Summary [ ]

On board the USS Discovery , shift five is coming to an end. As crewmembers leave cargo bay 3 for its decontamination , one of the cargo containers unlocks, and a hand, appearing partly transparent, emerges from the container. Catching itself on a jagged edge of the container hatch, the inhabitant shrieks in pain, and bright orange blood drips onto the deck.

In her quarters, Sylvia Tilly has an awkward conversation with her mother , about her participation in the Command Training Program . Commenting on the intelligence of Tilly's stepsister , and the untidiness of Tilly's desk, Siobhan compares the situation to a time when Tilly was a child and ran away when she was unable to climb a wall that her schoolmates could. With the transmission ended, Tilly falls back onto her bed, grabs her pillow , and screams into it.

Sylvia releases quadruple espresso

Tilly orders an espresso following a stressful conversation with her mother.

Tilly orders a quadruple espresso in the mess hall , despite the disapproval of the ship's computer. Contemplating her coffee, she is suddenly disturbed by movement, noises, and the appearance of a strange orange fluid. A figure then drops to the floor, and the mess hall systems suddenly malfunction – lights flicker and the food synthesizers eject random foods into the room. When the food storm calms, Tilly watches as an alien woman shimmers into view, growling. Despite the woman's aggression towards her, Tilly is able to scan the orange fluid with a nearby tricorder , and discovers that the woman is Xahean , and a teenager .

While the teenage Xahean is distracted by the ice cream staining her clothes and the other food around them, Tilly spots a communicator , explaining that it can translate for them, and asks for the Xahean's name. Although she responds sarcastically, noting that she built a translator herself when she was a child, Tilly's retort about reprogramming her food synthesizer to only output ice cream at the same age leads to the Xahean finally identifying herself as Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po – which she shortens to "Po" when Tilly has trouble following.

As Tilly tries to explain how bad Po's situation is stowing away aboard a Federation starship , and how worried her family must be, the Xahean says that she had to run away, and that her parents and brother are dead. Just then, the mess hall doors open, and the next shift enters to see the mess, which Tilly attributes to a "hormonal space rabbit ."

Xahea diplomatic hail APB

Tilly finds a "galactic APB" for Po.

Getting Po back to her quarters, Tilly begins a search for recent incidents on Xahea . To Tilly's initial skepticism, Po explains that her species was born with their planet, which makes them twins and ensures a natural balance on her world. Tilly's search soon reveals that Po's disappearance has triggered a diplomatic hail for her safe return as "strategically critical," which Po says is the result of her developing a dilithium incubator , which she did to give something back to the world she grew up with, but her people ignored her desires, becoming greedy and desperate for warp technology. Tilly sympathizes with Po's feelings of being unheard, but asks who else will be able to help shepherd her world through this transition, and Po comes to the realization that she is the only one who can protect her "twin sister."

Xahean dilithium crystal

Po gives Tilly a dilithium crystal, asking her to come visit Xahea

As they get ready to return Po to Xahea, she quickly discerns how the transporter works, and Tilly asks who she learned from. When Po notes that it was her brother, but that he wasn't a scientist , but rather the king , Tilly suddenly realizes that Po is not just a commoner, but Xahean – she is about to be their queen. Po says she ran because she felt unprepared for her role, and did not tell Tilly because she wanted to talk to another person, not someone awed by her status. She gives Tilly a dilithium crystal from Xahea, and then asks her about her earlier comments about the command program being a "mistake"; Tilly responds that it was "something dumb" that is gone now, before beaming her friend away.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" I will remember to expect nothing… even from this espresso. Espresso –I release you. "

" There was a hormonal space rabbit. He escaped from the lab and then he got loose in here… He's got mood swings. "

" When the people who are supposed to care about you don't listen to you, it's it's frightening and it's lonely and it makes you feel like you're crazy or like you're like, not even there. "

Star trek: discovery’s biggest future mystery is finally answered.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4's time travel finally answers one of the show's oldest questions about "Calypso" from Star Trek: Short Treks.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS For Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange."

