Heading to Greece soon and looking for the best things to do in Santorini? Only have a short amount of time? Don’t fret – you can still fulfill all your idyllic whitewashed Greek Island fantasies with only 3 days in Santorini.

Heading to Greece soon and looking for the best things to do in Santorini?! Check out this 3-day Santorini guide, full of those dazzling blue-domed churches so iconic to the island!

Spanakopita. Sapphire Aegean Waters. Candy colored houses. Gleaming white buildings.

Oh, just a few things that make up the wonderful-ness that is Santorini. If you’re visiting Greece in the near future, make sure you include at least 3 days in Santorini.

And if you follow the advice in this Santorini travel blog and/or this Santorini itinerary, you’re already ahead of the game! Wondering what to do in Santorini, Greece? Keep on reading, my Mediterranean, feta-loving friend!

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

Santorini is an island that has it all – hypnotic sunsets, volcanoes rising out of the blue Aegean Sea, cave house accommodations, and of course those stereotypical (but equally as beautiful) blue-domed churches amidst whitewashed stone buildings.   As with Rome , Santorini is just one of those places I’d gladly revisit time and time again.

And after visiting 30+ countries , I can easily say that Greece and its painstakingly breathtaking islands are by far one of my favorites.  While three days in Santorini sure isn’t enough, it’s a wonderful introduction to Greek island life and will have you longing for return visits time and time again.

When to Visit Santorini

The best times to visit Santorini are April-May and September-October.  During these times, the weather will be a bit milder (not as scorching hot during the day), and less crowded.

Santorini, Greece 2016-47

The weather in the winter months (November – March) is not ideal (definitely can’t go in for a quick Mediterranean beach dip) and many businesses (tour operators, restaurants, and even some hotels/ accommodations) will be closed for the season, although this is beginning to change as more tourists are visiting during these months.

Note that prime time/high season is between late June to early September, and hotel prices will naturally reflect that.

Quick Reference Guide of when to visit Santorini:

  • Best beach and swimming weather: June to September
  • Best sightseeing weather: March to June and September to November
  • High Season: late June until early September
  • Low Season/Winter: late November to early March

Where to Stay in Santorini

Tourists choose to stay in four main villages of Santorini, as listed below.  However, wherever you do decide to stay, I highly encourage you to opt for a hotel with an infinity pool overlooking the caldera.  We based ourselves in Imerovigli at Astra Suites during our time in Santorini, and couldn’t have been happier.  Many luxury hotels boast private hot tubs, butler services, fine-dining, and other top-notch amenities.

A few things to note when thinking about accommodation in Santorini:

  • There are no big chain hotels on the island. The best spots are small, privately owned boutique hotels.
  • If you’re visiting other places on your Greek honeymoon or throughout Europe, Santorini is the place to splurge on accommodation. Once you see the views, you’ll quickly understand why.
  • Decide which part of the island you want to stay before doing specific research on hotels. You essentially have two choices: along the caldera (in Oia, Fira/Firostefani, or Imerovigli) which boast spectacular sunset and Mediterranean Sea and volcano views, or on one of the beach towns on the other side of the island (Kamari or Perissa), which are a bit less expensive and right on the beach, but missing those epic views that Santorini is very well known for.
  • Note that prices range significantly between hotel accommodations depending on the season. A luxury hotel can cost upwards of $800+ a night during high season, while the same room may cost a few hundred less during low/off season. Just something to keep in mind while planning your three days in Santorini. 🙂

Santorini, Greece 2016-69

If you’re planning on visiting Santorini during high season, it’s best to book your accomodation at least 6-10 months in advance. No, I’m not kidding. Hotels book up super fast in this area of the world. Aka – if you’re visiting during June, July, August, or September, get on it, fast.

  • Oia: If you want to be right in the middle of the action and don’t mind paying a price for it, a stay in Oia is just for you. Top Recommended hotels in Oia:
  • Budget-ish: Fava Eco Residences , Aethrio , Fileria Suites
  • Mid-Level: Thirea Suites and Studios – Adults Only , Nikkos Villas , Aisling Micro Hotel
  • Luxury: Andronis Luxury Suites , Alexander’s Boutique Hotel , Katikies Hotel
  • Imerovigli: If you want some peace and quiet and impeccable views, consider spending your nights in Imerovigli. Top Recommended hotels in Imerovigli:
  • Budget-ish: Remezzo Villas , Athiri Santorini , Pantheon Villas
  • Mid-Level: Astra Suites , Rocabella Santorini Hotel , Casa di Mare
  • Luxury: Dreams Luxury Suites , San Antonio, Sophia Luxury Suites, Grace Santorini

Santorini, Greece 2016-81

  • Fira: Santorini’s capital, which has tons of wonderful restaurants and a decent amount of night life. Top Recommended hotels in Fira:
  • Budget-ish: Panorama Studios and Suites , Oasis Hotel, Sunset Hotel
  • Mid-Level: Belvedere Suites , Fanari Vista Suites , On the Cliff
  • Luxury: Homeric Poems , Sun Rocks Boutique Hotel , Cosmopolitan Suites
  • Budget: Margarenia Studios , Iliada Hotel , Perissa Bay
  • Mid-Level: Anastasia Princess Hotel, Villa the Birds
  • Luxury: Sea View Perivolos , Memories Beach

Top Things to do in Santorini

Whether you’re spending 3 days in Santorini to relax with cocktails on the beach/infinity pool, or hoping to add a bit more adventure into the mix, this tiny island (and Santorini itinerary) won’t leave you disappointed. If all else fails, just stuff your face with some feta and spanakopita and you’ll leave happy as a clam.

Despite Santorini’s diversity, the island is rather small so you can really see it all, even with limited time. My top recommendations on things to do in Santorini below, either experienced by me or by close friends!

ATV Tour around the Island

Spend a full day in Santorini by renting an ATV (quad), dune buggy, scooter, or car and explore the island.  Try not to rent an ATV in Oia as you will pay a premium at this location.  One of my most favorite things to do in Santorini, and I made sure to do this both times I visited the island.

Santorini, Greece 2016-73

A few spots to visit during your self-guided ATV tour of Santorini:

Red Beach : One of Santorini’s most unique spots, and not to be missed!  Note that the sand is full of volcanic pebbles and you will need to take a 15 minute mini-hike to reach the beach down below.

I suggest stopping for a few photos and then moving on.  Those azure blue waters are just aching to be photographed.

Santorini, Greece 2016-57

Perissa Beach: This is one of Santorini’s black sand beaches, and a good place to pop down for a bit and savor the Greek sun.  The black volcanic sand is extremely hot hot hot, so take your sandals with you if you go into the water (or run back miserably like I did…)

This stretch of sand is lined with restaurants and bars, and be sure to grab a gyro and a cocktail here!

Oia : You cannot come all the way to Santorini (yes, it’s kind of a pain getting here) and not witness the charm of Oia yourself.  More details below, but Oia is a great last stop on an ATV tour of the island.

However, beware: the area gets over-crowded and disgustingly hot during the summer months of July and August. But I promise you, even if you’re visiting during these months, an afternoon in Oia is still one of the best things to do in Santorini.

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

If navigating the island via ATV scares your socks off, consider joining a bus tour to all the hot spots in Santorini. Not only will you visit Santorini’s most popular sites and learn about its history, but you’ll also visit traditional villages, volcanic beaches and witness one of those spectacular Oia sunsets everyone raves about!

If you want to guarantee you see the island and have enough time for the beach (on another day), I highly recommend joining this tour in order to get it all in. Read reviews and book your full-day bus tour here.

Santorini Wine Tour

Calling all wine-lovers. I repeat! Attention wine lovers! A half-day wine tour is a must on any three day Santorini itinerary. Santorini wines are some of the best in Greece, and this half-day wine tour takes you to three of the best wineries on the island.

Not only will you sample 12 different wine styles (yes, really 12!), but these wines will be served with cheese, salami, and Greek olives. #yesplease

And since you’ll be probably a bit wobbly after all these tastings, thankfully the tour includes complimentary pickup and drop off service, from all hotels/apartments throughout Santorini (including Oia and Fira). One less thing to worry about. Read reviews and book your wine tour here.

Wondering what to do in Santorini, Greece besides hit up the beach? WINE, my friend.  Don’t miss this.

Foot Path Hike from Fira to Oia

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

The views, the landscapes, the peacefulness – you’ll be glad you took this stroll along the caldera. The walk takes about three hours, but the views are 100% worth it!  Be sure to take a decent amount of water with you, as the stalls are few and far between.  You may not find water for over an hour.

However, it’s not a good choice for those with vertigo – take the bus or your ATV to Oia instead!

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

Boat Cruise to Nea Kameni and Hot Springs

Since the island was formed via volcano, it’s quite appropriate to visit the volcanic island of Nea Kameni by no other than sailing to it! You’ll have the opportunity to walk up the ascending soil path, and approach the crater of the active volcano.

Your second stop will bring you to the second lava island of Palea Kameni, where you can swim in the green sulphur waters of the hot springs. Make sure to wear your bathing suit! Read reviews and book your boat cruise here.

Definitely one of more active things to do in Santorini, and a good option if you like being on the water and/or are exhausted from laying out at the pool (should that ever happen…).

Santorini Cooking Class

With all those Mediterranean flavors you’ve hopefully been tasting during your meals, you may be wishing you can recreate these at home! You’re in luck, because this tour will be right up your alley (especially if you enjoy a nice wine or two).

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

Not only will you learn how to cook with a professional chef, but you’ll also visit premier wineries in the Greek countryside (with 9 wine tastings!), taste traditional Greek aperitifs such as Raki and Ouzo, and enjoy a complimentary lunch in a traditional restaurant. Read reviews and book your cooking class/wine tour here.

