These 4 New Jeep Safari 2024 Concepts Run From Retro To Outright Rude

In Moab, Utah, from March 23 to 31, Jeep is once again holding its Easter Jeep Safari event. Easter has always been the time of year when Jeep shows off whatever wacky concepts it's working on, and the 58th annual event is no different. For this year, Jeep brought out four concepts: the Low Down, the Willys Dispatcher, the High Top, and the Vacationeer. 

Starting from the least crazy, the Willys Dispatcher has the bones of a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and is supposed to call to mind the first generation of Jeeps meant for regular people who weren't in service in the European of Pacific Theaters of World War II. The powertrain is the same: a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor that outputs a combined 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. 

The body and aesthetics, however, are a different story. The paint is a color that Jeep is calling Element 115 Green, and the steelie-inspired wheels are 1950s cream-colored. The inside is saddle leather and cloth seats. To further give it a retro look, the headrests were removed because why not? It's a convertible with only the slightest impression of a conventional "roof." A huge embossed "Willys" logo on the hood completes the Jeep's classic vibe.

The Vacationeer and the High Top

Next is the Vacationeer. It's based on the Grand Wagoneer, only with a fairly substantial lift and the obligatory 35-inch tires. It sports a number of skid plates underneath for overlanding aptitude. But the centerpiece is the huge rooftop tent supplied by RedTail Overland, called the Skyloft. The interior temperature is adjustable (because, of course, it is), and can fit up to two people. It's powered by the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six engine that makes 510 horsepower (the same engine that will feature in the upcoming new Dodge Charger), and it's finished in a color called "Spearminted." A rooftop tent on a luxury SUV isn't that unusual, but in this case, the factory roof of the Grand Wagoneer has been removed, making Vacationeer essentially a two-story camping spot.

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept is fitted with 40-inch tires and an adjustable air suspension system. According to a Jeep press release, it was made to show the Gladiator's off-road credibility. It sports a "Ginger Snap" paint scheme and the tried and true Pentastar 3.6-liter V6.

The Jeep Low Down

Lastly, the Jeep Low Down Concept takes the cake for the most insane Jeep the automaker will show off. It's powered by the soon-to-be departed 392 V8 and is based on the Wrangler Rubicon 392. It has 42-inch tires on 20-inch wheels and is completely absurd, whatever angle you look at it. To make matters weirder, there's a clear cover on the hood so you can see the engine. Plus, there's no infotainment system to speak of. Jeep exterior designer Chris Piscitelli points out, there's a two-mode exhaust that can be set to "loud and entirely obnoxious: that's all the entertainment you need in this one." That's about as unambiguous of a reason you can have.

There's little chance the Jeep-buying public will see cars like the four Easter Safari concepts hit dealership lots anytime soon, and the event really acts as a testing ground for both Jeep engineers and the Jeep Performance Parts division. That said, it's hard not to get at least a little excited to see goofy factory Jeeps with wild (and in some cases impractical) modifications thrashing about the desert.

Here Is Every 2022 Easter Jeep Safari Concept Vehicle

• Jeep just unveiled its concepts for the 2022 Easter Jeep Safari
• Wranglers were the main focus, but the Grand Charokee and Gladiator got some love, too.

The Easter Jeep Safari is a big deal for off-road enthusiasts, and recently Jeep has taken to unveiling cool concepts during the nine-day rock-crawling bonanza. This year, the automaker is bringing seven concept vehicles to the event, including an EV Wrangler that's nearly as quick as a Model S Plaid. You can read more about that car in detail here, but we've compiled the full list of new concepts below. Maybe, you'll take a little inspiration from Jeep for your next off-road build.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk PHEV Concept

One of the newest vehicles in Jeep's stable gets an off-road kit for this generation's inaugural Easter Jeep Safari trip. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk PHEV concept is just one example of Jeep melding electrification with outdoor exploration. The concept is driven by the Grand Cherokee 4xe's four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain, which produces a stout 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The concept also gets striking blue exterior paint, a blacked out hood to reduce glare, a custom roof rack and knobby 33-inch tires wrapped around fresh 20-inch wheels.

Jeep '41 Concept

Jeep '41 Concept

A little throwback to the Jeeps that were sent overseas during WWII, the Jeep '41 concept is a beefed-up two-door Wrangler Rubicon 4xe painted a classic shade of olive drab green and partnered with a tan soft top. Other exterior features include a Warn winch, black steel bumpers, Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) half doors and accent-colored tow hooks.

The throwback Jeep also features a JPP two-inch lift kit and 35-inch mud-terrain tires sitting on 17-inch Fifteen52 wheels that are the same green as the exterior. Jeep says the '41 concept is fit for a five-star general, but we'd happily run one ourselves.

Jeep Magneto 2.0 Concept

The Magneto 2.0 builds off of the original Magneto that debuted at last year's EJS. It's a fully electric two-door Jeep with an extra long wheel base, a six-speed manual transmission (!), more than 600 horsepower, and a 0-60 time of 2 seconds. Yes, you read that right. Jeep Rubicon 20th Anniversary Concept

It might be hard to believe, but the Rubicon sub-brand has been with us for two decades. To celebrate, Jeep is basing the Rubicon 20th Anniversary concept on the baddest Wrangler to date: the V8-powered, 470-horsepower Wrangler 392. The matte gray exterior wrap is contrasted by gold tow hooks, badging and other accents. A JPP two-inch lift, 17-inch beadlock wheels, 37-inch mud-terrain tires and steel bumpers were added for extra durability off-road.

Jeep Bob Concept

Meet Bob. Bob is a Gladiator with a lot of custom work to make it extremely capable off-road. Modifications start with a pickup box that has been shortened by a full foot, plus steel bumpers designed to improve approach and departure angles. Bob also features a three-inch lift, Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60 axles, King coils and bypass shocks, and 40-inch tires. The B-pillars and doors are removed to provide a unique open-air experience. Orange accents that are liberally used throughout the exterior and cabin, along with a diesel V6 underhood, complete this intriguing concept.

