Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? We're here to help.

Our crew get asked dozens of questions every day, some quirky some quite intelligent, some just plain entertaining. But as they say, there is no such thing as a dumb question so don’t be too scared to ask.

Do I need to check in on the day?

Do you have hotel transfers.

We have a fleet of modern air-conditioned coaches that offer a coach service from Cairns city hotels for just $27 per adult and $17 per child, for the return transfer. If you are staying at one of the Northern Beaches (from north of the Airport to Ellis Beach) we also can pick you up from there too. Beach transfers are $38 per adult and $25 per child return. Please contact us if wanting to add a coach transfer to your booking.

Can I take a pram on board?

All our vessels are pram friendly. The beach areas are not practical for prams however there are boardwalks and pathways throughout the island that are suitable. Prams can be stored on ‘Big Cat’ if needed.

Is this tour wheelchair friendly?

Passengers must have some mobility and/or the presence of a carer who can assist them. Depending on tides it may be necessary to embark/disembark from different levels on the boat. Coral viewing and glass bottom boat activities are subject to the weather and the extent of the passenger’s mobility and/or the presence of a carer who can assist. Please note that the toilets on the vessel are not wheelchair accessible but there are disabled toilets available on the island. Please advise at time of booking if you have wheelchair bound passengers travelling. These guidelines apply to standard wheelchairs only. We are not able to accommodate electric wheelchairs on any of the vessels or coaches.

What do I need to bring with me?

We recommend you bring a towel, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and swimwear. Also, cash for drinks, snacks or souvenirs you may want to buy. Credit cards are accepted at most shops at the Island however surcharges may apply.

Can I change my date of travel or cancel once booked?

Yes, you can cancel or amend your tour to a different date (subject to availability) if you notify us 24 hours or more prior to travel. If you need to cancel or change dates within 24 hours of travel a 100% cancellation fee applies Please note a ‘no show’ (where passengers do not turn up to the specified pick-up point or departure point without notification) automatically incurs a 100% cancellation fee.

Is the Green Island tour recommended for children?

Our cruises are suitable for people of all ages, including families with young children. Our half day option is ideal for small children, infants and babies. Additionally snorkelling directly from the beach is perfect for children and first time snorkelers.

Is lunch included?

No. However you can purchase our delicious buffet lunch option in the cart when booking.

Adult: $30 pp, Child (under 14yr): $16 pp.

Please contact us if you have any special dietary requirements

“ Definitely a must do when visiting North Queensland. The staff were excellent - all very experienced and informative. We were taken to 3 areas of Opal Reef. The staff were extremely tentative...added BONUS of a professional photographer onboard, who photographed us underwater! Monique via Tripadvisor
“ This 1/2 day snorkelling trip from Port Douglas could not have been better! During the 4-hour tour we learnt about the Low Isles, their creation, evolution and history. We went for a 45 minute snorkel when the instructor was able to show us a turtle! Wet suits and snorkel gear were all provided, pre-sanitized. Fellow Traveller via Tripadvisor

What our Guests Say

This was such an amazing trip on the great barrier reef for us as a family. Both my 4 and 10 year old boys absolutely loved it 😍We will never forget this experience and hope other families out there will get to one day be as lucky as we were and get to snorkel in the great barrier reef for the day.

Mia Hoff – Google Business Review

The whole experience was great. We were lucky with the weather, which helped. The facilities all dealt with the number of customers well so there was plenty of room on the catamaran there and back as well as virtually no waiting for the glass bottom boat and mini sub. The reef views were quite spectacular. Overall the trip was excellent and good value.

Frank R – Tripadvisor

My husband and I had an awesome time on the Sunlover Reef Cruise. Staff were super helpful and the activities and equipment that we were provided with exceeded our expectations. We got to spend such a decent amount of time out snorkeling on the reef and had lots of freedom and choice to enjoy our day how we wanted too. Was great fun!

The best Great Barrier Reef tours in Far North Queensland

Imogen Eveson

16 February 2023

Time

Whether you’re up for snorkelling, diving or perhaps witnessing a mass coral spawning event, these Far North Queensland tours of the Great Barrier Reef will put you at the heart of the action in sustainable style.

Tours from port douglas, quicksilver.

