PUMA Golf's new PHANTOMCAT NITRO an innovation to spike game

PUMA Golf's new PHANTOMCAT NITRO an innovation to spike game

Shoes bring flexibility, explosiveness to course with new Flexspikes

Change Text Size

This season on the PGA TOUR, look for PUMA Golf athletes Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland, Justin Suh and J.J. Spaun to be rocking some new footwear.

That's because PUMA has introduced the new PHANTOMCAT NITRO shoe. A culmination of several years of development and testing among these athletes, the NITRO provides golfers with greater explosiveness and power, along with increased comfort, flexibility and rebound, on the golf course.

The PHANTOMCAT NITRO is our most advanced shoe to date,” said Senior PLM Footwear of PUMA Golf Andrew Lawson. "The feedback we’ve received from our TOUR athletes has been fantastic and I can’t wait for golfers to try this shoe.”

The PHANTOMCAT NITRO is made of sleek, full-grain leather offering a guaranteed one year of water protection and is available in four different color selections. The shoe also comes in a NITRO wide version.

With the release, PUMA elevates shoe technology to a completely new level.

With this shoe, PUMA debuts Flexspike cleat innovative technology. The Flexspikes are figure-eight shaped and integrated into the shoe itself, which improves weight distribution and traction by increasing the surface contact of the cleats with the ground, ultimately strengthening grip and traction. The foot is able to maintain versatility through impact.

The nitrogen-infused NITRO foam provides explosiveness through high rebound. The shoe provides stability heel-to-toe with a molded heel and an anatomically shaped last (which wards off any squished toes.

Ensuring your feet are comfortable, supported, and protected, and not heavy, soggy, or sore is of the utmost importance—more so than picking which animal print polo to wear. Nothing can ruin a round more than not physically being able to play because your dogs are barking.

If you’re teeing off in the Pacific Northwest, putting through passing showers in the Caribbean, or blasting out of bunkers in the desert, there is an ideal option for you. Here are our recommendations for the best golf shoes.

Best Overall Golf Shoe

Footjoy hyperflex carbon shoe.

There’s a reason why FootJoy is the No. 1 shoe in golf, and the new HyperFlex Carbon only reinforces that. Best Lightweight Golf Shoe

Adidas zg23 shoe.

Building on the ZG21, one of the more popular spiked golf shoes in recent years, Adidas unveiled the ZG23 early this year. Thanks to the introduction of Adidas’s Lightstrike and Lightstright Pro cushioning systems found in the brand’s basketball and running footwear, the ZG23 offers a completely redesigned outsole and upper for increased traction, stability, and comfort. Also featuring one-year waterproof protection, this shoe is as lightweight as it is comfortable. What’s more, the upper features at least 50 percent recycled content as part of the brand’s efforts to help reduce plastic waste.

Best Sporty Golf Shoe

Nike air zoom infinity tour next% shoe.

Similarly to what Adidas did with the new ZG23, Nike listened to customer feedback regarding its Infinity Tour to develop the Air Zoom Infinity Tour NEXT%. Not only did the brand increase the overall volume to give your foot more room—though, they still recommend ordering a half size up—Nike also updated the front cushioning to include two Zoom Air units for even more energy transfer during your swing. Available in nine colors, these sporty and fashionable golf shoes are comfortable, waterproof and lightweight.

Materials: Leather, mesh, and suede. BOA System: Yes. Spikes: Yes. Waterproof: Yes.

Most Technical Golf Shoe

Under armour hovr drive 2 shoe.

A favorite of three-time Major champion and 13-time PGA Tour winner Jordan Spieth, the Under Armour HOVR Drive 2 is littered with technical features that will help you stay comfortable throughout your round and even return energy during your swing. Also, the UA HOVR cushioning supports the natural motion of the foot during your swing to help eliminate impact, the strategically placed 3D print toe guard adds durability and protection, and the lower-profile UA Rotational Resistance spikes lockdown horizontal traction as you swing.

Materials: Microfiber and TPU. BOA System: No. Spikes: Yes. Waterproof: Yes.

Best for Shoe Casual Golfers

Nobull matryx shoe.

Founded in 2015 by two Reebok veterans, NoBull is billed as “a brand for people who work hard and don’t believe in excuses.” Popular among the CrossFit community, NoBull ventured into golf by signing pro Scott Stallings, as well as becoming the official training apparel and footwear brand of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. Looking more like a trainer than a golf shoe, NoBull’s sporty Matryx features durable, breathable, and wicking- and abrasion-resistant materials woven from synthetic fibers. This water-resistant shoe is comfortable, lightweight, and versatile, able to be worn on and off the course.

Buy Now on NoBull: $179

Most Breathable Golf Shoe

Ecco biom c4 shoe.

Like the aforementioned NoBull Matryx, upon first glance, it’s hard to tell if the Ecco Biom C4 is a sneaker, running shoe, or golf shoe. Featuring the brand’s Exhaust Grid technology that directs air flow toward your sole to keep your feet cool, Gore-Tex Surround for 360-degree waterproof protection, and a removable Ortholite insole, the comfortable Ecco Biom C4 has been heralded as one of the most breathable golf shoes on the market today.

Materials: Performance leather. BOA System: Yes. Spikes: No. Waterproof: Yes.

Buy Now on Ecco: $250

Best Spikeless Golf Shoe

Puma ignite elevate shoe.

Released early this year, the Elevate is Puma’s latest iteration of its Ignite collection. Featuring the brand’s proprietary Ignite Foam cushioning in the midsole that provides as much comfort as it does energy-return for reduced foot fatigue, the shoe’s structure is backed by an ExoShell design that combines engineered mesh uppers with TPU film underneath. Coupled with Puma’s strong and lightweight PWRFRAME and PWRCAGE technology for further support and stability, the shoe’s spikeless concentric traction pattern provides a greater grip in any direction.

Materials: Mesh and TPU film. BOA System: Yes. Spikes: No. Waterproof: Yes.

Buy Now on Amazon: $130

Best Crossover Golf Shoe

G/fore mg4x2 shoe.

Cross training and golf combine in the versatile G/Fore MG4x2, which can be worn on and off the course. It features a G/Dry upper constructed with water- and stain-resistant engineered stretch knit along with internal waterproof lining, a reinforced toe overlay that keeps feet dry and protected, and a 360-degree molded heel cup that prevents heels from slipping when walking or swinging. A sawtooth sole traction pattern keeps you in control whether you’re playing in wet conditions or walking from the clubhouse to the car.

Materials: Polyester knit mesh, TPU, and leather vamp. BOA System: No. Spikes: No. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Classic Golf Shoe

Cole haan originalgrand tour shoe.

Boasting an iconic golf shoe silhouette in a time where more cross-training, sneaker-like footwear is gaining popularity, the Cole Haan OriginalGrand Tour is made of waterproof leather sealed to the seams to keep you dry on the course. The shoe’s performance traction pattern outsole keeps you grounded when walking or swinging, while a performance footbed foam and molded sock liner provide extra support and cushioning. Last but not least, it features welt detailing that’s customary of traditional golf shoes.

Materials: Waterproof leather, TPU plate, and EVA midsole. BOA System: No. Spikes: Yes. Waterproof: Yes.