Jeep Birdcage Concept by JPP

The Birdcage concept doesn't take open-air motoring to the extreme that Bob does, but it does lack a windshield and roof. A roof rack is mounted on the roll cage, as are header-mounted 14-inch LED light bars. The Wrangler 4xe-based concept features a two-inch lift kit, Fox shocks, 17x8.5-inch wheels, 37-inch tires, and custom fender flares designed to accommodate the wider wheel and tire package. It also features the Add-a-Trunk concept, which includes a lockable decklid panel for securing items while parked. The vehicle is painted brown and features blue accents — a theme that is continued on the inside with brown leather seats contrasted by blue accents and blue stitching.

Jeep D-Coder Concept by JPP

The D-Coder concept is based on the Jeep Gladiator and shows off more than 30 different available JPP accessories. Most of them are painted Maraschino Red (despite looking pink) to starkly contrast the all black Gladiator. There are the requisite hardware upgrades like a JPP two-inch lift, FOX shocks and JPP 17x8.5-inch five-spoke wheels that wear 37-inch tires. There's a rack that rests above the bed, some tube doors, a snorkel, and plenty of other accessories on this fully kitted out Gladiator. The color scheme might not be for everyone, but the accessories would look right on any Gladiator.

2021 Easter Jeep Safari: Jeep Unveils All-Electric Wrangler Magneto, Other Concepts

The annual Easter Jeep Safari is to four-wheelin’ Jeep enthusiasts what the Sturgis rally is to Harley-Davidson motorcycle fans: an annual pilgrimage to the vehicle’s natural environment for thousands of brand enthusiasts. It’s also a great place Jeep has found to study those owners’ desires and bounce new ideas off of them for upcoming models, trims, accessories and themes. The 2021 event is being held despite the ongoing pandemic, and Jeep will be there again with a raft of new concept vehicles and Mopar-accessorized demonstrator trucks to show off where the brand is going, what it’s learning and what its most ardent fans think of its efforts.

Jeep Magneto: A Stick-Shift EV (Yes, Really)

Top billing this year goes to something momentous: a fully electric Wrangler called the Magneto concept. Built off of a two-door JL-platform Wrangler Rubicon, the Magneto comes across as still very much a development vehicle for Jeep. Jeep design chief Mark Allen was very clear, telling journalists in a video presentation unveiling the Magneto “is a retrofit study, not a clean-sheet redesign.” The brand has replaced the Wrangler’s standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and fuel system with an axial-flux electric motor that can spin up to 6,000 rpm and that still mounts up to the six-speed manual transmission that the Wrangler came with. Four Webasto battery packs have been fitted inside custom milled aluminum housings: one over the motor, one behind the rear axle and two sandwiched between the axles where the fuel tank once sat. Combined, it’s a 70-kilowatt-hour, 800-volt lithium-ion pack, but two 12-volt batteries are also employed to power ancillary systems like lights, a winch and heater. 

With the exception of the removal of the gas engine, the rest of the Rubicon drivetrain has been left untouched — it uses the same Dana 44 front and rear axles and the same two-speed Rock-Trac transfer case, so it retains the Rubicon’s super-low crawl ratio as a result. The electric motor has been tuned to produce the same power output as the V-6: 285 horsepower and 273 pounds-feet of torque, so the rest of the drivetrain needed no alteration.

Some effort has been made to remove weight from the Magneto, so it has no doors, roof or backseat, but even with these measures, the two-door Wrangler tips the scales at a hefty 5,750 pounds, approximately 1,500 pounds more than a standard manual-equipped two-door V-6 Rubicon. Despite this portliness, the Magneto can go from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, according to Jeep. 

Allen offered up what it’s like to drive the Magneto off-road: “It’s a total rock crawler, thanks to that electric motor,” he said. “You use the clutch to put it into 1st gear and you don’t have to hold the clutch in, as the motor isn’t idling, so you can’t stall it. Then it’s just application of throttle. You can go super-slow using all that torque at near-zero rpm.” 

The clutch is then used while moving when you’re shifting gears, but Allen insisted that the curious setup combines the best of both an automatic transmission’s possible two-foot driving strategy when driving off-road and the minute control of a manual gearbox. 

“As an example, it can move about 5 feet in one minute,” Allen said, a useful pace for extreme rock crawling. 

Clearly, the Magneto is still very much a development-level test mule, and Jeep said it’s eager to get it out to Moab to see both how it handles such environments and also get a sense of what the Jeep-buying public thinks of a pure-electric Wrangler. No production plans were announced, but Jeep will soon offer its first electrified Wrangler in the form of the Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid model set to enter production this year.

The Other Concepts

Unlike previous years, where Jeep would field a bunch of new off-the-wall concepts, this year’s EJS activities are clearly scaled back just a bit. A few other concepts will also end up in Moab:

Jeepster Beach

This year’s resto-mod concept is the Jeepster Beach, a restored and modified 1968 Jeepster Commando that features original-style bodywork over a fully modern Wrangler JL chassis and powertrain. The Tequila Gold paint is complemented by a stunning ivory and red interior. The Jeepster Beach features the Wrangler’s available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but it’s been tweaked by SRT engineers to boost power and torque “by 25% each,” according to Jeep. 

Red Bare Gladiator Rubicon

A Red Bare is a Gladiator pickup truck with Jeep’s new turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6, 37-inch tires on 17-inch beadlock wheels, Dana 44 axles with a 4.88:1 gear for a super-low 91:1 crawl ratio, a Warn winch and guard on the steel front bumper, Jeep’s new Mopar half-doors and a relocated spare tire now mounted in the bed floor with a steel deck above it, capped off by a body-colored sport bar. 

