scenery. Traditional onsen culture continues to thrive and therapeutic hot springs dot the landscape. And the snug izakayas are perfect for date night. Quinn recommends staying at FuFu Kawaguchiko for snowy walks through the woods and mesmerizing views of Mount Fuji. "It’s a deeply romantic setting in the winter for couples who want to embrace the natural world along with a healthy dose of wellness and relaxation," she says.
Rome, Italy

Rome in December exudes a festive allure with holiday markets. January and February are wonderfully underrated months in the Eternal City. Less crowded than the nonstop summer season, this slower period provides ample opportunities for couples to visit renowned landmarks like the Colosseum and Pantheon without hordes of travelers. Trattorias attract diners with handmade pasta, red wine, and warm hospitality. It’s also possible to score favorable rates at Hotel de Russie, a Rocco Forte Hotel , which was voted Travel + Leisure 's favorite hotel in Rome in the 2023 World's Best Awards.

In recent years, Venice has implemented various strategies to combat overtourism, including plans to require reservations and fees for day-trippers as well as the prohibition of large cruise ships. The city, which is known for its canals, is also contending with the impact of climate change, as it has experienced a sinking of over 5.9 inches in the past century. In 2019, Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, attributed a significant flood that affected over 85% of the city to climate change.
In addition to these environmental issues, Venice has experienced overcrowding due to a large number of tourists visiting the area. Residents living in Venice have felt as though there is not a fair balance between the needs of visitors and those who call the city home.

These are just a few of the cheapest places to travel in 2024.
Europe is undeniably a dream destination for travelers across the globe. The sun-soaked beaches of Spain are the top draw for a European vacation, followed by historic locales like Paris and Rome. However, a new contender on the continent is stepping up to kick the city of lights down a notch, and it's far from your typical tourist hotspot. Turkey, formally known as the Republic of Türkiye, is poised to overtake France as Europe's second-most popular holiday spot — and not for the reasons you may think.
Why is Turkey trending as a European vacation spot? It's no secret that Turkey boasts a rich tapestry of history, culture, and stunning landscapes. From the ancient wonders of Istanbul to the surreal rock-carved landscape of Cappadocia, the country is something of a treasure trove for explorers and those with a zest for adventure. Not to mention the draw of trying an honest-to-goodness Turkish Delight straight from the source. But in recent years, something unexpected has drawn visitors in droves: affordable and quality medical treatments.
