This comprehensive guide to the World Padel Tour explains everything you need to know about the competition. Join us to learn what it is, how it works, and how you can watch it!

What is the World Padel Tour?

The World Padel Tour is a professional padel competition that the International Padel Federation organizes. The WPT is a circuit of international tournaments for both women and men.

It gathers the world’s best padel players and has its headquarters in Spain, where 12 of the 16 events in the calendar of 2021 will take place.

What sport is WPT

What sport is World Padel Tour?

The sport played on WPT is padel, which is sometimes called padel tennis. Padel is a racquet sport. The sport differs from paddle tennis, which is common in the United States and Canada. On an enclosed court about 25% smaller than a tennis court, you play padel in doubles.

Check out our padel guide if you want to learn more about the sport.

World Padel Tour (WPT) started in 2012 after two years of intensive work. Padel Pro Tour (PPT), the first international competition for professional Padel tournaments, was to be replaced by a new circuit.

Over the past ten years, padel has exploded in Spain, and each event has drawn at least 20 thousand fans in stadiums with a capacity of over 5 thousand spectators.

This number is ever-increasing, as the Estrella Damm Master Finals 2017, with 25 thousand spectators during the five-day competition, was the biggest tournament in the sport’s history.

In terms of popularity, padel finished third in Spain’s top sports list, after football and basketball, and before the more traditional sports of handball and futsal.

International Padel Federation

Founded in 1991, the International Padel Federation (FIP) is the world governing body for the sport. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting all forms of Padel around the world.

The World Padel Tour (WPT) is the official international professional circuit recognized by FIP. It gives the WPT federated standing for its tournaments and the organization is responsible for the global ranking list.

World Padel Tour Circuit

The WPT circuit

As the international popularity of padel grows, so does the professional padel circuit worldwide. The best players are now traveling the world to compete in the padel world tour.

The padel WPT has been played in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Brazil. However, as we can see from the World Padel Tour schedule 2021 , an increasing number of countries other than Spain and South America will be participating.

On the circuit, recent tournaments have was held in Sweden, the UK, France, Belgium, and Dubai. In 2017, the professional tour visited Miami, Florida, for its first time in the USA.

The 2021 World Padel Tour calendar includes 26 official competitions in six countries, making it the most extensive season in the professional circuit’s history.

WPT Tournaments

Tournaments

Between 18 and 26 WPT tournaments are held annually, plus a final where the top-ranked pairs compete. The participating players travel to different cities around the world to collect points and qualify for the final tournament, where the top eight ranked pairs compete after the season has concluded.

The padel WPT features both men and women. However, the number of women’s WPT championships has traditionally been about half that of men’s, debated.

Six types of tournaments

World Padel Tour 2021 is hosting six levels of tournaments. From the FIP tournaments, each successive level has higher ranking points and prize money.

The first tiers have a lower entry-level, which is a good way for lower-ranked players to earn points.

Tournaments FIP

Master final, exhibition tournaments.

As part of the branding and reaching out to the world, the WPT organizes exhibition tournaments.

Knokke, a municipality in the Flanders region in Belgium, hosted the first exhibition of the 2021 season in august. It was possible to see some of the top padel players in the world, including Paquito Navarro, Martín Di Nenno, Fede Chingotto, Juan Tello, Las Martas, Paula Josemaría and Ari Sánchez.

They also arranged matches between the WPT players and other Belgians, tests, and shows.

The International Padel Federation and the World Padel Tour have taken an important step toward globalizing the competitive structures of padel.

They added FIP GOLD and agreed to loosen ranking restrictions, allowing more players to participate in the competition to offer a more ambitious competition offering that will enable players to earn more points and increase their revenues.

They have decided to change the Challenger tournaments to improve the competition. As a result, for the first time in WPT history, the six events of the 2021 calendar will be played in both categories: men and women.

As a result of the redesigned Challengers, young players will earn more points, increase income, and gain visibility.

With 14 tournaments scheduled for 2021, the World Padel Tour Open is the most common type. Ten Open tournaments are held in Spain, while the other four take place in Sweden, Mexico, and Italy.

In 2021, there will be five WPT Masters tournaments. There are three in the Spanish cities of Marbella, Barcelona, and Valladolid. The other two WPT Masters take place in Cascais and Buenos Aires.

WPT Master Final is the last event of the season, and it is a special event. Its format and the fact that it brings together the best 16 male and 12 female players of the season make it unique.

