Top-10 small town road trip destinations in the u.s. for 2022.

Need some inspiration for your next road trip? Here are my top-10 best small town road trip destinations in the U.S. for 2022. As the pandemic looms, road trips will continue to be the preferred choice of travel this year. Small towns and cities have a lot to offer, from fewer tourists, affordability, hidden gems and so much more.

This list of small town road trip destinations each offers something unique and inviting for the adventurous road tripper, from ocean escapes to culinary get-aways.

FYI, all of the destinations listed have a population under 50,000, which was my criteria for inclusion. Leave a comment below and tell me which one would be your preferred small town road trip destination.

Venice, Florida – Best Small Town Road Trip Destination for Enjoying the Beach

Everyone has heard of Venice, Italy, but Venice, Florida? Not so much. While the Venice of Florida may not have the historical significance of its sister city in Italy, it certainly has its own charm and appeal. Located on the Gulf side of the state (near the middle), Venice, Florida is one cool coastal community. The city has several beaches with plenty of parking. As a matter of fact, during my visit I never had a problem finding a parking spot. With a population of just 23,000, it’s pretty easy to get around town and not have to contend with crowds or traffic. There are many parks, an extensive and expansive bike trail, lots of great shots and restaurants and so many outdoor activities to enjoy.

Walla Walla, Washington – Best Small Town Road Trip Destination for Wine

Walla Walla is one of the Best Small Town Road Trip Destinations in the U.S.

I have been to Walla Walla several times now. Each visit I seem to fall a bit more in love with this small town located in southeastern Washington. What was once a sleepy farming town, is now a thriving community seemingly focused on one thing…the culinary arts. From wine-making to fine dining and beyond, Walla Walla delivers an exuberant experience that should be on every epicurean’s bucket list.

I have created a comprehensive list of the Best of Walla Walla , from hotels, wineries, activities and more, so be sure to check it out.

Camden, Maine – An Idyllic Seaside City

small town road trips

Camden sits in between Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine and is an idyllic place to visit along the east coast. With a population just under 5000, this is a small seaside community, but with an ideal mix of forests and coastal views. The town is particularly popular during the warmer summer months when visitors flock to the beaches, yet autumn is also a beautiful time of year to visit, with its rich foliage and array of hiking trails. There is no shortage of quaint shops and restaurants. You’ll also find a number of amazing lodging options. When I visited Camden, I stayed at the Camden Harbor Inn , an outstanding place for both lodging and dining.

Carmel by the Sea, California

small town road trips

Carmel-by-the-sea is home to just under 4,000 very affluent residents, and is famous for the Pebble Beach 17-Mile Drive lined with luxurious mansions and coastal views ( Note: Entrance fee is $10.50 ). Its most striking feature may be the Basilica Church, a registered National Historic Landmark. The town has an old world charm about it which has made it popular with writers and artists for many years. The most famous resident of Carmel-by-the-Sea has to be actor/director Clint Eastwood, who played the role of mayor for a number of years. If the rich artistic culture wasn’t enough, the town is also perched on the pacific shore, with beautiful California beaches and a warm, inviting climate.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka-Springs

Eureka Springs is a Victorian mountain village nestled in the Ozarks with copious things to see and do. It has a small population of roughly 2,000 people, and is a secluded, yet welcoming place. If you’re into shopping, there are over 100 boutique shops and galleries. If you like staying at inns and B&B’s, Eureka Springs is said to have more per capita than any place in the country.

You can also zip-line through the forest, watch big cats feed at a wildlife refuge, view breathtaking vistas and scenic overlooks, fish in clear trout streams, photograph waterfalls or stroll through the colorful gardens surrounding an ancient burial ground. If that doesn’t make your spirits soar, check out one of the famous haunted houses. To stir the soul further, head into downtown for some live music at any number of venues—one of the best spots is Basin Park for frequently free community concerts.

Fairhope/Point Clear

The Fairhope/Point Clear area is located along Mobile Bay near the Gulf Coast. It is a place that bestows grandeur and southern charm with some scenery that is almost idyllic. The streets are lined with massive oak, cypress and maple trees, each woven with a confetti of ivy and Spanish moss. The sun has a difficult time piercing the denseness that blankets the trees, but when it does, sun-flares sparkled in a way that makes you feel like you’re driving through the scene straight out of a storybook.

The coast is dotted with docks and boathouses, one right after the other. The homes are finely crafted in a style that could best be described as southern cottage. The look of the area is unique (at least it was to me), so much so that I had to wonder if it was indigenous to the Gulf Coast. You’ll be enamored by the unique beauty that surrounds the Fairhope and Point Clear area.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

small town road trips

Cannon Beach is one of the most trendy, coveted, coastal communities in the state of Oregon. The scenic beauty of the rock croppings on-and-offshore, including the famed “Haystack” rock, will make your beach strolls and photographs like none-other.

There is a vibrant art scene in Cannon Beach, with a number of wonderful galleries and culinary choices. And, the city is certainly setup for strolling; visitors will enjoy the quaint bookstores, shops and bistros, not to mention the plethora of nearby hiking trails with no limit to its coastal access.

Natchez, Mississippi

One of the best Small Town Road Trip Destinations for 2022 is Natchez Mississippi

Natchez is known for its antebellum homes and haunted history. This Mississippi River community beckons you toward a storied past, with roads cutting through canyons eventually arriving at the city’s famous bluffs. Oak limbs with Spanish moss spread wide and welcome guests to the oldest town along this Mighty River. Natchez is bustling with surprises, thanks in large part to a cohort of young locals who left home for a while and returned with new ideas. Revived efforts to highlight the area’s African-American history, along with a rejuvenation of the downtown scene that includes a bevy of brand-new businesses have brought the city into a new era of excitement.

At just 15,000 population, Natchez is worthy of being on this list of small town road trip destinations, here are a few things not to miss when visiting:

  • Natchez National Historical Park.
  • Natchez City Cemetery.
  • The Little Easy for a wonderful breakfast, lunch or dinner.
  • Natchez Brewing Company – Great pizza and fantastic beer.
  • Devereaux Shields House is a lovely B&B to stay.
  • Vicksburg – A great day trip from Natchez.

Hood River, Oregon

Hood River is one of the best Small Town Road Trip Destinations for 2022

Hood River is known for being the capital of the world for wind sports. Located along the banks of the Columbia River, wind sport enthusiasts from around the world flock to this special place known as the Columbia Gorge, where the winds produce incredible waves. Hood River has a lot more than white water to offer, nearby is the Fruit Loop, a cluster of farms producing some of the best fruit in the world, from berries, cherries to peaches. You can stop by a fruit stand or a U-Pick farm and select your own produce right off the vines and trees. There are also a number of wineries in the area. Highly recommend Stave & Stone Winery .

If you enjoy waterfalls, this is the place you want to visit. There are more than 90 waterfalls along the Colombia River Gorge. Some you can drive right to, but most require a short to long hike to reach. The tallest and most famous of all the waterfalls in this area is Multonomah Falls, which is 620’ tall. Mount Hood and the Bonneville Lock & Dam are two more Hood River excursions to explore.

La Connor, Washington

La Conner is one of the Best Small Town Road Trip Destinations in the U.S. for 2022 - Photo by: MikesRoadTrip.com

The old fishing village of La Connor is located in northwestern Washington State. With three museums, restored historic buildings, a plethora of culinary spots, wine tastings, boutique shops, art galleries, and waterfront boardwalk, there is no shortage of things to do in La Connor. The area is surrounded by lush farmland, so you’ll see fresh fruit and veggie stands everywhere.

Perhaps the most iconic thing to do in La Conner is attend the Skagit Valley annual Tulip Festival in April. Nearby is Deception Pass State Park, which is located at the northern part of Whidbey Island , it’s one of the most visited areas in the state, for good reason–the mysterious coves, rugged cliffs and jaw-dropping sunsets will blow you away.

Also nearby is Anacortes, which is where the ferry terminal is located to take road trippers to the stunning San Juan Islands .

Well that’s the last of these small town road trip destinations. If you know of some other amazing small towns, please leave a comment below and share your favorites.

3. Sanibel Island — Florida

This probably isn't a place you'd pass by on a regular road trip, but it's one that's worth going out of your way to visit. Accessible by causeway, the serene and secluded Sanibel Island is a far cry from the rest of Florida. Definitely an excellent place to chill out and disconnect for a few days.

7. Jim Thorpe — Pennsylvania

historic buildings and a townhall surrounded by fall foliage

This small town with fewer than 5,000 residents was formed in the 1950s and named after the legendary Native American Olympian , who started his sports career in nearby Carlisle. The town's 19th-century architecture and majestic mountain views kinda make you feel as if you're in a Swiss Alpine village. It's small but a good place to wander around for an afternoon — most visitors come for the nearby adventuring opportunities like hiking and whitewater rafting.

8. Three Rivers — California

Located conveniently close to Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, this is a prime stop-off village before one plunges into the nature activities the area is known for: whitewater rafting, cave exploration, redwood gazing, and waterfall hikes. Check out Three Rivers Brewing Co. for an afternoon drink — there's also an old-timey sweet shop , a gift store full of handmade goods, and a great Mexican joint.

9. Montclair — New Jersey

Less than an hour from New York City , Montclair is an ideal spot for a short getaway without getting too rural. The town has a vibrant local community with world-class dining — minus the New York City price tags. There's even a swanky rooftop bar at the MC Hotel with impressive views of the region and the Manhattan skyline off in the distance.

10. Kanab — Utah

Kanab is right near Zion National Park, Lake Powell, and the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, so it's popular among explorers looking for some R&R between hikes. The small town has a bit of a Western feel to it, thanks to the architecture and the dramatic mountains in the distance. Be sure to stop at Big Al's for one of their famous burgers.

11. Montpelier — Vermont

This place has nailed the picturesque small town aesthetic . Montpelier is the country's smallest state capital (by population) but has a surprisingly lively music and arts scene. It's home to the New England Culinary Institute, so there's no shortage of great food options. Being in New England, it's obviously beautiful in the fall, and in winter it's also popular for snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice climbing, and skiing.

12. Jacksonville — Oregon

classic yellow car in an US town

This historic gold rush town was founded in the 1850s and is now a National Historic District. It's got a quaint main street with brick buildings and old-fashioned store facades. When you're done exploring downtown, you can hike the nearby Woodland Trails or visit one of the many wineries in the region.

13. Beaufort — South Carolina

The second-oldest city in South Carolina after Charleston, Beaufort is bucolic small town living at its finest. Wander around the streets lined with historic old houses, then tuck into some local seafood — with a glass of sweet tea, of course. Don't miss watching the sun set over the Beaufort River.

14. Berlin — Maryland

Just west of the ever-busy Ocean City, Berlin is a much more calm and chilled-out alternative, oozing with charm. Its Main Street is textbook small town, with cute brick buildings and local shops. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, and galleries to check out, all within walking distance.

15. Nebraska City — Nebraska

This tiny town with fewer than 8,000 residents is especially lovely in the fall. You'll be greeted with beautiful orange foliage and cozy B&Bs where you can stay the night. Spend the day picking apples in a local orchard or just wandering around the welcoming streets of the small downtown area.

16. Paducah — Kentucky

One of nine UNESCO Creative Cities in the US, Paducah is a quiet town set on the Ohio River. It has a burgeoning restaurant scene, with eateries tucked inside repurposed historic houses. The local community is very artsy, drawn to the area by the town's studios, workshops, galleries, and cultural events.

17. Elizabeth City — North Carolina

A pedestrian-friendly city on the coast, Elizabeth City is a cute place to stay for a night or two. Often nicknamed the "Harbor of Hospitality" thanks to its Southern charm and friendly vibe, it's got plenty of great food options for an overnight stay. Elizabeth City is also home to the annual Potato Festival , so time your visit accordingly.

18. Medicine Park — Oklahoma

Tucked away in the Wichita Mountains in the south of the state, this town is nothing but charming. Many of the shops and restaurants are built with locally sourced cobblestones, giving it a distinctive ~ye olde~ feel. It's especially lovely in spring and summer, when people swim and go paddleboarding in Bath Lake or ride bikes and hike around the Lawtonka trail system .

The 15 Best U.S. Small Towns for a Summer Vacation

These fetching towns will put you under their summertime spell.

small town road trips

There's just something about a small town in summer that hits a little differently. Perhaps it's the community festivals, the balmy evening strolls along Main Street, or an ice cream truck rumbling through a leafy neighborhood blaring that all too familiar tune. From picturesque lakeside villages and mountain hamlets to idyllic beachfront communities, these destinations offer plenty of outdoor recreation and simple, nostalgic pleasures. Here are the 15 best U.S. small towns for a summer vacation.

