Live reviews
If you’re of a certain age - one young enough that you win’t quite remember his pop heyday - you might be forgiven for immediately associating Shakin’ Stevens with Christmas, but there is of course more to him than ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’, and indeed more to him than providing dubious quotes for the back of Alan Partridge’s autobiography. The man born Michael Baratt has had no fewer than thirty-thtee top forty singles in his native Britain, and holds the impressive accolade of being the most successful artist, in chart terms, in the UK through the eighties, based on singles sales.
He’s turned out nineteen studio albums to date, with the most recent, Now Listen, dropping in 2007; at the time, it was his first such release for sixteen years. He’s not been too active in the studio, then, but he has continued to tour, completing a run of intimate venues across the UK in late 2011, with a full band and setlists that ticked off all the classics. In 2012, he played across Europe too, proving that his fanbase remains alive and well across the continent; his place on the nostalgia circuit is certainly assured, but whether he has anything more to offer the charts is another question entirely.

I saw old time rock and roller Shaky as support act for The Status Quo in Bournemouth at the beginning of the month. Considering that he had a large heart attack not too long ago, he has been doing really well health-wise and managed to perform just fine. He performed a very even mix of hits and new tracks (alternating a lot and sadly no 'Julie', which is my favourite of his), His voice has aged alright and his performance was pretty good.
Would see again if he did a solo tour
Brilliant!Shaky is still taking care of business!1h45 same good music!Shaky is the same entertainer.I was in 2008 in Bucharest concert and to see him now it was amazing.Planning to follow him at other concerts!Crowd was insane, everybody was dancing, doesn’t matter they were 20or 70 years old!All the best for Shaky!!!
we really enjoyed the show shaky is one of the best entertainers ever the show and shaky were both amazing looking forward to the next one and hopefully a new album

The best, worst and weirdest of Stagecoach Day 1 with Eric Church, Jelly Roll and more
- Show more sharing options
- Copy Link URL Copied!
After Coachella’s back-to-back weekends , barely any grass remains on the grounds of the Empire Polo Club. But that hasn’t stopped tens of thousands of country fans from venturing here for Stagecoach, which got underway Friday afternoon and runs though Sunday night with headliners Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Morgan Wallen. The Times’ Mikael Wood and Vanessa Franko are at the festival, notebooks in hand and bandanas in place. Here’s a rundown of the highlights and lowlights of Day 1.
Eric Church lives up to his name
Church used his fifth headlining appearance at Stagecoach as an opportunity to try something different: Instead of leading his sturdy road band through a set of the hits that have made him a kind of older-brother figure to the likes of Wallen and Luke Combs , Church turned the so-called Mane Stage into an open-air chapel (complete with stained glass) for a stripped-down acoustic performance in which he was backed by a 16-member gospel choir.
The set mixed originals like “Mistress Named Music” and “Like Jesus Does” with far-flung covers: “Amazing Grace,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “Take Me to the River” and “Gin and Juice.” His aim seemed to be to showcase the music that formed him as a kid growing up in small-town North Carolina — and to draw attention, in this year of Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter,” to the Black roots of country music. (The performance also shared some DNA with the solo-acoustic residency Church has going at Chief’s, his new bar in Nashville, where Wallen was arrested this month for throwing a chair off the roof .)
Energy-wise, it was a risky choice at the end of a day many spent drinking in the sun: Half an hour or so after Church opened with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” — probably not a song anyone still needs to keep doing, if we’re being honest — one guy near me yelled, “This is Friday night, not Sunday morning!” As they went along, though, Church and his accompanists picked up a righteous steam. — Mikael Wood
Stagecoach 2024: How to stream Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert and other sets at home
Stagecoach 2024 — who needs tickets and dust? The country festival will stream live on Prime Video and Twitch.tv, kicking off at 4 p.m. daily through Sunday.

Dwight Yoakam and the fabulous flying fringe
If you’re going to wear a Canadian tuxedo, make it memorable.
While top-and-bottom denim is a perennial look for Yoakam , on Friday the troubadour paired it with his standard cowboy hat and boots, but the standout was the jacket covered in white fringe on the front and back.
