Jumbo-Visma win opening team time trial of La Vuelta 22 as Robert Gesink takes leader's red jersey in Utrecht

The Dutch veteran Gesink led his Jumbo-Visma teammates home across the line during the Spanish Grand Tour's first-stage team time trial to take the race lead on home soil in the Netherlands. The race returns to Spain on Tuesday.

Dutchman Robert Gesink is the first leader of the 2022 road cycling season's third and final men's Grand Tour, the 2022 Vuelta a España , after his Jumbo-Visma team won the race's opening team time trial.

The race's 22 teams completed a 23.3-kilometre (14.5-mile) lap around Utrecht as part of a three-stage Grand Depart for the Spanish race in the Netherlands, with the home team – and rider – giving the Dutch fans a result to cheer.

Jumbo-Visma finished the first stage in 24 minutes 40 seconds, 13 seconds faster than second-placed team Ineos Grenadiers , giving three-time defending champion Primoz Roglic – who was second over the line behind Gesink – a small lead over Richard Carapaz .

As Gesink was the first man across the line from his team, he picks up the leader's red jersey ahead of Saturday's second stage, a 175.1km (108.8mi) trek from 's-Hertogenbosch back to Utrecht.

The race will reach Spanish soil on Tuesday, with a race from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Laguardia on Stage 4.

Robert Gesink with the red jersey

Vuelta a España: Robert Gesink in red as Jumbo-Visma triumph in team time trial

  • Veteran Dutch rider takes overall lead after opening stage
  • Jumbo-Visma finish 13 seconds clear of Ineos in Utrecht

Dutchman Robert Gesink will get to wear the leader’s red jersey in his ninth appearance in the Grand Tour race after his Jumbo-Visma team won the opening team time trial in the Netherlands on Friday.

Jumbo-Visma, competing on home soil as the Netherlands finally got to open the Vuelta after not being able to host it in previous years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, finished 13 seconds ahead of team Ineos Grenadiers and 14 seconds in front of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.

Teammate Primoz Roglic also got off to a good start, in his quest to win an unprecedented fourth straight Spanish Vuelta title.

“He’s the one that deserves it the most, it’s a pleasure racing for so many years with him,” Roglic said. “I started with him in the team, he taught me a lot and it’s nice to win as the home team with a home rider.”

The Jumbo-Visma team cross a bridge during the opening time trail in Utrecht.

It had been doubtful whether Roglic would be able to defend his Vuelta title after he was injured at the Tour de France, which affected his preparations. “My condition is good enough to win today,” Roglic said. “I’m super happy about it. It was a pleasure today, the guys did a really great job. Twenty days more to come.”

The Spanish Vuelta remains the only Grand Tour event won by Roglic, who has finished second at the Tour de France and third at the Giro d’Italia. He will be trying to join Spaniard Roberto Heras (2000, 2003-05) as the only rider to win four Vuelta titles. Tony Rominger and Alberto Contador are the only other riders with three Vuelta titles.

Pidcock storms to European mountain bike gold

robert gesink tour 2022

The Olympic champion Tom Pidcock won gold in the mountain bike cross-country event at the European Championships in Munich, producing a dominant performance to win by 11 seconds.

"It was a pretty hard race," Pidcock, who won his first Tour de France stage last month, said afterwards. "I kind of made it hard for myself because on this course with that speed, riding out front by myself makes it all that much harder.

"I crashed on the first corner - at least it was dry," the 23-year-old added. "Thankfully it wasn't too bad and I managed to get back to the front. There's still a couple of world championships to go [this year] so I'm not finished yet."

The second and third stages will also take place in the Netherlands. The three-week race will feature eight flat stages – two of them with high-altitude finishes – as well as four hilly stages, seven mountain stages and two time trials. Riders will get three rest days.

Gesink: I hope Primoz Roglic succeeds in winning 'one big prize', the Tour de France

Veteran climber says 'It's going to be an interesting summer' going up against former teammate

Primoz Roglic and Robert Gesink at the 2023 Vuelta a España

Jumbo-Visma 's veteran climber Robert Gesink has said that "cycling fans will be the biggest winners" of Primož Roglič 's move from the Dutch squad to Bora-Hansgrohe this winter.

The Dutchman, who played a key role in assisting Roglič to his three Vuelta a España wins from 2019 to 2021, called the transfer a "logical" move for his former teammate, who makes the switch after eight years at Jumbo-Visma.

Speaking to the Dutch magazine Ride , Gesink indicated that he harboured no ill will towards Roglič over the Slovenian's departure, even going as far as to say that he hopes the 34-year-old succeeds in his quest to win the Tour de France .

"Roglič's departure to Bora-Hansgrohe is no real surprise to me," Gesink told Ride , via an excerpt published in WielerFlits . "Primož has won almost everything in stage racing in his career, except the one big prize, the Tour de France.

'I don't want to have any regrets' - Why Primoz Roglic will target the 2024 Tour de France Primoz Roglic thought about moving teams 'since beginning of the year' Denk: Bora-Hansgrohe's Primoz Roglic signing 'inspiring' for Tour de France goals

"With his drive, it's actually logical that he would want to do everything he could for another two years to get that top prize. If I let the cycling enthusiast in me speak, I actually hope he succeeds in that endeavour. What a wonderful story it would be if, after all these years with so many big wins, he now adds that missing yellow jersey to his palmarès."

Along with wins at the Vuelta and Giro d'Italia, the latter coming this season, Roglič has racked up WorldTour stage race wins over the years, with 10 wins including Paris-Nice , the Tour de Romandie, and the Critérium du Dauphiné filling the honour roll.

He leaves behind Jumbo-Visma having delivered 74 wins for the Dutch team since turning pro with them in 2016. Now, the team – known as Visma-Lease a Bike from next season – will look to double Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard and Vuelta winner Sepp Kuss to lead the fight against Roglič as well as Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

"Primož is one of the four riders who are a certainty for success or top placings in the stage races," Gesink said. "Our team would have liked to keep two of those riders, which is why they were also excited about the possible arrival of Remco Evenepoel in a merger with Soudal-QuickStep. That didn't work out.

"And yes, we still have a strong block of riders who are well-attuned to each other. We've already proven that the team can win a grand tour without Primož – at the Tour last season."

Gesink went on to say that battling against teammate-turned-rival Roglič will require the team to change tack next July, especially given the fact he'll enjoy the backing of a strong squad including the likes of Aleksandr Vlasov, Dani Martínez, Jai Hindley , and Emanuel Buchmann going forward.

But the 37-year-old, who is set to call time on a 16-year pro career next winter, said that he's confident that his team will be more than up to the challenge.

"To compete against Primož will require a different dynamic. He also has a strong block around him at Bora-Hansgrohe ," he said. "There's no other rider who knows what he wants and can use his experience so well.

"However, I'm also convinced that our team will continue to rely on its own strength, and we won't adjust our course to an opponent – even if it is Primož. It's going to be an interesting summer. The neutral cycling fans will be the biggest winners of Roglič's transfer."
