Hands-Free, Eyes-Free, Traffic Information

nj transit travel alerts

Listen to your phone play travel advisories near you, in your direction of travel. As you travel, it will automatically keep you updated. You don't need to register, you don't need to sign up anywhere for anything. Launch the hands-free app before you put your car in drive. The app uses the phone's internal GPS to locate your position and direction of travel. SafeTripNJ will sense when you are approaching a reported roadway conditions weather on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Interstate or New Jersey highway. It will start talking with streaming audio, telling you about active advisories that are ahead.

How it Works

Launch the hands-free SafeTripNJ application before you put your car in drive. You will hear active advisories that are near you. Now put down the phone and focus on driving. There’s nothing on your phone that you need to touch or read. Just listen for travel alerts.

SafeTripNJ will remain on while you drive, automatically activating when you approach an area impacted by a advisory. The app will broadcast any travel alerts for reported conditions within a set mile-range (that you can set for yourself) of your current location.

Conditions will be broadcast once, then the broadcast stream will go quiet until:

  • there is an update to an advisory near you; or
  • you have come within range of another advisory; or
  • a set time period has elapsed (that you choose) and you want to re-hear all advisories that are still in range.

If you get a call, or make a call while a travel alert is playing, the alert will pause, and will resume playing when the call has ended.

User Modifications Features/Experience

You can modify several options. These configurations are saved on your phone.

  • the advisory replay interval
  • the All Points advisory replay interval
  • the range (in miles) for hearing advisories

The application gives you audio player controls for Play, Pause, Stop, Skip, and Replay Current. At any time you can turn off your phone’s GPS. If you do, the app will try to estimate what advisories to broadcast. You can also turn off the GPS from within the app, and then advisories will stop playing.

You do not need to register with the New Jersey Turnpike or NJ511, or subscribe for alerts to use this app. We don’t get or record any uniquely or personally identifying information about you or your phone.

The Technology

The application is based upon Information Logistics' patent-pending "Open Microphone Platform" which is a queue-driven, voice-streaming technology used in combination with your phone's built-in GPS. The data for the system is the NJ511 travel advisory data.

Free, safe, and reliable. SafeTripNJ is New Jersey’s favorite smart phone app for hands-free, real-time traffic information. Download it today!

SafeTrip NJ Android FAQ's

SafeTripNJ was intended for Android versions 4.0 and higher. It should install properly on those versions and subversions of the OS. Try uninstalling any previous versions of SafeTripNJ before installing a new version. Otherwise, a phone reboot before installation may solve the issue.

Several items can be occurring if you are no longer hearing advisories:

  • Make sure you have pressed the "Driving Mode" button on the home screen.
  • You may be in an area where no advisories are in the radius you selected. If you think there should be, try pressing the "replay all" button on the far right of the audio controls. This will reset your connection and replay active advisories near you.
  • Your advisory radius may be set to a low value.
  • You may not be in range of a cell tower to provide data access. Ask a passenger to look at the phone (or when you are stopped) to check for any possible error messages related to the cellular network. Once you are back in range of your network, advisories should resume.
  • Your phone may be simply attempting to acquire a location for your device. If you have wireless location (settings -> location -> use wireless networks) enabled, you can generally get quicker response times as the phone can utilize this less accurate location while it acquires a more solid GPS lock. If you only have GPS location enabled, allow the device sufficient time to acquire a lock.

If the app is still not working as expected, then perhaps there was a problem with the download or installation of the app. When not driving, uninstall the app and re-download and install it in a place where you have access to the internet.

You may be arriving to the incident before it has arrived to our system. If you don't hear an advisory shortly, then there could be other factors.

Your phone may have lost internet access. Some areas have weak cellular coverage, so this is possible from time to time. The app will not work without internet access, but when it loses internet access, it will continue to try to automatically reconnect.

If the app continues to say that there are no current advisories, your phone may have lost internet access. Some areas have weak cellular coverage, so this is possible from time to time. The app will not work without internet access, and when it loses internet access, it will continue to try to automatically reconnect. When SafeTripNJ automatically reconnects, the “No advisories” message will be replayed when there are no advisories. The next time you experience issues please toggle the “Enable Debugging Mode” option on, through the “Settings” page (access “Settings” by tapping your phone’s menu button, and selecting “Settings”), to send us back information so we can better troubleshoot the issue.

You should also check your phone’s GPS Settings-make sure the phone’s GPS is turned on and the phone has a clear view of the sky so your GPS can be read and your location and direction of travel identified. This process may take several minutes. If SafeTripNJ experiences a GPS error, it will be displayed in red on the main screen.

The next time you experience issues please toggle the “Enable Debugging Mode” option on, through the “Settings” page (access “Settings” by tapping your phone’s menu button, and selecting “Settings”), to send us back information so we can better troubleshoot the issue.

