This is a fabulous property! The ambiance is perfect. We loved the food which was consistently exceptional. The tent accommodation is wonderful and you hear the birds singing (and may hear your neighbours too!). The staff were so helpful too. The safaris were great and we saw a tiger in the wild!

We had a magic stay at Kaav Kabini. We stay 2 nights. Managing staff very helpful and very kind. This is a small and cosy property, we feel at home. Lovely contemporary place very well integrated in this natural area. The pool area is superb. Food is delicious, thank you again Chef and team. We had the possibility to reserve directly safaris (drive and boat). Wish we could come back again

A quaint property located right at the border of the national park. The forest views are stunning. Ensure you get a room overlooking the forest. The food was delicious made by chefs who are from the village. The array of dishes was an experience of its own! The best part of my stay was the staff. Kind, cordial and go out of their way to make your stay memorable. They helped me book all my safaris and made sure the entire trip was well organised.

We loved everything about Kaav. The whole experience starting from booking and confirmation, to the stay at the resort, the experiences planned for us till the checkout process - everything was perfect to the 'T'.
The hospitality at the resort was beyond amazing. The staff was very warm and catered to all our needs without asking. The food was delicious and the location was amazing. The room was as beautiful as in the pictures. What we loved most was the personal touch of preparing a bag for our safari and cycling, complete with shawls, maps, water bottles and what nots. They truly go above and beyond to make your stay the best.

The location is magical right next to the tiger reserve. You really feel that you are in nature. There is a area upstairs to sit, relax and look over the reserve. The staff are fabulous (a jeep safari is a must), the pool is beautiful, the food is good

Travelling from Canada to the Kabini resort was the a grand finale to our month Long travels there India. The many pictures of the resort and safaris speak for themselves. What you don't see from the photos are the many services provided by the very skilled and knowledgeable staff. From the moment we stepped into this tropical oasis, we were pampered with 5-star meals served in an open dining area where we were one with nature while enjoying our meals. Next, the naturalist wowed us with his expertise knowledge of the living forest and all that grows and breathes within it and surrounds it. From wilderness safaris, mini spider safaris, star gazing, owl hunts, coracle rides, photography lessons, this young man is as good as they get! Trust me, between the accommodations, staff, food, service, and ambiance, you will not be disappointed! Our midday swim in the beautiful infinity pool alongside the majestic banyan tree was the piece de resistance. Truly an experience that we never forget!

An idyllic resort with a very plush yet rustic experience of nature. They have 4 rooms and 2 tents overseeing the edge of the forests which makes it quite an exclusive property. With limited guests, the staff gives personal attention to each and every person staying at the resort. A spacious and well furnished view point on the second floor also doubles up as a get together area. We spotted a gaur (Indian bison) right from the viewing point. The food was excellent as was the welcome on arrival. Divya from Kaav showed us around the property and frequently checked on us if everything was in order. There are other activities like Safari (which they book for you but you have to intimate them in advance), cycling, boating, coracle rides and night sky viewing. Cycling and sky-gazing are free of charge. The tents and rooms were spacious, luxurious, had a good view but still was private. There is also a swimming pool and bonfire is made on request. Overall an excellent property.

Excellent resort, with awesome staff, chef, manager. Hospitality was great. They were very helpful. Tasty food and food menu was quite different from usual. They got us tea, snacks whenever we asked with smile. Safari, coracle ride, sky gazing,nature walk, cycle ride to backwaters, mini safari within property was all very well planned for us. On request they had even arranged dinner for us separately on sky deck for my husband's birthday which I am very thankful. Cake was delicious. Not to miss the tent stay was just wonderful. Overall wonderful stay, wonderful time we had. would love to visit again in other season. Thanks team!

Awesome place to stay, ambience is awesome, we had a very relaxing stay, food is superb, multiple varieties of food, which is always served on time, hospitality is great, staffs are always ready to serve your need with broad smile on their face. We went for cycling, coracle ride, jungle safari arranged by Kaav. They also varieties of spiders collection in the Kaav jungle, if you are dogs lovers, they have lovely dogs, man’s best friend will always bring smiles on your face. They have mini library which give insights to animal world, room is awesome with balcony view into the forest. We would like to visit again. Our rating 5/5.

We just stayed for 1 night and had an amazing stay. We went cycling in the evening which was an experience in itself. Stargazing to see planets and the milky way was something that we had not done before. Dinner was tasteful and healthy. Wake up calls in the evening and morning were accompanied with tea and coffee of choice. All in all should have stayed longer to also enjoy the lodge. But all the experiences, lunch, cycling, star gazing, dinner, Safari, and breakfast topped up with a big scoop of great hospitality made our stay sweet and something to always remember.

We had a great time, the place is amazing. One of the best places to stay at Kabini, we can say this because we have been visiting Kabini for the last 10yrs and this stay stands out. From food (appropriate as far as variety and very tasty), cleanliness, staff. Can't miss out mentioning the great time we had with the adorable Baloo and his parents Copper and Kashi and of course Juliet (Labs). Thank you Divya and Sujit (passionate and highly knowledgeable naturalist).

