Joji Announces ‘Smithereens’ Tour
- June 12, 2022
- Ryan Shepard
Joji has confirmed his return with the announcement of the upcoming Simthereens Tour. Beginning on July 1, 2022 at the Frost Amphitheater in Palo Alto, California , Joji will stop in sixteen cities before ending things at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, Georgia . Along the way, the multi-hyphenate creative will perform in Seattle, Denver, Dallas, Charlotte and Washington, D.C. among other cities. Capping it all off, Joji is also set to perform at Day N’ Vegas during Labor Day Weekend.
In addition to announcing a tour, Joji has also shared his first single since Nectar dropped in September of 2020. The understated piano ballad highlights his vocal range and poetic songwriting.
“She’d take the world off my shoulders/If it was ever hard to move/She’d turn the rain to a rainbow,” he sings on the Connor McDonough-produced track, “ Glimpse of Us .”
“When I was living in the blue/Why then, if she’s so perfect/Do I still wish that it was you?/Perfect don’t mean that it’s workin’/So what can I do?”
“Glimpse of Us” coupled with the announcement of a tour should set the stage of his next LP. However, there is still no word as to when that may drop. For now, check out Joji’s upcoming tour dates.

Joji Lights Up the Kia Forum on ‘Smithereens Oblivion’ Tour
Photo Credit: Timothy Norris / Kia Forum
On the Smithereens Oblivion tour, Joji performed at the famed Kia Forum on a gloomy, foggy Saturday night, perfectly suited to his musical style. In spite of the large venue, the singer managed to create an intimate and unique concert experience for fans through his performances, his witty personality, and his band.
Joji is a shapeshifting entertainer, previously known as Pink Guy and Filthy Frank and now he’s also adopted a DJ persona, Yebi Labs. Joji has attracted a wide range of fans throughout the years, and his openers offered concertgoers a wide range of music.Kicking off the show was Savagerealm, who performed a mixture of both slow and upbeat songs. During his performances, he did plenty of crowd work, encouraging attendees to participate in singing along and get “turnt up” together. Second up was Lil Toe (Ammo), who performed intense, raunchy, high energy rap songs which greatly contrasted the main event of the night. The last opener was fellow Japanese singer, Rei Brown, who sang chill pop tracks as he danced across the stage. His set featured unreleased music, as well as songs such as “Thinking Bout You,” which originally features the headliner.
Almost two hours after the show’s start time, it was finally the main act of the evening’s turn. The lights dimmed, the cheers of the audience grew loud enough to shake the venue, and the live band began to play as Joji walked onstage, wearing a Lakers hat and loudly shouting “Los Angeles!”
Diving right into it, the singer’s first song was “Sanctuary,” which set the tone of creating a safe space for attendees to enjoy the music and atmosphere of the show. He performed hit song after hit song, including “Daylight,” “Attention,” and “Ew.” Joji paused for a quick “pee” break, and Yebi Labs (Joji’s DJ persona) took the stage. The EDM set featured remixes of a variety of songs, including Joji’s own “Test Drive,” “Tick Tock,” and “Glimpse of Us,” and it ended once Joji’s “bathroom break” was finished. The singer then blew through songs such as “Pretty Boy,” “Plastic Taste,” and “Gimme Love,” before leaving the stage as his first faux ending. He returned for an acoustic and regular version of “Slow Dancing in the Dark,” exited yet again for his second faux ending, and came back for the real finale with “Glimpse of Us.”
With so many of his most popular tracks on the setlist, it would’ve been easy to satisfy fans without putting in any extra effort, yet Joji did the exact opposite. The show featured a few onstage mini games, one-liners before every single song to give fans clues of what was to come, and a lot of witty commentary and banter between the singer and opening act Savagerealm, who also served as the evening’s DJ. Joji introduced each member of his live band early on, giving fans a look into how close their bond is and throwing in small comments of how his pianist was “definitely not on drugs” and how Savagerealm “had his Instagram page deleted for posting a photo of CBD.” The night’s DJ even had a big red button next to his soundboard, prepared in case Joji misbehaved and he needed to stop the production. In fact, the DJ did end up using said big red button after Joji insisted Savagerealm get “milked” on stage. Some of the preparations for the night included the “75th Annual Jack Off,” which was a battle of Jack Sparrow impersonators, a game of BlackJack betting “nut bucks,” and the use of “heaven weaponry” to shoot shirts into the crowd.
In a night full of diverse music, funny antics, and fan service, the most memorable moment was without a doubt the final song, “Glimpse of Us.” As Joji returned for the second encore, he mentioned that this was “one last song that he forgot to perform,” and the excitement from the crowd was palpable. Fans reacted in various ways from jumping and screaming to groups swaying along with their arms around each other’s shoulders, reveling in the moment together. Singing the melancholic song, the crowd accompanied Joji, belting the lyrics at the top of their lungs which was enough to elicit goosebumps. All the voices echoed throughout the venue, embodying a true “I made it moment” for Joji, especially in the historic Kia Forum.
Joji gave attendees a one-of-a-kind experience, putting his smooth vocals and quirky persona front and center at the concert. With such a unique story his rise to fame, the show perfectly embodied who Joji is, and exactly why people love him.