Following the draw of pairings, two groups, A and B, will be formed by four male and three female pairings. Everyone will face everyone in groups.

The men’s and women’s top two pairings from each group will take each other on in the semifinals after three rounds. First from Group A vs. Second from Group B and First from Group B vs. Second from Group A.

Four days of world-class padel and 24 matches later, we’ll find out who are the year-end masters.

World Padel Tour

World Padel Tour ranking

The WPT ranking consists of the top world padel tour players. Since the pairings change during a season, doubles partners on the World Padel Tour ranking list don’t usually have the same points.

Players earn ranking points through their performance at tournaments on the WPT. Rankings are updated each week.

How much does a padel player earn?

Are you curious about the World Padel Tour Prize Money 2021?  One of the most frequently asked questions among padel fans is how much money a professional player can earn competing on the professional circuit.

In terms of prizes, the financial retributions differ depending on the type of competition included in the official calendar, i.e., Master, Open, and Challenger.

A player can earn anything from 131€ in a round of 16 Challenger to 10.584€ for winning a Master.

However, you should note that the above figures only take into account the prizes derived from participation in the circuit, without considering what the players get from the sponsors and the expenses involved in having a team of professionals around (coaches, psychologists, nutritionists, etc.).

International wildcards

To compete in a professional and high-level Padel tournament, players must meet specific requirements. To be eligible for a spot in an official event, you must appear in the rankings. There is also an alternative for those who do not meet the qualifying requirements. Padel players may qualify for WPT padel events through a system called “Wildcard.”

A variety of padel tournaments take place outside of the World Padel Tour competitions throughout the year. Wildcards get awarded at certain WPT events from these tournaments. Additionally, independent padel federations grant Wildcards to their best players.

As a result, players from other parts of the world seeking their first official points and participating in the top padel circuit now have more options.

The WPT guide – here's everything you need to know

The 2021 World Padel Tour season is here.

The WPT site is a bit difficult to navigate, so here's a simplified guide to help you understand how the world's best padel tour works.

The Tournament

The men's side , in most cases, except for the final masters, the wpt men's events are played through three different rounds: pre-qualifying, qualifying, and the main tournament. which round you enter depends on your ranking and how many players are entered in the tournament.  , pre previa (pre-qualifying).

If you are among the lowest-ranked of all the registered teams, you will already play in the first round of Pre Previa. A total of three rounds will be played of Pre Previa, where depending on your ranking, you can enter the first or second round.

Previa (Qualifying)

If you've made it past round three of Pre Previa, you'll have to wait for round two, Previa, which contains the final qualifying matches before the main tournament can begin. Depending on your ranking, you can also enter the second round. The Previa usually kicks off on Monday, after Sunday's Pre Previa.

Cuadro (Main round)

This is where the WPT tournaments are held. The "Main Round" begins with the Round of 16, but as in Pre Previa and Previa, the highest-ranked pairs get to skip the first round and go straight into the Round of 8. The main tournament starts on Wednesday.

The women side

The women's side of the WPT tends to differ slightly from the men's side because there are fewer women's teams than men's teams competing.

As on the men's side, some teams enter the second or first round of the Pre Previa depending on their ranking. The difference is that on the women's side, there are usually only two rounds you have to get past instead of three as on the men's side. Pre Previan usually kicks off on Monday on the women's side.

Like in Pre Previan, there are two rounds to get past on the women's side. On the men's side, it's usually three. Previan usually kicks off on Tuesday on the women's side.

There is no difference between the men and women at the WPT when it comes to the main tournament. The ladies, like the men, start the main round by playing the round of 16. And just like on the men's side, the top-ranked pairs enter the tournament in the round of eight.

This is basically what the tournament tree at the WPT looks like. So which rounds players enter depends on ranking and how many players are entered. There are usually 96 men's teams in Open classes, and 56 women's teams entered. In Masters tournaments, there are usually 100 men's teams entered, and 60 women's teams entered. In the Master's finals - which are played in December each year - only the top eight pairs on the men's and women's sides play.

So if you win all your matches and play from the first round, you could have as many as eleven matches in seven days.

Tournament categories

There are four different categories of tournaments on the World Padel Tour. They all have a different status - here ordered from highest to lowest status:

The Masters final

In the masters final, only the top eight ranked pairs on the men's and women's side will play. it is usually played as the last tournament of the year. last year, fernando belasteguin and agustin tapia won the men's event, while gemma triay and lucia sainz won the women's category. although the ranking points the winners receive (1300) are not the most, it is the most prestigious tournament.  .

