Whether you’re looking to study abroad for a semester, head across the pond for a big summer trip or just take a winter or spring break vacay, there’s plenty of ways to see Europe for cheap. How to find cheap flights to Europe 

If you’re searching for ways to travel to Europe for cheap, it all starts with finding a cheap plane ticket. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to get to Europe cheaply and without sacrificing leg room! 

How far in advance to book flights to Europe?

The best time to book flights to Europe depends on when you want to go. A good rule of thumb is to book your flights at least six weeks in advance, but no more than 3-4 months ahead of time. If you’re visiting during winter break (especially over Christmas or New Years) or peak summer months (July and August), book your tickets a bit earlier. The best prices for winter flights are generally in September or early October. For summer flights, the best months to book are February or March. 

Don’t care when you go, just want the cheapest flights? Book in December-February for travels in February or March. You’ll definitely find cheaper prices! 

How much does it cost to fly to Europe? 

Major European hubs often have cheaper flights than smaller, regional airports. The cost of flying to Europe also depends, of course, on where you’re flying from. If you’re traveling from the East Coast of the US to a major European hub, a good price is somewhere around $400 – $600. From the West Coast, a good price is around $500 – $700. If you’re flying into or out of a smaller hub, expect the price to be a bit higher. Still seems too expensive? Don’t worry—you can get discounts on flights as a college student! Cheapest destinations in Europe for students

Traveling to big cities in Europe will be more expensive than visiting smaller, off-the-beaten path destinations. While Paris and Rome absolutely should be on your bucket list, we’ve got a ton more destinations that offer just as much charm at a fraction of the cost. If you’re traveling Europe as a college student, here’s five destinations that need to be on your list: 

Warsaw 

History-lovers, architecture-lovers, foodies and hipsters can all unite in Warsaw! Although often overlooked, Warsaw (the capital of Poland) is a great destination for anyone traveling Europe on a budget. Visit markets and gardens, get a feel for authentic local life, wander through Old Town with centuries of history or head to Praga, the hipster capital of Warsaw for modern art, restaurants, street art and more. The average daily cost to travel in Warsaw is only $40. 

Like other European cities, Budapest is home to cathedrals, castles, parks, historic districts and even thermal spas. Students will easily find relatively cheap accommodation, transportation and food options here. Even better? Many of the best things to see and do are free! Make sure to visit the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle and, of course, the Szechenyi Thermal Baths! The average daily cost to travel in Budapest is $42 a day. 

Krakow is the perfect place in Europe to visit if you’re on a budget, want to have an authentic experience AND want to immerse yourself in culture and history. From the medieval city center to the Old Town to the Jewish Quarter, there’s plenty to see and explore. Visit castles and cathedrals, enjoy wandering through beautiful town squares lined with shops and cafes, or have a tour through the underground salt mine. The average daily cost to travel in Krakow is $38. 

If Prague isn’t on your bucket list yet, it’s time to add it! This budget-friendly city is one of our favorite places to visit in Europe as a college student (or anyone). From the iconic bridges and historic Old Town Square to the unique architecture ranging from the ancient (the 9th-century Prague castle) to the modern (Dancing House, anyone?), modern street art to parks and gardens, there’s plenty to explore. The average daily cost to travel in Prague is $50 a day. 

Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is often overlooked among European cities, but it’s an incredible destination—and one that’s easily explored on a budget. With Persian, Slavic, Greek and Ottoman influences, there’s so much to experience all in one place. Not to mention that it’s home to over 2,000 years of history, from the ancient St. George Rotunda Church to the famous Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, there’s centuries of historical architecture, culture and traditions to explore. The average cost to travel in Sofia is $30 a day. 

How to travel on a budget in Europe 

Avoid tourist hot-spots in peak season. Prices will be MUCH more expensive, travel during off-season or visit more off-the-beaten-path destinations. You’ll save a lot of money AND have a more authentic experience, too! (Remember: for most places in Europe, peak season is July-August, as well as December.)

Find cheap accommodation . This is often the most expensive part of traveling, but there’s lots of ways to make it cheaper. Staying in hostels can save you a TON of money, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded travelers and new travel buddies! Airbnbs can also be a good option, especially in bigger cities. 

Eat local. If you’re eating at fancy, sit-down restaurants for every meal, your budget is going to go out the window pretty quickly! Thankfully, there’s lots more options in Europe to eat cheaply. Check out local markets and cafes, get lunch at a street food stand, shop at local markets and grocery stores and make your own food and most of all, watch where the locals go! The small, unknown restaurants and cafes away from the touristed center of town are often much cheaper and just as delicious (if not more so!). 