Event details.
Over the course of his career, Joji has become one of the industry’s most enthralling and enigmatic artists, with over 16 billion combined streams to date. Following on the heels of RIAA Platinum-certified single "Glimpse of Us," which broke several records, his new album SMITHEREENS expands on the melancholic yet powerful emotions of the breakout hit. Of the album, Billboard raved, "Anyone familiar with Joji's dulcet tones and emotionally revealing lyricism could have predicted that he'd become a solo star." SMITHEREENS follows his album Nectar, executive produced and arranged by Joji, which bowed out at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Joji’s recently announced shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City and The Kia Forum in Los Angeles SOLD-OUT entirely during pre-sale less than a week after they were announced.

Joji announces “PANDEMONIUM” North American tour with Kenny Beats
The run of dates arrives alongside “speed dating over 60”-themed video with a gory twist..
Joji has worn many hats since his first brush with fame, but the current mantle of off-kilter R&B superstar seems to be suiting him quite nicely. The "SMITHEREENS" tour ended not too long ago, and now it's time for "PANDEMONIUM." This time, the announcement isn't accompanied by a new single; instead, Joji dropped a video to announce this run of North American dates. I won't spoil too much, but suffice to say it involves an elderly speed dating event that takes a gory turn. The "PANDEMONIUM" tour features special guests Kenny Beats , Lil Toe, and SAVAGEREALM. It begins September 29 in Houston's Toyota Center and crisscrosses the continent a few times before ending in Orlando, FL on November 8. Check out the teaser and the rest of the dates below.

Review: ‘Smithereens’ is an interlude between Joji albums
By Renly Liu 11/15/22 11:31pm
Coming off of his previous hit albums, Joji’s “Smithereens” felt like a half-cooked and overhyped EP rather than a sequel album to rival his previous release.
The album’s opener, “Glimpse of Us,” is a strong melodic opening and sets the album’s theme of missing an ex. The rich instrumentals and cutting lyrics work to create a telling story: the idea of a perfect ex-lover.
The rest of the first disc carries on with this theme, with “Die For You” mentioning extreme sacrifices for this past partner complemented nicely with a moody atmospheric instrumental. This is one of the few tracks that felt like it had actual effort and production put in. Although most of us wouldn’t die for our exes, many of the lyrics are resonant. Whether it’s your wallpaper, photo gallery or Instagram album, “burning photos” is something we’ve all been through. And for those polite breakups for incompatible relationships, the chorus of hearing “you’re happy without me, and I hope it’s true” is initially hard to stomach but accurate for those wishing well for their previous partner.
However, the other songs in the disc end up feeling like filler. Tracks such as “Feeling Like The End” and “Before The Day Is Over” have some fresh instrumental backing and lyrical ideas but eventually fall flat and fade out. One of the greatest offenders is “Dissolve,” which only offers uninteresting instrumentals and grating autotune vocals. The thought of “are we counting sheep until we dissolve?” provides some engaging imagery of relatable sleepless nights, but these three tracks need to be fleshed out significantly before they stop feeling like they were only meant to fill time in the album.
This trend continues in the second disc with “NIGHT RIDER,” which is about Joji trying to explore and find adventure and failing to convince his partner to come with, leaving him “too precious” to be hurt again and instead waiting for his previous partner. This is also the only song with Joji as the sole producer. However, production feels dry, again, much like the rest of the album.
Offsetting all the filler is “YUKON (INTERLUDE),” a highlight of a track supporting Joji in his aimless driving and excessive emotions. This song is reminiscent of many post-breakup escapism scenes, where it doesn’t really matter what you’re doing or where you’re going as long as your mind is focused on something mundane. For Joji, that might mean driving anywhere else or doing “circles at the Chevron” in his GMC Yukon.
Closing off the disc and album is “1AM FREESTYLE,” in which a dissonant, slightly out-of-tune piano backs up Joji’s vocals as he convinces his partner she’ll be alone without him. Interestingly, this freestyle song is one of a few in the album that Joji did not contribute to in writing or production. The instrumental pause is a really sweet moment and proves that Joji’s musicality is alive and well, before leaving listeners with a somber “I don’t wanna be alone.”
Many of the songs have unmemorable melodies (if there even is one), like “Dissolve” or “Night Rider,” and they end with underwhelming production. Even after listening to the album many times, I still could not hum the melody in these tracks.
With under 20 minutes of new song content, “Smithereens” has many lazy and inoffensive filler tracks in between some well-written music. As such, this album feels less diverse and robust than Joji’s older albums.
Perhaps taking after Joji’s love life, “Smithereens” is short and a little messy. With his next release, Joji can hopefully find his footing and get it just right.

