Sightseeing:

One of the primary reasons to visit Santarem is to see the "Wedding of the Waters". This is the phenomenon that occurs when two rivers merge and each river has different characteristics. At Santarem the Rio Tapajos joins the Rio Amazonas. The Rio Tapajos is a river of very clear and clean water and the Amazon is quite muddy. The two run side by side for miles before blending together. In fact, there is a clean line that separates the two rivers even though they are flowing as one.

The Nova Orla Fluvial promenade follows Av Tapajós over a mile from the Museu de Santarém almost as far as the Docas do Para. A nice stroll starts from Praça Matriz heading west, passing colorful boats before ending in the shadow of the massive Cargill facility, a symbol of Brazil’s burgeoning soy trade. There is little shade, so bring a hat.

Santarem is an Amazon River cruise port and city in western Para state (Brazil) with population around 205,000. The city is located at the confluence of Amazon and Tapajos rivers, it is ranked among state's most popular tourism travel destination.

Santarem is approx 800 km (500 ml) from Brazilian Amazon's largest city Manaus (located upriver in state Amazonas) and approx 700 km (440 ml) from Para's capital Belem (downriver at the mouth of Amazon on Atlantic Ocean). Santarem metro area, includes Belterra and Mojuí dos Campos.

As New Santarem, the town was established in 1661 by Portuguese colonists and is one of Brazilian Amazon's oldest. Due to Tapajos River's crystalline waters, the coastline has over 100 km (62 ml) of natural beaches. Before the arrival of European settlers, Santarém was inhabited by the Tapajós Indians, who were a large agricultural tribe. Portuguese colonists arriving in 1661 called their new home New Santarém. It's one of the Brazilian Amazon's oldest cities. The little variety in temperature year round (which is typically warm), long stretches of beach, and crystal clear waters have earned the nearby village of Alter do Chão the designation of "Caribbean in Brazil." With plenty of fascinating activities both indoors and out, there's something to please every traveler. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Santarém, Brazil:

• Look for rock formations standing in the white sands of Ponta de Pedras Beach. You'll hardly believe the water here is part of the Amazon system, because it has a more oceanic feel to it. If you need a bite, there are plenty of food stands nearby selling fresh fish.  
• Check out the Meeting of the Waters, where the Amazon and Tapajós meet. Before they join together, each river retains its distinct hue: the Amazon that of a muddy brown, while the Tapajós is an emerald green. The sheer force of each river keeps them separate for several miles, despite their close proximity.

For those who want to see the Amazon river during their South American cruise , there is perhaps no better port than Santarem. This town is what's known as a "river port" meaning your cruise ship will actually sail up the river in order to reach the settlement.

Once you've arrived, stop for a few minutes and simply take in the massive Amazon river that the city is located on. This is one of the most amazing spots on Earth, but few people ever make the trek to visit.

Santarem is an especially amazing destination, because it is located where the Amazon meets the Tapajos, another massive Brazilian river. These two waters join close near the city, but those who go on a river cruise will notice that the waters will remain two distinct colors for several miles. Such is the force of these two rivers that it takes quite a while for the two shades to mix into one. This is known as the "Meeting of the Waters," and is truly an amazing sight. You'll be able to pick out the two rivers, as the Tapajos is emerald green while the Amazon is a muddy brown.

Back in town, pay a visit to the Joao Fona Cultural Center. This museum is housed in a 19th-century mansion and will help you learn more about the town of Santarem. This region of Brazil actually has quite a few ties to America. Many Confederate soldiers fled here after the Civil War to start life anew. Henry Ford also visited the region to establish manufacturing plants for his automobile company.

If you want to learn more about the region, take a trek through the nearby Saint Lucia Woods. This is your chance to visit an Amazonian rainforest and glimpse the various flora and fauna that is native to Brazil. But it's also an opportunity to learn about the ecological side of things and see the effects that agriculture and manufacturing is having on the region.