Watch the sunset

Yes, the sunset in Oia is pure magic, but the sunset from Imerovigli is just as spectacular, and with way less crowds.  If you have your heart set on the famed Oia sunset, be sure to get there especially early in order to claim your spot.

santorini weekend trip

When I say it gets crowded, it really gets ridiculously crowded, meaning you’ll be sharing your romantic sunset spot with 100’s of other people.  If you booked a hotel in either Oia or Imerovigli, simply hang on your terrace/balcony and watch the sun dip below the sea alone, a glass of bubbly optional.  😉

Explore Oia

Oia is stunning.  There’s just no other words for it.  There are postcard views at every corner you turn, but because of this, it’s also the busiest town on all of the island.  Don’t let this deter you from visiting though – as Oia just cannot be missed.  Wander around to the cliff side by walking down random steps you find, and you’ll come across those spectacular views you came for.

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

After exploring the town of Oia, make your way down the many steps to Ammoudi Bay , the little fishing village below.  You’ll be greeted with a different view of Oia, including fishermen catching their fish of the day.  Enjoy a fantastic seafood meal here, seaside!

Feeling adventurous?  Head east along the path a bit, and you’ll come across a tiny island located just off the shore.  This spot is super popular for cliff jumping (ahhhh) and swimming.

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

Tired?  You can hire a donkey to take you back up to Oia, but I don’t condone it as I’m not sure how the animals are treated.  Be sure to take a photo though – they are seriously cute adorned in all their fancy decorations!

Go scuba diving

Santorini boasts crystal clear ocean waters, so put on your gear and get below the water!   You’ll see plenty of colorful fish, a shipwreck or two, all while swimming in some of the most beautiful waters of the world.

santorini weekend trip

Never been scuba diving before?  Don’t fret – there are numerous companies offering Discover Scuba lessons, who will teach you all the necessary requirements before suiting up and getting into the waters.

Relax at your Hotel

Sure, you may have come to Santorini to see the sites, but nothing is better than spending a bit of time relaxing at your hotel, especially if you’re on your honeymoon.  In order to fully maximize this experience, I highly advise you to choose accommodation on the caldera with an infinity pool overlooking the scenic Mediterranean Sea.

infinity pool santorini

And plus, if you’re visiting in the heat of the summer, any respite from the scorching temps will be an absolute haven. Plan to spend at least one half day during your 3 days in Santorini to just chill on a chaise lounge, some wine or cocktail in hand.

Where and What to Eat

If you’ve got heaps more time after you’ve completed all the things to do in Santorini, just spend the rest of your days eating. Santorini is a haven for Mediterranean food lovers, and there’s enough variety to try different dishes at every meal.

My favorites: fava beans, saganaki, spanakopita, gyros, and Greek salad, but you can’t go wrong with any on the list.

Recommended Restaurants:

  • Seafood dinner/meal at Dimitris
  • Ammoudi Fish Tavern
  • Nikolas Taverna
  • Lucky’s Souvlaki
  • Gyros at Pito Gyros in Oia
  • Breakfast at Mylos Bar Restaurant in Firostefani
  • Best restaurants with caldera view: Mezzo, Athenian House, Argo, Naoussa, La Maison, and Ambrosia.
  • Best coffee in Santorini is at Passaggio (Oia) and Pure (Fira).

Things to eat during your 3 days in Santorini:

Heading to Greece soon? Make sure to spend at least three days in Santorini! Check out all the things to do in Santorini, what and where to eat, and how to make the most of your Santorini itinerary.

  • Tomato Gefthedes (tomato fritters)
  • Spanakopita (spinach pie)
  • Saganaki (fried cheese in filo pastry covered in honey)
  • Greek Salad – eat all the feta and then some.
  • Souvlaki and Gyros
  • Keftes/Kofta (ground meat, kind of like sausages)
  • Pomegranates
  • Roasted Greek lamb
  • Fava me Koukia (mashed up fava beans)
  • Mythos Beer

Are you heading to Greece soon? What are you most looking forward to on your Santorini itinerary?!

Santorini, Greece.

The view of Oia from Skaros Rock in Imerovigli , Santorini. The hike along the caldera is my favorite thing to do in Santorini.

Santorini is the most spectacular island in Greece and one of the geologic treasures of Europe. The five villages of Fira , Oia , Imerovigli , Firostefani , and Akrotiri sit atop the caldera and offer spectacular views into the crater created from a 16th-century BC volcanic eruption. What remains is an incredible sight and a magical setting for island hikes , infinity pools , luxury hotels , clifftop wineries , and dreamy sunset dinners . With a land area of 76 square kilometers, Santorini is a little bigger than New York’s island of Manhattan. The 2024 Santorini Travel Guide Skip to our Santorini FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Santorini

Where is Santorini?

Santorini is an island in Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, 200 km southeast of Athens , 150 km south of Mykonos , and 140 km north of Crete . Flights to Santorini take 4 hours from London, 3.5 hours from Paris, 2 hours from Rome, and 1 hour from Athens. There are no direct flights to Santorini from the USA, Canada, or Australia.

Map of Santorini's location in Greece.

How do I get to Santorini?

There are multiple daily Athens to Santorini ferries (4.5 to 6 hours by highspeed ferry). The islands of Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos, Folegandros, Mykonos, and Crete (1 to 3 hours) will have direct ferries from April to early November, and sometimes year-round for Naxos and Paros. Flights from Athens to Santorini take less than 1 hour, direct flights from western Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice) take 2 to 4 hours.

Map showing possible air and sea routes to Santorini, Greece

Santorini Ferry Port Video

How big is Santorini? Santorini has a population of 15,500 and a land area of 76 square kilometers (an area a little bigger than Manhattan). The length of the island is 16 km and its width varies from 1 to 5 km. It takes 45 minutes to drive from one end of Santorini to the other. What is the best month to go to Santorini? The best time to visit Santorini for good weather, boat tours, swimming, sunbathing, and nightlife is from June to September. If beach time and hot weather are not a necessity and you’re more interested in sightseeing, history, hiking, and exploring then late March, April, May, October, and early November are also great. What are the main towns in Santorini? The towns of Fira, Oia, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Akrotiri cling to the 300m cliffs and have magical views of the caldera and volcano to the west. The beach towns of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, and Agios Georgios are on the east and south sides of the island (not the caldera).

The most popular towns to stay in Santorini.

Do I need a car in Santorini? A car can be helpful to have in Santorini, but it is not necessary. It’s easy to get around Santorini using their public bus service, which is cheap, comfortable, and reliable – especially if you’re staying in Fira, the central hub of the bus system. If you prefer renting a car in Santorini instead of relying on the bus, I recommend picking it up at the airport, even if you are arriving by ferry. There is a very limited number of taxis, and Uber is not available on Santorini, so private transport from the Santorini airport or ferry port is best arranged in advance through your hotel or through Welcome Pickups car service. There will always be a public bus to meet all arriving ferries. Buses in Santorini are comfortable, cheap, and have plenty of room for luggage.

Where should I stay in Santorini?

The best places to stay in Santorini are along the caldera in the villages of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani. These towns have incredible views of the volcano, sea, and sunset. All of these towns are on the west side of Santorini.

What are the best things to do in Santorini?

The best things to do on Santorini include hiking the incredible caldera footpath, touring wineries, doing a boat tour of the caldera (with volcano hike/hot spring swimming/sunset), and visiting the island’s small charming villages. There is a vibrant nightlife with everything from wine bars to dance clubs but it’s never rowdy and the club scene is easily avoided if you’re not interested. The view of the volcano and Skaros Rock from the amazing Astra Suites Hotel in Imerovigli. How was Santorini created? Santorini is what remains from a massive volcanic eruption 3600 years ago. The eruption destroyed all settlements and created the caldera. The caldera is a lagoon of seawater surrounded on 3 sides by the steep cliffs of Santorini and on the 4th side by the island of Thirassia (which was part of Santorini before the eruption). The current volcano (on the island of Nea Kameni) sits in the middle of the caldera. It’s active but presently not at risk of erupting. This is a good video on the Santorini volcano .

How many days should I spend in Santorini?

Stay a minimum of 2 days and 2 nights. But there’s so much to see and do that it’s easy to fill 5 to 7 days. If possible, do one boat tour , one wine tour , hike the Fira to Oia footpath , explore the villages of Pyrgos and Emporio, and visit the historical sites of Akrotiri and Ancient Thera. You’ll also want plenty of time to wander the cobblestoned lanes and alleys of Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli. Then there’s nightlife and all the great places to eat on Santorini . Santorini does not have the best beaches in Greece – they’re mostly pebble beaches – but the swimming is divine. What currency is used in Santorini? Greece is part of the European Union, so the currency used in Santorini is the Euro (€). Most shops and restaurants on Santorini accept credit cards, but it is a good idea to have some cash on hand for small purchases like bottled water and snacks. ATMs are easy to find in all of Santorini’s main towns.

Sunset view in Fira.

Most restaurants in Santorini, like Marinera in Fira, accept credit cards.

Is Santorini expensive? Santorini is known for 5-star luxury hotels, great restaurants, and high-end shopping but it’s easy to visit Santorini on a modest budget. There are no all-inclusive resorts on Santorini so the key to saving money is to choose hotels and restaurants not directly on the caldera. Enjoying the incredible views is free and cheap hotels in Santorini are plentiful, good value, and good quality. Watch a movie overlooking the caldera at Volkan Cinema in Fira. But for the best movie experience in Santorini head to the Kamari Open Air Cinema . What towns and hotels have the best caldera views? The towns of Fira , Firostefani , Imerovigli , Oia , and Akrotiri are perched on the Santorini cliff and offer incredible views of the caldera and volcano. Not all hotels in these towns have caldera views but many do and the ones that don’t are a short walk (sometimes just steps) from the caldera’s edge, so staying at a caldera hotel isn’t necessary to enjoy the views. Each town offers a unique perspective and there isn’t any one town with the absolute best views. Imerovigli generally has the best sunset views but even this is open to debate and each of the caldera villages has a reasonable claim to having the island’s best views.