Spend a day onboard Quicksilver ’s wave-piercing catamaran to dive or snorkel the underwater wonderland of the Agincourt ribbon reef. Prefer to stay dry? With Quicksilver’s underwater observatory and semi-submersible coral reef viewing tour – during which you’ll experience a diver’s view of the reef in air-conditioned comfort – you can do just that without missing a beat. For an extra-exhilarating day out, climb aboard Quicksilver’s Silversonic for five hours on the reef across three different environments; if you’re in Cairns, you can hop on the super-speedy Silverswift .

Quicksilver

Quicksilver’s wave-piercing catamaran.

Snorkelling specialist Wavelength offers a leisurely day on the outer reef with small groups (maximum 34 people) and a high level of interpretation: its experienced marine biologists provide guided snorkel tours and reef talks for a genuine debrief on the Great Barrier Reef and the environmental threat it faces.

Wavelength great barrier reef

Experienced marine biologists tour through engangered coral.

Leading eco-tourism operator Sailaway also offers snorkelling tours with marine biologists on hand as well as relaxing sailing tours, which – running mostly on wind power – offer the most sustainable way to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Plus $20 from every ticket sold goes towards local sustainable reforestation and carbon-offsetting. Enjoy exclusive access to dreamy Mackay and Undine cays, with their vast areas of coral gardens perfect for snorkelling and witnessing giant clams, turtles and fish life up close.

Sailaway

Sailaway is a leading eco-tourism operator.

Calypso Reef Cruises

A great pick for families, Calypso Reef Cruises offers a range of trips to the Great Barrier Reef suitable for all ages. Choose to snorkel, scuba dive (children over 12 only) or spend a half-day cruising to the picturesque Low Isles – just 15 kilometres off the coast from of Port Douglas, and made up of two small coral cay islands surrounded by 22 hectares of reef – where you can snorkel or view the reef from a glass-bottom boat.

Calypso Reef Cruises

Calypso Reef Cruises are suitable for all ages.

Tours from Cairns

Divers Den offers a range of Great Barrier Reef tours to snorkellers, first-time divers and certified divers, but for something truly different mark your calendar for just after the full moon in spring or early summer. Divers Den offers the unique chance to witness the Great Barrier Reef’s annual mass coral spawning (which, by the way, has been described as the biggest sexual event on the planet).

These special night trips departing from Cairns get divers and snorkellers up close as all the corals on the reef reproduce at once. It’s a dazzling and otherworldly display that looks like millions of champagne bubbles forming a massive pink slick on the ocean’s surface, and unlike anything you’ll experience anywhere else.

Divers Den

Divers Den grants witness to the Great Barrier Reef’s annual mass coral spawning.

Passions of Paradise

With its small-group tours aboard a 25-metre sailing catamaran and a passion for reef education and protection at its core, Passions of Paradise is at the forefront of sustainable reef tourism. Journey from Cairns to unique outer reef locations to dive and snorkel with turtles, colourful fish and see a variety of corals. Opt for a full-day tour, with its chance to meet with an eco-accredited marine naturalist onboard, a family tour or an eco tour, designed for environmentally minded certified divers who want to take part in citizen science and contribute to ongoing reef conservation projects.

Passions of Paradise

All aboard the 25-metre sailing catamaran.

Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel

You’ll see three flags flying above the Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel vessel: Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait, which reflect the heritage mix of its Indigenous ranger staff. This is the first Great Barrier Reef snorkel and dive experience to combine Indigenous cultural interpretation, delivering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the largest living structure on Earth.

You’ll visit Milln, Flynn and Thetford reefs in Gunggandji Sea Country and throughout the day receive an Indigenous welcome and acknowledgment, learn about the Great Barrier Reef creation story, taste bush foods and tuck into a native-ingredient laced lunch spread.

Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel day tour.

Join local Indigenous sea rangers on a Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel day tour.

Tours to the islands

Board the Wavedancer , Quicksilver Cruises’ 30-metre luxury sailing catamaran, and sail for an hour from Port Douglas to an unspoiled tropical paradise called the Low Isles. Spend the day alternating between the shade of a palm-thatched umbrella on silky white sand and swimming and snorkelling around coral gardens, home to clownfish and turtles and more, in this clear and calm Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

Michaelmas Cay

Combine boat and beach time on a chilled day out from Cairns with Ocean Spirit Cruises . A two-hour motorised sail onboard a 32-metre sailing catamaran will land you at Michaelmas Cay, a small sand cay encircled by a spectacular fringing reef.