60 women's pairs and 100 men's pairs can register. These are the most prestigious tournaments (four including the Masters Final) on the tour, alongside the Masters Final. If you win a Masters's, you will receive 1700 points.

The most common tournament format at the WPT. Usually, 96 men's pairs entered, and 56 women's pairs entered. If you win an Open, you get 1000 points.

The lowest-ranked tournament at the WPT is the easiest to get into and perfect if you want to earn points to get into the bigger tournaments. If you win a challenger, you get 120 points.

Points in World Padel Tour

• Winner: 1300 points

• Second place: 780 points

• Loss semi-final: 470 points

• Loss in the quarter-finals: 235 points

• Winner: 1700 points

• Second place: 1020 points

• Loss semi-final: 610 points

• Loss quarter-final: 310 points

• Loss round of 16: 150 points

• Loss round of 32: 70 points

• Winner: 1000 points

• Second place: 600 points

• Loss semi-final: 360 points

• Loss in quarter-final: 180 points

• Loss round of 16: 90 points

• Loss round of 32: 40 points

• Winner: 120 points

• Second place: 75 points

• Semi-final loss: 50 points

• Loss in the quarter-finals: 35 points

• Loss round of 16: 25 points

• Loss round of 32: 12 points

Your ranking on the World Padel Tour is based on the points you score in any of the above tournament categories.

The ranking is updated weekly, and if a player has been playing with their partner for over a year, they will have the same ranking points. The ranking points you have are based on the last year's competitions, which means that when you get your new points after a competition, the points you took exactly one year ago will also disappear.

To give young players further down the rankings a better chance of climbing, the WPT also has a specific bonus system. If you, as an unseeded player, defeat a seeded player in a tournament, you will receive bonus points in addition to the points you receive for reaching a certain round.

An unseeded pair that beats a seeded pair in the main round gets 40 points in the Masters, 25 in the Opens, and seven in a challenger.

If you also manage to make it all the way from the Previa to the main tournament, you will also get bonus points.

History

The World Padel Tour, the international organ for professional padel, was founded in 2012. After receiving the green light from the International Padel Federation, FIP, they could start up in 2013.

Before the WPT was founded, the professional tour was called the Padel Pro Tour (PPT). A tour was active between 2005 and 2012 before the WPT took over.

Initially, the WPT was only played in Spain, but for a few years now, the tour has expanded outside the country, for example, to Sweden and Båstad.

This year the WPT will be played in Spain, Mexico, Sweden, Argentina, Italy, and Portugal.

What Is The World Padel Tour?

padel world tour wiki

Padel, I discovered, was one of the most “federated” sports I had encountered in the world. I was curious to find out how World Padel Tour managed to find and establish itself as a major player in this highly regulated sport fraught with “federated” red tape on an international platform.

What is the World Padel Tour? The World Padel Tour (WPT) is the international circuit for professional padel tournaments for both women and men. The World Padel Tour covers all the professional events for the International Padel Federation, except for the Padel World Championships and Continental Championships.

The World Padel Tour (WPT) was founded in 2012. It was a relatively easy entry into what was then an already established, but disjointed circuit of international tournaments hosted by many the Padel Federations as well as the Padel Pro Tour (PPT). The latter being the first international circuit for professional Padel tournaments.

However, World Padel Tour’s arrival on the world tour circuit was not without some controversy. Join me in looking at all of this in greater detail.

A Unified Umbrella for Professional Padel

By the time Word Padel Tour (WPT) made an official entry on the world circuit in 2012, Padel was booming.  Many padel federations had already been established in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, United States, Canada, and Brazil.

The sport was fast expanding to other countries with the first European federations formed in the ’90s in Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, and Austria.

After having been given the green light by the International Padel Federation, the first World Padel Tour (WPT) started in 2013, which would go on to become the main tour for professional Padel Tournaments. Since then, World Padel Tour has grown to a total of 560 men and 317 women professional players worldwide.

Today, the WPT is the organizing body and brand for top tier professional tournaments around the world. The WPT also houses the official ranking list of professional padel players.

The Padel Pro Tour (PPT) Controversy

In 2012, The World Padel Tour (WPT) had put into place all the necessary requirements to enter the international circuit, including the signing of the 100 best Padel players in the world. But not everybody welcomed this move.