Yoakam, whose name was misspelled on the official Stagecoach set-times sign outside of the Palomino stage (as was Nickelback’s), started about 10 minutes after his scheduled start of 7:20 p.m.
Back to the fringe, it was almost hypnotic to watch it bounce and sway as Yoakam shimmied and shuffled across the stage while he and his band (also snazzily dressed with sparkles, no fringe) played songs including “Little Sister,” “Streets of Bakersfield” and a cover of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”
Since Yoakam didn’t allow press to photograph his set, the best you can get from us is a stick - figure drawing I made — unfortunately art is not my strong suit and I really couldn’t do the fringe justice.
Other than a couple of feedback screeches on the microphone, Yoakam and his band played a tight set. The crowd began filtering out to hike over to the Mane Stage to catch Jelly Roll, which was a shame because Yoakam just kept getting better with “Honky Tonk Man” and “Guitars, Cadillacs” in the back half of the performance. — Vanessa Franko
Best multi tasker: Jelly Roll
Nobody made more of their time at Stagecoach than Jelly Roll , who, before his set on the Mane Stage, turned up for a cooking demo with Guy Fieri and afterward schlepped over to the Palomino to join Nickelback for “Rockstar.”
His primary performance was a condensed version of the road show he’s been touring hard over the past couple of years, with bruised yet muscular country hits like “Son of a Sinner” and “Save Me” alongside a medley of the hip-hop classics (including Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend”) that inspired him to become a rapper before he turned to singing.
He brought out Maddie & Tae to do a new song, “Liar,” that he said he’d put on his next album if the crowd liked it (and wouldn’t if the crowd didn’t); he also brought out T-Pain, who did “All I Do Is Win” and helped Jelly Roll pay tribute to the late Toby Keith with a take on Keith’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”
After “Need a Favor,” Jelly Roll ushered his wife and daughter to the stage — he’d taken his daughter out of school for the day and flown her to California, he happily pointed out — and thanked the audience for changing the trajectory of their lives. Then he did a spiel about proving naysayers wrong that climaxed with his enumerating how many People’s Choice Awards he’s won. Iconic, obviously. — M.W.
How Jelly Roll overcame addiction and prison to become the new (tattooed) face of country
Jelly Roll is not your typical country star: His past includes prison, addiction and 20-plus records as a rapper. Now, he’s a favorite for multiple Grammy noms.
Oct. 10, 2023
Worst surprise guest: The wind
Jelly Roll brought out T-Pain . Mother Nature brought out winds that were so bad that if you drove in to the festival along the 10 Freeway it was difficult to see the mountains because of the dust.
While the worst of the wind was west of the festival site (some gusts reached up to 60 and 70 mph in the Coachella Valley , according to the National Weather Service), the South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust advisory through late Friday. And if you were on the grounds, you could feel all of that windblown dust sticking to you.
It did lead to some interesting people-watching, though, as many a cowboy hat was chased across the field. — V.F.
The differences — and similarities — between the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals
The Stagecoach Country Music Festival is held in Indio at the same site as Coachella. What do the festivals have in common?
A return visit from a Coachella headliner
A week after she headlined Coachella — and with an album on the way called “Lasso” to hype — Lana Del Rey turned up at Stagecoach to trill the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” with Paul Cauthen, a hammy up-and-comer with a booming baritone and a televangelist’s fashion sense. No idea what kind of relationship these two might share in real life, but together onstage they brought a touch of slightly creepy glamour to the desert. — M.W.
Inside the secret spots that make you feel like you’re not at a country festival
Heading into the weekend, George Michael , INXS and the Human League were among the artists I would’ve least expected to hear at Stagecoach.
But if you make your way to the password-protected Sonny’s — the ’80s-tastic speakeasy from Attaboy with a light-up dance floor and tropical print wallpaper that could have been ripped from the bedroom of one of the Golden Girls — it’s less honkytonk and more new wave.
Surrounding Sonny’s is the outdoor tiki-inspired speakeasy Tropicale from PDT, but you still get the same ‘80s tunes pumping from inside Sonny’s. You can find the secret bars near the Golden Road patio heading to Diplo’s Honkytonk .