  • Star Trek: Discovery finally connects the dots between the show and the Short Treks episode "Calypso."
  • "Face the Strange" explores time loops and a Breen attack that destroys the Federation.
  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 sets Star Trek: Short Treks' "Calypso" in an alternate future timeline.

Star Trek: Discovery finally answered one of the show's biggest mysteries about the Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Calypso." In its fifth and final season, Discovery has incorporated more references and connections to past Star Trek than any previous season. Following a classic Star Trek plot, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 , "Face the Strange" finds Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) stuck in a time loop caused by Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) that shockingly connects to the Short Trek "Calypso."

Written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose, "Face the Strange" reflects on Star Trek: Discovery's history and how much the characters have changed since Discovery's earliest seasons . Since Burnham and Rayner were transporting just as the time jumping began, they remain aware that they are in a time loop, as does Stamets, due to his Tardigrade DNA. As Burnham, Stamets, and Rayner try to determine the cause of their time jumping, they visit Discovery's past, present, and future. In one of the jumps, Burnham and Rayner end up on the empty USS Discovery first seen in Star Trek: Short Treks season 1, episode 2, "Calypso."

9 Star Trek Characters Who Can Hide Discovery Season 5 Treasure Hunt Clues

Star trek: discovery finally answers short trek’s “calypso” mystery, captain burnham and commander rayner jump to 3218, 27 years after discovery season 5..

In Star Trek: Short Treks' "Calypso," a human soldier named Craft (Aldis Hodge) is rescued from his escape pod by the USS Discovery's sentient computer, Zora (Annabelle Wallis). Zora reveals that she has been alone for nearly a thousand years and has spent the time evolving herself. Zora falls in love with Craft, and the two connect over old movies, particularly 1957's Funny Face. Craft eventually makes the difficult decision to use Discovery's lone warp-capable shuttlecraft to attempt the long journey back to his home, unsure if the shuttle will even make it that far.

Zora shows Burnham and Rayner the wreckage of the destroyed Federation headquarters, telling them they must find a way out of the time loop to prevent this future from happening.

Star Trek: Discovery 's season 5, episode 4 finally reveals that the USS Discovery ended up abandoned in "Calypso" because of Star Trek: Trek: Deep Space Nine 's villains, the Breen . When Burnham and Rayner jump to a point about thirty years into their future, they follow the sound of old show tunes to Discovery's empty bridge. A surprised Zora reveals that, in this timeline, the Breen acquired the Progenitors' technology and used it to attack the Federation. Zora shows Burnham and Rayner the wreckage of the destroyed Federation headquarters, telling them they must find a way out of the time loop to prevent this future from happening.

Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner visit Zora in 3218, 27 years after the events of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 in 3191.

Short Trek’s “Calypso” Will Never Happen After Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Captain burnham and her crew will ensure the breen never get the progenitor technology..

It's unlikely Star Trek: Discovery will end with the destruction of the Federation, and it's safe to assume that Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery's crew will find the Progenitors' treasure and prevent the Breen attack. This means that the Federation will not be destroyed, the Discovery crew won't be killed by the Breen, and Zora will not be abandoned for a thousand years. Star Trek: Short Treks' "Calypso," then, takes place in an alternate timeline where the Federation lost, and the events of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will render that potential future - and "Calypso" - null and void within Star Trek 's Prime Timeline.

"Calypso" taking place in an alternate future also helps explain any discrepancies between the Short Treks episode and Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek has played with alternate timelines before (most notably with J.J. Abrams' Kelvin timeline Star Trek movies ). Zora and Craft will still have their moment in another reality, but one that is not part of the Prime Universe Star Trek timeline. "Face the Strange" feels like classic Star Trek in the best way, and though Discovery season 5's writers did not know about the show's cancelation, it already feels like they are tying up loose ends. Thankfully, Star Trek: Discovery finally addressed Zora and the USS Discovery's future in "Calypso." It's great to have the answer, at last, that the events of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 set Star Trek: Short Treks' "Calypso" in an alternate future.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Rayner & Burnham Faced the Strange

By using a Time Bug, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 4 revisited the series' greatest hits, and deepened its heroes' characters and journeys.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 4, "Face the Strange," now streaming on Paramount+ .

