Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp
Lodge location Serengeti Migration Area
First row seats for the Great Migration.
Taking a whole new perspective on the term ‘glamping’ by adding extra luxury whilst also being conscious of the environment. Explore the beauty of the Serengeti plains and then relax with delicious dishes before settling within the comfort of your private tented accommodation. Each day brings a new adventure and a new memory at Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp.
At a glance
Great migration, take to the skies, luxurious tented rooms, game drives, explore on foot, nearest airport, bring the family, stay together, sensational wildlife, cocktail ready, get as close to the migration action as possible.
Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp brings the harmony and beauty of the grasslands to its beautifully designed canvas camp where you will have everything that you need. Designed so as not to disturb the beauty of the plains, it adds luxury to the term camping. Recline in the lounge and bar area of the main tent, with all sides open for incredible panoramic views of the Serengeti. Sip on a cocktail or whiskey from the fully stocked bar as you watch the African plains come alive with the wildlife that inhabits the area. If you fancy enjoying an evening with a glass of wine and your nose in a book, you can spend some time in the library tent that has a variety of volumes from different genres. You may even want to look through the pages of one of the informational volumes that have the history of the area and the animals that call it their home. You can enjoy your meals in either the indoor dining area or the outdoor area. You will get to taste the flavours of Africa from the onsite chefs who use local produce and watch the landscape whilst you eat. If you fancy taking part in a sundowner, you can head to the outdoor fireplace with its seating area. Take some snacks and drinks as you watch the sunset and the African night sky light up with the sparkling stars.
You will stay in one of the six open-plan Meru tents that each have en-suite bathrooms and have been designed to be environmentally conscious. Each tent is stylishly simple and made for supreme comfort. Each fitted with a large and luscious double bed, or the twin-room family tent, so you can look out over the beautiful plains from the comfort of your bed when you wake up and when you go to sleep. There is also a little open area at the front of the canvassed tent for you to take chairs out onto and enjoy the glorious views that surround you. The en-suite bathrooms are fitted with safari-style bucket showers and flushable eco-toilets for minimal environmental impact, whilst also providing hot water on demand.
Activities at Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp
Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp always seeks to find the best spot for witnessing the Great Migration where you will see thousands of wildebeest in herds as they travel across the Serengeti. As you ride in your 4x4, you will have the chance to see the plains dotted with creatures, and maybe even watch the dramas of predator against prey, giving you memories that you will never forget. You will also have the choice to go in shared or private vehicles during any game drives. With both options, you will have an expert guide who will take you to all the spots on the savannah that give the best opportunity to see wildlife. Learn about how to track different animals and herds, learn about the conservation of the area and have the chance to get up close with the magnificent creatures that inhabit the area.
Another great opportunity not to miss when you visit the Serengeti is to head out on a stargazing trip. Head out into the plains as the sunsets and watch the stars come alive in the African night sky. Learn all about the constellations and how to use the stars for navigation. If you want to see the grasslands from a unique vantage point, head out on a hot-air balloon safari (at an additional cost). You will soar in the sky amongst the birds and clouds, watch the herds and packs gallop across the plains before you enjoy a sumptuous bush breakfast upon landing.
Tripadvisor comments Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp
I last visited this camp 18 months ago, when it had a different manager and was set up right in the north of the Serengeti. I'm pleased to report that the camp is every bit as as good as it was previously; impeccable attention to detail, delicious food, ultra efficient and incredibly friendly staff. ... The sleeping tent is luxurious and the beds are most comfortable. I can also vouch for the waterproofness of the structure; the camp was subjected to a ferocious storm one night while we were there (which sounded like were sleeping under a waterfall) and there wasn't a hint of a leak. End of February and first half of March are interesting times to go - a lot of young animals around, and if you are lucky you might even see a calving wildebeest. Highly recommended! mark121 from London, UK
We had an incredible 3 nights at the Serengeti Safari Camp. ... We loved every minute. Our second day he took us on an all day safari to see the wildebeest migration - what a treat! The camp was beautiful - frat scenery, spotless camp and tents, amazing food and service. We highly recommend Serengeti Safari Camp and Nomad Tanzania. Also, we had Nomad as a guide company for the Ngorongoro Crater. Sancoro was our guide and again, he was amazing! Wonderful day and experience. Can’t recommend this company enough. Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp
As raw and as real as it gets.
Facilities tabs
The only real competitor to Sayari camp and the other Asilia camps in northern Tanzania, Nomad Serengeti Camp has really led the way for the last 15 years or so in the Serengeti. Moving seasonally through the year, according to the movement of the herds, the camp is a bit more of a basic affair than that of Sayari, but this gives the camp an expeditionary feel and really does mane that you are always in the heart of the action. With a permanent camp under construction in the north of the Serengeti, this is a great choice.
The original concept behind the Nomad Tented Camps was to give people as good a safari experience as was possible. Able to break camp in a matter of hours and move on, we are glad that, today, they have stuck with this philosophy. As the world of safari has become more and more focused on building luxury camps with spas and swimming pools, we are glad that there are still some companies that offer the raw experience of getting out into the bush and really absorbing the sounds and smells.
Rooms and layout
The rooms and communal areas in Nomad Serengeti are fairly simple with the emphasis on getting out into nature rather than spending all your time in your room. Not that this is to say that they are uncomfortable, but bucket showers and long drop loos are not for everyone...although, even after a week, you will hardly notice the difference from what you are used to...I think I even got hotter and more hot water for my showers than I get in my London flat!
As mentioned, however, the focus is on the safari and with some of the best and longest serving guides in East Africa, all trained to walk and drive, you are assured to have one of the best safari experiences possible for the money. Definitely one of our preferred operators in the Serengeti!
MORE PHOTOS >>
The mobile camp was also very good and Musa an excellent guide. This was a realistic bush experience. Given that the wildebeest heard was early so we had seen 50000+ already, not huge new experiences there but also really positive. I know the Keare’s loved their lion and cheetah experiences during our two days apart - we had seen quite a few of both on our previous safari and as you know I wanted to see the wildebeest, so no regrets with our choice.
Some of our favourite sightings in Grumeti: Group of 14 lions, including many cubs, 20+ hyena family, 2 close elephant encounters more wildebeest, owl and other bird life, dozens of hippo and crocodiles
- Bill and Family, June 2019 Rating:
Our guide, Chedi, in the Serengeti was overwhelmingly fantastic-truly made our time there so special. We’ve said that if we ever go back we would do Nomads the whole time and just ask him to be our guide everywhere!