Santorini: The best ideas for a great long weekend trip

Santorini: The best ideas for a great long weekend trip

Santorini: the best ideas for a great long weekend trip! It is time for the third article from the Santorini series, last one. If you missed the previous two, you can find them here, one click away: Santorini: Seven Amazing Reasons You Can’t Miss It and Santorini: Six Things You Need To Know Before Traveling .

It takes a lifetime for someone to discover Greece, but it only takes an instant to fall in love with her.

I am sure that by now you know what is your top reason to visit Santorini and what you need to know before your first travel. So let’s get a bit more specific now and see what can be done in Santorini during a great long weekend trip! Let’s say… 10 recommendations? Check below!

OUR LONG WEEKEND TRIP TO SANTORINI

Is a long weekend enough for visiting Santorini? Of course, when one is traveling, time is never enough! On the other hand, if you can visit Santorini for four days, you would enjoy it for sure! I love ‘compressed travels!

Santorini: the best ideas for the long weekend trip

They give me a chance to experience a new place, to taste it, and leave the feeling of not enough, often wanting me to return one more day.

Our travel to Santorini, indeed, was a long weekend trip. We were lucky to get great plane tickets which allowed us to enjoy this Greek island for nearly four full days. You can explore  WizzAir  and  Ryanair  flight options in Europe. I was so happy to know that WizzAir started to fly from my city, Gdansk to Santorini on my birthday! The best gift!

Our flight to Santorini departed from Gdansk at 6 am. We landed in Greece at 10 am, enjoying over there entire Friday! On the way back, we had a late afternoon flight. It was a perfect time for a stay in Oia with the option of visiting twice Thira and once Imerovigli. What can one do in Santorini during a long weekend other than famous views and sunsets? 🙂

Let me share with you a bit!

THE BEST IDEAS FOR A GREAT LONG WEEKEND TRIP

1. wander around.

Santorini: the best ideas for the long weekend trip Oia view

On purpose, I am going to ignore the views and sunsets in this post. That’s the core part of Santorini. You can’t miss it for sure. But related to this is wandering. Go out and enjoy an aimless walk. Villages in Santorini are full of backstreets and bypaths, full of unique buildings, spots, and colors. You will also find many small cafes, art galleries or small shops. And the flowers!

2. VILLAGES HOPPING

During our visit to Santorini, four days stay, we visited Oia (where we stayed), twice Thira and once Imerovigli. I am not counting the times when we went to the airport. 🙂 With no doubt, Santorini’s villages’ hopping is one of the top things I would recommend doing! Although part of the same island, each village is so unique and worth seeing! Are you worried about transportation costs? Check my previous blog post . Using public transport in Santorini is great and cheap!

If you happen to stay in Thira (Fira) or visit it for at least half a day, opt for a boat cruise! From the Old Port of Fira, many cruises take place daily. Your hotel might suggest you some yachts cruises or other personalized trips. These seem fantastic, yet if too long or too expensive, go for the local boat tours. They might start at 20 euros! Two options/examples are below:

  • Santorini Volcano and Hot Springs Boat Tour
  • Santorini Volcano Boat Tour including Hot Springs & Therasia

4. DONKEY RIDE

Santorini Donkey Ride

I didn’t expect a donkey ride in Santorini! I have seen many donkeys during my travels, yet haven’t ridden on any before; horses, camels, elephants – yes, but not donkeys. As I love new things, I didn’t wait long to try! Where can you find donkeys rides in Santorini? There are two ‘useful’ spots to get a donkey ride. In Oia, it is on the way to the Ammoudi Bay while in Thira, to the Old Port. Both places are pathways full of stairs (278 and 588, respectively), so getting a donkey’s ride might help you to relax a bit. And experience something new!

5. WINE TASTING

Are you in love with good wine? Or maybe enjoy sipping it during the holidays? Then don’t miss the wine tasting tour in Santorini! At least try a few! Wines in Santorini have a volcanic origin, combining crisp acidity with intense minerality and salinity. They are vibrant, with citrus aromas. Which ones? You can read about it here.

Back to the wine tasting activities! You can select from many tours offerings! Some options:

  • Santorini Wine Adventure
  • Santorini Wine Tour
  • Get Your Guide

Short of time or funds for the wine tasting tour? If you plan to buy some wine, then visit a winery shop (or two!). They will often make you experience a small wine tasting! You can try different wines and pick up the one to take home or enjoy during your stay in Santorini!

6. SCUBA DIVING

Santorini Scuba Diving

If you feel like doing something more exciting during your stay in Santorini, then go for the scuba diving! Diving in the Greek islands is very popular, hence available in many locations. One highlight: scuba diving in Santorini, since it is a volcanic island, is not about marine life but the underwater landscape.

Useful tip! Try to check in advance available offers and compare them. As the prices are higher, you might also want to negotiate! It works! My Better Half and our Bigger Angel instead of 120 euro per person, paid 70 euro. That covered only one dive. However, during the diving, they were allowed to do two dives! Great offer and flexibility.

7. ROCKS SWIMMING

Maybe diving isn’t your thing, or you might have less time or funds? Don’t worry! If you like swimming, try some rocks swimming in Santorini. Since it is a volcanic island, there are many natural beaches or places you can explore by swimming between the rocks. For example, if you stay in Oia, go down to Ammoudi Bay. Then go left to the rocks area. Over there, you will find a few spots to swim in the turquoise water! Enjoy!

8. SHOPPING

Santorini: the best ideas for the long weekend trip, shopping

I know that I wrote about shopping already in my previous blog post. Yet, I can’t skip it here! 🙂

Some small shopping is nearly a must when visiting Santorini, no matter for how many days. Want to read more about it? Check my previous blog post. Just a teaser part of it below.

‘ If you plan to shop a bit (or a bit more :-)) consider visiting Thira (Fira). There are plenty of shops there and the same products, for example, compared to Oia, are much cheaper. You can spend a great day there, first shopping a bit and then admiring one of the best sunsets in the world!

Also, check with someone locally or cross-check on the GPS for any supermarket. You can buy some local products there too and both the selections and prices will be more convenient!

9. EAT & ADMIRE

Before traveling to Santorini, I wasn’t sure if I should pre-book any of the restaurants. All I managed to understand: it might be crowded, especially in the Old Castle sunset spot. And let me help you: don’t worry about the restaurants with amazing views. They are unlimited! The choice is excellent, both when it comes to their offer and the view coverage. So if you can, avoid eating inside your hotel and go out. Start with a yummy breakfast, or maybe grab just a coffee. In Santorini, one is sure: excellent food comes with fantastic views!

10. CHILL OUT

santorini weekend trip

Undecided which hotel to choose in Santorini? My dream was a hotel in Oia with sunset, caldera, and Oia village view. And to be able to enjoy these views from a pool or a jacuzzi! There are many hotels and accommodations in Santorini. And you might feel even undecided about where to stay. That’s how we felt! I was so happy with our choice, Sole d’Oro Villa . An amazing place to stay in Oia! We had all the views we wanted, plus two jacuzzis outside, all just for us. So check if the pool/jacuzzi option is available. See if you prefer these to be private or shared. One is sure: you will need one of them to chill out and experience these wonderful vibes of Santorini!

Happy is a choice we make. I choose Santorini.

BONUS ITEM – PHOTO SESSION

If you dream about a flying dress photo session in Santorini, your dream can come true! Two options: or you organize it by yourself, bringing some fancy dress with you. Or you buy a package photo session there on the spot (or in advance, of course). Photo sessions in Santorini are pretty expensive. If one dreams about it, it is worth it! For sure, the views and the setting are unique in the world! Two links here: Miss Santorini Flying Dress and Santorini Dress .

So when are you planning on visiting Santorini? Or maybe you are already back? Share what you would love to do or what do you recommend to first-time travelers! I am sure that my list isn’t complete. 🙂 Efcharisto!

Moments that matter, no matter the ideas.

First time Santorini: top tips to have the best time on this famed Greek isle

Dec 7, 2021 • 5 min read

Santorini is a dazzling star of the Greek Islands, and it's extremely popular with tourists © Andrew Mayovskyy / Shutterstock

Santorini is the supermodel of the Greek islands, a head-turner whose face is instantly recognizable around the world: multicolored cliffs soar out of a sea-drowned volcanic crater, topped by whitewashed buildings.

With its reputation for dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets and volcanic-sand beaches, it’s hardly surprising Santorini features on so many travelers’ bucket lists.  If you're planning to join the crowd, here’s what you need to know for your first trip to Santorini .

Part of the Cyclades island group, Santorini (officially known as Thira, a name that encompasses the volcanic islets within Santorini’s orbit) sits in the Aegean Sea, roughly halfway between Athens and Crete.

The island is shaped like a wonky croissant, and the neighboring islets hint at the fact that Santorini was once circular. It was known as Strongili (the Round One). Thousands of years ago, a huge volcanic eruption caused the center of Strongili to sink, leaving a caldera (or crater) with towering cliffs along the east side, now Santorini’s trademark landscape.

Whitewashed buildings on the island of Santorini, Greece

Beyond the views, Santorini's vineyards and volcanic beaches

Santorini’s commercial development is focused on the caldera-edge clifftops in the island’s west, with large clusters of whitewashed buildings nesting at dizzying heights, spilling down cliff-sides and offering gasp-inducing views from land or sea.  Fira , the island’s busy capital, sprawls north into villages called Firostefani (about a 15-minute walk from Fira) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera edge, about a 30-minute walk from Fira). A path running through these villages is lined with upmarket hotels, restaurant terraces and endless photo opportunities.

These three conjoined settlements draw most visitors, together with the stunning and quite exclusive village of Oia in Santorini’s north. There’s a growing number of hotels in the island’s south, offering caldera views to the north and northeast. Akrotiri’s views come cheaper than Oia’s, but it’s a fair way from the action of Fira.

