Expecting a refund for a canceled cruise? Here's how long it could take

Are you waiting for a refund for a canceled cruise? You're not alone.
Cruise lines have canceled thousands of departures in recent weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak, and they're in the midst of processing full or partial refunds for several million customers.
Cruise giant Carnival alone says it has been working on getting money back to more than 1 million people.
That's an unprecedented number of refunds for the industry to process in a short period, and it isn't always going smoothly. Here at TPG, we've been getting a steady stream of emails from readers about issues surrounding cruise refunds and the "future cruise credits" lines are offering as an alternative.

Some readers are unsure about how the refund process works, and others are describing a lack of communication about refunds from their lines or the travel agencies that sold them their cruise. But, for the most part, the big question they have is simple: When is my refund coming?
The quick answer to the latter question: It depends on the cruise line .
You could wait up to 90 days
Some big cruise operators are processing refunds in just a few weeks. Others are taking up to three months to get money back to customers.
At cruise giant Royal Caribbean and sister line Celebrity Cruises, for instance, the staff that handles refund requests is trying to get them processed in 30 business days (which works out to about 45 days).
At a number of smaller lines such as Crystal Cruises, Silversea and Oceania Cruises, refunds are taking up to 90 days to process. Norwegian Cruise Line says refunds are being processed 90 days after a request is made.

"We are working hard to help our guests," Jonathon Fishman, a spokesperson for the parent company of Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, told TPG. "It takes 30 business days from the cancellation date. It may take a couple of days for the cancellation to take effect."
Spokespeople for a number of cruise lines contacted by TPG said they were trying to process refunds as fast as they could. But they're struggling under a deluge of requests. They're also hampered by stay-at-home orders that have refund processors trying to handle their work from home offices instead of company sites.
Some lines also have laid off a large number of employees in recent weeks or have employees working on reduced hours. Carnival, Princess Cruises and Holland America in recent days have laid off or furloughed nearly 50% of their U.S.-based staff -- several thousand people in all.
At Miami-based Crystal, all employees -- not just refund processors -- have been working at home for weeks due to stay-at-home orders, spokesperson Susan Robison told TPG. They're also dealing with an extraordinary volume of refund requests due to simultaneous cancellations of sailings on all ocean, river and yacht vessels around the world into June.
"It is our intent to issue applicable refunds as quickly as possible," Robison said. "I can tell you that many of our guests are seeing refunds issued faster than our original estimate of up to 90 days."
Individual policies aren't always clear
Some cruise lines are posting the number of days it will take to receive a refund on their websites. Others only will tell you if you ask. But that's if you can get through to them. Many cruise lines report unprecedented call volume and have been asking customers for patience as they work through requests.
TPG contacted major cruise lines catering to North Americans about the topic and was given a wide range of estimates as to how long refunds would take. Most fell into one of four estimated timelines: 30, 45, 60 or 90 days.
A handful of lines did not respond to TPG's request for information.
Carnival, which accounts for nearly 20% of all cruises taken worldwide, only would say it is "committed to issuing refunds as soon as possible."
Carnival has canceled nearly all its cruises through September , with the exception of August sailings on eight of the line's 27 ships that remain on the schedule for now.
The situation "dwarfs any disruption we've experienced in even the worst hurricane season," Carnival said in a statement. "We can confirm that refunds are being issued to those guests that requested one."

Refunds even for people taking credits
Most cruise lines have offered customers on canceled sailings a full cash refund.
As an alternative, cruise lines will give customers on canceled cruises a future cruise credit for the amount they paid, often with a "bonus credit" added to make the credit more enticing .
Cruise lines want you to take the credit. With revenues plummeting , they're eager to preserve as much cash as they can on their balance sheets.
Still, whether you ask for the refund or take the credit, you'll likely be getting at least some money back from your line as a cash payment. Even for those taking the credit, many lines are refunding taxes, fees, port charges and other prepaid items in cash.
Carnival, for instance, has been sending cash refunds for all taxes, fees and port expenses that customers paid for cruises, even when the customer chooses the credit option. The result is that every one of the more than 1 million Carnival customers who had a cruise canceled are receiving some sort of refund that needs to be processed.

It's a task so daunting, Carnival has pulled in management to help.
"Our customer service team has been approved for overtime, and we have trained other management employees to help as well," the line said in its statement to TPG.