Narrowsburg, New York

The Western Catskills is the place to be when the mercury rises. Perched along the Delaware River, this hamlet of around 390 residents is one of the best small towns in New York and a hot spot for tubing, kayaking, and canoeing. Local tour operator Lander's River Trips offers a range of half-day and full-day river excursions — stop by Narrowsburg Proper general store for snacks and sundries before your outing. Afterward, refuel with pizza at The Laundrette , burgers at The Heron , or elevated comfort food cooked in a wood-burning oven at Cochecton Fire Station . The best bet for local accommodations is the hip Hotel Darby , located on the other side of the river in Pennsylvania, just a 10-minute walk from Narrowsburg.

Buckeye Lake, Ohio

You'd be hard-pressed to find a village that embodies classic Americana more than Buckeye Lake. With a population of about 2,800, it's beloved for its serene lakefront atmosphere and seemingly endless water activities. For a home away from home, book a few nights in one of its beautiful lakefront cottages . Then, wake up refreshed and start the day with a jog or power walk along the four-mile-long Buckeye Lake Dam Walking & Biking Trail , preferably with a beverage from Millersport Coffee . Next, it's into the pristine water you go. Try 3XP Tours ' kayak-biking-brewery expedition that guides you on the lake, trails, and into some of the best breweries (and wineries and restaurants) around town. Or, skip the formal tour and rent a kayak or pontoon for the day and embrace lake life on your own. Wind down with a glass of wine at Buckeye Lake Winery or head to Weldon's for ice cream.

Addison, Texas

Addison is a 4.4-square-mile town with just over 17,000 residents — but an impressive 200 restaurants (the community claims to have the most restaurants per capita of any in the country). For summer fun, make sure to get there around Independence Day for the fireworks show called Addison Kaboom Town . The festivity draws in around 500,000 spectators and many restaurants and hotels host watch parties, converting the entire town into one big block party. Book a stay at either Home2Suites , which provides a stellar view of the fireworks, or the Marriott Addison Quorum , a modern retreat within walking distance of the town's delicious dining options.

Adairsville, Georgia

Welcome to Adairsville, Georgia, population 5,200. When you need a break from the dog days of summer in the Peach State, stop by the Adairsville Depot History Museum , housed in an old railroad depot, to learn about the town's role in the Civil War's Great Locomotive Chase. Then, retreat to Barnsley Resort , a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts with horseback riding, clay target shooting, archery, ax throwing, golf, disc golf, and more. The grounds are also home to a spa, fishing on the lake, and a saltwater pool. And don't miss the Savoy Automobile Museum in the nearby town of Cartersville, featuring exhibits of art deco cars, racing cars, and woodie wagons.

Coronado, California

With fewer than 20,000 residents, Coronado is the little sibling to San Diego. Though it's about a 10-minute drive from downtown, this tied island feels a universe away from the hustle and bustle of the Southern California city. Here you'll find gin-clear waters lapping the shores of pristine beaches and a quaint main street (Orange Avenue) that will have you happily distracted for hours with boutiques, eateries, galleries, theaters, and the Coronado Museum . And given the town's compact size, you can walk or bike practically anywhere. During the summer months, visitors can listen to live music every weekend afternoon at the Ferry Landing.

Post up at Hotel del Coronado , built in 1888 and now a designated National Historic Landmark. If you don't see any ghosts, presidents, royalty, or celebrities during your stay, you can at least tell your friends back home that you stayed at the hotel that's widely believed to have been the inspiration for the Emerald City in L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."

Travelers Rest, South Carolina

As one of the most idyllic small towns in South Carolina , Travelers Rest is exactly as the name describes. For more than three centuries, this northwest South Carolina town has served as a stop for those driving over the Blue Ridge Mountains . Now home to around 8,400 inhabitants, "TR" is home to several popular restaurants like Top Soil , Monkey Wrench Smokehouse , and Tandem Crêperie & Coffeehouse . There's plenty of lodging too, between hotels like Swamp Rabbit Inn TR , a quaint bed-and-breakfast, and Hotel Domestique , a boutique hotel owned by celebrated cyclist George Hincapie, which happens to come with jaw-dropping vistas of the mountains.

The active set can hike or mountain bike the 22-mile Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail or explore Paris Mountain State Park and Jones Gap State Park , which offer campsites. When you're ready to reward yourself for that wilderness romp, raise a glass during the free Music in the Park concert series, held each summer at the amphitheater in TR's Trailblazer Park, a delightful urban green space.

Bardstown, Kentucky

Bardstown is one of the most beautiful small towns in the U.S. and a perfect place to grab a dram. Billed as the "Bourbon Capital of the World," the community of around 13,700 people has nearly a dozen distilleries ( Heaven Hill Distillery , Bardstown Bourbon Company , and Log Still Distillery are three favorites).

Take the time to explore the historic mansion and grounds at My Old Kentucky Home State Park and the hiking trails at the nearby Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest . Afterward, enjoy a drink at Old Talbott Tavern , the oldest Western Stagecoach stop in America, and the oldest bourbon bar in the world (it's also an inn). For a more curated experience, book My Old Kentucky Dinner Train's Bourbon Excursion . You'll cruise through central Kentucky in a restored 1940s vintage dining car and indulge in a bourbon tasting with a master distiller. To keep the theme rolling, stay at the Bourbon Manor Bed & Breakfast , or experience sleeping in a converted jail cell at the lovely Jailer's Inn Bed & Breakfast .

Abilene, Kansas

Home to around 6,500 people, Abilene is as charming as it is historical. While in town, check out the exhibits at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum , which pays homage to the former president's hometown. Then, tour the Seelye Mansion , an "8 Wonders of Kansas'' winner in the architecture category, where you can knock down some pins on a bowling alley built in 1905. Keep the historical vibes going by hopping aboard a 100-year-old steam engine on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad . Before you bid the town adieu, take a spin on a 1901 C.W. Parker Carousel, the oldest operating Parker carousel still in existence, at the Dickinson County Heritage Center . For a little rest, reserve a room at Abilene's Victorian Inn Bed & Breakfast or Engle House Bed & Breakfast .

St. Michaels, Maryland

If the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels looks familiar, you might be a "Wedding Crashers" fan. It just so happens that the Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn classic was filmed right here. But, if that isn't enough to sway you to make the trek to St. Michaels, consider that this town of 1,020 residents is essentially the Hamptons of the mid-Atlantic.

Located on the Miles River, the town dazzles in the warmer months with ample opportunities to sail, kayak, and paddleboard. Pair that with the chance to gorge on Maryland crabs and oysters, chased with water views, and you've got a recipe for the perfect summer vacation.

For a stylish stay, book a room at The Wildset Hotel . The boutique property and on-site restaurant, Ruse , are well worth planning an entire trip around. Take a stroll down Talbot Street to view historic homes from the 1600s, or plan an outing to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park , about 50 minutes outside of town.

Dewey Beach, Delaware

Though the year-round population of Dewey Beach hovers around 350 residents, its summer crowd is much, much larger. But, even with the throngs of beach-goers, this Southern Delaware destination deserves a spot atop your summertime vacation list. With the ocean on one side and the bay on the other, it's a watery paradise, making it the ideal spot to book a charter boat. Back on dry land, stay at Hyatt Place Dewey Beach , located about a mile off the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, and feast at Woody's Dewey Beach , known for having some of the best crab cakes around.

Sheridan, Wyoming

Wyoming is the least populated state in the nation, so it's no surprise it's home to more than its fair share of spectacular small towns. Sheridan (with a population of around 19,700) just so happens to be one of its best. Catch a show at the WYO Theater , watch a polo match at the Big Horn Equestrian Center , or see the cowboys and cowgirls show off their moves at the Sheridan County Rodeo . During your time here, brush up on Sheridan's history and cowboy culture at the Don King Museum and Fort Phil Kearny . You can take in the sounds of summer at Concerts in the Park, which puts on a show every Tuesday, or at the monthly 3rd Thursday street festival.

When you're ready to hang up your cowboy hat, get a room at Sheridan Inn , conceptualized by Buffalo Bill Cody and built in 1892. Or, head to the Mill Inn , a former flour mill at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains.

Hermann, Missouri

Willkommen to Hermann, the Missouri River Valley's crown jewel, which comes with plenty of picturesque German architecture. This community of approximately 2,400 people, originally established in 1837 by German immigrants, is the heart of the state's wine country. A few of our top picks for local wineries include Stone Hill Winery , Adam Puchta Winery , and Martin Brothers Mead . The place to stay among the region's rolling hills is at The Cottage or, more specifically, in one of the property's three tree houses, which provide stunning views of the lush landscape.

Worthwhile pit stops in town include the Deutschheim State Historic Site for a guided tour of two wonderfully preserved homes and Hermann Farm for the grand tram tour, which includes a guided experience to the 1847 Teubner-Husmann home.

New Paltz, New York

New Paltz, a town of less than 10,000 residents, delivers on the picture-perfect summer escape. Wander along boutique-lined Main Street and stop at the Water Street Market, an open-air shopping village filled with antiques, art, and other unique finds. You can pump up your adrenaline hiking the River-to-Ridge Trail or sit back and sip local vintages at one of the 12 wineries along the Shawangunk Wine Trail .

When you're ready for a rest, head to Mohonk Mountain House , a Victorian castle-style resort that's been owned and operated by the Smiley family since its founding in 1869. You could easily spend an entire vacation on the property, playing tennis, horseback riding, or relaxing at the spa.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Surround yourself in summer's glory with a visit to the picturesque New Hampshire town of Bretton Woods. The village sits in the "larger" town of Caroll (with a population of around 820 people), with the Omni Mount Washington Resort serving as the center of the action. During your stay, you'll enjoy award-winning dining and recreational pursuits ranging from golfing on a classic Donald Ross-designed course to whizzing along nine high-flying zip lines.

Other must-see attractions close by include the Mount Washington Cog Railway , an 1869 cog railway that carries thrill-seekers to the top of the Northeast's highest peak, Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet. There's also Crawford Notch State Park , an ideal place for fishing, wildlife viewing, waterfall chasing, and otherworldly mountain vistas.

McCall, Idaho

It's important to keep your mind open to the possibilities during a visit to McCall. That's because, in this small town of around 3,100 residents, you'll find Payette Lake, which is reportedly home to Sharlie, a lake monster, described as a creature "...at least 35 feet long, with a dinosaur-type head, pronounced jaw, humps like a camel, and shell-like skin."

Lake monsters aside, McCall is pretty welcoming. Located in the awe-inspiring West Central Mountains of Idaho, this is a place to bring your activewear, as you'll likely spend your days hiking and horseback riding or mountain biking and waterskiing until the sun goes down. Bird-watching, dinner cruises, whitewater rafting, and paddleboarding are all big draws, too. After working up a sweat, kick back at Salmon River Brewery 's rooftop beer garden, which offers the best view of Payette Lake from downtown. Have dinner at the Clubhouse Restaurant at Jug Mountain Ranch , which has an ideal patio for sunset dining. Then, lay your head at the upmarket Shore Lodge or Hotel McCall , both of which will keep you safe from lake monsters all night long.

INSIDE: Arizona small towns each have a unique history and character-perfect for a road trip! See our fave mining, western & funky artsy spots and work one (or three) into YOUR next road trip!

We needed a pit stop on our Arizona road trip. Sick of truck stops along the Interstate, with their harsh fluorescent lighting and sticky bathroom floors ,  we spied a small signpost pointing toward “downtown historic district” and “Original Route 66.” That combination was too tempting to ignore, so we veered off the exit . . .

. . . and drove into one of the best days of our road trip.

The trick was finding that Arizona small town to visit.

Exactly what type of charm do you find in an Arizona small town?

Most small towns in Arizona are off the beaten path–or at least off the Interstate–and they make a perfect road trip stop.

Although some of these towns are still bustling with the business that got them started, such as mining and cattle ranching, many have reinvented themselves as tourist destinations that celebrate their heritage. You’ll find a TON of charm, and maybe even include a ghost town👻!

small town road trips

The small town we discovered when we followed the signs? It was Winslow! We’ve included it below in our list of 18 favorite Arizona small towns, along with practical info to help you as your plan your trip. Each town is unique and offers up a special bit of Arizona charm.

We hope this helps you drive into one of the best days of  your  road trip too!

Northern Arizona: 7 small towns that are Worth a Visit

1. flagstaff: the highest elevation in the state.

Flagstaff is the largest town in northern Arizona. Old route 66 passes through the southern edge of town, so you get that “classic road trip” vibe. (And there’s a cool Route 66-themed gift shop in the old train station–souvenir alert!).

