Links from Mail won't open in Safari

Quite often if I click on a link in an email from a mailing list, Safari says it can't find the server (see below). If I copy the link into Chrome it opens fine. Why?

Open Safari

Select Preferences under the Safari Menu

Click the Advanced Tab

Check the box at the bottom "Show Develop menu in menu bar"

Close the Preferences

Under the Develop Menu, choose "Empty Caches"

Wait about 5 minutes

Go back under the Preferences

Click the Privacy Tab

Click "Manage Website Data..."

Click "Remove All"

Quit and reopen Safari

Right. There are cached items that are causing this error. Clearing cache and cookies will get your browser to open links normally.

10 Ways to Fix Safari Not Working on an iPhone

Follow these simple troubleshooting steps to fix Safari if it isn’t working properly on your iPhone.

Safari is the native browser for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. It comes pre-installed on almost every Apple device, and it's designed to be fast and efficient for them. However, there are times when Safari doesn't work.

When this happens, it usually means there's a setting or software issue. There are even cases where you might not be able to access the internet at all on your iPhone or iPad. Luckily, there are a variety of things you can try to get Safari working again.

1. Restart Your Device

You hear it all the time—turn your device off and on again. While this may sound too simple to work, restarting your iPhone or iPad has been known to clear your usable memory, which can speed up Safari.

If Safari is frozen or just a blank white screen, restarting your iPhone or iPad can also fix these problems. Before you try anything else, just make sure you cover the basics.

2. Turn Off Safari Suggestions

Turning off Safari Suggestions is one of the simplest and most common fixes for Safari not loading or crashing on an Apple device. While we aren't sure why this works, many users have reported that turning this off fixes the problem.

To turn off suggestions, head to Settings > Safari > Safari Suggestions and turn this off. You can also turn off Search Engine Suggestions while you're there too, as some users reported this also fixes the issue.

Some users have also said that blocking Safari popups on your iPhone can improve the memory usage of Safari. So, you may also want to give this a try.

If this fixes your issue, then you're all set. If not, try the following steps.

3. Turn On Cellular Data for Safari

If you're frequently connected to Wi-Fi, you may have cellular data off for Safari to save internet data. While helpful, if your Wi-Fi isn't functioning right, connecting to cellular data could fix your issue.

To do this, head to Settings > Cellular > Safari and turn this on. If it was off, this was most likely the cause of your issue. Alternatively, you can turn off Wi-Fi if you're connected and just connect with cellular data. If you can connect this way, that means there's a network issue with your Wi-Fi network.

4. Edit Your Screen Time Settings

If you've ever changed your Screen Time settings or blocked certain websites through Screen Time, try turning these settings off. To block websites, you need to enable Content Restrictions which can inadvertently block websites you still want to use. If you can't load a link from an email or text message, this could also be a sign that content restrictions are on.

To fix this issue, head to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn this option off. If it was on, then this was most likely your issue. If it was off already, proceed to the next fix.

5. Clear All Safari's Data

If you frequently use Safari, you might have a lot of data stored within the app, making it fail to load correctly. This is especially true if you're using an iPhone or iPad with a lower storage capacity. If you get low storage notifications, this fix could resolve your issue.

To clear Safari's data, head to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data . This will erase all extra data in the Safari app. Some users report this works, but you'll need to do it often if you can't eliminate storage space elsewhere on your iPhone.

6. Update iOS to the Latest Version

Some users have reported that updating iOS resolves issues with Safari. Whether Safari isn't loading, is crashing, or just isn't connecting to websites, try updating iOS on your iPhone .

Apple does a great job of fixing widespread issues with iOS updates. So, if there is an issue that Apple is aware of, it could get fixed by a subsequent update.

7. Reset Your Network Settings

If you've had issues with your network before, like not getting service or pages timing out, resetting your Network Settings could help.

To reset the Network Settings on your iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Reset > Reset Network Settings . This will reset only your Network Settings and won't erase any other data on your iPhone.

After you finish this, try opening Safari to see if it's working again. If not, proceed to the next fix.

8. Reset to Factory Default Settings

If all else fails, you can try resetting your iPhone to the default settings. This will erase all the data on your iPhone, and you'll have to set it up from scratch. However, this is also a very effective way to resolve all kinds of software problems. To do this, head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Erase All Content and Settings .

After resetting to the default settings, test out the Safari app before you install your usual apps. If Safari is working then but stops working when a certain app is installed, that means the app installed is interfering with Safari.