The third speakeasy, the Basement, is also back for Stagecoach. It still has black-light posters of Cheech & Chong and neon artwork of an alien with dorm-room vibes, but it’s where you’ll hear alt-rock and mainstream hip-hop from the ’90s. When I stopped by I was greeted with a Sublime sing-along from fellow patrons followed by some Cypress Hill and Eminem. You can access it via chef Aaron May’s Porky’s barbecue pop-up near the rainbow Spectra tower. — V.F.
One to watch
Is it too early to anoint the next Zach Bryan? Wyatt Flores, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Bryan’s home state of Oklahoma, seemed to be gunning for the job in an impressive set on the Palomino Stage that got the place shouting along at top volume, as folks do with Bryan at his famously rowdy gigs. With a scraped-up voice and a pained-looking expression on his face, Flores sang ragged yet cathartic emo-country songs about bottoming out emotionally; he also added the Fray to the list of 1990s/2000s rock acts shaping the sound of modern Nashville with a punked-up rendition of that band’s “How to Save a Life.” — M.W.
A difference of opinion
Her dad, comedian Rob Schneider, has lately reoriented his career around railing against what he calls “woke bull—.” But Elle King introduced her cover of Tyler Childers’ “Jersey Giant” with as woke a set of instructions as I heard all day: “Grab someone you know. If not, ask permission.” — M.W.
Best country singer dressed for her performance as a European milkmaid: Hailey Whitters
Real Swiss Miss energy. — M.W.
Most stylish cowboy hat worn by an artist who also played Coachella: Carin León
The rootsy yet polished Mexican singer and songwriter was the first Spanish-language act to play a full set at Stagecoach, a sign of both his popularity and that of the regional Mexican music that also took him (and Mexico’s Peso Pluma) to Coachella this month. — M.W.
Right where they belong
“Very strange to be playing a country festival,” Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger said not long into the band’s late-night set, but it wasn’t really: Nashville has been absorbing Nickelback’s caveman-rock lessons for years, as Kroeger reminded us when he brought out Hardy (who shares Nickelback’s longtime producer, Joey Moi) to yowl his happily knuckle-dragging “Sold Out.” — M.W.

Former Celtics Sharpshooter Lands New Deal with Pelicans
- Author: Bobby Krivitsky
In this story:
The New Orleans Pelicans are fighting to save their season. They trail the Oklahoma City Thunder 2-0 as their first-round series moves to the Big Easy.
But the front office must maintain a semblance of balance between focusing on the present and looking beyond this series.
Addressing an item on their offseason agenda before the summer arrives, the Pelicans have reached a new deal with Matt Ryan, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.com.
Their new pact is a three-year, $6.1 million contract, guaranteeing his $1.5 million deal this season, is non-guaranteed for the 2024-25 campaign, and includes a team option for 2025-26.
While the former Boston Celtics sharpshooter is yet to suit up for New Orleans in the playoffs this year, in 28 regular season appearances, including one start, he averaged 5.4 points and drilled 45.1% of his 3.3 attempts from beyond the arc.
For his career, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish alum is producing 4.4 points per contest and has a 45.1% conversion rate from three-point range.

‘illinoise’ theater review: justin peck transforms sufjan stevens’ concept album into a soaring rush of late adolescent experience.
Co-written with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury, the dance musical is a transcendent distillation of youth in all its pain and glory.

Gayle nachlis, former wma agent and women in film exec, dies at 72, 'mary jane' theater review: rachel mcadams makes a moving broadway debut in amy herzog's portrait of motherhood under duress.
We haven’t seen dance used as a primary narrative delivery system with this much power or expressiveness on Broadway since Twyla Tharp’s landmark Billy Joel musical, Movin’ Out , closed in 2005.
Illinoise comes to Broadway for a limited 16-week engagement from its sold-out run at the Park Avenue Armory, and prior to that, at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Bard SummerScape. The production has all the signs of a work fine-tuned along the way to heighten its at times almost overwhelming emotional impact and mold its series of vignettes into a cohesive narrative.