A follow-up to the 2019 Easter Jeep Safari Gladiator Wayout concept, the Farout continues the overlanding theme with a four-person AT Overland Equipment Habitat Truck Topper tent mounted to the roof rack. It also gets the diesel 3.0-liter V-6, which should deliver more than 400 miles of range, plus 37-inch tires on 17-inch beadlock wheels, and a bed done up in orange bedliner with a slide-out camping stove and Dometic refrigerator-freezer unit. It’s painted Earl, a gray hue Jeep soon plans to introduce for the Gladiator.

Mopar Specials

Beyond the official concepts that Jeep brings to EJS, it also likes to tote along some demonstrator vehicles outfitted by Mopar, the parts and accessories division for Jeep and its fellow Stellantis brands. That allows Mopar to show off new and interesting stuff from its Jeep Performance Parts line. This year, two vehicles will make the trip:

A Gladiator pickup made for the extreme mountain biker who likes to go really far into the bush, the Top Dog features special K-9 Blue paint, JPP wheels with 37-inch tires, a winch bumper, grille guard, 5-inch LED accessory lights, rock rails and a roof storage rack, all from the JPP catalog. Jeep replaced the bed with a PCOR storage unit that houses a Dometic refrigerator and a fake Snap-On toolbox that actually hides a commercial hot dog-rolling cooker.

Orange Peelz

This orange two-tone Wrangler features some steel concept-style fenders, a 2-inch lift, 37-inch tires, a customer two-piece fused Freedom Top hard top with a glass overhead insert, a cat-back exhaust, unique seat covers, Mopar’s new half-doors and a Gorilla Glass windshield that’s lighter and more chip-resistant than standard automotive glass.

This is the type you will likely use if you decide to take a luxury fly-in safari.   They are almost always found within the parks and reserves and will only pick you up from the airstrip when you flight arrives.

When it comes variation, the Open Side Safari Jeep is no exception.  Some will be completely open allowing unfettered interaction with nature – getting up close and personal with the sights, sounds and smells of the bush.  Other types of Open Safari vehicles  will have a canopy on the top to protect you from the sun and rain.

They are mostly used for safaris in southern Africa destination, namely  Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and  Zambia . But as mentioned above, a good number of private conservancies in Eastern Africa safari destinations of Kenya and Tanzania also prefer  the  use the open safari jeeps.

Are Open Safari Jeeps Safe? All precautions and common-sense approach employed, the answer is YES. most of Africa’s wildlife do not see human beings in an open-sided safari vehicles as a threat. A leopard or lion can walk past you in an open-sided vehicle and not give it a second look. This means a safari in an open vehicle is safe providing the proper precautions are taken. Many of these precautions are common sense: for example, talking in low voices and making no sudden movements.

Seating Arrangement On the Open Safari Jeep

As the name suggests, they are open on both sides, making them ideal for game viewing, photography,  bird-watching while offering an intimate and real connection with the African wilderness.

It is important to note that since these vehicles are mostly stationed in the safari camps and lodge – and so there are fewer them stationed there.  That means one will almost always have to content with sharing  with other guests from the camp or lodge where they are staying. If you prefer to have exclusive use of an open vehicle this needs to be arranged, at extra cost, in advance. Some open safari jeeps  are designed with tiered seating, so that nobody’s view is blocked by the person in front of them.

Protection from the Weather Elements

Due to their being open, there is obviously limited protection from the the elements, it is therefore  vital that you protect yourself against the sun. Hats, scarves and windbreakers are all excellent shields from fierce and hot Ultra Violet rays.  Some of these vehicles do have canvas/plastic canopies that can be closed, if the weather becomes un co-operative. Thunderstorms in Africa can be wild, and come on within minutes!

Jeep Brand Hits the Trails at 57th Annual Easter Jeep Safari With Collection of New Concepts

Electrified power and commanding performance will be front and center during this year’s Safari. The Jeep brand and Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) by Mopar design teams have created several one-of-a-kind rock-crawling and terrain-traversing vehicles that will take four-wheeling to the next level.

“Every year, more than 20,000 Jeep enthusiasts descend on Moab, Utah, for Easter Jeep Safari to wheel in the most extreme off-road conditions, where our engineers continue to push the capability of our Jeep vehicles to next levels,” said Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “It’s the perfect place to showcase our seven new Jeep concepts, because it’s with these Jeep enthusiasts that we’ll be able to push the limits even more and get their feedback on where they want to take the Jeep brand into the future.”

This year, seven distinctive Jeep brand and JPP concept vehicles are equipped with an array of advanced powertrains. Back by popular demand is Jeep Wrangler Magneto, the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) concept from the Jeep brand. The third iteration of the Jeep Wrangler SUV concept, Magneto 3.0, and three additional Jeep 4xe concept vehicles are testament to the Jeep brand’s commitment to Zero Emission Freedom and 4x4 leadership. Each concept also features the latest production and prototype JPP from Mopar, developed with rigorous specifications and legendary 4x4 capability in mind.

“Our annual trip to Moab allows us to showcase the latest selection of custom and authentic, quality-tested Jeep Performance Parts from Mopar,” said Mark Bosanac, North America senior vice president, Mopar service, parts and customer care. “Unlike any other aftermarket offerings, our growing portfolio of factory-tested and factory-backed parts and accessories are specifically designed and engineered to face the toughest trails in the world.”

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 3.0 Concept

When the Jeep design team began building the Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept, the intention was always to use the platform to test, discover and push the boundaries of 4x4 electrification.

The Jeep Magneto 1.0 concept was first introduced in 2021 as a fully capable BEV that was stealthy, quiet, quick and an unmistakable rock-climbing force. Jeep brand engineers and designers created a zero-emission vehicle with Jeep 4x4 capability that provided new levels of efficiency, environmental responsibility and extreme performance on and off road.