What to Consider Before Buying the Best Golf Shoes:

Golf is a game of personalization. While rooted in the same similar mechanics, golf swings and speeds differ from person to person—what works for you might not work for someone else. The same goes for the equipment you use and clothes you wear. Golf shoes are no exception. With models ranging from classic leather silhouettes to hybrid spikeless cross trainers, there is an option for everyone with plenty of factors to consider, including but not limited to price, material, waterproofing, the BOA Fit System, and the biggest question surrounding golf shoes today: spikes or spikeless?

Material: Golf shoes can be made from a variety of materials, including leather, suede, mesh, nylon, and so on. And what they’re made of is directly linked to the style. A cross-training, athletic, hybrid shoe, for example, is usually comprised of synthetic fibers, similar to the trainers you’d wear off the course, while a more traditional golf shoe will be made of leather or thicker stuff. These different materials have varying weights, features, and properties, so be sure to do your due diligence when finding the right one for you, your game, and your needs.

Waterproofing: Going hand-in-hand with your shoe’s material is its ability to repel water while keeping you comfortable and dry for all 18 holes. There’s nothing worse than having wet, soggy and heavy shoes and socks when you’re trying to not only play your best golf, but, more importantly, have fun. Thankfully, these days, many golf shoes are 100 percent waterproof, with many brands offering one- or two-year waterproof warranties. Also, be mindful of where you play: a golfer in Phoenix probably doesn’t need 100 percent waterproof shoes, whereas someone in Seattle would.

Spike vs. Spikeless: As golf shoes and their technology continue to evolve, traditional silhouettes with replaceable outsole spikes are battling for supremacy with lighter, versatile, spikeless styles. While both types offer great traction, spikeless golf shoes have gained popularity due to their cross functionality on and off the course. Like determining whether you need a 100 percent waterproof shoe or something that’s water-resistant based on where you play, the same scenarios should be assessed when determining if you need greater grip with a spiked golf shoe or would benefit from the versatility of a spikeless one.

What Golf Shoes Do Pro's Wear

In the world of professional golf the top players think about every single aspect of their golf setup. They tinker with their clubs to make sure they can perform at their best and they do not compromise when it comes to what they wear either, especially when it comes to their feet. They want to make sure they wear the best golf shoes for them to compete.

Video: Best Golf Shoes 2022

After all, the feet are the only part of the body to be in contact with the ground throughout the swing so it stands to reason that they need shoes to keep them balanced, stable, and give good grip. Additionally all the top players hit the ball a long way and most of them use the ground as a way of producing that distance. Tour players are also clearly aware of how they look on the course and television too so modern golf shoes have to look good as well. So which models do the top-20 and high profile male players in the world wear? We have taken a look below to give you some small insight into the world of professional golf and what is great about all the models is that we can wear them too! Also if you are in the market for new golf shoes, check out some of our guides on the best spikeless golf shoes , most comfortable golf shoes , or best golf shoes for wide feet .

Cuater The Wildcard Leather Golf Shoes

Worn by - Jon Rahm

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 7-13 Colors: 2

Spaniard Jon Rahm signed with Callaway in 2021 and with that he started to wear TravisMathew apparel. Within that brand is Cuater, the shoe designing branch and Rahm currently uses a model called The Wildcard.

They have been inspired by South Carolina and are a lightweight, spikeless design made from 100% leather. A SweetSpot Cushioning System adds comfort to the shoe that has been designed with the simple, casual style.

There are two nice colors available, the white model pictured above which Rahm wore during his 2021 US Open victory, and a black design.

Adidas ZG21 Golf Shoes

Worn by - Dustin Johnson , Collin Morikawa , Xander Schauffele

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 6.5-12 Colors: 4 (plus special editions)

adidas has some of the best player's in the world contracted to them; including Major winners Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa , as well as Olympic Gold medalist Xander Schauffele . All three Americans use the ZG21 shoes and given the review we did on them it is not hard to see why.

From a looks perspective adidas really got it right here, keeping a classic design but implementing some modern flourishes as you can see from the 'USA' special edition above.

The design performed really well too and the first thing we noticed was how light these are compared to the Tour360 XT in particular - 20% lighter in fact.

Softness and comfort came from the Lightstrike foam and famous Boost technology whilst they performed brilliantly on every shot from every lie.

FootJoy Premiere Series Tarlow Golf Shoes

Worn by - Justin Thomas , Webb Simpson

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 6-14 Colors: 3 (plus special editions)

Justin Thomas is regularly one of the best dressed golfers on Tour and what goes on his feet, as well as Webb Simpson's, is part of that. Both of them wear the Tarlow from FootJoy's Premiere Series which is named after Bill and Dick Tarlow who bought the FootJoy business in 1957 and focused the brand primarily on golf.

A modern take on a classic toe cap design, the shoes are made with a natural grain leather along with a croc print in the heel, cap toe and lace area.

They really look the part but the spiked design also gave us ample grip, good waterproofing, and top-notch comfort because of the soft sheepskin lining.

Puma Ignite Pwradapt Caged Shoes

Worn by - Bryson DeChambeau

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 7-15 Colors: 4

Bryson is not the player to take any of his golf gear lightly so it says a lot that he continues to wear the Ignite Pwradapt Caged shoes from Puma.

The big story here is the locked-in stability which was outstanding because no matter how hard we swung, we felt a connection with the ground and good traction thanks to the cleats.

The underfoot cushioning from the Ignite foam felt lovely and we also like the sporty, sneaker-like aesthetic.

FootJoy Pro/SL Carbon Shoes

Worn by - Louis Oosthuizen

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 6-14 Colors: 2

South African Oosthuizen opts for the Carbon version of the FootJoy Pro/SL, which is a shoe he has worn for a while now. One of the most popular shoes in the world, it is surprising more top players don't wear them in competition but regardless Louis seems to be a fan as are we.

A model which made our list of the best golf shoes for walking , the Carbon is a significant upgrade on the regular model.

The name itself comes from the carbon fibre inlay which runs along the length of the shoe which aids stability, and there is also extra padding around the ankle which we greatly appreciated during testing.

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Shoes

Worn by - Brooks Koepka

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 7-12 Colors: 8 (plus special editions)

A model of shoe you will have seen on the feet of Brooks Koepka , these shoes were inspired by his habit of chipping and putting in Nike running shoes and as such they are designed to provide speed and comfort to golfers.

In testing we found them to be extremely comfortable and from a looks perspective we think they look great not only in the traditional colors, but also the special edition versions like the PGA Championship design above.

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Shoe Review

FootJoy DryJoys Tour Golf Shoes

Worn by - Patrick Cantlay

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 6-14 Colors: 3

Patrick Cantlay is one of very few golfers not to be wearing the Premiere Series or Pro/SL's from FootJoy because instead he goes for DryJoys Tour shoes.

The DryJoys line was first launched in 1989. A waterproof shoe was something the entire golf shoe industry was looking for at the time, and the DryJoys from FootJoy turned out to be the answer.

The brand continues to refine the shoe and Cantlay's actually have the BOA closure system for a snug and easily adjustable fit.

FootJoy Tour X Shoes

Worn by - Harris English

pga tour tennis shoes

Another different FootJoy shoe to be seen on Tour is the Tour X. Briefly worn by Patrick Reed , the design is worn by Harris English pretty much exclusively.

