Studio McGee’s New Mountain Spec House Is Basically a Pinterest Board Come to Life

“Dream Home Makeover” star Shea McGee used everything in her bag of tricks for this masterful build.

The three-bedroom house is located in Heber City, Utah, about an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City and just minutes from the slopes, an equestrian center, and downtown Park City. “I have been trying to convince Syd [her husband] for years to invest in a high-end spec home,” McGee points out in a blog post . Once the two were in agreement, the land was purchased, architect Aaron Inouye and the team at Killowen Construction were brought on to design and build the house, and, finally, McGee stepped in to bring her signature classic modern rustic touch.

“Even though it’s a mountain community, I didn’t want to lean too hard into a mountain cabin aesthetic,” McGee explains. “The interiors are cozy and traditional, with a lot of natural materials that reflect the vast amount of nature that surrounds it.”

The entrance of the 3,553-square-foot house opens to a double-height living room that stretches across regal floor-to-ceiling stone inlays. The space is a skillful curation of farmhouse patterns and classic sofas, paired with contrasting modern side tables and metallic light fixtures. The color scheme? Muted ocher, soft browns, and pale blues, pinks, and greens—all in ultrasoft fabrics that you can’t help but touch. “To me, the space should be just as pleasing to the touch as it is to the eye,” McGee adds.

Each room exudes effortless warmth and personality, from the elegantly playful nursery that is shrouded in barely-there patterned wallpaper and vintage prints to the cozy layered primary bedroom that opens to a country French bathtub moment that has us rethinking the long-adored clawfoot look. Meanwhile, a sage-green mudroom is punctuated by a neighboring office clad in cavelike rich brown paint with floor-to-ceiling built-ins that offer a welcome moody moment. “This space reads “grandpa chic,” and I love the cozy, sophisticated vibes it gives off,” McGee adds.

17 Gorgeous Studio McGee Kitchens that Prove Why Shea McGee is Queen

studio mcgee pantry tour

Studio McGee kitchens are the stuff of dreams. They’re usually the perfect mix of modern and traditional, blending materials and colors in a way that feels both classic and fresh.

It’s no wonder Shea McGee’s aesthetic landed her both a Netflix show and a Target home decor line. The girl is good.

Luckily, there is no shortage of Studio Mcgee kitchen photos and home inspiration to swoon over on the Internet. Between the firm’s Instagram and blog, there’s a Studio McGee kitchen out there for everyone.

If you’re looking for kitchen inspo , I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of Studio McGee kitchens to come up with my favorite designs. Here are seventeen (and counting!) of the loveliest I’ve found. And while you’re at it, check out my favorite Studio McGee bathrooms , too!

My favorite Studio McGee Kitchens

Shop Studio McGe kitchen favorites:

1. This modern green beauty

studio mcgee pantry tour

I have a thing for green kitchens, and if my own hadn’t been renovated only a few years before we moved into our home, I’d probably gut it and put a green kitchen in its place. I also love how the intricate light fixture contrasts the simplicity of the cabinets.

2. A white kitchen with all the details

studio mcgee pantry tour

White kitchens are timeless, but they can also be a bit boring if they don’t have some sort of unique perspective. There are a few things that make this one stand out to me: The dark wood-toned island, which adds some contrast and depth to the room, the oversized plaster range hood, which feels almost sculptural, and the taupe-and-brass lighting above the island, which ties into the brass hardware, but is just unexpected enough.

This one is actually Shea McGee’s personal kitchen.

3. This rustic Cotswalds-esque kitchen

studio mcgee pantry tour

This kitchen is a beautiful example of modern-meets-traditional design. The architecture of the room could be out of an English cottage, and the kitchen honors that, while still bringing in modern touches, like the barstools and zellige tile backplash (a big kitchen backsplash trend ), that make it feel updated and current.

Shop Studio McGee’s Target Picks

4. A slate blue gentleman’s kitchen

studio mcgee pantry tour

So I’m not totally sure if this kitchen does, indeed, belong to a gentleman, but it sure looks like it does. The combination of the slate blue with the caramel leather barstools and black pendant lights gives elegant-meets-masculine vibes that I’m here for.

5. A bright and cheerful Studio McGee kitchen

studio mcgee pantry tour

This one feels like a classic Studio McGee kitchen to me. It’s bright and clean, with a timeless design that’s packed with modern touches (the barstools, lighting, and open shelving). I also love the white zelige tile, which is one of my favorite kitchen backsplash trends of the moment.

6. A kitchen with an antique-inspired range hood

studio mcgee pantry tour

The range hood in this cozy kitchen looks like an updated version of an antique that might appear in an old French country kitchen. I love how the range hood informs design decisions throughout the rest of the space (see: the barstools ), too.