Santorini’s east coast is lesser known than the celebrated, elevated west coast. Here, the caldera-edge heights have sloped down to sea level, and volcanic-sand beaches and resorts offer a very different drawcard. East coast resorts such as Kamari and Perissa have a more traditional (and more affordable) island-holiday appeal: sunlounger-filled beaches, water sports, bars and taverna-lined promenades. The east coast’s beaches are lined with black sand. On the south coast, there’s a string of beaches famed for their multi-colored sand. The dramatic Red Beach is a traveler favorite.

The island’s interior is dotted with vineyards and traditional villages that let you see beyond the tourist hustle. Make a stop in Pyrgos for great eats and a wander through charming backstreets.

Food, archaeology,  open-air cinema: things to do in Santorini

Sure, Santorini's views will stop you in your tracks and you'll get great glimpses into how A-listers travel, but there’s plenty more to explore, from a gorgeous open-air cinema to a cool microbrewery , wine caverns adorned with artworks, and cooking demonstrations and classes  that celebrate Santorini’s growing foodie culture.

The obvious prime activity on Santorini is to walk the caldera edge and admire the views. Walks in and around Fira are spectacular, particularly heading north to Firostefani and Imerovigli along the caldera-edge pathway. Keep walking and you’ll eventually reach Oia, but be aware that this is no small undertaking and the trail beyond Imerovigli can be rough. It’s about 5.6 miles (9km) in all, and a good four-hour walk, one way.

Santorini’s lauded wines are its crisp dry whites and the amber-colored, unfortified dessert wine known as Vinsanto. Both are made from the indigenous grape variety, assyrtiko . About a dozen local vineyards host tastings (usually with a small charge) and some offer food, with scenery and local produce combining to great effect. Start your investigations at  SantoWines .

Santorini’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating site of Akrotiri displaying a Minoan city destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1613 BC. In Fira, the impressive Museum of Prehistoric Thera helps piece together the story of ancient Akrotiri.

Nature’s handiwork is on display from any waterfront seat come sundown, but prime sunset-viewing on Santorini is in Oia, where thousands of tourists flock to admire (and applaud) nightfall.

Any tour your heart desires can be organized, and there are dozens of agencies ready to help with winery visits, archaeology tours, sunset-watching and more. The most popular option is a cruise, and the classic itinerary takes in the caldera’s volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni, including a stop at the former’s crater and the latter’s hot springs.

Accommodation with a view in Santorini comes at a price

If you can afford it, first-timers to Santorini should stay on the caldera edge to experience the full "wow" factor. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia have hotels and villas with whitewashed interiors, terraces and infinity pools that have inspired marriage proposals, high-fashion photo shoots and many Instagram posts.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to stay in these view-blessed locales for budget-conscious travelers: caldera-view accommodations come at a premium, and they are in hot demand. You'll also need to book well in advance.

There are decent midrange options in Fira and Firostefani (less so in Imerovigli and Oia), away from the front-row panoramas. There’s also a great hostel and a budget-friendly campground (with rooms) on the outskirts of Fira.

If you’re more interested in a beach break or activities, stay in Perissa or Kamari (and catch the bus into Fira). The advantage of this is some respite from the camera-toting caldera crowds, plus more reasonable prices.

The best times to visit Santorini without the crowds

Peak travel time to Santorini is July and August, when prices soar and hotels, viewpoints and beaches are packed with tourists. The shoulder season months of April, May, early June, late September and October are better times to visit. Things are marginally quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably quieter on the east coast (where accommodation bargains are plentiful).

Don’t discount a winter break, when crowds are scarce (and prices low) while the scenery is still breathtaking. Santorini is working on positioning itself as a year-round destination.

Tourists board the ferry to Santorini island at the port of Heraklion, Greece

Reach Santorini by ferry, catamaran or plane

Frequent ferries and high-speed catamarans link Santorini with Athens’ main port of Piraeus, Crete and various Cycladic islands. Check  OpenSeas  for ferry timetables. Santorini Airport has year-round flight connections with Athens, and summertime European connections. On the island, bus services are decent, if crowded in summer. Lots of companies also offer cars, mopeds and ATV four-wheeler bikes to rent.

A Weekend in Santorini

Santorini (pop. 15,000) is even more beautiful than you’ve imagined, with strange red rock formations rising dramatically out of the sea, whitewashed blue-domed villages precariously perched on the island’s edge, the depressed caldera, a smattering of colorful beaches, those glowing sunsets, and sprawling archaeological sites. If you’re on a honeymoon or romantic getaway—or just exploring solo—here’s how to spend a weekend in Santorini:

Santorini

There are a few moments in life worth splurging on, and getting a room in Oia or Imerovigli with a view of the caldera is one of them. An entire day can (should) be spent lounging poolside and marveling at the view, but when you feel the need to stretch your legs:

Go for a walk in Oia. Surrounded by water on the northwestern tip of Santorini, Oia lives up to the hype. This might be one of the most beautiful villages in the world. The whitewashed houses carved into the red caldera, the sparkling blue hotel pools, and the tiny alleyways snaking through the village make for a truly unique place. If you need to escape the sun for a while, stop in the Kyrkos Art Gallery or the Musical Instrument Museum , where the friendly owner speaks English.

Head out on one of the most beautiful walks around Fira, the 600-step descent to the small port of Fira Skala . As you walk down the steps, the sea is laid out before you, with little fishing boats bobbing in the water; to your back is the caldera. There are signs pointing the way. Getting back up is more challenging. For those who would rather skip the workout, hop on the Santorini Cable Car, which scales the side of the island every 20 minutes. There are also donkeys that you can ride up, but the donkeys are suffering from carting a never-ending cycle of tourists, so give the donkeys a break and take the cable car.

Have dinner in Fira at the eccentric Koukoumavlos, one of the longest-lasting restaurants on Santorini and famous for its wildly creative dishes prepared by self-taught chef Nikos Pouliasis. This is one of the rare restaurants where the celebrity chef is actually in the kitchen. After identifying about 70 ingredients, we stopped counting. Dishes that seemed like they would never work—turkey with kumquats and a peanut butter chocolate lollipop, for instance—are deliciously executed. Come with an open mind and book the €74 tasting menu—an excellent value. Reservations are required.

An early morning can be spent quietly walking around Oia , before driving to the island’s center to visit archaeological ruins, visit some of Santorini’s finest wineries, and catch the sunset from a Venetian castle.

Wake up early in the morning to stroll through Oia. This is the best time to see Santorini’s jewel: before the crowds have woken up, when the streets are mostly empty and bathed in a soft pink light. After, return to your hotel for breakfast.

Head to Ancient Akrotiri for a walk through Santorini’s answer to Pompeii. At once destroyed and preserved by a massive volcanic eruption in 1450 BC, Akrotiri is a living reminder of the stunning contribution of the ancient Minoan civilization. The site was only uncovered in 1860, when the volcanic ash was dug out to be used for construction in the Suez Canal. Take your time walking through the streets of the ancient city. There are also guided tours available. You’ll see the crumbled walls of homes and shops, but also some objects— bed frames, pots, tiled floors, windows—that demonstrate just how alive this place was before the volcano erupted.

Stop for lunch at Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia. Located inside an old house (you can either sit on the terrace, with a view of Anafi island, or inside the vaulted rooms), Metaxi Mas is a delicious mix of Cretan and Santorini dishes. Dakos (Greek bruschetta), boiled wild greens, and raki are served alongside fava puree and white eggplants. Portions are copious, especially the salads, and though the mains tend toward the meat, there are plenty of vegetarian options.

Fortified, visit at least two of the area’s wineries, starting with Artemis Karamolegos. This is the place to try the sweet, lipsmackingly good vinsanto wine, a dessert variety native to Santorini. At Karamolegos, you can try a vinsanto that has been aged for 60 months! Make sure to also sample assyrtiko, a white Greek wine grape indigenous to Santorini.

If you’re looking to find a side of Santorini that hasn’t been completely dominated by tourism, drive up to nearby Pyrgos for an evening stroll. The former capital of Santorini, Pyrgos is probably the best preserved medieval settlement on the island. Though it’s becoming more of a tourist destination, Pyrgos is still under the radar and doesn’t draw nearly the same crowds as Fira and Oia . It’s a joy to walk through the village alleyways, stop in a platea (village square) for a cup of coffee and some people watching, and to see actual Santorini locals go about their business. Pyrgos is perched on a hill, and the view is just as spectacular as Oia. (Be sure to catch the sunset from the top of the village at Pyrgos Kastelli !)

Thanks in part to efforts by locals to revamp the cultural and culinary offerings in their town, a number of excellent restaurants have opened up here, including the award-winning Selene, where you should stop for dinner . There are two sections: a “meze and wine” bistro downstairs and a fine dining section upstairs, both located in a charming old house. Unless you’re celebrating something very special, the bistro—which has the same views, and an equally impressive menu—is a good (and more affordable) choice. Dishes in the fine dining restaurant include “tomato in a can” (about 5 different tastes of Santorini tomatoes), roasted pigeon, and fava foam on a “seabed.” At the wine bar, try the grilled octopus with fava and smoked tuna.

Fira , Santorini’s capital, is one of the best places to see on the island.

During your trip to Santorini, you certainly want to

  • Discover the famous white and blue houses
  • Wander in picturesque narrow alleys
  • Enjoy chic boutiques and luxury hotels with infinity pools
  • Admire magnificent views of the caldera.

Well, you’re lucky: Fira has all of this!

It’s the perfect Cycladic town, a real postcard scenery.

Wander in the city’s alleys and discover the breathtaking viewpoints of the sea and the caldera. You will for sure fall in love with the island (even if it’s often crowded!).