Stayed there for 2 nights in luxury tent. It was clean, spacious, and maintained in great condition. Food was delicious and we were asked prior hand what kind of food we would like, veg and non veg preferences. Staff was great too, waking us at 5 in the morning for safari with tea, fruits, and cookies. Their manager took it upon herself to see that we don't face any issues, and was vefy informative about the area. Followed proper covid guidelines too.

We went on 3 safaris.. Lucky to have seen Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Gaur, Sambar Deer, Chital Deer, Langur Monkeys, Mongoose, Wild Boar, Peacocks, Indian Roller, Cresent Eagle, Giant Malabar Squirrel, Indian Hare, Monitor Lizard.. Kaav is a beautiful place, we stayed in the luxury tent. It was amazing experience. The jungle safari is a must, preferably in morning as the chances to see tiger and leopard is more. Food was okayish. Staff is really helpful and polite. They have a pool but we never used it. Overall it was a great experience for couple as well as families.

Kaav team surprised me as they put customers at first. All meals were awesome and was really tasty. Peaceful stay to unwind, no television so you feel disconnected from your daily routine for sure. When you reach that space login to Wi-Fi provided at the resort. This property is near to a stunning valley, located next to the forest on one side and a calm village that coexist next to each other.

Kabini forest is a wildlife sanctuary located in Karnataka, India and is part of Nagarhole National Park. The park is located in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and stretches over 847 sq km. It is home to a variety of animals, such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and more. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to a beautiful Kabini river and tranquil backwaters, making it a popular destination for boat safaris.

Kabini forest, like BR Hills Tiger Reserve , was originally a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Mysore. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950s, and hunting was banned. Kabini has since become a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The types of safaris available in Kabini
Kabini offers a variety of safaris for visitors. Kabini forest consists of two zones, A and B. The following are some of the top things to do while you are here:
Canter bus safari
A budget-friendly way to explore Kabini’s forests is by canter bus safaris. Canter buses are large, open-windowed vehicles that can accommodate groups of people. On weekdays, safaris run from 6.30 to 9 in the morning and 3.30 to 6 in the evening. Over the weekend, the same safari is conducted in two batches, each taking 1.30 hours. Morning safaris are from 6 to 7.30 and then 7.30 to 9. Evening safaris run from 3 to 4.30 and then 4.30 to 6.
It is advisable to check the website for the most recent timings. It is necessary to book the canter bus safari online . Walk-in registration is accepted as long as seats are available. I prefer Canter buses over jeeps since they provide a better vantage point to observe wildlife and take photographs.
Arrive at the Kakanakote Safari Center at least 30 minutes before your safari time. In case you booked your safari online, you need to approach the booking counter to obtain your bus number and seat number.
Canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 610 + GST per person per safari on weekdays and INR 460 + GST on weekends.
- The mornings in Kabini are usually misty, so it is advisable to take a safari at 7.30 am on weekends.
- Canter buses operated by Karnataka Forest Department are not restricted to a particular zone. Based on the sighting of tigers or leopards at the time of your safari, they can cross the zone.
Premium Canter bus safari
With their premium canter bus, Kabini now offers 3-hour safaris every day. With its 2×1 seating arrangement, this bus offers more legroom and spacious seating. Due to its smaller seating capacity, this bus is less crowded. An important feature of the bus is its semi-transparent roof. Besides this, they have a large rear window that sometimes allows you to shoot wildlife that suddenly emerges from the bushes after you have left.
The premium canter bus cannot be booked online. You will need to arrive at Kakanakote Safari Center much earlier and try your luck with the counter booking. The safaris in this bus start at 6 in the morning and 3 in the evening every day. Safaris are scheduled to last three hours.
Premium canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 855 per person per safari.
Jeep safari (operated by JLR)
Taking a jeep safari in Kabini is an exhilarating way to explore the wilderness in a private or semi-private vehicle. The safaris are conducted by JLR, which provides well-maintained jeeps and experienced guides. They are typically scheduled for 2-3 hours in the morning and evening. A Jeep Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,800 + GST per person per safari, which is significantly higher than the canter bus. Because JLR has a limited number of jeeps, in-house guests are given first priority. Depending on available space, other visitors may be accommodated. A jeep can seat a maximum of ten people.
Jeep safaris start from Jungle Lodges and Resorts, about 12 km from Kakanakote Safari Center.
Van safari (operated by JLR)
There is a cheaper option to JLR Jeep Safari in Kabini. A Van safari is similar to a Canter bus safari offered by the Karnataka Forest Department from Kakanakote Safari Center. A Van Safari through JLR costs around INR 2,000 + GST per person per safari.
Note : Each JLR safari vehicle is assigned a specific zone. Vehicles assigned to Zone A cannot enter Zone B and vice versa.
Boat safari (operated by JLR)
Taking a boat safari in Kabini is a unique and serene way to discover the region’s stunning backwaters. Boat safaris are conducted by Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), providing an opportunity to observe the rich birdlife, crocodiles, and other aquatic creatures in their natural habitat. Nearest airport to Kabini is Mysore Airport, which offers limited connectivity. Another option is to fly into Bangalore, which is well-connected to both domestic and international flights. You can take a taxi or bus to Kabini, which is about a 4-hour drive from Bangalore. Another option is to take a train to Mysore, which is well-connected to major cities in India, and then continue the journey to Kabini by road.
What are the best places to stay during a Kabini safari?
There are a variety of accommodation options in Kabini , depending on your budget and preferences. You can choose from luxury resorts, mid-budget lodges, or eco-friendly homestays. Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari
Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari is a popular experience conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in Kabini river. The Karnataka Forest department operates two types of safaris in Kabini- one is the jeep safari and the other is boat safari in Kabini River. The boat safari lasts for close to 90 minutes and guests may see elephants mud bathing on the shores, several birds such as cormorants, cranes, darters along the river banks, crocodiles as well as snakes.
Kabini Boat Safari Timings: Boat Safari in Kabini river is done twice a day- 3.30 PM to 6.15 PM and 6.30 AM to 9.15 AM
Cost: Cost of a boat safari is included in the room rental paid by guests of Kabini River Lodge operated by Jungle Lodge & Resorts . For external guests a charge is payable, which may vary based on nationality (Indians/foreigners) and weekday/weekend. When you book a stay in any resorts in the Kabini area, your host will arrange for a boat safari for you. Slots will be limited on each safari hence advance booking is strongly recommended.
Note: Boat safari may be suspended during summer months when water level is too low or during rainy season when river may be overflowing.