When the design came out FootJoy made very clear it took on board feedback from the tour and combined the best attributes of some of their most popular models, which helps explain why we gave it five stars in our comprehensive review too.

As soon as you lace them up, the PowerStrap across the midfoot comes into its own, providing superb levels of support and stability. And when swinging, the spikes underfoot deliver excellent grip across the board.

FootJoy Tour X Shoes Review

FootJoy Premiere Series Packard Golf Shoes

Worn by - Abraham Ancer , Patrick Reed

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 6-14 Colors: 2 (plus special editions)

Another Premiere Series shoe to be very popular out on Tour is the Packard.

Available in all black, or all white, along with some special edition versions, the shoe is inspired by Frederick Packard, FootJoy’s founder and a shoe pioneer who drove the adoption of many modern manufacturing and design innovations that are still used today.

They are truly stunning shoes and feature premium touches like the pebble grain leather as well as the calfskin croc print in the saddle area.

Additionally FootJoy has combined the VersaTrax+ outsole with Pulsar Low Profile Cleats to give outstanding grip and traction when needed.

Under Armour Spieth 5 Golf Shoes

Worn by - Jordan Spieth

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 7-11 Colors: 1

Spieth turned many heads when he was wearing the new Spieth 5 shoes at Augusta National in 2021.

He himself was involved in the design and the other big story is the inclusion of a 4th dimension of traction called internal traction. This manifests itself in the form of a new and unique 3D moulded footbed that features an additional wrap over the inside and top of the foot.

Now when it comes to traction and grip we should admit we tested the spikeless version, not the cleated model in the picture above, but performance was still right up there with some of the best spikeless golf shoes out there.

Under Armour Spieth 5 SL Shoe Review

Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 2 Golf Shoes

Worn by - Rory McIlroy , Scottie Scheffler

What Golf Shoes Do Pro's Wear

Sizes: 3.5-16 Colors: 4 (plus special editions)

Rory McIlroy is the biggest player to use the Nike Victory Tour 2 shoes.

The premium leather gives a refined look with some cool modern touches like the stitching, Nike swoosh effect, and of course the Air Zoom unit.

Speaking of Air Zoom, this technology makes these shoes incredibly comfortable because of the cushioning on offer, and the Fitsole sock liner adds a plush, premium feel too. It really wraps around and underneath the foot well.

Nike Golf Roshe G Tour Shoes

Worn by - Viktor Hovland

What Golf Shoes Do Pro's Wear

Sizes: 3.5-16 Colors: 8

Viktor Hovland is one of many golfers to use the Roshe G Tour shoes from Nike. Available in lots of different colors, the design is very understated and classy by Nike's standards.

Nike has also used a waterproof microfiber, synthetic leather upper and incorporated a spiked sole into these shoes so you can use them all year round

Adidas CodeChaos Shoes

Worn by - Tyrrell Hatton , Daniel Berger

What Golf Shoes Do Pro's Wear

Sizes: 6.5-11 Colors: 5

Both Hatton and Berger continue to wear the previous generation Codechaos shoe from adidas.

Of course many people focus on the unique look of the shoes but we found them to perform well too. They are lightweight, breathable, waterproof, and the Full length Boost cushioning features across the entire midsole, creating energy rebound and putting a spring in your step.

Asics Gel-Ace Tour Golf Shoes

Worn by - Hideki Matsuyama

What Golf Shoes Do Pro's Wear

Sizes: 6-13 Colors: N/A

2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama opts for Asics Gel-Ace Tour shoes and has done for a while now.

Given how hard these are to get hold of, we haven't been able to review them but we do know the brand makes them in a variety of colors which Hideki takes full advantage of out on Tour.

G/FORE Gallivanter Golf Shoes

Worn by - Phil Mickelson

pga tour tennis shoes

Sizes: 7-15 Colors: 4 (plus special editions)

Our final Tour pro shoe is the G/FORE Gallivanter worn by 2021 PGA Champion Phil Mickelson.

Featuring his iconic Masters celebration on the heel, the shoes are 100% waterproof thanks to pebble full-grain leather and the bespoke cleat design on the bottom gives optimal on-course traction.

We were recently sent a pair in white with a camouflage sole and they felt like such a premium product that we didn't want to take them out of the box!

Inside Scottie Scheffler’s unique footwork as he seeks another Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The No. 1 player in the world looks like he has rollerblades strapped to his golf shoes.

As Scottie Scheffler delivers his club down the slot and strikes the ball, his right foot lifts off the ground and slides toward the target. Scheffler swings with so much power that sometimes, his left foot also leaves the earth, shifting backward while his big toe simultaneously rotates counterclockwise.

We asked ChatGPT who had the perfect golf swing. While refusing to name just one, it referenced Ben Hogan’s precision and Tiger Woods’ fundamentals and Adam Scott’s graceful swing. Scheffler did not come up.

“It might not look the most beautiful, but he does everything so well to hit the ball in the middle of the club face,” says Tom Kim, Scheffler’s peer on the PGA Tour and fellow Dallas resident. “No further questions needed.”

Scheffler’s quirky footwork has been the source of constant wonder and analysis on PGA Tour broadcasts. That won’t stop at this week’s Masters , where the 2022 champion will look to capture his second career major and third victory already this year. The “Scottie shuffle” will be on full display at Augusta National .

How does the best ball striker in the world have such a peculiar swing?

Scheffler got lucky. When he was six years old, Scheffler’s parents, Diane and Scott, picked up their bags, left New Jersey and moved to Dallas for Diane’s career. Shortly thereafter, they joined Royal Oaks Country Club. That’s where Scheffler started taking lessons from head professional Randy Smith, the coach of Justin Leonard, Colt Knost, Ryan Palmer and a handful of other highly successful tour pros.

Smith’s philosophy is simple and might have been the catalyst for Scheffler’s meteoric rise in the professional ranks.

“I teach based on what the person can do, not what I think it should look like,” Smith says.

Tired: Cupid Shuffle. Wired: Scottie Shuffle. 💘 #Qi10Driver #TeamTaylorMade pic.twitter.com/THXqrefR6m — TaylorMade Golf (@TaylorMadeGolf) February 14, 2024

Scheffler’s footwork isn’t a new element in his swing. He’s been moving his feet like that since he was a teenager. When Scheffler was in high school, his right foot started its signature slide in his downswing — before even striking the ball.

“Scottie’s foot used to release a lot earlier,” says Troy Van Biezen, Scheffler’s performance coach. “Now, when he’s playing well, his foot slides after the ball is struck, post-impact.”

Scheffler’s move morphed over the years. A rapid growth spurt, one that brought him from 5-foot-6 to 6-3, forced him to re-acclimate to a taller, lankier body and naturally, his swing evolved with it. It took several years for Scheffler to iron out the kinks and pains that came with puberty. He battled back issues and his scores ballooned. But his team encouraged him to be patient. Scheffler might have been momentarily tempted, but Smith never allowed him to remove those unique fundamentals in his golf swing to fit an aesthetic mold.

“I wholeheartedly believe that if any other golf coach got a hold of Scottie, they would have tried to change his swing and probably would have ruined him,” says Van Biezen. “A lot of golf coaches out there want to put their trademark on a golf swing. Randy has never been that way.”