If the screen displays that an advisory is playing, but you cannot hear it, turn up your phone’s media volume. There are typically volume controls on the side of the phone, but each phone model may function differently. Check the user guide for your particular phone.

You can click the “home” button and SafeTripNJ will continue to play advisories for you while you use other phone functions. If you just want to turn off the sound from playing, simply toggle the On/Off switch to “Off”. To have sounds resume playing again, toggle it back to the “on” position.

Alternately, you may tap your phone’s back button. A dialogue window will appear with options to Minimize the app (advisories will play in the background), Quit the app (quit and close completely), or cancel (return to app). Select “Minimize”.

From the homepage of the app, tap your phone’s menu button and tap “Quit”.

With the SafeTripNJ app open, access “Settings” by tapping your phone’s menu button, and selecting “Settings”.

You may return back to the main screen by tapping the “Save Changes” button located at the bottom of the Settings page, or you may tap the phone’s Back button.

SafeTripNJ was intended for Android versions 2.2 through 4.0.4. It should install properly on those versions and subversions of the OS, but should also work on later versions. Try uninstalling any previous versions of SafeTripNJ before installing a new version. Otherwise, a phone reboot before installation may solve the issue.

Be sure first that you are still connected to your provider's cellular network. (You need to be connected to receive the sound files). If you are connected, the most likely reason for the playback to stop is that another application began playback of another audio file and halted the SafeTripNJ application's audio stream. If this occurs, simply switch back into the SafeTripNJ application and press "play" to continue SafeTripNJ audio, if hitting play does not resume the audio or you wish to re-hear all advisories, press the "Replay" button on the far right of the audio controls to restart your connection. The next time you experience issues please toggle the “Enable Debugging Mode” option on, through the “Settings” page (access “Settings” by tapping your phone’s menu button, and selecting “Settings”), to send us back information so we can better troubleshoot the issue.

Either you are not in an area where the cellular data network is not available, or permissions for network usage have been disabled for SafeTripNJ. Ensure your network is within range, and permissions have been set to allow access for this application. The next time you experience issues please toggle the “Enable Debugging Mode” option on, through the “Settings” page (access “Settings” by tapping your phone’s menu button, and selecting “Settings”), to send us back information so we can better troubleshoot the issue.

Yes. You add 2 additional advisory types to your audio stream: Construction, and Large/Heavy Truck. By default, these advisory types are not selected for you. They generally do not impact traffic. If you wish to include or exclude either of these advisory types from your broadcast, you may do so through the settings page (access “Settings” by tapping your phone’s menu button, and selecting “Settings”). Tap on the Advisory Type Preferences button, and check or un-check your selections.

Have a passenger dial, or dial when you are not driving. Tap the “Additional Features” link at the bottom of the main screen. You will be prompted to acknowledge you are not driving. A listing of “More Features” will be displayed. Select “Emergency Numbers”. A list of important NJ Turnpike/GSP/ACE/DOT numbers is displayed. Tap on the number you wish to call. You may return to the main screen by tapping “Return to advisory playback” at the top of the Emergency Numbers page, or by pressing your phone’s Back button.

Have a passenger operate the phone, or operate the phone when you are not driving. Tap the “Additional Features” link at the bottom of the main screen. You will be prompted to acknowledge you are not driving. A listing of “More Features” will be displayed. Tap the “Send Feedback” option. Enter your name and your comments in the appropriate boxes. If you would like a reply, include your e-mail address. Click “Submit” to send your comment.

Depending on the version of Bluetooth you have and the devices you own, the ability to hear media via Bluetooth can vary from “not at all” to “full support”.

A2DP Bluetooth devices support media playback, and some vehicles contain special Bluetooth settings that will allow your device to play media files through your built-in stereo system.

SafeTripNJ attempts to play via Bluetooth through compatible setups, but unfortunately not all Bluetooth users/devices will work well.

Not for tourists

Good app to buy tickets but schedules do not reflect reality. Disconnect between real schedule and the app. Waited 2:30 hours to get to a low service stop. App said there was a bus every 20 minutes

Doesn’t let me enter a postal code

Visiting from Canada, when adding payment info it would not let me enter letter characters that are required in Canadian postal codes. I tried also converting using the standard postal/zip conversion and that did not work either. Disappointing, seems like it could be a good app but totally useless to me.

Crashes when paying with PayPal

App crashes whenever I attempt to pay with PayPal. Also, no explanation of what it means to "activate" a ticket just purchased. No FAQ.