It’s also a protected sanctuary for migratory seabirds. Once here, opt for a snorkel in the cay’s shallow waters, try an introductory scuba dive, cruise the semi-submarine for a diver’s perspective on the reef, watch a fish-feeding presentation, observe the bird life or simply relax in your own little slice of paradise. This is both an eco- and family-friendly option.

Michaelmas Cay.

Land at Michaelmas Cay.

Green Island

For a day out on a rainforest-clad coral cay, head for Green Island National Park. Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises whisks you there from Cairns to snorkel, dive and swim in its bath-like warm waters; to see the reef from a semi-submarine or a glass-bottom boat; or to spend time exploring the island, which holds traditional and contemporary cultural significance for the Guru-Gulu Gungandji people. While here, you can also take the opportunity to visit the unique Marineland, a crocodile sanctuary, aquarium and Melanesian museum combined.

Green Island National Park.

Head for Green Island National Park.

Frankland Islands

Start the day with a rainforest river cruise before a quick skip – the shortest open water crossing of any day tour from Cairns – to Normanby Island in Frankland Islands National Park , which places you right on the Great Barrier Reef with its vibrant fringing reefs teeming with all manner of marine life including turtles, octopuses and anemone clownfish, aka Nemos. Explore this natural paradise above and below water over four hours, with only 50 people permitted to visit these pristine, uninhabited islands per day.

Fitzroy Island

Ideally located between Cairns and the outer Great Barrier Reef, a stay at Fitzroy Island Resort rewards with serious reef proximity. While here, you can enjoy a day out on Moore Reef Pontoon with Sunlover Reef Cruises . Spend four hours reef-side with inclusions such as snorkelling, glass-bottom boat rides, an underwater observatory and a marine life touch tank, topped off by a tropical buffet lunch.

Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island showing off.

Lizard Island

With its vibrant marine life and reef just steps off the beach, exclusive hideaway Lizard Island provides some of the best snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. Join a reef tour onboard a luxury yacht – if you can manage to peel yourself away from the sybaritic temptations of the world-class resort – to explore world-famous dive sites such as the Cod Hole, only 45 minutes from shore.

Or join a guided snorkel tour around the island, which take you through the Clam Gardens – complete with countless species of clams – and have you snorkelling with the island’s resident green turtles.  Or, for the ultimate Great Barrier Reef excursion, Lizard Island can tee you up with your own private charter.

Who are our guests

What our guests say about their experience, simply the best reef/dive experience for a family with teens.

We just returned from an overnight trip and would turnaround and do it again! We loved everything!!! We are a group of four beginner divers (two adults and two teenagers) and we could not have had a better experience - the captain and dive instructor were knowledgeable, helpful and great company! The equipment is really well looked after and the boat is comfortable. We saw truly amazing things, learned something that we hadn’t tried before and even managed a night dive. Indescribably good. Do yourself a favour - explore the reef with these guys. It was amazing.

Fantastic, relaxed experience for certified and non-certified divers

What an awesome trip, highly recommended! My family of 2 adults and 3 teens, just got back from a two day diving trip on Coral Sea Dreaming. The crew was fantastic, super chill, but very professional. Having only 12 passengers with 3 crew made for a relaxed vibe. The food was great and the diving/snorkeling was sensational (don’t skip the epic night dive!). Both the certified and non-certified divers had an awesome time. I definitely recommend booking Coral Sea Dreaming for your trip to the Reef.

First attempt to dive

This is a fantastic cruise, the crew are fantastic. Their encouragement and enthusiasm is wonderful. All of the crew constantly checking your safety whilst diving and snorkelling. Highly recommended.

Great experience!

AMAZING, the crew were so friendly, polite and attentive, the boat was SO COOL and the dives were just fantastic. The divemaster was very experienced and took us to some great sites. And I loved that hot meal after a day of sailing of diving. Thank you!!

Great experience!!!