7. A coastal California kitchen

studio mcgee pantry tour

This one screams California coast. It’s sort of like the Studio McGee take on the Serena & Lily look. It’s got all of the sandy tans and airy blues and rattan elements of Serena & Lily, with the modern touches that a McGee & Co. design brings, like the more contemporary coastal barstools and clean-lined living area furniture.

8. A kitchen with a statement range

studio mcgee pantry tour

A La Cornue range is certainly an investment, but one that takes any white kitchen (actually, any kitchen, period) up a notch. (Also a statement: The stone slab backsplash . Stunning.)

9. And the most perfect pantry door

This kitchen is actually the same one as the kitchen with the La Cornue range. As much as I love the range, I might love this arched pantry door more. Also, note the storage that looks like a built-in cane dresser .

10. A clean and classic kitchen

studio mcgee pantry tour

This space is one of Studio McGee’s older designs, but it proves that simplicity = timelessness. White kitchen cabinets and countertops are a little ubiquitous, sure, but they’re also not something that’ll be out of style in a few years. The kitchen can always be freshened up a bit with a new color on the island, different cabinet hardware, and new lighting.

11. A navy stunner

studio mcgee pantry tour

This has to be one of the prettiest kitchen cabinet and countertop combos I’ve ever seen. The green undertones in the navy paint color pick up the greens in the marble perfectly. The hardware is also a beautiful choice, since I think if it were polished nickel or stainless steel the space would have felt a bit cold. This kitchen also shows off one of my favorite kitchen cabinet trends , of placing the cabinets directly atop the counters.

12. A dark green classic kitchen

studio mcgee pantry tour

The traditional-style cabinets in this kitchen go from “nice” to show-stopping thanks to that bold green paint color. That’s one of the best parts about a Studio McGee kitchen – there is always a fresh take on timeless design elements, combining kitchen trends and more classic ideas.

13. A super subtle subway tile

White kitchen with subway tile niche, black countertops and indoor greenery to soften

We have seen a lot of subway tile in recent years, but using them for a subtle kitchen niche install, à la Studio McGee, makes way for more timeless elegance. The form brings subtle texture, and the gloss adds key dimension to help this white kitchen space live out its most chic and lively existence.

14. Raw and natural materials

studio mcgee pantry tour

Contrary to last but still very iconic in its own right, I love the natural finish and craftsmanship detail in Studio McGee’s kitchen from their Water’s Edge project. Shea actually says this is her favorite room of the home, and I can totally see why. They brought a little of the outside in by using the same stone found on the exterior of the house, alongside plaster, brass, honed granite, and reclaimed timber for a cohesive finish that is unexpected, but delicious all the same.

15. Contrasting textiles? Check.

White kitchen with vintage rug and check roman shades

The Home of the Bay project, California has layers of goodness. Beyond the sleek island, range, and plank floors, I love how the vintage rug and fabric roman shades are so opposing in pattern, yet finely connected via that navy hue. The play on form sparks interest and gives the entire space a little more personality and playfulness almost.

16. Cool, creamy hues

Creamy cupboard fronts, with gold pendant lighting and leather wrap barstools

From the tan wrap leather barstools (the Greeley), to the brass kitchenware – this is one cool kitchen. The Cottonwood kitchen’s vibe is polished yet laid back, minimal but welcoming, and, helped by a blend of ivory hues and soft gray, punctuated with shinier finishes in the pendant lighting and reflective fixtures. Honestly, I could stare all day.

17. Complete with a carved out coffee nook

studio mcgee pantry tour

This beauty was posted in 2022, and alongside ‘luxury moments’ like the marble slab, steel windows, and vintage pocket pantry door Shea included in this design, I love the open shelving-cum-coffee nook carved within the cabinetry. It is super elegant, and feels like a natural extension of the island, making the space even more functional and beautiful.

How to design a kitchen like Studio McGee

If you’re taking inspiration from Studio McGee for your own kitchen remodel, there are a few things to learn from the design firm’s style.

First, blend the bold with the traditional.

Studio McGee kitchens are typically largely traditional spaces with a few unique or unexpected modern elements that elevate them. For example, choosing a classic cabinet style but choosing a trendier kitchen cabinet paint color. Or choosing classic white cabinets but adding a unique island, range, or lighting. Go for a mix of about 70% traditional and 30% unique or modern.

Keep the color palette earthy

Studio McGee almost exclusively uses neutral colors and earth tone hues. Think: Greens, blues, whites, tans/taupes, and wood tones. Most of their designs are some combination of the above.

Choose pale wood floors

Again, most Studio McGee projects feature pale oak flooring. In fact, you could even go so far as to say the firm is responsible for the pale oak flooring trend . If you want the Studio McGee kitchen look, a pale-toned wood floor is a must.