The main part of town has a “nice old-fashioned downtown” feel, with historic late Victorian brick buildings housing bars, restaurants, and shops. Northern Arizona University is also based in Flagstaff, which means the town is not just a tourist haven.

small town road trips

Of all the Arizona small towns, Flagstaff has the highest elevation in the state , at nearly 7,000 feet .

Flagstaff’s high altitude means temperatures stay cool in summer, a refreshing break from the desert heat. And in winter? Skiing at nearby slopes! Located midway between Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks, it’s a central base for exploring the natural wonders in northern Arizona.

  • What we love: The cute downtown, & beautiful fall foliage
  • Fave Eats: Tourist Home All Day Cafe (because we love a good breakfast 🥞)
  • Highlights: Historic downtown, Route 66, hiking in nearby mountains, winter skiing, cool in summer
  • Road Trips: Route 66, Grand Canyon, Sedona
  • Where to stay: Hotels in Flagstaff

2. Kingman: Cars, Trains, and . . . Electricity?

Kingman was established as a railroad town in the 1880s, and soon grew thanks to mining in the surrounding area. Historic Route 66 passes right through town; Kingman is the westernmost Arizona town on the so-called “mother road.”

We thought it was going to be a “drive-by,” but we ended up enjoying our visit here. Andy Devine, one of the early stars of western movies, is from Kingman. To celebrate this celluloid hero, the portion of Route 66 that goes through the center of town is known as “Andy Devine Avenue.”

small town road trips

Today Kingman has a real “road trip” feel and celebrates its motoring and railroad heritage. The cool multi-purpose Powerhouse Visitor Center is in an old converted power station. You’ll also find the Arizona Route 66 Museum and the Arizona Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum there.

Across the street in Locomotive Park train geeks will love the ogling historic old steam engine #3579. And there is no shortage of Route 66 photo-ops: the logo is displayed all over town on signs and painted on the street.

Interesting things to do in Kingman Arizona abound for everyone in your road trip crew. It makes a great base for exploring northwestern Arizona, and the western ends of the Grand Canyon.

  • What we love: The Powerhouse Visitor Center, Engine #3579, retro motels on Route 66
  • Fave eats: Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner (for when you just gotta get a burger, fries & shake🥤)
  • Highlights: Route 66, Arizona Route 66 Museum
  • Road Trips: Route 66, Las Vegas to Grand Canyon
  • Where to stay: Hotels in Kingman

3. Page: Horseshoe Bend . . . but so much more

Page serves as the gateway to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area , which includes such attractions as Lake Powell and the famous Horseshoe Bend. Page is a relatively new community, established in the late 1950s to support workers building the dam.

Today it’s a friendly town with the most hotel rooms in the “ Arizona Strip ,” (the name for this far northern part of the state), which makes it a great base for touring this area of northern Arizona near the Utah borders.

view of horseshoe bend, red rocks with colorado river snaking through page arizona

Many people pop into Page, make a quick stop at Horseshoe Bend , then move on. But we found there’s a lot more to see and do in the area. Day trips from here include Vermillion Cliffs, Lee’s Ferry, and even the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

We also love some of the lesser-known spots, such as Glen Canyon Dam Overlook and hiking to the (sort of secret) Hanging Garden Trail . Be sure to allow some time for water sports, whether it’s rafting down the Colorado River or boating on Lake Powell. No matter what you choose, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Page AZ .

  • What we love: The Hanging Garden Trail, Glen Canyon Dam Overlook
  • Fave eats: Big John’s Texas BBQ (Brisket & live Blues, what could be better?)
  • Highlights: Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon
  • Road Trips: Grand Canyon North Rim
  • Where to stay: Hotels in Page

4. Seligman: Birthplace of “Historic Route 66”

This little hamlet, bypassed by Interstate 40, preserved the Route 66 legend. In 1987 locals petitioned the State of Arizona and had it designated a historic highway. Rumors are that Seligman inspired the location of Radiator Springs for the movie  Cars .

Today this no-stoplight town is a pilgrimage for Route 66 fans, who find retro motels, memorabilia shops . . . and lots of vintage cars parked around town (you might even get to meet Tow Mater!)

  • What we love: All the vintage cars scattered around town
  • Fave Eats: Delgadillo’s Sno Cap Drive-In (Drive-in? Route 66? YES!!!)
  • Highlights: Tow Mater, Antiquing
  • Road Trips: Route 66
  • Where to stay: Retro hotels on Route 66

5. Williams: Gateway to the Grand Canyon

Two things distinguish Williams: Route 66 and the Grand Canyon . Williams describes itself as “the best-preserved stretch of Route 66.” It was the last town on the “mother road” to be bypassed by Interstate 40 (in 1984), so it hung on to its Route 66 identity.

The center of town, with its diners, motels, and shops is a designated National Historic District. We first came here to use it as a base for visiting the Grand Canyon but found the town itself charming.

building with statue of cow in front

Williams is also the town nearest to the main entrance of Grand Canyon National Park (about 50 miles due north), which makes it a great base for exploring the area. The town is the headquarters of the Grand Canyon Historic Railway and Hotel.

Because of its proximity to the park, many Grand Canyon tour operators are based in Williams. Kaibab National Forest surrounds the town, with plenty of hiking, biking, and fishing opportunities for outdoor lovers.

  • What we love: Old town charm near the Grand Canyon
  • Fave Eats: Fiesta Mexican Grill (love me a good burrito!)
  • Highlights: Grand Canyon, Strolling Route 66
  • Road Trips: Grand Canyon, Route 66
  • Where to stay: Hotels in Williams

6. Winslow: Yep, the place with “the corner”!

For anyone who has ever listened to a Classic Rock radio station and heard the lyrics, “well I’m standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona . . . ” Yep, this is the place! This is one of the small Arizona towns along old Route 66 which has capitalized on the Jackson Browne/Glenn Frey song made famous by the rock group Eagles. Get your 70s rock fix at the park that commemorates “ Standing on a corner Winslow Arizona ” where there’s even (you knew this was coming!) a flatbed Ford.

Route 66 sign on roadbed, Winslow Arizona

Winslow’s other claim to fame is the La Posada Winslow Hotel (we loved our recent stay there!), one of the original 1930s-era Fred Harvey railroad hotels designed by Mary Colter along the Santa Fe railroad line. Current owners renovated and reopened the southwestern-style luxury property in 1997.

Today it contains a top-notch restaurant and art gallery in addition to comfy guest rooms. It makes an elegant old-world stopover while cruisin’ Route 66. And check out these other things to do in Winslow Arizona .

  • What we love: Classic Rock at the Park, Trainspotting
  • Fave Eats: Turquoise Room at La Posada (dinner’s great, breakfast is AMAZING!)
  • Highlights: Standing on the Corner Park, La Posada Hotel
  • Road Trips: Route 66, 4 Corners/Monument Valley
  • Where to stay: Hotels in Winslow

PRO TIP: Go retro in Northern Arizona! Stay at one of these fabulous hotels on Route 66 in Arizona !

7. Honorable Mention: Sedona-Red Rocks & Blue Skies

You may be wondering why I didn’t include Sedona in the above list. While Sedona is a wonderful destination, and you’ll find plenty of reasons to visit Sedona (especially in the fall) , it’s hard to classify it as a “small town.”

Shopping abounds along State Route 89A, although much of it is in clusters of small strip malls. And this road gets super jammed during weekends, so you’re not likely to go for a random stroll.

small town road trips

Sedona is best appreciated away from highway 89A–that is, enjoying the hiking amid the magnificent red rocks, or chilling out at a spa. By all means, check out Sedona, just don’t expect a “quaint small town” atmosphere. For a “village-esque” atmosphere, head over to the Tlaquepaque complex, a beautiful cluster of shops, galleries, and restaurants resembling a Mexican village.

  • What we love: Hiking the red rocks, Tlaquepaque shopping
  • Fave Eats: Mariposa (swanky, Latin-inspired spot with amazing views)
  • Highlights: Cathedral & Bell Rocks, Vortexes, Tlaquepaque
  • Road Trips: Red Rocks & Red Wine
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Sedona

PRO TIP: For small-town charm NEAR Sedona, check out Cottonwood & Jerome (listed below)

Central Arizona: You need to see these 5 Adorable Arizona Small Towns

8. cottonwood: water & wine.

Cottonwood sits alongside the Verde River in the valley just north of Jerome. Due to its location along a river, Cottonwood is a unique small Arizona town: it began its life as a farming community in the late 1800s. The cute main street has a midcentury feel.

Our first visit to Cottonwood in 2013 showed a town with “good bones” but not a lot going on. However, all those storefronts with potential couldn’t stay empty for long! On recent visits, we’ve been delighted to see a town full of shops, cafes, and wine tasting rooms. (Be sure to visit NORTH Main St.–that’s the cute part 😊)

small town road trips

Cottonwood has stayed true to its agricultural roots. Tuzigoot National Monument is just outside of town, the stone remains of this Indian pueblo providing evidence that this has been a prime growing country for centuries. The Verde Valley Wine Trail provides more modern evidence: rows of vines grace the gently sloping hills surrounding town and that musky smell of fermenting grapes permeates the air. Over 20 wineries and tasting rooms are open for sampling in and around the town.

  • What we love: shopping on North Main St.
  • Fave Eats: Bing’s Burger Station (hubby loves the classic cars parked outside!)
  • Highlights: Verde Valley Wine Trail; Tuzigoot National Monument
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Cottonwood

9. Globe: Cattle, Copper, and Cute!

Globe was founded in the 1870s on copper mining and cattle, and both are still important industries today. This central Arizona small town is equidistant from Phoenix and Tucson and makes a nice day trip or weekend destination.

Take a walking tour of the historic downtown. Visit the Gila County Historical Museum and explore the work of local artists at the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts (in the former courthouse).

small town road trips

Sitting in the middle of the Tonto National Forest , Globe is near several native American historic sites, such as the Tonto National Monument (cliff dwellings), as well as Besh Ba Gowah Archaeological Park. The 3,500-foot elevation transitions between the saguaro-filled desert and ponderosa pine forest. Wildflower lovers come to Globe for some spectacular natural displays.

BONUS: Keep an eye out for interesting wildlife–we had to break for a tarantula crossing the road! 🕷😱

  • What we love: The Sunday morning Farmers’ Market, Tonto NM
  • Fave Eats: Bravo Americo Moderno (wood-fired pizza!!!)
  • Highlights: Verde Canyon Railway, Tuzigoot National Monument
  • Road Trips: East Central Arizona/Mogollon Rim
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Globe

10. Jerome: Wicked (& a little creepy 👻)

Jerome is a unique former copper mining town that’s perched up high on Cleopatra Hill, not far from Sedona. It’s a hair-raising drive up a twisty road to get there. (I need to look straight ahead-not down!) But the good part is the view of the surrounding valley is spectacular. You can even see many of Sedona’s red rocks in the distance.

Jerome is an Arizona Victorian small town perched on a mountain, here is the 1898 Hotel Connor with the red rocks of Sedona in the background

Jerome once had so many saloons it was called “ The Wickedest Town in America .” Now you can browse in funky shops and wet your whistle at atmospheric bars and restaurants. Planning on whoopin’ it up old-tyme miner style during a night on the town? We recommend staying in one of the cute Bed & Breakfasts (or the allegedly haunted Jerome Grand Hotel). You won’t want to tackle the drive down that mountain late at night after a few drinks.

  • What we love: Snacking & browsing the hilly, winding streets
  • Fave Eats: The Clinkscale -Casual B/L/D in a sleek setting
  • Highlights: Jerome State Historic Park ; Haunted Jerome Tour
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Jerome

11. Prescott: Epitome of Small Town America

Prescott may be one of the most charming Arizona small towns. A classic old courthouse anchors the central square. (Remember the old Back to the Future movies? It wouldn’t be surprising to see Marty McFly zipping by in his SteamPunk DeLorean.) Pretty Victorian homes and cottages line the downtown streets.

Prescott Courthouse in background, compass rose on pavement in front, arizona small towns

Restaurants, boutiques, antique shops, cafes, and western wear outfitters surround the courthouse square. Visit historic “Whiskey Row,” so called because that’s where all the “hootin’ & hollerin'” happened. Today you can do a bit of hootin’ & hollerin’ of your own on Whiskey Row, as you get your Western on . . . many of the bars feature live music.

That western atmosphere is legit: Prescott is also home to the world’s oldest rodeo , with the grounds about a half mile northwest of downtown. Nearby Prescott National Forest and Watson Lake State Park provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits.

