Sade equals pure perfection Three times. That’s the approximate number of times I've seen Sade in concert.

And I remember each one. The first instance, I was a concert newbie. It was 1990 something and I was still in high school. I vaguely recall the opening acts (Digable Planets and, according to my sister who attended with me, Boyz II Men). The main thing I recollect about that show? It was the best concert ever!

Up until that point, I think the only other concert I had attended was New Edition (that was 1989 and I only know this because I still have the program). Between Sade and New Edition, I don’t know who I loved more. As a child of the 80s, Sade was one artist on constant play in my cassette player. As I reminisce, I wonder what I knew about love being a crime in the fifth grade, but back then you could catch me belting out Is It A Crime like the boy in my social studies class had mistreated my poor10-year-old heart.

But back to the second time I attended a Sade show. It was Sept.18, 2001 – The Lover’s Rock Tour (at this stage of my life, I kept concert stubs. Maybe I knew one day I would need to refer to it because blogging would be an important aspect of my life). Seven days prior, hijackers changed America forever, so the mood was somber.

India.Arie, who was a relatively newcomer, opened the show. I was already in love with her, so to see both women on the same stage had me in heaven. There was only one problem – I was on the lawn at the Chronicle Pavilion. Afterwards, I realized that I will never, EVER again sit on the lawn. Sade looked like an ant and jumbo screens weren’t that effective in translating what was really happening on stage. You know what I remember most about this show? It was, again, the BEST concert I had ever been to! Sade's stage presence was mesmerizing; the show just left you speechless. There isn’t an artist out then (or now) that can put on a concert like Sade. Absolutely, positively NO ONE! (Well, maybe Michael Jackson, but I’ll never know because, well, I didn’t get a chance to see him in action before he, well, you know.) Ten years later, I still stand by that statement. Sade doesn’t need back up dancers; she doesn’t have to fly through the air or dance from one end of the stage to the other in four-inch stilettos.

She is pure entertainment just standing on stage, holding a microphone and singing from her gut. Sade has a stage presence that simply captivates you. Her moves are simple, yet fluid.

But they are enough. Ten years is a long time for an artist to be away. Would Sade still have it? Could she still put on a performance that I had previously proclaimed to be the best shows I had ever witnessed? Aug. 27, 2011 was I received the answer to those questions. As I sit here listening to the playlist I created in iTunes of Sade’s setlist from her Solider of Love Tour, I feel chills running through my body once again – all these months later.

From the first beat of Solider of Love to the encore, Sade kept the crowd mesmerized and on our feet. The best way to describe her vocals is to say they are pure perfection. She sounds exactly like the CD – and I do mean exactly – only 100times better. The same can be said for the rest of the band. While Sade is the front woman, the band deserves as much credit as she does for creating such timeless music. Besides the music, what makes this show so incredible are the stage transformations. I can’t even begin to depict what takes place in the background, so I won’t even make an attempt. I will say, Sade becomes one with the stage at a certain point and you’re left wondering how it’s even possible. The setlist (see below) was a great mix from all albums. Lover’s Rock was the only song missing that I really wanted to hear. She blew the roof off the house with Is It A Crime (which just happens to be my all-time favorite Sade song. Remember the fifth grade?). When she hit that last note – whew is all I can say! You know a concert is beyond anything you’ve ever experienced when you are conversing with a fellow concertgoer and neither one of you can put into words exactly what you saw, but you know you experienced something that was truly amazing and will never be forgotten. So, it’s official. I still have yet to experience anything like a Sade concert (and I say this having seen A LOT of artists). She still has it and I just hope it’s not another 10 years before I get to have these warm, glowing feelings again. One last thing, Sade looked absolutely stunning! At age 52, she blows a lot of these young girls out the water! Favorite moment: Sade’s introductions of the band were cute and very personal.

From Cher to Ozzy Osbourne, see the 2024 list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees

A mix of first-timers and longtime hopefuls made the cut as 2024 inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The eight entrants in the performer category span rock, pop and hip-hop, and were announced during the live broadcast of the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” episode of “American Idol" on April 21.

The newest Rock Hall inductees are:

  • Mary J. Blige .
  • Dave Matthews Band.
  • Peter Frampton .
  • Kool & The Gang.
  • Ozzy Osbourne .
  • A Tribe Called Quest.

In addition, the musical influence award will go to a trio of blues heroes – Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton.

Jimmy Buffett will be honored posthumously with the musical excellence award, along with MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield.

The annual Ahmet Ertegun award will go to screenwriter/TV producer Suzanne de Passe, who served as executive producer of “Showtime At the Apollo” from 2002-2008.

Review: Mariah Carey's new Vegas residency manages to be both dazzling and down-to-earth

The ceremony to honor the new class will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and stream live on Disney+ (Hulu the next day) with an airing on ABC at a later date. Ticket information for the show is forthcoming.

Five of the inductees landed on the ballot for the first time this year – Cher, Foreigner, Frampton, Kool & The Gang and Osbourne, who is already inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, which received its coronation in 2006.

Blige was previously nominated in 2021, A Tribe Called Quest  learned that the third time is the charm – following nods in 2022 and 2023 – and Dave Matthews Band, previously the only fan vote winners (in 2020) to not land on the final list won this year’s fan vote again and this time, was chosen for entry. The fan vote counts as one vote with the general voting body.

In December, Cher told Kelly Clarkson on her talk show that she feels the Rock Hall snubbed her for many years.

"You know what, I wouldn't be in it now if they gave me a million dollars," she told Clarkson . "I'm never going to change my mind."

Other 2024 nominees who weren't chosen for this year's induction include Lenny Kravitz , Mariah Carey, Sade and Oasis.

To be eligible, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

Melissa Ruggieri is among the more than 1,000 voting members – composed of artists, historians and members of the music industry – of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: From Cher to Ozzy Osbourne, see the 2024 list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Cher. shown at the April 1 iHeartRadio Music Awards, has said she doesn't want a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, but she was among those chosen for 2024 class.

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