If Safari isn't working when you have a fresh install, make sure you didn't restore a backup of your iPhone or iPad . If you restored a backup, there could be something interfering with Safari that transferred over. If you reset your device without a backup and Safari still doesn't work, you can try one of the two last troubleshooting steps.

9. Turn On JavaScript

JavaScript is on by default on most iOS devices. However, if you're having issues with Safari, it's likely that JavaScript is off. Sometimes, one might turn JavsScript off as some websites might not support it.

If you've turned JavaScript off or want to check if it's off and turn it back on, head to Settings > Safari > Advanced on your iOS or iPadOS device.

10. Use an Alternative Browser

If the above fixes didn't work, then unfortunately, there might be an iOS bug with Safari, and you'll need to wait for the next update and hope it's patched. Until then, you can try using an alternative browser to access the internet on your device. There are many great browsers available in the App Store that can cater to your needs.

Whenever I click a link in the Mail app, the link wouldn't work using Safari but would work on Edge. On 12.2.1. Is anything wrong with this?

I have been sporadically experiencing the same failure to open links in Safari. Irritating enough that I have switched the default browser as I research it online. Surprisingly there are not all that many complaints. I finally found "Private Relay" after an additional search (Sys Preferences -> iCloud/AppleID - Private Relay) but it was not enabled. I have been toggling on and off all the Security and Privacy settings in Safari but have not seen any change. Restarted the MBPro M1 16" yesterday but have not restarted it or Safari since making the changes. Still chasing the gremlin.... (naw - I have NOTHING better to be doing !!)  

Links are not Working in Safari on Mac, Fix

This article explains what you can do if you are unable to open website links in Safari on your Mac. Ideally, any links you click will open. However, sometimes, you may experience an issue where nothing happens when a link is clicked. And if you cannot open websites by clicking links, you will not be able to use them.

Likewise, you may also experience that links will only open if they are double clicked. And again, clicking once does not work. Furthermore, it appears that sometimes you may run into this problem on certain websites and sometimes this issue may occur on all websites you visit.

Safari may not work properly. For example, Safari may not respond sometimes. Like these problems, this link problem is also important. Luckily you can easily fix this problem.

Quit Safari

Simply restart Safari. This may fix your problem. You can quit Safari by going to Safari > Quit Safari. Alternatively, you can press Command-Q. And then open Safari and test to see if you can open links. Follow these steps If you see that Quit Safari is grayed out .

If you are unable to quit Safari, then try force quitting. You can force quit it by pressing Option-Command-Esc or going to the Apple menu > Force Quit.

Update your Mac to the latest version of macOS. Since Safari is also part of the macOS software, updating macOS will also update Safari to the latest version. You can check for updates by going to System Preferences > Software Update. And then, if there is an update, follow the onscreen instructions to update your Mac.

Your Safari extensions may cause this problem because one of your extensions may be causing a conflict. Turn off your Safari extensions to see if they are the problem. You can turn them off by going to Safari > Preferences > Extensions. Then deselect the checkbox. Repeat this step for every extension to turn them all off. After turning them off, open Safari and click a link. Does it work? If the answer is yes, then one of your extensions are causing this problem. You can then re-enable an extension and test to determine which extension is causing this issue. Furthermore, ensure that all of your extensions are up to date.

Reset Safari

If you are still having this issue, reset Safari and then try again. By resetting Safari, we mean (a) removing history (b) removing cookies and website data (c) clearing cache files. Here is how:

Remove history

When you do this, Safari will delete your browsing history. Here is how:

• In Safari, click Safari and Clear History (or alternatively, History > Clear History).
• Choose “All History”.
• And click the Clear History button.

Remove website data

• In the Safari menu, click Safari and Preferences.
• Click the Privacy tab.
• Click the Manage Website Data button.
• Then click Remove All. This will clear all of the sites’ cookies and stored data.

Delete Safari’s cache

• From Safari’s menu bar, click Safari > Preferences.
• Click Advanced.
• And check the “Show Develop menu in menu bar” box.
• Exit Preferences.
• Now, a new menu item will appear, Develop.
• Click Develop and select Empty Caches.

Wish all of these would work for me. I have High Sierra but my one site occasionally works but lets me do limited things on it. (It is a popular automobile magazine site). it is the only site that does this. This happened a month ago and it mysteriously came back…then a couple of weeks later froze again. I’ve even changed mouse devices but nothing helps. I’ve used both private and regular modes too. Now, I did find that on this old Mac (High Sierra) I am having these problems but not on my iPhone 11. Is is possible the site is upgraded and no longer works with old OS like my High Sierra? My iPhone OS is up to date. Thanks.

