ACTIVE AND FUN

It seems that the destiny of the centennial palm grove, made up of about four thousand trees and known as Los Leones or The Lions, in reference to the two sculptures at its entrance, was preordained.

This was the location selected to establish the Rio Safari Elche Park in 1983, by the CV 865 road which links Elche, which is nine kilometres away, and Santa Pola, just four kilometres away.  

A Hundred Species

Rio Safari Park are specialists in rearing and caring for wild and exotic animals. Sea lions, antelopes, ostriches, bisons, boa constrictors, zebras, chameleons, cockatoos, chimpanzees, crows, llamas, jaguars, dromedaries, hippos and giraffes may be found here amongst almost a hundred species and nearly 800 animals.

To enjoy their unique company a guided tour by train may be taken around the park. There are also various shows to enjoy including the sea lions, with the possibility of bathing in their company and the guacamayos.

Rio Safari Elche, through its charitable foundation, has developed a therapeutic programmes involving sea lions, designed for people with disabilities.

Some highlights of the Rio Safari Park are the reptile cave, where the habitats of reptiles and amphibians are recreated, the aviary, the crocodile farm and the chimpanzee island with more than 1,000 square metres of open space, with vines, rocks and hammocks as well as the farm school, with painting, bread baking and recycling workshops. Young children may get to know the little goats and lemurs and have a ride on a pony or dromedary.

In the restaurant it is possible to taste a typical rice dish baked over wood chips. For those who prefer to bring their own food, there is a picnic area and there is also a cafeteria.

In addition there are trampolines, a kart circuit and, in the summer, a swimming pool with slide.

• Winter: 10:00 to 18:00.
• Summer: 10:00 to 20:00.

Admission Fees

• Adults: 22.50 €.
• Children from 3 to 12 years old: 17 € (proof of age required).
• Special prices for groups of over 20 people with prior reservation): Adults 14 €, Children 12 €.

These prices include: a guided tour by train, a visit to the reptile cave, the aviary, the crocodile farm, the farm school, the animal shows and, in the summer, the swimming pool.

Have you always wanted to swim with sea lions or see giraffes or chimpanzees up close? Río Safari is an animal park located between Elche and Santa Pola that will make your dreams come true.

Sitting just 4km from the beach and with 4,500 palm trees , the park has a tropical feel. Over a hundred different animal species call the park home, including white lions, Bornean orangutangs, Angolan giraffes, chimpanzees, lions, Bengali tigers and sealions.

The park is divided into areas which recreate different ecosystems, namely the African savanna, the reptile cave, chimpanzee island, the orangutang sanctuary, Australia, lion kingdom, the aviary and the educational farm. Beyond visiting the animals, you can also enjoy exhibitions, go go-karting and play in the kids’ area .

In terms of experiences, Río Safari Elche has got something unique: the opportunity to swim with sealions. There is also a water park , open in the summer, where you can spend hours sliding down the flumes and splashing around.

Rio Safari Elche is located behind Santa Pola's large port area and just 6 minutes drive from the town centre. This excellent safari park has been welcoming visitors since 1983 and is home to rescued animals from around the world. Being a coastal town, many of Santa Pola's attractions relate to the sea. There is a small yet well cared for and great value aquarium close to the marina. A variety of boats and water taxis offer trips to nearby Tabarca Island, another popular attraction boasting a pristine marine reserve. For a superb family day out though, head for Rio Safari Elche.

Rio Safari Elche Animal Enclosures

Throughout the well maintained park are various open air and covered animal enclosures. These have been designed to ensure as natural an environment as possible for the animals, using both regional plants and trees, and vegetation indigenous to some of the animal's countries of origin. The upkeep of these enclosures, and of course the animals themselves, is undertaken by fully trained and highly dedicated park wardens. These guys really enjoy their work and put on a variety of fun and educational shows for regular visitors, school groups and birthday parties.

Rio Safari Elche Animals

The stars of the show for younger visitors to the park are the cheeky monkeys. These come from a variety of different countries and include white handed gibbons with the acrobatic skills of trapeze artists. There are the rather shy black crested mangabey's with their chubby cheeks and Mohawk hairstyles. Then you have the large apes such as the chimpanzee and Borneo orangutan.

Rio Safari Elche would not be complete without animals from the African savanna, home to the original safari experience. Gentle giraffes, the nomad of the African plains look curiously down on gawping visitors, while majestic lions enjoy nothing more than lazing about in the warm Spanish sunshine. Other carnivorous animals include the Bengal tiger from India and the fierce jaguar from south America. Various feathered friends and scaly reptiles also call the park home.

Rio Safari Elche Leisure Facilities

A welcome addition to Rio Safari Elche during the peak summer months is the recreational area. Taking centre stage is a refreshing swimming pool. This is surrounded by sun terraces and has a fun water slide. The fun continues for younger children in the recently opened Splash Zone. This is a shallow pool area with inventive water toys, fountains and cascades for super fun in the sun.

Those with a need for speed can enjoy the thrills of the go-kart track. This is a small circuit with karts for all ages. These include child, junior and adult karts as well as dual karts for adult and child, and little electric cars for younger children. Close to this is the Jump Zone with trampolines and not to forget, the Safari Train. The train is really handy to get around the park. Visitors can hop on or off at the various enclosures, and the train actually enters the tame animal enclosures.

Rio Safari Elche Dining Facilities

A variety of dining options are available at Rio Safari Elche. The main restaurant has a pleasant outdoor dining terrace. This is handily located next to a children's mini-adventure park. It is multi-tiered and has a great selection of fun obstacles for the young ones to play on, safely overlooked by their parents. The well selected menu offers both Mediterranean and international cuisine in addition to hot and cold drinks. A snack shack offers lighter bites. This includes the usual favourites such as sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs as well as delicious combo platters. Finally, for those wishing to bring their own food & drink, there is a large covered picnic area.
