This was a great experience. Everything was perfect! Amy AKA Miss captain lady, was the Captain of the boat during my trip. She was a complete sweet heart and a lot of fun. During the sunset cruise she had two deckhands that provided a wealth of information during the boat ride. They shared history and funny stories. It lasted about an hour and a half. She allowed wine and beer on the vessel, but no hard liquor. (Completed understandable) Her deck Hands gave us a wonderful tour of the surrounding island and lighthouses and homes. I got to see the infamous north dumpling island and fishermen island. They offered free refreshments and had snacks that could be purchased. The team also provided clean blankets in case anyone was cold during the trip. Mystic Connecticut has a great vibe and interesting history. I had an awesome time.

What a wonderful trip! We booked the sunset sail from 6-8pm. Captain Jack and his crew Ben and Evan (ethan?) were amazing! Super sweet and they were kind enough to give us a blanket when it got a bit chilly. Also provided water and lemonade. You're allowed to bring your own drinks/snacks on board. Not one bad thing to say about the trip, highly recommend doing this if you're at mystic seaport!

It's okay, we were expecting more of a relaxed BYOB Sunset Cruise. One of the seats was on the cooler that they kept moving around which was annoying. The crowd was all older and very stiff. The crew shared a bunch of historical facts. Not really the vibe we were looking for and not sure I would recommend or go again.

Photo of Christopher D.

Good times. Crew is fantastic. It is BYOB(beer and wine only. NO HARD LIQUOR) The tour is a beautiful scenic adventure into the Atlantic with many historic and unique places along the way; including an island that once seceded and the general store where Amelia Earhart got married. Bring tons of sunscreen and water for hydration. I would not recommend doing this tour with little kids as there is a lot of down time. If you do make sure they have plenty of activities to stimulate them.

We had a great time on the sunset tour! Pros: Very punctual, clear safety instructions, great crew, and an absolutely beautiful sunset. We sat in the very back which was great from a crowding and viewpoint perspective. I would definitely recommend this experience!

This cruise was fantastic. Captain Eric, Jack, and Oliver were outstanding and made the cruise very enjoyable. They did a great job of highlighting the surrounding area by telling stories of it's history, incorporating a little humor in it. Their interaction with the guests was nice and it was very welcoming. The length of the trip was two hours and that was just the right amount of time. Unfortunately there was no wind that morning so we didn't get to cruise too far. I'm still glad we did it and would probably do it again when I come back to Mystic. This time for the sunset cruise.

Photo of Kate C.

Best sunset cruise ever. Captain and crew were professional and friendly. Very knowledgeable of the area, we learned a lot!! Sunset was beautiful and we took some great pictures. Water and lemon aid were available on the cruise (no charge). You can bring snacks and drinks onboard. Please remember to tip the crew when the cruise is over if you had a great time. We tipped 20% of cost. They deserved it!

Booked an evening cruise which they called and canceled because of the fog that was coming in, I didnt believe it because it of the blue skys, 2 hours later I was on the Stonington point and couldn't see 3 feet! Thanks to the lady who called me, would have been a dangerous and worthless cruise!

Photo of Mark H.

Loved this! We took the morning cruise, leaving at 9:30. Captain Amy gave us a great introduction to the Argia, and the ship hands Karen and Jack worked the sails for a fun 2 hour journey into stories of the waterside area. Jack pointed out many landmarks with some historical information, and Karen's storytelling skills were a hoot! It's a comfortable 2 hour cruise and they offer free water and lemonade. It's also BYOB for those interested. If only it lasted longer! Highly recommend!

Photo of Bella V.

I feel like the crew made the experience. Very nice and personable, well informed on all things mystic of course, with lemonade and water available on ship, the young man who was our commentator for the day was hilarious so that made it even better. The ship was clean. We purchased the bench with the seat back which was nice for our backs! There is a small bathroom on board below that was very clean. It was probably my fault but I really had no idea where exactly i was parking and where I was to go. Maybe I hadn't read the email well, but I think the best advice to give anyone is to park in the large pay lot but when you pull in drive to the left back towards the townhouses on the dock waterside and then walk to left towards the dock to get to the boat. We parked in the pay lot but we weren't sure where we were going after that. The walk really wasn't that bad at all though regardless. Bring layers and bring some cocktails! I would certainly recommend the ship!