From Fira, follow the beautiful walking trail to reach the villages of Firostefani (only a 10-minute walk) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera, 30 minutes away from Fira). Plan at least between 1 and 2 hours , as you will stop every 2 meters to enjoy the view and take pictures!

You can also walk to the small port of Fira Skala. It’s quite easy to get down the 587 steps, but getting back up can be more difficult, especially under the sun!

If you’re too tired to walk, take Santorini’s cable car. During this nice ride, you will admire the island from a different angle. A one way ticket costs 6€.

You can also get a ride on a donkey, but I wouldn’t recommend it, as the animals are often abused.

If you’re a History lover, or if you want to know more about Santorini, you can visit 2 museums in Fira:

  • The Museum of Prehistoric Thera , exposing vestiges discovered in Akrotiri (I will tell you more about it later) and other archaeological excavations on Santorini.
  • The archaeological museum  and its collection of remains from all Santorini, including vases from Akrotiri.

Fira is also a great place to enjoy the nightlife in Santorini: you will find the island’s best bars, restaurants and night clubs!

Try to visit Fira early in the morning, to avoid most of the crowd. The temperatures will be cooler and your stroll will be more pleasant.

Fira

Together with Fira, Oia is the other must-see tourist attraction in Santorini.

As in Fira, you will be amazed by Oia’s pretty white houses, churches with a blue dome, and splendid views over the entire caldera!

Oia is also known as the best place to enjoy the sunset in Santorini . At the end of the day, thousands of people are coming to the city for Santorini’s most famous show.

When you’ve found the perfect spot to admire the sunset, sit down and don’t leave it!

And if you’re looking for a quieter and more romantic atmosphere, you should book a table in one of the many bars and restaurants . Watching the sunset while enjoying a drink is for sure an amazing experience.

Just keep in mind that you’ll be asked for a minimum order amount per person. Don’t worry: as the drinks are quite expensive, this amount will be easy to reach.

The best place to watch the sunset in Oia is the Byzantine Castle. Be there at least 1 or 2 hours before, so you can get a good spot.

Santorini

Boat trips are among the best things to do in Santorini.

The most famous tour is a 1-day cruise in the volcanic islands and Palea Kamini hot springs.

During this day, you will explore the island of Nea Kameni and its still active volcano. You can even walk to the summit of the crater!

You will also stop at Palea Kameni hot springs to take a dip.

Then, you will end your day on Thirassia island, located right in front of Santorini.

As these tours are very popular, you should really book yours in advance. It’s very easy, you just have to click on the button below to view the cruise details and book it. For only 37€ per person, you will get the bus transfer from and to your hotel, an audio guide, the cruise and the 3 stops at the volcano, the hot springs and Thirassia!

Boat trip Santorini

You can also choose a luxury version of this cruise, on a catamaran.

You will sail around Santorini, and enjoy 3 stops for swimming, including one at the hot springs. Snorkeling equipment is even included!

The price includes the minibus transfer from your hotel, the guided tour, the Greek Barbecue and unlimited soft drinks.

At the end of the day, you will also admire the beautiful sunset from the sea.

You’re going to Santorini?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

The closer you get to your travel dates, the harder it will be to get a good deal. Lots of people will be visiting Santorini on the same dates as you , so you can be sure that the best deals are booked extremely quickly!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Santorini.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

To check the current best deals for your hotel in Santorini, simply click on the green button below 😎:

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Santorini!

excursion catamaran santorin

If you want to enjoy magnificent viewpoints of the island and the caldera, you should hike from Fira to Oia.

A 9-km long marked trail on the edge of the caldera connects the 2 cities. You will stop many times to take beautiful pictures, as the view is just breathtaking! It’s clearly one of Santorini’s best points of interest.

This marked trail isn’t really difficult, even if the weather can get really hot on sunny days.  So, it’s better to hike in the morning or at the end of the day. You can for example plan your walk to arrive in Oia for the sunset.

From Fira, you will reach Oia in about 2 hours . You should however plan a bit more time, as you will for sure stop a few times on the way to enjoy the panorama and take pictures.

For the hike, it’s easier to park your car in Imerovigli than in Fira: there will be more parking spaces. As you will only walk from Imerovigli to Oia, you will do the Fira-Imerovigli part of the trail when visiting Fira.

You should hike from Fira to Oia, and not from Oia to Fira. The most beautiful part is the view over Oia at the end of the trail.

hiking-Fira-Oia

It’s impossible to do a definitive guide about Santorini without mentioning the best beaches of the island.

If you want to take a dip in Santorini, the most famous beaches are:

  • The beaches of Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios: large black sand beaches with snacks and taverns
  • Kamari Beach, another large black sand beach, where you can rent deckchairs and enjoy many nautical activities.
  • The Red Beach, named after the volcanic ochre cliffs surrounding it. You can get there in only 5 minutes by a trail.
  • The White Beach, right next to the Red Beach. You will need take a boat to get there.
  • Vlihada Beach and its white rocks.
  • Monilithos Beach, ideal with children with its shallow waters.
  • Kolumbo Beach, only accessible by foot, and frequented by nudists.

Red Beach Santorini

At the main beaches, you can also enjoy a few amazing water sports!

I won’t hide it, my favorite water sport in Santorini is for sure the 1h30 jet ski tour with an instructor.

You will also have the choice between several different routes starting from Périvolos. You will be able to discover the beaches and the volcano of Santorini!

It’s really an unforgettable experience that needs to be booked in advance by clicking on the button below:

During your trip to Santorini , you can also try other great activities. Simply click on the links to book them in advance (they are extremely popular):

  • Jet ski rental from the Perissa beach
  • A first dive with an experienced instructor or a dive on one of the most beautiful spots in Santorini if you’re an experienced diver.
  • A parasailing session , to enjoy a panoramic view of the island!
  • A kayak tour (small group), to discover the most beautiful landscapes of Santorini from the sea and without the crowds
  • A windsurfing course
  • A Stand Up Paddle excursion (always in small groups)
  • A Flyboard session or of Hoverboard , the 2 trendy activities on the island!
  • Take a kiteboarding course for beginners or rent a kiteboard if you are more experienced.

Amoudi Bay is a small fishing village located below Oia.

You can get there walking down the 300 steps stairway starting from Oia. You can also drive there, but if you do, don’t go to the end of the road, as it’s difficult to turn back. Just park your car along the road and finish on foot.

From Amoudi, the view of the ochre cliffs and Oia is really beautiful.

There are also a few nice taverns and restaurants on the seaside. It’s perfect if you like fresh fishes!

And, if you want to take a dip in the sea, follow the trail after the restaurants. You will find a nice place to swim and dive into the water.

Ammoudi Bay Santorin

Wine Tours are among the most popular activities in Santorini. The island is renowned for its excellent white wines, known as some of the best in Greece.

You can visit many vineyards (known for being the oldest in the world!) on the island, and taste the best wines.

Here is the program of the best wine tour in Santorini:

This wine tasting tour in Santorini lasts around 5 hours and allows you to visit several wineries . During your day, you will visit 3 vineyards:

  • Boutari vineyard
  •  Gavalas traditional winery
  • The Estate Argyros.

You will also taste a dozen of Santorini’s best wines, including the traditional Vinsanto and Nykteri!

This tour includes the transfer from your hotel, an Oenologist guide, and an access to the vineyards. You will be in a small group of 8 people maximum, making this semi-private visit really enjoyable.

For more information and to book your tour, simply click the button below (it must be booked in advanced).

Wine Santorini

If you’re interested in Santorini’s History, the ancient site of Akrotiri is one of the island’s best place to visit.

This archaeological site is often compared to Pompeii, in Italy . Akrotiri is an ancient Minoan city destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1,613 B.C. It was only rediscovered in 1967 during an archaeological excavation. The site is one of the most important in the Aegean Sea.

The archaeological excavations are still on going in this very large site. Many remains are probably still undiscovered!

In Akrotiri, wooden footbridges allow you to walk in the city. There, you will admire the ancient buildings, the streets and many ceramics.

Unlike Pompeii, the city of Akrotiri was uninhabited when the eruption occurred, as no human remains or valuable objects were found on the site. What happened to these people? No one knows yet if they moved elsewhere on the island, or sailed to Crete .

During your trip to Santorini, you will certainly go to Fira and Oia. But don’t miss the island’s other villages!

  • Pyrgos is Santorini’s highest village. It’s a typical Cycladic village, with a traditional architecture and splendid views of the island.
  • Megalochori, with its picturesque narrow alleys.
  • Messaria, in the middle of the island and the vineyards.
  • Emporio, where you will find the Goulas medieval castle at the village’s entrance. There are also many small churches.

villages Santorini

To visit some of the villages of Santorini and get off the beaten track, you should opt for a quad bike tour with a guide .

The itinerary is really nice since it allows you to go through places where you would not necessarily have ventured by yourself or by car.

You will discover, among others, Emporio and its Venetian castle , the village of Megalochori , and stop at many viewpoints overlooking the caldera. You will also enjoy a tasting session in the oldest wine cellar of Santorini.

The tour lasts 3h30 and is a small group tour with a maximum of 6 people, which makes this quad bike tour in Santorini even more enjoyable!

If you feel like taking advantage of your trip to Santorini to try other activities , you’ll find my selection of the best excursions and activities right here: The 17 best excursions in Santorini.

Wanna see Santorini from the most amazing viewpoint?

Let’s take some height and go on a helicopter tour in Santorini!

It is the best way to admire the splendid landscapes of the island, the caldera, the volcano and the traditional white houses of Oia and Fira.

And for an even more incredible experience, you can also opt for the sunset tour . From the sky will certainly be the only place on the island where you can admire the sunset without the crowds!

It’s really the perfect romantic activity, and a great idea for a surprise gift.

You need to book your helicopter tour of Santorini by clicking on the button below:

The Ancient Thera is another archaeological site in Santorini.

“Thera” is the ancient name of Santorini. In the Middle Ages, the island was then named “Santa Irini” by the Venetians which finally became “Santorini”.