Frustration from some cruisers
The good news for those who are worried about their refunds is that refunds are happening. TPG has heard from readers on a number of canceled sailings who already have received their money back.
Still, TPG also has heard from readers who report trouble getting a confirmation that their request for a refund has been registered or is coming. Often, these complaints come from readers who booked through discount online travel agencies.
TPG also has heard from readers who booked with cruise companies that are not offering refunds for canceled trips. A handful of small companies that mostly operate river cruises, including Grand Circle Cruise Line and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, only will give passengers on canceled sailings a voucher for a future cruise -- at least initially. Scenic says passengers can get a refund, but only after the voucher expires in 2023.
In at least one case, a cruise-selling company initially offered customers on a canceled cruise a refund and then didn't follow through on the offer.
TPG reader Kim Johnson, 64, of Tucson, Arizona, said Grand Circle initially offered her and a group of her friends a refund for a canceled Holland and Belgium river cruise. But two weeks later, Grand Circle pulled back the offer, she said.
"Grand Circle emailed us saying that we had been rebooked on the same cruise next year, with no mention of the refund," Johnson told TPG. "We had a new reservation number and were supposed to go online to accept the terms and conditions."

Johnson said calls to the company "resulted in us being told that refunds were no longer an option." Johnson said her group doesn't want to switch their cruise to next year. They just want their money back.
Johnson was one of several members of her group who reached out to TPG and provided documentation of the initial offer of a refund from Grand Circle.
Asked about the group's complaint, a spokesperson for Grand Circle did not address the issue of the withdrawn offer of a refund but said the company was "committed to delivering the excellent travel experiences for which [they have] become known" over six decades in business.
"As soon as it is safe to do so, we will resume our regular departure schedule," spokesperson Ann Shannon said in an email to TPG. "In the meantime, in an effort to ensure that our travelers will be able to enjoy their planned trips, Grand Circle has rebooked their reservations for future available departure dates in 2021 and implemented generous policies providing additional savings."
While Grand Circle has rebooked passengers on canceled sailings for next year, passengers will be able to change the dates that the company has chosen for them, Shannon added.
Soon after TPG contacted Grand Circle, one member of Johnson's group, Barbara Ballard, 64, of Tucson, unexpectedly received the refund she had been seeking from Grand Circle. The refund came with no explanation, but TPG had mentioned Ballard's case specifically when inquiring about Grand Circle's policy. Johnson did not receive a refund at that time. But within 24 hours of this story originally posting, she said the company called to promise her entire group a full refund.

Azamara: 45 days
Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival has not issued an estimate for customers as to how long refunds will take to process.
Celebrity Cruises: 30 business days

New Rules Require Full Refunds For Canceled or Delayed Cruise Trips

There is good news for anyone planning on taking a cruise this summer: New rules are now in place that entitle cruise customers to a full, cash refund if an operator delays or cancels a trip.
The new rules come after hundreds of cruise customers nationwide were left stranded during the COVID-19 pandemic when operators canceled or prolonged planned voyages.

The Federal Maritime Commission – the agency tasked with regulating U.S.-based sea travel across the globe – believes the rules put in place better protections for consumers seeking cash refunds, as opposed to future voyage credits issued by the operator.
FMC Commissioner Louis Sola told NBC 5 Responds the rules are a major win.
“It's the first time that the law has been changed since 1881, since the California gold rush,” Sola said, referring to the Passenger Vessel Act. “People can be confident moving forward.”
Turbulent Traveling
Cruise customers were rocked in 2020, and not by the high seas. As the pandemic spread, and "No Sail Orders" were issued, cruise operators began to delay expeditions, and in most cases, cancel them altogether.
Many of those cruise operators were quick to issue customers cruise credits towards a future trip.
Getting a cash refund on the other hand, was a hard sell.
NBC 5 Responds heard from many frustrated passengers who failed to get refunds on their own.
“They were offering 100% cruise credit,” said cruise customer Joshua Smith. “We were extremely frustrated.”
An untold number of customers across the U.S. found themselves in the same boat. So many in fact, calls were pouring into the Federal Maritime Commission’s Washington D.C. offices.
“I was stuck here in Washington, I couldn't go home. So I would work the phones,” said Sola.
That’s when the FMC came to a realization that with the variety of companies operating cruise voyages, so came a variety of refund policies.
“As far as consumer protection goes, what we found is that almost every single cruise line had a different refund policy.” Sola said.
The FMC launched a fact-finding investigation into whether stricter rules on cruise line refund policies were needed. The answer: a resounding yes.
Now, as of April 18, these new rules are in effect. The new rules go into effect just in time for the summer traveling season, as the CDC recently lifted its risk advisory for cruise ship travel after two years of COVID warnings.
Representatives of the cruise industry did not respond to NBC 5 Responds’ request for comment on the new rules. Sola believes the new rules will make a major difference.
“After a two-year rulemaking process, we've finally got across that hurdle,” Sola told NBC 5 Responds. “It takes a long time for government to move the ship, so to speak.”
New Cruise Refund Rules
The new FMC rules include the following:
- Defining “non-performance” as a cruise canceling or delaying a voyage by three or more calendar days.
- In the event of a cruise operator’s “non-performance”, passengers are entitled to a refund of all money down, including ancillary fees
- Cruise lines are now required to publish clear instructions for obtaining refunds on their websites
These new rules are not retroactive, and will apply for any cruises scheduled after April 18, 2022.

