Horse riding safari day tour

Ever wanted to horse ride in the African bush? Then this horse riding safari day tour from Johannesburg is the perfect choice of experience. Join us as we take you on a magical 3.5-hour horse ride in the bush where you will get to see a variety of wild animals from zebra, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck and many more. The ultimate African horseback adventure for those of you with just a day to spare.

Horse riding is our absolute passion.  There is no better way to explore the African bush than from the back of a horse. Let us handle all the logistics for you. This day tour from Johannesburg will afford some spectacular game viewing from the saddle of a magnificent beast we all know so well-a horse. You will become part of a herd of grazing zebra or a towering giraffe as you creep up silently into their world. And being on a horse seems to be a great advantage. Being grazers themselves, maybe there is some sort of silent brotherhood among the animals we are totally unaware of. Be that as it may, we love it!! It allows us to get up close and personal with the wild animals of Africa.

Never ridden a horse before?

No worries. The horses are well trained, forward going and super friendly. So not only is this horse-riding safari superb for experienced horsemen but it is also the perfect place to try out your first horse riding experience.  guide specializes in teaching novices the art of riding a horse . It is way easier than you think.

How long is the ride?

The duration of the horse-riding safari is approximately 2 hours.

How far is the drive from Johannesburg?

The drive takes about 90 minutes from Johannesburg . We head north past Pretoria and head in the direction of a small diamond mining ton known as Cullinan.

When is the horse riding safari day tour takes place?

Our horse-riding safari tours from Johannesburg run from Tuesday to Sunday. The pickup time from your hotel is 6:30 am. ( give us time to get through traffic and enjoy a cup of coffee before we head on out into the wild African bush)

What is the minimum age?

We have capped the minimum age at 12. However, we do allow kids from say 7 years old only if they have had previous experience riding horses .

What is the maximum weight allowed?

Although the horses are strong, we have limited the weight that you can be to a maximum of 95kg (210 pounds for the more Imperialistic types our there).

What are the minimum and maximum group size?

The minimum group size is 1. The maximum is 10. If you are a solo traveler, please give us a shout via our online chat or email to see if we can slot you into an existing tour. As mentioned, the maximum group size is 10. It is not that we don’t have enough horses , it’s because we want to enhance the overall horse-riding safari experience. Too many people and we lose the intimacy of the tour .

What type of clothing should I wear on horse riding safari day tour?

If you have ridden a horse before you would probably have learned that short pants are a big ‘NO NO’. The same applies to this day tour . We understand- You are in Africa and want to sport the new stylish safari shorts you bought at the duty-free shop. Well, a word of advice. DON’T. It is best to wear long pants/jeans. The resulting effect of wearing shorts is an NSHSR. Or for the acronym lacking traveler like me- the “nasty stylish horse safari rash”.

What if I can’t keep up with the group?

Stress, not young Skywalker. We have enough guides on the safari so the good riders can have the chance to jump, gallop and have lots of fun whilst not putting pressure on the novices.

Our driver will meet you at your hotel for a complimentary pick up at 6:30am. We then take the 90-minute drive north past the city of Pretoria towards what is know as Cullinan. The venue for this incredible horse-riding safari from Johannesburg tour is held at Horseback Africa.

Once we arrive, we enjoy a cup of coffee and meet the horse-riding guide who will be taking you on the tour.

The guide will chat to each guest to determine your horse-riding skills and then make sure you are paired with the correct horse for the day. We will also take you through an extensive briefing on what to expect on the ride and the safety protocols. This usually takes about 45 minutes depending on the experience of the group.

The safari lasts between 2 and 2.5 hours where you will get to view some of the wild animals that live on the reserve. These include giraffe, zebra, kudu, waterbuck and the occasional air hostess.

We should be done with the safari ride by about 11:30am. We then take the opportunity to chill out with a cold beverage under the trees and reflect on the experience. We then treat you to a wild side pizza cooked to perfection in the wood fired oven.

At 1pm, we start our journey back to Johannesburg. We should have you back in your hotel by about 2:30pm.

  • Hotel pick up from any location within Johannesburg.

  • 3.5-hour safari horse riding experience with our expert specialist guide.