Located on Mesa Vouno Hill, Thera was founded in the 9th century B.C. During your visit, you will admire many vestiges from the Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Take a stroll and discover the remains of the temples, the agora, the theatre and the gymnasium.

You will also enjoy a nice view of the surroundings.

Ancient Thera

The island of Thirassia is located just in front of Oia.

This crocodile-shaped island was separated from Santorini by a huge volcanic eruption.

If you want to visit Thirassia, you can choose a 1-day boat trip (the one going to Nea Kameni’s volcano and hot springs also stops there) or take the boat directly from Amoudi Bay.

The island is way quieter than Santorini. During your visit, you will enjoy the charming village of Manolas and its good taverns, and enjoy a splendid view of Santorini!

Thirassia

No matter if you’re on a family trip or a romantic gateway in Santorini, you should definitely go watch a movie at the open air Cinema.

The Kamari Open Air Cinema , or Cinekamari, is an outdoor movie theatre located in the middle of the forest. It’s a really original and nice place to watch a movie.

From May to October, you can see movies in English (subtitled in Greek) every night starting from 21h30. It costs 8€ per person.

There’s also a bar on the site.

Don’t hesitate to check the official website   for more information.

Outdoor movie theatre Santorini

If the cinema is a bit too classical for your taste for an evening in Santorini, you should rather head to the most famous show of the island: The Greek Wedding Show .

This open-air show skillfully mixes theater, comedy, music and typical Greek dances on the theme of a traditional wedding.

You will even be invited to the wedding banquet where you will be served an assortment of Greek mezze accompanied by fine Santorini wines. And you will not deviate from an old tradition of any good Greek wedding: breaking the plates!

The show is really of excellent quality, very entertaining and immersive . You will really feel like you have been invited to a wedding.

The Greek Wedding show takes place every night at 9:30 pm in Fira and lasts 2 hours.

You must book your seats in advance by clicking on the button below:

If you feel like doing a a bit of shopping in Santorini, it’s very simple: you will have to go to Oia or Fira .

The 2 most famous villages of Santorini concentrate all types of stores: clothing, luxury, jewelry and souvenirs . You can also find traditional Greek handicrafts and art galleries .

However, do not expect to find good deals because the prices are quite high compared to the rest of Greece.

What are the local specialties you should try?

Among the typical dishes of Santorini, you can try:

  • Bean puree made from a specific bean of the island, the fava
  • Tomato fritters made from a local tomato variety
  • Saganaki, cheese wrapped in filo pastry and fried
  • Minced meatballs
  • Moussaka , which is of course one of the most famous dish in Greece
  • Gyros, the best option for a cheap meal in Santorini!
  • Fish , which you can try in one of the taverns in Ammoudi or on the east coast of Santorini

If you’ve seen most of Santorini, you can take the ferry and visit the islands located nearby:

  • Ios, the closest island to Santorini. There, you can relax all day at the beach and party all night long.
  • Amorgos , the best place to hike, there are many marked trails.
  • The Small Cyclades , if you want to enjoy quieter and less touristic islands (at least for the moment!).
  • Naxos for its beautiful beaches
  • Mykonos, where you can dance all day and night long with the best DJs in the world!

If you want more details about the other islands around Santorini , you should read my detailed article: The 15 best Cyclades Islands .

You can also visit  this website   to check the ferries rates, schedules and book them.

Ideally, you should spend at least 3 days in Santorini. You can visit Fira and Oia on your 1st day, then explore the rest of the island, go on a tour, or relax at the beach during the next 2 days.

Here are my recommended Santorini itineraries depending on the duration of your stay:

You’re spending 1 day in Santorini? Then, you will have time to visit the island’s most famous villages!

Here are the best things to do in Santorini for 1 day:

  • Start your day in Fira. Visit the city, and go to Firostefani and Imerovigli, the 2 villages nearby.
  • Have a drink on a terrace, and stop in one of the 3 villages for lunch.
  • After a good meal, it’s time to hike from Imerovigli to Oia.
  • Then, visit the magnificent village of Oia.
  • If you still have some time (and if you’re not too tired!), walk down the stairs to Amoudi Bay.
  • Enjoy the sunset in Oia, the best place to admire it in Santorini.

If you don’t feel like walking too much, you can take a guided bus tour . You need to book it in advance here.

During the day, you will visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri , then stop at the Red Beach and discover the village of Emporio. You will also swim in Perissa, taste wines and admire the sunset in Oia.

This excursion is a great way to discover the best of Santorini in only 1 day!

For more details, you should read my dedicated article: One day in Santorini .

mill Santorin

If you have 2 days in Santorini , in addition to the first day described above, you should do a boat-trip to Nea Kameni. You will walk to the top of the volcano and take a dip in the hot springs.

You can book this tour by clicking here . And if you prefer a more luxury version in a catamaran, it’s right here!

This cruise is clearly a must-see attraction in Santorini!

You’ve planned 4 or 5 days in Santorini? You’re lucky! In addition to all the best places to see on the island, you will have time to take another tour, like Santorini wine tasting tour . You will taste 12 of the island’s best wines.

There are also other interesting activities to do in Santorini:

If you’re interested in Greek gastronomy , then you have to try  this 1-day tour . It combines a Greek cooking class with the tasting of local wines . Needless to say it’s amazing 😍.

And if you’re a photography lover , book a tour of the island’s most beautiful places with a professional photographer. It’s clearly magical!  You must book it in advance right here.

Where to stay in Santorini

You must know that  staying in Santorini,  especially in the villages of the  caldera like Oia and Fira , is  quite expensive.

And of course, even more in Santorini than in any other place,  book your hotels as early as possible!

To help you choose, I have made  a selection of the   best hotels in Santorini , depending on where you want to stay and your budget.

  • Aethrio Hotel:  Located in Oia, only a few steps away from the main square. You can rent double rooms, studio flats or apartments with balcony for most of them. You’ll enjoy large suites with a view of the caldera, private balcony and private hot tub or pool, starting from 800€ with breakfast included. Strong points: the idyllic scenery and the calm.  It’s my recommendation for a one-week romantic stay in Greece!
  • Katikies Hotel – The Leading Hotels of the World:  This luxurious hotel offers rooms and suites with a great view, bathtub and spa. The price starts from 1000€ with breakfast included. What I loved: the pools, the spas, the splendid views and the food!  It’s my recommendation for a luxury stay in Santorini!

Wondering where to eat in Santorini? What are the best restaurants in Santorini?

If you want to enjoy authentic cuisine (and avoid the many touristy restaurants), I recommend you:

  • Pitogyros, a tavern located in Oia and serving mainly gyros. Very good, fresh and not greasy, it’s approved by Voyage Tips!
  • Karma: a restaurant located in Oia serving an excellent cuisine at an affordable price for Santorini. I recommend their tomato fritters, fava with caramelized onions and moussaka!
  • Romantica in Firostefani: a good traditional cuisine, a very pleasant welcome, hearty and tasty dishes, we do not ask for more.
  • The cave of Nikolas: restaurant located at the waterfront in the old port of Akrotiri. A must if you like fish!

If you want to eat in any restaurant in Santorini, you should better have a reservation!

Most restaurants located on the caldera are far from being better than the ones located a little further away. Don’t be mistaken: you are only charged for the view and not for the quality of the food.

If you want to visit Santorini, you have 2 possibilities to get there:

  • By plane: Santorini has an international airport. Many companies offers direct flights, or connecting flights via Athens . The airport is located only 10 minutes away from Fira and 25 minutes from Oia.
  • By ferry boat: you can take the ferry from the Port of Piraeus (close to Athens) to Santorini. The journey times varies depending on the boats size and speed. It takes between 5h30 and 8h, and the prices are starting from 40€ per person.

There are also daily ferry connections between Santorini and other Greek Islands. You can get there from Naxos , Paros , Mykonos, Amorgos …

If you want to plan a ferry trip in Greece, and especially in the very touristic island of Santorini, you should book your tickets in advance.

Click the button below to check the schedules, compare prices and book your ferry tickets.

If you haven’t rented a car for your trip to Santorini, (personally, I recommend you to rent a car to make the most of your stay – more about it below), you should book a transfer from Santorini airport or port in advance .

It’s the easiest way to be taken directly to your accommodation on the island upon arrival. This will save you from waiting for a bus or a cab.

Book your airport or port transfer by clicking here!

If you want to visit Santorini, you should really rent a car. It’s the most practical way to discover the island, especially if you’re staying a few days. You can also rent a quad bike to reach some remote beaches, but in general, you can get everywhere in Santorini by car.

One of the nice surprises I had during my trip to Santorini is that all the parking spaces are free!

Whenever I’m renting a car abroad, whether I’m in Greece, in Malta or in Spain, I always book my cars on Rentalcars.com . It’s my favorite website for the following reasons:

  • You can compare prices between all the car rental companies in Santorini. Choose the cheapest, or the one with the best customer’s reviews!
  • You can get a “Full Protection Insurance” to be fully refunded in case of accident or theft (They have refunded me more than 1200 euros to date)
  • Cancel or modify your booking in 1 click!

Last but not least: they offer the “Best Price Guarantee” . If you find the same car cheaper elsewhere, they will refund you the difference! Click the button below to check rental cars prices in Santorini now:

On Voyagetips.com , I give you all my best tips and itineraries to plan your trip to Santorini and Greece by yourself. (Click here to read all my articles about Greece)

However, if you prefer to book a Greece tour with a travel agency , I recommend you to check the 10 best Greece tours by clicking the button below:

If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your trip to the Greek islands, you should book it with Samboat.

Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small boats without a license, with or without a skipper: they simply have the most complete offer for boat rental.

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip in Greece? 😊

I have made a tourist map of Santorini for you , to help you picture what the island looks like and where the best places to visit are located. You can display the map legend by clicking on the top left button (the one with a little arrow).