We could not recommend it more! Whole crew and instructors went out their way to make our trip comfortable, safe and fun! With very few divers on board we have had Milln reef only for ourselves! And what a amazing reef that is 🥰🥰🥰

Incredible 10 out of 10... The best way to see the Reef

Had an amazing time with the Coral Sea dreaming crew, totally exceeded all expectations, wouldn't want to explore the reef in any other way. Would give them 10 stars if I could, I'll be recommending them to everyone I know and would love to do it again if ever in Cairns again. Cheers guys and thanks for the unforgettable trip!!

Could not have been happier with our day. Great guides, easy down river trip and across to the island with stunning views. The island itself was beautiful and incredibly isolated, it was a small personal tour that was highly enjoyable. You should definitely do the guided snorkel tour if you do the day trip

Perfection! Having the option of semi sub tour, sup, snorkelling on your own, snorkel safari in group, island tour, beautiful lunch and an ideallic island setting is superb for a family wanting to explore Great Barrier reef and not be stuck on a boat the whole day. Swimming above coral, colourful marine life, fish and swam with turtles! Would love to go again! Thank you crew we have wonderful memories.

It was am amazing experience! I got picked up by a coach in the morning, the coach was well ventilated, drove for about an hour in that until we hour to the ferry. The boat trip was about an hour long too where I saw beautiful sights of nature! They provided free drinks and snacks both ways in the ferry and lunch was also included in the island! They can provide something for every dietary requirement, including vegan.

What a hidden gem this tour was. Beautiful island, river cruise and great reef. Nice small group. Had the island to ourselves. Knowledgeable, friendly crew. Fabulous value. Will definitely be recommending this trip.

Highlight of the holiday!! Can’t recommend enough: we were picked up outside our hotel in the morning, drove to the boat where we had a great trip down the Mulgrave river before another 30 min on the sea and we arrived at the island. Variety of activities available from free snorkelling in a watched boundary and a snorkel tour a bit further out, to a semi-submersible and rainforest island tour where you can see in rock pools. The semi-sub was a little murky so if you enjoyed the snorkelling tour, I’d carry on on your own, as it’s what you saw before, but less clear, but if you’re not comfortable snorkeling, then it’s a great alternative to see the corals.

Excellent day tour to a great little island. Crew were wonderful and provided an overall fabulous experience. Suitable for most all ages/abilities and can do as much or as little as you like. Highly recommend.

Very well organized. Staff was amazing!! Something for everyone. You had your choice of snorkeling, glass bottom boat, kayaks, sup, guided nature walk ( totally amazing and interesting!) and there was even a treasure hunt for young kids. Food and snacks were great as well! Highly recommend!

Had a great day out on Frankland Island Reef Cruises. You can do as much or as little as you want on the island so perfect if you want to snorkel and spend lots of time in the water or just sit on the beach in the sun listening to the birds. The boat trip over is pretty short so good if boat travel isn’t your thing. Semi-sub trip is great if you are not a confident swimmer or fan of snorkeling. The information is interesting and while not crystal clear its a good reminder the reef can survive & flourish but we can do lots to help in our everyday life. Loads of food for lunch and afternoon cheese & biscuits was a great way to finish off the day. Highly recommend this trip

We can throughly recommend this small, relaxed all-inclusive reef tour. The crew were amazing, the snorkel safari the best we’ve ever been on in clear, calm waters seeing beautiful corals, fish and turtles close up. Semi sub tour of the island, guided walk, use of paddle boards and kayaks and amazing food all included. A really great day out. Thanks to all the crew. You worked so hard all day and were fun, helpful, friendly and very informative. Thank you

What an amazing day out in frankland Island. Would highly recommended this trip – one of the best snorkelling I’ve done and its guided. if your not the best swimmer you can just walk straight into the crystal clear water and still see lots of amazing stuff. The submarine was brilliant, got to see loads. The island walk was very educational and saw some very unique things. Great staff, great food. Overall amazing day out would highly recommend 🙂

The crew is excellent. Our skipper, Paul, was friendly and knowledgeable. Jan the scuba man was extremely thorough and professional. Kaitlin, our snorkel guide, was positive and full of environmental science knowledge. A simple but nourishing lunch was provided, as well as a nice glass of chilled white wine on the return trip, as well as an afternoon snack of crackers, cheese and fruit. What a delightful and unforgettable day this was!

