Fleets are the core of the STO gaming community. Individually, they exert influence over gameplay and economics while together, they further allow the game to thrive. To get acquainted with fleets, let me first provide an overview of the several different kinds of fleets you can find on Star Trek Online:

1- Majority of fleets are bank fleets, created by an individual to allow greater storage for their character. I call these Utility Fleets. Utility fleets are mostly created by solo players who don't usually care for company in-game in the first place. They comprise a large but mostly invisible percentage of players, as they keep to themselves for the most part and have settings turned to private.

2- The second largest class belongs to Role Play or RP fleets. These are what players hear most of: community-centered groups whose real goals may vary from gathering players of a single nation or species together to becoming a mega fleet. Many of them use the cover of Role Play and the casual fleet atmosphere approach to attract players not interested in the hardcore approach of other fleet types. RP can range from historical time travel to erotic fantasies, for players who look forward to hooking up with an e-date. Because the RPers friendly, sociable approach attracts members, many fleets use this as an advertising gimmick, and players who join one sometimes end up disappointed because though the fleet may have a few members, it may have little of actual use to the player in terms of active expert help or equipment. Due to that and lack of available players for all fleets, many end up abandoned in middle tier as their founders/leaders get dismayed, annoyed, or just flat broke.

3- Next we have fleets established for fleet equipment, by people who don't want to pay other fleets to get it. These Fleets require large amounts of contributions, because some of the best equipment in-game is found at the highest tier, T5; and to get there requires many members contributing a massive amount of resources. Goal-oriented, serious builders, they look down on anyone not contributing and usually kick players buying their stuff without giving. Ultimately, these fleets end up becoming the richest in game, as they ultimately charge players for their equipment. For that reason they are most at risk for sabotage and and falling prey to fleet thieves. Though they may start with good intentions, ill experiences along the way can lead them to be snobbish and engage in cheating players or hoarding. Having little interest in any player not in their fleet, many of these develop bad reputations and also wind stuck/abandoned mid-tier.

4- Teaming Fleets. These fleets focus on gathering a team for missions, whether it be for PvP or PvE, or any other type of game mission. These fleets are founded to specialize, e.g. effectively accomplish specific types of game activity. Though many of these teams do accomplish that objective, the resulting power tends to leave them looking down on lesser specialized players or those who aren't as trained or have as much experience as they. New players generally avoid Teaming fleets since they tend to troll and demean those of lesser ability.

5- Lastly we have Backup or Extension fleets. Though some fleets, like Starfleet Dental, maintain a backup fleet for emergencies, most of these are founded to expand a single guild and allow for more members than the current game limit of 500. By creating more fleets and using a Private Fleet Channel (PFC), a single fleet can in effect expand their membership limitlessly. This is usually done by fleets who have reached all their Tiers, feel the need to continue building as a community activity, to expand their influence, or to compete with other mega-fleets. I like to call these multi-fleet guilds Empire Fleets. Many players join T-5 fleets because they are active, have fully stocked fleet provisions, are well established, and usually have a well known reputation. The downside for newcomers to a T-5, is they are already set in their regulations and methods, and along with having a group of favorites it usually gives perks to, it can be very difficult for any player to rise in the ranks upon reaching top tier state. Opportunities for advancement open once a fleet creates an extension, allowing for continued growth. The use of extension fleets is a topic of controversy among the STO community, with some arguing that without expansion, a fleet would not be as progressive; while others maintain duplicate fleets lessen the availability of players for lesser tier fleets in need of support.

11. Star Trek Online Fleets

If you've spent longer than 10 or 15 minutes in the general areas, you've seen quite a few of these. Fleet Invites. They're sent quite frequently from huge fleets that want more and more members. Fleets are the ST:O version of guilds or clans, groups of players that have joined together. There are no achievements tied to fleets, but finding the right fleet and joining it can have advantages towards making the other achievements come quicker. You don't have to do much else than finding the right fleet and joining it, as the majority of bonuses that will help with achievements are passive and don't require participation in the fleet projects beyond what you want. There are a few different bonuses that will help with achievements, and I'll point out the type of fleet you're looking for. Under Social & Team in the Main Menu, you'll see the option "Find a Fleet". You're looking for a fleet that advertises they have a high fleet level, as that indicates they have more buildings upgraded which will provide more bonuses. Once you do, try messaging some of their active members asking for an invite. The primary building of a fleet is the Starbase, which you'll find in the bottom left of the Beta Quadrant for Federation, and bottom middle for Klingon. Depending on what the fleet has unlocked, you can typically use the starbase transporter room to quickly move to other fleet holdings.

Fleet Marks and Credits

Fleet Credits are the main currency used for buying fleet provisions. These are acquired by contributing to fleet projects, which you'll find under Fleet Holdings in the Social & Team menu. Usually fleets will have either provision projects in progress, or experience gaining projects for the various fleet holdings. You'll have the option to contribute different things, though usually the most common required are Fleet Marks. Fleet Marks can be acquired from PVE queue reward boxes that are usually an option. More information on that can be found on the Reputation page of the Walkthrough. Fleet Marks reward credits in a 1 mark:50 credits ratio. Energy Credits are at 100EC:1 Credit, so they're the worst to contribute. Don't contribute Dilithium, as that would be needed for buying items if you need them.