Troubleshooting Tips for Fixing Can’t Open Links in Email on Mac

If you’re using a Mac and having trouble opening links in emails, don’t worry – you’re not alone! Many Mac users have experienced the same issue. Fortunately, thre are some simple steps you can take to remedy the problem.

The first thng to try is to ensure that the correct internet browser is set as your default. Troubleshooting Hyperlinks Not Working in Mac Mail

Opening Email Links in Chrome on Mac

To make sure email links open in Chrome on your Mac, you will need to change the default browser setting. To do this, go to your System Preferences and select the “General” tab. Under the “Default Web Browser” section, select “Google Chrome” from the drop down list. This will make it so that all links in emails (including webpages and images) open in Chrome when clicked.

Changing Open Link Settings

In order to change your Open Link settings, you’ll need to go to Settings > Apps, and then tap on the “General” tab. From the Default app menu screen, scroll down to the bottom and tap on “Opening links”. Under Installed apps, select the app you want to modify the setting for. Finally, tap (or toggle on) “Open supported links” in order to apply your changes.

• Simultaneously hold your power and side buttons.
• Wait until the power off screen appears.
• Use your finger to drag the slider and turn off your iPhone.

Manage Your Safari App

You’ll need to open your Safari app settings and change a few things.

For example, you may need to enable JavaScript or clear your website data.

Enable The JavaScript Feature

If you have JavaScript disabled on your Safari app, you won’t be able to open links while you use that device. JavaScript is how you use interactive features on your Safari browser.

• Go to the settings menu on your iPhone
• Find the Safari app and hold it down with your finger
• Enter the advanced settings
• Scroll to the bottom of your screen to find your JavaScript switch
• Tap the switch to turn JavaScript on

Clear Safari Website Data

To clear the website data and cookies from your Safari app on an iPhone, you need to go into the same settings menu discussed in the section above.

Click that option, and you’re clear.

Restart Your Wi-Fi Router

Sometimes the Safari application isn’t why you can’t open links using Safari.

If you have a poor Wi-Fi connection , this can be a huge factor as well.

Managing your Safari data, restarting your Wi-Fi routers, and checking for software updates are excellent ways to open links in Safari again. Most Wi-Fi issues are resolved with a router restart.

You can restart your Wi-Fi routerby using your Wi-Fi companies’ app and restarting it remotely or by unplugging it from the wall and waiting a few minutes.

It takes up to 10 minutes to restart.

Check For Software Updates

If you don’t update your app and device software often, you can experience plenty of bugs, including but not limited to your iPhone not opening links in Safari.

Unfortunately, you may need to check for software updates on your iPhone and your Safari app to resolve this issue.

You can also automatically update both this software by changing your settings.

iPhone Updates

You can check for iPhone updates by looking in your device settings menu.

Your iPhone will alert you if you’re overdue for an app update. As long as you have the App Updates feature turned on.

Your iPhone will prompt you to update your device immediately or set a more appropriate time.

This way, you don’t have to worry about the update interrupting your day.

Most people install iPhone updates overnight so that they wake up and don’t have to worry about it.

Safari Updates

Fortunately, while you update Safari, you can use an alternative application to look up things on your iPhone.

Peeking at the URL of a link that you're about to open is a good way to make sure the URL is what you expect and not a trick. Here's how to preview links in Safari for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Popular desktop web browsers have featured URL status bars for decades. But Safari for Mac doesn't enable one by default. If you want to quickly check the URL of a link, you can do it by enabling the status bar.

First, open the Safari app on your Mac. Click the "View" section in the menu bar and choose the "Show Status Bar" option.

With this enabled, when you hover over any link, you will see its full URL address in the status bar in the bottom-left corner of the page.

If you ever want to disable this link preview, click View > Hide Status Bar in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Unlike the Mac, Safari on iPhone and iPad doesn't have a status bar. But it does let you peek into the page that you want to open. You can tap and hold any link to load the page in a pop-up preview window. If you don't like the full preview, you can switch to only viewing the URL (like Safari on Mac).

To get started, open a page in Safari on your iPhone or iPad. Tap and hold any link on the page.

If you're running iOS 13 , iPadOS 13, or higher, you will see a thumbnail preview of the page pop-up. To preview the URL instead, tap the "Hide Preview" button located at the top of the pop-up window.

The thumbnail will disappear and you'll see the URL listed in the box. If it looks safe and you want to open the page from this pop-up, tap the "Open" button in the menu list below the preview pop-up.

If you want to get the thumbnail peek back later, just tap and hold a link again and select "Tap to show preview" at the top of the pop-up window.