Fantastic day on the reef! The group was small (only 15 or so people on the day we went) and that made for such a better experience. The locations on the reef that we visited were great and had a fantastic variety of reef life. The crew were fabulous to deal with, the staff explained all safety matters clearly, ran tours to show us around the reef hut also allowed us to self explore. 10/10 day would highly recommend!

a close up of a logo

The crew did a great job of trying to pep us up and gave us very helpful and informative briefings on our way out to the reef. On arrival, I was very grateful to have the option to swim with a pool noodle and stay with a guide/hang onto the life ring until I was comfortable enough to venture off on my own with some confidence. We were lucky to have very clear conditions in the water and many amazing creatures to see. Thank you to the crew for a wonderful day on the reef!

Reef Daytripper is a fantastic day out on a catamaran, with very friendly and professional staff. They look after all of their guests in the water while you snorkel or scuba dive. Very relaxing cruise to and from the reef. Lying on the nets while cruising is an experience. They only take a small group out, so it's much more enjoyable than the bigger boats that go out to the reefs. This is definitely a 5 star experience. A must do when in Cairns!

The reef day tripper is a very well priced trip and extremely professional crew. The day was amazing from the first step on the gorgeous boat till the step off. Happy with how nice and friendly the knowledgeable staff were. They were very experienced and had a great love for the reef. Food and snacks supplied and was great after a big day snorkeling. Complimentary wine and quality gear with the option to dive. Best spots on the reef and great crew. We loved it!

Staff were incredibly friendly and professional. All wet suits and pool noodles provided. Their knowledge was great and the boat itself beautiful. We saw some amazing sea life including turtles, stingrays, clown fish and lots of coral. The food was delicious! Loads of snorkeling time, food at different portions of the day and a glass of wine to finish the tour. Having less than 20 passengers was great, plenty of room to snorkel and lots of time to ask the crew questions.

About Green Island Cairns

Green Island Cairns

Green Island is a beautiful 6000 year old coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, just 27km offshore from Cairns, and one of the most popular destinations on the Great Barrier Reef for visitors coming to Far North Queensland.

A ferry trip to Green Island only takes 45 minutes, it makes for a great day out or convenient half day experience.

Green Island History

Green Island History

Green Island is a 12 hectare coral cay that is over 6000 years old. A coral cay is a sandy island formed on the surface of the coral reef over thousands of years.

The Island was the result of the ocean currents build-up of sand and coral rubble deposited on the calm side of the platform reef, and is now the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef that is covered in rainforest!

Green Island became a national park in 1937, a marine park in 1974 and protected as part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area in 1981. The Great Barrier Reef has over 400 types of corals and 1,500 species of fish. It is common for visitors to Green Island to swim only metres away from Green and Hawksbill turtles just off the beach, which are endangered species. The island also has a wide diversity of bird and insect life which live inside the tropical vine forest that covers the island.

The Aboriginal people, the Gungandi people know the island as Wunyami. They still maintain a close connection to the island and reef which were used as an initiation ground for young men in the past.

Enjoyed the ride to & from Green Island. The glass bottom boat guide was excellent. Unfortunately, tide was too low for swimming so stuck to pool. Overall, according to expectations.
Great staff with a good boat and great lunch and location was perfect

Daren Bartholomaeus

The only issue was the birds and the mess they left, not that its anyones fault but it was the only thing that let the island down, I thought anyway.

We had a fabulous day on our Travstar trip to Green Island. The boat trip, glass bottom boat, snorkeling, rainforest walk, everything was just wonderful. Enjoyed by grandkid, grandma & parents alike. Highly recommended.

Green Island’s wide paved or timber pathways are easy for wheelchairs to access, as is the jetty – perfect for some turtle spotting. There is a boardwalk through the rainforest into the centre of the Island to explore the flora and birdlife. The sandy beach for access to the water is not accessible by wheelchair. The glass bottom boat is only accessible via a number of steps.

The day visitor area has disabled toilet facilities and easy access to the food outlets.