In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Captain Michael Burnham and her crew are in a race against a pair of space-pirates for the future of the Federation. Yet, with only five clues to find before getting to the finish line, there were bound to be some detours. "Face the Strange" is one such side-mission, but it's also a brilliant way to look back at the series' larger journey from being the new kid on the franchise's block to becoming a classic Star Trek series .

Producers said that Season 5 wasn't supposed to end the series, yet this episode is a perfect addition for its final mission. By using time travel as a framing device, the episode looked back at the journey the crew, and especially Burnham, embarked on ever since the show launched in 2017. This was exactly the kind of nostalgic and emotional trip down memory lane that one would expect a character-driven series like Star Trek: Discovery to do in its swan song.

Of course, time travel shenanigans are a classic Star Trek motif, and Star Trek: Discovery already had its share of such adventures. That said, what made this particular time-traveling escapade special was that it allowed for the return of a long-lost character, and it gave Commander Rayner a chance to further define and refine his character while also affirming his place on the Discovery's crew . While his connection to the crew is still a bit tertiary, this episode really showed that Burnham and Rayner made a fantastic and complementary duo.

Face the Strange Revisited Star Trek: Discovery's Greatest Hits

Captain michael burnham and commander rayner relived some of the show's best moments, star trek: discovery ending is a blessing in disguise.

At the end of "Jinaal (Season 5, Episode 3)," Moll slipped into the Trill symbiont caves and planted a strange device on Ensign Adira Tal's sleeve. When "Face the Strange" opened while affirming that the recently broken-up Gray Tal and Adira will remain friends, the spider-like device (later referred to as the Time Bug) crawled from their sleeve and onto the ship.

Meanwhile, Rayner's harsh style of command rubbed Burnham the wrong way. She asks him to join her in the ready room for a slight dressing down, which inadvertently proves to be the crew's saving grace. When the Time Bug does its dirty work, the captain and first officer use their personal transporters, which prevents them from becoming unstuck in time like the rest of the ship and crew. This allowed them to find a way to free the Discovery from its time-displaced prison, and to reflect on their lives.

There is a brief jaunt to the future, Burnham and Rayner learn that their crew died and that the Federation was decimated after a Breen attack. This was also the third mention of the Breen this season, and one of their heaviest bits of foreshadowing yet. Interestingly, this grim sequence evoked the Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Calypso (Season 1, Episode 2)," which featured a marooned soldier many, many tears in the future encountering an abandoned USS Discovery occupied only by Zora.

The two Starfleet officers then appear on the ship during its journey through the wormhole at the end of Season 2. Next, they were thrown back to the battle against Control, the evil artificial intelligence that wanted to merge with the "Sphere Data" that became Zora. They also traveled to the distant past before the Discovery was even launched. However, their most important trip to the past took place just a few weeks after Burnham joined the ship. The best thing about this sequence was that it allowed Airiam, the human-turned-cyborg who died in Season 2, to return for a brief few scenes. That said, this sequence was all about Burnham and her personal journey.

Captain Michael Burnham Confronted Her Past, Insecure Self in Face the Strange

It's been a long road for michael burnham, going from mutineer to captain, star trek: discovery's alex kurtzman & michelle paradise talk final season.

As Rayner and Commander Paul Stamets try to figure out how to stop the Time Bug, Burnham encountered her past self in a turbolift. Past Burnham immediately thinks her future self is a shapeshifter. Nitpicky fans might wonder why Future Burnham didn't just drop some knowledge only they would know. However, in a universe with wormholes, time travel and the USS Discovery's spore drive , the possibility of a shapeshifter using their telepathic abilities to copy the memories of whoever they impersonated wasn't a big stretch. This led to a fun sequence where Burnham fought her past self.

After incapacitating her past self with a Vulcan Nerve Pinch, Burnham gave voice to the subtext of this entire journey. Burnham reminded audiences just how desperate things were for her back then. She was Starfleet's first mutineer, and her actions led to the death of her mentor, Captain Philippa Georgiou. Even though the Klingon leader, T'Kuvma, was going to start a war with the Federation, Burnham also blamed herself for this close call. The most unbelievable thing for the understandably self-loathing Past Burnham to accept was a future in which she not only had rank again, but was trusted enough to be given a ship.