The Padel Pro Tour (PPT), at the time, was ruling the roost. The PPT, founded in 2005, was the dominant player in the field, the first professional paddle tour circuit.

By the time The World Padel Tour (WPT) registered with the International Padel Federation in 2012, the Padel Pro Tour had made its mark on the international circuit and had become the firm favorite with professional players. Soon, the best players in the world joined and played The Padel Pro Tour tournaments in Spain and Argentina.

When the World Padel Tour arrived on the scene it was regarded as “stepping on their turf” kind of thing by the Padel Pro Tour organization, especially when many top players started signing with the World Padel Tour. Padel Pro Tour then, as a preemptive measure, filed a lawsuit to try and stop the first WPT tournament from happening as scheduled in April 2013.

In their affidavit, Padel Pro Tour asked the Court to suspend the WPT. On April 15, 2013, the Madrid Lower Court denied the application because Padel Pro Tour failed to supply evidence to back up their claim. The Lower Court ruling spelled the end of the Padel Pro Tour and at the same time signaled the birth of World Padel Tour WPT).

One of the key innovations that the World Padel Tour brought has been the free worldwide live streaming of WPT tournaments as a way to promote the sport to a global audience. Currently, the live stream is only available with Spanish commentary, but that will change as the padel becomes more popular in English speaking countries.

International Padel Federation (IPF) Approved

From personal experience, one of the first things I learned about doing business in Spain, was that there are many rules. Rules to be adhered to as stipulated by the many levels of governance and ruling bodies.

It’s no different when it comes to sporting events. Everything needs to be “federated.” On national as well regional level. You want to put on an “ Espectacular Publico ” (public event), permissions need to be requested and obtained and don’t you dare try to be smartass and do it your way. You’re bound to hit a brick wall. Seems like the WPT managed to get it right.

The International Padel Federation (IPF), the governing body of Padel, recognizes The World Padel Tour (WPT) as the official professional circuit worldwide. This gives the WPT the “federated” standing, not only for the tournaments but also as the body responsible for the international ranking list.

The Difference between WPT and Padel World Championships (PWC)

Unlike the World Padel Tour that is a year-round series of events, Padel World Championship is a single international padel competition held every three years since 1992. The first competition was held in Spain. The event is organized by the International Padel Federation and has both male and female competitions .

The World Padel Tour Circuit

Historically, the World Padel Tour has been played in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. However, of late, many more countries outside of Spain and South America have joined in the fray.

In recent years, France, Sweden, England, Belgium as well as Dubai have hosted tournaments on the circuit. In 2017 the World Padel Tour visited Miami, Florida for the first touch on US soil. Hopefully, the USA will soon become a permanent fixture on the World Padel Tour.

The World Padel Tour Tournaments

The World Padel Tournament has four tiers of tournaments.

  • Master Final

Starting at the Challenger, each subsequent tier has higher ranking points and prize money. I.e. the Challenger Tournaments has a lower entry-level. It’s a good way for lower-ranked players to earn points as a way of moving up the ranks. I cover this in more detail in my article on how World Padel Tour rankings are calculated. Click here to read that article .

The WPT Rankings

The WPT ranking is based on the performance of double’s pairings in tournaments and gets updated weekly every Tuesday.

The pairings of the players may change during a season for a number of possible reasons. The most common of these is if one of the players gets a serious season-ending injury. That is why more often than not doubles partners on the World Padel Tour ranking list seldom have the same ranking. For more information, read my article about how the WPT rankings are calculated .

Anti-Doping

World Padel Tour (WPT) is registered with the World Anti-doping Association (WADA). This is part of the checks and balances needed for Padel to become an official Olympic sport. To find out more, here is my article about how padel got classified as a sport and what is needed to become an Olympic sport .

I've been playing padel since 2015, although I first saw a padel court when I visited Spain in 2008. Living inland from the Costa Del Sol means playing padel all year round.

One thought on “ What Is The World Padel Tour? ”

I really enjoy your web site and I have shared it with our players here in Austin Texas. Lake Travis Padel was established last July 2020 and we are excited to be a part of the padel movement here in the USA. I am Canadian and will be investing in padel in Canada in the next couple of years as well.