At our Cairns jetty and Green Island, Great Adventures catamarans have boarding ramp gangways able to accommodate standard sized wheelchairs, however larger motorised wheelchairs may not be suitable. Depending on tidal conditions, at times there may be a few steps at the end of the gangway onto the jetty. We recommend contacting our reservations staff 24 hours prior to travel to ensure the most appropriate departure times regarding tide.

Green Island Resort has an Island Suite configured for wheelchair access to the room and bathroom facilities, with the room located in easy access to central facilities and boardwalks.

For more information about wheelchair accessibility across our operations, or contact our friendly reservations teams for advice.

7 Rare dugong sighting at Green Island

A group of very excited scuba divers with Great Adventures Cruises at Green Island were treated to a rare encounter with a young adult dugong.. Estimated to be around 2 metres in length, this was the first dugong sighting recorded by Great Adven

A group of very excited scuba divers with Great Adventures Cruises at Green Island were treated to a rare encounter with a young adult dugong.. Estimated to be around 2 metres in length, this was the first dugong sighting recorded by Great Adventures divers at Green Island in several years. It was also the first ever sighting for videographer Dan (DD) Liu and two very lucky introductory divers on holiday from Ballarat Victoria.

“It was so exciting to see! He was very curious swimming near us as the group were diving on a nearby coral bommie. He came close within about 4 metres, swimming away and then coming back for another look before swimming off over the seagrass beds,” said DD

Dugongs, often called sea cows, as they graze shallow seagrass meadows (eating up to 40kg a day!) are found across the tropical belt in Australia. They reach a length of 3 metres, live up to 70 years of age and can weigh as much as 400kg.

“Dugongs are fascinating mammals, sharing a common ancestor with elephants, and early sailors are believed to have confused them for mythical mermaids,” said Quicksilver Group Environment Compliance Manager, Doug Baird.

“They are most closely related to the manatee, their northern hemisphere relative. They resemble a large dolphin but lack a dorsal fin and have an upper lip covered in thick bristles.  They are well designed for aquatic life, with nostrils situated on top of their heads so they can breathe, and have a large, strong tail that propels them through the water. Their eyes and ears are on the side of their heads. Although their eyesight is poor, they have an acute sense of hearing.”

Dugong are threatened on a worldwide scale and in Australia, are a protected species under various legislation including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975.

This important sighting will be reported to GBRMPA’s Eye on the Reef monitoring program contributing valuable information about these endangered creatures as well as the long-term protection and management of the reef.

2 Official launch for new Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour

The Gunggandji and Yidinji Traditional Owners have commenced Wunyami Cultural Walking Tours, providing an authentic indigenous experience for visitors to Green Island.

The Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour is 100% indigenous owned and operated. It’s a wonderful addition to the island experience bringing traditional stories to life and a whole new perspective to the cultural history. Wunyami, which means “Place of Spirits” is Green Island’s original name.

Participants learn about traditional food and medicinal uses of the rainforest plants, participate in traditional fire lighting techniques and can learn about cultural importance of clay painting.

Elders Gudju Gudju Fourmile and Garth Murgha (Muka) say,” Our guides explain how the island is connected to an ancient journey of two ancestorial story-time beings who fought and formed the island and who still protect it today. This story is shared by the GuruGulu Gunggandji people (Yarrabah) and the Gimuy Yidinji people (Cairns). Our guides tell of the relationship of these warriors and the connectivity of this iconic island to the ancient seascape.”

Guides have been given special permission from their elders to share the stories of the island and the Great Barrier Reef with all who come on this tour.

The new business venture also includes the Black Seahorse gift shop which has opened in Green Island Resort’s day visitor area, selling a range of authentic indigenous artworks and merchandise. The shop draws its name from the Black Seahorse, a known lucky charm for the saltwater women of the Great Barrier Reef in memory of Alma Fourmile (nee Patterson Katchewan).

The Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour are available daily and takes approximately 1 hour. Tours can be booked at the Black Seahorse gift shop on the island.

The Great Barrier Reef’s Mass Bleaching Disaster: Can Ecotourism Help?

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 22nd, 2024 at 12:30 PM EDT

The Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its fifth coral bleaching event in eight years. Surprisingly, tour operators are crucial in providing the research the government needs to save the treasure.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

The Great Barrier Reef is in the midst of its worst mass bleaching event on record — a process in which warmer-than-usual water causes corals to expel their algae and turn white. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but it puts them under stress and makes them more susceptible to dying.