Get around Europe on a budget. Good news: there’s lots of cheap transportation options in Europe! If you’re staying in one city, use the local subway or bus systems to get around instead of renting a car or taking taxis. Or rent a bicycle or even a scooter if the city is on the smaller side! 

Rail passes can be a good bet if you’re planning to take lots of long-distance trains in a short amount of time. For example, a 10-day Eurail travel pass costs € 301 ($349 USD). Many flights in Europe cost less than $50, so you may be better off flying between cheaper destinations and buying train tickets for more expensive ones. Long story short: do your research!

Red-eye flights and overnight trains are often a great way to save money when traveling Europe as a college student. Not only do you get a cheaper price (usually) for the route, but because your trip happens at night, you also save the cost of one night’s stay!

In addition to scholarship and grant support, our Europe study abroad program costs vary depending on program length, credits, and other program details. Currently, our programs range from about $4,000 to $23,000 . Summer in Lisbon and January in Prague are two of our least expensive Europe study abroad programs, and they’re fascinating. Although shorter in length, you’ll get to adventure through these historical cities while taking interesting courses – you can’t beat it!  

One of our more expensive options when you study abroad in Europe is our Business + Culture in Amsterdam program. This 18-week program yields 15 semester hours, or 22.5 quarter hours, depending on your institution’s credit system, and the opportunity to study at one of two prestigious institutions: the University of Amsterdam or the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. What to Pack When Studying Abroad in Europe  

Keep in mind what we consider essential items as you prepare to study abroad in Europe:  

Your essential documents: 

• Passport + a photocopy (just in case) 
• Visa + a photocopy  
• A second form of valid ID (e.g., driver’s license or government-issued ID) 
• Plane tickets  
• Proof of health insurance 
• Proof of CIEE enrollment 
• Cash (look this up ahead of time; not all countries considered to be part of Europe use the Euro, although most do)  

Other essential items: 

• Comfortable walking shoes 
• Camera to capture your beautiful surroundings  
• One nice outfit for special occasions 
• Prescription medications, enough for the stay if possible 
• Preferred over-the-counter medications 
• Prescription eyewear 
• Adapters to charge your current tech in Europe’s electrical outlets (this will vary by country too)

Traveling in Europe as a Student: A Complete Guide

Traveling in Europe as a student can be an exciting and enriching experience. Europe is home to a rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, and diverse traditions. Traveling from one country to another with an equally contrasting lifestyle could be done in as little as 2-3 hours. A magical weekend in Prague , trekking in the Alps, beach-life in Algarve or clubbing in Berlin, Europe has it all.

While the experiences are as good as it sounds, the cost of travel can be a major hurdle for students looking to explore Europe. Accommodation, transport, food – it can quickly break the bank if we don’t plan our travel efficiently. However, with proper planning and preparation, it is possible to travel Europe on a budget. There are various cheap accommodation and transport options that we can make use of to plan an affordable vacation. In this blog post, we will cover the major aspects of traveling and will also provide some tips and tricks to efficient budget travel.

Transportation

Transportation is one of the major expenses when traveling in Europe. First rule in transportation is that we plan early. A ticket for tomorrow can cost up to 5 times more than the ticket for next month. Booking your tickets at least a month early helps you save a good amount.

There are many budget-friendly transport options that operate across Europe.

Flixbus: Flixbus is a popular bus company that connects over 3,000 destinations in 35 European countries. They offer affordable prices and could be best used for inter-country travels. They also operate their train services as Flixtrain in a few cities.

RyanAir: RyanAir is a budget airline that offers cheap flights across Europe. It is actually crazy how cheap the tickets are. For as low as 10 Euros, you could travel to Venice from Germany. To give you an idea, I got round trip flight tickets to Faro, Portugal from Germany for just 30 Euros.

The catch is that you can only carry one backpack for that amount. Any normal laptop backpack suffices to the requirement. If you want to carry any additional  bag, it costs a minimum 20 Euros. It is recommended to follow all the instructions while booking to avoid being charged extra.

Wizz Air: Wizz Air is a good option if you want to book a vacation to Eastern Europe. They offer good prices to places like Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, etc. Bit farther from Central Europe, Wizz Air makes it possible to book an affordable getaway to these beautiful places. Eastern Europe has beautiful charming cities and beaches and is more budget friendly than their expensive western counterparts.

Interrail Pass: The Interrail Pass is a train pass that allows you to travel across Europe by train. The pass gives you unlimited train travel in 33 countries in Europe. The cost of the pass varies depending on the duration and the countries you want to visit. More information is provided here: Interrail pass . 