SABINO: STEAMBOAT

From about 1820 to 1940, coastal and riverside residents relied on steamboats as much as we rely on cars and buses today for convenient transportation. With poor roads and few bridges, it took far longer to travel on land than it did at eight miles an hour in a comfortable steamboat. But by 1900 railroads had reduced the demand for steamboat service, and with the popularization of the automobile and the development of reliable paved highways in the 1920s, the steamboat became obsolete.

The Steamboat Sabino (pronounced Sah-BYE-No) was built in East Boothbay, Maine, by the W. Irving Adams Shipyard. The vessel was christened as Tourist on May 7, 1908, and operated on the Damariscotta River by the Damariscotta Steamboat Company. After sinking due to an accident in 1918, the vessel ran on the Kennebec River by the Popham Beach Steamboat Company. The new owners changed the vessel’s name to Sabino in honor of Abenaki sagamore, Sabenoa.

In 1927 Sabino was purchased by the Cape Shore Ferry Company in Portland, Maine. From 1927 to 1958 the vessel served the islands of Casco Bay, running out of Portland. For this service the narrow hull was widened with sponsons to make the vessel more stable in the open waters. Although Sabino ‘s configuration and passenger capacity changed through the years, the engine did not. The Steamboat Sabino still has the two-cylinder Paine compound steam engine that was installed in 1908. After a career in Casco Bay, the vessel was operated by the Corbin family out of Newburyport, Massachusetts, on the Merrimack River. The Corbin’s put a lot of time into repairing and bringing the vessel up to Coast Guard regulations for a passenger vessel. From 1971-1973 Sabino operated both day and nighttime jazz cruises on the Merrimack River.

In 1974 Sabino was leased for one year to Mystic Seaport Museum to determine if a steamboat would appeal to the Museum’s patrons. Sabino became a popular attraction, prompting the Museum to purchase the vessel to serve as a working exhibit. Sabino has since operated daily trips during the warmer months on the Mystic River for the enjoyment and education of visitors. Sabino underwent a full restoration from 2014 to 2017, and from 2021 to 2023 the vessel was outfitted with a diesel electric engine. The vessel now operates under electric power with a 95% reduction in carbon emissions, but maintains the ability to run on the steam engine for special occasions.

The Sabino was formally designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

This Small-ship Cruise Line Just Announced 2 New All-suite Vessels Will Join Its Fleet

Windstar Cruises is scheduled to launch Star Seeker in 2025 and Star Explorer in 2026.

mystic sailboat cruise

Courtesy of Windstar Cruises

Boutique small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises is growing its fleet, adding two 224-passenger vessels — both acquisitions from Mystic Cruises —  in the next two years. Star Seeker is slated to make its debut in December 2025 and Star Explorer is scheduled to follow a year later in December 2026.

Star Seeker is under construction, while Star Explorer is currently sailing as Quark Expeditions' World Explorer. B oth ships will be reworked to include signature features of Windstar ships, from a watersports platform to Owners Suites with wraparound balconies to a whirlpool on the bow.

Dining, in particular, will be a main focus on the ships, as Windstar has a partnership with the James Beard Foundation. The ships' dining options spaces will be expanded to include the on-deck Star Grill, the casual Yacht Club café and lounge, and a re-imagined Amphora main dining room, which will now have outdoor seating.

“Our goal was to ensure these ships are unmistakably Windstar, and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this,” Christopher Prelog, Windstar Cruises’ president, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We are thrilled for this expansion, building on the success of our game-changing Star Class in small-ship cruising with guests and travel partners, while offering new experiences. This growth reflects the dedication of our incredible crew and team, allowing us to broaden our destination portfolio and even bring one of our Wind Class sail ships back to Tahiti.”

Though both ships have ice-strengthened hulls capable of sailing in the polar regions, Windstar doesn't currently operate such itineraries, focusing primarily on the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific Islands. But these new ships may open doors to adventures in the years to come.

“As part of our company’s expanding portfolio, Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future ahead," Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of parent company Xanterra Travel Collection, said in a statement. "We’re excited about the possibilities of where Windstar will sail and the opportunities it brings our officers, crew and staff, and our guests.”

Itineraries and booking information for Star Seeker will be announced in June 2024. You can sign up for updates at windstarcruises.com/newships .