  • What we love: Hanging out in one of the cafes along the square.
  • Fave Eats: Bistro St. Michael-Breakfast & Burgers right on the square.
  • Highlights: Sharlott Hall Museum ; hiking at Watson Lake Park
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Prescott

12. Honorable Mention: Scottsdale: Big city Small town

Scottsdale is a super-popular destination, and there’s an Old West feel to Old Town Scottsdale. But it stopped being a small town a long time ago. But with just over 250,000 people, it’s about the same size as Richmond, VA, and Toledo, OH.

small town road trips

Scottsdale is worth visiting: great restaurants, terrific shopping (including a gorgeous mall with a Neiman Marcus & a Nordstrom), as well as some wonderful museums, including Western Spirit Scottsdale Museum of the West (a terrific Smithsonian Affiliate). It’s just not a small town.

  • What we love: All the public art scattered around Old Town
  • Fave Eats: Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila (because grilled Mahi tacos & guac with pomegranate seeds are a joy to behold
  • Highlights: Western Spirit Museum ; Native American Jewelry Shops
  • Road Trips: Western AZ or Mogollon Rim
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Old Town Scottsdale

13. ajo: creative, folksy & outdoorsy.

Ajo is a small town in southwestern that is in the midst of a revitalization. A former copper mining town (like Bisbee, below), Ajo is the nearest town to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument . It also gets a lot of traffic from people headed down to the beach at Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) Mexico.

small town road trips

In recent years Ajo has embraced an artistic culture, with several creative programs to attract artists. The result is a mixture of mining history with a creative culture , all centered around one of the prettiest plazas in Arizona.

  • What we love: The can-do artistic attitude
  • Fave Eats: Agave Grill
  • Highlights: Curley School Arts & Hotel Comples, Plaza
  • Road Trips: Southwestern Arizona
  • Where to Stay: Sonoran Desert Inn

14. Bisbee: Funky, Artsy & Historic

Bisbee, Arizona was established in 1876 as a copper mining town tucked away in the Mule Mountains southeastern part of Arizona. The mine is no longer operational, but Bisbee has now transformed itself into a cool and funky destination with a sort of “Victorian-meets-Midcentury” kind of vibe.

Street in Bisbee, Arizona with mountain in background

Learn how copper helped shape both the town⏤and the nation⏤at the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum , and then see the real deal underground on a Queen Mine Tour . Browse Bisbee’s many art galleries, and spend the night (or 3) at one of the town’s picturesque bed and breakfasts.

  • What we love: The funky vibe & the classic cars
  • Fave Eats: Bisbee Breakfast Club (the original!)
  • Highlights: Queen Mine Tour, Staircases
  • Road Trips: Southeast Arizona, Classic Cars
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Bisbee

15. Patagonia: Chill at a Bird-lover’s Paradise

Patagonia is a small town nestled high in the Santa Rita Mountains, about an hour southeast of Tucson. Once a mining town, Patagonia today is focused on cattle ranching and recreation. The wine-growing region of Sonoita is just a few miles north.

small town road trips

The Sonoita Creek flows through Patagonia year-round (a rarity in Arizona’s dry climate). As a result, the region is a popular flyway for many unique types of birds⏤and is a great spot for birdwatchers. Downtown Patagonia has a few funky art galleries, shops, and cafes. The town’s high altitude (4,500 feet) keeps it cool in the summer, and many visitors like to stay for a week, enjoying nearby State Park at Patagonia Lake AZ , or ropin’ and ridin’ at the historic Circle Z Ranch .

  • What we love: The low-key cowboy vibe
  • Fave Eats: Wagon Wheel Saloon (fancy it ain’t, authentic? Yup!)
  • Highlights: Fairs on the town green, Patagonia Lake
  • Road Trips: South Central Arizona
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Patagonia

small town road trips

16. Tombstone: Hootin’, Hollerin’ Wild West🤠

small town road trips

It would be hard to get more “Old West” in Arizona small towns than Tombstone. This is home to the famous “ OK Corral ,” where the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday gunned down the ornery Clanton-McLaury gang. But there’s a lot more to Tombstone, including a rich silver mining history and clashes with the Apaches.

Tombstone has done much to preserve its Old West atmosphere. The main street is still dirt, and cars have to share the road with horses! Western wear shops, restaurants, and saloons line the wooden sidewalks. Historic sights include the Birdcage Theater and Tombstone Courthouse. But be sure to allow some time to see the “shootout:” it’s re-enacted daily.

  • What we love: The corny Wild West atmosphere
  • Fave Eats: Big Nose Kate’s Saloon (worth it for the name alone!)
  • Highlights: Gunfight re-enactment; Boot Hill Cemetary
  • Road Trips: Southeastern Arizona
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Tombstone

small town road trips

17. Tubac: Artsy Historic Fun

Tubac is a small Arizona town about 50 miles south of Tucson that today is a thriving artist colony. Unlike most Arizona small towns, the history of Tubac predates mining and cattle. Because of its location along the Santa Cruz River, it was a settlement for native tribes. Many of these native tribes greeted the Spanish Missionaries when they arrived in the late 1600s.

History buffs should visit Tumacacori National Historic Park just outside of town. Here, hundreds of years and layers of history mingle together, incorporating Native Peoples, Spanish Missionaries, and Mexican and American soldiers. Tubac’s multiple art galleries line the sleepy streets of Tubac. The Tubac Center of the Arts hosts rotating exhibits, art workshops, and performances.

  • What we love: Great Mexican pottery
  • Fave Eats: Elvira’s-funky Mexican in a hip setting
  • Highlights: Art galleries; Tubac Presidio Historic Park
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Tubac

small town road trips

18. Yuma: An Old West Border Town

Yuma is a small Arizona town in the extreme southwest corner of the state. Sitting along the banks of the Colorado River made Yuma a strategic location in the 18th and 19th centuries. Initially, it was missionaries who traveled this route. Passing through Yuma became one of the fastest ways to get out west during the California Gold Rush.

small town road trips

Today visitors to Yuma can get the feel of a real “old west” town by visiting the historic downtown. The center of town took off during the gold rush years. Yuma was also home to the Yuma Territorial Prison , which is now a state park. (The prison figured largely in the classic Western movie 3:10 to Yuma ). Visit the Colorado River State Historic Park to learn about the importance of the crossing throughout the past few centuries.

  • What we love: The mixture of old west & border town
  • Highlights: Territorial Prison Museum; Downtown
  • Road Trips: Southwest Arizona
  • Where to Stay: Hotels in Yuma

small town road trips

These Arizona small towns help to tell the fascinating history of the state. They all sit amid Arizona’s fabulous scenery, under those magnificent blue skies. The combination makes each of them a great destination for a few days’ excursion.

The Baby Boomer's Guide To Travel

8 Tiny Towns to For Your Small Town America Road Trip

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

When is the last time that you visited small town America on a boomer road trip ? While metropolitan U.S. cities like New York, Chicago, Atlanta or Los Angeles get most of the travel attention, you’re doing yourself a disfavor by not including an off-the-beaten-path small town in some of your travel plans.

By featuring eight of my small town America favorites, I’m encouraging you to drive the backroads , walk the main streets, enjoy the community celebrations, and meet the citizens (they’ll be happy to talk to you) in the villages and tiny towns scattered throughout the United States .

Why not use my ideas to create a tiny town road trip? Now that’s my kind of boomer travel adventure !

Table of Contents

Stevensville, Montana, population 2,286

Stevensville, Montana is one of our five small town America favorites. Click through to find out why.

Well, of course I’m going to include Stevensville, Montana as a small town America favorite. Alan and I live here! And it took moving to a tiny town to appreciate this way of living.

I’ve seen more parades since we moved to Stevensville than I have in my entire life. As a former majorette in a marching band, I KNOW parades.

But seriously, Stevensville is Montana’s first permanent settlement, which the town celebrates during June’s Western Heritage Days  festivities, including a parade down Main Street. Or you can come back in August for the Creamery Picnic and another parade.

History buffs will want to visit St. Mary’s Mission , the true beginning of Stevensville.

However, Alan and I are drawn to the outdoor recreational opportunities in Stevensville. We can access any number of trails into the Bitterroot Mountains for a hike before breakfast.

Kootenai Creek Trail is one of our favorites. And nearby forest roads provide plenty of off-road options for riding our ATV.

Cyclists will appreciate the 50-mile Bitterroot Trail , a paved path that travels through the Bitterroot Valley from Missoula to Hamilton. Alan enjoys riding the portion between Stevensville and Victor or Stevensville to Florence (and of course back).

Want to stay and explore awhile? Bitterroot River Bed and Breakfast or the historic Stevensville Hotel are both within walking distance of Main Street.

There’s so much to tell you about Stevensville and the Bitterroot Valley that the writing’s on the wall. I need to create a separate article about my adopted home town.

Blue Ridge, Georgia, population 1,283

A train negotiates a curve in the tracks through farmland near Blue Ridge, GA.

Growing up in the Atlanta suburbs, I remember many fall trips to the North Georgia mountains to see the autumn leaves. Blue Ridge was one of the small towns along our route.

Reading Debi Lander’s article on the best things to do in Blue Ridge, Georgia , brings back so many memories of stopping at scenic overlooks before enjoying a meal in this tiny town.

Of course these days, I’d be looking for active things to do in Blue Ridge. Summer offers the opportunity to cool off while tubing the Toccoa River or fly fishing on a nearby stream. A fall train ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway would be absolutely beautiful.

My plans for exploring Blue Ridge would include booking a vacation rental so that I take advantage of all the area has to offer boomer travelers.

Bluff, Utah, population 244

small town road trips

When it comes to tiny towns, Bluff in southeastern Utah definitely qualifies. And, it’s one of my favorites.

Bluff, within a 2-hour drive of Moab, Utah; Durango, Colorado; and Farmington, New Mexico ; makes a convenient headquarters for exploring the canyonlands of the Colorado Plateau . If you’re looking for sparsely populated (and untouristed) wide-open spaces with dramatic scenery, this is it.

From Bluff, Alan and I like to drive Combs Wash over to Natural Bridges National Monument . On the return drive, we’re likely to stop at Valley of the Gods .

But save time to appreciate this small town. Founded in April 1880 by Mormon settlers, many of the original structures remain, earning the town a spot on the National Register of Historic Paces. You’ll also find artists and authentic Navajo fry bread.

I recommend lodging at Desert Rose Resort & Cabins (Alan and I have stayed in both a cabin and a hotel-style room) or Bluff Dwellings Resort (on our list for next time).

If you’re visiting Monument Valley , drive the 50 miles to stay in Bluff. I much prefer it over staying in Kayenta and I’ve done both.

Ogunquit, Maine, population 1,571

Lobster roll in Ogunquit

Confession time. Alan and I haven’t made it, yet to Ogunquit. But contributing writer, Vanessa Chiasson, wrote about this Maine city for us in Romantic Boomer Getaway to Ogunquit, Maine . And, after reading her article, I added Ogunquit to my small town America list.

What attracts me to this Maine seaside village? Noshing on Lobster rolls. Driving twisty country roads. Tidepooling on the rocky Atlantic coastline at Ogunquit Beach.

Crowded with vacationers in the summer, I’d choose Ogunquit as the last stop on an early fall Northeast Coast road trip. The Cliff House would make the perfect headquarters for relaxing from all the road trip fun.

Ouray, Colorado, population 978

Ouray, Colorado, is one of our small town America favorites. Read why we think it makes a fun boomer travel experience.

If you’re looking for a town that’s held on to its historical significance, visit Ouray, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains. Two-thirds of the town’s original Victorian structures are still used as shops, galleries, restaurants and homes. And most hotels in Ouray are within walking distance of the main streets.

Alan and I visited this tiny Colorado town once during a 4th of July weekend. One of the highlights: a parade down Main Street where firemen sprayed the crowd with water from the fire hose.

Or maybe it was that time we were having dinner in the Outlaw Restaurant during a Jeep Jamboree. A motorbike roared right through the door and up to the bar—with the owner on the back!

Ouray owes its beginnings to the gold and silver mining boom of the late 1800’s. That legacy has left active boomer travelers with a maze of hiking and four-wheel-drive trails providing access to Colorado’s “Swiss Alps.”

We’ve had so much fun exploring  Yankee Boy Basin , Last Dollar Road and Engineer’s Pass. Not into four-wheeling? Driving the Million Dollar Highway  will do.

Mendocino, California, population 715

Mendocino, California, is one of our small town America favorites. Click through to find out why.

During a coastal California road trip , Alan and I discovered the seaside charms of Mendocino in the northern part of the state.   Our headquarters at  Sea Rock Inn offered relaxing views and walkable access to this quaint Victorian village.

Although the visit included stormy weather, as soon as the rain stopped, we headed for the trails at Mendocino Headlands State Park to watch the surf pound into the rocks below the cliffs

Coastal Living calls Mendocino a dream town for good reason. Next time, we’ll enjoy coastal walks on Glass Beach and Bowling Ball Beach, ride the Skunk Train, go wine tasting at nearby vineyards or enjoy a California seafood festival or two.