OUR RIDING POLICY + EXTRA DETAILS

There is no better way to savour the Waterberg and experience its unparalleled wildlife population than on horseback. Our aim is to give you a fun-filled riding safari of a lifetime. However, safety is of paramount importance and you will be required to sign an indemnity form which includes certain guidelines while out on horseback. You must be fully aware and understand that there are risks involved when around horses, in riding generally, and in visiting and staying in areas of Africa due to the presence of wild animals. By signing our indemnity form you are confirming that you are riding on our safaris entirely at your own risk and that you have adequate insurance for all eventualities (ensure your insurance policy covers riding safaris and medical evacuation). It is compulsory to wear a riding helmet and although we have a selection of sizes, we do recommend that, if you have your own well-fitted hat, to bring it with you.

If you plan to spend many hours in the saddle, we recommend that you do some riding prior to your visit, in order to avoid aching muscles. We do have bumnahs available in our shop, or alternatively you can bring your own.

Both Mclellan and English saddles are available and each guest will receive a water bottle which fits into a bottle holder attached to the saddle. We do recommend bringing bum-bags to carry items such as phones and cameras. A list of recommended clothing and other items to bring can be found on our information page.

Ant’s Horse Safaris caters to all levels of riders, from the complete beginner to the most experienced, and riding lessons are also available. We take all ages, however, children under the age of 4 can only enjoy short pony rides around the lodge rather than riding out in the bush.

We have a weight limit of 110 Kgs (17 stone or ~ 242 lbs).

We take a maximum number of 6 guests out on any ride. Different riding abilities will not be mixed unless they choose to do so. The duration of each ride is determined by you as a guest and full day rides are available.

Out in Africa Encounters

ABOUT OUT IN AFRICA ENCOUNTERS

Our horse safari groups are small, and we ensure personal attention is given to our guests. We choose our camping locations for their natural beauty and ambience, enhancing the natural surroundings for a romantic feel. Lanterns and candle light set the scene where nature and an “old Africa” feel does the rest. Set near natural rock pools or open plains, our fly camp offers comfort in a setting where you are one with nature. Our partnering lodges allow for diversity and comfort while on safari, with exceptional standards and great game viewing in their surroundings. Out in Africa Encounters was started in 2012 and has stayed true to the concept of providing a wilderness experience without having to “rough it”. A feminine touch prevails and attention to detail can be noticed throughout the experience. We make sure that every day is special, discovering new areas, terrain and wildlife.

This tour gives you a chance to follow the path of the wildebeest migration through the famous Maasai Mara. Some of my most exciting safari memories were made in the Maasai Mara, and I highly recommend it !

While the peek of the migration takes place roughly from July to October, animals are moving all year long . Riding across the savannah among the animals, with no sounds of vehicles getting in the way, is a remarkable experience.

You’ll even cross the Mara River as the wildebeest do – unless, of course, it’s in full flood!

You’ll take daily rides in the Masai Mara , picnic in idyllic spots, and spend blissful evenings listening to the sounds of Africa. Cozy up on a comfy mattress and linens in camp and wake up refreshed.

African Horse Safaris: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: are horse safaris safe.

A: Yes . You might wonder, what happens should you come across a predator, such as a lion, while on horseback? While this very well may happen, horses are much larger than a lion’s usual prey.

Plus, the horses you’ll be riding are very used to the types of wildlife you’ll be seeing. Spooking isn’t an issue. As well, your guides are well-trained in how to handle any situation you might come across. No worries!

Q: What is the best month for an African safari on horseback?

A: Generally, the months between June and October are ideal. This period marks the dry season, which is associated with excellent wildlife sightings. With thinner foliage and shorter grass, animals have fewer hiding spots.

Also, during the dry season water sources are limited, making animals’ movements more predictable. But I’ve gone on safaris at all different times of the year, and I’ve never been disappointed.

Q: What time of year is cheapest for safari?

A: Shoulder season can be a less expensive time to go on a safari. This is roughly from November and December, between falls between the rainy and dry seasons. Wildlife viewing is still fantastic, fewer people are around, and you could get some good deals on safaris.

Q: Is Kenya or Tanzania better for Safari?

A: While you can’t go wrong with either option, Kenya does tend to experience a larger influx of tourists. If you prefer a more “wild” safari with fewer people around, Tanzania may be a better choice for you.

Q: How far in advance should you plan a safari?

A: If you plan to travel during high season (aka. dry season, June-October) and want your choice of experiences, advanced planning is important. Try to book your safari at least 9 months to a year before you’d like to start your journey.

Q: What do you wear on a horse safari?