Scheffler’s feet never got planted, and his game took off.

“I think a lot of people said that (my footwork) would make it hard for me to be consistent, hard for me to play under pressure with that much going on in my swing,” Scheffler said Tuesday at Augusta National. “I’ve had the same coach since I was seven years old, and he’s taught me for 20 years now how to swing a golf club.

“He hasn’t wanted to change it yet, so I don’t think we’re going to change it anytime soon.”

Masters 2024 Big Board: How Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler and everyone else stack up

Scheffler’s intrinsic footwork is representative of a trendy skill in golf instruction, one that many elite players work tirelessly to manufacture into their own swings.

He uses ground reactive forces to generate speed. The term might sound fancy, but it’s basic physics. Scheffler’s feet push so hard into the ground that an equal and opposite reaction sends the force up through his lower body, allowing for maximum power at impact and more distance. Those forces also explain why Scheffler’s feet fly off the turf.

The trait isn’t unique to Scheffler. Several players throughout the game’s history have succeeded on tour with swings founded on seemingly unconventional foot movement. Greg Norman is perhaps the most obvious example. In his prime, the two-time major champion would lash at the ball, causing his legs to shift after impact just like Scheffler’s.

“Greg Norman, Johnny Miller, Walter Hagen — even Bobby Jones would hit shots and he’d be on his tippy toes,” says Golf Channel analyst and former PGA Tour player Brandel Chamblee. “There are loads of players who’ve had footwork (like Scheffler), and it’s even more prevalent now.”

pga tour tennis shoes

Regardless of who Scheffler evoked on the golf course, Smith worked with what was in front of him on the driving range at Royal Oaks. The free-flowing nature of Scheffler’s game that was supported by Smith’s methodology allowed him to mature into the world-dominant player he is today.

On the PGA Tour, Scheffler is currently ranked No. 1 in strokes gained tee to green by almost an entire shot. The gap between Scheffler and the No. 2 player on that list (Xander Schauffele) is larger than the gap between No. 20 and No. 109, according to The Athletic contributor Justin Ray.

Scheffler’s on-and-off putting woes have been a subject of concern, but since Scheffler is far and away the best ball striker on the tour, it almost doesn’t matter what he does on the greens. If the Texan even has a decent day with his putter but hits the ball like he usually does, he’ll blow away the rest of the field.

But like all athletes, a move that produces such astounding numbers requires upkeep.

Van Biezen has known Scheffler since he was 14 years old. Like Smith, Van Biezen always appreciated Scheffler’s intrinsic footwork but he also recognized that it necessitated a special level of care off the golf course.

Van Biezen, who now works full-time with the NHL ’s Dallas Stars but assigns daily workouts to Scheffler to complete with his traveling physiotherapist, says that he “reverse engineers” his players’ golf swings. For Scheffler, that means observing his singular moves and building routines that support those specific muscle patterns in a controlled environment: the gym.

Most professional golfers place a premium on balance-related movements in the training room, but Scheffler’s dramatic footwork requires a particular focus on single-leg work. If Van Biezen notices that one side of Scheffler’s body isn’t in line with the other, he’ll adjust his daily exercises accordingly, even down to the number of sets Scheffler does on his right and left sides.

“If I see he’s not loading his right hip as well, I might do three sets on the right and only one on the left,” Van Biezan says.

A Masters winner’s new purpose? Bringing ‘humanity’ to its broadcast

It might not look like it when Scheffler is slipping and sliding on tee boxes, but his swing indicates a highly impressive sense of bodily awareness, one that is innate to his game but also has to be supported in the gym.

The way Scheffler works his limbs when he’s launching a 3-wood around the bend of a fairway or floating a delicate 75-yard wedge onto an elevated green is only possible because of his athleticism.

Scheffler doesn’t care what he looks like — if the ball is going where he wants it to go, that’s all that matters. He swings to score, not to look good.

“He’s got the best pair of hands I’ve ever seen in my life, for a golfer,” Smith says. “He has a feel for what he wants the golf ball to do. He isn’t a robot. He’s an athlete.”

To Smith, that’s what it all comes down to: Scheffler is a freak athlete who happens to love golf. How else do you expect him to swing?

Outside of his PGA Tour duties, Scheffler is an avid pickleball player. A video circulated of the Texan beating the No. 1 pickleballer in the world, Ben Johns, in a rally during a celebrity tournament in November. Scheffler also played on the Highland Park Varsity basketball team in high school and is known to shoot a few hoops at home in between tour stops. In describing Scheffler’s swing one last time before hanging up the phone, Smith casually mentions that the No. 1 golfer in the world can still dunk a basketball.

“You go and get me another 6-3 guy who can slam dunk a basketball, somebody who can throw a baseball as fast as you can throw it, somebody that can throw a football farther than you think, and let’s see how they swing a golf club,” Smith says.

Scheffler might not look the part, but he’s the poster child for the undying “golfers are athletes” campaign.

His unpredictable and jarring move is rooted in feel. The flow and freedom in Scheffler’s swing — bolstered by rock-solid fundamentals — allows him to deliver the golf club into the golf ball exactly how he wants to. Scheffler didn’t become an elite ball striker by chasing aesthetics and planting his unruly feet to the ground.

He did it by understanding he could climb the ladder with rollerblades on.

Golf Shoes For 2024 (Including 5 Shoes Pros Swear By)

In order to play your best, you need the best golf gear .

You need clubs, a golf bag, a golf towel, and don’t forget a few golf balls. Your shopping doesn’t stop there - you also need an awesome pair of golf shoes.

Do you want stylish, functional, or both? Do you want to look like your favorite PGA (or LPGA) tour professional or blaze your own path?

Regardless of how you answer these questions, we can help.

We have developed our top 20 list of golf shoes for 2024, including 5 that famous professionals currently wear when they’re trying to win millions on the course.

Find the right golf shoe for your game and get more out of your next round.

Types Of Golf Shoes

Not all golf shoes are the same - there are several different types for different types of players.

Make sure you pick a golf shoe that matches how you enjoy the game.

Spiked Golf Shoes

If you’re over 40-years-old you probably remember the days of “real” spikes.

Golf shoes used to have metal spikes and while they provided great grip, they also tore up the course, especially the greens. In the mid-90s they started to be prohibited and quickly were not allowed on the majority of courses across the country.

A few PGA professionals still use metal, but amateurs are not allowed to use them.

When we say spikes now, we refer to soft spikes .

They’re made of plastic and provide grip to the ground without putting holes all over the putting surfaces. Soft spiked golf shoes are the most common and what the majority of golfers leverage.

Spikeless Golf Shoes

If you’re a casual player, do you need a pair of shoes that can only be used on the golf course?

You could always play in tennis shoes or running shoes, but there are some advantages to purchasing golf shoes.

Many companies offer spikeless golf shoes. Think of them as athletic footwear designed for the course, but can be worn around town.

The golf boot is designed to look like a hiking boot, but often has soft spikes on the bottom.

They’re by far the most waterproof option for golfer shoes and they also provide additional warmth in the winter. You can also check out a review of the best waterproof golf shoes at Red Birdie Golf .

