Paramount Plus has finally launched in the UK and Ireland. From 22 June, Sky Q customers with a Sky Cinema subscription will receive the new channel as a free upgrade – so it’s worth checking your telly now.

Viewers without a Sky Cinema subscription can sign up for a free seven day trial and start watching shows on the new platform straight away. The streaming service costs £6.99 per month and joins the ranks of a growing crowd of services competing for our limited attention spans and entertainment budgets.

Originally launched in the US in 2021, Paramount Plus is home to an enormous library of new and classic movies from the legendary studios of Paramount Pictures, as well as catalogues of popular TV shows from channels like Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon.

Since its American debut, the fast-growing platform has seen its modest subscriber count soar to almost 40 million in the US. Meanwhile its main rival Netflix (which still commands more than 200 million customers around the world) reported its first subscriber decline in more than a decade.

The launch of Paramount Plus in the UK coincides with the release of several big-ticket shows, some of which are exclusive to the platform. These include Star Trek : Picard , Star Trek: Discovery and the live-action videogame tie-in Halo . The availability of classic MTV and Comedy Central shows like Beavis and Butthead and South Park should also help corner the lucrative guy-in-their-mid-to-late-30s demographic.

To help bring Paramount Plus to the UK, owner ViacomCBS is partnering with Sky Group in the UK, which means freebies for some Sky members. Sky Q customers will be able to add the new streaming service to their existing plan, and Sky Cinema customers will get Paramount Plus included for free.

If you’re not a Sky customer, there’s still ways to get a better deal on Paramount Plus. You can pay for an annual Paramount Plus subscription to get an effective discount of £13.98 per year.

Paramount Plus: £6.99 per month, Paramountplus.com

Release date and price.

Paramount Plus launched in the UK and Ireland on 22 June, with more European countries to follow later on this year. The streaming service is available to watch via the web browser, or as a standalone app on smart TVs and plug-in streaming devices .

Paramount Plus costs £6.99 per month or £69.90 per year. Sky Cinema subscribers will have Paramount Plus included in their plan for free.

In the US, viewers can pay half-price ($4.99 per month) to watch a version of Paramount Plus with ad breaks. There’s no word yet on whether a similarly priced, ad-supported version of the streaming service will launch in the UK.

Will there be a free trial?

Yes. New subscribers in the UK can try out Paramount Plus with a free seven-day trial when they first sign up to the service .

You can cancel at any time during your trial. Otherwise, your subscription will kick in at £6.99 per month once the trial period ends.

How to watch

Like most other streaming services, you can watch Paramount Plus in your web browser by heading to Paramountplus.com .

Read more: These are officially the best streaming services in 2022

Paramount Plus is available as a downloadable app on most devices, phones, tablets and smart TVs. This includes devices from Apple, Roku, Google and Samsung, as well as the Fire TV stick range from Amazon.

Following a deal between ViacomCBS and Sky to bring the service to the UK, Paramount Plus is also available as a Sky Q app and is free for Sky Cinema subscribers.

What channels are included in Paramount Plus?

Paramount Plus includes more than 30,000 episodes and movies from channels including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures.

Paramount Plus shows

Paramount is home to some giant franchises, which we expect will start being yanked from rival streaming services very soon, as well as original programming and popular kids’ shows.

Read more: Amazon fire 7 kids edition is fun for the little ones and a pal to parents

Animated comedy South Park and all of the new and upcoming Star Trek shows have already been confirmed for the streaming service. This includes sci-fi hits like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Paramount is also home to Jackass , which recently announced a return to television following the runaway success of its 2022 movie spin-off, Jackass Forever .

But if you’re looking for more intellectual programming, the service will also offer the entire back catalogues of Paw Patrol and SpongeBob SquarePants .

Is Paramount Plus free with Prime?

Sadly, no. While US viewers were able to add the Paramount Plus channel to their Prime Video app , a Paramount Plus subscription is required to watch content.