Visiting Santarém, Brazil: A Quick Tour Into the Amazon

Santarém, Brazil is a relatively large city in the Amazon that lies on the point where the Tapajos River meets the Amazon River. It serves as an important commercial hub for exports leaving the region as well as an important hub for travelers entering the Amazon.

It is a popular stop for cruise ships that are venturing into the Amazon, and it was my first Amazonian port of call on the Zaandam.

Here’s a little history, my impressions, and the details on a spontaneous tour I took in Santarém, Brazil.

A brief history:.

The region was once inhabited by indigenous tribes who established communities thousands of years ago. Archeologists have found crafted pottery and signs of agriculture, indicating fairly advanced, fairly settled societies.  

The area was stumbled upon in 1542 by Francisco de Orellana on his famous mission to discover El Dorado, the legendary city of gold. Santarém itself was officially founded in 1661 by Captain Manual Preto, a Portuguese explorer. The colonizers discovered the abundance of rubber trees, and Santarém blossomed into a center for the collection and trade of rubber.

Things took a turn in the 1900s as rubber production popped up across the world. (The tale of the grand rubber seed theft is quite dramatic. You can check out THIS book to learn more!)

The people pivoted accordingly to agriculture, fishing, and lodging. Today, Santarém serves as an important industrial, agricultural, and commercial hub for the greater region.

My First Impression of Santarém Brazil

Hot humid air engulfed every exposed inch of skin as I stepped off the shuttle bus. A waterfront promenade was on my left. A small cohort of souvenir stalls on my right. I cruised along the waterfront to take in the views and catch some breeze. Huge industrial ships lumbered along far off shore, and the coast line was splattered with small canoe-like boats.

One thing was blazingly clear—the waterline was distressingly low.

 You see, the Amazon is experiencing a historic draught. El Nino weather patterns, rising temperatures, deforestation, and climate change have all compounded, resulting in the lowest recorded water levels in over a century. Fishing, agriculture, tourism, and shipments down the river have all been disrupted. In fact, the Zaandam almost wasn’t able to enter the Amazon, and at one point the water levels between the river floor and ship’s bottom was a mere 1.8 meters.

I swerved into the heart of Santarém and was struck by the busyness. Impossibly narrow sidewalks were lined with an absurd amount of stores selling clothes, shoes, gizmos, make up, and everything in between. A handful of shops had AC with H & M vibes. Most were market style—open air with items piled and jammed into every corner. Plenty of people were shopping. I got the impression that Santarém is where everyone in the wider area goes to get supplies.

My sweat sizzled under the baking sun, and my ability to explore waned. I circled back to a tourist center at the waterfront where a wiry man was selling boat tours.  

“Hi my name is Patrick!” He whipped up his forearm to show me a foot long tattoo of “Patrick” in cursive. “I once forgot my name for 3 years… this is so I never forget.” Amnesia or an existential crisis? Hard to say.

The deal was a 2 hour boat ride for 144 Brazilian reals (around $30 usd). After ascertaining that that was the price everyone else was paying with a few failed negotiation tips, I said, “Sign me up Patrick!”

Tip: If you find yourself at the tourist center in Santarém Brazil wanting to go on this boat ride, I recommend asking for a clear price and how many people you need to gather. Patrick kept changing the story of how many people we needed to finally go, which delayed the process.

Part 1: The Meeting of the Rivers

Myself along with 11 other people (who just so happened to be Zaandam passengers) piled into the little covered canoe as our driver, Elvis, sped off.  Stop one was the “meeting of the waters”, which is where the brown, muddy Amazon merges with the dark, almost black Tapajos River. The color differentiation wasn’t noticeable given the light and vantage point. But we did see a boat gas station, which was neat.

Part 2: The Journey to the Jungle:

The boat changed course into a narrower tributary. We spotted a few grey dolphins, a herd of water buffalo, and a handful of interesting birds. Lush trees spewed out of the dry ground. The line of where the water should be was noticeable.

