  • Your first Laybuy payment due upfront will be $400 ($1,400- $1,000) (order total less your Laybuy available limit)
  • Your weekly repayments will then be $200 each (your Laybuy available limit divided by 5 remaining payments)

How do I refund a flight purchased with Laybuy?

If you ever need to cancel your Mix & Match Travel booking, our first step is to check the booking rules to see if a refund is possible. Now, if your booking turns out to be non-refundable, no worries! You can still cancel your flight, but just remember, you'll still need to keep up with your payments on your Laybuy account.

But here's the silver lining – if your booking qualifies for a refund, we'll get in touch with the airline. Once we've secured that refund, we'll process it right back into your account, minus any Airline and Mix & Match Travel cancellation fees. Just a friendly heads-up though, while we're busy making sure that the refund lands safely in your Laybuy account, keep those payments flowing as usual.

What is Buy Now Pay Later?

Buy now pay later is a purchasing scheme that allows consumers to obtain goods or services, either in-store or through online shopping, with flexible payment options — so they don’t have to pay the full price upfront. The consumer is able to take the item home on the day by making a small deposit. The remainder of the price is then paid off in scheduled interest-free payments over a fixed time period.

How much does Buy Now Pay Later cost?

It depends on the provider as to the fees and charges associated with Buy Now Pay Later. Many New Zealand providers offer interest-free, no-fee services based on the condition that the scheduled payments are made on time. If the buyer fails to pay on time, fees will be charged for the missed payments. While BNPL lenders do not charge interest, the late fees can range from $3 all the way up to $68 — so if you want to avoid fees, it’s important to make the interest-free instalments by the due date, because the late fees can quickly add up.

A monthly administration fee may apply with some lenders if an unpaid portion is carried into the next month.

It’s important to note that you could end up paying interest on your purchases indirectly if you have linked your credit card to your BNPL account. Ensure you pay your credit card balance in full to avoid interest charges sneaking up on your BNPL purchases.

How do I use Buy Now Pay Later?

At the checkout stage of a purchase, if a Buy Now Pay Later option is available, this will be visually or verbally made known to the purchaser. If you are unsure whether the retailer has the Buy Now Pay Later option, you can simply ask the individual retailer.

Signing up for BNPL is quick and easy. There is no hard credit check or extensive application process; you simply need to provide your contact details and identification. Once you’ve linked your credit or debit card, you’re ready to start shopping!

You don’t need to have good credit to use BNPL, so don’t stress if your report with the credit bureaus is less than perfect!

Various payment options

When viewing your BNPL dashboard via the app, you’ll be able to check how much you are able to borrow for your payment plans. Before making a purchase, you may undergo a soft credit check. Once this is out of the way, you may find various payment options available to you. The payment options will likely include interest-free instalments (either weekly or fortnightly), or monthly finance repayments — which come with interest charges like personal loans and short term loans.

How do Buy Now Pay Later repayments work?

The purchase price is spread across between four to ten, equal instalments. You pay the first instalment at the time of purchase, and then you have up to 9 weeks (depending on the BNPL lender) to make each instalment. Depending on the service provider, your repayments are due weekly or fortnightly. Zero interest is charged on the repayments, and often, you won’t come across a fee unless you miss a payment. The merchant covers the fees, so the purchaser doesn’t have to.

Online travel agency offers fly now, pay later contracts

CheapAir says it's offering plane ticket payment plans in light of findings that suggest 67 per cent of American 18- to 29-year-olds don't have a credit card. Photo / 123RF

Millennials are changing the travel industry.

The frugal and tech-savvy generation that so many people bemoan has prompted big hotel companies to launch affordable, hostel-like lodgings and install voice-activated assistance in rooms, according to Smarter Travel.

It's backed a booming peer-to-peer industry. It's demanded that low-cost accommodations and budget airlines no longer be a seedy alternative.

And now, one online travel agency, based in the United States, is catering to people who don't have credit cards — most of whom happen to be millennials.

CheapAir.com allows customers to make monthly payments on plane tickets instead of paying upfront, which means travellers can now book and take an expensive flight, but pay for it later.

This "Travel Now, Pay Later" option will make pricey, last-minute flights a lot easier to book, and could also open doors for people who simply can't afford flights.

CheapAir's payment plans are backed by Affirm, a loan serviced that will collect monthly payments at 10 to 30 per cent interest, depending on a "soft" credit eligibility check.

Purchasers spending more than $US100 on fares will be able to choose between three-, six-, or 12-month financing plans.

CheapAir says it's offering payment plans in light of BankRate.com findings that suggest 67 per cent of American 18- to 29-year-olds don't have a credit card.

The study cites student loan debt as one reason younger people might not want to use credit, as well as financial problems that occurred during the Global Financial Crisis of 2007.