Review: Joji’s SMITHEREENS Tour
May has been a busy month of music for me. A week after I went to the Shabang Music Festival, a friend and I drove to Los Angeles to see Joji’s SMITHEREENS tour . Joji is a Japanese singer-songwriter, rapper, former comedian, and YouTuber. His music is described as a mix between R&B and lo-fi. He performed at The Forum on May 13 for a sold-out audience, an impressive feat for a venue of that size. Follow along as I take you through the concert experience.
There were three artists to warm up the audience before Joji: Ammo, Lil Toe , and Rei Brown . Ammo and Lil Toe gave off similar trap vibes, but both were phallic. One of Lil Toe’s songs kept repeating, “What the f*ck do you mean, you don’t want to suck my nuts?” The audience yelled the lyrics back, but I wish the vocals were less on the nose. I want to read a Genius page and learn something new because the song has a deeper meaning. Although not memorable, Ammo had less vulgar lyrics when it was time for his set. However, I was shocked to see him hump the stage for 30 seconds before returning to rapping.
Last but certainly not least was Rei Brown. His set was enjoyable, and his dancing was subtle but impressive. He had terrific visuals on a screen behind him, mostly depicting images of space and galaxies. It was mesmerizing to look at and fit well with his song “ Solar .” He had a great stage presence, and people knew some of his songs, unlike Ammo and Lil Toe. My one critique was that he also had questionable lyrics during his song “ EZ .” One line said, “Going zoom zoom, boom boom,” which sounded childish even when singing it. But I loved the song’s jazzy chords and the call-and-response element.
The Main Event
I am a huge Joji fan, so I couldn’t help but take videos for a good chunk of his setlist. The show started with a video of him walking onstage as the stage lights brightened the arena. Joji remained backlit as he stood center stage, creating an incredible silhouette of himself. He started with “ Sanctuary ,” his third most popular song on Spotify, with 500 million streams. Interestingly, he began with a song from Nectar when his tour was for SMITHEREENS . However, he got to the new album on his third song when he sang “ Night Rider .” He kept screaming, “Los Angeles” during the concert, so I told my friend we should take a shot whenever he said it. In his defense, it made the show more personable, but it is a bit overkill at a certain point.
His set design was unique, featuring cubes on different levels that would change colors. The color combinations were beautiful throughout the show, with purple and sunset orange, pink and purple, and yellow and blue. One incredibly cool visual was on his song “ Daylight ,” where he created a sunset effect with a yellow-orange semicircle behind him. There were also moving yellow and red lights facing the audience, which made it more immersive. He would talk to the audience between each song and introduce his band. He even played two songs from his time on SoundCloud: “ Worldstar money (interlude) ” and “ Plastic Taste .”
EDM Halftime SHow
Although you could tell it was planned, Joji had a “bathroom break” halfway through the concert. He told the audience that he had to piss and then walked offstage. A timer was put on the screen, and they played a peeing sound effect. Once the timer stopped at 51 seconds, the crowd chanted, “Wash your hands,” while waiting for Joji to return. But instead of Joji’s chill songs, a group called Yebi Labs played hype remixes of Joji’s songs. Yebi Labs is Joji’s DJ group that premiered at Head in the Clouds last year. It was so unexpected, but I was happily surprised by this change in pace. It was rave style, EDM music with accompanying pyrotechnics. There were no lasers, but the stage lights moved to the fast-paced beat.
Filthy Frank’s Comedy is Back
For those who knew of Joji before he was Joji, his other persona was Filthy Frank on YouTube. He made comedy sketches on his channel, and his most popular video has 91 million views. While his last video on there was from five years ago, he still has a comedic side to him. On one of the breaks before his next song, Joji had his 75th annual Jack Off competition. I know what it sounds like, but you’ll be surprised. He had eight people dressed up as Jack Sparrow come onstage to see who was the best Jack. The eight Jacks did their best impersonation, and some even brought props, like the infamous jar of dirt. The audience voted for the best Jack by screaming the loudest. The third and last Jack tied for best Jack.
Final Thoughts
Joji may not be one of those performers with flashy dance numbers, but he has a fantastic stage presence. Hearing “Die for You” was the highlight of my night for sure. You can tell that he sings live, and I love the raw emotion in his voice. The comedic parts in between songs were fun, making him seem more human instead of another unreachable celebrity. If you are considering seeing him, I’d say go for it. His next performance is on June 9th and 10th in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the HIVE Festival. Don’t let Joji become an “Afterthought,” as he will return to California in August. Hope to see you there!