While this makes Burnham Star Trek 's most relatable captain among the franchise's imperfect fans, the character herself can't believe she could attain new heights after falling so far. Yet, in trying to stop Rayner and Stamets, Burnham again proved her worth . She's determined to do the right thing to protect her ship, her crew and Starfleet itself. This episode underscored that Burnham's unique skill isn't her intellect or fighting prowess, but her commitment to higher ideals even when she thinks she's failed them in unforgivable ways.

Commander Rayner Finally Connected with the Crew in Face the Strange

Commander rayner learned new things about himself by visiting the past, star trek: discovery actors doug jones & david ajala prepare for their last adventure.

While Burnham is and always was heroic, it's actually Rayner who saved the day and the rest of time in this episode. Hearkening back to his previous attempts to know the crew, Rayner was now able to prove to Past Lieutenant Commander Gen Rhys that they do know each other. Rayner may have only given Reese 20 words, but these were enough to discover Rhys's affection for Constitution class ships like the USS Enterprise . Still, Past Burnham was not convinced. It's only through Rayner sincerely connecting with her and his own understanding of what it's like to fall from grace that seals the deal.

He told Past Burnham something no one but she could know. Specifically, that when she first stepped on the bridge of the Discovery, she felt like she didn't belong. Yet, he reaffirms that she does belong not just on the vessel, but in command of it. Yes, she's made mistakes, huge ones when compared to those committed by previous Starfleet heroes and captains. However, her heart is always in the right place. In Season 1, Burnham seemed more Vulcan than human, but her emotions were still there. In fact, she cared so much that she told Captain Gabriel Lorca she didn't deserve to serve on a starship.

Another touching moment between crew members in "Face the Strange" came via Rayner's collaboration with Stamets . He was already depressed this season since the spore drive is, effectively, dead technology. Rayner also killed his science-buzz upon realizing the potential of the Progenitor's technology. Yet, when Stamets was worried about being able to save the ship, Rayner motivated him by saying "old dogs" like them still had life-saving tricks up their uniform sleeves. Despite his gruff demeanor, this episode showed why Rayner was such a successful long-serving leader in Starfleet -- especially in a post-Burn galaxy.

Moll & L’Ak’s Time Bug Is a Brutal Weapon Tied to Star Trek Mythology

The time bug was used for more than just nostalgic fanservice, star trek: discovery's sonequa martin-green embarks on one final voyage.

Star Trek is full of near-magical and nonsensical technology like the transporters themselves , but even by these loose standards, the Time Bug is a little confusing. If Burnham, Rayner and Stamets weren't immune from its effects thanks to the latter's "tardigrade DNA," it's unclear exactly what the device does. Somehow, the present-day USS Discovery is incapacitated while the ship jumps back and forth through time. No one on the vessel is aware of this, and the crew complement changes with the times.

When Burnham and company arrive back in the 22nd Century, it's unclear what happened to folks like Commander Jett Reno or Adira, who were always in the 32nd Century. Trying to figure out how the Time Bug works is really a waste of time, since it's nothing more than a fun sci-fi concept that was used to drive an episode. The show gets around this when Rayner says the Time Bug is technology leftover from the Temporal War first introduced back in Star Trek: Enterprise, and wrapped up for good in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Khan episode .

In previous episodes, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 brought in connections to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Chase (Season 6, Episode 20)," and it also built on the Trill mythology established in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The Time Bug is yet another way the series used past Star Trek events to tell new, fresh stories instead of just dropping cute Easter Eggs. The bug was an illegal black-market weapon, but one that (despite its inconsistent details and lack of specifics) fit neatly into this six-decade-old universe.

While the crew lost six hours in their race against Moll and L'ak, they still came out ahead. They are now a more cohesive unit than ever before, meaning they will face whatever challenges come next as a tightly-knit crew. This was the way that any Star Trek crew should be.

Star Trek: Discovery debuts new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+ .