Part 3: A Short Hike

I’ve always envisioned the Amazon rainforest as lush, verdant and colorful. Monkeys swinging in the treetops. Brightly colored toucans singing away. Hundreds of bugs of all shapes, colors, and poison levels minding their own business. Snakes slithering about.

This section of the jungle was dry, brown, and relatively lifeless compared to the vision I created in the 2 nd grade. We spotted a couple sloths, and there were some interesting vines and unique spikey trees. I suspect that there were actually thousands of little critters who have mastered the art of disguise moseying around the jungle floor. But I didn’t see any.

Part 4: The Journey Back to Santarém Brazil

On the boat ride back to the pier, I reveled in the little snapshots of life we passed by. A herd of pigs filing into the river for respite from the heat. Two shirtless kids playing with sticks as their father set up a fishing net. Huge shipping centers preparing cargo to go down the river. Little fishing boats bobbing off the shore. Construction equipment moving sand and gravel. The occasional river dolphin popping up for air.

And just like that, the tour was over and it was time to head back to the Zaandam.

Final Thoughts on Santarém, Brazil.

My vision of wild jungle with dancing tree top canopies and vibrant life proved to be wrong. In hindsight, it’s quite naive to expect to see the likes of anacondas and tree frogs so close to a big city in the middle of the day along a commonly trodded path. I did see, however, a glimpse at the industrial side of the Amazon. The waterways were jammed with big ships, and huge plots of land along the shore were clearly being used for commercial purposes.

I got the sense that the locales were resourceful, shrewd, and deeply connected with the land. There was a strong sense of destitution (when compared to Western standards), but not desperation.

This experience was an impossibly minuscule glimpse at what the Amazon has to offer. Stay tuned for more journeys to come!

Santarém, Brazil

You’re truly in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon  in this port, located midway between Belém and Manaus . Although only a fraction of the size of the two cities, Santarém is one of the region's busier export hubs as well as a popular river cruise stop near the confluence of the Amazon and Tapajós rivers. The pristine Tapajós has beautiful blue water and more than 60 miles of sandy beaches. Santarém, founded as a Jesuit colony in the 17th century, is considered one of Brazil’s oldest settlements.

Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição:  Any city tour will bring you to this 18th-century church, one of the first buildings erected by Portuguese missionaries. Notable for its collection of art and its Portuguese architecture, it honors Our Lady of Conception, patron saint of Santarém.

Tapajós National Forest:  Santarém, known as the "Pearl of the Tapajós,” is the gateway to some of the most precious preserved land in the Brazilian Amazon. Full-day boat excursions to the “floresta” (Portuguese for forest) allow visitors to see indigenous villages, hike through first-growth groves and swim at a beach. Walking tours are much shorter and focus on the woodland itself.

Meeting of the Waters:  It's fun to witness the extraordinary confluence of two rivers — the Tapajós and the Amazon — which run side by side before merging. Here, the Amazon is dark, while the Tapajós is a gorgeous green-blue. You can often see this phenomenon from the top deck of your ship; many shore excursions also include a stop at a viewpoint on the riverbank.

“Caribbean”-style Beaches:  White-sand beaches and warm aquamarine water have earned this region a Caribbean comparison. The closest beach resort to Santarém is Maracanã, a pretty fishing village about 20 minutes away with great restaurants and bars.

Tropical Types:  Get ready to swim, sunbathe, stroll along miles of soft white sand — and sample fantastic freshwater fish, prepared as local specialties: pirarucu in tucupi sauce, tambaqui baked over coals and piracuí bolinhos (fritters).

Mercado Modelo:  This covered market across from the riverfront might offer convenient souvenir shopping, but Brazilians consider it a tourist trap.

Alter do Chão is Not a Given: You definitely want to see the actual town that earned the “Caribbean in Brazil” accolade. Many cruise lines have started making it a separate stop, but you'll need to book an excursion from Santarém if it's not on your itinerary.