BlaBlaCar: BlaBlaCar is a ride-sharing platform that connects drivers with passengers who are traveling in the same direction. It is a great option for short-distance travels. You can save money on transportation and also have interesting conversations with the driver / fellow riders.

Note: For students / expats in Germany, the 49-Euro ticket is too good a deal. Students might actually purchase for a reduced amount and travel the entire country without having to pay extra for transportation. 😮 Please note that the tickets are only valid in the regional trains.

Accommodation

Accommodation is an essential and major expense while traveling in Europe. There are different accommodation options you can choose from based on your budget and the comfort you require. While accommodation decides heavily on your travel expense, it can also highly impact your travel experience. Living in a private hotel or an airbnb could promise more comfort, while backpacking in hostels could help you meet new people and share experiences. Following are the major accommodation options for your travels.

Hotels: There are many hotel chains that run all around Europe to offer comfortable and diverse accommodation to travelers. They offer comfortable rooms, breakfast, wifi, and additional services upon request. No doubt hotels are the most comfortable stay option for traveling. For budget travelers however, staying in hotels is a luxury in Europe. A room for one could cost somewhere between 60-120 Euros while a couple bedroom could cost anywhere between 80-150 Euros.

Hostels: Hostels are a popular option for budget travelers in Europe. They offer shared dormitory-style rooms and private rooms at affordable prices. Most importantly, it also hosts a lot of travelers like you who’d like to meet someone new in a new city. Hostels provide communal spaces such as kitchens, lounges, and bars, where you can socialize with other travelers.

The probable issue for travelers could be that one cannot expect a proper silence during sleep. Some people can barge in at 3 am after a long night’s party to get some sleep while some like to be silly with their partners in bed. You have to be ready for everything if you’re living  in hostels.

Hostels also offer women-only dorms for those who require more safer stay.

Airbnb: Airbnb was a disruptive innovation in the field of accommodation when it was launched in 2008. Now, people often use it as a verb in the grammar of traveling. “I’m traveling to Rome next month. Let’s airbnb a nice place.”

Airbnb offers easier and accessible travels to people who want to feel like home while traveling. With Airbnb, you can rent a room or an entire apartment. It is often cheaper than a hotel.

Couchsurfing: Couchsurfing is a platform that connects travelers with locals who are willing to offer a free place to stay. It is a great option for budget travelers who want to meet locals and learn about their culture. Couchsurfing charges a modest fee of 13 Euros per year to use their platform and you can host someone, request to stay in someone’s place and also hangout with new people wherever you are. Camping: Another budget-friendly option for travelers who enjoy the outdoors. Campsites are offered in various places where you can book your place for roughly 20-30 Euros per night. Europe has many campsites that offer tents and cabins at affordable prices. Camping also gives you the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Europe. Many campsites can be browsed through Airbnb itself.

Another item in the list where you may find yourself emptying your wallet is food. Food is a major expense, but a very satisfying one. There are many approaches to spending on food during travels. Some days, I’ve found myself crunching on that peanut butter and bread while some days, I like to eat somewhere nice and proper. The best of all though, the most satisfying food you can have in any given place is to try their favorite local dish.

Street Food: Europe has a rich street food culture that offers delicious and affordable food. You can find street food vendors in most cities and towns across Europe. Some popular street foods include falafel, kebab, pizza, and crepes.

Supermarkets: Supermarkets are a great option for budget travelers who want to save money on food. You can buy groceries and prepare your own meals in the communal kitchens provided by hostels and Airbnb rentals. A quick Google maps search will guide you to the closest grocery store where you’re traveling.

Restaurants: Restaurants can be expensive in Europe, but there are many budget-friendly options available. Look for local restaurants that offer set menus or lunch specials at a lower price. In Venice, there were many restaurants offering “Tourist menu”, which would properly fill you up.

Picnics: Europe has many beautiful parks and scenic spots where you can have a picnic. You can buy fresh bread, cheese, and fruits from local markets and have a budget-friendly picnic with a view.

• Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
• Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
• Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
• Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
• Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Easy access to tons of destinations is one of the best parts of living in Europe as a student. When else in your can you take quick study abroad weekend trips to fabulous international destinations? Yes, a weekend in Florence or 36 hours in Lisbon is as fun as it sounds—if not more.

But as you’re preparing to study abroad and looking ahead to your bucket list for student weekend trips in Europe, you’re probably feeling a wee-bit overwhelmed and like you wish you could bring an entire shipping container full of your stuff just in case. 

(Totally normal, right?). 

