The Downs in Summer
We are celebrating biodiversity and encouraging wildlife back into our lives. There are things you can get involved in, on campus and at home. Why not simply get outside, connect with nature and explore our award winning green campuses .
Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet. It plays a significant role in human health and being outside and immersed in nature has been shown to improve our mental wellbeing. Also. the more connected we feel to nature, the more likley we are to develop pro-environmental behaviours.
But Earth’s biodiversity is in decline, which threatens both nature and humans alike. The main drivers in the loss of biodiversity are climate change, invasive species, over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution and agriculture.
There are a whole new range of nature activities on the app Green Rewards . Complete them, earn points and get rewarded.
Plantlife’s No Mow May campaign asks everyone to lock away lawn mowers and leave gardens and parks to bloom and go wild for a month. The less that grass is mown, the more pollinators it will attract.
Following on from previous years success, more space on campus is being left unmown to benefit wildlife. Pathways through will allow visitors to walk through and enjoy the flowering display and buzz of the insects.
Help us to conduct surveys of the areas to establish the change in levels of flora and fauna before and after the campaign. Get in touch to find out more.
You can also take part at home by changing your mowing habits to benefit wildlife . Leave your own lawn to grow wild then survey it at the end of the month to how many flowers have benefitted from being left alone, and in turn, the number of insects they can support.
Hedgehog Awareness Week (5-11 May)
Over the last 20 years, hedgehog numbers in rural areas have plummeted by 50%, and in urban gardens by 30%. In response, passionate members of the university formed the UoN Hedgehog Friendly Campus Group . They raise awareness of the plight of the hedgehog and taking action across our campuses.
Hedgehog Awareness Week highlights the problems hedgehogs face and how you can help them. ‘Welcome Wildlife!’ by creating a space for wildlife in your own gardens or green spaces and encouraging others to do the same.
Watch this video by Hannah from the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Group to find out more about about hedgehogs, the threats they face and how we can all help them to thrive.

U of I Locations: Moscow (Main Campus)
From the moment you step on campus, you’ll understand why the University of Idaho has been named the most beautiful college in the state . Iconic buildings are connected by tree-filled green spaces, walkable paths and welcoming plazas. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a friendly smile and wave from a peer or professor, especially on the historic Hello Walk.
Our community extends way beyond campus. Moscow is a tight-knit town of about 25,000 people, full of vibrant activities, businesses and events that love to welcome college students. You’ll find incredible opportunities for recreation and exploration in the surrounding area, too.
Want to see it all for yourself? Plan your campus visit today .
Life on Campus
Whether you live in the residence halls , a fraternity or sorority or off-campus, you’ll be minutes away from your classes and places to study and play.
There’s always something to do: grab a snack in the Idaho Student Union Building , check out a book from the U of I Library 's more than 2 million holdings, take in the beauty of nature in the Arboretum and Botanical Garden , watch a play in the Hartung Theater or a game in the ICCU Arena , take a fitness class in the Student Recreation Center , catch a Vandal Entertainment -sponsored concert and so much more.
A True College Town
Venture only a few minutes off campus and you’ll be in downtown Moscow. It’s no wonder Seattle Magazine called it “a college town with a soul that shines through year-round” — the calendar is packed with festivals, cultural events and community gatherings like our award-winning farmers’ market on Main Street.
No matter what you like to do, you’ll find an activity to fall in love with . Experience a local art museum or theater production, dance to a live band at a street fair or a local coffee shop, dress in period garb for the Moscow Renaissance Fair or enter a local 5K run or bike race. Volunteer opportunities abound with local nonprofits that support the arts, sustainability, youth and children, the LGBTQ community, health care and more.
And did we mention food? You’ll find a huge co-op with natural and organic options, cozy pubs and coffee shops with Pacific Northwest vibes, locally owned restaurants with cuisines from around the world, and funky hole-in-the-wall spots for affordable college-town snacks.
A Hub For Outdoor Adventure
Moscow sits at the heart of the Palouse, a one-of-a-kind landscape of rolling hills and scenic vistas. We’re surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers full of opportunities for adventure , whether you love hiking, biking, camping, fishing or just taking in a gorgeous sunset. You’ll experience all four seasons in North Idaho, too — so bring your sunscreen for a late-summer rafting trip and your parka for skiing, snowboarding or ice skating in the winter.
Gain outdoor skills and connect with other adventurous students through the U of I Outdoor Program . Want to take your own excursion? Rent equipment through the Outdoor Rental Center .

How to register
My career journey has been highly unplanned! My first degree was in Biochemistry and it was only after undertaking the England and Wales law conversion course (then CPE, now PGDL) and qualifying as a Solicitor that I realised international law, and specifically IHRL, was the most interesting part of law that I really wanted to work in. Each opportunity has tended to open the door in some way for the next- albeit that moving between the private sector, international organisations, government, civil society, and academia is still nowhere near as straightforward as it should be…. Dr Steven Malby Deputy Head of the Human Rights Department in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
Growing up in apartheid South Africa had a profound impact on the future trajectory of my career. Over time and participating in the transition to constitutional democracy in South Africa helped me to understand how law can both construct social injustices, but also play a significant role in dismantling these injustices. My career has been dedicated to exploring in ways in which both the South African legal system and international law can be more responsive to systemic human rights violations. Professor Sandra Liebenberg H.F. Oppenheimer Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Stellenbosch Law Faculty
From my career, the two most important lessons I have learned are to truly listen to what people are saying, and to be guided by your own internal sense of justice in any situation without fear or favour. Dr Matthew Gillett Chair Rapporteur for the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention/ Lecturer at Essex Law School