Kabini is 80 kms from Mysuru and 240 kms from Bengaluru. Mysuru is well connected by air, rail and road network. From Mysuru Kabini can be reached by taxi.

Especially by those who have a love for wildlife and want to see these animals thrive in their natural habitats. This makes Africa, and especially South Africa, a great choice for a safari holiday!

A Safari holiday is a popular (and safe) way to see the incredible power and beauty of wild animals thriving in their natural habitat. Whether it is your dream to see the Big 5 up close, or just to absorb the magnificence of nature, a safari is a way to do it! These holidays often bring a renewed sense of respect and awe for wildlife and nature to those who experience these adventures.
What Makes Travel In South Africa So Special?
South Africa is not just a culturally diverse country, but destination wise as well! When travelling to South Africa you can find yourself on the beach in Cape Town one day and surrounded by wildlife in the Kruger National Park the next. It comes as no surprise that this country rich with experiences, had over 8.5 million tourists visiting in 2023.

But the Kruger National Park is not the only place you can admire wildlife like the Big 5, in luxury, in South Africa. In the Welgevonden Game Reserve lies Elephants Crossing Lodge. Where you can see not only elephants but lions, impalas, rhinos, and many other incredible animals and wildlife ! I had a chat with Bas Mullink, one of the lodge's founders about what goes on there.
The Reserve
Welgevonden Game Reserve is situated in the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere in Limpopo, South Africa. Walking on the 38,000ha private game reserve is not only the Big 5 but over 485 other animal and wildlife species. Practically guaranteeing that you would encounter wildlife on your safari there – which is not always the case. As many parts of Africa suffer from poaching, climate change, and threats against biodiversity.
Conservation
Welgevonden Game Reserve believes strongly that it is their responsibility to aid conservation, biodiversity, and the protection of the flora and fauna that thrive on their grounds. The Conservation Management team has continuous conservation research and development to ensure the biodiversity on the reserve. While the APU (Anti-Poaching Unit) is strong and willing to provide the animals with a safe space to roam and thrive.
Elephants Crossing Lodge
As I mentioned earlier, Elephants Crossing Lodge lies on a hillside within the northern area of the stunning Welgevonden Game Reserve. This lodge not only offers luxurious tented accommodation but also game drives with amazing guides and even has a private watering hole – where they all but guarantee you will experience beautiful wildlife encounters! You might even catch a glimpse of the animals roaming around the unfenced lodge while sitting in your private splash pool.
Zebras Crossing Lodge
Zebras Crossing Lodge is situated on open plains with a view of the Waterberg mountains. As this lodge doesn't focus on the Big 5, one could mountain bike, hike, or even swim in their private river among the passing zebras, giraffes, and many other animals. Perfect for adventurous animal lovers.
Who Are They?
Two sisters and their husbands share a love for adventure and wildlife. This love brought them all the way from the Netherlands to the beautiful flora and fauna in South Africa, where they opened two lodges to share the country’s beauty with other wildlife admirers. While Elephants Crossing Lodge lies in the Welgevonden Reserve, and their other lodge, Zebras Crossing lies in a 650ha private reserve in the Waterberg bushveld near Modimolle, Limpopo.

The lodges fully support all conservation efforts made by Welgevonden Game Reserve. For each guest payment, the lodge pays a percentage to aid the conservation efforts of the management team to protect and care for the biodiversity and wildlife on the Reserve. And if you ask me, creating a safe and beautiful place where people can admire wildlife in their natural habitat also contributes to the education and respect of animal conservation. Which is something they certainly do well!