Joji: Smithereens Tour Recap
Written by morgan rosenbaum on september 19, 2022.
Joji brought the Smithereens Tour to the 713 Music Hall this past Wednesday with special guests Rei Brown and SavageRealm . The doors to the sold-out show promptly opened at 6:30 p.m, with SavageRealm taking the stage for the first set of the night – doing a great job at warming up the crowd with fun jokes and a freestyle set. Acting as his own DJ by playing tracks off and iPod Classic, the Houston-native capped off his set with the unreleased songs and “ Gary Come Home ” from SpongeBob Squarepants.
Up next was Rei Brown, who played tracks from his latest debut album Xeno , which included songs like “ Thinking Bout You ” featuring Joji himself. Rei Brown is known for their R&B/Pop tunes – a great leeway to Joji’s more melancholic sounds.
After Rei Brown left the stage, the fans who had been waiting in line for hours to get into the venue were packed in and ready for the headlining act, especially since Joji hadn’t performed in Houston since the 2018 88 Rising Tour at Smart Financial Centre . Joji took the stage and kicked the night off with “ Sanctuary ,” followed by “ Yeah Right ” and “ will he .”
Throughout the night, Joji played a combination of songs from his first two albums, Ballads 1 and Nectar , as well as playing bits from his upcoming third album Smithereens . Proving that he has retained an air of comedy since he retired his YouTube career in 2017 , Joji spent an entire song cruising the stage on an e-scooter, and having McDonald’s brought out to his riser halfway through the show. He ended his set with a rendition of his biggest hit “ Slow Dancing in the Dark ,” as well as his latest hit “ Glimpse of Us ” from his upcoming album.
Joji’s third album is set for release this November , embarking on the current tour to promote the release. If you get a chance, we recommend you to buy tickets to see Joji in a city near you.

Just the day before the concert I went to, I read some of these reviews and got super worried his live show wouldn't live up to the hype I had for him; tl;dr, it was everything I could've ever wanted. The concert altogether was about two hours, (not three as we were told, though that's pretty common with concerts so I wasn't expecting three). The opener was Rei Brown, a really talented lo-fi type of artist like joji, his music is definitely on the slower side even for lo-fi but he's crazy talented both vocally and from a production perspective. The most criticism I'd give him is he could add more variety to his music, but for the 40ish minute performance he did I was really impressed (favorite song is Street Fighter). There was a noticable delay between him and Joji, though this was an issue with the venue and not 88rising because there was something wrong with a heater. Now onto Joji, he was incredible. He sung w an instrumental with some light supporting vocals that distract much from the performance (also he didn't rely on these strongly at all), and sang fourteen songs, about 10 from ballads 1, three from in tounges, and you suck charlie. Great show.