Keeping an eye on URLs is just one more way that browsing with more knowledge will help you avoid web-based scams and keep you safer on the web.

My Outlook doesn’t load or open my email on Safari

Hi, as mentioned in topic, my outlook just keeps hanging at this icon, been like this since last week and tried all methods Apple Support asked me to but still to no avail.

Anyone knows how to fix this?

Please confirm if Outlook won't open only when using safari and works well with other browsers i.e Chrome, Edge?

May you please confirm that it was working before and if so did you make any recent change in your mac settings?

If it used to work, please try to reset your browser settings:

#Clear history ( open safari > clear history)

#Clear the cache ( safari > preferences > advanced > show develop menu > empty cache )

#Delete cookies( safari > privacy > Manage cookies > remove )

# If not enough, you can delete extension and auto fill data.

May you please make sure your apple software is up to date, it includes updates for safari too.

Please try to see if Outlook will load when using a private window, in Safari please do the following:

# Choose File > New Private Window

#Choose Safari > Preferences, then click Privacy.

#Click Manage Website Data.

#Select the affected website from the list shown.

#Click Remove.

#Click Done.

#Open Outlook again in a non-private browser window.

If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you can't load a website or webpage, or Safari quits unexpectedly, follow these steps.

Connect to a different network

Try to load a website, like www.apple.com , using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, connect to a different Wi-Fi network , then load the website.

If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), check your VPN settings . If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.

Restart your device

Turn off your device and turn it on again.

Restart your iPhone

Restart your iPad

Restart your iPod touch

Clear website data

You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance.

Go to Settings > Safari.

Tap Clear History and Website Data.

Tap Clear History to confirm.

Turn on JavaScript

Turn on JavaScript if it's not already on.

Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced.

Turn on JavaScript.

Get more help

If the issue continues and only affects a certain website or webpage, check if you have Private Relay turned on. You can temporarily turn off Private Relay in iCloud Settings . If Safari still doesn't load websites and you tried all of these steps, contact the website developer for more help.

View, manage, and install add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

When you install and use an add-in, it adds custom commands and extends the features of your Microsoft 365 programs to help increase your productivity.

Note:  This article only applies to add-ins in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. For guidance on how to view, install, and manage add-ins in Outlook, see  Use add-ins in Outlook .

View installed add-ins

You can directly install add-ins from this page or select  More Add-ins  to explore.

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select the  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to view the details for and right-click to select  Add-in details  option.

Install an add-in

Tip:  If you selected  Home  >  Add-ins , directly install popular add-ins from the menu that appears, or select  More Add-ins to view more options. 

Select  Add  from the add-in you want to install.

Manage installed add-ins

To manage and view information about your installed add-ins, perform the following:

Select  File > Get Add-ins .   Alternatively, select  Home  >  Add-ins > More add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select the  My Add-ins tab.

Select  Manage My Add-ins . This opens the Office Store page in your preferred browser with a list of your installed add-ins.

Remove an add-in

To remove an add-in you installed, follow these steps.

Select  File  > Get Add-ins . Alternatively, select  Home > Add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to remove and right click to select  Remove  option.

Note:  Add-ins that appear in the  Admin Managed  section of the Office Add-ins dialog can only be removed by your organization's administrator.

Cancel an add-in subscription

To discontinue your subscription to an add-in, do the following:

Open the Microsoft 365 application and select the Home  tab.

Select  Add-ins from the ribbon,   then select  More Add-ins .

Select the My Add-ins tab   to view your existing add-ins.

Select  Manage My Add-ins .

Under the Payment and Billing section, choose Cancel Subscription .

Select  OK ,   then Continue .

Once you've cancelled your subscription, you should see a message that says "You have cancelled your app subscription" in the comments field of your add-in list.

Manage an add-in's access to your devices

Note:  The information in this section only applies to Excel on the web, Outlook on the web, PowerPoint on the web, and Word on the web running in Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

When an installed add-in requires access to your devices, such as your camera or microphone, you will be shown a dialog with the option to allow, allow once, or deny permission.

If you select  Allow , the add-in will have access to the requested devices. The permission you grant persists until you uninstall the add-in or until you clear the cache of the browser where the add-in is running.

If you select  Allow Once , the add-in will have access to the requested devices until it's relaunched in the browser.

If you select  Deny , the add-in won't be able to access the requested devices. This persists until you uninstall the add-in or until you clear the cache of the browser where the add-in is running.

If you want to change an add-in's access to your devices after selecting  Allow  or  Deny , you must first uninstall the add-in or clear your browser cache.