Is Paramount Plus be free with Sky?

In the UK, a partnership between ViacomCBS and Sky makes Paramount Plus free for Sky Cinema subscribers. This tie-up makes it unlikely we’ll see a similar discount for Prime Video members.

Sign up for Sky TV here.

When is Paramount Plus coming to Sky?

Paramount Plus launched as a new Sky Q app on 22 June. If you already subscribe to the Sky Cinema package, you should see the Paramount Plus app appear automatically.

If not, you’ll just need to add Paramount Plus to your Sky package before you can see and access it. Your Paramount Plus subscription should then appear as part of your monthly Sky bill, just as add-ons like Netflix and Disney Plus do.

Star Trek: Prodigy, Paramount+ Will Be Available to Sky Customers in Europe in 2022

sky cinema star trek

Thanks to a new deal between ViacomCBS and Comcast’s Sky streaming platform, Star Trek: Prodigy and the Paramount+ streaming service are coming to much of Europe in 2022.

The United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria will get to watch Paramount+ content, which includes all Star Trek television shows (but, as of this publication, only the Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness movies), as part of the Sky streaming platform.

No exact date was given for the Paramount+ content to land on Sky in 2022.

Star Trek: Prodigy bridge crew

“We are thrilled to expand our long-standing partnership with Sky to continue delivering ViacomCBS’ leading portfolio of premium entertainment brands to Sky customers and importantly bring Paramount+ to new audiences in all Sky markets,” said Raffaele Annecchino, President and Chief Executive Officer, ViacomCBS Networks International via a press release . “This transformative distribution deal is key to accelerating our global ambitions in streaming while also supporting Sky’s strategic objectives to better serve audiences with greater flexibility in how they consume our content across all platforms.”

Titles that will become available through 2022 in the UK, Ireland, Italy and GSA include a collection of scripted, exclusive Paramount+ Originals and exciting new takes on iconic franchises, including  HALO ,  The Offer  and the new  iCarly  series. As the international home of SHOWTIME, the service will offer  The Man Who Fell to Earth, Ripley, Super Pumped,  and  American Gigolo,  in addition to popular titles from ViacomCBS, such as  Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Star Trek: Prodigy,  and MTV Unplugged.  The service will also feature a collection of new movie premieres and fan favorites from Paramount Pictures such as films from the  Mission Impossible  and  Transformer  franchises.

Whenever Paramount+ does launch on Sky in 2022, Sky Cinema subscribers will get it for free. All other Sky customers can subscribe to Paramount+ as an add-on to their account.

Paramount+ is steadily growing its audience; by the end of this year, it will be available in 25 markets, expanding to 45 markets by the end of 2022. That’s good news for Star Trek fans, as more people will be able to catch the slate of recent and upcoming Star Trek shows – a slate that is only expected to grow thanks to a recent contract extension between Star Trek showrunner Alex Kurtzman and CBS.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Coming To UK/Europe With Launch Of Paramount+ And New Deal With Sky

sky cinema star trek

| August 5, 2021 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 30 comments so far

Star Trek: Prodigy is coming to Paramount+ in the USA this fall, but we are now learning more about how fans will be able to watch the new kids’ animated series around the world.

Paramount+ and Prodigy coming to Europe, with help from Sky

Today ViacomCBS announced a new partnership with Sky (part of Comcast) that will bring the Paramount+ streaming service to Sky platforms in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in 2022. Paramount+ will become available as part of the Sky Q service and be included with Sky Cinema packages at no additional cost. Other Sky customers will be able to subscribe to Paramount+ as an add-on option.

Paramount+ will also be available direct-to-consumer in UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria through the Paramount+ app for iOS and Android and across supported smart TVs and streaming devices.

Among the exclusive Paramount+ originals announced to be part of this European expansion is Star Trek: Prodigy . The new kids’ animated series will debut on Paramount+ in the USA and in Canada on CTV Sci-Fi this fall.