The wine island, the five islands that form santorini were created through volcanic activity, making this crescent-shaped jewel a scenic marvel in the aegean sea..

An active volcano (not to worry, the last big eruption was more than 3,000 years ago) as well as a dream romantic destination, Santorini’s stunning scenery is legendary. Villages and vineyards perch in volcanic cliffs overlooking a crystal-blue sea, and dazzling sunsets end each day in a golden glow.

More About Santorini

Undoubtedly the most extraordinary island in the Aegean, crescent-shape Santorini remains a mandatory stop on the Cycladic tourist route—even if it's necessary to enjoy the sensational sunsets from Ia, the fascinating excavations, and the dazzling white towns with a million other travelers. Called Kállisti (the "Loveliest") when first settled, the island has now reverted to its subsequent name of Thira, after the 9th-century BC Dorian colonizer Thiras. The place is better known, however, these days—outside Greece, that is—as Santorini, a name derived from its patroness, St. Irene of Thessaloniki, the Byzantine empress who restored icons to Orthodoxy and died in 802.

In July and August, the Cyclades are crowded and less personal and more expensive than they are at other times of the year. Walkers, nature lovers, and devotees of classical and Byzantine Greece would do better to come in spring and fall, ideally in late April through June or September through October, when temperatures are lower and the islands are less tourist-riddled. In late March the islands begin to burst with thousands of varieties of wildflowers, and sprightly crimson poppies dapple stern marble blocks; the sea begins to warm up for comfortable swimming in late May. Autumn's days are shorter, but the sea remains alluringly swimmable well into October. Autumn travel to the islands also brings rustic pleasures: grapes are pressed in September, and zesty olives are gathered and fields plowed in October.

Top Experiences

Sunset in Oia : This will be a tourist heavy activity, but the sunsets and views are amazing. If it is too busy, try Imerovigli instead.

Black Sand Beaches : Try Perivolos and Perissa for an enjoyable day at the beach with lots of amenities. The areas are lined with cafes, shops, restaurants, and beach bars.

Ancient Thira : The remains of an ancient city that was inhabited 2,000 years ago. You can drive the narrow road with many hairpin turns or take a bus from Kamari so you don’t have to worry about the drive.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site : An ancient Minoan settlement that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C. It was buried in ash like Pompeii in Italy. Modern excavation has been ongoing since 1967. Many beautiful frescoes and objects have been found.

Boat tour : Sunset cruise or afternoon excursion in the caldera of Santorini. Many offer dinner, drinks and possibly the chance to go swimming or snorkeling.

8 of the best day trips in Santorini, Greece (without a car)

Posted on Last updated: April 18, 2024

Eight great day trips in Santorini, Greece – from unspoilt villages and buried cities to beach resorts and sunset spots – all of which you can visit without a car, either using public transport or on a tour.

8 of the best day trips in Santorini, Greece (without a car)

The gorgeous Greek island of Santorini is one of the country’s most popular destinations, with those iconic views of clifftop villages overlooking the Aegean. But as well as soaking up the caldera views, there’s plenty more to see on the island, from relaxing on black-sand beaches and visiting traditional Greek villages to boat trips to nearby islands.

Santorini’s fairly compact size makes it ideal for exploring on day trips, and its bus and ferry connections mean you don’t need to hire a car to get around the island. So here are eight of my favourite day trips in Santorini without a car, with details of how to visit each place independently as well as tour options if you don’t want to do-it-yourself.

Note: Public transport details start from Santorini’s capital Fira, so if you’re staying elsewhere on the island you may need to get the bus to Fira first.

Map of day trips in Santorini

Beautiful Oia is Santorini’s picture-perfect spot with its pastel-painted houses, windmills and domed churches spilling down the hillside. It’s one of the most popular places to stay on the island, but if you’re staying elsewhere it’s definitely worth visiting on a day trip.

Take a stroll around Oia’s narrow streets for one photo opportunity after another, from houses draped with pink bougainvillia to church towers silhouetted against the blue Aegean Sea. It’s a good place to wander around and see what you find, with lots of cafés, rooftop bar, art galleries and boutique shops selling local crafts to stop off in.

There are plenty of panoramic viewspoints, including the Castle of St Nicholas and the blue-domed churches. And don’t miss a famous Oia sunset, though the town is the most popular place on the island to watch the sun go down so it can get very busy.

The cliffside village of Oia in Santorini, Greece

Go independent

Oia is easy to reach from Santorini’s main town Fira (Thera) . Buses to Oia leave from Fira’s bus station around every 30 minutes. The journey takes 25 minutes and costs €2 one way (cash payment only). There can be big queues for the bus in high season so if you don’t want to wait you can also take a taxi to Oia which costs €30–€40 one way.

Or if you’re feeling energetic you can walk the 10km/6 miles from Fira to Oia along the edge of the caldera. The walk takes around 3 hours and has fantastic views along the way.

Take a tour

Most Santorini tours include a stop in Oia. You can visit as part of a full-day island highlights trip * which ends with sunset in Oia. Or there’s a half-day tour * designed for cruise passengers, which visits Oia as well as Megalochori and a black sand beach.

Windmills in Oia

2. Akrotiri

Known as Santorini’s Pompeii, Akrotiri was once a prosperous Minoan port city on a trade route between Europe and the Middle East. But around 1600 BC it was buried beneath 200 feet of ash when a giant volcanic eruption blew the middle right out of Santorini.

Akrotiri was forgotten about until the 1860s when quarry workers dug down and found some of its ancient artefacts. Excavations started properly in 1967 and are still carrying on today, with just a third of the site uncovered. The Akrotiri archaeological site is open to the public and gives a fascinating insight into what life was like for the Minoans.

The town was surprisingly advanced, with houses built over two and three storeys with underfloor heating, hot and cold running water and even indoor toilets. And the ash has helped preserve original features like frescoes and clay pots. Now open to the public, the site is one of the best day trips in Santorini to learn about the island’s history.

The ruined city of Akrotiri in Santorini

Buses run from Fira’s bus station to Akrotiri and take around 20 minutes, costing €2 each way. Entry to Akrotiri archaeological site costs €12 adults/€6 concessions. The ruins are just a short walk from the Red Beach so it’s easy to combine the two.

You can also take a day tour * which includes bus transfers to Akrotiri with stops at the Prophet Elias Monastery, Megalochori, the Red Beach and black-sand Perivolos beach.

Minoan artefacts in Santorini

Once the capital of Santorini, the medieval village of Pyrgos lies on the slopes of Mount Profitis Ilias, surrounded by vineyards. Pyrgos is Santorini’s highest point and right at its peak is the Venetian Kasteli Castle, with 360-degree views across the island.

Pyrgos is a great place to come for sunset away from the crowds, with some good traditional Greek restaurants. There are also 40 churches around the village and the Santorini of the Past Museum, where you can find out about the island’s traditional way of life.

Pyrgos is also close to Santo Wines , which is one of Santorini’s best-known wineries, who make reds, whites, rosés and Vinsanto dessert wine. Their winery is set on the edge of the caldera and has stunning views of the cliffs from its terrace. You can do a winery tour and tasting of four wines for €62, and there’s also a restaurant, shop and deli.

Views from Pyrgos in Santorini

You can reach Pyrgos by bus from Fira. Catch the regular bus towards Perissa (not the express bus which doesn’t stop in Pyrgos). It takes around 10 minutes and costs €2. Buses also stop at Santo Wines, or it’s a 15-minute walk from Pyrgos to the winery.

A visit to Pyrgos is included in a day tour * of Santorini’s Venetian Castles, along with stops in Emporio, Akrotiri and Oia. Or you can take a private tour * which starts in Pyrgos before visiting the Wine Museum and doing a wine tasting before finishing in Oia.

Baklava and local wine in Santorini

4. Megalochori

One of Santorini’s lesser-known spots, the hillside village of Megalochori was once the haunt of pirates who plundered the seas around Santorini. Today it’s a peaceful spot with narrow cobbled streets, squares lined with tavernas and church bell towers.

Megalochori was founded in the 17th century but many of the village’s older buildings were destoyed by an earthquake in 1956. Since then it’s been restored to its former glory and you can see some of the village’s historic highlights like its traditional cave houses and the mansion houses built with high walls and thick walls to keep out pirates.

Just outside Megalochori is a viewpoint known as the Heart of Santorini. This heart-shaped (ish) naturally carved hole in the rock looks out across the bay and is a favourite spot for loved-up couples to take photos, especially around sunset.

Megalochori church, Greece

Buses from Fira to both Akrotiri and Perissa stop in Megalochori along the way, with the journey taking around 10 minutes and costing €2.

There are no tours of Megalochori village itself, but you can visit the Venetsanos Winery on the edge of the village as part of a half-day wine tou r *.

The Heart of Santorini rock formation

The seaside town of Perissa sits on the southeast coast of Santorini and is one of the island’s top beach resorts. Don’t expect golden sands though – Santorini’s volcanic geology means that instead Perissa has black sand, which contrasts with its clear blue waters.

If you fancy a beach day, Perissa is a classic beach resort, with sunbeds and umbrellas for hire and watersports like jetskiing or parasailing. The beach is lined with tavernas where you can grab lunch or a drink, and there are more bars and restaurants in town.

From Perissa you can also visit the ruins of Ancient Thera. This archaeological site on the top of Mesa Vouno Mountain was an important city in the 9th century, with the remains of buildings from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. To reach Ancient Thera, follow the trail from the end of the beach, which takes around an hour.

Perissa black sand beach, Santorini Greece

Buses run from Fira’s bus station to Perissa, with both regular and faster express services. The journey takes around 20 minutes and costs €2.50 one way.

You can also visit Perissa as part of a full-day island highlights tour * which also stops at Prophet Elias Monastery, Emporio, Pyrgos, the Wine Museum and Oia.