ICYMI: NJ Transit Announces Service Suspensions For Monday, February 1St

Due To Winter Storm NJ TRANSIT Will Temporarily Suspend All Service Except Atlantic City Rail Line Which Will Operate On A Regular Weekday Schedule

NEWARK, NJ — All NJ TRANSIT buses, rail (except Atlantic City Rail Line), light rail and Access Link service will be temporarily suspended systemwide for the entire service day on Monday, February 1st due to the significant expected impacts of the snow storm. Service is suspended out of an abundance of caution for the safety of NJ TRANSIT customers and employees.

Given the volume of snow predicted throughout the state and the timing of the storm when accumulations will be highest beginning in mid-morning, there is a significant risk of not being able to get customers back to their origin points later in the day as the storm intensifies. Further, particularly on bus, roads need to remain clear for local, county and State forces to remove snow so service can resume on Tuesday as soon as it is safe to do so.

Regular weekday service will operate on the Atlantic City Rail Line on Monday, as long as weather conditions safely allow.  Customers are encouraged to only use the ACRL for essential travel only. Customers should closely monitor social media, MyTransit alerts or njtransit.com for the latest service information. Customers may see trains and light rail vehicles operating during the service day tomorrow, those cars are operating without passengers to keep catenary wires and rail lines free of snow and ice.

NJ TRANSIT’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be open and closely monitoring weather forecasts and conditions as the storm develops. Key personnel will monitor any impacts to the system throughout the duration of the storm.

NJ TRANSIT Preparations for Winter Weather

Rail Operations

  • Rail cars and locomotives have been "winterized," a process that includes checking onboard heating systems, ventilation, thermostats, weather stripping and electronic components, as well as changing locomotive filters and fuel from a summer blend to a winter blend.
  • NJ TRANSIT’s preventative maintenance program also includes the inspection and winter maintenance of more than 750 switches and switch heaters, overhead wire systems, 12 moveable bridges and wayside power at storage yards and terminals.
  • Two jet-engine-powered snow blowers are available to remove ice and snow from tracks and critical switching areas. In addition, all locomotives are equipped with snowplows to clear snow from the rails.
  • NJ TRANSIT Rail Operations has approximately 20,000 pounds of salt on hand with the ability to obtain an additional 100,000 pounds, if needed.
  • In addition, our year-round tree trimming program proactively minimizes downed trees or limbs along the right-of-way and on our overhead electrical system, personnel are on standby to quickly respond to reports of trees or limbs that could damage overhead wires or prevent safe passage of trains.  Our year-round tree trimming program is part of our preventative maintenance program.

Bus Operations

  • Bus maintenance personnel have checked the heating systems, engine fluids, tires, windshield wipers, doors and airbrake systems on NJ TRANSIT's 2,200 buses.
  • Bus snow-fighting equipment has been readied and ice/snow-inhibiting supplies have been restocked for winter to keep 52 bus loops, terminals and lots cleared throughout the state.
  • NJ TRANSIT Bus Operations has 525 tons of bulk salt on standby statewide, with each of its 16 garages stocked with bags of salt.

Light Rail Operations

  • Snowplows are ready to clear station platforms and park/ride lots.
  • Switch heaters have been tested throughout NJ TRANSIT’s three light rail systems.
  • Necessary supplies such as calcium chloride, snow shovels, and scrapers are available and strategically located on the system.
  • Snow blowers and backup generators have been checked to ensure they are in working order.
  • Subcontractors are under contract to assist work crews in clearing all light rail stations, walkways, and park/ride facilities.
  • Management staff for all three lines will be coordinating with local municipalities to discuss snow removal in the light rail’s downtown ‘street running’ territory.

Stations and Terminals

  • All rail stations equipped with heaters have been inspected to ensure that they are in proper working order.
  • Staff will monitor platform conditions to ensure safe walking conditions.

D elays and cancelations are at the heart of frustrations for commuters who rely on New Jersey Transit - so what can be done to make the system more reliable?

Passengers say NJ Transit delays happen far too frequently for people trying to get home after a long day at work. Such was the case Monday night .

"The lack of care and urgency to solve a problem and the disregard for the effects of it is just unacceptable," said Emily Gfroehrer, who was impacted by the NJ Transit delay on Monday.

Gfroehrer's and her fiancé Liam Fennecken's NJ Transit train ride from Hamilton, New Jersey to Penn Station should have taken two hours tops.

"It ended up being 11... 10 hours on the train," Fennecken said. "Twelve if you count us getting back home."

They were among thousands who faced delays and cancelations as rail service between New York and Trenton was suspended for several hours. The problem was overhead wire issues , according to NJ Transit.

Patience wore thin as some chose to get off the trains altogether.

Monday's issues were extreme, but NJ Transit users say they know to expect service delays, in general.

"I do plan for it. So when I go, I always give myself an hour for whatever might happen on NJ Transit," said commuter Jesse Addy.