If there is anything that I can do to help contribute to this amazing sport please know that I am available. I would love to figure out how I can become a part of the “marketing” of padel merchandising line as I would love to bring in WPT etc… to the USA and Canada. I currently purchase BullPadel gear direct in small quantities which is not effective. Any thoughts in helping me build the padel brand in Texas / USA would be amazing. Thanks. Evolution of Padel Tennis: From Origins to Global Phenomenon

Padel tennis has quickly become one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, enthralling players and viewers with its unique blend of tennis and squash. With its smaller court size and exciting gameplay, padel tennis has garnered immense popularity in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Let’s dive into the captivating evolution of padel tennis, exploring its origins, growth, impact, and prospects.

From its humble beginnings to becoming a global phenomenon, padel tennis has redefined the sporting landscape.

Table of Contents

Origins of padel tennis.

Spain , the epicenter of padel tennis, stands as the dominant force in the sport, boasting over 20,000 padel courts and an estimated 4 million active players. Padel tennis initially flourished within tennis  clubs in Spain  in the early 90s. However, the landscape has shifted in recent years, with just 25% of total padel courts now located at tennis venues.

Enthusiastic entrepreneurs have established dedicated padel venues as small businesses, leading to a saturated market and intense competition among clubs. This competition has resulted in a pricing war, driving down court booking prices while increasing warehouse monthly rentals.

As the Padel industry matures and expands globally, more established venues with sustainable business models tend to thrive. Similarly, reputable brands with more excellent infrastructure, stability, and experience have risen to prominence amidst the crowded marketplace.

Spain and Portugal now encourage a minimum of 6 padel courts for sustainable projects to achieve financial returns.

Sweden has experienced rapid growth in padel tennis, with only 10% of total padel courts located in tennis venues. Swedish entrepreneurs and enthusiasts have played a crucial role, investing in courts, clubs, and even franchise business models, some of which have received celebrity endorsements.

Notably, Sweden’s capital’s most recent padel facility opened with an impressive 20 indoor courts. The  Swedish Padel Federation  now faces the challenge of implementing governance and structure to match the overwhelming growth experienced in a short period.

In France and Italy, tennis federations have governed padel tennis, with 75% of the total padel courts located at registered tennis venues. Over the past five years, both countries have witnessed substantial growth, with court numbers increasing from less than 100 to over 800.

Tennis venues proactively adding padel courts have created a sustainable model for the future. 21 European tennis federations have incorporated padel governance into their bylaws, actively supporting its growth.

Padel tennis has also made its mark in Great Britain, although the growth has been slower than in other European countries. However, the recent incorporation of Padel into the  Lawn Tennis Association (LTA)  suggests organic growth following similar trends in other European nations.

The LTA has facilitated this growth through a Quick-Access Loan Scheme, providing interest-free finance of up to £250k for Padel projects. The primary objective for the LTA is to increase infrastructure and encourage existing tennis venues to embrace the innovative scope of padel, building a sustainable platform for the sport’s growth and awareness.

Origins of Padel Tennis

When Did Padel Become an International Sport

Padel’s journey to international recognition can be attributed to Spanish entrepreneur  Alfonso de Hohenlohe . During a visit to Mexico in 1974, Hohenlohe discovered and fell in love with the game. Upon returning to Spain’s Costa del Sol, he built the country’s  first two padel courts at the Marbella Club .

Introducing these courts sparked  popularity  among club members, including renowned tennis player Manolo Santana, who won four Grand Slam titles.  Tournaments  soon sprouted along the Costa del Sol as more clubs erected their padel courts.

In 1975, Argentine millionaire Julio Menditenguia encountered Padel in Marbella and decided to introduce the sport to his home country. Argentina embraced Padel with open arms, leading to its tremendous popularity.

Today, Argentina boasts over two million officially licensed Padel players and over 10,000  Padel courts .

Having embraced padel as a beloved sport, Spain continues to be a hotbed for the game. The country now features over 20,000 padel courts and an estimated six million active players.

Football may hold the top spot in Spanish sports, but Padel has secured its place as the second-most-popular sport in the country.

Padel Become an International Sport

Professionalization of Padel Tennis

Establishing the International Paddle Federation in 1991 marked a pivotal moment in Padel tennis’ professional journey. The first world championships were held in Madrid and Seville in 1992, laying the foundation for global recognition.

A significant step came in 1993 when the Sports Council of Spain acknowledged paddle as a sport and changed its spelling to padel for pronunciation purposes in the Spanish language.