A: If you are going on a multi-day horse safari, gloves, jodhpurs, short chaps, and short boots are a good idea. Some of this may be provided for you, as a helmet will – be sure to check with your tour provider before you pack. Jeans are fine for a day safari.

Be prepared for cool mornings with a fleece and knit hat. Stick to neutral colours that blend into the bush, avoiding dark and bright colours that attract mosquitoes and tsetse flies.

Q: How does a horse safari impact the environment and local communities?

A: Many horse safari operators in Africa are committed to eco-friendly practices and community involvement. Horse safaris typically have a low environmental impact compared to vehicle safaris.

As well, some safari operators support local communities through employment opportunities and contributions to conservation efforts.

Q: What is the first rule of safari?

A: The most important thing to remember when on safari is to be aware. You’re in a place where the wildlife rules the landscape. If you get distracted and do something you shouldn’t, like keep food in your tent, your holiday may take a turn for the worse.

Did sub-Saharan Africa have horses?

Yes . Sub-Saharan Africa had horses, but their presence was limited by geographical and environmental factors, such as the tsetse fly, which spreads diseases harmful to horses. Horses were introduced into North Africa by ancient civilizations and gradually spread southward.

Summing It Up: Best Horseback Safaris in Africa

If you want to experience a unique form of safari in Africa, then a safari on horseback is the perfect choice. You’ll revel in the quiet of game viewing without the sound of an engine, just the sound of your horse’s hooves as you ride through the bush.

Feel a part of the wild, with the heat of the sun on your skin and the breeze in your hair. Horse riding safaris offer a truly immersive and unforgettable way to explore the beauty of Africa’s wildlife and landscapes.

Happy travels!

TOUR REVIEWS

” I had an amazing time on the working vacation in South Africa. Traci and her family, the owners of the business, were beyond welcoming. I was there during Christmas and we celebrated with the whole family. I met other volunteers from all over the world, had the most spectacular wildlife sitings, and rode a wide variety of wonderful horses. If you are looking to go on a horse safari on a budget, especially if you are a student or just finished school, this is the best opportunity. African Horse Safari made the booking process easy, so thank you! Arielle Smith Working Holiday, South Africa

SAMPLE ITINERARY

**Weather permitting, the weekly schedule will combine equestrian with nature, where volunteers will either be at the stables or in the bush.

Wednesdays will provide volunteers with an opportunity to experience one of the various excursions nearby and on Thursday volunteers can spend time helping with local outreach programmes and NPO’s such as Nourish and Hoedspruit Animal Outreach. Weekends will include dinner in town or a night at the local bar for a party as well as an awesome social braai/barbecue around the fire.

A fair amount of free time is also made available, which you can use either to catch up on their personal requirements such as Facebook, Skype etc., or simply to take in the beautiful sights and sounds of your surroundings.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Each day is different at a South African stable yard! This a sample of what your day might be like:

• Wake up in your bush camp and grab a quick breakfast before walking to the stables • Once arrived at the stables, Shannon will brief the volunteers on the day’s activities: horses that need working and jobs that need doing – each day is different. • Help with grooming and taking horses out to paddocks. • Help tack up any horses needed for lessons or trails. And assist visitors with mounting and getting settled on their horses. • Depending on the day, your morning riding may vary from joining as back-up on a trail ride, having a jumping or flatwork lesson with Traci, schooling a horse yourself or joining a trail with some of your fellow volunteers. • After your ride you may need to help with some yard work like cleaning tack or water troughs ,or help fill hay nets • Soon enough it’ll be lunchtime at the club house. • After lunch you may have another ride (weather dependent) before helping to bring the horses back in from the paddocks and settling them for the evening. • Enjoy some downtime a the African Dream House before an evening game drive where you could be lucky enough spot any of the antelope, elephant, leopard, lion, rhino or hyena that roam the reserve. • After the game drive , grab a well-deserved shower before heading to the kitchen where you will have access to the well-stocked pantry to conjure up your dinner which you can enjoy with your new friends under the beautiful African stars. • When you’re ready, curl into bed! Tomorrow will be another busy day at the stables.