Bad Customer Service with Planet Cruise
Booked our holiday with Planet Cruises, the Agent was very chatty. At the time of booking our holiday we asked for a room with a sea view. When getting our booking details there was no sea view room booked. I complained and complained for weeks. The recording was checked of our conversations with the Agent who hadn’t listened to me and booked a partial sea view room. We were given some compensation for her incompetence. I contacted you again as my husband has a disability which I bought to your attention last year in November 23. I contacted the hotel myself as I was not getting no satisfaction from customer services to request a ground floor room and then I informed you , but yet again I wasn’t listened to by your customer service. Then I then received an email from you on 14th March just 4 weeks before our holiday stating that there are 120 steps to the hotel and rooms as the hotel is built on a hill. This was never mentioned by the agent when booking this holiday, it should have been mentioned whether you have disabilities or NOT. When I sent an email in November last year asking for special assistance, then I should been informed about the steps, but this was never mentioned regarding the many steps. I would have certainly lost my deposit and not paid the final amount if somebody had informed me earlier. I feel that this holiday is becoming a nightmare from HELL.

Still waiting for OVERPAYMENT REFUND.
Having rebooked a cancelled cruise through Planet Cruise on 12/11/2020 we are still waiting for a refund of £612 which a result of an OVERPAYMENT !! refund due as the cabin rebooked was of a lower price. The rebooked cruise is with the same cruise line. It is now 165 days and counting. Despite several phone calls and emails which tell me my refund is being dealt with still waiting. Had know this would happen I would have gone for full refund Planet cruise have has OUR money since 2/9/2019 when we paid in full for cancelled original cruise. Do not use this company.

Still waiting for cancelled cruise refund after 135 days! What is particularly appalling is IGLU/Planet Cruise's refusal to commit to a refund date. This company must be acting in breach of it's travel agency licence - if not, there is a clear case for stronger regulation of such intermediaries given that they are handling significant amounts of customer funds.

I want my money back. Its been 9 months.
On April 1st 2020 I paid £466 deposit for a Dubai holiday with Planet Cruise. The holiday was cancelled. To date, 5th January 2021 I have not been refunded. I have written many, many emails, given my details for the refund, been told my claim has been escalated but still no refund. As an older person I should not have this kind of worry in my life. I would like to say that this holiday was not cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. The P and O ship was sold. Selling a ship is not something that happens overnight and I imagine that when the holiday was booked the plan to sell was already in the pipeline,- just nobody told me. Let this be a warning to anybody thinking of booking a cruise with Planet Cruise in these uncertain times. I am now going to take this further. I feel that I have been very badly treated.

Worse if all, we have another cruise booked with you next April and still paying each month faithfully! Never ever will I cruise with you/iglu again. So I get an email from trust pilot asking if I will share additional information with Planet cruise, booking ref etc. Immediately provided by me. They send a generic email not even to my email address, but to my husbands who has had zero contact with them whatsoever... Why to him when I am lead passenger and the onky email correspondence in our records? Yes I know why to avoid.... Email is apologising, blaming the pandemic, unable to confirm when I will get our refund but we are priority, blah blah bulls**t. I immediately reply as my husband forwarded the email to me. I made our views abundantly clear and will do everything within my peer now to ensure this company are fully exposed. Never ever will I book another cruise with this abysmal company. Anyone associated with this scandalous behaviour are as bad. 179 days still nothing!!!