We feel the ascendant joys and precipitous sorrows of the characters directly through the 12 dancers’ moving bodies in loose-limbed choreography by Peck that can be tortured and convulsive or ecstatic but always organic. Moments early on in which the dancers bounce off each other’s bodies give the illusion of one human extending into another, breaking apart and then reforming with what seems like natural spontaneity. The bursts of movement in unison are all the more dynamic because Peck uses them sparingly.
Stevens’ swooning melodies, both lush and ethereal, and lyrics that are whimsical one moment and piercing the next, only occasionally are interpreted literally. More often, the songs serve as abstract reflections of the stories being shared by the dancers. I would never have believed anything could come close to seeing Stevens perform live with his dazzling orchestral assemblies. But the music here not only sounds glorious, it takes on profound new meaning through the visuals.
Scenic designer Adam Rigg has created a split-level playing space backed by a billboard that intermittently cues the song titles. Three stupendously talented vocalist-musicians, Shara Nova (who sang on the original Illinois album), Tasha Viets-VanLear and Elijah Lyons, perform on platforms above the stage; they wear butterfly wings, an emergence motif that appears throughout the show.
Behind them, 11 more musicians play on an upper deck, led by music director Nathan Coci, with elements like a banjo, vibraphone, flute and French horn honoring the multi-instrumental richness of Stevens’ ornate chamber pop. The orchestrations and arrangements by Timo Andres, who has collaborated with Stevens on two albums, are ravishing.
He gets welcomed into a campfire circle of young hikers toasting smores and clutching notebooks, from which they take turns telling stories. Henry is haunted by visions of three key figures in his life: his boyhood crush Carl (Ben Cook), Carl’s first love Shelby (Gaby Diaz) and Douglas. It’s clear Henry has a story to tell, but when invited to do so by the group, he declines.
Instead, other members step forward, including Morgan (Rachel Lockhart), who tangles with conflicted thoughts on her ancestors in “Jacksonville;” Jo Daviess (Jeanette Delgado), forever trying to outrun the dead white men that still have such a hold on America in “They Are Night Zombies;” and Wayne (Alejandro Vargas), who dons a clown suit, entering the homicidal world of “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” and finding his own secrets no less damning. (If Nova’s angelic falsetto on the line, “Oh my God, are you one of them?” doesn’t send shivers down your spine, check your hearing.)
Finally, Clark (Brandt Martinez) steps in to dispel the raw feelings stirred up by these tales with a celebration of his childhood idol Superman in “The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts,” a gingham picnic tablecloth fluttering in the wind as his cape. The notion of a hero capable of saving us all is revealed to be hollow, but the characters find comfort in community.
While anyone who’s ever wiped away tears listening to “Casimir Pulaski Day” will anticipate the coming tragedy, the show’s most plangent sequence is set to “The Seer’s Tower,” a chillingly staged parade of death that’s absolutely gutting. But the dancing, like the music, is art that destroys then rebuilds you, and the show ends on a note that’s refreshingly old-fashioned, a salute to the healing powers of love and community that seems almost like a throwback to an era before cynicism.
It’s hard to single out individual dancers in such a stellar company, but Ubeda is wonderful, channeling Henry’s innocence as much as the happiness or devastation that envelops him at different points.
His pas de deux with Simmons has the men winding their limbs and torsos around one another with a liquid grace that’s beautiful to behold, conveying with scorching sensuality the mutual intoxication of two people who can’t keep their hands off each other. The other high point for me was the mesmerizing Lockhart’s “Jacksonville” interlude, her dizzyingly sinuous vitality expertly blended with the contrasting rat-a-tat footwork of tap virtuoso Byron Tittle.
Along with the set and costumes (by Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung), the key craft element is Garth MacAleavey’s sound design, which makes every lyric clear as a bell, every note of music crystalline.
And Brandon Stirling Baker’s lighting is magical, bathing the dancers in pools of mournful darkness or liberating light. In the uplifting final song, “The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders,” rays of light flood through the branches of pine trees suspended upside-down way up in the flies, creating a cathedral effect. Which feels appropriate given that for the Sufjan Stevens faithful — and maybe even for many casual fans or those unfamiliar with his music — Illinoise will be a religious experience.