Micanopy, Florida, population 643

Micanopy, Florida, is one of our small town America favorites. Read why.

The small village of Micanopy—population 600+—proves there’s more to Florida than beach resorts or Walt Disney World. Located south of Gainesville, Micanopy’s town center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stroll through antique shops or my favorite, Mosswood Farm Store , where visitors learn about the old way of doing things before we mechanized our lives. The baked goods that they prepare on site are delicious, too!

Later drive to Cross Creek , the home of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. She wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Yearling , on a manual typewriter in the living room.

Looking for something more active? Enjoy a morning kayaking on the Ichetucknee River . Or explore the many springs when you include this tiny town on a North Central Florida road trip .

Staying at Herlong Mansion Bed and Breakfast or Micanopy Inn will add to your small town America experience.

Republic, Washington, population 1,090

Republic, Washington, is one of our small town America favorites. Why did we include it? Read on.

Another town with mining history, Alan and I visited Republic, Washington on the way to Canada at the beginning of our Alaska Highway road trip . Although we only stayed the night at the Northern Inn , the adventure opportunities we learned about will bring us back for sure.

Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the many ATV trails . And, of course, there’s hiking, birding, fishing and nine lakes to visit.

Or you might enjoy digging for fossils at the Stonerose Interpretive Center & Eocene Fossil Site. The K- Diamond-K Guest Ranch looks like a good choice for next time. You know how we love guest ranches.

What do you think of my 8 tiny town suggestions? Of course I’ll be adding more as Alan and I continue to explore small town America.

Top 10 articles are a dime a dozen and often quite subjective. We wanted to create a top 10 list of the best small city road trip destinations that would be fair and worthy of being on such a list. So, we enlisted the world’s most road tripped man, Mike of MikesRoadTrip.com , to give us some of his favorite road trip destinations. Let the open road be your guide! | Photo: Mike Shubic of MikesRoadTrip.com

I have road tripped all over the U.S. As a matter of fact I’ve been to 49 of the 50 states, only the last frontier of Alaska eludes me. Needless to say, I’ve had an opportunity to visit many amazing small cities around the country. This list will absolutely inspire a road trip; each destination featured has its own unique attributes. So rent a car  and join me on an amazing road trip adventure!

In order to make the list, each of the cities had to possess much of the following criteria:

  • Combination of high-end and unique lodging options
  • Fantastic restaurants
  • Cultural significance
  • Good selection of amenities
  • Awe-inspiring sights or scenery
  • Some level of uniqueness and/or be remarkable
  • Outdoor and indoor activities

Without further ado, I present the Top 10 Small City Road Trip Destinations in the U.S. for 2018:

#10 Fairhope/Point Clear, Alabama (Tied for #10 with 98 votes)

Closest Major City : Mobile, Alabama (20 miles) Closest Major Airport : Pensacola, Florida (55 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Grand Hotel – This historic Alabama Gulf Coast hotel was built in 1847 and has a fascinating story with an outstanding location. Recommended Restaurants : Panini Pete’s, Market by the Bay, R Bistro and Saltwater Grill. Many other great looking restaurants, I just didn’t get a chance to try them all. Don’t Miss : Driving the coast — stop by Mullet Point Park, Pelican Point, South Beach and Knoll Parks. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by Punta Clara Kitchen, a decadent candy shop.

#10 Jackson, New Hampshire (Tied for #10 with 98 votes)

Jackson is one of the smaller cities on this list with a population of less than 1,000, however what it lacks in size, it makes up for in grandeur. The bright red covered bridge that one must pass through to enter Jackson sets the stage for something special. Nestled within the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Jackson offers a lot of stunning scenery to explore. From the seemingly endless cascade of Jackson Falls, to the highest point in all of New England up the Mt. Washington Auto Road, to the myriad hikes, snow skiing, kayaking, river rafting to the countless waterfalls, this region of New Hampshire is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.

Jackson is a place to get away from it all and yet feel right at home. The charming community has been attracting guests for over 200 years. There are many great lodging choices and some fantastic restaurants nearby.

Closest Major City : Portland, Maine (73 miles) Closest Major Airport : Boston Logan (147 miles) Lodging Recommendations : In nearby Conway is one of the coolest and most unique hotels I’ve ever seen. It’s called Adventure Suites and each room has a completely different over-the-top theme — from the Cave to the Haunted Castle to the Club, complete with a disco dance floor and top-notch sound system. Right in Jackson is the Snowflake Inn , a regal structure situated on six acres that offers guests an at-home experience. Recommended Restaurants : Cider Co and 1785 Inn & Restaurant. Don’t Miss : The drive up Mt. Washington.

#9 Leavenworth, Washington (5% of the vote)

Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed community, and when I say “themed,” I mean embraced through-and-through — from its architecture to the attire. The look/feel of Leavenworth is reminiscent of a hillside community along the banks of the Rhine River. With over 700 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, you can devour nature. Or, you can relax at one of the many luxurious lodging choices in town, several right next to the Wenatchee River (the West’s version of the Rhine!). If you’re into spas, theater, festivals, geocaching, wine tours, museums, or drinking beer from a stein, you’ll find that too.

Leavenworth is also well known for its holiday festivities, with millions of lights, sleigh rides, sledding right in town and carolers walking the streets spreading cheer. In the winter, snow skiing is just up the hill at Stevens Pass. Leavenworth is a four-season destination with some top-notch lodging, spas, restaurants and an abundance of outdoor activities.

Closest Major City : Seattle, Washington (134 miles) Closest Major Airport: SeaTac International Airport (140 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Run of the River Inn & Refuge is a secluded and romantic location just outside of town. Bavarian Lodge is right in town and within walking distance to everything. Restaurant Recommendations : Viscontis, Watershed, Manna, SOUTH, Pavz Cafe/Bistro, and Munchen Haus for some authentic German food. Don’t Miss : The Holiday Season.

#8 Eureka Springs, Arkansas (5% of the vote)

Eureka Springs is a Victorian mountain village nestled in the Ozarks with copious things to see and do. You can zip-line through the forest, watch big cats feed at a wildlife refuge, view breathtaking vistas and scenic overlooks, fish in clear trout streams, photograph waterfalls or stroll through the colorful gardens surrounding an ancient burial ground — if that doesn’t make your spirits soar, check out one of the famous haunted houses. To stir the soul further, head into downtown for some live music at any number of venues — one of the best spots is Basin Park for frequently free community concerts.

If you’re into shopping, there are over 100 boutique shops and galleries. If you like staying at inns and B&B’s, Eureka Springs is said to have more per capita than any place in the country. Eureka Springs always seems to have something going on, from festivals to concerts; it’s a place that has a contagious energy.

Closest Major City : Springfield, Missouri (83 miles) Closest Major Airport : Kansas City Airport (248 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Cliff Cottage Inn is a cluster of bungalows located on a hillside overlooking downtown. There are eight rooms from which to choose from—each themed and named for a well-known author. Grand Central Hotel is a historic property located right in the heart of town with a great on-site restaurant. Restaurant Recommendations : Local Flavor Cafe, Grand Taverne, Mud Street Cafe and Thai House Restaurant. Don’t Miss : Blue Spring Heritage Center.

#7 Charlottesville, Virginia (6% of the vote)

Charlottesville is located along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. During its long and illustrious existence, Charlottesville (aka C’Ville) has been able to maintain its small town charm. C’Ville has churned out three U.S. Presidents, including our third, Thomas Jefferson, whose presence is still felt, remembered and revered. As a matter of fact, the University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson and is located right in the heart of C’Ville.

The focal point of the community is the Downtown Mall, where on Saturdays you’ll find many of the local restaurateurs buying their ingredients at the farmers market. You’ll also discover a rich art scene, over 20 wineries and some award-winning small-batch breweries to explore. With its fertile land and over 200 restaurants, Charlottesville is at the center of the culinary food scene, with many of the chefs and restaurants receiving national recognition. There are also some fantastic lodging choices, historical sites and a plethora of activities in Charlottesville, making it without question one of the best small city road trip destinations in the country.

Closest Major City : Richmond, Virginia (71 miles) Closest Major Airport : Dulles Airport (102 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Boar’s Head Resort or Clifton Inn . Restaurant Recommendations : The Local, Clifton Inn, MAS Tapas, Brookville Restaurant, CO, and The Whiskey Jar. Don’t Miss : Monticello – Thomas Jefferson’s amazing estate.

#6 Durango, Colorado (7% of the vote)

Durango is a city that has it all, from city life, outdoor experiences to culinary delights. With water activities, bike and walking trails, to a nearby ski resort, there is no wrong time of year to visit. If you’re into adventure, Durango has you covered with zip-lining, hiking, biking, rafting, skiing, dude-ranches and a whole lot more. Looking for a more low-key experience? Walk the well-preserved historic streets lined with unique shopping and restaurants. Need a break from the walk? Pop into one of many local breweries for a taste of Durango. Or, hop on the Durango & Silverton train for a number of seasonal rides to see the area’s stunning landscape.

Durango is ideally positioned for outings to Mesa Verde National Park, Vallecito Lake and other natural surroundings, which will keep you captivated during your visit. Green trees in the spring, stunning autumn leaves in the fall and snow-covered branches in the winter make Durango one of the best small city road trip destinations in the country.

Closest Major City : Albuquerque, New Mexico (215 miles) Closest Major Airport : Albuquerque International Sunport (218 miles) Lodging Recommendations : The General Palmer Hotel and Strater Hotel are nice historic properties right in downtown. The Blue Lake Ranch is also an excellent choice a bit outside of Durango on a secluded 200-acre ranch. Restaurant Recommendations : Ken & Sue’s, Mahogany Grill, Ore House, and Carver Brewing Co for breakfast. Don’t Miss : Riding the rails of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train.

#5 Bozeman, Montana (7% of the vote)

Bozeman is nestled within the Gallatin Valley of the western Rocky Mountains, perfectly positioned for excursions to Yellowstone National Park, Chico Hot Springs, Hyalite Canyon or the Lewis & Clark Caverns. Surrounded by pristine rivers and nature’s magnificent canvas of trees, majestic mountains, rippling waterfalls, and open prairies of wildlife moseying through their day make Bozeman an incredible small city road trip destination.

Slip out of your hiking or fishing gear and into evening attire for a show at the 1900’s Ellen’s Theater. Once known as a major stop for the Vaudeville circuit, its gilded carvings add an ambiance of elegance as you watch the performance. Bozeman has some superb lodges and guest ranches that really embrace the wide-open space and cowboy western flair.

Closest Major City: Billings, Montana (141 miles) Closest Major Airport: Spokane International Airport (405 miles). Bozeman has a pretty large airport as well. Lodging Recommendations : If you’re looking for a 5-star lodge experience, check out The Gray Cliffs Ranch (Note: 30 miles west of Bozeman). The LARK hotel in downtown Bozeman is centrally located and embodies a Montana feel with a modern take. About 15 minutes west of Bozeman is the Gallatin River Lodge, which offers fly-fishing, a fantastic restaurant, and other activities. Recommended Restaurants : Cafe Fresco delights with a rich Italian menu and cozy atmosphere. Gallatin River Lodge for outstanding food harvested in the nearby area. Don’t Miss: Fly Fishing! Or, a hike to an 80-foot thunderous waterfall known as Palisade Falls.

#4 Port Orford, Oregon (10% of the vote)

Port Orford is so small, that if you blink, you might just pass right through town and not even realize it.  Regardless of its small stature, this southern Oregon coastal community has much to offer. Port Orford is one of those proverbial, “diamond in the rough” destinations. One does not typically expect such wonderful amenities from a smaller town, but this coastal community is not only worth a stop, it’s worth a stay. With a vibrant art scene hosting over a dozen galleries, a number of quality restaurants and some outstanding accommodations, Port Orford would make any discerning traveler feel comfortable.

The art galleries trend from the whimsical, to the ultra-modern. There are several lovely B&Bs in town, some offering individual romantic cabins in a tranquil setting coupled with rugged and ocean views. You will also find several tasty places to eat … from the high-end, to the eccentric. You won’t get bored either. Heads State Park is a great place for hiking and unobstructed ocean views, while Agate Beach offers a wonderfully long stretch of sandy beach … great for flying a kite, romantic strolls or lying out on a warm summer day.

Closest Major City : Medford, Oregon (193 miles) Closest Major Airport : Portland International Airport (274 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Redfish Loft. Restaurant Recommendations : RedFish and Crazy Norwegians. Don’t Miss : Heads State Park and Humbug Mt. State Park just south of Port Orford.

#3 South Lake Tahoe, California (12% of the vote)

South Lake Tahoe is a magnificent mountain town situated along the banks of a breathtaking body of water that has inspired artists and attracted aquatic and snow enthusiasts for generations. South Lake Tahoe straddles California and Nevada within the rugged Sierra Nevada range, which makes a road trip to this small city destination one filled with delight and amazement.