7 Day - Tapajos River

Embarkation

PM: Early afternoon, you arrive in Santarém and you are welcomed at the airport and transferred by air-conditioned coach to the landing stage. The trip to the quay where the boat is moored allows you to discover the city, located at the confluence of the Amazon and the Tapajos rivers. On arrival, the cruise director welcomes you on board the Amazon Dream. You settle into your cabin. 

Drinking fruit juices with amazing flavors, you meet the crew. Your guide presents the cruise itinerary and gives a few explanations concerning the logbook and security rules on board. The Amazon Dream casts off and glides gently towards the confluence. For miles, the blue waters of the Tapajos interlace with the yellow waters of the Amazon without merging, as in a vast piece of lace. It’s one of the favourite playgrounds of the pink dolphins (boto) and the grey dolphins (tucuxi). One last glance at this amazing scene and you cruise towards the mouth of the Jari River. This small tributary linking the Amazon to the Tapajos River is bursting with dolphins, birds, and caimans.

The guide gives a briefing of the next day’s program and the region where the boat has dropped anchor. Dinner will be served on board. Night at the river mouth of the Jari.

Jari Community Visit

AM: Breakfast. Outing in motorboats for a full-scale expedition, going down the Jari River. You visit the community living on the banks of the Jari and observe the fauna and flora. Return to the boat for lunch.

PM: After lunch, navigate on to the Arapiuns River the d'Urucureá cove (approximately 2 hours). Dinner on board. Night in the Urucurea Cove.

Forest Trek & Ponta Grande Visit

AM: Breakfast in the sunshine. Outing in motorboats for a full-scale expedition in the Urucurea forest. You visit the community and observe the fauna and flora. Hike in the forest with monkeys observation. Return to the ship for lunch. 

PM: In the afternoon, navigate towards Ponta Grande and Coroca Village. Mooring anchor at the tip of Ponta Grande. Then, enjoy a short presentation by your guide, about the next day and the area where the boat has made its moorings. Dinner on board. Overnight in Ponta Grande.

Coroca Community & Maguari

AM: After breakfast on board, an outing to visit the Coroca community. You visit the village and observe the daily activities of the cabocles: preparing the manioc (cassava) flour, the basic ingredient in all local dishes.

PM: Lunch on board, beach, and relaxation. Navigate toward Maguari, a village on the shore of the Tapajos National Forest. The boat weighs anchor and navigates on the blue waters of the Tapajos that, at that point, is over 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide. A new ecosystem, new rivers, and landscapes: here begins another voyage into the heart of the Amazon as you have never imagined, where white sand beaches (from August to January) and lakes make up a magnificent setting. Short presentation by your guide, regarding next day activities. Dinner on board. Overnight at Maguari.

Visit Community & Lake Marai

AM: Breakfast, then you leave for a hike in the primary forest with native guides from the community of Maguari or Jamaraqua, looking for gigantic trees. You may observe birds, kings of the canopy, and blue butterflies, and you may be able to glimpse agile monkeys and sloths. After the long walk, swimming and relaxation. Lunch on board

PM: In the afternoon, coasting on the right bank of the river to Lake Marai (approximately 2 hours). We are on the trail of the expedition Langsdorff, close to one of the villages of the Munduruku Indians, painted by Florence in 1828. Their descendants, anxious to preserve and make known their traditions, reinvested places and receive visitors under ecotourism programs. Output with the motor boat on the Bragança lake for bird watching at the sunset. At night, a short presentation by the guide about the next day. Dinner on board. Night on the Bragança Lake.

Alter do Chao

AM: After breakfast, go out for wildlife observation, shipping on the lake accompanied by local guide. Lunch on board and navigation towards Alter do Chao for the last night in the heart of the Amazonian forest. 

PM: In the afternoon, departure in motorboats to discover Alter do Chao. Then, enjoy traditional dances and music on one of the beaches of Alter do Chao. (depending on the weather conditions). At night, navigation to Santarém.

Disembarkation

AM: Breakfast and morning visit to the fish market (depending on the opening day) or direct transfer to the airport for those whose plane is very early that day.