Fleet Bonuses

Fleets can combine together into Armadas, with one Alpha fleet having three Beta fleets, and each Beta fleet having three Gamma fleets. Within the Armada, The Alpha fleet gets the best Experience boost. This isn't entirely important as you'll get to 60 with one character doing all the story achievements, but if you're wanting to level up significantly faster, this can be helpful. Beta fleets are even with Experience and Dilithium bonus, while Gamma fleets are weighted to provide a Dilithium bonus. You can view the fleet holdings of other fleets in the Armada, and typically they're more welcoming to new players in their fleet if they come from another fleet in the Armada.

The Dilithium mine has a duty officer that gives rather decent development experience jobs, as well as an assignment that lets you refine an extra 500 dilithium a day very quickly. Preferably, the fleet should have this at level 3.

The Research Lab is one of the more useful buildings, so I would strongly advise finding a fleet that has it at level 3. When you beam into the interior, the very northwest of the lab has two mission NPC's. One gives you a duty officer daily mission that will grant you extra R&D experience upon completion, and the other has a regular quest that requires you to complete a specific R&D project in whatever field you choose. This requires quite a few crafting materials that you can aquire from queues or buy off the exchange using your Tour the Galaxy credits, but can give you an additional 5,000+ experience in your chosen school each day. The research lab, if it is ranked high enough, also allows you to buy another R&D slot, as well as extra traits. These cost quite a bit of fleet credits, but could be useful. You can also purchase green, blue, or purple Research Lab duty officers if you need more for crafting. Purple officers can help you crit on research projects, which will provide extra experience with each project.

The Spire contains many of the better endgame items, so ideally you would want this at Level 3 as well. You do need permissions from the fleet to buy items at the vendors, and most fleets have a 'contribution requirement', where you only get permissions after you've earned so many fleet credits with the fleet. Buying items from vendors are the only things that require permissions, everything else is available to every member. The Elite Fleet Efficient Combat Impulse Engines are a good choice to improve your Tour the Galaxy if you don't have the reputation for the Assimilated Borg Impulse Engines, as they increase your sector space speed.

The Starbase, on the far left room directly ahead of the Transporters, has a personnel requisition officer. For Fleet credits, you can easily pick up more duty officers that can help fill out your complement and allow more missions to be performed. There are more items in the north section of the starbase. Depending on the level of the starbase science labs, being in the fleet will also provide you with more transwarp destinations.

Starfleet Command's insignia

Combadge

Starfleet's insignia as a combadge

Starfleet dates back to United Earth in the mid-2130s where it was tasked to "...seek out new life and new civilizations," and "...go boldly where no man has gone before.". Starfleet played an instrumental role in bringing the founders of the Federation together in the lead up to the Earth-Romulan War. On the founding of the Federation in 2161, Starfleet became the Federation's primary exploratory and defense organisation bringing together crews from across the Federation.

As the Federation expanded, so did Starfleet's crews with a myriad of new species joining its ranks. Often, Starfleets deep space exploration prompted conflict with those fearing the Federation's expansion, such as the Klingons and Cardassians . As such, Starfleet's peaceful mission of exploration has seen frequent interruptions to defend the Federation from invasion. However it was only the encounter with the Borg that prompted the Federation to create outright warships such as the U.S.S. Defiant in the 24th century.

By the late 24th century, the Starfleet deemed the Borg threat had subsided and refocused on exploration. Starfleet also expanded its admission guidelines to accept non-Federation citizens to Starfleet Academy without command-level recommendation.

In the 25th century, Starfleet found itself called once again to its defensive role as the Federation-Klingon War started in 2405. It rapidly found itself embroiled again in multiple conflicts, including the return of the Borg in 2409.

Emblem [ | ]

Starfleet's insignia

Starfleet insignias have, at various points in the organization's history, shown the wearer's division in its centre. A star signifies tactical, a stylized spiral signifies engineering and a circle with longitudinal lines signifying science. Note the assocition of these icons, and division colors, differs slightly between Star Trek Online and main Star Trek canon .

Uniform [ | ]

Odyssey Uniform Group

Starfleet Uniform in 2409; a white top section is a command uniform. Red highlights indicate command or tactical, yellow: operations and blue: sciences

In 2410, Starfleet's uniform is the Odyssey design , although captain's have considerable leeway in the uniform regulations for their crew. Starfleet uniforms are typically color coded to the wearer's division (in Star Trek Online: red for tactical, yellow for engineering and blue for science; note that this deviates from canon ) while rank is indicated by a series of collar pips (this varies by time period).