Based on a two-door ’20 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the Jeep Magneto features a custom-built axial flux electric motor that operates up to 6,000 rpm and connects to a six-speed manual transmission for ultimate control. The compact e-motor was initially tuned to deliver up to 273 lb.-ft. of torque and 285 hp.

The debut of the Jeep Magneto 2.0 concept in 2022 pushed the performance envelope further. Peak amperage in the propulsion system was more than doubled to 600 amps, which enabled the concept vehicle to instantly deliver up to 850 lb.-ft. of peak torque to the wheels—more than triple the torque output of the previous version of the concept—and 625 hp for serious rock-climbing challenges.

Updates to Jeep Magneto this year include a new, more efficient motor that boosts the torque output, as well as updated programming, which results in a 20% increase in useable energy and range.

Also new to the Jeep Magneto 3.0 concept this year are three driver selectable functions that capitalize on the benefits of a fully electric powertrain in serious off-road situations:

• Output select allows the driver to choose between two power settings (standard: 285 hp/273 lb.-ft. of torque; maximum: 650 hp/900 lb.-ft. of torque).
• Two-stage power regeneration mode allows normal driving while off, or enhanced brake regeneration using the electric motor when engaged. 
• Aggressive hill-descent mode can be selected in low range to offer true ‘one pedal’ off-road driving in serious rock-crawling situations.

Adding to its prowess are Dynatrac 60 front axles (5.38:1 ratio), Dynatrac 80 rear axles (5.38:1 ratio), 20-in. off-road beadlock wheels, 40-in. mud terrain tires and a custom 3-in. lift.   

The Jeep Magneto 3.0 concept also tests the concept vehicle’s proportion. For ease of access, the door opening has been modified and swept back an additional 6 in. For added accessibility, a new B-pillar was moved rearward 60mm from stock to make way for a custom anti-roll bar. The front fender was stretched back on the trailing edge two inches. The windshield has been raked back 12 degrees to give the side view a “chopped” roof feel without shortening the front glass.  

Jeep Magneto 3.0 has an updated paint scheme that pays homage to all three evolutions of the concept vehicle. The Bright White and Surf Blue motif remains, but the third iteration introduces more vibrant exterior details, including the addition of red accents.

The Jeep Magneto 3.0 concept front seats have been re-trimmed in a rich blue leather and adorned with red accent stitching to match the exterior. The rear seats have been removed and the floor has been Rhino-lined in Surf Blue for added functionality and durability.

Jeep Scrambler 392 Concept

Originally introduced in ’81, the Jeep Scrambler (CJ-8) was the Jeep brand’s first convertible, compact truck. Highly capable and versatile, this small pickup truck was similar to the CJ-7, but featured a longer 103-in. wheelbase and a long rear overhang for increased cargo space.

Fast forward four decades, the Jeep Scrambler 392 concept builds on the fun, open-air origins of the CJ-8 with a powerful twist. Though a V-8 engine was never offered in the CJ-8, the 392 Scrambler concept offers impressive power and incredible torque with its 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 engine (470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque).  

The Jeep Scrambler 392 concept, which started as a four-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, also emphasizes lightweight off-road performance, achieved through custom carbon-fiber bodywork. The transformation showcases the Scrambler’s new two-door aesthetic with an open-air freedom personality. The windshield is laid back 12 degrees and matches a lower roof. The modified silhouette gives a nod to chopped top hotrods.

The newly released AccuAir air suspension kit developed for the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator allows an adjustable suspension lift ranging from 1.5 in. up to 5.5 in. and can be custom adjusted on the fly with an in-cab controller or through long-range Bluetooth on a wireless device.

The sculptural rear quarter panel is designed to emphasize the door aperture, as well as wider rear flares. The updated bodywork also includes a new front fender flare and a new carbon-fiber hood. In the middle of the hood rests a tinted clear insert to spotlight the heart of the Jeep Scrambler 392 concept, its monster 392-cu.-in. engine. Custom front and rear lightweight bumpers and the new fender flares provide added clearance for a larger tire and wheel combo.

The Jeep Scrambler 392 concept sits on 40-inch tires wrapped around custom 20-in. rims. The rims and tow hooks are finished in Brass Monkey paint, the same as today’s stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. The exterior of the concept is painted in Sublime green, while the interior boasts custom seats with plaid blue inserts and green stitching.

’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept

First introduced in ’74, the Jeep Cherokee (SJ) was a sporty, two-door version of the Wagoneer and featured bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and racy detailing designed to appeal to younger, more adventurous drivers.

A year later, the Wide-Track option was available with key upgraded features, including exterior stripes, larger tires, 3-in. wider axles, larger front and rear wheel cutouts, Dana 44 front and rear axles and an interior with more creature comforts.

To pay homage to the Jeep Cherokee SJ, a first-of-its-kind vehicle with on- and off-road chops, the Jeep design team set out to reimagine the iconic full-size SUV with a modern spin.

The Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept began its life as a ’78 Jeep Cherokee, which was affectionately blended with a ’22 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. The original Jeep Cherokee was intended to take the Jeep Cherokee SJ to the next level of performance, and that ethos rings true for this concept vehicle.

The original body was heavily modified and the exterior fuses original proportions with a bright, unmistakably ’70s-theme multicolor paint scheme. While the ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept looks similar to a vintage Jeep Cherokee SJ at first glance, it has transformed into a modern, electrified, off-road performer.

Under the hood, the ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept features the advanced Jeep Wrangler 4xe powertrain, which provides on- and off-road experience through the combination of two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack and a high-tech 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated to a 4:1 transfer case to deliver more than enough power to 37-in. tires wrapped around custom 17-in. “slotted mag” style wheels.  

The Jeep ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept’s custom interior features low-back bucket seats trimmed in leather. The rear bench seat was replaced with a four-point safety cage, and the rear cargo space houses a full-size spare tire just in case the trail gets a little too wild.  