The area can accommodate anyone’s taste or style, from cool cottages, modern motels, boutique inns to sophisticated beachside resorts. No matter the season, outdoor enthusiasts will rejoice with the abundance of activities at their fingertips. Located within the village center is the Heavenly Gondola, taking skiers and sightseers up a mountain face that provides striking views for as far as the eye can see. Outdoor patios with live music emanating from the many bars and restaurants provide a lively atmosphere that draws visitors into its recreational cocoon.

Fantastic dining, entertainment, activities, an array of lodging choices and scenic drives make South Lake Tahoe one of the best small city road trip destinations in the country.

Closest Major City : Reno, Nevada (62 miles) Closest Major Airport : Reno International Airport (58 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Edgewood Resort offers uncompromising luxury accommodations. The Coachman is a hip modern motel/hotel near the Village. Restaurant Recommendations : Sage Room Steak House, Freshies, Azul Latin Kitchen, Cold Water Brewery & Grill, Driftwood Café (great breakfast place), Lake Tahoe Aleworx. Don’t Miss : Driving to Emerald Bay. Historic sights, hikes and stupendous views await along this scenic drive.

#2 Chattanooga, Tennessee (16% of the vote)

Chattanooga, like many historic towns across the country, has gone through a re-birth over the past couple of decades. The preface of Chattanooga’s revitalization can be attributed to the development of a world-class aquarium that spawned a downtown renaissance. What has followed is a thriving art scene, including gastronomy, lots of live music and annual events. There is also a cornucopia of outdoor activities, such as the flight park for hang gliding, rock climbing/bouldering, kayaking and mountain biking.

Just outside of town is Lookout Mountain where there are a number of major attractions, from Ruby Falls (a waterfall deep inside a mountain cave), Incline Railway (a thrilling 1-mile train ride up the mountain) to one of my favorite attractions in all of Chattanooga, Rock City. Resting at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and alongside the Tennessee River, Chattanooga is absolutely one of the best small city road trip destinations in the country.

Closest Major City : Atlanta, Georgia (118 miles) Closest Major Airport : Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (127 miles) Lodging Recommendations : The Dwell Hotel , The Read House Historical Inn & Suites. Restaurant Recommendations : Broad Street Grill for sophisticated dining, Public House for hip and upscale, and The Flying Squirrel for eclectic Southern comfort food. Don’t Miss : Rock City , an amazingly unique botanical garden. The Tennessee Aquarium, one of the best in the country.

#1 Walla Walla, Washington (18% of the vote)

And, the number one small city road trip destination for 2018 is Walla Walla, Washington. It’s so nice; they had to name it twice!

Walla Walla may have been known as a college town and farming community famous for its sweet onions, however it has fast become known for its quality soil to grow world-class grapes. Twenty years ago, Walla Walla had 20 wineries. Today, there are over 140! This explosion into the wine industry has attracted top-notch chefs who’ve opened many stellar restaurants. The growth has also spawned some outstanding lodging choices, from the completely renovated historic Marcus Whitman, to a slew of high quality inns and B&Bs.

When you approach Walla Walla for the first time, you will likely wonder if you’re in the right place as the land looks barren and unassuming. However, as you get closer, you’ll see the charm of rolling wheat fields, tree-lined streets with craftsman style homes and manicured vineyards. The downtown area is full of historic buildings and endearing people. As a matter of fact, back in 2011, Walla Walla was crowned “most friendly” small town in America by Rand McNally and USA Today.

Closest Major City : Spokane, Washington (153 miles) Closest Major Airport : Spokane International Airport (153 miles) Lodging Recommendations : Marcus Whitman is a stunning hotel right in town with a fantastic restaurant. Cameo Heights Mansion in a romantic boutique inn just outside of Walla Walla. They too have a great on-site restaurant. Restaurant Recommendations : The Marc (inside the Marcus Whitman), T Maccarone’s, Brasserie Four, Graze and the Maple Counter Cafe is a fantastic place for breakfast. Don’t Miss : Wine Tasting! Walla Walla is for wine lovers. Hot air balloon ride.

I’ve been to 5 of these towns and completely agree they are amazing. You’ve inspired me to visit the others.

Amber Johnson

Great list, I’ve only been to two of these destinations, so I have some work to do. Some amazing photos as well…who took them?

Larry Harding

I live in Walla Walla. I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere. Come see us!!

Lori

Not sure what you consider major but Chattanooga does have an airport in the city. Happy to see that city on your list.

Alice

Walla Walla also has a regional airport. Alaska Airlines allows mileage plan members to check a case of wine per person at no cost. Come visit Wlla Walla.

Gary Dirks

I grew up in Wally Wally! Wonderful high desert area with strawberry farms, sweet onions, hay fields and friendly people.

Bob Martin

Growing up in Walla Walla was certainly a great experience for a child. If you look toward the left part of the picture, the sign “Martin’s” marks the family owned and run jewelry store which has been in town since 1889.

Cate

Walla Walla has an airport, just not a major one. And you certainly do NOT have to drive WAY out of town to find exceptional lodging and dinning options. There is always something going on in Walla Walla, including in or outdoor theater, art, onions, 4th of July, wine events, sporting events, etc.

Carol Duvall

I agree that Walla Walla deserves the number 1 ranking.

Janie Millgard

In Walla Walla, along with great wine and food, we have amazing public art on every corner downtown and throughout the Whitman College campus. All are walking distance from the Marcus Whitman hotel.

Michele

We went to Walla Walla on a vacation in 2015 and left with a home! It IS a fantastic road trip, especially from Portland, OR where you are treated to a nearly 4-hour breathtaking view of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. This is a fantastic place for people of all ages: three world-class universities with a variety of adult learning/cultural enrichment opportunities, access to great medical facilities, and delicious, healthy organic produce and grass-fed beef to accompany all those grapes. Most people don’t know that Walla Walla has a cute airport with several Horizon flights daily to and from Seattle. If you can get to Seattle, you can get to the world, right? But once you see Walla Walla, you might not want to leave.

Susie Gravitt

The Cottages in the Clouds on Lookout Mountain, is another great place to stay while visiting Chattanooga!

Naina Rao

We visited Walla Walla in 2007 and bought a parcel of land. We are back after 11 years to the place that we love. We are building a boutique inn called The Barn B&B Walla Walla which will open in Spring 2019. Check out our website at bnbwallawalla.com We hope to welcome you to our beautiful small town.

TC

two points for including Bozeman, a great little side trip from Yellowstone and a nice town with plenty to see

Jim Gillard

I came to Walla Walla in the dead of the winter in 1971 & said how could anyone live in that toww. Came back in 1979,transfered here by my employer,39 years later, still here and retired. God’s country!!

wanda Harris

I just don’t understand how it got to be #1. I’m from around their, grew up in Milton_Freewater, Oregon. when I was growing up every thing was wonderul. but NOW, NO THANKS. yes its pretty but thats about it. my opinion thanks.

Dylan Wright

Cool. I saw only a small part of these cities. You made me think – can I rent a car and go on tour as in the good old days?

Kim Hedine

One thing this article missed is the shopping. Walla Walla’s downtown has some of the most unique locally owned stores. Mainly women owned businesss that are scattered in between wine and food. I am the owner of Midnight Oil Soap & Apothecary. Located in a historic building right on Main. We merchants, want to get the word out, to the visitors, that our beautiful downtown has amazing, Unique shopping as well!

Jake Mayer

Some great small city destinations listed here! Charlottesville and Eureka Springs are probably my two favorite.

Road trip USA: best small towns to visit in America

Table of Contents

2020: The Return of the Road Trip?

Arkansas – eureka springs, california – bishop, california – crescent city, california – ramona, minnesota – stillwater, nevada – carson valley, north carolina – new bern, tennessee – lynchburg, texas – marfa, washington – long beach, wyoming – jackson hole, plan your small town usa road trip.

This summer could mark the return of the Great American Road Trip as people cancel international travel plans in favor of sticking closer to home. So why not add a few of the best small towns in America to your road trip itinerary?

I’ve long been a believer that you don’t need to leave the good old USA to have an adventure. I’m excited that more people will have the chance to discover the small towns, public lands, and local food that makes America so unique. Plus, this is a great opportunity for us to support small businesses that have been hit especially hard over recent months.

So, I asked some fellow RV travelers and writers to share their favorite small towns across the country. Read on for a roundup of some of the best hidden vacation spots in the U.S. The list is in alphabetical order by state. If you enjoy small town charm like redwood trees… laid-back wineries… kite festivals… and themed fiberglass bears, you’ve come to the right place. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this post! I know how hard it is to choose just a single place to write about… I have favorite small towns scattered across the country, from Thomas, West Virginia to Yachats, Oregon .

One big caveat: please (!) don’t travel until the state and local communities you hope to visit have given the okay. Be sure to do your research before you hit the road. Click here for a link to see the “open” status of each state. If you’re traveling by RV, click here to check on COVID-19 related campground closures. If you dreaming of wide open spaces, check out these resources to help you #recreateresponsibly. Plan ahead so you (and the locals) can stay safe!

Eureka Springs, Arkansas, MakingMoneyandTraveling.com | Best Small Towns In America

  • Ashley Mann
  • Ashley Mann, the RV organization guru behind the website RVinspiration.com, is an Ozarks native and has returned to her hometown of Springfield, MO after three years living full-time in an RV.

I have traveled all over the world, and one of my favorite places on the planet is Eureka Springs, Arkansas .  Nestled in the scenic Ozark mountains, the town had its original heyday in the late 1800s when people would travel from all over the country to drink from its natural springs , which were believed to cure cancer.  To this day the downtown consists of restored Victorian “gingerbread” style homes and commercial buildings constructed from native limestone bricks.

The walkable main street zig-zags along the side of a wooded hill, and many of the historic homes and hotels are built right into the cliffs and have “ground floor” entrances on multiple levels.  There are nature trails, parks, and springs throughout the downtown, and a trolley runs a route along the main streets in case you get tired of walking. My personal favorite spots in the town include the Carnegie library (the most librariest of libraries you can imagine…I can smell the old books just thinking about it!) and Basin Spring Park (where many annual events and festivals are held).  You also can’t miss the breathtaking view from the roof of the historic (and reportedly haunted) Crescent Hotel .

Other popular attractions include the town’s original train depot , where you can ride a train pulled by a steam locomotive , the Great Passion Play (an outdoor dramatization of the Passion of Christ), the gorgeous Thorncrown Chapel ( a glass-walled chapel in the middle of the woods ), and too many delicious restaurants to name.  On top of all that Eureka Springs has to offer, it’s an easy drive away from numerous Ozarks hiking trails , scenic overlooks, and the Buffalo National River.

I would have to say my favorite small town to visit is in the United States is Bishop, California .  I love this town and the line of towns to the North like Mammoth, June Lake and especially Lee Vining where I lived when I was 4-7 years old.  Bishop has always been one of my favorite small towns.  It has enough great restaurants and shops to keep you interested.  It is home every year to Bishop Mule Days and it sits smack in the middle of Owens Valley with the high Sierra Mountains to the West and the high deserts of Nevada to the East.  Bishop is a gateway town to Yosemite and it sits basically at the base of Mount Whitney .  The Eastern Sierra Mountains are a backdrop each and every day to life in Bishop. My favorite thing about Bishop is without a doubt Erick Schat’s Bakkery .  Schat’s Bakkery is home to the original Sheepherder’s bread.  During the gold rush and still to this day the Eastern Sierras hold some of the best sheepherders in the world and the Basque culture brought Sheepherder’s bread to this area over a 100 years ago.  Schat’s offers up this bread along with about 20 other varieties and some amazing pastries and sandwiches.  The entire location makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. I try to get there as early as possible in the day, grab something warm, a cup of coffee and do a little people watching before heading out to main street for a stroll through the shops and then a hike in the mountains, maybe a little fly fishing before we head off to the hot springs .  There is a lot to love about Bishop.

Crescent City, California, Chickery's Travels | Best Small Towns In America

  • Chickery’s Travels
  • Julie and her husband, Sean, have been traveling full-time exploring the United States in their RV for over five years.

Crescent City, California is a quaint little town just minutes from the Oregon border. It is best known for its proximity to the world famous Redwood National and State Parks where you can marvel at the majestic trees growing over 350 feet in height. One of the best ways to view them is a drive along the spectacular Howland Hill Road This 10-mile winding dirt road takes you directly through the heart of old-growth redwoods in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park . There are opportunities along the drive to park and embark on a hike at several trailheads.