For most golfers, a golf boot shoe is one of several pairs they own. You break them out in bad weather or during the offseason. We wouldn’t recommend you buy golf boots for hot, summer rounds.

Golf Sandal

Do you want your golf shoes to scream “I’m a casual player ”? Go with a golf sandal!

They’re the same as sandals you might wear to the pool or hanging out in the backyard, but they have soft spikes.

They’re comfortable and are perfect for a trip to the driving range or a par 3 course. You may not want to use them to walk a full 18 holes.

Qualities Of The Best Golf Shoes

There are several factors you should consider prior to buying a new pair of golf shoes.

How you rank these factors will depend on how you play the game and what is important to you.

Quality - are the shoes well-made? Are they constructed with high-quality materials?

If you buy a high-quality pair of golf shoes they can last for a couple years. Be careful if you settle on a discount shoe, because you may end up spending more long term.

Brand - is the brand important to you?

Do you want a famous and well-known golf brand or do you not care what the label says?

For the most part, we recommend you stick with proven golf brands. They have been building and selling golf shoes for years. Comfort - comfort has been the most significant improvement in golf shoes over the last 10 years.

Many golfer shoes used to be closer to dress shoes than athletic gear, but that has changed.

You can now buy a pair that are just as comfortable as top-end running shoes. A key quality you want to consider if you enjoy walking the course instead of renting a cart.

Price - our top 20 list includes shoes priced from $85 to $230.

Everyone has a different budget, so you’ll have to decide if you want the best regardless of price or if you’re looking for the best deal.

Do you want a single pair of golf shoes or do you like options?

Combine these 4 qualities based on your requirements to find the perfect shoe for you. Now let's look at our favorites.

Golf can be very expensive—between clubs , membership dues/green fees, and balls not yet lost to the pond, the costs associated with the sport are enough to rip a bigger divot in your wallet than most guys could on the course. But it doesn't have to be that way if you know where to look, especially for footwear. While many golf shoes can cost well above $200, Sports Illustrated recently spotted a popular style from New Balance that might be one of the best pairs for under $100.

Right now, the New Balance Fresh Foam Contend SL golf shoes are on sale at PGA Tour Superstore for just under $80—a 20% discount on the original price of $100. These golf shoes are the highest-rated pair from New Balance at PGATSS, with over 50 five-star ratings, many of which are from frequent players. They're available in sizes 7 to 16 with options for medium, wide, or extra-wide widths.

the new balance fresh foam contend sl golf shoes, seen here in white, are on sale at pga tour superstore

The New Balance Fresh Foam Contend SL Golf Shoes in White.

These New Balance golf shoes combine the brand's expertise in running and comfort with key features golfers want. The upper is made from a combination of waterproof engineered mesh and leather, with an added toe bumper that further combats morning dew and light rain. It uses the brand's sought-after Fresh Foam midsole to bring cushion and support underfoot with proper arches that promote stability. The sole is spikeless, instead utilizing a mosaic-like pattern of molded rubber grips to keep feet planted while swinging.

Despite the many great features, if the sizing is wrong, it's all for naught. These shoes are known to run about a half-size small, so it's wise to consider ordering up. Furthermore, if you have wide feet, factor in the two extended width offerings to find the best fit. If there's a silver lining, it's that most other golf shoes won't be available in such a vast array of sizes, so there's bound to be a pair that fits every guy perfectly. That's what many shoppers have found so far.

New Balance Fresh Foam Contend SL Golf Shoes in Charcoal, $80 (was $100) at PGA Tour Superstore

The New Balance Fresh Foam Contend SL Golf Shoes in Charcoal.

After wearing the New Balance Fresh Foam Contend SL golf shoes, shoppers agree that they're decently lightweight, comfortable enough for a full day of walking, and very nice looking. "I love the feel and looks of these," one shopper said. "The sole is hard rubber, so you can stay stable while swinging but gives a sneaker-like feel while walking." This shopper also urged guys to not be shy about trying the extra-wide after having experimented with it and stumbling on the perfect fit.

Many other shoppers praised these golf shoes for their "sneaker-like" feel. "This golf shoe feels more like a comfortable sneaker," one shopper said, while another added that "it is as comfortable as their running shoes."

Shoppers were mostly in agreement that the shoe's waterproofing was up to par. One shopper who wore the shoes in varying conditions said they remain unphased when encountering bad weather. "I have played these in both dry and soaking wet conditions now," they said. "Great traction and comfort in both conditions. My feet stayed dry in the wet conditions, too."

Golf doesn't have to be ridiculously expensive, and these New Balance golf shoes are proof. For just under $80, you can have a close-to-custom fit in a shoe that's said to remain comfortable for hours of wear. We're unsure how long the sale price will be live for, so if you need a go-to golf shoe that can be counted on for comfort and durability while keeping you stable mid-swing, pick a pair of these up while the sale is live.

The PGA TOUR Superstore has grown rapidly since 2003, with 54 brick-and-mortar locations across the United States. I also appreciate their online store’s healthy selection of clubs, balls, bags, footwear apparel, and technology.

I’ve been playing golf since I was four, so I’ve seen it all. But I still get excited about buying new clubs and accessories. That’s why it’s always enjoyable to walk into a PGA TOUR Superstore and browse the same clubs my favorite golfers use.

Here are the top 7 reasons to shop at PGA TOUR Superstore:

  • Huge selection
  • Good prices for every budget
  • Online and in-person locations
  • Hitting bays let you test the clubs
  • Services include club repair, regripping, club fitting, and lessons
  • Everything you need for golf is under one roof
  • 90-Day Retur n  Policy  lets you take the clubs for a test run

But there are many options to buy new golf equipment, and it’s not cheap, so be sure to read to the end to see if PGA TOUR Superstore is right for you.

After reading this post, you will know:

  • The basics about the PGA TOUR Superstore
  • Where its outlets are located
  • The pros and cons of the membership program
  • How to find PGA TOUR Superstore promo codes and coupons

The PGA TOUR Superstore features 54 locations  stretching from the East to the West Coast.

Florida has the largest concentration, with 10 stores between Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville. Texas is a close second with 9 stores, while California is in third with 6 locations around the state.

You can check the table below to see if a PGA TOUR Superstore is open in your city or nearby.

If you do not have the luxury of a PGA TOUR Superstore in your area, enjoy the selection of products online. You can find an array of golf clubs, balls, bags, apparel, footwear, technology, and accessories from the biggest brands delivered to your doorstep.

Naturally, you lose the experience of testing products in-store and enjoy the services and amenities. However, it is a suitable alternative to securing your desired golf gear at a comfortable price.

Anyone in the US can get free shipping on orders over $99. Players’ Club Plus Golf members receive free ground shipping on all orders. It typically takes up to 10 business days to arrive in the 48 contiguous states.

International shipping is also available to 100 countries using their partner, Borderfree. This is helpful for South African golfers or digital nomads like myself who want to order a set from Argentina.

Yes, the PGA TOUR Superstore is affiliated with the PGA TOUR, as it is the tour’s official off-course retailing partner. However, the PGA TOUR does not own the PGA TOUR Superstore. The retailer is a subsidiary of the Blank Family of Businesses founded by Arthur J. Blank.