The tourism sector in the Great Barrier Reef has a long history of trying to lessen the harms of human impact. And in recent years, it has found that tourists can help.

The Reef brings more than 2 million tourists to the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia every year and it provides 60,000 jobs. The reef ecosystem boasts 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish, rare whale species and six of the world’s seven marine turtle species. It was designated a World Heritage site in 1981. However, the experience has been changing as the climate warms.

UNESCO, the UN body that oversees World Heritage sites, suggested in 2021 that the site be added to its “In Danger” list. It avoided that designation but will be evaluated again in the second half of 2024.

A History of Conservation Tourism

Tourism in the Great Barrier Reef has been conservation-focused for decades — the industry is closely regulated, caps are put on locations and tour operators, and in the past few years, tour operators have increasingly shifted their focus to educating a concerned audience about how climate change is impacting the reef.

“There have always been really conscious travelers,” said Mark Olsen, CEO of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, a non-governmental organization in Cairns, Australia. “But I think we’ve finally hit a mainstream audience, particularly travelers in their 20s and 30s who have grown up in a climate crisis and who understand that the natural world is under stress from human-induced effects.”

Passions of Paradise is among a handful of operators that offer a science tour in which tourists can dive and help monitor coral health and nurseries. Other groups have glass bottom boats that show tourists where the reef is struggling, where corals have been relocated to help them thrive, and where life is still vibrant.

One company, Reef Magic , offers visitors the chance to help replant corals outside the water. Replanting coral fragments is a highly regulated process, so most companies don’t have approval to let non-experts partake.

But Olsen says that the industry is seeing a demand for tourists who want to help, and they’re working to respond by offering hands-on activities.

Reef Research Relies on Tour Operators

Beyond tour activities, tour operators are crucial to the monitoring of the coral reef. Twenty-six tour operators are engaged in an initiative in which they provide surveys to the government. Between 2023 and 2024, they provided almost 3,500 reef health surveys to the government.

“There has always been strong involvement of tour operators in monitoring,” said Gianna Moscardo, a professor in Tropical Environments and Societies at James Cook University in Australia.

But this involvement wasn’t fully recognized until the pandemic, when the lack of tourists meant the region wasn’t collecting enough data on the reef. The Australian government realized this and started providing extra funding to reef operators to continue monitoring.

Now, the groups are not only invested in monitoring, but they’re also pulling out all the stops to limit their negative impact.

Between 2019 and 2021, at least six companies joined the Coral Nurture Initiative , a partnership between researchers and tour operators to conduct research and restore the reefs where they operate.

An operator called Tropic Wings plans to introduce a dozen battery-powered vehicles, becoming the sole tour operator in Australia with fully electric coaches. Another operator, Sailaway Port Douglas , is using the first electric glass-bottom boats.

“[Covid] was really a catalyst for more businesses to turn their enterprise toward conservation,” said Olsen.

Scientists don’t see this as an all-in-one fix for the corals — the fossil fuel emissions from international tourism are central to the problem. However, the travel industry in the Great Barrier Reef has been an essential part of how the region collects data, and the emerging partnerships could set a standard for similarly vulnerable ecosystems around the world.

“Tourism is what’s getting us the information that allows us to say, what’s the damage? What is the response? What corals are coming back?” said Olsen. “I think since December the tourism sector has collected 15,000 observations of the natural environment. It’s a proper partnership.”

Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two government jets on crime prevention tour

Live Moment Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two government jets on crime prevention tour

Premier Steven Miles and Commissioner Steve Gollschewski

Queensland's premier has faced questions over his use of government jets, as the state government announces plans to bolster police numbers and give Cairns a dedicated chopper.

Premier Steven Miles said he believed the use of two government jets to travel across regional Queensland this week to make crime prevention announcements was appropriate.

Mr Miles, Police Minister Mark Ryan and newly minted Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski have travelled to several regional cities a day this week, including Cairns, Townsville and Hervey Bay.

A police helicopter in hangar.

To transport the travelling parties — which also included local MPs — two government jets were used on multiple days to travel between Brisbane and north Queensland.

Steven Miles said the Queensland Government Air (QG Air) planes were needed for the busy schedule.

