On weekends from June-October, Sommelier Erica Archer leads themed educational cruises around the Bay, exploring wine regions, styles, and grape varietals. Each 2-hour Wine sail includes a box of snacks and wine tasting to enjoy while exploring Maine’s waterways. 

Portland Paddle

Looking to get a little closer to the water? Head to East End Beach for a sea kayak or paddle board tour. Take the 2-hour sunset kayak tour for sunset views over the city, to the 3-hour tour to Fort Gorges, which can only be accessed from the water by small vessels. Portland Paddle also offers tours via stand-up paddle board, including a unique once-a-month full moon tour . If you love the idea of seeing Maine from the water, they offer multi-day excursions to nearby islands 

Worried about seasickness? Stay dry and see the entire city – and its beautiful surroundings – on wheels. Whether by luxury bus or pedal power, Portland offers a variety of tours focused on all that this city has to offer: history, food and beverage, stunning vistas, and plenty of personality.

Brews Cruise

Maine is famous for its craft beer scene, so of course there is a tour based on beer. Take the Brews Cruise for a behind-the-scenes look at Maine’s craft breweries, distilleries, and wineries. Their all-inclusive model includes sample flights at each stop, snacks and water on the bus, and a designated driver to make sure you finish the day safe and sound. They offer options to visit just breweries or a mix of breweries and local distilleries, always with at least one stop behind the scenes at a production facility. If the bus isn’t your style, they also offer bike and walking tours.

Summer Feet Cycling

From May-October, Summer Feet Cycling offers a variety of both guided and self-guided bicycle tours. Their 2.5-hour Around the Peninsula Tour offers a sampling of Portland’s history and architecture, waterfront views, and a few hotspots to check out after the ride. If you’re more comfortable on the bike, try the daylong lighthouse tour for 5 lighthouse stops and a Maine lobster roll.

The Scenic Route Maine Tours

The Scenic Route focuses on a small group tour style , with passionate local guides excited to interact with each guest. Their City & Lighthouse Tour takes a 2-hour route through Portland’s highlights with a 30-minute stop at Portland Head Light to take in the craggy coastline. 

This 60-minute cross-category tour takes you by both land and sea through the city and Casco Bay. It is a great way to orient yourself to the town through history and hot spots, with signature duck tour humor.

Portland Fire Engine Co.

This 50-minute city tour on a vintage fire engine is fully narrated by local guides, and outfitted with a flat-screen TV to show historical images of the city’s hotspots . It is intentionally shorter than other trolley tours, designed to get you excited about Portland before setting you free to explore on your own.

Portland Explorer

Explore the coastline on a 2.5-hour tour of Portland’s scenic lighthouses, with stops to walk around Portland Head Light, Spring Point Ledge Light, and Portland Breakwater. Portland Explorer’s 12-seat Ford transit van includes a flatscreen TV for slideshows during the tour, Owner-guide Eric is a lobsterman during the offseason, so he has plenty of stories about Maine’s coastline to share.

All food samples are included in the cost of a ticket, and they offer accommodations for many dietary restrictions. 

Greater Portland Landmarks Walking Tours

These walking tours focus on three distinct neighborhoods of the city through three themes; the Western Promenade, Homes of Portland’s Golden Age, and India Street: immigration and innovation. Each 60-75 minute tour is led by a passionate volunteer guide with deep knowledge of the city’s history. This one isn’t for last-minute planners, though. They require booking a week in advance. Day 1: The Maine bike tour begins in vibrant Portland, known for its maritime history and urban charm. You’ll pedal along scenic coastal roads and trails, taking in iconic landmarks like Bug Lighthouse and the historic Portland Head Lighthouse, one of the oldest in Maine. Get a taste of the coast with a famous Maine lobster roll while we explore south from Portland to Old Orchard beach along roads and the Rails-to-Trails Hall of Fame Eastern Trail. 