Before diving into the realm of golf retail, Blank co-founded another mega-successful operation known as Home Depot. The Blank Family of Businesses is also the owner and operator of the Atlanta Falcons and MLS outfit Atlanta United FC.

Top 7 reasons golfers shop at the pga tour superstore for equipment.

After receiving feedback from a buddy who recently visited a PGA TOUR Superstore, we found 7 top reasons to shop at the retailer. The scale of the stores, unbeatable prices, affordable services, and amenities make it the ideal one-stop shop for amateur golfers seeking new gear.

There are other advantages to the PGA TOUR Superstore, like fittings, club repair, and coaching. However, I left those out because not every store offers these services, and it’s best to manage your expectations.

I’m blown away by the size of the outlet that my buddy visited in Florida. The abundance of clubs, footwear, and gear overwhelmed him for a moment, and then he became like a kid in a candy store, unsure of which section to start looking at.

Besides equipment, he was impressed with the overall facilities, including hitting bays and greens. The facility he visited in Jacksonville also offers PGA TOUR Superstore lessons, but that might not be the case at the store in your city.

The size of the stores allows the brand to pack every golf item you need under one roof, giving you a healthy selection. Given the size of the company, PGA TOUR Superstore is afforded greater bargaining power with suppliers than some of its smaller competitors. This allows shoppers to enjoy outstanding discounts on renowned brands.

I briefly touched on the bargaining power of PGA TOUR Superstore and the abundance of equipment in their stores. This allows them to price their golf clubs, footwear, apparel, and technology products competitively.

Obviously, newer models may carry the same premium price tag you find elsewhere. However, their selection allows you to find options within your budget. For example, my buddy tested a new $400 Scotty Cameron and an older edition Odyssey for $35.

The company moves exceptional volumes of golf equipment and always has items on sale that you can take advantage of. You can also trade in old clubs and use the difference towards new clubs.

Alternatively, reap the rewards of well-priced PGA TOUR Superstore used clubs if you are not ready to fork out on a new set of golf clubs.

I’ve written a lot of reviews of golf equipment I’ve tested over the years, and PGA TOUR Superstore has a unique offering. You can buy from the comfort of your home or check it out from home and then head to the store to try it out.

Many online retailers have a large selection, but you can’t feel it, swing it, or hear how it sounds when you hit it. On the other hand, local golf shops offer a customized experience where you can test the equipment, but you can’t browse the latest clubs from your couch on a lazy Sunday.

PGA TOUR Superstore has the best of both worlds.

When you shop online , you miss out on the experience of a PGA TOUR Superstore. A trip to one of their outlets makes you feel like a professional. Besides inspecting the wealth of gear, you actually get to try it out in the store, using their practice bays.

My buddy informed me that two types of practice bays are on offer, depending on the facilities. The first is a standard bay, where you can hit away and test new clubs. The other practice bay is fancier and is equipped with a simulator, allowing you to play virtual rounds of golf in the store.

Unfortunately, the Practice+Play Bays with simulators are only available at certain outlets. The PGA TOUR Superstore does charge for using the simulator and practice bays. However, you can lower your expenses by paying the PGA TOUR Superstore membership fee.

The store in Jacksonville that my buddy visited also had an epic putting green. He managed to work on long, medium, and short putts on a smooth rolling surface, giving him a clearer idea of the best putter for his game.

I welcome the services offered by the PGA TOUR Superstore at select locations, as it reinforces its mission to be a one-stop shop for golf. The location in Jacksonville offers club repairs, regripping, custom fittings , and coaching clinics.

I discovered that a 1 hour PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting for irons, a driver, or a putter would set me back $99.99 at the Jacksonville facility.  This is reasonable compared to other entities that offer club fittings.

Alternatively, a 45-minute hybrid, fairway wood, or wedge fitting would cost $59.99. Ensure you book on the   PGA TOUR Superstore  website in advance.

Club repairs and regripping costs vary depending on the materials and locations. You can save in any case with the Players Club Plus Golf membership. It gets you 30% off club regripping and 50% off select club repairs.

The size of PGA TOUR Superstore facilities, equipment, amenities, and services makes it a one-stop shop for golf. It saves us from acquiring golf clubs and balls from one facility and technology, golf clothing , and footwear from somewhere else — ultimately improving convenience.

I also like that we can practice and test different equipment under one roof.  My buddy spent 3 hours in the store trying everything from drivers to spikeless golf shoes. Having everything under one roof allowed him to take his time and thoroughly test all equipment before making a decision.

What works on the simulator may not perform on the golf course. That is why the PGA TOUR Superstore offers a 90-day Return Policy on golf clubs.

If you are unhappy with how the club plays, return it for a store credit for a different golf club.

Although you do not get your money back, the store is fair enough to give you a second chance. They also do not charge a return fee, meaning they credit your account for the complete value of the golf club you returned.

PGA TOUR Superstore Membership Review

PlayersClub pga tour superstore shopping review

I noticed that the retailer offers 2 annual membership options for golfers. The Players’ Club package is an entry-level option that earns points for every dollar spent, a birthday reward, and discounts on selected goods. It is a free membership  and takes less than a minute to sign up.

The Players’ Club Plus Golf is my preferred option because it offers exceptional value for money.  Annual fees range from $99 to $199, depending on your location, but my buddy found the Jacksonville outlet highly reasonable. The Players’ Club Plus membership fee was only $140 for the year.

This entitles him to unlimited 30-minute sessions in the Standard Practice Bays and discounts on club regripping and club repair services. Facilities with Practice+Play Bays will give Players’ Club Plus Members a 20% discount for the service.

A PGA TOUR Superstore Gift Card  with a Players’ Club Plus membership is also a worthwhile gift for your golf-loving friends and family.

Points For Every Dollar Spent

The Players’ Club Plus and Free Membership earn members points for every dollar spent. A bonus $10 reward is issued after spending $500. You can then use the points towards apparel, accessories, or footwear purchases.

Unlimited Practice Bay Sessions (No Sim)

The Players’ Club Plus subscription entitles you to unlimited 30-minute practice sessions in the Standard bays. This means they are not equipped with a launch monitor and simulator, leaving you with no insight into your shots. However, it’s still perfect for working on your swing and testing out a wealth of new and pre-owned equipment.

20% Off Practice+Play Bays

Practice+Play Bays are a brilliant way to capture data on your swing and play a virtual round of golf to test new clubs. The Players’ Club Plus Membership offers a 20% discount off a 60-minute session in the Practice+Play Bays. Before you get excited, PGA TOUR Superstore only offers the setup in a few locations.

I found the Boise, Idaho store, charges $29.99 for a 60-minute session in the bay. After applying the discount, you only need to pay $23.99. It is far more affordable than purchasing a home golf simulator. Especially if you only use the simulator a few times a year.

30 Free Club Regripping Services

Joining the Players’ Club Plus team gives you access to 30 free regripping services. In other words, they do not charge you for the labor. When you purchase new shafts, club heads, or grips, they will fit them for you.

50% Off Select Club Repairs

I noticed that the PGA TOUR Superstore provides a 50% discount on shaft and clubhead repair services. The discount only applies to the labor of the team and not the shafts or grips.