The famous redwood trees aren’t the only attraction in Crescent City. It is also home to Battery Point Lighthouse , a registered California Historical Landmark situated on a tiny island that you can walk out to during low tide. Afterwards, head over to the harbor and enjoy some fresh seafood at Crescent Seafood while watching the sea lions bask in the sun.

Editor’s Note: Crescent City is a great stop after cruising down the Oregon Coast. Be sure to make time to see the Redwoods!

Ramona, California, @thetasteforadventure | Best Small Towns In America

  • Jesse and Rachael Lyons from @thetasteforadventure
  • We travel full-time in our fifth wheel RV, searching for the best food & beer as we go!

California is well-known for fantastic wineries, but our favorite wine town is the very underrated Ramona, CA . Less than an hour from downtown San Diego, these small vineyards scattered through rocky mountains provide intimate tastings of high quality wine at a fraction of the price .  Ramona is a small country town. Dusty golden sunlight shines on the grape leaves and outdoor tasting rooms. The sommelier wears jeans, often harvested the grapes with their own hands, and is happy to tell you all about it. Tasting pours are heavy, and don’t be surprised if your server joins you at your table as the wine flows and the afternoon wears on. We’ve been to plenty of smaller wineries across the country. Honestly, most of them aren’t good, but Ramona’s deep earthy red wines are phenomenal. The town is home to almost 40 wineries and our definite favorite is Chuparosa Vineyards . For RVers with a Harvest Hosts membership, both Hatfield Creek and Vineyard Grant James offer delicious wine and gorgeous sites nestled among the vines. Pick up a picnic lunch at Ramona Family Naturals Market to bring along to your tastings. RVers will also enjoy the scenic county park, Dos Picos . Be aware that it fills up with local families on weekends, though tranquil during the week. Nearby Mt. Woodson Trail is a popular hike that includes a stop at the famed “Potato Chip Rock.” Don’t miss popping over to nearby Julian , another adorable California town that boasts a famous pie shop .

Stillwater, Minnesota, Global Game Plan | Best Small Towns In America

  • Jenny from Global Game Plan
  • Jenny is the Founder of Global Game Plan, a travel planning business that provides customized itineraries to worldwide destinations and travel planning research to answer your travel-related questions.

The city of Stillwater , also known as the Historic Birthplace of Minnesota , is the perfect destination for a charming small-town USA experience. Conveniently located less than 30 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul, it’s easy to take a day trip or spend the weekend at one of these Airbnbs as a solo traveler, couple or with friends or family. Fill your days exploring antique shops on Main Street, riding bikes or hiking the nearby trails, or attending a local festival with a beautiful view of the famous lift bridge on the St. Croix River.

Recommended places to eat and drink: Morning coffee at Made , breakfast at the Lowell Inn , lunch at Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop or Nacho Mama’s , an afternoon snack from Candyland , dinner at the Dock Café and a drink at the Tilted Tiki or Velveteen Speakeasy . Check out the stellar Discover Stillwater website and social media pages to see everything this special place has to offer.

Carson Valley, Nevada, The Wandering Road | Best Small Towns In America

  • Sarah at The Wandering Road (I couldn’t resist adding my two cents to this post!)
  • Traveling the country by RV to discover good times and delicious food, off the beaten path while sharing practical tips and itineraries to help you plan your next road trip adventure.

If you think of Nevada as simply a state you drive through on your way to somewhere else, you’re missing out. Northern Nevada’s Carson Valley is something special. The valley is home to several under-the-radar small towns that are just a short drive from the very famous Lake Tahoe but feel like another world.

Genoa is the oldest town in Nevada and home of the state’s first bar, which is still in operation: the Genoa Bar and Saloon aka “The Oldest Thirst Parlor” . Check out Mormon Station Historic Park to learn about the state’s first emigrant settlers and the town’s route on the Pony Express or hike up, up, up to a waterfall . After working up an appetite, I highly recommend grabbing sandwiches from the Pink House , one of the oldest buildings in Nevada.

The nearby twin towns of Gardnerville and Minden are connected by Highway 395. With the striking Sierra Nevada mountains towering in the distance, get a latte at DST Coffee and take a walk through their historic downtowns or grab a bite to eat at local restaurants like Overland (where you will find some of the best burgers around) or tour Bently Heritage , one of the few estate distilleries in the U.S. You can also try an authentic Basque meal (but be forewarned: come hungry). This whole area is an outdoors paradise, with plenty of hiking, mountain biking, and skiing options to keep you busy. Head north to Washoe State Park to see some of the Silver State’s famous wild horses.

Editor’s Note: Here are some more destinations for your Nevada road trip bucket list.

New Bern, North Carolina, The Planking Traveler | Best Small Towns In America

  • The Planking Traveler
  • Emily Adams is a NC-based travel consultant and outdoor enthusiast who provides guidance on budgeting, off the beaten path travel guides and ways to incorporate enjoyable movement into your travels.

New Bern, North Carolina is a charming, historic city located near the coast, right on the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers. It was founded in 1710 by a Swiss gentleman who named it after Bern, Switzerland. Like Bern, New Bern’s symbol is the bear, and in 2010, the city placed over 50 decorated fiberglass bears around town. It is a fun adventure to walk the city trying to locate them all – we were able to find 33 bears when we were there last. You can also learn a lot about the city’s history by visiting the beautiful Tryon Palace and taking a tour there. The Aerie B&B is a wonderful place to spend the night and we enjoyed celebrating NYE there with excellent food and free wine each evening.

Fun fact about New Bern – author Nicholas Sparks resides here, and many of his novels involve settings in and around this captivating area of North Carolina. If you love horses, be sure to check out Cedar Island Stables about 30 minutes away, where you can ride horses on the beach and into the sound. Though a lot of the downtown area is easily walkable to access plenty of good restaurants and places to have a drink, I’d definitely recommend taking a trolley tour to see the rest of what the city has to offer and learn about the historic residences in the area.

Lynchburg, Tennessee, RV Tailgate Life | Best Small Towns In America

  • Kimberly from RV Tailgate Life
  • Based in Atlanta, GA, this part-time RVer travels around the southeast and the country in search of all things sports, concerts, and tailgating with an extra emphasis on beer, whiskey, and wine or other fun adventures.

Lynchburg, Tennessee is an awesome small town in Tennessee. Mostly recognized as the home of Jack Daniels Distillery , this town features a central square with restaurants and shops including the smallest Harley Davidson store.

As a feature for RV travelers, there is a city park just behind the city square with RV parking with power and water hookups (no sewer, though). Everything is within walking distance, so the lack of Uber or Lyft won’t be a problem even if you are not towing a car behind your motor home. Fun Fact: Lynchburg is in a dry-county, so the restaurants won’t serve you alcohol. But you can buy it straight from the distillery .

Marfa, Texas, @wandering.america | Best Small Towns In America

  • Jesse & Lindsey of @wandering.america
  • Two former San Franciscans who traded it all in to live and work full-time in an Airstream while traveling the country, exploring and eating along the way, with their tiny dog in tow.

This funky, artsy, quirky teeny tiny town is the perfect reprieve after a long desolate drive thru West Texas. Marfa is basically a mini arts and cultural hub plopped right down in the middle of the high desert, surrounded by vastness and a few ranches and it’s totally worth the 6 hour drive from Austin.

You can bring your own Airstream (or rent one!) at the Marfa Yacht Club . Walk around and check out the vintage shops which rival some of the best in LA, SF and NYC. My personal faves are RABA MARFA and Esperanza . And keeping with the Airstream theme – be sure to check out @slowpokemarfa – a hand-poked tattoo shop located in a renovated Airstream Trailer.

For a more highbrow cultural experience, you have to check out Chinati . It’s Marfa’s pièce de résistance: a contemporary art museum based upon the idea that art and the surrounding land are inextricably linked. And for a more mystical experience, make time to soak in the “Marfa Lights” … ask the locals for the best viewing tips and what they think they are. Lastly, book a night at the “ Star Party” at the nearby McDonald Observatory . To this day, it’s been one of the best stargazing experiences of my life.

Pro Tip: Come on or near the weekend vs mid week, if you can’t stay a full week that is. The few shops, restaurants and things to do in town are usually closed early/mid week, even during peak tourist season ;). On the way out of town be sure to get a pic in front of the famous Marfa Prada and last but not least, be sure to check out the Amazon Video series “”I Love Dick”” with Kevin Bacon . It’ll wrap up your feelings about Marfa in a nice little bow, or leave you feeling even more confused. Either way, Marfa is known for being hard to get to, and even harder to explain. If you get the chance, go and see her for yourself.

Editor’s Note: The Chateau also stopped for a photo op in front of Prada Marfa . However, we did not see the Marfa Lights – maybe next time? Love those quirky far west Texas vibes.

Long Beach, Washington, Supersize Life | Best Small Towns In America

  • Debbie at Supersize Life
  • After living in Alaska almost 25 years, working mostly in non-profit organizations, Debbie left in 2017 to embark on a full-time RV life filled with travel, adventure, experience and writing. She blogs about the RV life, RV maintenance and her adventures.

In 2 1/2 years as a full-time RV traveler, I’ve been to a lot of places. I gravitate to small towns, quirky museums and self-guided walks. Of all the small towns I’ve visited so far, Long Beach, Washington has been a favorite. Long Beach is one of six communities on the small Long Beach Peninsula but the only “resort” town. Long Beach is in the southwest corner of the state and only a long bridge ride away from Astoria, Oregon.

I visited in November, so missed the Long Beach Razor Clam Festival held every April and the International Kite Festival held every August. The Kite Festival is so popular, it brings 100,000 visitors to the little town of 1,500 residents.

If you are looking for a good meal, visit The Depot , located in the historic train depot. My sister joined me and declared their clam chowder to be the best she’d had. Ever. If you visit between mid-October and mid-June, be sure to go on a Wednesday night (you’ll need reservations) for their more casual Burger Night Menu . If you are in the mood for something sweet, you must stop in at The Candy Man, A Sweet Shoppe .

But the best part of my visit to Long Beach was the many adventure walks the area offered. You can walk on the self-described World’s Longest Beach . Or, stroll the half-mile boardwalk if you’d rather not get sand in your shoes. There’s nearby Willapa National Wildlife Refuge where the Willapa Art Walk and Cutthroat Climb are filled with art along your 1.0 hikingloop adventure. I loved them all. But my favorite walk has to be the self-guided tour of historic Oysterville (established 1854), on the far end of the peninsula.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Free As Wheel Ever Be | Best Small Towns In America

  • Tina from Free As Wheel Ever Be
  • Tina is an entrepreneur who lives, works and travels full-time in her RV with her husband and 2 cats. She inspires, educates and coaches her community on intentional living, budget travel and RV life.

I always knew I wanted to visit Jackson Hole but never really knew why… except all the celebrities go there so why shouldn’t I? Well, because it’s expensive – or so I thought! We spent 3 days in Jackson Hole in July camping at Gros Ventre Campground – huge cost savings. The minute we left I couldn’t wait to go back.

Jackson Hole is one of those towns that fills your soul for so many reasons. The breathtaking scenery of Grand Teton National Park mesmerizes you while walking the streets of this quaint western town – complete with horse drawn carriages and saloons. Tip: Take an aerial tram from Teton Village to the top of Rendezvous Peak for a waffle and some spiked coffee or hot chocolate at Corbet’s Cabin . From 10,450 feet you get an amazing view of Jackson Hole and the surrounding area. From there we hiked down a couple miles to the gondola for our return trip to the village. I would highly recommend the hike because the views go on for days!

If you are a foodie you will love this town and so will your budget IF you plan accordingly. I am a pizza connoisseur who loved Pinky G’s ! Tip: There will be a line so keep an eye out for a place at the bar. Then order a slice and a brew and your pocket book will thank you! Another inexpensive delicious option is Noodle Kitchen . If you sit at the bar they have exclusive happy hour specials offering half off hand-crafted cocktails and heavy discounts o certain menu items. Our favorite brewery was Snake River and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar can not be missed (but only if you sit at the bar on the saddles)! So fun! Jackson Hole checks all our boxes – a town with amazing views, foods and brews!

Editor’s Note: We loved Gros Ventre campground, too! And if you are looking for boondocking near the park, check out Spread Creek .

A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to this list of the best small towns in America! While everyone has a different choice for “best,” we can all agree that these are some of the coolest small towns in the USA (and some of the best hidden vacation spots, too). I know I’ve added a few more stops to my U.S. travel bucket list after reading all these great ideas. I hope this roundup helps inspire your next road trip. One of the great things about this big country of ours (and something I have learned first hand while traveling full-time ) is that there are always new places to explore. Did we leave off your favorite small town? Leave a note in the comments or let me know on Instagram .

There are many ways to do a cross-country road trip in the USA, but these two itineraries will take you through some truly iconic American places.