Set in the Delta Quadrant a few years after Star Trek: Voyager , the series aimed at younger viewers follows a group of alien teens who discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel, and set off on a series of adventures. The show includes the return of Kate Mulgrew playing the Emergency Training Hologram in the form of Captain Janeway, who will guide the young aliens in the ways of Starfleet.

The Prodigy characters

There are no details yet for the availability of Prodigy in other markets, but ViacomCBS continues to expand internationally, including currently being available in Latin America, the Nordic countries, and in August will launch in Australia and New Zealand, with a goal to reaching 45 markets by 2022.

Other Star Trek series currently available in the Sky Europe markets on Netflix ( Discovery ), and Amazon Prime Video ( Lower Decks ) should remain with their current streaming partners. There is no news yet on the availability in Europe for the upcoming live-action series Strange New Worlds , which launches in 2022 on Paramount+ in the USA and Latin America, and on CTV Sci-Fi in Canada.

Amazingly, Lower Decks arrives more than 1 year late from its release and one month late for its 2nd season in Latin America by Paramount+, SNW already confirmed in Latin America by P+. Now Prodigy will arrive in Europe, but without a confirmed launch in Latin America. Even worse is having to subscribe to Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Telecine in order to have all the Star Trek content

Let’s not forget the movies are licensed away from Paramount+…

I suspect that some business school professor is going to write up Star Trek IP rights and licensing as a case study of self destructive behaviour in firms resisting a merger.

Star Trek is ViacomCBS’ top franchise IP and rationally should have been managed like that even when CBS owned the IP and Paramount just had licences for movie making.

This kind of narrow focused decision making on licensing really has the feel of sel-interested executives’ poisoning the potential merger.

And now we all will suffer for it for 5 years or whatever the life of the licences.

That is crazy. I remember the old days waaaaaaaaay back in 2017 when Americans thought they were being jipped with being forced to sign up to All Access to watch Discovery while others got it on Netflix, the site everyone liked. Boy it looks like such a great call now even if the service itself is still not amazing. But at least we don’t have to sign up to 3-4 different sites to catch them all.

Wouldn’t you just sub to one or two and no more? How would you have time and money to just sub to all these services anyway? I just swap and go depending on what Im interested in watching at any given point in the year. Prodigy will drop and be on the whatever service its on for at least a good few months.

I think that’s the idea of the streaming model, it’s super easy to swap around and get different flavours and content depending on what’s of most interest at the moment. IMO.

I’m looking forward to Prodigy and excited to see Lower Decks next week!

Kind of a good news-bad news scenario for me. I do already pay for Sky Q but the streaming quality is hopeless on my Sky Q box so I have to fully download everything before I can start watching.

So, I will have to pay for around two months of Sky for getting this show in order to watch it here in Germany. Well, I think its time to see what else they got that is worth watching in this timeframe. Also, I have no idea how Sky works and what to book.

Also, some release dates would be nice.

the deal was just announced this morning. That’s all the detail available for now but we will have more coverage as the launch gets closer in 2022. But according to the press release it will be available on its own and I believe that means you won’t have to have Sky.

Ok, I thought Prodigy is expected to release this year in fall, not in 2022. And if I can watch it on its own (where exactly) then I don’t get the deal with sky. I thought Sky would ship Paramount+ here in Europe, and thus, ship Prodigy.

Prodigy is due to release in North America this fall. Looks like Europe will have to wait a few months. That’s less than ideal in this day and age, but I remember the late ’80s, when I had to wait years for the latest season of Doctor Who to show up on my PBS station.

Prodigy will come out this year but only in the US and Canada, with this P+ agreement for Europe kind of confirms that PRO should only arrive in 2022 in these countries.

As far as I know, Sky Q is only available two ways: either a regular Sky TV decoder or through an extra device that you have to attach to your internet router. This means – but I’m not sure at all – that Sky Q cannot be simply streamed online like Netflix or Prime.