But truth is, there’s an art to deciding what to pack for weekend student travel in Europe and what to leave behind. You need a small-ish weekend travel backpack. Backpacks are definitely the way to go for weekend travels because they are WAY more convenient and can save lots of time (and headaches). To start with, nothing screams tourist more than a rolling suitcase rumbling down a cobblestone street. Plus, most European cities have metros—this usually involves going up and down lots of stairs. Plain and simple, a weekend travel backpack is much easier to carry. 

Further, at the airport, flight attendants are much less likely to gate check a backpack and they usually don’t make you try to jam it into the impossibly small metal racks either. This means you don’t chance luggage getting lost, and you can save time once you get to you destination by bypassing baggage claim altogether.

The key is picking a weekend travel backpack for students that works for you. Paying a bit more to invest in a brand like Osprey or Patagonia is usually worth it because they are very durable, not to mention they often come with a waist strap (this saves you from sore shoulders by distributing the weight to your hips). They also have special designs that help keep your back from absolutely roasting which is especially key in summer. You really don’t need anything larger than a 30 liter backpack for student weekend trips in Europe (especially if you want to succeed at traveling on budget flights with hand luggage only). Find something with pockets that can be locked for extra security on the metros and at the hostel.

When choosing a purse for study abroad, look for something that is cross body with a flap pocket. These are harder to swipe off your shoulder, and in crowded tourist attractions or on the metro, it’s easy to keep your hand on the flap to ensure no pickpockets can get at your valuables. Keep your purse on the front of your person at all time so you have extra eyes 👀👀👀 on it.

This allows you to mix and match and to ensure you’re not too hot or too cold. Everything that makes it into your backpack should be something you absolutely love and feel comfortable in. Neutral colors like grey, white/cream, and black are your best friends, but be sure to add a couple accent pieces for some pops of color. Scarves and light jackets can help dress up or down an outfit, not to mention keep you appropriately warm or cold. 

Be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave to make sure you bring the right items. Nothing kills a trip more than feeling constantly uncomfortable in what you’re wearing. If rain is in the forecast, make sure your shoes can handle the wet and don’t forget the umbrella!

For jewelry, the best option to keep everything organized and tangle free is to get some small plastic bags. These can easily be found on Amazon in a variety of sizes, or you can just stop by your local jeweler!

Your clothes packing list for weekend trips in Europe for college students should include:

• 2 pairs of bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts, whatev!)
• 1 nicer outfit for going out—this can use the shirts and pants you’ve already packed or be something entirely new
• 1 pair of comfy pjs
• 3-4 pairs of underwear & socks
• a light jacket or sweater to wear if it gets cold
• a cute scarf that goes with at least half the shirts
• Summer caveat—Swap the pants and shirts for couple of dresses or tank tops. Dresses are the best because they look fancy but are SO comfortable.

3. Get on board the packing cubes train

There are two types of people in the world: people who use packing cubes, and people who will eventually use packing cubes (because they’re great). Your student travel in Europe is the perfect excuse to hop on!

Packing cubes help you maximize the space in your backpack and keep everything organized with expandable packing cubes. The best ones come with a second zipper so you can pack them, and then compress them (similar to a rolling suitcase!). Packing cubes come in all shapes and sizes and can be used on everything from shoes, to electronics, to bulky sweaters and jeans.

To pack them group like items, like all the shirts, then roll them (the rolling is KEY), arrange them in the packing cube, and zip. Badabing, badaboom! It’s amazing how much space these save, plus it makes it so much easier to live out of your weekend travel backpack without having to constantly search for things!

4. Comfortable shoes ONLY

European cities are all very different from one another, but one thing they have in common is the amount of walking you’ll end up doing. Always bring at least two pairs of shoes for your study abroad weekend trips in case one gets wet or you get a blister (also always bring a couple band aids just in case). 

Boots are a great option because they have excellent support, look very stylish, and can easily fit padded insoles to keep your feet comfortable. Be sure to wear the bulkier pair on your travel days to save space in your backpack. If you are staying in a hostel, you might also consider packing a pair of flip flops for the shower.

Now is not the time to break in new shoes. Make sure you pack shoes that you’ve already established as comfortable, especially over a couple of hours and walked miles.

Your shoes packing list for weekend travel should include:

• One pair for walking during the day 
• One dress up pair for evenings out
• One pair of flip flops for hostel showers (optional)

5. Keep the toiletries simple

Really prioritize what you might need for a weekend away, and if you’re traveling with friends, divvy up different group items to save on space. Try to bring toiletries that are not only travel sized, but can serve a dual purpose (like a hair straighter and curling iron in one). Bring multiple tiny toothpastes in your study abroad toiletry bag and then use them during your weekend travels as you go.