Different Amenities

While the PGA TOUR Superstore goes above and beyond for amateurs, not all stores are equipped with premium features. Practice+Play Bays is a big one for me. The technology is insightful, and the service is cost-effective, yet they are only available in 5 locations.

In addition, club regripping and repair services are a tremendous feature but are limited to selected stores. I would like to see the retailer offering these resources at more outlets to increase the value of the Players’ Club Plus membership for all members.

PGA TOUR Superstore Accessories To Consider

In addition to a huge selection of golf clubs, you can find thousands of balls, shoes, apparel, tech, bags, and more. Here are a few categories that stood out to me.

pga tour superstore review titleist pro v1 golf balls

PGATSS has plenty of golf balls to pick from. Right now, they have 119 kinds on their website.

They have many top tour golf balls like the famous Pro V1s from Titleist . These are a trusted favorite for many of us. If you want distance balls, look at Srixon’s Soft Feel . They can help you get the range you’re looking for. Finally, if you want balls that don’t spin too much, check out Bridgestone e6 .

You’ll find all types of balls, from simple 2-piece balls and more complex multi-layered ones. Plus, you can choose between different outer layers like surlyn or urethane. So, there’s something for every golfer.

There are also plenty of options for women, and there are personalized options for most major brands.

jordan golf shoes pga tour superstore review

The PGA TOUR Superstore has over 300 results for shoes for men and women. The Nike Jordan ADG 4 Golf Shoe is one of their top options at the moment and has the classic Jordan style.

You can find other golf shoes from big brands like FootJoy, Nike, G/FORE, Adidas, Under Armour, and Skechers.

If you’re looking for a deal, they have a sale category where shoes from these top brands are up to 40% off! And guess what? You can even shop the gear your favorite golf players use ! So, if you want to wear the shoes of Scottie Scheffler or the shirts of Rickie Fowler , you can find them here.

pga tour superstore polo

At the PGATSS, you won’t run out of choices for golf clothes. They have a big collection with over 2,000 items for both men and women. Looking for shorts or pants? They have inseams clearly labeled on the images as you browse.

They also have shirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, hats, belts, socks, and cool sunglasses. Some big names are there too, like PGA TOUR Apparel, Adidas, TravisMathew, Nike, FootJoy, Polo Ralph Lauren, Bad Birdie, and even Barstool Sports.

If you’re curious about what’s fresh in the store, check out the New Arrivals section. There are also deals in the sale section and special tournament gear . And just like the shoes, you can shop for clothes worn by famous golfers.

Coupons for the PGA TOUR Superstore are available on various media platforms, including Los Angeles Times and Golf Monthly. You can also find PGA TOUR Superstore promo codes on sites like Simply Codes.

Yes, the PGA TOUR Superstore does have a playability guarantee allowing you to return your clubs within 90 days from the date of purchase. It is called a Performance Guarantee by the retailer, and they provide a store credit for the complete value of the purchase price.

No, Home Depot does not own the PGA Superstore. It is owned by the Blank Family of Businesses, started by Home Depot co-founder Arthur M. Blank. Home Depot does not own the PGA Superstore despite the personal connection to the companies.

According to the PGA Superstore Employee CEO Dick Sullivan, the employees do not make commissions. He revealed this in an interview with Golf WRX , where he discussed the model behind the significant growth of the company.

Yes, PGA TOUR Superstore actively contributes to charity. They have partnered with First Tee , a youth development organization, to invest in the next generation of golfers. Through this partnership, the PGA TOUR Superstore and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation have committed $9.5 million to First Tee initiatives, including the Leadership Summit, which empowers and educates young golfers on leadership concepts. This dedication showcases the store’s commitment to giving back to the community and promoting the sport’s future.

After looking at the top 7 reasons golfers shop at PGA TOUR Superstore for equipment, I have to say I am impressed with the company. They stock an abundance of golf equipment for every price point and offer a welcoming environment to test equipment and work on your swing.

It is truly a one-stop shop for all your golfing needs and features more than just equipment. Several outlets offer professional fitting, regripping, golf club repair services, clinics, and private lessons.

I would like to see more stores carrying the Practice+Play Bays to expose amateurs to the advantage of golf shot analysis. However, I understand the technology is pricey, and the rollout to every store will take time.

Overall, I am impressed with what the PGA TOUR Superstore  is doing. I would definitely recommend visiting a brick-and-mortar store for the ultimate golfing experience.

Best irons in golf of 2024: Pure enjoyment

pga tour tennis shoes

In our effort to assemble the 2024 best irons , we have again compiled an expert panel of fitters to help you find out which of the 2024 irons is best for your game.

Ultimately the best way to find your personal best iron set is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

pga tour tennis shoes

We want to give you the tools and information to go out and find what works best for you by offering recommendations for your individual iron set wants and needs with insight and feedback from the people who work every single day to help golfers get peak performance out of their equipment.

Best irons of 2024: The process

The best fitters in the world see all the options available in the marketplace, analyze their performance traits, and pull from that internal database of knowledge and experience like a supercomputer when they are working with a golfer.

It’s essentially a huge decision tree derived from experience and boiled down to a starting point of options—and it has nothing to do with a handicap!

Modern iron sets are designed into player categories that overlap the outdated “what’s your handicap?” model, and at GolfWRX we believe it was important to go beyond handicap and ask specific questions about the most crucial performance elements fitters are looking at.

These are the best iron categories we have developed to help you determine which category is most important for your swing and game.

Best irons of 2024: The categories

  • Overall performance
  • Easiest to launch/Slower swing speed
  • Pure enjoyment
  • Most technology-packed

2024 Best irons: Pure enjoyment

pga tour tennis shoes

We continue to see an overlap in the way fitters in this category define the top irons. The most playable irons are the most likely to be higher launching, and shots that fly higher make the game more enjoyable for everyone. This reiterates our belief that your iron selection should not be defined by your handicap but instead by what gives you the best opportunity to play your best — and most enjoyable — golf.

pga tour tennis shoes

Their story:  Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever,” the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to two more mph of ball speed, per the company. At the heart of the new addition is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation that features seven flex zones that allow more free bending in design to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge aims to contribute to a solid feel and pleasing impact sound.

Fitter comments:

  • “The best G.I. iron on the market. Easy to hit and launch while making great ball speed for distance.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. High launch and packed with forgiveness on those off-center hits. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit. So easy to hit and look at for the average golfer.”
  • “Yeah, I mean, that’s definitely a go-to and in the matrix for sure. I mean, it’s just super easy to hit, super forgiving. They don’t mess that iron up.”
  • “Ping does a great job of building golf clubs. Their design is fantastic and it’s not for everybody, you know, it’s not the lowest-spinning club…but it sure is one of the most forgiving golf clubs and most consistent golf clubs. Ping G430 in that category of club, you can have something that a good player who needs a little help maybe can use because it’s consistent across the face, and you can’t do that with some of the other clubs because they’re not as consistent across the face for the ball speeds. It is a monster for us.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

TaylorMade P790

pga tour tennis shoes

Their story: Engineers utilized the variables of tungsten weighting, SpeedFoam Air, and internal mass — with an assist from AI — to precisely give golfers what they need in each iron. For example, launch and forgiveness in the long irons. More specifically, TaylorMade is using what the company calls FLTD CG (flighted CG) to strategically position CG throughout the set (lower in the long irons, higher in the short irons). CG is positioned almost a millimeter lower in the long irons compared to previous generations. In the shorter irons, the higher CG positions allowed engineers to dial in spin and promote accuracy.