In 2005, the Padel Pro Tour, the first professional world tour, was created, and in 2013, it evolved into the  World Padel Tour . This circuit continues to thrive, hosting events worldwide and showcasing the skills of professional players from around the globe.

Professionalization of Padel Tennis

The Advent of Professional Tournaments and Associations

In the 80s and 90s, Alfonso’s original courts hosted the  first-ever “Pro-Am” tournaments , a platform for professional players to partner with notable personalities, such as politicians, artists, and sportsmen.

In 1991, representatives from the Spanish Padel Association, Argentinian Padel Association, and Uruguayan Padel Association met in Madrid, creating the International Padel Federation (FIP).

The following year, in 1992, Madrid was the host city for the inaugural World Padel Championships, with only four countries competing—Spain, Argentina, the UK, and France. The game’s allure continued to increase, and by 2000, Spain alone boasted over 500 padel clubs.

In the United States, the US Padel Association was founded in 1993, and the American Padel Association followed two years later, constructing courts at a private club in  Houston .

Padel tennis found its way to Great Britain when the British Paddle Association was formed in 1992 by a group of passionate British ex-pats seeking to compete in the World Paddle Championships.

Since then, the sport has experienced steady growth across the nation. In 2019, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) integrated British Padel into its day-to-day operations, recognizing organic growth and development potential.

As of November 2020, there were approximately 6,000 active Padel players across the UK, with 82 Padel courts at 45 clubs. However, these numbers are set to increase significantly in the coming years.

The LTA, now confirmed as the national governing body for Padel, aims to establish 400 Padel courts across the United Kingdom by 2023 as part of its Padel Development Plan.

The World Padel Tour: Past, Present & Future

World Padel Tour & PADEL1969

The World Padel Tour (WPT) is an international padel circuit and tournament that takes place every year. As the biggest padel tournament in the world, it’s a given that padel fans want to know more.

In this article, we will cover the tour’s evolution, its rounds, locations, and chronology over the years. We list past winners and predict what we think the future looks like for this tour.

In other words, we will take you through the entire timeline — past, present, and future — of the WPT. Let’s get started!

About the World Padel Tour

The World Padel Tour organization was initially formed in 2012, after which it started hosting professional tournaments from the year 2013 onwards. It is now responsible for most kinds of tournaments excluding the Padel World Championships and Continental Championships. It has its headquarters in Spain.

Before this circuit was established, the Padel Pro Tour (PPT) was in place from 2005 to 2012, hosting international professional players and their tournaments. However, the entity behind the event was quite disorganized, which led to the creation of the WPT.

The WPT is officially recognized by the International Padel Federation (IPF). Since 2013, the WPT has popularized padel as a sport across several countries of the world, hosting their tournaments in multiple countries throughout the years.

The WPT Tournaments

Every year, the WPT hosts several tournaments and competitions across different countries and ability levels. Initially, these competitions were only held in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, but recently, other countries like the UAE, Sweden, Great Britain, and the US have hosted tournaments as well.

Tournaments are divided into three categories, Challenger, Open, and Master. Each category awards a certain amount of points for a win, which then increases the player’s position in WPT rankings.

The Challenger category of the WPT is at the bottom of the tournament hierarchy. It can be a good way for the participating teams to earn more points and develop their skills in order to participate in the subsequent tiers of the tour.

As the “easiest” category, challenger tournaments have lower standards when it comes to participation, along with a smaller prize.

The Open round is quite popular in terms of the tournaments that the WPT hosts. Here, 96 teams (or pairs) can enter the competition in the men’s category and 56 teams for the women’s category. The Open round allows the winners to score up to 1,000 points depending on the level that they are playing at.

Apart from the points or rankings, the Open tournaments also extend the prizes awarded to the winners.

The Master round is the next tier in the hierarchy. These competitions increase the points received per win, (1,700) as well as the prizes awarded to the winners. In Master level tournaments, 100 teams for the men’s category and 60 teams for the women’s category can enter.

Master Final

The Master Final is the biggest tournament of the season. Here, the top rankers of the Master category go head to head to determine the final winners of the tournament season. Generally, eight teams are allowed to compete in this round for both men and women.