Incredible, and closer to the wildlife than we expected. Literally wildebeest right in the camp! The staff was wonderful, but our driver Ali was truly world class. * * * * * - K Corner
SSC was by far the best and I’d give it more than 5!! It was exactly as I had hoped. Completely open to nature and relaxed yet luxurious. When we arrived it was just WOW! Our tent was perfect and had an incredible view! The common space was fantastic visually and the atmosphere it created I will never forget. Everything here worked like clockwork and the attention to detail was superb. Early morning wake up calls with coffee, game drives starting exactly on time with blankets and hot water bottles, amazing laundry service!, bedtime turn down and hot water bottles and the list goes on. Everything was thought about and it all happened without us even seeing someone do it! John the camp manager was fantastic and chatted to us at length every evening and we really enjoyed he’s stories. Mussa our guide was fantastic and seemed by magic to produce everything we asked for......lion, leopard, rhino, river crossings. The food here too was perfect and again I was treated to another cake and singing! Again the staff couldn’t do enough for us and were super friendly. * * * * * - V. Ralph

ACCOMMODATION DETAILS
The camp is located on the southern Serengeti plains between January and March with easy access to the main migrating herds. From there it moves to the Moru Kopjes area in central Serengeti, and then into the Western Corridor as the mass of the migration moves west and north. The migration patterns can be unpredictable throughout this time of year, but the wildebeest rut (May) and the crossing of the Grumeti River (June/July) are spectacular.
From August the camp moves to the quieter northern Serengeti close to either the Mara or Bologonja Rivers, offering great general game viewing and crossings of either of the two rivers. Towards late November the camp starts to head south again, arriving on the southern Serengeti Plains around mid-December.
Nomad runs a highly ethical safari operation and each of the six tents are light in their footprint but with everything anyone might need in their own bush home: spacious tents with comfortable beds, a roomy dressing area, and an ensuite bathroom with long drop loo and traditional, safari style bucket showers with hot and cold water on demand.
Only a short stroll from each tent is the candlelit mess/library and dining tent. The chefs are absolute wizards at preparing excellent meals in the midst of the bush. Guests eat together with the guides and the atmosphere is always friendly and sociable with different stories of the days safari activities or tales from further afield.
Nomad Safaris employ Tanzania’s finest safari guides who have traveled the length and breadth of the Serengeti eco-system and they take pride in finding the more remote areas that are off the beaten track but still offer great game viewing.
Every couple, or group, have their own private 4WD vehicle and guide, so the days are yours to plan, with lunch in camp, or ‘on the hoof’ depending on how you feel.
This really is a top quality wildlife experience.