175 DAYS AND STILL WAITING
My Aunt and Uncle were due to cruise with P&O in March 2020. Their cruise which was booked through Planet (owned by Iglu) was cancelled on March 11th 2020. Still no refund after 175 days. Today I have signed the Which petition and enlisted the help of their MP to try to get their refund processed. DO NOT BOOK A HOLIDAY THROUGH IGLU.

Do not give this company your money
Do not give this company your hard earned money! Princess Cruise confirm that planet cruise never made the payment for our cruise that we paid for in March! So they have sat on our money since that date. Our cruise was cancelled about 6 weeks later and here we are 153 days on and Planet Cruise still have our £10K! Promised we’d have it in 90 days then 120 days, now I don’t even get a reply from. Absolute shower of a company

Absolutely shocking level of service
Planet Cruise should be avoided at all costs as we have had a terrible experience and we have not even left home for our cruise! It all started with the cancellation of our Easy Jet flight and has went down hill from there. We only found out about the cancellation when trying to check in, not sure when Planet Cruise would have told us. Emirates flight not released until we pushed them. Eventually had to contact MSC Cruises to ask them to send our cruise tickets to Planet Cruise as they had not requested them. This was less than 10 days before we depart. Had to rearrange the trains ourselves and the list goes on. When you do get through to customer services [ waiting time easily more than 40 mins] the people do not appear to really understand what they are doing. They will say people are sick or are trainees with minimal support. I requested to speak to Management however you have to wait up to 48 hours to get a call back. 60 hours have past and still waiting... We have paid Planet Cruise in excess of 16,000 pounds for a terrible service. Beware! PS If you press option 1 on their phone line for sales it is answered in approx. 3 minutes!

Shocking Customer Service
We have not even gone on the cruise yet and I am dreading the whole experience. The customer service is non existent and for the last 3 days I have spent 7 hours on the phone to sort my cruise out. This cruise is one that was cancelled last year due to Covid. We transferred it and expected it to be fine. All paperwork has been sent for last years cruise nothing has been changed i.e. name of ship, cruise date etc. On receiving our tickets and and guest booklet on 9th July I find two balcony cabins that were booked next to each and confirmed on 22nd January 2022 are now 2 decks apart. I have spoken to Planet/Iglu who say that it is Royal Caribbean and that they have had difficulty contacting Royal Caribbean for a response. I have called Royal Caribbean myself tonight to be told Planet need to make the changes as was advised Sunday 10th July. They are unable to make any changes. Where do I go next?????? Planet even told me as a goodwill gesture Royal Caribbean was offering me $100 good will. I have told them I don't want the goodwill I want two cabins next to each other as booked. It is a first cruise for my daughter and family and as my grandson is disabled we wanted to be next to them. No one is helping resolve this. I will not be cruising with RC again and not booking any future getaways with Planet/Iglu. Feeling nervous about the whole situation.

Thieves! Still not got back my money from a cruise cancelled in May. 167 days £3200, fobbed off god knows how many times with excuses. If you want to lose money go ahead and book. Check out the FACEBOOK IGLU REFUND ACTION GROUP FOR PROOF.

I often tune into the Planet Cruise programme on Ideal World on a regular basis and came across the perfect holiday in 2019 sailing on one of the NCL ships to Canada and America in 2020. I was so excited by this trip that I paid a deposit of £450 straightaway to secure it. But unfortunately before I could pay off the rest of it, the pandemic happened and it was cancelled, however I was given the option of transferring it to 2021, which I was more than happy to do! In June this year I received an e-mail to say that yet again the cruise had been cancelled, which was really disappointing, but on this occasion I decided to ask for a refund! In order to get the refund, I had to progress chase on a couple of occasions. I eventually received my refund but minus £50.00. When I asked over a period of 2 months why I was only refunded £400.00, no one could give me an answer as to why they had kept back £50.00. To cut a long story short, at the time of writing this review, they still have not refunded me the full amount, and each time I called them to try and sort it out, I was basically fobbed off. Therefore as far as I am concern they have effectively, STOLEN MY MONEY! Thank goodness I had not paid the full amount at the time for £3,600. All I can say is don’t book with Norwegian Cruise Liner, Planet Cruise, or Igloo whatever they call themselves, as between them they are a total rip off! Just think depending on how many passengers were booked on that ship, if they kept £50.00 back from each passenger, then they have made a lot of money without the ship sailing anywhere! So somebody somewhere is gathering a lot of interests on all our money! These brands as far as I am concern have definitely been damaged, and I would strongly suggest that Ideal World severs their partnership with Planet Cruise as it will also be responsible for damaging their brand, because judging by other reviews no-one trusts Planet Cruise anymore!!!