Qualifying for a WPT Tournament

Not just anyone can compete in a WPT tournament. In order to qualify for any of the aforementioned categories, players will have to go through several qualifier rounds, these include:

  • Pre-qualifying rounds where several teams compete at three different levels and move on to the next level based on their rankings.
  • Qualifying rounds where winning teams from the previous rounds compete with each other to enter the main tournament, where the rankings determine the final teams.
  • The main tournament where the Challenger, Open, Master and Master Final categories are carried out to determine a winner.

Chronology of the Competition

To give you a better idea of what the competition has looked like over the years and how it has evolved, we will now take you through the past WPT tournaments . This will include where these competitions were held and the winners that emerged.

This was the first competition of the WPT. Its rounds were held in Spain, Argentina, and Portugal. The overall winners of this tournament were Fernando Belasteguin and Juan Martin Diaz from Argentina in the men’s category.

For the women’s category, the winners were Elisabeth Amatriain and Patricia Llaguno from Spain. In both cases, the finals were held in Madrid.

The rounds of the World Padel Tour of 2014 were held across Spain, Argentina, and Portugal, along with the addition of Dubai.

The men’s category saw Maxi Sanchez and Carlos Gutierrez from Argentina as the winners this year. The Spanish twins Mapi and Majo Sanchez Alayeto topped the women’s category.

The third edition of the WPT was held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, UAE, and Monaco, and included players from several different nationalities, including Brazil, Spain, and Argentina, pointing to the increasing popularity of the sport across the world.

By the end of this tour, Argentinian Maxi Sanchez once again claimed the top spot, this time while playing next to Juan Martin Diaz from Spain. The women’s tournament saw Spaniards Marta Marrero and Alejandra Salazar as the new female champions.

Now well established, the WPT of 2016 was once again held in the countries of Spain, Argentina, and Monaco. As had happened in previous years Spanish, Argentinian and Brazilian players dominated the competition.

The Master Final was held in Madrid in Spain and saw Francisco Navarro from Spain and Carlos Gutierrez from Argentina as the winners in the men’s category while Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero from Spain defended their champion status in the women’s category.

By 2017, padel had spread far and wide, which is why for the 2017 WPT, competitions were held in more countries than ever before. WPT tournaments were held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Andorra, UK, USA, France, Sweden, and Belgium, and some of the year’s biggest competitions took place in Miami and Granada.

Although locations and participants were more diverse this year, the newcomers couldn’t hold their own against countries like Argentina, Spain, and Brazil, which once again lead the competition.

Both the men’s and women’s tournaments saw previous winners make a comeback for the Master Final. 2013 winner Fernando Belasteguin crowned himself champion alongside Brazilian Pablo Lima, while the Spanish Sanchez Alayeto twins that won the 2014 WPT regained the women’s title.

Male Padel Player

In 2018, the tournament was held in the countries of Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Sweden, and Andorra, across major cities like Alicante, Buenos Aires, Valladolid and Granada.

By the end of this tour, the men’s category saw Fernando Belasteguin from Argentina and Pablo Lima from Brazil remain as reigning champions, whereas the women’s category saw Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero from Spain as the winners.

In 2019, the tournament was held during its usual season from March 2019 to December 2019. It was held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, France, UK, Sweden, and Belgium with several other participating countries.

This time, the Master Final was held in Barcelona. In the men’s category, the winners were Alejandro Galan from Spain and Pablo Lima from Brazil. In the women’s category, the winners were Alejandra Salazar and Ariana Sanchez.

The World Padel Tour of 2020 started in February but had to halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic . It restarted in June of the same year and was held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, and Belgium.

In the men’s category, Fernando Belasteguin and Agustin Tapia from Argentina emerged as winners while Gemma Triay and Lucia Sainz from Spain were the winners in the women’s category.

The WPT of 2021 was the ninth edition of this tournament. It was held in Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Sweden, Italy, and Mexico since April. The Master Finals were held in Madrid, Spain, in December. In the men’s category, the winners were Ale Galan and Juan Lebron. They won against Sanyo Gutiérrez and Agustín Tapia. This win was absolutely amazing and the performance was in style for the win of the biggest title of the season.

In the women’s category, the winners were Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez. They made a record as they became the youngest pair to become Masters as they won the masters final in Madrid in 2021.

In 2022 WPT has got new pressure from Premier Padel tournaments and they have been under pressure also from Professional Padel Player Association regarding prize money. Still, it has been a very interesting year with multiple new locations for WPT competitions and even new exhibitions like in Acapulco, Mexico which are the roots of the Padel. The season started with US-style in Miami Padel Open and it raised great attention to Padel in the United States. This year the master final is in Barcelona from the 15th to the 18th of December.