Took my daughter to last nights show in SanFrancisco as she is a big fan. Had to buy 3rd party tickets for WAY too much because it was sold out. Joji came on at 9:30 after the opener finished a bit after 9:00. He then only played a 50 minute set!!! What? Are you kidding? The opening act played a longer set than him! I can't believe we drove almost 2 hours and paid $200 for less then an hour show. That is not cool. The 45 minutes that he played was alright, although he strongly relied on the backtrack vocals. He wore a huge puffy coat with no shirt on underneath. Then he kept taking it off saying it was so hot, then 40 seconds later would put it back on. He did this at least 12 times. It was kind of distracting. A roadie finally gave him a t-shirt but he decided to throw that one to the audience. Then for he asked for another one later to put on. He said "Make some F* noise SanFrancisco" about 20 times. Come on dude, you can do better.
also sidenote since we can’t reply to reviews, no one here should be complaining about price of admission. Pre-sale tickets were about $25 and at door tickets were $30. I bought 2 tickets at door for $60 and from what I saw, only about 10 people bought their tickets there. Do not complain about buying your $100+ tickets from somewhere else as that is not Joji’s fault whatsoever. in addition to this i saw a review about general admission pushing past VIP. i was one of the first people (like 4th) in the general admission line and when i walked in most VIP were crowded in the middle which allowed me to get to a corner near the front that only had about 6 VIPs in front of me. if anyone who wasn’t VIP was trying to push past you it’s your responsibility to be more assertive on telling them to back off. Do not blame Joji on problems you could have dealt with, thanks.
I really enjoyed myself at the concert but I paid for VIP to just stand there for three hours and watch him for 45 minutes. Once General Admission people were allowed to pour in they were pushing the VIP out of the way to get to the front of the stage. Next time they should think of having a seperate area for the VIP that is barricaded off because I had people all over me and hitting me, purposely pushing me out of the way.
The VIP package was also just a signed poster, a drawstring bag, a beanie and fake tattoos.
Hoping the nightclub also thinks of the difference between VIP and GA and give the VIP more benefits. Felt like I paid more to stand there and get pushed around. Not going to the Middle East Downstairs again from this experience.
-the audio was messed up and no one could hear the song sanctuary. It was even more messed up because joji himself didnt know we couldnt hear him so he continued the song until the end. So ultimately, i didnt get to hear my artist sing my fav song so I was super bummed.
-they didnt sell merch so that was pretty upsetting.
-the show ended really early and he didn't sing his new release???
-overall the show was very short and wish the audio was working properly. I cant believe the sound system people allowed him to continue singing the entire song when clearly it wasnt working. So disappointed.
short concert (40 mins)
audio quality wasn't perfect, background was louder than vocals
he left the stage halfway through and came back a few minutes later without explanation (probably asthma or some other illness, but people were mad)
hype man outstays his welcome and is louder than the artist
good music though, personally i feel like its worth the price of admission (29 euros) but i understand why a lot of people left the venue feeling ripped off and dissapointed
opening act was really long and really loud - so much so that joji's set seemed overshadowed. tickets said show started at 7pm but he didn't come on stage until 9:30 (standing for 2.5 hours was not fun). the good thing is - you can't remember physical pain so although our legs and backs were aching it is all but a pleasant memory. he sang all our favourite songs, and the visuals (especially during Attention) were fantastic. overall good show but strong setbacks.
JOji had great energy and imagery on the screen behind him to add to the mood of his music. Joji's crowd interaction was him sharing chips and dip with people in the front rows. Unfortunately his mic went out for a bit so one song was missed but then he came back already to go. He sang his key songs, most memorably 'Slow Dancing in the Dark'. I came for the opener Phum Viphurit who was unreal live and had such a upbeat performance and crowd inclusion.
Well, first of all the concert didn’t go 3 hours as planned. The first 45 minutes,a crappy DJ played some music. He then left but Joji didnt come for good 20 minutes. He finally came, played for an hour and then the concert ended.
So,if its easy for you to get there,i would definitely recommend going there. But don’t travel from afar just to watch him lipsync his own songs
I was realy looking forward for this concert. Being a great fan of joji's past and present work, I wanted to see his talent on a live stage... So disapointed to see only another SoundCloud artist, uncapable to Sing on a live stage... Also, it was to short (only 2hours,he could Sing some old songs of his repertoir)

Coming off of his previous hit albums, Joji's "Smithereens" felt like a half-cooked and overhyped EP rather than a sequel album to rival his previous release. The album's opener, "Glimpse of Us," is a strong melodic opening and sets the album's theme of missing an ex. The rich instrumentals and cutting lyrics work to create a telling story: the idea of a perfect ex-lover.

While 'Nectar' was a longer project, emblazoned with features and bigger production, 'SMITHEREENS' almost feels like the big brother of Joji's seminal debut, 'BALLADS 1'. While the album lingers in heartbreak territory, this intensity acts as a necessary wake up call from SMITHEREENS' dark place. The delicate balance struck between mellow and passionate tracks is a true strength of the album. Every song packs a punch, but one song outshines the rest of the album. "1AM FREESTYLE"' is a stunning culmination ...