PM: Lunch on board or in a local restaurant for those who only leave in the afternoon and transfer to the airport. End of the cruise.

10 Day - Amazon & Tapajos Rivers

AM : In Santarem, you are welcomed at the airport/the hotel of your choice, and transferred by air-conditioned coach to the landing stage. The trip to the quay where the boat is moored allows you to discover the city, located at the confluence of the Amazon and the Tapajos rivers. On arrival, the cruise director welcomes you on board the Amazon Dream. You settle into your cabin. The smiles and music everywhere let you know you are in Amazonia.

PM : Drinking fruit juices with amazing flavors, you meet the crew. Your guide presents the cruise itinerary and gives a few explanations concerning the logbook. The Amazon Dream casts off and glides gently towards the confluence. For miles, the blue waters of the Tapajos interlace with the yellow waters of the Amazon without merging, as in a vast piece of lace. It’s one of the favorite playgrounds of the pink dolphins (boto) and the grey dolphins (tucuxi).

One last glance at this amazing scene and you cruise towards the mouth of the Ituqui river, a channel parallel to Amazon. (3 hours). Sunset and drinks on the third bridge (do not forget the mosquito repellent, you are on the Amazon). A short presentation by the guide about the next day and the area where the boat has made its moorings. Dinner on board. First contact with the noises, cries, and murmurs of the Amazon Rain Forest. Night at the mouth of the Ituqui River.

Maica Lake & Curua-Una River

AM : Breakfast. At sunrise, the forest awakens a noisy and multicolored ballet of parrots, toucans, and other birds … the birds take possession of their realm again. You’re in Amazonia. Outing in motorboats to observe birds and flora with your guide on the Maica Lake. It’s a sanctuary for observing numerous birds, crocodiles some time and dolphins.

Piranha fishing. Everyone receives a fishing rod, bait, and follows the sailors’ advice to try their hands at one of the main activities in this place: fishing.

PM : Back onboard the Amazon Dream, lunch and relaxation. Cruise by Ituqui River and the Amazon River toward the mouth of the Curua-Una River. Navigation towards the village of Pacoval on the Curua-Una River. This little village provides a singular example of everyday life in Amazonia.

You visit the community “Quilombolas” (descendant of African slaves in the 18th century, refugees in the Amazon) and meet the inhabitants. Sunset and drinks on the third bridge. A short presentation by the guide, the next day and the area where the boat has made its moorings. Dinner on board. Night at the mouth of the Curua-Una River.

The Curua-Una River & Pacoval Village

AM : At sunrise, we have breakfast and head out on our first excursion walking in the primary forest to observe wildlife and flora with your guide. Expedition on the Curua-Una River with motorboats. Many pink dolphins are generally present in these waters, monkeys in the threes, and always birds in one of the most beautiful landscapes.

PM : Back on the boat and lunch on board. Navigation of the Amazon River in the direction of Santarem. On the river banks, you can see the houses on stilts of the caboclos, the “water people”, a population descended from the mix of Indians and their Portuguese conquerors in the 16th and 17th centuries. A short presentation by the guide about the next day and the area where the boat has made its moorings. Arrival and overnight in Sao Joao do Tapara, near Monte Alegre Lake.

Santarem & Mouth of the Jari

AM : Breakfast. Outing in motorboats to observe the fauna and flora on the small tributaries, which link the Amazon to the Monte Alegre Lake.

PM : Lunch on board. You arrive at the Santarém river terminal. You visit the town and discover its herbalists, harbor bazaars, stalls selling multicolored hammocks, and its inhabitants’ hectic life. Back onboard the Amazon Dream and towards the Mouth of the Jari; this small tributary river linking the Amazon to the Tapajos River is bursting with dolphins, birds, and caimans… The guide gives a brief outline of the next day’s program and the region where the boat has dropped anchor. Dinner on board. Night at the river mouth of the Jari River.

AM : Breakfast. Exploration around the area of the Jari River with a motorboat. Late in the morning, visit a village living in the banks of the Jari and observe the fauna and flora.