Tour the Shea McGee–Designed Home of Former MLB Catcher Jason Castro

Tour the Shea McGeeDesigned Home of Former MLB Catcher Jason Castro

Wrapping up his Major League Baseball playing career with the Astros in 2022 didn’t mean the end of All-Star catcher Jason Castro’s relationship to the city of Houston. Instead, Castro and his wife, Maris, were set on keeping the roots their family had established in Texas. The couple, who met as undergraduate athletes at Stanford, formed strong ties to the city where Castro began and concluded his 12 years in the MLB (which also included stints in Minnesota and Southern California). Once a home had been purchased, it was renovation time. But Maris recalls that Jason harbored doubts about the success of that effort. “He only agreed to the renovation plan if Studio McGee was on board,” she says. “We had been following Shea on Instagram for years…and loved everything [she] touched. We felt like we wanted to give our designer full reign on the house with little interference…. But to do so, we had to agree on a designer we both trusted—and Studio McGee was the only one!”

Once McGee signed on, her focus turned to further grounding the Castros and their three young kids in their adoptive city and navigating the couple’s contrasting tastes. “Jason loves a more modern aesthetic, and Maris prefers traditional,” the Utah-based founder of Studio McGee says. “So, that was the direction from the beginning—to blend those aesthetics together so that we could make everyone happy.” The project itself took a surprising turn early on too. What was initially planned as a remodel with the Houston-based architecture firm Reagan & André pivoted to a larger ground-up construction project. Nonetheless, the team’s early efforts informed the final outcome of the 9,000-square-foot house that faces the street with an unabashedly symmetrical stone and painted brick façade capped by a trio of gabled dormers.

“The exterior looks almost identical to what the remodel plan was originally, and we followed the same flow from room to room,” McGee notes. “One thing I love about the way this home came together is that it is not obvious if it’s a remodel or a new build because of the way it reveals itself.” Certain heirlooms that Maris wanted to incorporate into the new spaces also provided more parameters. The chess table that stands in the formal living room and a tea set proudly mounted on the dining room wall that belonged to her grandmother informed a creative foundation without constraining Studio McGee’s imagination and resourcefulness.

McGee, who launched her design practice with her husband, Syd, in 2014, is open to these types of requests, as someone eager to bring an old-soul spirit to new residences. Given the clients’ location, a dedicated sourcing trip to Round Top —where they picked up rugs, a mid-century bar cart that gives the dining room more swagger, armchairs in the primary bedroom, and various accessories—helped too. “I think that soul comes through warmth, and warmth for me comes through texture,” the Netflix Dream Home Makeover star and MasterClass instructor adds.

To mitigate the grand size and scale of the rooms, McGee selected inviting plaster surfaces, deep wood stains for the kitchen cabinetry, as well as ceiling treatments in the primary bedroom and family room. She accentuated curves in the furniture and interior elements with old-world-feeling moments, starting in the entrance hall, where McGee & Co.’s Prudence sofa upholstered in Rose Tarlow’s Pamina Maldives fabric stands on reclaimed cement tile flooring from Chateau Domingue , and Scoop sconces from the Urban Electric Co. illuminate the stairwell.

“I wanted weight on either side of that entryway,” McGee says, so the formal living room and dining room that flank the space are swathed in deep olive-toned green shades from Segreto Finishes , a favorite local paint and custom plaster source. The splashy yet restrained unlacquered brass chandelier is another nod to Jason Castro’s modern preferences. From the room, one can also catch a glimpse into the pantry, which McGee practically views as “more of a second kitchen,” where the inky black cabinetry color is informed by the dining room painting the Castros commissioned from artist Holly Addi that hangs above a sinuous Emmanuelle Simon console. “They were open to surprises, and having these pockets of dark rooms throughout the home” defined the approach to color, McGee adds.

The Castros were also amenable to McGee’s other insights related to her intersecting expertises as a designer and as a parent. In the generously sized hallways and potentially underutilized pockets, “we needed to decide how we are going to activate these areas,” she notes. The dedicated homework nook was one such solution, for instance. Conversely, McGee honored the clients’ specific request to include a fire pole in the playroom, which gets intensive usage during punishingly hot Texas summers. These ideas all seamlessly merged thanks to the strong spirit of trust that began from the start of the project to when the Castros finally stepped into their completed retreat.

“I love it when I see clients immediately walk in and sit down on a couch and relax,” McGee says. “That tells me that they feel at home.” Indeed, they certainly do. As Maris puts it: “From the moment you enter, the house feels warm and welcoming. We are a young family—our kids ride toys through the great room [and] play laser tag through the halls…the house doesn’t feel too imposing for that.”

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