"Credit card issuers, in many respects, have not kept up with the times and there are an increasing number of alternatives now available," Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com said.

"We want to give everyone the freedom to travel, regardless of whether or not they choose to use credit cards."

Millennials (and others) without credit cards, rejoice.

Buy Now Pay Later in NZ: Best NZ BNPL Sites

Posted by Bruce Pitchers September 8, 2022

Back in the day, before apps and smartphones, there was still lay-by. You hit the shops, chose what you wanted to buy, and paid for it in instalments. The kicker back then was that you didn’t get your hands on the goods until you made your final payment. Roll on a couple of decades and thanks to Buy Now Pay Later schemes, we can all get our sticky mitts on a pair of new kicks or gadget instantly!

Since the closure of Humm, here in NZ we have a choice of five BNPL schemes. But what is Buy Now Pay Later? What are the differences between the different providers? And which stores accept the different schemes? Read on to discover the answer to these questions and more …

Buy Now Pay Later in NZ: The Best NZ BNPL Sites : In this article we cover:

What is BNPL?

How do i sign up to bnpl, bnpl and credit scores.

  • BNPL vs. credit cards

Buy Now Pay Later schemes allow you to pay off an item over several weeks, interest free. Many online retailers and bricks-and-mortar stores accept payment by BNPL schemes.

Most retailers offer just one BNPL payment option, so if you want to use BNPL at multiple stores, you’ll need to sign up to more than one BNPL account. But once you’ve signed up, making a purchase is as straightforward as buying something using a regular credit card.

When you make your first purchase, the BNPL will assess your credit rating and set a limit on your spending; this can change as you build a history with the BNPL provider. Regularly make your repayments and you could find your limit increasing.

You pay the first instalment of the total price when you buy your goods. The remaining instalments are then charged to your account regularly over the next couple of months. Payments range from weekly to fortnightly.

There is no fee for using BNPL schemes if you make your regular payments. And many schemes allow you to pay off your total amount owing early, should you be flush with cash. However, fail to pay your bill on time and you’ll be hit with a late payment fee.

At Afterpay, that’s $10 for the first default, and $7 more every seven days from then on, to a cap of 25% of the cost of your item. But many other providers don’t cap their fees, so fall behind and you could end up paying a lot more for your purchase than you intended.

Searching for the Cheapest Personal Loan?

If you’re looking for the cheapest personal loan, Canstar’s personal loan comparison tables can help. The table below displays the sponsored unsecured personal loan products available on Canstar’s database for a three-year loan of $10,000 in Auckland, with links to lenders’ websites. Use Canstar’s personal loan comparison selector to view a wider range of products on Canstar’s database. Canstar may earn a fee for referrals.

Signing up to a BNPL account is pretty quick and easy. You register online using a BNPL provider’s app or website. Unlike when you sign up for a personal loan or credit card, the process only takes a couple of minutes, as there are no lengthy credit checks involved ( see below ).

To sign up you’ll need to provide proof of ID and your contact details. You’ll also need to link your BNPL account to a valid credit card or debit card.

Of course, when making a purchase, you’ll need enough credit on your card, or cash in your bank account, to cover the first instalment. And then you must ensure you’ve enough money to cover further payments, or you’ll be hit with a penalty fee.

The display order does not reflect any ranking or rating by Canstar.

This information is not an endorsement by Canstar of BNPL schemes or any specific provider.

BNPL providers generally do not do a full credit check on you when you sign up or make a purchase. Because they’re not considered lenders in the traditional sense, they don’t have to adhere to the same responsible lending criteria as credit card and personal loan providers.

Rather than a thorough full, or hard, credit check that leaves a mark on your record, they can get away with a quick check that doesn’t leave a permanent hit on your credit report. This is why the application process is so quick and easy.

However, while they might not do full credit checks, their T&Cs give them the authority to do so. When you agree to a BNPL provider’s terms of service, you authorise the company to make any enquiries they consider necessary to assess your capability to make payments, which may include ordering a credit report.

More importantly, you also authorise them to pass on any information about your late payments, missed payments, defaults or penalty payments to credit reporting agencies. This means if you miss payments or have other negative activity, your credit score could take a hit.

  • Ability to extended due dates on some repayments

Unlike other BNPL services, Klarna doesn’t charged late fees on balances under $50. For sums $50 and above it charges a fee of $3 per missed instalment, to a total of $9.

Zip has over 11 million customers worldwide, and is available at over 3000 retailers, including The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, Bunnings Warehouse, The Market, Chemist Warehouse, Mighty Ape and Torpedo7.

  • Credit of up to $1500
  • $8 fee for missing a payment plus f urther $8 for every week the payment is outstanding

BNPL vs. credit cards: what’s the difference?