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Concept

Following the positive reaction to the special-run, limited-edition Tuscadero exterior paint color that debuted in ’21 for Jeep Wrangler models, the Jeep design team decided to up the ante on thischromatic magenta color. The team drew a line in the Moab sand and decided it was time to flip the color’s perception and make it a lot tougher than expected.

Enter this special Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe concept with its legendary electrified off-road capability, unapologetic color palette and a powerful platform for any adventure.

The exterior of the Jeep concept boasts a pink-hued paint with Gloss Black accents sprinkled across the front grille and headlamp bezels. The signature seven-slot grille was borrowed from the new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary model, which sets off a custom hood graphic with a tone-on-tone print that fittingly ties into the interior theme.

Off-road capability has been increased with the addition of an adjustable AccuAir air suspension kit to allow ample clearance for massive 37-in. tires that are wrapped around custom 17-in. high-gloss black American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Borah wheels. Additional AEV pieces include front and rear bumpers, differential covers and a Warn Zeon winch.

Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept

The all-new ’23 Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer vehicles reinterpret their own legacies and take the premium SUV into uncharted territories of comfort and adventure. With this in mind, the go anywhere, do anything concept vehicle takes off-road exploration to the next level—and in true Grand Wagoneer style.

The Grand Wagoneer Overland concept leverages the all-new 3.0L Hurricane Twin Turbo 510 engine to lead adventure-seekers further off the beaten path. Delivering 510 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque, the powerful Hurricane engine offers premium performance while also delivering improved fuel economy versus many competitors’ naturally aspirated V-8 and boosted six-cylinder engines.

The overlanding-inspired concept boasts an incredible amount of appointments inside and out. The concept’s main feature is a custom RedTail Overland Skyloft affixed to the top of the Grand Wagoneer’s roof. The carbon-fiber constructed Skyloft unfolds in around 10 seconds from the inside by simply pushing up with one arm.

To accomplish the Skyloft’s integration, the design team began by removing the second- and third-row seats. The rear-most sunroof was repositioned to create a custom weatherproof, pass-thru entrance from the lower third-row seating area to the upper Skyloft level. A fore/aft sliding door and a small step, which also doubles as a usable table, allows for easy access. The Skyloft provides a climate-controlled oasis complete with a sleeping space for two people and enough windows to soak in even the most panoramic views.

While the Skyloft may be the optimal choice to take in a starry night, the main cabin space below also received plenty of attention to detail. Whether it’s to escape a quick downpour or change out of muddy hiking gear, the concept’s truck bed-lined cargo floor handles any outdoor element with ease.

To complement the Grand Wagoneer’s rear seat entertainment and other creature comforts, the cozy interior was appointed with two oversized beanbags, a plush throw rug, pillows and custom, ambient interior lighting. The spacious interior also provides ample storage for bikes and gear.

The exterior of the Grand Wagoneer Overland concept is painted in Industrial Green with Gunmetal accents. A massive Warn winch was added to the front grille and features two sets of custom laser lights for superior night-time visibility. A durable, black Rhino-lined roof has a subtle pop of orange color to pay homage to the countless amounts of outdoor gear used by overlanding enthusiasts.

Larger wheel openings and custom wheel flares, as well as a custom front chin and rear valance help complete the look, while also delivering aggressive approach and departure angles for superior off-road capability. The concept’s 35-inch tires wrapped around custom 18-in. wheels provide a natural 1.5-in. lift to the vehicle for added breakover and ground clearance.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure Concept

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Departure concept builds upon the open-air cockpit of the best-selling PHEV in America with innovative and conceptual items from the JPP by Mopar design team. Notably, the spare wheel and tire mount allows the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe to push the limits of available departure angles with 4x4 electrification.  

Riding on 17x8.5-in. Vintage Bronze KMC Impact OL wheels and 37-in. BFGoodrich tires, the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept features a JPP 2-in. lift kit with BILSTEIN performance shock absorbers. The BILSTEIN shocks use remote reservoirs to provide greater cooling capability for increased suspension travel and improved Jeep 4x4 off-road capability.

Protecting the seven-slot front grille first introduced on the ’23 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary edition is a custom-designed tubular grille guard measuring 4 ft.x1 ft. that folds down to create an innovative bumper bench, a perfect relaxation perch for two while out on the trails. Below the grille guard is a modified Rubicon bumper with a Warn winch.   

New, custom, flat-fender flares and wheel liners, designed specifically for larger wheel and tire combinations, provide additional clearance. The flat fender flares have integral removable daytime- running-light (DRL) covers for the off-road enthusiast who may require extra tire clearance for extreme off-road situations. This concept is the first 50-state-legal fender flare with OEM DRL and meets 50-state tire coverage requirements.  

The design team continues to explore customer needs by investigating additional trail lighting. The Wrangler 4xe Departure concept uses three concept header-mounted, 11-in. TYRI rectangular LED lights with custom brackets that mount to the backside of the windshield header. Each light easily pivots out of the way when the windshield is folded down. Illuminating the ground at all four corners are custom rock lights.

Custom rock rails with mounted slider tubes provide enhanced body protection and easier access to the elevated cabin, while JPP tube doors provide the ultimate open-air experience.

For added storage capacity, the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept features Molle panels that attach to the sport bar and the body tub to house additional trail-rated accessories that need a mounting point.

The design team used the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept to explore innovative options to mount the spare wheel and tire, while keeping harmony with other accessories. At the rear is a custom convertible tube gate that offers front- or rear-facing positions for the spare wheel and tire. When the spare is flipped outward, the system acts as a bed extender to provide more cargo space. When the gate is turned toward the cabin, the rear overhang is greatly improved for off-roading while the spare wheel and tire are safely secured. The convertible gate maintains a factory backup camera and CHMSL in either position.  

The rear cargo compartment features Jeep Rubicon trail rails with tie downs to store additional accessories, and a signature JPP all-weather cargo mat.