Ranks [ | ]

Starfleet ranks roughly mirror those of the US navy, with crew being given ranks of Cadet , Ensign , Lieutenant Junior Grade , Lieutenant , Lieutenant Commander and Commander . Ship commanders are usually at the rank of Captain , but sometimes a commander is referred to as Captain even if they are at a different rank. Senior officers hold the ranks of Vice , Rear , Admiral and Fleet Admiral .

Command [ | ]

Starfleet Command , based in San Francisco , is the fleet's operating authority and answers directly to the Federation President, Aennik Okeg . Starfleet Command runs the fleet's day-to-day operations, with Fleet Admiral Jorel Quinn , based on Earth Space Dock , being the most senior officer encountered.

Departments and agencies [ | ]

Major Starfleet bodies include;

  • Starfleet Medical : the most senior medical staff of Starfleet who take the lead on combatting major contagious and medical research.
  • Starfleet Intelligence : the Federation's intelligence agency. Not to be confused with Section 31 .
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers : are the fleet's finest technical minds and the creators of most of the Starfleet's most advanced ships and technology (alongside the, independent, Daystrom Institute ).

Player Characters [ | ]

Upon starting a new Starfleet character, players must choose a career (analogous to a 'class' from other MMORPGs ) and a species (or race). The career determines the character's native abilities, and the race determines the character's innate traits, and in certain cases, special abilities. In ground combat, the career choice and racial traits drastically affect the gameplay and strategies used by the player.

When the player completes the tutorial (or skips it), a Starfleet Light Cruiser is assigned to them, which acts as the player's avatar in space and sector space , and is the primary method of combat and interaction in space. The character's career affects the type of gameplay strategies used by the player, as well as the customizable Bridge Officer abilities and ship consoles.

Classes [ | ]

In Star Trek Online , players may choose which career they wish their character to adopt. Players are able to choose from the following three career paths:

Each profession has its own advantages in the gameplay of Star Trek Online, but does not restrict what playable starships are available, nor the main skill progression beyond a handful of unique abilities and traits.

Races [ | ]

Starfleet characters have a diverse range of playable races to choose from including long standing Federation members such as Andorians and Vulcans, to Starfleet allies such as the Ferengi and Talaxians. Most races are free to play, while some are paid for.

Each race offers unique traits and abilities which can aid a certain type of play. Once the race is chosen, it cannot be changed so it is advisable to choose carefully.

The Federation includes hundreds of members, with non-playable species in-game including the Aenar , Deltans , Denobulans , Ithenites , Risians , Violaceans and Zambeans . Dozens of other non-Federation species have been seen to serve in Starfleet including Capellans , Ktarian , Xenexians and Photonic lifeforms to name a few.

Starships [ | ]

There are three main types of playable Starfleet vessel, each with numerous sub-types for different ranks and styles of play, and each of those sub-types with a number of cosmetic variants. The types of vessel are generally biased towards a specific class, but players of any class can captain any type of vessel.

Storyline missions [ | ]

The only arc completely exclusive to the 25th Century Starfleet faction is the tutorial arc. Following “Welcome to Earth Spacedock” , TOS Starfleet and DSC Starfleet characters join all 25th Century Starfleet missions for the Klingon War and Romulan arcs. Federation-aligned Dominion characters can also play these missions while Romulan Republic and Klingon Empire characters join from “The Vault” onwards.

Military (NPCs) [ | ]

The Federation's primary military branch, Starfleet, possesses a wide array of diverse vessels suited for space exploration, combat, defense, diplomatic, and scientific profiles. Starfleet vessels typically carry a "U.S.S." prefix .

Critter Rank 0 icon

Ground Forces [ | ]

Bosses [ | ].

  • The faction icon for Starfleet NPCs occasionally lists them as Federation. References to the faction can use Federation and Starfleet interchangeably, although in canon they are distinct organizations.

Star Trek: Fleet Week!

By Ambassador Kael | Fri 23 Sep 2022 08:00:00 AM PDT

star trek online fleets

All hands to your stations, senior officers to the bridge! Cryptic Studios’ Star Trek Online , alongside Modiphius’ Star Trek Adventures , in partnership with the Streampunks , are excited to announce STAR TREK FLEET WEEK! Beginning October 10 and ending October 15, FLEET WEEK is celebration of the starships that take us boldly into the final frontier.

In this new era of Star Trek , starships are constantly joining the armada with more appearing in every new TV show, film, comic, book, tabletop game, and video game. But the starships of Star Trek are more than mere vehicles. Through them, our heroes chart strange new worlds, build communities, and explore the human condition. Like their crews, the audience comes to know the ships of Star Trek as characters themselves. These starships are homes, they are protectors, and they are companions. For decades fans have discussed, dissected, designed, and depicted Star Trek starships. For over half a century, the starships of Star Trek have inspired scientists, artists, and even politicians to imagine a hopeful future for humanity.

STAR TREK FLEET WEEK, an event dedicated to these majestic starships, will begin on Monday, October 10 and culminate with Admiralty Day on October 15, a day full of panels packed with experts and Star Trek Veterans excited to celebrate and discuss Star Trek and its starships: how they look, how they work, and what makes them so special.