EQUESTRIAN / STABLES

A few skills volunteers will be exposed to are as follows:

  • General Horsemanship
  • Stable Management
  • Basic Veterinary
  • Basic horse anatomy
  • Tack fitment and care
  • Riding lessons including show jumping and dressage
  • Trail riding among wildlife
  • Natural Horsemanship

HORSEMANSHIP & HORSE CARE

You will be volunteering at a working South African stable yard, situated within a wildlife estate in the African bush. The yard offers riding lessons and livery to locals, and trail rides to tourists in the area. You will help Traci, Shannon and the permanent staff with the daily care of over 30 horses. Traci and Shannon are a brilliant mother-daughter team with a vast amount of equine knowledge which they love to share with their volunteers. You are guaranteed to learn plenty form this duo and their team. Activities may include feeding and grooming horses, helping with basic veterinary treatment where required, taking horses to and from paddocks, lunging, tacking up and helping trail riders onto their mounts. Every so often you may be cleaning tack and paddocks. Your visit may coincide with a show hosted on the property in which case you’ll help with the set-up but also have the opportunity to compete!

HORSE RIDING

Riders of all levels are welcome to volunteer. Traci is a fantastic teacher and will be able to help hone your skills, at whatever level you are. You will have the opportunity to join flatwork and jumping lessons in the large, well equipped arenas on the property. You may join a guest trail ride as back up or go riding through the bush with a bunch of other volunteers, amongst zebra, giraffe, warthogs, kudu and a host of other wild animals (There are no predators, elephants or buffaloes in the reserve that you will ride in) Another highlight is taking the horses to a nearby dam for a cool off in the dam if there has been enough rain! We’re not sure whether horses or the riders enjoy the swim the most! It is so much fun.

ENVIRONMENTAL / BUSH

The main objective is to create a love and an awareness of the environment, with conservation as the main drive. Volunteers have the optunrity to do:

  • Game Drives in the Big 5 game reserve
  • Night Drives to see nocturnal animals
  • Guided Bush Walks
  • Environmental Education
  • Basic Reserve Maintenance

LIVING IN THE BUSH

You will be staying in a wildlife estate just outside Kruger. You will have plenty of opportunities for game drives searching for exciting animals from your open game viewing vehicle. Your guide, Ryan, has a wealth of bush knowledge and will be able to teach you interesting facts about the ecology of the area. Elephants and lions are often spotted on game drives and this is always the highlight of the week! While the wildlife estate that you’re staying in doesn’t have these bigger creatures, you’ll often find the kudu, zebra, and waterbuck around the property and even in the horse paddocks!

COMMUNITY & OUTREACH

The stables are also actively involved in local outreach programs helping with community feeding schemes and animal protection.

ADDITIONAL EXCURSIONS

Besides the day to day activities which make up the programme, you will be given enough free time to explore the many beautiful spots in the area, including the Blyde River Canyon (the largest green canyon in the world), the world famous Kruger National Park, God’s Window in Graskop and many more. Other excursions include hiking along courses of waterfalls and visiting one of the many animal rehabilitation centres in the area.

THE ACCOMMODATION

African dream house.

You will be staying with the other volunteers at a newly built volunteer house which is a 2 minute walk from the stables. There are two beds in each room with an ensuite bathroom. Your room is equipped with fans, sockets to charge all your electronics, and a small storage cabinet for your belongings. The house has Wi-Fi so you’ll be able to keep in touch with friends and family back home. The kitchen is stocked with fresh produce and pantry ingredients for you to make your own breakfasts and dinners in the fully equipped kitchen. Lunch is supplied at the stables daily. You’ll be able to shop at the local supermarket in Hoedspruit for any of your own extra snacks and drinks, and often Friday’s will be take away pizzas in the bush! There is a lovely pool next to the veranda space which is essential for cooling off after a hot dusty day (it’s equally good for warm midnight swims!) The outside are is complete with a dining area, fire pit and lounge. Here you can enjoy a meal or simply spend your time relaxing with a book or sitting around a campfire, while a variety of wildlife wanders by.

THE DESTINATION

This programme is situated in the Lowveld of the Limpopo Province of South Africa on the outskirts of the tourist town, Hoedspruit (430km north east of Pretoria and in close proximity to the Kruger National Park).

The Equestrian centre is situated within the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, which is a 420 hectare nature reserve. This is the estate upon which you can ride and is home to giraffe, zebra, kudu, warthogs, impala and many other types of antelopes and birds. No elephant, lion or rhino.

Enjoy the traverse rights held by the programme, on adjacent nature reserves which are part of the Greater Kruger and are home to the BIG 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo), as well as many other animal species. During the project, you will go on game drives and night drives in the wild to expose yourself to as much wildlife possible in this reserve.