The Dark Harbor blue exterior on the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept is contrasted inside the cabin with the vivid chromatic seating surfaces. The design team uses an expressive color combination of light Acorn Squash Nappa leather contrasted with darker Carnegie Hall brown Nappa leather, accented with warm off-white Serafil stitching. The Dark Harbor blue color continues onto the instrument panel, which features various Vintage Bronze accents.

The Wrangler 4xe Departure concept also features a concept instrument panel accessory rail to mount phones or accessories for recording trail rides.

For the driver, stainless-steel JPP pedal covers include black rubber pads, adding plenty of traction to the accelerator and brake pedals. In addition, JPP door-grab handles provide easy entry and exit.    

The new JPP heavy-duty vinyl flooring system is available now for all production four-door (JL) Wranglers. With integrated Jeep floor drains it allows for easy interior cleaning.  

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Sideburn Concept

The Jeep Gladiator Sideburn concept, wearing Solar Flash Yellow, explores new tools designed for the burgeoning interest in off-road adventure.   

Powered by a 3.6L Pentastar V-6, the Gladiator Sideburn concept features a JPP 2-in. lift kit with BILSTEIN performance shock absorbers. The BILSTEIN shocks use remote reservoirs to provide greater cooling capability for increased suspension travel and improved Jeep 4x4 off-road capability.  

At all four corners, black HRE 17x9-in. FT1 six-spoke wheels ride on 37x13-in. BF Goodrich tires.

Protecting the seven-slot front grille borrowed from the ’23 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary edition is a custom-designed tubular grille guard measuring 4 ft.x1 ft. that folds down to create an innovative bumper bench. Below the grille guard is a modified Rubicon bumper with a Warn winch.  

Responding to customer feedback and debuting on a Gladiator Sideburn concept, the JPP by Mopar design team installed a pair of removable 11-in. TYRI rectangular LED lights to each of the roof panels, suspended by custom bracketry in the concept-light fairing. The light fairing is attached to each roof panel and features a quick disconnect.

A concept JPP Gladiator Sport Bar, made from lightweight carbon fiber and steel, enhances the space between the cabin and the bed with a design that features bed steps on both sides for easy access. The sport bar also features a mid-shelf with tie downs for portable storage totes. Each tote can be locked and secured via eight available tie-down loops. Four T-track rails on the upper portion of the sport bar enable easy installation of bike, kayak or other roof-mounted cargo systems.

The bed on the Gladiator Sideburn concept was created to further enhance the strong and lightweight Jeep design language, the bed features integral Molle panels above and behind the wheel flares for additional storage. Integral RotoPaX containers are specially designed for liquid storage during off-road adventures. Within the bed is a modified Mopar bed-mounted spare tire carrier that holds a 37-in. wheel and tire.

A custom tailgate carries the standard back-up camera, CHMSL and features three Molle-panel openings, along with a custom floating Jeep badge in the center opening.

The open-air feel of the Sideburn Gladiator concept is further enhanced by the available JPP half doors while JPP side steps and JPP grab handles assist with entry into the elevated cabin.

The open cabin features seats, armrest, shift boots, parking brake handle and half-door pull straps trimmed in a deep, dark, red-brown Vienesse Relicate Nappa leather with Soul-stopper thread. The thread accents continue onto the top pad of the instrument panel and steering wheel.  

Custom instrument panel bezels carry a 3-D topographical map of Moab scenery finished in matte-black base and gloss dark-silver trails. Accents throughout the cabin are finished in Atomic Silver matte paint.

Decorative, stainless-steel JPP pedal covers provide foot traction for feathering through the trails, and a concept JPP heavy-duty vinyl floor system (for JT Gladiator model) with integrated floor drains allows for quick interior hose-outs.

Jeep's Easter Safari Builds Go All Retro For 2024

W ith the 58th annual Easter Jeep Safari well underway in Moab, Utah, Stellantis has pulled the cover off of four brand-new off-road concepts. The lineup includes two highly-modified Wranglers, a big-tired Gladiator pickup, and a seriously retro take on the Grand Wagoneer , all of which take a look back at some of the Jeep’s greatest work for inspiration. Here’s what you need to know about these factory-modified wheelers.

Wrangler Low Down Concept

Jeep has built more than 100 of these custom 4x4s since 2008, but only a select few have managed to stick in the minds of the Jeep faithful. The new Rubicon 392 -based Wrangler Low Down concept pays homage to one of the most famous Easter Jeep Safari builds, the Lower 40 concept from 2009. That early build featured a V-8 engine swap under the hood, and made use of gigantic 40-inch rubber despite a stock ride height. The new truck is a bit more extreme, trading that old-school 5.7-liter V-8 for the potent 6.4-liter engine provided by the Rubicon 392. The new build also retains the stock suspension package from the Rubicon 392 model, but swaps out the stock Dana 44 axle for more robust Dana 60s with 5.38 gears. Those beefier axles help support the truck’s massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, which come installed on a set of 20-inch beadlock wheels. The stock fenders have been replaced with a set of flared carbon units, which help give the truck a purposeful stance. A Poison Apple Red paint job and a red-tinted bikini top are a nice nod to the original concept as well.

Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second Wrangler build looks even further back in brand history, paying respects to the early civilian model Jeep from the post-war era . Based on the 4xe hybrid model, this Willys Dispatcher Concept gets some old-school appearance tweaks, including custom steel bumpers at both ends. The hood also features stamped “Willys” branding, which it shares with the original seven-barred product. Upgraded Dana 50 axles with 4.70 gears help increase capability, as do the Super Traxion 36-inch tires. That rubber comes wrapped around retro-style steel wheels, which are finished in a cream hue. The SUV itself is finished in a bespoke shade of Element 115 Green paint, which is accented nicely by the blacked out windshield banner. The best looking part of this custom SUV is the interior, complete with distressed saddle leather and houndstooth inserts throughout. The headrests have been pulled from the seats to improve that retro appearance. It’s the sort of thing we’d love to see make its way to the production models, however unlikely. The throwback style Warn Winch is another nice touch and helps to round out the package.