"Single lights are always out. Late, dirty, canceled, on standby. Everything. You can't depend on them," said commuter John Cunningham.

The frustration is only mounting as the NJ Transit Board approved a 15% fare increase that's set to go into effect in July.

"15% is not a small number, especially when you're already paying $20," Fennecken said.

Jaqi Cohen works for a non-profit dedicated to improving public transportation throughout the Tri-State area. She says changes need to be made to make sure NJ Transit is more dependable for those who rely on it.

"We want to see New Jersey invest in transit the same way that New York invests in the MTA and that other states invest in their public transit services," Cohen said. "New Jersey is one of the only states in the country with a transit agency of its size that has no dedicated funding for transit. It's up to the budget whims of the legislature and the governor every year to decide what the budget will be that year for New Jersey Transit."

NJ Transit study targets $600M in budget cuts, expansion and reform

A $6.7 million NJ Transit feasibility study would examine making up to 20% in budget cuts, propose how to expand service and suggest some early “quick win” ideas with a goal to deliver a full report in under a year.

Those are among the many aspects of the state’s public transit system that the North Highland Company will have to study and make recommendations about under a contract signed on April 10 with the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The same company conducted the 2018 audit of NJ Transit ordered by Gov. Phil Murphy and delivered that October. NJDOT was required to solicit competition from at least three firms and requested quotes from Cohn Reznick LLP, Deloitte & Touche LLP and North Highland, acording to the governor’s office.

The agency realignment study was proposed a full year ago by then-state Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti in response to a predicted fiscal deficit forecast to hit $956 million by mid-2026.

The contract between North Highland and the Department of Transportation was released by the governor’s office Thursday evening.

In it’s response to the DOT, North Highland proposed delivering “quick wins” by the fifth month of the project that would be identified and gathered during a three-month assessment phase.

“Our plan is to wrap up the assessment and issue the Feasibility Study Report at the end of week 42 – a full ten weeks before the scheduled conclusion of the first year of the contract, giving you the opportunity to begin implementing change before the year is out,” North Highland’s proposal said.

Among the tasks requested for North Highland in the feasibility are:

An overall goal to make a 10% operating budget reduction for Fiscal Year 2025, and an additional 10% Fiscal Year 2026 cut. That comes to $600 million in cuts over two years based on the proposed $3 billion fiscal year 2025 operating budget.

The DOT requires the reductions are sustainable year-over-year and have a reasonable path to be implemented.

North Highland also must evaluate all reasonable alternatives to provide for an expanded/enhanced public transit system. Costs, benefits, and impacts of alternatives are to be evaluated.

NJ Transit’s existing services and those provided by other organizations and agencies in the state would be reviewed to determine the level of additional/enhanced transit services required.

A financial plan for operations and capital, including funding sources and a phased implementation time table also are required.

Those areas were outlined in 2023 by Gutierrez-Scaccetti, who is now Murphy’s chief of staff, to increase service “to the highest demand customers” but not leave “customers on the lower demand lines behind,” and look at ways to increase recreational travel revenue.

North Highland also will be asked for suggestions how to make the NJ Transit experience better for customers.

Areas include technology improvement to the NJ Transit app, how performance is reported to the public, “physical station, platform and car infrastructure” and the feasibility to make greater use of cross-honoring tickets when service is delayed or suspended on rail bus or light rail.

Absent from those tasks are two key rider complaints about prompt communication of service disruptions and how they are handled.

Social media was ripe with complaints about Tuesday evening’s suspension of Northeast Corridor line service after an Amtrak Acela train damaged overhead wires, bringing service to a standstill.

NJ Transit’s leadership structure would be reexamined for changes to the board of directors, which was expanded to 13 members by the 2018 reform law, in addition to executive staff and divisions. Personnel hiring and protocols with goals to attract talent would be looked at, as well.

Last year, Gutierrez-Scaccetti suggested streamlining NJ Transit’s five corporate entities that include the NJ Transit Corp., NJ Transit Bus operations, NJ Transit Rail Operations, NJ Transit Mercer and NJ Transit Morris, Inc.

NJ Transit’s current funding sources would be reviewed and an evaluation made whether they are adequate to meet both the agency’s current operating needs and capital upgrades.

NJ Transit’s financial and operating relationship with Amtrak, including NJ Transit payment for use of the Northeast Corridor Line and Penn Station New York and how issues are handled, is also part of the study.

The DOT also called for public involvement, including focus groups, surveys, public open house meeting to get suggestions, and “stakeholder interviews” with “an NJT approved list of stakeholders, suggested by the contractor.”

To accomplish all of this, North Highland proposed using five firms including itself and two others with transportation backgrounds, a public affairs company to draft the report and a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant.

North Highland boasted it has completed similar work at eight of the top 10 transit agencies in the U.S. and with others around the world.