If you want to stay up to date with the latest news on Padel, follow us on Instagram , Facebook or TikTok , we post regular updates on important competitions, matches, and padel news in general!

The Future of the Tour

With the growth and increasing popularity of padel , we predict that the World Padel Tour will only continue to get better. As the sport spreads across the globe, new players will come on the scene, more athletes will choose to compete professionally, and the competition will get even more exciting. As the WPT draws larger crowds and the attention of mainstream media, its likely that more countries will be putting up their hand to host rounds of the tournament. We’ll see new destinations, in more diverse locations, added to the circuit.

Catch All the Action of the WPT

Although the different tournaments and competitions might seem a little confusing at first, it’s not too hard to get the hang of how the WPT works. Athletes compete at several tournaments throughout the year, increasing their rankings with each win.

Those in the Master category who make it to the top of the rankings get to participate in the Master Finals, which determines the WPT winners for the year.

If you’ve never watched professional padel before, we highly encourage you to tune in for a WPT competition. Seeing top players at work is sure to blow your mind. In fact, if you’ve joined a padel club , you might be able to watch it surrounded by other padel lovers like yourself!

Premier Padel and World Padel Tour agree to unify tours in historic move

padel world tour wiki

In a massive breakthrough for the professional game, Premier Padel and the World Padel Tour are to be unified as a single global professional tour, called Premier Padel, from 2024.

The move follows the acquisition of World Padel Tour (WPT) by Premier Padel owners Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) after months of negotiations between QSI, the International Padel Federation (FIP) and the Professional Padel Association (the founder of Premier Padel) with Damm, the owner of Setpoint Events which organises the World Padel Tour (WPT).

The agreement follows over a year and a half of public fallout between the rival tours since QSI (owners of Paris St Germain FC) first partnered with FIP to create Premier Padel.

The agreement will see QSI acquire the business assets of WPT and signifies the resolution of outstanding disputes between the parties, including those affecting QSI, FIP and the professional padel players who have competed in both tours.

Throughout the remainder of the 2023 calendar year, the separate WPT and Premier Padel tours will be played as planned, while the unification of the competitions for the next calendar year – forming a single Premier Padel global tour under the governance of FIP starting in 2024 – is worked on.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, World Padel Tour, established in 2013, has served as the pre-eminent tour in the sport. It has featured over 26 men’s and women’s tournaments across 14 countries, boasting 17 global sponsors and television broadcasting rights spanning more than 150 countries.

Premier Padel – the official professional padel tour governed by FIP and backed by the PPA and the International Padel Players Association (IPPA) – was launched by QSI as a rival circuit in 2022.

padel world tour wiki

Over 500 players from around the world competed in Premier Padel tournaments in its first year, played in some of the most iconic venues in sports history, including at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris.

Premier Padel has secured multi-year broadcast agreements that cover 180+ countries reaching over 150 million households, while the inaugural 2022 Premier Padel season attracted 22.7 million views on YouTube. Over 110 leading professional female players joined Premier Padel in March this year.

Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman of Qatar Sports Investments and Premier Padel, said: “This is an historic moment for the sport of padel, ultimately seeing the two leading professional padel tours unified as one single global Premier Padel tour under the governance of the International Padel Federation – starting next year.

“As the fastest-growing sport globally, QSI is proud to be at the heart of driving the development of padel professionally all around the world, always placing the players at the centre of our mission to grow the sport everywhere. We are very excited for this next chapter.”

Demetrio Carceller Arce, Damm’s Executive Chairman, said: “The World Padel Tour is now beginning a new stage led by QSI, who will contribute to speeding up the tour’s international growth.”

Carceller Arce added: “Damm is proud to have contributed to the development of professional padel, making the World Padel Tour a global benchmark, with over four million followers. This has helped padel become the world’s fastest growing sport in recent years, with very positive progress for the entire padel industry.”

Luigi Carraro, President of the International Padel Federation, said: “As the governing body of padel worldwide, we are delighted to see the coming together of two great tours into one fantastic global circuit.

“The International Padel Federation thanks Damm for greatly contributing to the sport of padel through the World Padel Tour since its inception in 2013. We now look forward to the next fantastic phase of development and growth of professional padel under Premier Padel, which will benefit the whole padel community, including the national federations and – most importantly – the players and next generation.”