Gladiator High Top Concept

The Gladiator High Top Concept is a bit less of an involved build, borrowing mostly from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog. Upgrades include items like an AccuAir air suspension system, which work with Dana 60 axles at both ends to support 4x4 endeavors. The suspension system is put to the ground via a gigantic set of 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s, which come wrapped around a set of 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. A set of flat fender flares and AEV bumpers ensure that the large rubber is covered and ready for road-use, while giving the pickup some additional flair. Out back you’ll find a truck bed storage system by Decked, which brings a bit of overlanding capability to the build. A Warn Winch and some rock slider steps have also been added should any off-roading adventures take a turn for the worse.

Vacationeer Concept

Rounding out the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari lineup is the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer Concept. The design is a clear nod to the original Wagoneer models, complete with the oh-so lovely wood grain graphics missing from the current production model. The woody look pairs very nicely with the Spearmint paint, which has slightly more white in the mix than the aforementioned Element 115 color. The wheel openings have also been massaged to make room for the larger 35-inch tires, which come wrapped around 18-inch Method Race wheels. A 1.5-inch suspension lift adds a bit of aggression to the stance, while bringing a bit more off-road capability to the table. The rear rows of seats have been removed in favor of a carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft, which serves as a passthrough rooftop tent for ideal camping conditions. Under the hood sits a high output variant of the Hurricane inline-six engine, which provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That said, the real highlight of this build is found on the interior, where Jeep enlisted the assistance of fashion designer Kiel James Patrick. The custom flannel seats feature famous Jeep models from years gone by, and fit with the theme perfectly. This is exactly how the Grand Wagoneer should have looked in production form, but we’ll settle for a concept like this one.

The Easter Jeep Safari runs through March 31st, 2024 in Moab, Utah. If you’re a diehard Jeeper, it might be worth the trek to lay eyes on these unique concept vehicles.

2023 Easter Jeep Safari Showcases Concepts with Wildly Diverse Powertrains

This year there's a 650-hp Wrangler EV, a plug-in-hybrid 1978 Cherokee, and a 470-hp V-8 Wrangler-turned-Scrambler.

This year's roster of custom-built and customized Jeeps includes a wildly diverse set of powertrains. There's a new-and-improved version of the all-electric Wrangler (dubbed Magneto) that now makes 650 horsepower. There's also a really rad 1978 Cherokee restomod that's been retrofitted with Jeep's 4xe plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Arguably the coolest concept is the neon green Wrangler Rubicon 392-turned-Scrambler, with a 470-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 beneath its Hot Wheels–like bodywork.

We've collected all seven of the 2023 Easter Jeep Safari concepts below and detailed some of their most interesting features.

Scrambler 392

This Sublime green machine started life as a four-door Wrangler Rubicon 392 , but it's been reinterpreted with the Scrambler ethos. The original CJ-8 Scrambler was Jeep's first convertible pickup truck. The cosmetic changes to the concept include custom carbon-fiber bodywork. Inside, the seats feature a blue plaid pattern with green stitching.

The new-age Scrambler rides on huge 40-inch tires mounted on 20-inch wheels. That setup is buoyed by a newly available air suspension (called AccuAir) that can be raised between 1.5 and 5.5 inches at any time via either a control switch inside or using a compatible smartphone device.

The mighty 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 is visible beneath the clear panel on the Scrambler's hood. The engine makes the same 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque as in the Wrangler Rubicon 392. The one we tested rocketed to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds .

1978 Cherokee 4xe

This concept will take Jeep fans back to the late '70s. The original SJ Cherokee debuted in 1974 as a two-door version of the Wagoneer, and this 1978 restomod revives the vibes of that era with its retro paint job, albeit on a heavily modified body. Its 17-inch "slotted mag" wheels are also appropriately old school, and they're wrapped with beefy 37-inch tires.

What casual observers might not expect with this vintage Jeep Cherokee is that it's a plug-in hybrid. That's right. It's been outfitted with the Wrangler's available 4xe powertrain, which pairs two electric motors with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. A couple clues to its hybrid nature are the blue front and rear tow hooks.

Mixing old and new inside the Cherokee concept, Jeep continues the brightly colored theme but retrofits interior bits from the modern Wrangler. The transplanted parts include the entire dash, the center console, and the seats covered in handsome brown leather.

Magneto 3.0

This year marks the third time the brand has featured its all-electric Wrangler at Easter Jeep Safari. Known as Magneto, the company says this will be its final appearance at the event, and version 3.0 gets myriad notable changes. Its electric motor still operates through a manual transmission, but peak output increases from 625 to 650 horsepower and torque also rises from 850 to 900 pound-feet.

Jeep also says it updated the Magneto's electric motor to be more efficient, citing a 20 percent increase in useable energy and range. Drivers can also now switch between the new high-output power settings or the previous 285 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Either way, the Magneto's movement can be further controlled with two selectable regenerative-braking modes as well as one-pedal driving.

Visually, the Magneto 3.0 is slightly different than before. Jeep says the doors are swept back an extra 6 inches, the B-pillar is relocated to accommodate a custom roll bar, and the windshield is more steeply angled. The paint job has also been revised to include red accents. Inside, the upholstery gets similar revisions, the floor is now a blue bedliner material, and the rear seats have been removed.

Grand Wagoneer Overland

This Grand Wagoneer isn't like others roaming mall parking lots. That's because Jeep designed this concept for overlanding, which should be evident by its chunky 35-inch tires and extensive auxiliary exterior lights—oh, and its massive rooftop tent. Power comes from the new high-output Hurricane engine, a 510-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six.