I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.
Many thanks for a truly great holiday! Nyerere National Park was a great success as we saw the wild dogs on 2 occasions and some great lion kills. In fact we saw a pride of 10 lion including cubs within 10 mins of landing in the Nyerere National Park! Zanzibar was wonderful! The sunshine hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely.

Serengeti Safari Camp
Serengeti Safari Camp is a traditional mobile tented camp which moves throughout the season from the grassy plain to rolling wooden hills and dramatic granite kopjes, within Serengeti national park. The camp is “semi nomadic” and built in classic safari style, with only six comfortable walk-in tents, each with its own en-suite bathroom, flush toilet and bucket shower.
The camp changes its location every few weeks but not during the guest’s stay. Serengeti Safari Camp movements are planned so as to be within reach of the wildebeest migration, which cannot easily be guaranteed due to the unpredictable nature, and weather conditions.
Serengeti Safari Camp offers an authentic opportunity to view the Serengeti wildebeest migration and the substantial herds of resident game. The camp shadows the migration, enabling guests to get as close as possible to the migration.
Serengeti Migration Camp never settles for less, because it is a canvas home-from-home and its indomitable crew are on the move year-in, year-out from one ideal Serengeti site to another, led by the mass movements of the wildebeest migration as they search for greener pastures.
Serengeti Safari Camp also offers an excellent opportunity of “Out of Africa” experience, where guests stay in a tented camp, rising up to the sunrise, and listening to the bird calls with a cup of hot tea or coffee brought to individual tents, and sitting around the campfire mulling over the day’s wildlife sightings in the evenings.
Accommodation
Serengeti Safari Camp brings the harmony and beauty of the grasslands to its wonderfully designed canvas camp where you will have everything that you need.
The Camp has six open-plan Meru tents, each having comfortable beds, room dressing area, en-suite bathrooms with a low water usage bio-degradable flush toilet, and traditional safari style bucket showers with hot and cold water on demand. One tent is designed as a family tent
Each tent is simply designed and made for supreme comfort. All rooms are either fitted with a large and luscious double bed, or the twin-room family tent, so you can view the stunning plains from the comfort of your bed when you wake up and when you go to sleep.
The tents also have a little open area at the front, for guests to take their chairs out and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the surrounding
Serengeti Safari Camp is designed not to disturb the beauty of the plains, it is very simple and small but with plenty of unique details which makes your stay comfortable. There is a library and lounge tent, bar area as well as a dining tent where delicious camp cuisine is served.
Serengeti Safari Camp is not suited for young children under the age of 8. The camp also gives room for food and meal time adjustments so as to suit children, whereas babysitting can also be arranged for those who need it. The camp restricts children under the age of 12 from other activities such as walking or fly camping activities.
Game drives:
Serengeti Safari Camp offers an opportunity for both shared and private game drives where you can pre-book a private 4×4 vehicle with an experienced Tanzanian driver-guide to allow a complete flexibility to tailor your own game drive safari interest. There are opportunities to see great wildebeests and Zebra migration, alongside other predators such as Lions, leopards among others. You also have high chances of spotting various bird species
You can also go for walking safaris, bush picnics or head out on a star gazing trip as the sunsets and watch the stars come alive in the African night sky as well as learning how to use the stars for navigation.
Hot Air Balloon
However, the camp also provides hot air balloon safaris where you can see both wildlife and the grasslands from a unique vantage point (at an additional cost).
Explore and discover the beauty of the Serengeti plains and then relax with delicious dishes before settling within the comfort of your tented accommodation. You can enjoy your meals in either the indoor dining area or the outdoor area. You will get to taste the flavors of Africa from the onsite chefs who use local produce.
The camp also provides snacks and drinks as you watch the sunset and the African night sky light up with the sparkling stars as well as some cocktail or whiskey from the fully stocked bar.