PM : Lunch on board. Beach and relaxation. Navigation on the Arapiuns River the d'Urucureá cove. Dinner on board. Night in the Urucurea cove.

Urucurea River, Caribbean at the Heart of Amazonia & Alter Do Chao

AM : Outing in motorboats for a full-scale expedition in the Urucurea River. You visit the community and observe the fauna and flora. Trek to the forest with Monkeys Observation. Return to the boat

PM : Lunch on board. In the afternoon, navigation towards Alter do Chao, the “Caribbean in the heart of Amazonia”. Dropping anchor at the tip of Cururu or near the green lake; an Indian legend has it that a magic stone hidden at the bottom of the lake gives it this extraordinary blue-green luminescence. A short presentation by the guide, the next day and the area where the boat has made its moorings... Dinner on board. Overnight in Alter do Chao.

AM : Breakfast. Outing to visit the Coroca community. You visit the village and observe the daily life activities of the cabocles: preparing the manioc (cassava) flour, a basic ingredient in all local dishes.

PM : Lunch on board. In the afternoon, navigation toward Maguari, a village on the shore of the Tapajos National Forest. The boat weighs anchor and navigates on the blue waters of the Tapajos which, at that point, is over 20 kilometers wide. 

A new ecosystem, new riverscapes, and landscapes: here begins a new cruise into the heart of the Amazon as you have never imagined it, where white sand beaches (from August to January) and lakes make up a magnificent setting. Maguari & the Trail of Expedition Langsdorff

AM : Breakast, t hen you leave for a hike in the primeval forest with native guides from the community of Maguari, looking for gigantic trees. You observe birds, kings of the canopy, blue butterflies, and you may be able to glimpse agile monkeys and sloths.

PM : After the long walk, swimming and relaxation. Lunch on board. Coasting on the right bank of the river to Lake Marai. We are on the trail of the expedition Langsdorff, close to one of the villages of the Munduruku Indians, painted by Florence in 1828. Their descendants, anxious to preserve and make known their traditions, receive visitors under ecotourism programs. Wildlife observation & Alter do Chao

AM : Breakfast on board. Wildlife observation, shipping on the lake accompanied by local guides.

PM : Return to the boat and lunch. Navigation towards Alter do Chao for the last night in the heart of the Amazonian forest. Traditional dancing and music on one of the beaches of Alter do Chao.

AM : Breakfast on board. Visit to the fish market (depending on the opening day) or transfer to the hotel of your choice/Santarem airport, depending on your return flight schedule.

Santarem, Brazil

Perched alongside the Rio Tapajós deep inside the Amazon between Manaus and Belém (but 800 kilometers, or almost 500 miles, from both!), Santarém is a muggy but intriguing jungle town and a jumping-off point for a bevy of surrounding attractions. Established as a Jesuit mission in 1661, Santarém suffered from the same rubber boom-and-bust cycle as Pará's capital, Belém. The town later had a moment in the spotlight as the nearest major significant port to Henry Ford's American utopian jungle experiment, Fordlândia, which tried and failed between 1928 and 1945 (its ruins are located 12 hours downriver by boat).

Today, Santarém does a brisk business in tourism thanks to the crystalline waters of the Tapajós River, which account for over 105 kilometers (65 miles) of postcard-perfect river beaches in its environs. Alter do Chão, a Brazilian dream destination of idyllic sands, has been called the Caribbean of Brazil; and Floresta Nacional (FLONA) do Tapajós, a pristinely preserved 2,100-square-kilometer (811-square-mile) piece of Amazon beauty, boasts massive Samauma trees and a few burgeoning eco-tourism enterprises. Both Alter do Chão and FLONA can be experienced as day trips from Santarém. The city itself boasts a pleasant riverfront promenade, a few worthwhile museums (keep an eye out for evidence of the city's little-known past as a refuge for sympathizers to the Confederate cause who emigrated here after the Civil War; their descendants, Confederados , still live here today) and several great restaurants.