Day 2:  This day brings you to Winter Harbor and Acadia National Park. The 13-mile ride offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, and a ferry ride reveals stunning vistas of Cadillac Mountain. Exploring the quaint streets of Bar Harbor is a charming experience.

Day 3:   You’ll delve into the natural wonders of Acadia National Park, navigating the historic Carriage Roads throughout the park. These crushed stone trails offer cycling at your own pace, with opportunities for up to 36 miles of exploration. The day is highlighted by majestic views of Acadia’s rugged terrain and the timeless beauty of the carriage roads.  

Day 4: A scenic ride takes you through Bar Harbor’s Loop Roads, offering 35 miles of coastal beauty. A visit to Bass Harbor for lunch and a shuttle ride to Camden introduce you to two distinct coastal experiences. The day culminates with a magical schooner ride aboard the Schooner Olad at sunset.

Day 5:  Departing from Camden, you can start your day with a rewarding ascent up Mt. Battie for panoramic views if you choose. The 35-mile ride along paved roads leads you to the iconic Pemaquid Lighthouse. The journey includes the charming town of New Harbor, a working harbor, and endds with the striking beauty of the Pemaquid Lighthouse against the rocky coastline.

Day 6: Witness a mesmerizing sunrise at the Pemaquid Lighthouse and enjoy breakfast at the Bradley Inn. A leisurely 25-mile ride from Brunswick to Freeport offers scenic views, with Freeport’s attractions such as LL Bean and Wilbur Chocolates awaiting exploration. Finally, a shuttle ride returns you to Portland, where you’ll reflect on the unforgettable coastal cycling adventure.

There’s Nothing Like Hitting the Bike Trails in Maine

Someone really had the brain gears working when they named BikeMaine. It’s the name of Maine’s biggest biking event and a powerful call to action. So answer the call to this seven-day, 350-mile group ride that encompasses everything that makes Maine a one-of-a-kind cycling destination. It’s a two-wheeling celebration of Maine’s people, places, culture and food.

Trek Across Maine - Brunswick

This multi-day, multi-route and multi-awesome event has been around for over 35 years. With start and finish lines at the beautiful Brunswick Landing, 2,000 cyclists and 750 volunteers put hearts and hands together in the largest fundraising event of its kind in the nation for the American Lung Association.

Maine Lighthouse Ride – South Portland

Biking in Portland, Maine, is great in any direction. This event benefits the Eastern Trail Alliance and its goal of building a 65-mile greenway from Kittery to South Portland . The greenway will be part of the East Coast Greenway, a more-than-3,000-mile trail from Maine to Key West, Florida. It’s a multi-route event with phenomenal views of the coastline and nine historic lighthouses.

Dempsey Challenge – Lewiston

The Dempsey Challenge in Lewiston is an annual run, walk and cycle experience, and it’s the primary fundraiser for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing. Cycling routes range from 10 to 100 miles through countryside and coastline, with a free family “Festival in the Park” featuring food, children’s activities and live music.

The Ultimate Lighthouse Bike tour in Portland Maine

Explore parks, lighthouses and peaks island on this ultimate bike tour of portland, maine.

This bike tour starts at 845 AM at Portland head lighthouse, where guests are sized up for equipment. After guests are comfortable on the bikes, we explore the park a bit before heading to our other two stops on the south Portland side; Spring Point ledge and Portland Breakwater (bug light). Before the group is picked up on the water taxi at Bug Light park, we will explore the park’s Liberty ship memorial and monument. The water taxi will come get us on the south Portland side, and the group will get great views in the harbor as the boats speed us out to peaks island for the rim loop on peaks. Once on peaks, we will enjoy a cocktail or beer on the backside of the island before we explore Battery Steele (peaks island’s heavy artillery fortification from the Second World War) After we exit the Battery, the group will head back into the sun for the remainder of the island loop, and if we have time, we will enjoy a pizza or a lobster roll from one of the vendors on peaks before exiting the island via CBL ferry. Tour ends on the Portland side