BNPL services allow you to pay off an item over several weeks, interest free. This means the price you find the item for will (generally) be the overall price you pay. Payments are usually split into four to ten instalments.

Credit cards let you spend by borrowing money from the card supplier, who then sends you a bill at the end of each month. Credit cards have a fixed limit, which is the maximum you can borrow. This depends on factors such as your credit score and income. With credit cards, all your purchases go into one pool. This means you can’t say to yourself you’ve paid a particular item off, unless you clear the entire bill. In the case of BNPL, you can track the repayments on individual items.

Considering a credit card?

If you are considering a credit card, make sure you check the credit cards available in the market, to see which one suits your spending profile. If I could give no stars I would

If I could give no stars I would. In theory this company provides a good service. I booked a flight and hotel and never received any flight information or confirmation. Just a receipt. Had to call day before flight to finally get flight info and finish booking. The hotel same thing but only thing was, I got a receipt but they never booked the hotel. So when I got to the hotel no booking. I called, the customer service girl was nice enough and tried to help, said she would call back. I received no call, just an email that they issued a refund. What a joke, now in another country, no hotel that was paid for. A refund that will take 10 days to process. No call, no nothing. I called back and actually got the sane girl which leads me to believe they don't have a lot of people working for them. I said "no call , just an email". She said she was very busy. So no hotel in another country, no call from anyone. An absolute joke. If you want piece of mind, go somewhere else. The lack of help and respect to leave someone potentially stranded. Now that wasn't the case,I booked a hotel, but it could have been for someone else. Don't use them not worth the stress.

Date of experience : April 21, 2024

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes.

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

  • Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.
  • Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.
  • Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

  • Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.
  • Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
  • Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.
  • Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  • DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.
  • In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.
  • DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

The final rule on refunds can be found at https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/latest-news and at regulations.gov , docket number DOT-OST-2022-0089. There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.

Information about airline passenger rights, as well as DOT’s rules, guidance and orders, can be found at   https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer .

Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the new rules Wednesday.

Good news for airline travelers: the Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced it is rolling out new rules that will require airlines to automatically give cash refunds to passengers for canceled and significantly delayed flights.

"This is a big day for America's flying public," said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at a Wednesday morning news conference. Buttigieg said the new rules -- which require prompt refunds -- are the biggest expansion of passenger rights in the department's history.

Airlines can no longer decide how long a delay must be before a refund is issued. Under the new DOT rules, the delays covered would be more than three hours for domestic flights and more than six hours for international flights, the agency said.

This includes tickets purchased directly from airlines, travel agents and third-party sites such as Expedia and Travelocity.

The DOT rules lay out that passengers will be "entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered."

DOT will also require airlines to give cash refunds if your bags are lost and not delivered within 12 hours.

The refunds must be issued within seven days, according to the new DOT rules, and must be in cash unless the passenger chooses another form of compensation. Airlines can no longer issue refunds in forms of vouchers or credits when consumers are entitled to receive cash.

Airlines will have six months to comply with the new rules.

"Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them -- without headaches or haggling," Buttigieg said in a statement.

The DOT said it is also working on rules related to family seating fees, enhancing rights for wheelchair-traveling passengers for safe and dignified travel and mandating compensation and amenities if flights are delayed or canceled by airlines.

Buttigieg said the DOT is also protecting airline passengers from being surprised by hidden fees -- a move he estimates will have Americans billions of dollars every year.

The DOT rules include that passengers will receive refunds for extra services paid for and not provided, such as Wi-Fi, seat selection or inflight entertainment.

The rules come after the agency handed Southwest Airlines a record $140 million fine for its operational meltdown during the 2022 holiday travel season.

MORE: New whistleblower claims put Boeing's quality control under more scrutiny

Buttigieg said Southwest's fine sets a "new standard" for airlines and passenger rights.

"To be clear, we want the airline sector to thrive. It is why we put so much into helping them survive the pandemic and honestly it's why we're being so rigorous on passenger protection," he said.

Buttigieg reiterated that refund requirements are already the standard for airlines, but the new DOT rules hold the airlines to account and makes sure passengers get the "refunds that are owed to them."

"Airlines are not enthusiastic about us holding them to a higher standard," Buttigieg said, adding that he "knows they will be able to adapt to this."

Airlines for America, the trade association for the country's leading passenger and cargo airlines, told ABC News in a statement that its members "offer a range of options -- including fully refundable fares." Is said consumers are "given the choice of refundable ticket options with terms and conditions that best fit their needs at first search results."

The group said the 11 largest U.S. airlines issued $43 billion in customer refunds from 2020 through 2023 nearly $11 billion in refunds just last year.