Hopefully P+ will be available the “old-fashioned” way, a simple online subscription. If ALL the series arrive on P+ in Germany that way, it would make things less dire…I will keep my Prime subscription for free shipping and LOTR and probably cancel Netflix when Stranger Things is done…

Oh no, that’s bad, very bad. I was hoping for either Amazon or Netflix which I already pay for. As I’m not going to cancel either of them (I need Prime for free shipping and the upcoming LOTR series and Netflix for Stranger Things and The Witcher), I would have to pay for THREE different services only for Star Trek. With Star Wars on Disney+ that makes four :-(

I’m really looking forward to PROD but until further notice, I guess I will have to wait for the Blu-Ray this time. But if SNW is on Sky as well… I definitely won’t wait one second for that…

Unless Netflix or Amazon will accept deals for non-exclusive licences, no new Trek will come to them.

Generally, ViacomCBS’ new corporate policy of not selling any exclusive licences to non ViacomCBS platforms is a good thing. In a few years when existing licences expire, all Trek will be available on Paramount+.

However, it means the day of having one or two streaming services is gone. All the major content producing conglomerates are pulling back their IP to their own platforms – Disney, WB, NBC/Universal etc.

Netflix is making vast amounts of content for itself because it knows that its era of having exclusive licences to others’ libraries of shows and movies is done. Amazon has just bought a major library and content producer MGM for over $8 billion.

The tyranny of these unending and ever increasing fees!

I think I might chunk the interwebs and this smart phone that attracts fee-based services and apps like a magnet… and just read a book.

It will be interesting to see how long DISCO will remain on Netflix with new seasons and PIC / LDS on Prime… LDS S2 will be on Amazon this summer but then?

Anyway, Prime is here to stay for free shipping and LOTR (and the last seaso of The Expanse)… Netflix I keep mainly for Stranger Things but I can live without The Witcher.

I am looking forward to Prodigy as much as I am ST: SNW!!!! This looks good, hopefully they don’t “into Darkness” these!

Who the heck can afford multiple screening platforms? Not me, alas.

Sorry but that is really a half assed aproach to expanding your streaming service. I would have payd to get Paramount + as a self contained service, but to have to deal with sky where I don’t have the slightest interest in.

In the press release it says the service will be available on its own too!

not good news. too many different streaming services. I’m already a Netflix Amazon and Disney + subscriber … I think it’s the worst way to retain new fans in countries where fans are already so few.

i don’t think i will do another subscription. in Italy to have P + with Sky cinema you have to pay 39 euros per month …

A shame this day has finally arrived, because that means SNW will end up there too. As a huge Trek fan in the UK, I simply won’t sign up for P+, I’ll wait for the physical media release. Multiple streaming platforms per-studio will just not be a thing in this house, we can’t justify the cost. The exception to this is Disney+, which does have an absolutely enormous catalog, and is a genuine rival to Netflix and Amazon.

Paramount is not a big enough name to take off independently in the UK. The tie-in with Sky is a smart move, because they probably know this- but even being on that platform they’ll be up against Sky’s own channels and their tie-in with HBO via Sky Atlantic, which is very popular.

The more streaming becomes the mainstream and the more I see the direction it’s going, the more I’m convinced that physical media is still the way to go for the content you really love.

Paramount + will fail miserably here in Australia. Virtually no one will subscribe.

If there is a free period then most will just wait until the episodes are all up and then binge watch quickly.

Wow the international streaming rights are becoming a mess aren’t they? So many different sites you have to use just to watch the new shows. It sounds like most people in Europe, South America , Australia and possibly Asia will probably need at least 3 sites: Netflix, Amazon and Paramount+.

For the hardcore fans, they will probably get all of them if they can but also a lot of places people can’t afford to get all these sites at once either. Sad that Trek can’t be more centralized everywhere like Star Wars is on Disney+.