What is a Blues Cruise Reservation username & password? Each Blues Cruise guest creates a unique username and password that will allow you to book a cabin. If you have previously traveled on a Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise, your username and password will remain the same. If you do not remember your user name and password, you can reset them via this link .
Logging in with your user name and password will allow you to prebook and waitlist upcoming cruises, update personal and credit card information, make payments and use your specific token ID to select your stateroom.
How do I create my username and password? If you have sailed or been on a waitlist, simply follow these instructions:
- Go to the following link: LRBC Reservation System
- Click: “Forgot you User Name or Password?”
- Input your Email Address, legal first name and legal last name (your email, first and last name must match what is in our reservation system)
This will generate a one-time use “verification code” that can either be copy and pasted – OR – you may click the “ continue” button directly from the email. This will re-direct you back to the website to create your user name and password.

Where can I book my cabin? You can place a reservation by logging into your Blues Cruise account OR by clicking the “BOOK NOW” button on the specific event’s page on our website. In order to reserve a stateroom, you will need to have your specific log-in information and also your unique token which will be assigned and emailed to you shortly before your booking date.
How do I make a payment? You can make a payment anytime either by:

What type of payments are accepted? LRBC accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. Does Blues Cruise automatically charge my credit card on the payment due dates? LRBC does NOT automatically charge your credit card on file unless you specify that you would like us to. It is each guest’s responsibility to make the scheduled payments on time. We do reserve the right to cancel reservations who are not paid by the final payment dates.
<b>What are your cancellation penalties? Prebook deposits are completely refundable until the date that you select your specific stateroom. Once inventory is held, applicable penalties apply. What is a Booking Token? A booking “token” is simply the unique code that you will use to access the reservation system and select your specific stateroom on your assigned date. The token will go live at a specific date and time based on the priority of your pre-book that will allow you to access the reservation system and choose any of the available inventory. Only one cabin can be booked per token and tokens are non-transferable.
Your token I.D. may become invalid if attempted to be used prior to when it is set to be activated. Once token is deactivated, your only option to book your stateroom will be over the phone on your date and time which will drastically effect your available cabin options.
What if the stateroom I want isn’t available? Once you have selected your stateroom, you can always waitlist for an alternate stateroom or location. Just give us a call or send us an email to let us know your 1 st choice of stateroom. Please be as specific as possible in your request.
What if I didn’t prebook? When can I place my reservation? If you did not place a prebook deposit, you will be unable to place a cabin reservation. Once prebooked passengers have selected their staterooms any remaining inventory will go to a general on-sale at a TBA date and time. If the cruise sells out through prebooked passengers, we will go straight into a waitlist. Exact details for the specific date and time that a waitlist will be available or any remaining cabins will become available, will be announced in a mass email to our general email list. Are there discounts available? We do offer an early payment discount. If your account is paid in full by the date specified in your reservation confirmation, you will be eligible for a $100 per person discount. We do also offer a consecutive cruise Mojo Boogie discount of $150 per person. Mojo Boogie discounts are available to those who travel back to back cruises (not Oct to Oct, etc).

Having rebooked a cancelled cruise through Planet Cruise on 12/11/2020 we are still waiting for a refund of £612 which a result of an OVERPAYMENT !! refund due as the cabin rebooked was of a lower price. The rebooked cruise is with the same cruise line. It is now 165 days and counting.

Deposits are usually required within 60-90 days of departure, but cancelling and rebooking may result in a lower fare. Calling the Cruise Line. Polite calls to the cruise line can sometimes result in refunds, even if it's past the 48-hour mark. Being polite and understanding can increase the chances of a refund.
Also when will we be refunded for our extra costs. Not alone compensated for this appalling experience for all the persons involved. So far we were offered €699-12, refund. This was the cost of the original flights. Which were cancelled ( Don't know why) & a £50 voucher towards booking another cruise with planet cruise.