6. Thirassia

Santorini’s little sister, Thirassia (also known as Therasia) was created when the eruption of 1600 BC blew the centre out of the island. Thirassia is only a mile offshore from Santorini but it’s a real contrast, swapping the cosmopolitan bars, hotels and restaurants for a quieter, slower pace of life, with only around 300 full-time residents.

Steps from the port take you up to Thirassia’s main town, Manolas, which is built on top of the caldera. Its traditional Cycladic houses and peaceful streets feel like going back in time to what Santorini would have been like 50 years ago. There are a couple of cafés and tavernas where you can stop off for lunch with views across to Santorini.

You can also follow walking paths through the unspoilt volcanic landscape to the hilltop church of Profitis Ilias and explore traditional small villages – including Agrilia and Potamos which have cave houses and wine cellars built into the rocks.

santorini weekend trip

You can reach Thirassia by ferry from the port of Ammoudi below Oia. The ferry takes around 10 minutes to reach Rivas, Thirassia’s new port. There are also larger car ferries running from Athinios, the main port in Santorini, a few times a week. Once you’re on the island, there’s a local minibus which runs to Manolas and the main villages.

There are also lots of boat tours to Thirassia, though most don’t actually give you time on the island, other than this full-day trip * which also includes Palea and Nea Kameni.

Colourful boats in Thirassia Santorini

7. Palea Kameni & Nea Kameni

Volcanic activity on Santorini also created the two islands of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni, which you can see in the middle of the caldera. Their name translates as old and new burnt island, and it’s a pretty good description of their barren, lunar landscape with its black lava rocks and fumaroles emitting steaming gas, where almost nothing grows.

Palea Kamini was formed around 2000 years ago and is known for its hot springs. You can relax in the therapeutic mineral-rich waters, which are heated to 35°C and tinged a rusty yellow colour by high levels of sulphur, and cover yourself in mud.

Nea Kamini was formed more recently, with new lava flows adding to it right up until 1950 – making it one of the world’s youngest islands. This uninhabited island is a protected geological park, and you can still see signs of volcanic activity all around you. Take a 20-minute hike up to the crater and you can look down at the molten lava below.

Looking out at the islands of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni from Santorini

Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni are only accessible by sea, so the only way to visit the islands independently would be to hire a boat .* A range of different size and type of boats are available to hire with or without a skipper through SamBoat. And you could also combine the islands with other spots like the Red Beach near Akrotiri or Perissa.

There are several Santorini day trips to Palea and Nea Kameni, often on board traditional wooden boats. This day tour * departs from Athinios Port and stops in Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni and Thirassia, with an optional Oia add-on. Or you can take a sunset cruise * to the islands which also includes a buffet dinner and local wine on board.

Nea Kameni volcanic island in Santorini

Another of the Cyclades group of islands, Ios is one of the closest to Santorini so it’s possible to visit for the day. Ios has a reputation as one of Greece’s top party islands, but if you steer clear of peak season in July and August things are a lot more relaxed.

The heart of Ios is the main town, known as Chora, set on a hilltop with a maze of narrow streets, bougainvillea-draped houses and sleepy cats. Ios has 365 churches – one for each day of the year – and if you climb to the highest point in Chora you’ll find four of them at the peak, with views down to the port and out over the Aegean.

Ios has some beautiful golden sand beaches, including Mylopotas Beach where you’ll find beach clubs, bars and restaurants. It’s also a hub for watersports, with paddleboards, kayaks and boats for hire so you can explore the coastline’s smaller coves.

Several ferry * companies make the journey from Santorini’s Athinios port to Ios. The port is 8km south of Fira, with buses connecting to two taking 20 minutes and costing €2.50 one way. From Athinios there are a mix of regular and high-speed ferries – with the quickest taking 40 minutes. Sailings get very busy in summer so book in advance.

Once in Ios there’s a bus which connects the port to the main town Chora (which is up a steep hill) and Mylopotas Beach, which costs €1.60 one way.

There are no organised day trips from Santorini to Ios. But if you got the ferry across you could then take a speedboat tour * which visits seven different beaches.

It was an absolute pleasure working with Anthony & his entire team from the very start of our planning our vacation to Greece all the way through of traveling back home to Chicago. Anthony & his team ensured our entire trip was seamless. We started in Athens for 24 hours, then to Mykonos for 4 days and then Santorini for 4 days. The planning & attention to detail made the whole trip one of the best travel experiences of our life. Anthony & his team were referred to us by a couple of other friends who had also worked with them for their vacations to Greece over the past few years & we will continue referring Anthony to anyone we know who is traveling to Greece because of our incredible experience!

Best Santorini Tour Packages in 2024

What makes santorini an exceptional retreat.

A small, enchanting island in Greece, Santorini is an eclectic blend of traditional culture and romantic beauty. The turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea complement the breathtaking locale. The scenic charm of the surroundings would turn your holidays into a dream visit. Santorini tour packages give you enough reasons to visit the Greek island – the sunsets, the beaches, the food and history. Think of architecture with old-world charm or bright profusion of colours and you have it here. The captivating beauty of Santorini holiday packages can turn into photographers’ paradise.

The exclusive island-specific food and wine complement the attraction of the Greek beaches. The century-old vineyards and the delicious Greek fare is sure to make way to the heart through your stomach. Many Santorini tour packages revolve around food and wine trails. As with other Greek destinations, Santorini has numerous windmills. Santorini tour packages can arrange for you to stay in a windmill for an out-of-the-world, Quixotic experience.

Santorini Trip: Best Time to Visit

While looking up Santorini tour packages, look for the best time to travel to the island. Deals on accommodation and sightseeing are important considerations while planning international holidays. Summers are the best time to enjoy this captivating little island on the Aegean Sea. The spring and the fall are convenient times too since the crowd is thin and deals are cheap.

Santorini Visa for Indians

Before you decide on Santorini travel packages from India, apply for a tourist visa to Greece. As an Indian tourist, you will need a Schengen visa. A Schengen visa is valid for up to 90 days from the date of issue. Itinerary, financial status and returns tickets are some mandatory documents for visa processing. Seek out the most convenient of the Santorini packages on offer to get the best deal.

Santorini Tourism: Best Places to Visit

Located right at the centre of the island, Pyrgos has a calm atmosphere. This quaint village still houses the ruins of the old fortress which adds to its appeal. Santorini tour packages unveil the charm of this village to couples looking for a peaceful time together. The merry cafes, the narrow labyrinth and the medieval vibe work together to make Pyrgos an alluring stop. It is an equally welcoming experience for families and groups.

Akrotiri is a run-down town showcasing the long-lost Minoan civilisation. The mud and brick town is more than a century old. Lose yourself in Vlichada and Red beach, two unusually attractive beaches here that contrast dramatically against the blue sea. This is why Santorini holiday packages always include Akrotiri.

Looking for a dramatic experience? This interesting place is nestled within the volcanic islands of Caldera. It houses the large volcanic crater, Daphne. Your activities during your Santorini tour package here may range from walking around the crater to diving into the volcanic hot waters.

The capital of Santorini, Fira is a dazzling, white-washed city. The town planning and the landscape lend it the charisma that is not seen in other cities. Santorini tour packages keep this city on their list of must-visits. Choose to walk in the hustle-bustle while soaking in the atmosphere of this Greek destination or walk into the museums.

Santorini Tourism: Local Dishes to Try

Domatokeftethes.

Tomato fritters of Santorini, this is a quintessential appetizer on the menu of all Santorini tour packages. The special volcanic soil of the island lends flavour to the tomatoes making this an exclusive dish found in no other country.

Stuffed Grape Leaves

This is a delectable Mediterranean appetizer. It is stuffed with Chloro cheese, rice and herbs and served with Tzatziki which is a healthy Mediterranean dip. Santorini tour packages offer the chance to taste this modern take on a traditional fare.

Santorini tour packages will introduce you to a distinctive island sweet with Ottoman origins. Here is a melt-in-mouth dessert of stuffed filo pastry. The filling is locally grown pistachios. It is so special that it features in Christmas dinners and weddings.

This is a typical Santorini dish made with yellow split-pea. It is smooth, creamy, tangy and zingy. Fava is both a main and a side dish. Travellers on Santorini tour packages mustn’t miss out on this yummy dish.

Melitzanosalata

Santorini tour packages will inform you that this is a Greek eggplant dip. The island grows white eggplants on its volcanic soil. These sweet-fleshed eggplants lend a superior flavour to the dip.

Things to Do on Your Santorini Trip

Enjoy sunset from oia.

Sunset from Oia should be a ‘must-do’ in Santorini tour packages. Sunsets leave a soothing effect on the soul and the delightfully pretty Oia is one of the best places to view this natural phenomenon. Revel in the most picturesque vista as you let the mellow sunset colours wash away your worries.

Take a Tour to Nea Kameni Volcanic Island

It is not every day that you get to walk around a smoking volcanic crater. Prebook the ‘volcanic island tour’ in your Santorini tour package and have the experience of a lifetime. Hike to the top while admiring the remarkable lava formations.

Visit Archaeological Excavation in Akrotiri

The site unravels the ancient Greek lives before the volcanic eruption of 1700 BC buried Akrotiri. Many Santorini tour packages arrange for bus trips to the excavation site as well as a guided tour through the by lanes of the ruined city.

Relax on the Beaches

Santorini has the famed black-sand beaches which are aesthetically striking in contrast to the turquoise blue of the sea. Most Santorini tour packages list the vivid Red beach for a swim. The White beach is great for hiking.

Souvenirs to Look out For

Keep the romance of Santorini alive in your heart with charming mementoes. Santorini tour packages often guide tourists to the ideal shopping options. Pick quirky local items such as beauty products using volcanic ash and donkey milk, to amaze your family and friends. Creative wooden art and various Santorini wines are great souvenirs to carry back home as well. Santorini packages unveil a lot more for the antique collector in you.