The tent on top of the Grand Wagoneer is a custom carbon-fiber structure known as the Skyloft from the brand RedTail Overland. Not only can it be assembled in mere seconds by hand, but it's climate-controlled and can sleep two people. Jeep says it also turned the Wagoneer's rearmost sunroof into a porthole to access the roof-mounted tent.

Stripped of its standard second and third rows, this Grand Wagoneer concept comes with a rear-seat entertainment system and space for passengers to relax among bean bags, throw pillows, and a plush carpet. The entire floor has been coated in the same material used for truck bedliners, so spills and things of that nature shouldn't be a problem.

Wrangler Rubicon 4xe

Jeep says people loved the pink limited-edition Tuscadero Wrangler so much that it wanted to do a concept that took that flamboyant paint job even further. The result of that can be seen here, with this new magenta-colored model.

Along with the eye-catching paint, this Wrangler Rubicon 4xe features Jeep's newly designed seven-slot grille, which debuted on the 20th Anniversary Editions . Its hood also has a unique decal with a two-tone appearance.

This purplish-pink Wrangler looks especially tough thanks to its 37-inch tires. They're mounted on 17-inch wheels from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), which also supplies its front and rear bumpers. If things get too sticky, there's a Warn Zeon winch to tow it to safety.

Gladiator Rubicon Sideburn

Jeep took the Gladiator pickup truck and outfitted it with what can best be described as a Swiss Army knife cargo bed and sport bar, which are both concepts from Jeep Performance Parts (JPP). Called the Sideburn, the pickup also has a tubular grille guard that's hinged at the front to fold down and become a bench. The roof-mounted lights are removable too, and the custom bracket supporting them can be quickly disconnected.

The Sideburn is painted Solar Flash Yellow, so it'll be hard not to spot on the trails. Jeep also fitted it with a set of 37-inch off-road tires and 17-inch HRE FT1 wheels—and a full-size spare is mounted on the modified tire-carrier in the box. The innovative sport bar that arcs over the back is made of carbon fiber and steel and incorporates steps on both sides.

The steps on either side of the Sideburn allow people easier access to the portable storage cases that are secured on the sport bar's mid-shelf section. Above that are four T-track rails designed to make it easier to mount bikes and kayaks on the roof. Thanks to Molle panels surrounding the wheel arches, there are even more storage opportunities (notice the white Rotopax fuel container seen in this photo).

Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure

Just like on the Gladiator Sideburn concept, the Wrangler Rubicon Departure has a front-hinged tubular grille guard that transforms into a bench. Jeep painted this Wrangler concept Dark Harbor Blue and slapped on a JPP 2.0-inch suspension lift as well as knobby 37-inch tires and pretty bronze 17-inch wheels. The tubular doors also contribute to the open-air vibe.

Arguably the most notable feature on the Departure concept is the reversible rear-mounted tire carrier. The structure was designed so that the spare can be located inside or outside of the Wrangler, with it improving the departure angle in the former configuration and freeing up cargo space and extending it in the latter. Jeep says the setup doesn't compromise the rear backup camera either.

Das Prinzip, aus einem Geländewagen mit langem Radstand einen Camper-Umbau zu machen, kennt man ja schon lange von Land Rover und Toyota. Aber bei den Amis ist das konstruktionsbedingt immer ein kleines Highlight.

Die populären Wrangler waren bisher für längere Campingtouren aufgrund des beschränkten Platzangebots eher ungeeignet. Aber seit 2018 bietet Red River Rigs Camping-Umbauten für den Jeep Wrangler JKU und JLU an. Durch einen Aufsatz, der kundenspezifisch angepasst und ausgestattet werden kann, wird ein Wrangler innerhalb von wenigen Tagen zu einem vollwertigen Offroad-Camper. Das Konzept wurde auf der Overland Expo West vorgestellt.

Das American Safari JXL Conversion Kit erweitert den Offroader um bis zu vier Schlafplätze, eine kleine Campingküche sowie ein voll ausgestattetes Badezimmer mit Toilette, Dusche und Waschbecken. Auch ein Tisch, Sitzgelegenheiten und jede Menge Stauraum können nach dem Umbau genutzt werden. Wenn du dich jetzt fragst, wie das alles in ein Fahrzeug von der Größe des Wrangler passen soll, bist du damit nicht allein. Hier ein paar Details:

• Durch den Umbau wird das Fahrzeug zusätzlich um 15 Zoll verlängert – das sind etwa 38 Zentimeter. Das klingt im ersten Moment nicht viel, verdoppelt aber den hinter den Sitzen vorhandenen Stauraum.
• Um den Aufbau optimal nutzen zu können, wird zunächst das Dachzelt schräg nach oben aufgeklappt. So entstehen zwei Schlafplätze direkt unter dem Dach. Zwei weitere Schlafplätze können im unteren Teil aufgebaut werden.
• Küche und Waschbecken befinden sich unter der oberen Matratze. Du stellst also das Dach hoch, stehst im ehemaligen Kofferraum, klappst die Matratze nach hinten und findest darunter den Gaskocher und das Waschbecken mit fließend Wasser. Ein Frisch- und Abwassertank werden ebenfalls integriert.

Red River Rigs setzt den Grundpreis für den Umbau bei USD 17.760 an. Günstig ist das nicht und zudem wird der Umbau derzeit nur in den USA angeboten. Took the Outlaw Trail through the rugged rolling hills of Sedona's historic ranch country. Our guide was very knowledgeable and had a great appreciation for the beauty of Sedona. It is highly recommended you visit Batam during the months of October to early December. The air is cool and dry and there are not yet many tourists (compared to the peak season of late December to early January). The period after school holiday from March to April is also a great time to visit as there are many festivals in and around Batam. 

Batam is a safe place to be in. Here and there there can be petty crimes such as pick pocketing, so beware of your belongings.