Find a good toiletry kit that can help keep all of your items organized and won’t take up too much space. The kind that lay very flat tend to work best and are a perfect fit for the front flap of your weekend travel backpack.

Extra weekend travel toiletry tips for the ladies.

Dry shampoo is a HUGE time saver—for a weekend, you can avoid having to wash and dry your hair (but still look great for all the photos you’ll end up taking #flawless). If you’re strapped for cash you can even make your own with cornstarch and some essential oils (lavender is my favorite).  Apply this mix with a makeup brush and forget about squeezing a 3oz aerosol into your toiletries ziplock at the airport.  Also figure out a couple of hairstyles that look good on day two or three of washed hair. Twisting or braiding can work wonders, as can the messy bun and headbands are  your friend! 

Find the smallest possible container for things like face wash, moisturizer (with SPF of course), and foundation (or bb cream). Often eye cream containers or contact cases work best to give you just enough to use for the weekend. 

You might bring along your go-to makeup items instead of the whole kit and caboodle. Face powder, mascara, your eyebrow pencil, blush, eyeshadow, and lip color tend to do the trick. 

Your toiletries packing list for weekend student travel should include:

• Shampoo/Conditioner/Soap
• Toothbrush + toothpaste
• Deodorant and  body spray
• Hair care products
• Makeup (the essentials only)
• Glasses, contacts, and eye solution
• Necessary medicines
• A sick toiletry bag

6. Electronics

Of course you’ll want to bring your phone along (it’s basically your study abroad BFF, #amiright) and we highly recommend you have a European SIM card in it, too. This gives you easy access to data and navigating, and a tool to use in case of emergency. The best part? Based on current EU laws, a SIM card from another EU country must work without roaming in all other EU countries (so you won’t have to buy a new one every time you go on weekend trips in Europe for college students!). 

Be sure to pack an external charger that can handle multiple recharges in case your phone runs low on battery when you are out adventuring. They might be a bit bulkier and expensive, but it’s worth it. Pro tip: Invest in a converter that has multiple USB ports on it so you can charge everything at once while you sleep—both the charger itself AND your phone. External chargers usually take several hours to fully juice up again and being able to plug them and your phone in is key.

For some people, a camera is also necessary, but try to invest in one that has great quality without the bulk. DSLRs take gorgeous photos, but they are very heavy and cumbersome. Many mirrorless cameras are much more compact and take equally beautiful photos.

During student travel in Europe, be sure to bring the following electronics:

• Smart phone and charger
• External battery pack
• Camera (optional)
• Tablet (optional)

In summary—

Here’s everything you need:

• A ~30L backpack
• Packing cubes
• 2 pairs of bottoms 
• 1 nicer outfit for going out

Not only are they cheap,  it’s a place too meet other travellers too. However, hostels aren’t always the cheapest options, especially when they are located in expensive cities such as London and Paris. 

If that’s the case, AirBnBs are a better alternative. For those who are more adventurous, give Couchsurfing a try. Couchsurfing is a new take on a very old “broke traveller” experience – where you sleep on someone’s couch so that you have a roof over your head while travelling somewhere. 

In 2007, an app was designed where you can search the place you’re going to and find many hosts who are happy to have you come sleep on their couch, or willing to spare bed, for free.

3. Get around Europe on a budget

Many underestimate the cost of transportation as there are many you don’t think about. These costs include the bus fare from the airport, metro passes around the city or bus tickets for day trips. 

If you’re staying in a city, use the local subway or bus system to get around instead of renting a car or taking taxis. Smaller cities have the option of renting a bicycle or scooter for tourists to travel around. 

The other thing many European cities have going for them is their walkability. Although slower, it’s free and easy. Plus, in most cities you’ll likely be walking by some of the most famous sights in the world – maybe Rome’s Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or Gaudi’s famous modernist buildings in Barcelona.

4. Join the walking tours

Admission fees to museums and monuments can add up.  Luckily, many European hostels have free walking tours. These tours usually take about an hour to complete, enough time for you to get your bearings and map out places you might want to visit later. Many free walking tours include a city’s history and main attractions. 

While some free walking tours are completely free, they do require a tip. If you’re a museum fan, you can schedule your visit around a day that offers free entry. In London, the Louvre is free on the first Sunday of every month. 

5. Indulge in street food or local markets

Eating at fancy, sit-down restaurants for every meal while you are in Europe will definitely throw your budget out the window.