"It was determined that was the most appropriate way to deliver the itinerary," he said.

"It just would not be possible for me to have done that without access to those QG Air planes."

Mr Miles said he used commercial flights for travel when possible.

"That itinerary was based on my desire to make sure that I, the police commissioner, and police minster are in regional Queensland as much as we can possibly be," he said.

Live Moment

Look back at how ABC readers and other Australians responded to this live moment.

How can a Polair helicopter assist police?

  • Police say Polair capabilities can enhance police operations in regional areas
  • Polair helicopters have advanced camera, thermal imaging and night vision capabilities
  • The helicopters are used daily to help police with tracking offenders, surveillance operations and search and rescue missions

That is where we will leave our live coverage. Thank you for joining us.

If crime rates are going down in Cairns why is a police helicopter needed?

Police Minister Mark Ryan says in the financial year to date, which is about nine months, the number of offences against properties in Cairns is down 12 per cent   and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle is down 20 per cent.

He says the new helicopter will be there to complement the work that police do.

"Polair is not just about apprehending offenders, it is about saving lives. "The very first call for service the Townsville helicopter was called to was a little boy lost in the bush. "Police tell me that they may not have found that boy if it was not for the helicopter. "That is why you need Polair."

MP says a police helicopter is a 'game changer' for Cairns

"If you are a crook out there you will now be observed from a very high altitude, you won't even know that the machine is even up there, but it will see you," Barron River MP Craig Crawford says. "It can lock on to the vehicle that you have stolen, it can see your heat signature when you are running through the park in the middle of the night. "You will be caught, you will be found, you will be charged and you will go in front of a magistrate."

Wondering what this is? Join us next time we're live and be part of the discussion.

On Monday, Mr Miles travelled from Brisbane to Cairns to hold a press conference alongside Mr Gollschewski after he was announced as the new police commissioner.

Mr Miles spoke in Cairns again on Tuesday, before he travelled to Townsville then Hervey Bay to make announcements about tackling youth crime with Mr Ryan and Mr Gollschewski.

The trio went from Brisbane to Cairns and Townsville again on Wednesday to spruik a new police helicopter and funding for more police officers.

Deputy Opposition Leader Jarrod Bleijie said the premier was   "wasting valuable resources with two luxury jets flying to the same location".

"The same five locations with his police minister," he said.

"They couldn't fly in the same plane together?"

Official guidelines state the government jets should only be used when commercial flights are unavailable or inadequate.

'Aggressive recruitment campaign'

The dedicated police helicopter will be used to combat crime, as the state government announces plans to bolster the force with 900 new officers.

The ambitious recruitment target comes ahead of the looming state election and two days after Steve Gollschewski was appointed as police commissioner.

The commitment includes a boost of 500 sworn officers and 400 unsworn personnel over the next three years.

Despite a competitive labour market, the state government said an "aggressive recruiting campaign" had led to a 200 per cent jump in the number of recruits in the pipeline over the last year.

Nearly 700 aspiring officers are undergoing training and more than 2,000 applicants are in the recruitment process.

"The extra personnel will be allocated to areas across Queensland, ensuring we are future-proofing our police and keeping pace with population growth," Commissioner Gollschewski said.

"Despite the recruiting challenges being experienced in policing jurisdictions across Australia, the QPS is continuing to see a healthy pipeline of police recruit applicants."

New police chopper

With crime shaping up as a key issue in this year's state election, the Queensland government has also committed to purchasing a police helicopter for Cairns.

The aerial asset will include sophisticated thermal imaging cameras and night vision capabilities.

Townsville received a police chopper in January, which is flown daily to track offenders and stolen cars, conduct surveillance operations and search for missing people.

So far, it has taken 110 flights and located 74 persons of interest and 41 stolen vehicles.

"We heard yesterday from the police in Townsville that the helicopter there can allow them to do some tasks that might have once taken weeks in just minutes," Premier Steven Miles said.

Commissioner Gollschewski said he was "delighted" that Cairns would be getting its own chopper.

"We've seen how extraordinarily successful these assets are both in south-east Queensland and in Townsville," he said.

"They are a game changer for our police here and they will be a game changer for the community."

The announcements are the latest in a suite of new government initiatives to combat crime.