Standing proud above the plains, around a tumble of giant boulders.
You can see from this outcrop, the Kogakuria Kopje, for miles and miles. Over a million wildebeest cross these plains on their way to dodge the jaws of death in the Mara River, just down the track. On the Lamai Wedge, bristling with mammals all year round, there’s never a dull moment. Above it all, our beautiful kopje is a sacred wildlife haven – and our mission is to act as its faithful guardians.

Enhancing lives at Lamai
From enhancing dynamic careers to working with local communities and conservation projects, here are some inspiring stories from our award-winning camp in Northern Serengeti.
Life long learning & growth
Creating career paths
Poacher turned walking scout
Not only does his smile light up the world, but’s he’s a Nomad walking scout, on his way to becoming a guide. His incredible wilderness skills come from his previous life as a bushmeat poacher. We count ourselves very lucky indeed to have him among our Nomad herd.
Paulina’s journey to Lamai
Nomad sponsored Paulina’s journey through vocational training and an internship in camp – and she’s now a full-time part of the Lamai team.
Wildlife education
Finding talent in key conservation areas
Living and farming on the edge of the Serengeti means human-wildlife conflict is inevitable. Kichawi is determined to help his family and community deal with the challenges that come from living alongside wildlife.
Supporting schools
Free school meals in Mbilikili
Knowing the importance of the best start to early learning, we have launched our meal-a-day programme into Mbilikili, a remote village on the edge of northern Serengeti. This provides over 100 children one square meal a day and the best possible start on their education journey.
Conservation & environment
Supporting environmental projects
Conservation support for Serengeti De-snaring
Nomad is very proud to be one of the first operators to engage with this conservation programme. For each night spent at Lamai we donate $1 to the programme and look to top-up with further donations from our shop and massage profits. To date, we have donated over $10,000 but more importantly facilitated a programme that is making a serious dent in the illegal trapping and poaching of wildlife in the Serengeti.
Style and substance across our camps
Since we started, we've always made a point of using local suppliers and artisans to furnish our award-winning camps. Comfy sofas and shaggy lampshades that adorn Lamai’s lounge are made by a lady named Eliza. She is a local basket weaver whose talent was spied by Jo Cooke, Nomad interior designer extraordinaire. Jo worked with Eliza to perfect her design and workmanship, and now our camps are filled with pouffes, placemats and woven wonders of all sorts. Not only do they represent local craftmanship, but they also support a mother who can now send her children to school.
Eco-friendly sisal brushes made with love
Small details that make a big difference.
We're immensely proud of these humble cleaning devices: the next step on our mission to get our kitchens plastic-free. We met Fatma, a lovely lady who works in a sisal factory in Tanga on the Tanzanian coastline. She introduced us to Abdul, who is a woodworker. We set them the task of creating the perfect scourer and brush with handle and interchangeable head - and after a bit of back and forth, they nailed it.
Northern Tanzania safaris
Our Northern Tanzania camps are in enviable locations that mean we can take you deeper into this epic wilderness and create life changing experiences.

Entamanu Moody, Joseph, Lengai from the village & Emmanuel the guide Moody and his team were extremely welcoming. The food was truly excellent, the location spectacular Lamai James, Nriko, Seth & Laurence the guide Most notably the whole team were kind, happy, welcoming & above all extremely helpful. During our stay we had a mild medical issue which James and his team went above and beyond to help with, nothing was too much trouble and their assistance was invaluable. Laurence our guide was excellent; entertaining, careful and thoughtful. It is obvious how much he enjoys his role and his extensive knowledge, enthusiastically imparted, created a magical and informative experience for us and the children. On top of this, they even went to the trouble of celebrating one of our birthdays with a cake, a full team song and lots of good cheer. The camp itself is extremely stylish, comfortable and generous with everything you need and without feeling excessive. The location is breathtaking and the food delicious - neither can be properly appreciated from photos. Although they have a pattern to the day that works, they make sure you know they are flexible to accommodate anything. The whole team are a huge success, we thank them profusely and wish them the very best for the future.