Star Trek: Discovery

  • Time Bug allows for the series to revisit past moments and characters in its final season.
  • The focus on Burnham's journey from mutineer to captain underscores her remarkable journey over five seasons.
  • The episode reveals more aspects to Rayner's character making him more well-rounded.
  • "Face the Strange" is a near-perfect blend of action, sci-fi problem-solving, and character moments.
  • The ensemble takes a backseat because of the time-travel nature of the episode's plot.
  • Moll and L'ak return for a scene but are still not as present as in each episode as perhaps they should be.
  • Saru and T'Rina don't appear making last episode's story with them feel more like an aside.
  • Other than Ariam, past characters like Ash Tyler, Nilsson, Captains Lorca or Pike don't appear feeling like a missed opportunity for a final season victory lap.

star trek short treks season 1

Here's the reason 5 seasons is not the new normal for a Star Trek series

S tar Trek: Discovery and Lower Decks were both canceled this year, bringing an end to an unprecedented era of Star Trek television. At one point the franchise had five shows in active development with the idea of having 50 weeks of Trek in a given year, with Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds essentially running back to back to back to back to back.

From October 28, 2021, to Dec. 29, 2022, all five shows released new seasons, with Star Trek: Prodigy going first with the first half of season one which went until Feb. 3, 2022. Discovery hopped in with season four on Nov. 18, 2021, and wrapped up on March 17, 2022. Picard launched its second season on March 3, 2022, and concluded on May 5, 2022, just in time for Strange New Worlds to begin. That show would go from May 5 to July 7, 2022, with Lower Decks then starting on August 25, 2022. This marked the longest break between shows in nearly a year. Lower Decks would go until October 27, 2022, when, surprise, Prodigy's second half of season one would also start. Lower Decks would conclude on Dec 29, 2022, of that year.

That idea was extremely expensive and extremely short-sighted, as not every show brought in the same amount of fans, but all largely cost relatively close to one another to produce. It was a bad idea and by the end of 2023, only three shows would remain.

Picard was closed out in season three after Paramount+ essentially rejected the desires of Patrick Stewart and Terry Matalas to keep going. Prodigy was canceled during the production of season two. The long-forgotten Short Treks only got two seasons, while Discovery and Lower Decks each got five.

Some believe that the new standard for Star Trek's success is no longer the seven seasons it used to be on television, but five seasons; however, that's just not the case. Star Trek shows never went past seven seasons because that's what they were contracted for initially. The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine were sold as seven-season shows. Voyager was lucky to hit that mark because unlike The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, Voyager was not a syndicated series. This means they could be canceled prior to season seven.

It was just the best-performing show on UPN at the time, and the channel needed a big-ticket item like Star Trek at the time. Enterprise, and the Original Series, were not sold as seven-season shows for syndicated purposes. Enterprise was picked up with similar contracts in place that Voyager had, while The Original Series was a season-to-season order.

The cancelations of Lower Decks and Discovery doesn't mean that the new "standard" is five seasons, it's a sign that these shows were under-delivering in viewers and were costing too much. There's a reason that four of the five shows that were anchoring Paramount+ just under two years ago are all gone; they're expensive as heck to make.

This had nothing to do with a show hitting a natural stopping point and concluding the series because it got it's seven seasons (or in this case five seasons) in. This is a case of private equity firms and debt holders coming to collect the money that outfits like Paramount+ owe.

This is a financial issue more than anything, so to basically say because two shows got canceled heading into season five, that it's the new standard, is to severely miss just how problematic the entire situation at Paramount+ truly is. Every show is on the chopping block; that's not a standard of success, that's a failure of finance.

Don't try to spin this into something it's not. These shows were canceled because the money was gone and the viewership was gone. If it was anything other than that, then Picard and Prodigy would be on their way to five seasons still.

It’s amazing how many LGBT people are on Star Trek now. Love it.

Yeah, but unfortunately, the cover is missing the very first one: Jadzia Dax.

Great art all around! Looking forward to it.

I know I shouldn’t be objectifying shirtless cartoon Sulu, but holy.

Yeah, they made him look ripped.