  • “Best combination of everything. The amalgamation of all irons on the market blended into one mathematically perfect design.”
  • “I think people recognize the name. It’s a very popular club. It stands up to every model in a category.”
  • “That’s the staple in the players distance category. It’s year-in, year-out. It’s tough to beat TaylorMade — they don’t go wrong with that iron, for sure. They make little refinements, but it’s almost like, yeah, just keep making little refinements. Don’t kind of mess that up just because the, I mean, it, it fits such a wide range of players and it’s just such a good iron that fits a wide, wide range of handicaps.”
  • “I think where TaylorMade kind of struggled over the past is getting that spin on the golf club, and I think each generation it just keeps getting better. I think they did an awesome job.”
  • “If it’s not our best-selling iron in the fitting center, it’s always like number two. It’s such a great, great performer across the board. And yeah, it just keeps getting better every year. It’s really awesome; crazy distance on that thing too.”

Srixon ZX5 Mk II

pga tour tennis shoes

Their story:  MainFrame v2 was developed with an Automated Intelligence process, flex-maximizing variable thickness pattern of grooves, channels, and cavities carefully milled into the backside of Z ZX5 iron faces for high ball speeds. Not only does MainFrame boost COR, but it also repositions mass away from the face and into the toe and sole for a lower CG for easier launch, more consistency, and forgiveness.

Fitter comments:

  • “I’m a big believer in the V-Sole. For high-speed guys who want a little forgiveness and are steep, it just doesn’t stick in the ground. Super soft and high launching. Not a ton of offset. It’s also been a good fit for moderate-to-high handicappers.”
  • “So I would say it, it kind of stands out in its category because it does launch higher than its competitors. It also sits in between some of the models, like, it doesn’t directly compete with a hollow cavity and it doesn’t compete with, like the Cobra King Tour. Like, it’s a degree stronger. For a forged iron, it performs great for us. The only problem is that it is a little bit light in a swing weight, so we have to be careful of who we fit.”
  • “It’s definitely one of our more popular irons for sure. You know, you get a guy who wants to play something small but still wants something more forgiving, and they don’t want kind of that full hollow body iron. I mean, that’s definitely one of our best sellers for sure. We’re seeing that a lot of combos — that’s a one iron that you can definitely combo with the ZX7 for sure.”
  • “I think a lot of guys like the concept of the V-Sole with them…If you’re talking an overall package, you know, for the guy that is looking for something clean. That’s a spectacular golf club. Good looks and good feel and great, you know, great performance, and it fits a lot of categories.”
  • “I think the one struggle a lot of companies have with that category is getting something to spin, so to try and give like guys so they don’t get those knuckleball shots or that fly out of the rough that goes 20 yards longer. I kind of think that that’s what I think makes that item so good is you get some spin on it, and I think it, it looks and feels good enough that like it, a guy that’s a mid-single digit can play it and be like, yeah, that’s good enough for me. But it’s also forgiving enough that a guy that’s in that kind of 12-to-15 kind of category if he wants to reach a little bit and play something that might look a little bit better. It just fits such a huge, huge range of players. I think it’s just awesome.”

Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal

pga tour tennis shoes

Their story: “With the JPX923 Hot Metal, Mizuno introduces “4355 nickel chromoly,” which is 35 percent stronger than the original Hot Metal material and allows for an eight-percent thinner clubface. Cup face construction works in tandem with a deep center of gravity for high launch with stopping power. Mizuno developed Hot Metal Pro, Hot Metal and Hot Metal HL (High Launch) from 175,000 real golf swings recorded via Mizuno’s Swing DNA system.”

  • “These are great for a player who flips at the ball but also needs some help and forgiveness. The strong lofts help reduce a player’s launch and spin.”
  • “Great forgiveness with the feel that Mizuno is known for.”
  • “Great looking and great feeling irons.”
  • “If I had a player come in, that’s just your, you know, your average golfer. It’s one that is like, “Hey, this is, this is one to try.” This is gonna produce a lot of ball speed and is super forgiving. You can combo it really well. Mizuno does a great job where you can do combo sets just with lofts.”
  • “It’s very good. It’s one of the most popular. Always in the mix of game improvement irons when people come in and they want to hit something that’s forgiving and that also still feels less clicky.”

Titleist T200

pga tour tennis shoes

Their story :  If there were gripes about the previous generation of T200 irons, it was probably because of feel and sound at impact. Titleist heard your feedback on the previous T200 irons, and it listened. The new 2023 T200 irons have a reengineered chassis to create a stiffer structure and create a more stable feeling and muted sound. They also refined the Max Impact Technology within the head to sit closer to the L-face, further solidifying the feel.

  • “Best overall for us. Great looks, workability. Plenty of forgiveness.”
  • “I like the great look of these and they are easy to play for the average golfer.”
  • “That’s a big combo iron for sure, especially, but it’s also, you know, in that player distance category, it’s one of the higher launching ones, and it’s gonna spin a little bit more. I would say some of those irons in that category they launch, you know, they’ve launched a little bit lower and they don’t spin, which it is great for some players, but also some still want to play a smaller package.”
  • “I think it was definitely a big jump from the previous one. Yeah, I mean, one thing I’ve noticed is compared to some of the other irons, even kind of equal loft, it tends to get a little bit more height on it.”
  • “It’s great for one of those guys that if I get in there that’s kind of hitting a little low. It’s one to kind of throw in my hands…you’re seeing that initial launch kind of pick up a little bit compared to some of the other ones.”

Auburn signs 10-year apparel deal with Nike to begin in 2025, ends 18-year partnership with Under Armour

Auburn's relationship with under armour is coming to an end after almost 20 years.

usatsi-21488047-168396417-lowres-1.jpg

Auburn University will be switching to Nike as its apparel and shoe provider once its current deal with Under Armour expires in July 2025, the school announced Tuesday . Auburn's new deal with Nike covers 10 years and is set to make Auburn one of the highest-paid Nike-sponsored programs in the nation, according to 247Sports .

"We are excited to enter this new partnership with Nike, a brand that consistently champions athletes and sport around the world," Auburn athletic director John Cohen said in a statement. "We are appreciative of their strong support throughout this process. We believe that our 10-year agreement, beginning in July 2025, will continue to elevate Auburn and best serve our student-athletes and our university moving forward.

"We are also grateful to Kevin Plank and Under Armour for their 18 years of valued partnership in growing the Auburn brand and serving our student athletes, coaches, and fans. We look forward to the opportunity to celebrate this relationship throughout the final year ahead."

Auburn's partnership with Under Armour began in 2006 following a longtime collaboration with Russel Athletic. The contract was restructured in 2015 and increased in value to $78.1 million

During its partnership with Under Armour, Auburn won a national championship with Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton leading the way, two SEC championships and six bowl games. Auburn's new deal with Nike starts ahead of what will likely be football coach Hugh Freeze's third year with the Tigers. The former Ole Miss and Liberty boss led Auburn to a 6-7 record during his first year on the Plains in 2023.