It’s not just that people in Europe will have to get yet another service. It also seems like they will have to wait longer for Prodigy because it will only come to Sky/P+ in Europe some time in 2022. So it’s the Lower Decks international delay all over again…

Great news! Amazon prime AND netflix AND P+ in Germany. I always wanted to pay for much plattforms as possible just to watch Star Trek.

2022?!? Really? Again the international fans are left behind and I am (and for sure many others) are really pissed of! What kind of strategy is that? Do they want to motivate the fans to look for illegal viewing options because it is not possible to what it legally for MONTHS? I can live with getting a third streaming service and happyliy pay for it to watch a new trek series but I want to watch it directly with the US release.

I can certainly relate to the feeling. However, this delay only really affects hard-core international fans who want to discuss the episodes with their North American friends as they are released for the very first time. Most casual fans or more general audiences (remember, Prodigy is supposed to open Trek to new audiences) probably don’t care whether the show is released this fall or next spring. I’d go even further and suggest that outside of people who visit websites like Trekmovie most people aren’t even aware that Prodigy is coming (or when it’s coming). So yeah, this could drive some international fans to seek out illegal ways to watch the show as it is released in North America. But again: this show is targeted at families. How many families in non-English-speaking markets will pirate an English-only version of the show to watch with their kids?

Likely, the problem is that Paramount Plus can’t get their service up and running in Europe by the time Prodigy premieres. So they could either delay Prodigy also in their home market (not a good idea since this is still where most of their subscribers are) or license Prodigy to another streaming service outside of North America (not a good idea either because they want people to subscribe to P+). Also, if ViacomCBS won’t grant them exclusive distribution rights that makes the show less interesting for Netflix, Amazon and Co.

So, from a UK perspective that means I would need 3 subscriptions to cover all Trek series: Lower Decks on Amazon, Prodigy via Sky and Netflix for the rest.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

sky cinema star trek

The destination for fans of science fiction and fantasy genres, Syfy, will be re-branding to Sky Sci-Fi from Tuesday 26 July. The channel has been revamped and will offer exciting new shows while still being home to a host of sci-fi classics that fans know and love.

Hitting UK screens for the very first time on launch week is the long-awaited release of SurrealEstate, a paranormal and spooktacular series, featuring cast members Tim Rozon and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek). Also announced as brand new to the channel and airing in launch month, is the exhilarating zombie series Day of The Dead, inspired by George. A Romero’s horror movie, starring Keenan Tracey and Natalie Malaika.

Fiction fans will still be able to find their favourite shows on the channel, with Star Trek, Stargate and Quantum Leap named as just a few of the many titles available for avid sci-fi watchers. What’s more, box-set bingers will be able to feast their eyes on new classic series soon to be revealed, with endless episodes to enjoy.

Zai Bennett, Managing Director, Content Sky UK and Ireland, said: “From space adventures to futuristic fantasy, Sky Sci-Fi will be joining the host of genre-led brands launched in the past year and will offer a new universe for viewers to explore. The re-brand will make it easier for people to find exactly what they want, with fan favourites, a multitude of on demand content, as well as a burst of exciting new shows for sci-fi fanatics”.

At launch, Sky Sci-Fi will offer a selection of Premiere TV movie titles such as Bullet Train Down, Thor: God of Thunder and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The channel has also acquired Stephen King’s sought-after mini-series: IT and Salem’s Lot.

The re-brand follows previous successful Sky TV portfolio changes including the unveiling of Sky Showcase and Sky Max last year and the launch of genre-based channels including Sky Comedy, Sky Crime and Sky Documentaries.

The channel will be linear (152) and on demand, offering hundreds of hours of pure sci-fi, fantasy and supernatural horror and superheroes – the full breadth of content dedicated to the genre will be available on Sky Sci-Fi and streaming service NOW.

The change will come into effect from 1100am on Tuesday 26 July.