1. Chicago to Los Angeles: A Whiskey Road Trip on Route 66

It doesn’t get more American than a 2,000-mile drive along the entirety of Route 66. There are endless ways to take this legendary trip (including an EV version —but to take your cross-country road trip to the next level, we recommend exploring another American pastime: whiskey.

Starting in Chicago and ending in L.A., you’ll stop by some of the leading craft distilleries in the United States, like Few Spirits in Chicago, Still 630 in St. Louis, and Red Fork Distillery in Tulsa. In between tastings, make time for detours to natural attractions, like the Grand Canyon, and quirky roadside curiosities, like Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. Traveling Route 1, affectionately known as “the lobster trail,” along Maine’s jagged coastline is an exercise in indulgence. Sample lobster dishes in all forms—buttered, steamed, on a roll, or even in a decadent mac-and-cheese.

The trip starts in the quaint small town of Ogunquit , with its rare (for the area) 3.5 miles of white-sand beach. Make your first lobster of the journey count, steamed with a side of drawn butter at Barnacle Billy’s in picturesque Perkins Cove harbor. Stop at Big Daddy’s for a cone on your way to the shipbuilding center—and summer home of George H. W. Bush—Kennebunkport. Stay at the recently redesigned 150-year-old classic White Barn Inn , and consider a sailing trip for an afternoon. With lobsters cooked in ocean water, the legendary lobster roll at the Clam Shack is a must.

North Carolina’s Piedmont region extends from the coastal plain to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and includes farmland and rolling wooded hills, especially on the 1-40 stretch near Hillsborough. Starting in Raleigh, drive the short distances to Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte to see how these cities are innovating through art, food, and a celebration of the past. 20. Scenic Highway 30A: A Sunday Drive Through South Walton, Florida

Florida is full of places to cruise with the top down, but it’s hard to beat a Sunday (or any day) drive along Scenic Highway 30A through northwest Florida, home to a postcard-perfect stretch of seaside towns known as South Walton.

The roughly 28-mile route through South Walton County kisses the coast for nearly all its length, taking you through gorgeous residential Gulf-front communities like Rosemary Beach, Grayton Beach, and Blue Mountain Beach . Roll down the windows and let the emerald-hued views in.

Pull over to explore, too—maybe to admire the New Urbanism architecture in Alys Beach or to swim in the clear waters at Grayton Beach State Park . (The beach here has been lauded among the best in the world.)

21. The Florida Keys: An Island-Hopping Getaway

For a sunny road trip itinerary in Florida, skip Miami and head farther south. Beginning in Key Largo and ending in Key West, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway is often overlooked for more well-known routes up north, but it is well worth going out of your way to experience.

As the name suggests, this route is very scenic, so plan to spend at least a few days exploring it and numerous stops along the way. Some highlights include driving across the impressive Overseas Highway, stopping to admire art in the town of Islamorada, and enjoying the historic sites, food, and (of course) beaches in the city of Key West.

22. Memphis to Bristol, Tennessee: A Music-Driven Adventure

If you have about a week to spare and a deep appreciation for music, take a road trip from one side of Tennessee to the other, starting in Memphis and ending in Bristol. The eastbound trip spans genres, including rock ( Graceland ), blues ( Beale Street) and, of course, country (did you really go to Tennessee if you didn’t go to Dollywood ?). Nashville serves as the halfway point on your journey—so consider penciling in an extra 48 hours to fully explore the state capital’s greatest hits.

23. Arecibo to Condado, Puerto Rico: A Lesser-Known Side of a Well-Loved Island

In the minds of many, trips to Puerto Rico bring images of stunning beaches , delicious foods , and maybe a bioluminescent bay or two . But there’s plenty of history to be found here, too, as Puerto Rico was home to an Indigenous population known as the Taino, a heritage many Puerto Ricans embrace. That history can be explored via a road trip. Starting in the northern town of Arecibo, travel south to Ponce, then back north to Condado—along the way you’ll encounter petroglyphs, Indigenous sites, and breathtaking natural spots.

7 Amazing Texas Small Towns for Your Road Trip Itinerary

' data-src=

Texas is home to some seriously stunning natural wonders and a myriad of cities, but there’s a whole lot more to uncover in the Lone Star State.

Even though Houston or Dallas may be the first destinations that come to mind when you think of Texas, the entire state is sprinkled with amazing small towns and villages that are worth considering in your itinerary, especially if you’re the type of traveler who prefers exploring lesser-frequented spots.

In this post, we share a few of the best places in Texas to visit that aren’t large cities, including towns with under a hundred residents to ghost villages standing in the middle of the desert so you can take your pick and explore the Lone Star State in a super unique way!

7 Amazing Destinations In Texas (That Aren’t Big Cities)

USA Texas Small Towns Map

1.  Fredericksburg

Set in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is the ideal destination to base yourself in to explore the best this alluring area of the state has to offer.

Fredericksburg’s German heritage can be seen in every step you take across this quaint town. During your visit, you’ll get to feel as though you traveled across the Atlantic by exploring its top-notch wine culture, going in search of breweries, or spending a day under the sun at an authentic beer garden!

Fredericksburg is also the starting point for one of the prettiest scenic drives in Texas , the Willow City Loop. Particularly during bluebonnet season, you won’t want to miss this incredible drive from your small-town Texas road trip itinerary!

2. Round Top

Home to just under a hundred residents, Round Top is a tiny village in Texas you may overlook if you don’t know about it!

Despite its super small size, Round Top is home to a fabulous art scene, an amazing culinary scene, and a super unique antique show that actually put it on the map. Moreover, the town loves hosting festivals, including the Shakespeare at Windedale Festival .

Thanks to its location right between Houston and Austin, Round Top is a great pit stop to make if you’re driving from one city to another or on your way Houston to Big Bend National Park . Make sure you check out Royers Café, a classic coffee shop famed for its scrumptious pies!

3. Rockport

Rockport is everything you could as for in a seaside escape, especially if you’re the type of traveler who likes to combine beach fun with cultural happenings.

This quirky coastal town in southern Texas is perfect for a beach vacay, with activities like swimming, boating, fishing, waterskiing, and more being a part of its menu. If you’re into seafood, you’ll find yourself in heaven here.

For a bit more adventure, you can head over to the nearby Goose Island State Park , where you can spend a day hiking under the shade of the largest oak trees in the country.

For a cultural break, you can stroll through the town’s historic center, which is lined by historic buildings, museums, and local art galleries. A can’t miss stop during your visit is the Fulton Mansion as well as the Hoopes-Smith House!

Festivals are also a thing here, so make sure you check Rockport’s calendar to see if there’s anything happening during your visit. The Wine Festival and the Oysterfest are simply amazing!

4. Terlingua

Located on the Mexican border, Terlingua is a ghost town that was abandoned after mining operations ceased and its population left.

Today, Terlingua is an amazing place to explore. Boasting incredible panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains, this ghost town is as quirky as its gets, especially when it comes to its desert-inspired architecture and art all over.

If you love nature, you’ll also be able to explore the town’s surroundings by kayaking the Rio Grande River or going on a hike around the mountains.

5. Grapevine

Sitting north of Dallas and Fort Worth, Grapevine is an amazing place to visit if a little bit of everything is what you’re after, including activities out in nature, a spectacular wine culture, museums galore, and spas to relax your muscles in.

Grapevine’s perfectly preserved Historic Main Street is as Instagrammable as it can get. You can easily spend your entire visit strolling through it, especially when you consider it’s dotted with locally-owned restaurants, wine tasting rooms, several art galleries, and lots of boutique shops.

6. Boerne

Nature, art, and wine – that’s Boerne in a nutshell.

This Texas small town sits right in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and provides the perfect opportunity to explore some of the best nature centers and state parks in the state.

Moreover, it’s also a haven for wine and beer tasting, with tons of vineyards, breweries, and distilleries dotting its streets.

For some serious eye candy, make sure you dedicate several hours to strolling Boerne’s historic district – Hill Country Mile – where you’ll find gorgeous buildings, eclectic eateries, tons of local art galleries, and antique shops, as well as cozy cafés to spend a few hours in!

7. Marfa

You’ve probably seen Marfa’s Prada Marfa pop-up store on Instagram and Pinterest a thousand times already. Yep – even though it looks almost like a painting (because who would expect to find a Prada store in the middle of nowhere?!), it actually exists and it’s just one of the many quirky pop-up projects in this incredibly artsy town.

USA Texas Small Towns - Marfa Presidio County Courthouse

If you’re into minimalist art, Marfa is bound to please your creative eye. A can’t miss sight during your visit is the Chinati Foundation, which is home to amazing (and somewhat whacky) pieces.

Another sight you can’t miss is the Presidio County Courthouse, a building that dates back to the 19th century and is famed for its pink facade!

Editorial Reviews

Every time I travel to Wisconsin, I am immediately reminded of what always brings me back -- it's the small towns, the communities and the people who have managed to stay true to themselves and to the promise of the land. Mary Bergin's Small Town Wisconsin is full of surprising discoveries, a great road map to these towns, hamlets and villages -- but most important a way to embrace culture, community and conversation.

Growing up in Madison as the daughter of an educational book salesman who loved exploring the Badger State’s backroads and byways, I had an early appreciation for its small-town charms. Mary Bergin’s engaging tome has reignited that wanderlust, and I’m looking forward to a homecoming with her guide as fresh inspiration.

In this most interesting travel-oriented book, author Mary Bergin takes the reader to places in Wisconsin that are often overlooked. The little towns scattered across the state each with something special, from places like Belgium in southeastern Wisconsin and Spring Green in the southwest, to Bayfield in the northwest and Egg Harbor in the northeast—a total of 50 places to visit and enjoy. She writes, “Consider this a selective look at places to visit for an hour or two, during a specific time of the year, an overnight stay, or a full-blown vacation.” Small Town Wisconsin is a traveler’s guidebook and much more, as it contains a treasure-trove of fascinating details about these little Wisconsin places.

Beyond Moscow: Notes from Small-Town Russia

Article By: Erin Ramsey , Semi Finalist

small town road trips

When Americans think of Russia, it is usually a very limited picture: cold weather, the Kremlin, the Bolshoi ballet. In fact, most of our understanding of Russian culture is based around the capital city of Moscow, and we very rarely consider the multitudes of people and cultures that exist outside of that cosmopolitan center. When I traveled to the city of Kirov as a student with the NSLI-Y program, I discovered that the less-recognized cities of Russia are not only full of life and culture, but also often more friendly and accessible than massive Moscow. Kirov, a mid-sized city about 500 miles from the capital, is a perfect example of the value of lesser-known areas. As an exchange student, I was lucky to be hosted by a fantastic Russian family, which allowed me to get the know the city as more than just a tourist. A favorite spot for both families and teens was Theater Square, home to the city’s theater as well as a large fountain and park space. My peers and I also loved Kirov Park, which hosts both the city’s circus and a massive Ferris wheel. Kirov also features a cat cafe, complete with delicious tea and lots of cuddly cats. Kirov is a wonderful place to explore Russian food culture; it is renowned for its delicious ice cream due to the large dairy plant in the center of town, and is also the home of Doner, a popular fast-food chain serving roasted-meat sandwiches. The city even has its own ice cream museum, known as Artico! You might think that a smaller city like Kirov would be difficult for foreigners to navigate. However, my experience was just the opposite: almost everyone I met was excited to see an American in their town. Kirov is home to the Vyatka Humanitarian Gymnasium, a high school focusing specifically on foreign languages and humanities, and many of the students enjoyed helping my peers and I practice our Russian language skills while they worked on their English. This was another benefit of staying in a smaller town – Russian language and culture was far more accessible than in a larger city. Additionally, since Kirov is not accustomed to heavy tourism, there were few cheap trinket stores or tourist traps. Instead, I got to discover genuine traditional arts. One of my favorite experiences was at the Large Matryoshka Factory of Kirov, where classic Russian nesting dolls are carved and painted by hand. On a guided tour of the museum, we were able to see the dolls being carved, as well as paint our own mini-matryoshka! Visiting Kirov also highlighted for me the similarities between Russian life and my own American experiences. While I had expected Moscow to be somewhat similar to other large, cosmopolitan cities, it was a surprise to see how much my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky had in common with Kirov. My Russian family and I went shopping at the local mall after school, saw a Marvel movie together, and ate ice cream to cool off on hot summer days. Despite the differences in language and cultural background, my Russian counterparts lived very similar lives to my own. Getting to experience life in an everyday town helped me to connect on a deeper level with the Russian people and culture, and I would encourage anyone visiting Russia to consider the value of a town like Kirov. Russia is like nesting doll: although you might be impressed by the elaborate exterior of cities like Moscow, even more is to be found when you make the effort to go deeper within.
